This story was originally published on Car Rave.Damn. This is a real tasty piece we have featured today on Car Rave. A stunning 1986 Toyota FJ62 LandCruiser for you to ogle at. I think I am in love.I have been pining after a Cruiser for a while now. But I need to move quickly though because prices are just getting insane. How insane? I’m talking approaching six-figure insanity. I’m not joking. For an old LandCruiser. What? Many people remember these cars as humble mum-buses (or Dad’s) that could be found putting around the suburbs throughout the 80’s. In recent years, however, they have become a cult classic. Well, they were a cult classic. Now prices and popularity are more relative to that of a bonafide collectors car. The train has well and truly left the station. And I am 100% aboard.I think their appeal and popularity arose from the fact that it’s a cool old classic 4×4 that you can actually use. They’re hugely capable off-road, big inside, look handsome, have great parts support, can easily be rebuilt and are relatively easy to work on. Just throw the family in, and drive anywhere – no need to be precious.

Just waiting for a road trip…
For me, I was drawn in after spotting an example not unlike this one scooting through Tokyo about 5 years ago – in stark contrast to its environment. At that time, the 60-series LandCruiser scene back home was still very much all about huge muddies, big flares and snorkels. To see a stripped back LandCruiser with no 4×4 accessories and in mint condition was quite obscure to my bogan eyes.Australia’s 60-series scene is very much changing (some would say gentrified), and this example is very much channelling the Japanese style (popularised by companies such as Flex Dream). It’s a recipe of dog dish capped steelies wrapped in BFGoodrich All-Terrains, stock chrome bumpers, standard paint and no accessories. Sure, that doesn’t sound too practical if you genuinely want to go off-road. But, it makes for a perfect classic daily 4×4 that you can use as a roadtrip steed when needed, and if push comes to shove, it will still demolish some pretty decent tracks.
Old wheels, who dis?
If you want it, move quick. An example like this won’t hang around too long. And it’s priced pretty well considering the current popularity of these old rigs.Do it before I find myself calling the bank manager. Find it on Gumtree here for $21.9k.Car Rave covers the coolest and most unique cars on sale in Australia. Check out more awesome second-hand car drops over on Car Rave.

Camogli Is The Hidden Gem Italians Don’t Want You To Visit
Camogli Is The Hidden Gem Italians Don’t Want You To Visit

Tanned young people. Vespas. Cliques of old women. Tobacco shops. Old men playing cards. Stepping into Camogli is less like going back in time, and more like tasting the future of travel: living like a local.

But before you fall in love with the Italian Riviera’s neglected middle-child (Camogli has approximately 260,000 Instagram hashtags to its name, while its cousin Portofino has over 853,000); allow us to provide a little context.

While everyone knows about Portofino and Cinque Terre (to the point where travellers are now learning local slang with the specific intention of scoring a date), and even as tourists plunder beyond Rome and Venice seeking out hotspots like Polignano a Mare there are still a few covetous coves where you can say ciao to the crowds.

Enter: Camogli: a classy Mediterranean locale, which – apart from one recent incident where a pair of French guests attempted to blackmail a luxury hotel – has remained a sanctuary along the Italian Riviera, all the way up and through Facebook, Pinterest and Tumblr’s heydays.

As The New York Times’ Sebastian Modak recounts hearing in Camogli, “Portofino is for the Americans. Camogli is for us Italians.”

While Instagram (which is currently, if Bloomberg figures are correct, blowing up harder than 79A.D. Vesuvius) is making a habit of drawing backpackers further and further afield and even as Camogli is featured in The New York Times’ 52 Places to go in 2019 list, it somehow remains a locals-only gem.

Why? Camogli, which sits aboard the Golfo Paradiso, is not as iconic, which means it is, “Often overshadowed by its hugely popular neighbours [Portofino and the cruise ports of the Cinque Terre],” (The New York Times).

RELATED: Why Italians Will Never Understand Australia’s Low Carb Obsession

The New York Times also posits that Golfo Paradiso is a “try-hard moniker that [makes this stretch of coast sound] like an all-inclusive resort rather than a string of centuries-old fishing towns” which deters Instagram culture posers from visiting.

“Over six days hopping between its five towns, I only heard one American accent. The tourists I did encounter were largely Italian families from Genoa and Milan, hitting the rocky beaches for some summer sun.”

But much like the $24 pizza and red wine down your local Italian joint, we reckon sometimes simple is better (who want croutons, anyway.) Capische? It might be time to start practising your Italiano. Anyway, if that sounds like you, here’s the D’Marge guide to Camogli.

  • Villa Porticciolo: if you like classy vibes, seafood and views that will unrig your jaw.
  • Gli Angeli: much like Villa Porticciolo, but slightly cheaper.

Stay

  • Belmond Hotel Splendido: for high rollers willing to spend a grand a night.
  • Excelsior Palace Hotel: for the family looking for an above-average hotel.

Aaron Paul’s Rolex Flex Is Almost As Good As His Chelsea Boot Game
Aaron Paul’s Rolex Flex Is Almost As Good As His Chelsea Boot Game

It’s often the little things that make an outfit really stand out. Everyone has a black suit but the ones we talk about have a little extra flair to them. Everyone likewise has shirts and ties but the ones that you notice have a little extra something. It was the extra somethings that Aaron Paul was bringing to the red carpet in Spain over the weekend.Aaron Paul appeared at the Sitges Film Festival for the red carpet of his new film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie where he returns to his role as Jesse Pinkman. The movie is a follow on from the events of the season finale of Breaking Bad and follows Aaron’s character as he comes to terms with his past. Produced by Netflix the film is directed by Vince Gilligan who was the creator of the original series. For the event, Aaron wore a blue suit with a surprising canary yellow t-shirt underneath.  It’s a great suit choice and it’s one that we have often promoted due to how flexible it is. The two colours chosen by Aaron are on the opposite ends of the colour spectrum which is what can make them work so well together. The blue in this instance subdues the yellow shirt making the combination stand out. Even more so when he is next to the black and orange car at the front of the premiere. The yellow may be eye-grabbing but where you should really be looking is Aaron’s extremities. Starting at the bottom Aaron is rocking a pair of blue suede Chelsea boots. Suede tends to give off a more casual vibe and certainly, when paired with the t-shirt it makes this look a smart-casual classic. Suede can be a risky choice given how damaging rain can be to the material, but if you can’t wear them in sunny Spain then when can you. Then we move up to his wrist where the actor is showing off a silver Rolex. Aaron’s Datejust 41 Rolex features an oyster bracelet and is available for AUD$12,400. The blue dial 41mm is characterised by hour markers fashioned from 18ct gold with the date displayed in a window at the 3 o’clock mark. The actor has become known for his watches with even a whole Reddit thread being dedicated to discovering what he is wearing.Aaron has been keeping low lately and even kept the filming of El Camino under wraps until recently. The entire production was done covertly, with unmarked cars and even private planes to fly the actors to the locations. It’s just a film guys, this isn’t Area 51, you don’t need to be so covert. The actor has become better known recently for his voice work on Netflix’s BoJack Horseman where he plays an a-sexual, one of the first portrayals of the sexuality on screen. However, he is getting back in front of the camera next year with roles in Westworld and Truth Be Told that will come out next year.

Tiny Workout Changes That Can Give You Huge Results
Tiny Workout Changes That Can Give You Huge Results

Everyone at the gym is looking to maximise their results, whether it is through new proteins, a new PT or even a new workout. But sometimes its the little things like how to lift that can make a difference and the best part is that it doesn’t even require a change of workout.

Fitness trainer and founder of The Training Manual Peter O’Reilly regularly posts on his instagram ways that lifters can make minor changes to their workouts in order to maximise results. These tips involve things like, switching the type of barbell, changing up grip and even changing your stance. They are tiny changes but can go a long way particularly if you’re trying to get ready for the upcoming Silly Season.

His latest advice was for people looking to build their biceps, a favourite amongst males because curls get the girls. There is often debate over whether to use a barbell to curl or an EZ bar with different trainers giving out different advice. Some advocate for the straight bar as it maximises engagement through the entire range of motion. Others, like Peter argue for the EZ bar given it reduces the risk of common injuries that people develop over time using a straight bar. What good is a slightly bigger bicep if you’ve injured yourself? Peter also argues that its the greatest overall muscle activity, even over a dumbbell curl.

One of Peter’s biggest warnings is to lifters that do behind the neck exercises, so think Lat Pull Downs and Shoulder Press. Peter is firmly of the belief that lifters should stop doing exercises that put stress on that area of the neck and puts the body in a high five position. The behind the neck shoulder press in particular causes stress to the neck and has potential to strain ligaments. Lifters instead should press the bar to the front which is safer due to the bar being positioned at the center of gravity and has more sport-specific applications. The Lat Pull Down Peter suggests lifters stop doing entirely due to the risk and stress it can cause to the body.

The grip is the other thing that Peter discusses on his Instagram but of course, it is not one with a simple solution. Various exercises have different advice. For instance, an overhand grip on a tricep pushdown will let lifters put on more weight whilst an underhand grip will activate the muscles more but will limit the lift. Meanwhile, an overhand grip on a deadlift will limit the weight that’s able to be lifted and a mixed grip will allow more weight to be added but could result in a bicep tear.

It may seem like small stuff but if it helps take our biceps and muscles from zero to hero then sign us up.

Chris Hemsworth & Elsa Pataky Reveal The Perils Of Australian Domestic Air Travel
Chris Hemsworth & Elsa Pataky Reveal The Perils Of Australian Domestic Air Travel

When Jetstar cancels your flight for the umpteenth time or Tigerair immediately dispatches your luggage to the wrong side of the country, Australian domestic air travel is what you might call a necessary evil. From the security guards entertaining themselves with your taste in underwear to the never-ending queues and the inevitable ~cougher~ there is a lot to put up with. And – to be fair – most of us, if we had the money, would opt for a private jet too, as Chris Hemsworth and Elsa Pataky normally do.Last Monday, however, as The Daily Mail reported, “Chris Hemsworth, 36, and his wife Elsa Pataky, 43, decided to ditch their VIP aircraft for a public aircraft… as they travelled back home to Byron Bay after spending the weekend in Melbourne.”

Not happy.
Unfortunately for the A-list duo’s privacy, the pair were photographed by MediaMode.com (whose pictures were then used by The Daily Mail) dragging their luggage through Melbourne Airport’s bustling terminal. Fortunately for the rest of Australia, it goes to show that no matter how sturdy your abs (or how heavy your wallet) there are some things in life that are a Thor-n in your side, no matter what (with travelling domestically being one of them). In other words: don’t bother trying to look glamourous in an airport, but instead settle for what we’re calling ‘dishevelled chic.’That’s not to say you should roll up in a Bintang singlet (you want to be eligible for an upgrade, after all) but that anyone who goes to too much effort to fly from Sydney to Melbourne had probably better take a better look at their priorities (there’s nothing more painful in life than a wasted outfit).
Not happier.
Chris also gave us a masterclass in airport style, proving that all you need to pull off ‘dishevelled chic’ is a reasonably tight fitting crew neck, killer jeans and a grimace befitting your environs (to be fair we’d be pissed too if we knew we were being spied on by the paparazzi). This forms part of a broader trend of celebs dressing ever more casually when hitting the (other) runway, with David Beckham rocking his own version of the ubiquitous stained hoodie and sweatpants at London’s St Pancras International earlier this year.Although the public tends to be cruel when they see a celebrity face a situation they deal with far more regularly, in this case – Chris and Elsa being a couple of low-key legends (especially when compared to some of the more self-absorbed A-listers out there) – the comments on The Daily Mail article (and photos) are actually quite complimentary.“This couple is down to earth,” wrote Roxy Jacencock from Sydney. “Unlike Nic and Keith. Have you seen Nic and Keith standing behind the queue? Never. They will have to clear the airport for them bahahahahahah.”Cameron 1981 from the UK was more direct in his observations: “He’s hot.”And Minutemade, betraying his or her UK background (and lack of Aussie appreciation for how annoying it is to be papped) said, “Does he have to glower at the camera? Ignoring it would lead to less frown lines?”In any case: you now have another excuse to be a little more chill about your next domestic flight.

The Cold Hard Truth About Ditching The Apple Watch For A Fitbit
The Cold Hard Truth About Ditching The Apple Watch For A Fitbit

I’ve long been a lover and hater of the Apple Watch. I love its design and functionality and just how much it packs into the smartwatch. On the flip side, I hate charging it every night which I almost always forget to do. It’s also not exactly the coolest device a man can wear. I’ve even heard the Apple Watch referred to as ‘a contraceptive for men’. A bit harsh, as it’s a beautifully designed device, but let’s face it, it doesn’t have the same joie de vivre that say a Rolex or IWC watch would have.

Then we have the Fitbit. A device which I always believed was just for kids and mums who like to count steps. I swore at no point was I ever going to wear one. I’m man enough to admit I was wrong.

I recently decided to give up on the Apple Watch and make the switch to Fitbit. Why? I wanted to track my activity 24/7 without having to wear two watches (that and charging every night just got boring).

Are Fitbits a rival to the Apple Watch? Are they even in the same league? Maybe kissing cousins? Yes and no. Let’s investigate.

Wearing two watches, no matter how cool you think you are, will always look whack.

When I first contacted Fitbit, this was the main reason for wanting to try the device. I wanted a fitness tracker that did nothing more than track my heart rate. Small and unassuming, something that I could wear all day on one wrist whilst wearing my mechanical watch on the other. Fitbit did offer their latest Versa 2, but it looks like an Apple Watch, so no dice.

The Fitbit Charge 3 is definitely not a watch.

Thankfully the Charge 3 doesn’t look like a watch. Which is why we chose it. The long rectangular design means it’s quite clearly a fitness tracker. It means I can wear both a watch and the tracker without looking like an idiot.

Charging the device once a week is preferable.

Apple clearly says the watch is not meant to be worn at night. But still: it would be nice to not have to charge it every day. The Apple Watch 5 may give you 18 hours screen time but it still means you have to find some awkward time to charge it. No doubt you’ll forget as well and it will run out in the middle of a workout.

Getting an email reminder to charge the device is even better.

Not only does Fitbit send a reminder email; the charge is quick too. We recommend putting it on the charge whilst cooking dinner or watching TV. Last thing you want to do is miss your steps or workout.

I spend more time checking the clock on the Fitbit Charge 3 than my mechanical watch.

Dumb, but maybe we’re just inherently lazy and reading a digital clock is easier.

Turning off all notifications means there are fewer distractions.

Within the Fitbit app you can turn on message notifications. Nice in theory, but it soon gets annoying. If you want the device to be seen and not heard, we would recommend turning them off.

Counting steps is actually more effective for losing weight.

Don’t believe us? Well in a recent feature we look at a comparison between tracking calories vs. steps. Steps will keep you more honest as they are unforgiving – but we all make excuses for calories. Just think about why you don’t track your desk snacks.

Tracking exercise is a bit of a pain in the ass on the Fitbit.

Apple’s very basic but very useful exercise tracker is our preferred application. The Fitbit exercise selection is limited and a little frustrating to access quickly.

Sleep tracking is my latest addiction. But it has not yet helped me improve my sleep. In fact, it sometimes means I’m more aware of a bad night’s sleep.

This has been a big focus for us, and has become a daily ritual of checking sleep each morning. Which is theoretically great, but can also make you a little crazy (you can feel fine, but the Fitbit says you slept like sh*t).

Sleep Score is genius but I feel it’s still early days in its development.

SleepScore is a great way of tracking sleep in a nice little number. Try as we might, we’ve not seen a score over 80. Even with a cheeky sleeping tablet. Our editorial team will be chatting with the Fitbit sleep team soon so watch this space.

The Fitbit screen light turning on in the middle of the night.

An annoying feature (but one which can easily be turned on and off).

Heart rate tracking whilst exercising never seems to match that of the Apple Watch.

One thing we did notice was a slight variance in heart rate between the two devices. The Fitbit does seem a touch more modest when calculating heart rate during high-intensity exercise. This may be all in our head (but it was noted).

Fitbit doesn’t do much in comparison to the Apple Watch. Apple really has packed so much into their watch.

As mentioned earlier, if you want a smartwatch then the Fitbit will never be for you. The sheer number of features packed into an Apple Watch pales in comparison to the Fitbit. The Fitbit is just for dudes who want – or dream – about one-day having abs.

If you’re a non-iPhone user, the Apple Watch can be a bit pointless.

After switching from iPhone to Pixel I found the Apple Watch to be a bit difficult to keep updated. The device was always looking for the mothership, which is just painful. That said, I went back to the Apple Watch for the City2Surf race because it had all my music on the device.

Payments are a little pointless.

If you’re like me and want the bare minimum with your fitness tracker; skip the Charge and get the Inspire. It’s even smaller on the wrist, has all the features but no contactless payments. No biggie. Why? Because you will have your phone on you most of the time.

At the end of the day it comes down to what you want from a device. If you want your phone on a wrist then stick with the Apple Watch 5. If you just want an out of the way tracker then Fitbit is the way to go. For me, I like my mechanical watches so a Fitbit just makes the most sense.
