Take Camping To The Next Level In The Armadillo Tea Canopy
Take Camping To The Next Level In The Armadillo Tea Canopy

Think conventional tents are for amateurs only? Then the Armadillo Tea Canopy is your ultimate Bear Grylls hideaway in the wild.

Designed by Ron Arad, the Tea Canopy which fittingly resembles an Armadillo, was designed as an independent shell structure for use indoors and outdoors to provide “an intimate enclosure, shelter or place of reflection within a garden, landscape, or large internal space.” It also just looks pretty damn cool.

The canopy is made up of 5 moulded shells, each made of repeatable, modular components which are mechanically-fixed together with exposed fixings and stiffening brackets.

You probably wouldn’t do so well trying to stay out of the rain under one of these bad boys but with a different choice of finishes depending on the purpose (from oiled plywood to durable timber) don’t be surprised if you’re waiting for a bus under one these in the future.

21 Essentials Every Adult Man Needs In His Kitchen

Congratulations: you have survived to adulthood despite your best youthful efforts not to. Now that you’re a grown man, there are certain standards you must live by lest you be mistaken for a Seth Rogan character.

It’s not that substituting a wine bottle for a rolling pin or using a shot glass to measure tablespoons doesn’t work, it’s just that it looks a hell of a lot less suave when your girlfriend comes over. And if you’re going to the trouble of cooking for her, you damn well want her to be impressed.

The Mental Trick Happy Couples Unconsciously Use To Avoid Cheating
The Mental Trick Happy Couples Unconsciously Use To Avoid Cheating

cheating trickPoliticians do it. Athletes do it. Entertainers do it. Last year’s headline-making Ashley Madison hack revealed that millions of average people (are at least trying to) do it. Cheating is so common that it almost seems inevitable, like a new Real Housewives franchise or a child star with a drug problem.

But, according to a study recently published in the journal Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, our brains employ an unconscious mental trick to help happy couples stay faithful.

People in relationships automatically perceive attractive individuals who are not their partner as less attractive. The study’s authors call it “a perceptual downgrading effect.” Over two experiments, they observed the effect and found that it was exacerbated among participants who were highly satisfied with their relationships.

Dr Shana Cole, the study’s first author, said: “Misperceiving attractive people who represent threats to the relationship as less attractive may help people resist the inclination to pursue them. This is especially important since finding someone physically attractive is a primary reason why people choose to date or romantically pursue someone.”

You don’t need science to tell you that staying in a long-term, monogamous relationship is hard – especially when online dating means an abundance of other options is only a swipe away. To combat natural temptation, the brain has developed a defence mechanism that works outside of conscious awareness and makes it easier to stay committed to your partner.

Next time your girlfriend asks if you think someone is hotter than her, you can say “no” with confidence that your brain really believes it.

6 New iPhone Hacks You Need To Know About
6 New iPhone Hacks You Need To Know About

These days there’s not much your iPhone can’t do for you. The digital age we live in means we can organise multiple work meetings and social events, sort out a first date, order food and even have our messages read out to us, all without leaving the comfort of our homes (or beds, if you’re truly lazy).

If you’re still stuck on the mystery of Siri then update your software to iOS 9 and buckle yourself in for another wild tech ride because here are 6 new iPhone hacks that you need to know about. Seriously, these ones could change your life.

#1 Make Working Out A Tip Easy

iphone-tip

If tipping isn’t your strongest suit, or you’re an ignorant Aussie backpacker in the U.S. then instead of downloading a shoddy tipping app, let your iPhone do the hard work for you.

Just press down your home button to activate Siri, ask her for the tip on however much your bill has come to and she’ll give you options for 15%, 18%, and 20% tips, depending on how steep the restaurant is or how generous you’re feeling.

#2 Make A Medical ID

medical-id

As your mum said “better safe than sorry”. Apple is of the same mindset and has made it easy to access your medical history at the doctor’s office or in case of an emergency.

If you open the Health app on your phone, you can tap the ‘Medical ID’ tab and create one, filling in fields like ‘allergies and reactions’, ‘blood type’ and ‘medications’. You can even enter trusted contacts so if there is ever an emergency, doctors can contact your loved ones without unlocking your phone.

#3 Make Siri Set You A Reminder

Reminder

Forgot to call your mum back? No sweat. Make Siri set you a reminder next time.

After missing your mum’s 10th call, open Siri and ask her to remind you to call back later. She’ll add it to your Reminders app so you know to respond at a later time.

#4 Make A Call Without Reception

wificallingactive

You’re stranded in suburb you don’t recognise after the bender of a lifetime with little battery and even worse cell reception.

As long as you’re near a McDonald’s or other public establishment where you can mooch of their free Wi-Fi, you can enable Wi-Fi Calling via the Phone tab in Settings and buzz your Uber driver no matter how poor your connection is.

#5 Make Your iPhone Read Messages To You

speak

For the ultimate lazy bastards of the world, Apple has developed a setting where you can literally have your messages read out to you.

Yes, that’s right. If you struggle with multi-tasking at the best of times, go to Settings on your iPhone, then General, then Accessibility. Here you will find the Speech tab where you can switch on all the settings and either have selected text, perhaps from an email, read out to you or you can swipe two fingers down from the top of your screen and have the entire contents of your screen read. out. loud. Like magic.

#6 Make Notes With Photos & Drawings

drawing

Your drunk mate is lost on his way to your place. Instead of confusing him with equally as inebriated written directions, use your iPhone’s Notes app to draw messages and insert photos to create a map that even a monkey would understand.

When you open the Notes app, you can either use an existing Note or create a new one and by tapping on the small plus sign above your keyboard access the nifty drawing toolbar and sketch to your heart’s delight, insert photos or even create a checklist.

Flexiroam X Is The New Device Saving Travellers From Expensive Data
Flexiroam X Is The New Device Saving Travellers From Expensive Data

The following article has been sponsored by Flexiroam X

Picture this: you’ve finally arrived in a country you’ve been longing to cross off your bucket list. The sights, sounds, and smells are unfamiliar and exhilarating. You settle into the nearest internet-equipped cafe to get your bearings and upload your first travel pic to Instagram.

There’s something romantic about being a stranger in a foreign land, ensconced in a series of quaint cafes to get your Wi-Fi fix. But the romance ends when you realise the cappuccinos are devouring half your travel budget and the connection is so slow it might as well be 1996 dial-up.

A revolutionary roaming solution is set to redefine the way travellers stay connected while abroad, making a caffeine hit the only reason you’ll need a coffee shop.

Meet Flexiroam X

Nomads, meet your new best friend. Flexiroam X is the game-changing travel hack that will redefine data consumption for jetsetters of all kinds.

The secret to its power is a proprietary microchip-embedded film that’s thinner than a sheet of A4 paper. Apply it once to your existing SIM card, start earning free data, and soon you’ll have a low-cost alternative to the exorbitant roaming fees charged by telecommunications providers back home.

Users can earn up to 100GB of free data by interacting with the app, referring friends, or participating in data giveaways and events. It’s a seamless and affordable way to stay connected in over 100 countries across the globe – and could one day be as essential to your packing list as deodorant.

How It Works

To try it for yourself, download the Flexiroam X app for iOS or Android and register for a free account. You’ll unlock 100MB of data just for signing up. To earn even more, start exploring the app. You can collect more free data – up to 100GB – by completing tasks like watching quick videos, inputting special codes, or sharing the app on your social accounts. The more you use it, the more you earn.

When you’ve built up your bank and are ready to take it abroad, order the X Starter Pack to get your X Microchip. The pack is free and will be delivered to your doorstep in 3-5 working days for $5 USD. Follow the enclosed directions to attach the ultra-slim X Microchip to your existing SIM. Apply it once and it’s good any time you travel.

The final piece of the puzzle is your yearly membership. You can currently subscribe to X Membership for $9.99 USD to use your free data for up to 12 months. The data you accumulate remains valid for as long as you have an active membership.

With the X Microchip in place and your subscription in effect, you can switch smoothly between Flexiroam’s network and your existing network. Use the Flexiroam X network for connection when you’re away and swap to your existing network when you’re at home for calls and SMS. You can expect up to 4G data speed for as long as you have the same SIM card. Watch the video below for a proper walk through.

Why It’s Worth A Shot

Flexiroam X has just launched in Australia! Why give it a try? Here are four reasons for starters.

#1 It Keeps You Connected

In our increasingly connected age, travellers are more data-hungry than ever. Your epic holiday won’t give your friends FOMO if you can’t regularly update your Facebook status, and a business trip is drastically simplified if you don’t have to stress about missing important emails. Flexiroam X helps you share your adventures, work without worry, and keep up with everything happening back home.

#2 It Won’t Break The Bank

Flexiroam X charges are few and far between. A yearly membership and a one-time shipping fee are all you need to roam free, as the first time membership subscription comes with a free starter pack. Should you find yourself in a pinch and require immediate access to the Flexiroam X network, you can purchase the 1GB Xtra Data Pack for $30 USD. All users have the ability to earn up to 100GB of data in a few ways. For example, referring a friend to Flexiroam X will earn you 100MB.

#3 It’s Flexible And Fast

When you’re on the road, flexibility is key. You never know what life might throw your way or when an unexpected dose of wanderlust could inspire spontaneity. Flexiroam X lets you decide how much data you need and how much time you want to devote to earning it.

#4 It’s Easy

You have plenty to think about while travelling already, so why add another worry? Flexiroam X streamlines an important part of the process – more data, for fewer dollars, and you only need to apply the X Microchip once. After that you can pack up and go whenever inspiration strikes, and your upgraded mobile will keep you connected in over 100 countries worldwide.

Follow Flexiroam X on Instagram for incredible travel inspiration, and check them out on Facebook to stay updated with what’s happening.

The Village Idiot's Guide To Superannuation – Cash Money Lessons Issue 04
The Village Idiot's Guide To Superannuation – Cash Money Lessons Issue 04

Superannuation

I’m sure when you make a list of ‘things I want to do this weekend’, thinking about your superannuation doesn’t spring to mind. It’s probably not on the ‘things I want to do next weekend’ list either.

The nature of super is that it’s a really long-term investment and how you manage it in the early years, good or bad, will compound over the next 40+ years. Whether you aspire to survive in retirement on a strict diet of Viagra and poolside martini’s or are a little more traditional in your approach (mortgage free with a few extra dollars for a holiday), the time to start working towards that goal is right now.

Know The Basics

A super account is basically just an investment account that the government forces you to put money into and won’t let you access until a certain age. Your employer pays the mandatory contribution from your salary, currently 9.5% but increasing to 12% by 2025. All fund providers charge you fees for the privilege, but these will vary from fund to fund.  Sometimes you might also have insurance with your super fund which means you’re paying premiums as well.

“The nature of super is that it’s a really long-term investment and how you manage it in the early years, good or bad, will compound over the next 40+ years.”

Keep Track Of Your Quatloos

A lot of people will have multiple super accounts from different jobs. Prioritise rolling them into one and stop paying multiple sets of fees. Create a myGov account and link up with the ATO and you’ll be able see all your super accounts, including ones you may have lost track of. They can also help you with the consolidation process.

Be Proactive

Despite the recent proposed changes to super, it can still be a pretty tax effective way to save for your future. Speak with your accountant or financial adviser about putting extra money into super before June 30, which might help reduce your tax bill this year. They’ll also be able to advise on super strategies such as salary sacrificing and self-managed super funds for those with significant savings and an active interest in running their own investments.

Luke Laretive is a Senior Private Wealth Adviser @ Shaw and Partners. This is general advice and you should consider it in light of your personal circumstances.

The Fashion District of Los Angeles is renowned for some of the trendiest people on the West Coast scene as well as their accompanying abodes.

This particular industrial loft whose occupants consist of a young couple, their dog and a fish is the perfect example of this. The 140 square-metre space is a creative’s dream home which effortlessly combines an open office space with vintage-inspired living quarters.

Think a Chesterfield lounge, raw hardwood finishings and quirky art decor pieces strewn throughout. To add an even further lineage to Los Angeles, the owners say that all of the furniture was picked up from the local flea markets.

A 1940s cinema light acts as the home’s centre piece which adds a depth of character to the light filled lounge which is also home to a vintage Rhodes Piano, a 1920s converted bar and World War II which double as side tables.

To bring the space in line with modern times, a projector has been added to project movies across an entire wall face, making Netflix nights an experience to cherish on the queen-sized daybed.

Whether it’s work, play or eat, this is the perfect industrial loft to get it done. Even the dog and fish will approve.

Samsung's Foldable Phone Will Arrive Sooner Than You Think
Samsung's Foldable Phone Will Arrive Sooner Than You Think

The future is now. Samsung‘s fancy foldable phones that we were teased with last year are said to be arriving in our hot little hands as early as the beginning of 2017.

Sources said that Samsung is working to release two new phones and one of them will have a 5-inch handset that can turn into an 8-inch tablet. A recent patent shows a smartphone that folds directly in half, bit of a ‘kill two bird with one stone’ approach.

The concept of foldable phones isn’t new to Samsung, however. Companies like Sony and Sharp have been playing around with similar technologies and even tri-fold smartphones for the origami enthusiasts of the world.

Check out the video for Samsung’s foldable phone project that was released a few years ago and decide for yourself if you’d be an early adopter of the bendy phone trend.

World's First Passenger Drone Receives U.S Flight Test Approval
World's First Passenger Drone Receives U.S Flight Test Approval

Signs of the future could be on its way with Chinese UAV company EHang receiving permission to test fly its innovative passenger drone in Nevada this year.

The EHang 184 is an autonomously controlled drone much like the radio controlled units available on the market today with the slight difference being that it can carry one human-sized passenger. The Institute for Autonomous Systems granted EHang the green light to test the drone’s basic flight capabilities whilst also throwing its support behind the program to reinforce the airworthiness of autonomous single-seaters to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Of course we’ll still be a long way off from seeing passengers in drones since air space is restricted in most parts of the world today. For now Nevada may well be the perfect testing bed thus far for the UAV drone as it consists of an expansive desert area as well as a robust tourism industry that could help leverage the project in the long run.

Mark Barker of The Institute told the Las Vegas Review Journal that he’s keen to see the day when “drone taxis” become a part of everyday transport. Think a future where a robotic drone picks you up from an airport and whisks you away to your favourite casino without having to battle ground traffic.

If there’s any place to get such an audacious project off the ground, it’s the U.S. And if it’s money the project requires, Las Vegas is the right place to set up shop.
