So let’s get one thing clear first – carbs don’t make you fat. The science behind dieting is that any food can cause you to gain weight if you simply overeat – it just so happens that carbs are the easiest foods for us to indulge in (hello, french fries).

As strength conditioning coach Nils Hestermann told us recently, “even if you have healthy eating habits but you eat too much, it won’t have a beneficial effect in terms of body composition.”

This is because you’re consuming more energy than your body uses and this is what results in weight gain. Now with this little lesson out of the way, we’re going to tell you what high carb foods are healthy for you, with the help of NYT-awarded health and science journalist Max Lugavere.

Lugavere starts by saying that carbs tend to get a bad wrap these days but they’re not all byproducts of Satan’s kitchen (a.k.a. Hell’s Kitchen).

“Some foods that are higher in carbs are quite healthy,” explains Lugavere in one of his latest Instagram post.

So what’s so special about these high carb foods he’s listed? Well they’re not actually carbs to begin with.

“They’re foods. The foods contain carbs, along with a plethora of health boosting compounds. They also interact with our gut bacteria to provide indirect health benefits.”

Lugavere goes on to explain that some of the world’s healthiest foods contain a nice mix of digestible carbs and digestion-resistant carbs known as fibre. Fibre, if you didn’t know, is an essential part of our diet as it supports positive gut health by keeping our bowel movements regular.

So let’s go through each of the six foods that Lugavere has listed.

1. Blueberries: These little balls of fruity wonder can improve your brain cognition and promotes longevity
2. Beetroots: Beets contain a high level of nitrate and are believed to be great for your brain’s blood vessels and sex organs
3. Orange Sweet Potatoes: Beta Carotene found in these high carb foods are good for your brain and eyes
4. Pomegranate: No, it’s not a kitchen bench top finishing. Pomegranate is believed to boost muscle function, endurance and brain activity
5. Dark Chocolate: Now we’re talking. Dark chocolate is known to improve heart health via flavanols which can enhance cognitive and athletic performance
6.  Purple Sweet Potatoes: No one loves cancer. Purple sweet potatoes are rich in anthocyanins which can help prevent colon cancer

And there you have it, a quick and simple guide to high carb foods that not only taste good but can also supplement your daily snack cravings whilst improving your overall health.

Straight men have pondered the answer to this not-so-simple question since the beginning of time: what do women want? The answer will not be found in a Mel Gibson rom-com, but it might be lurking in a research paper.

Science is doing its best to solve the age-old puzzle of the female brain. Scores of experiments have attempted to name things women find attractive in men, with varying degrees of success. The studies are often small, and rely on iffy self-reported feelings for results, but at worst they provide food for thought, and at best they offer real insight that could take you from dud to Don Juan.

Good Looks, But Only Sometimes

Take the abs of Matthew McConaughey, the biceps of Chris Hemsworth, and the flowing locks of young Brad Pitt, and you have the perfect man – right? Physical attractiveness can be a factor, but it’s not as important as you might think. Study after study after study has confirmed that while women choose better-looking guys for flings, they fall for other qualities for long-term relationships.

A Sense Of Humour

Ask a woman what she likes in her partner and she’ll almost always say “he makes me laugh.” It’s not news that ladies love a man who can tickle their funny bone, but science helps explain why. One study found that a good sense of humour is sexually attractive because it reveals intelligence, creativity, and other ‘good genes’ or ‘good parent’ traits.

A Furry Friend

No, it’s not just a stereotype – women really do love men with dogs. Studies suggest that dogs facilitate social interaction between humans. Another experiment found that dog ownership can increase the long-term attractiveness of men, as it indicates the ability to nurture and suggests tendencies for relationship commitment.

Risk-Taking

Time to brush up on your CPR and sky-diving skills. A study confirmed the prediction that women would prefer physical risk-takers (brave, athletic, fit) over risk-avoiders as long-term mates, but only if the risk was taken during an altruistic act. Another experiment discovered that modern risks are considered unattractive for either sex, while risks that harken back to our hunter-gather history are attractive when undertaken by men.

Altruism

A study published in The Journal of Social Psychology observed that both males and females significantly preferred altruistic mates for long-term relationships, and the size of this preference was greater than for other traits in mate choice. Women are especially likely to choose a mate based on his tendency for prosocial behaviour.

Wearing Red

Last but not least, one that doesn’t require a complete personality overhaul or the commitment of owning a pet: wearing red can make you more attractive to women, according to research published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology. A man sporting the vibrant hue is perceived as better looking, more sexually desirable, and higher status.

Perhaps, but the expression is likely to taste like nothing you’ve ever tried. On its voyage the single malt whiskey was exposed to temperatures ranging from zero to 32 degrees centigrade as it travelled around the world, moving with the motion of the ocean and soaking up the salt of the sea air on its epic journey.After its journey around the world the barrel was taken to the STARWARD distillery in Melbourne to be assessed against the same drop that was processed conventionally in the distillery.“The maturation environment is crucial to the final flavour of any whiskey so this was an amazing opportunity to create something different,” said the company’s founder, David Vitale.“There’s no doubt The Seafarer’s odyssey on Queen Elizabeth has resulted in a unique whiskey, which clearly has a great story to tell through its flavours.”“Even if we put a barrel of the same whiskey on another ship for a year, we could never emulate the same weather conditions, so this really is a one-of-a-kind drop.”Those who are lucky enough to get their hands on a bottle of Seafarer will experience the maker’s signature notes of fruit characters and oak influences.“This is a whiskey that’s been on an amazing journey so the result is appropriately epic,” added Vitale.“It’s a special drop so we’re recommending that it should be drunk neat or with a dash of water, so the subtleties of its flavour can be savoured.”Those keen on a bottle will have to go on a cruise on the Queen Elizabeth or roll up to STARWARD’S Port Melbourne distillery for a sample.

Revenant high-performance car maker Alpine is causing quite a stir. Its A110 bantamweight sportscar powers into perhaps the most esoteric niche of the new car market and appears to offer a lot for its $97,000 asking price.

Firstly, there’s the performance, which is courtesy of a 1.8-litre turbo four-cylinder mounted mid-ship behind the seats – of which there are just two. 185kW is enough to get from a standstill to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds – the same as a Porsche 911 Carrera – and it weighs just 1100kg.

Then there’s the styling which, from both an overall perspective and complete effect, looks like absolutely nothing else on the road – except perhaps the 1961 Alpine A110 rally star, which this car invokes.

By this stage you could be thinking the Alpine is your dream performance model and you might be right, but before you dash out to your nearest Renault dealer – because that’s where you’ll find it – let us tell you the ten best and worst things about the Alpine A110.

Exhilarating performance for the purist and minimalist driving junkie

The combination of a brilliant drivetrain, light weight and finely tuned chassis results in one of the greatest driver’s cars on the market. The A110 is fast in a straight line and even faster through corners with a restrained balance of grip, power, and poise. In an age where monstrous forced-induction V8s are becoming more common, the Alpine proves how much can be achieved by stripping back to the basics. Often, it achieves a lot more than vehicles many times more powerful and expensive.

Did someone say cumbersome steering wheel mounted stereo controls?

Renault builds the A110, and the Alpine’s development engineers went to great lengths to distance the range of reasonably priced SUVs and Hatchbacks from their new high-performance hero, but then they got to the stereo controls.

Reach to change the radio station or volume and you’ll find no intuitive knobs and switches. Instead, all the key controls have been banished to a stalk behind the steering wheel. The system actually works quite well, but it takes a bit of getting used to and is a constant reminder of the Alpine’s pedestrian roots.

The lack of seat adjustment or centre arm rest doesn’t help its user-friendliness

The A110’s seats are pure race car with firm but comfortable padding, steep side bolsters and even slots for harness straps. What you might not like however, is that the pair of pews only adjust for leg length. The recline angle is fixed and, while the height can be adjusted, you’ll need an Allen key. There’s also no centre arm rest, which may sound like a minor foible, but you’ll remember our words every time you go to wriggle for a more comfortable position in the bucket seat and fall into the central void.

Those classic good looks that hail from the 1960s are still there

What might initially come across as an awkward bend of retro revival and contemporary design is actually a clever nod to a 1960s classic. The A110 manages to be diminutive but imposing, elegant but aggressive and downright gorgeous.

Slide into the cosy interior and there are more examples of style. The dash is simple but sophisticated and there are good quality materials throughout. We particularly like the all-digital displays, exterior paint that comes indoors and carbon fibre trims in higher grade variants.

You’re guaranteed to get the pronunciation wrong

Officially, the brand’s moniker is pronounced ‘al-peen’ but that’s not how it’s spelled and sounds a little pretentious so you would be forgiven for pronouncing it as it appears.
Do you pronounce the ‘e’ at the end of Porsche? Volkswagen or Wolksvaagen for you? Bee-em double you or Bee-em vee? Consistency is everything so pick one and stick to it.

Its bark is noisier than you think…and that’s fantastic

In a world of five, six, eight, 10 and 12-cylinder engines, you might think the Alpine struggles to raise its voice above some other larger-capacity anthems, but its location is key. With the 1.8-litre engine positioned behind the seats, occupants are subjected to a glorious variety of sounds normally stifled by the bonnet and bulkhead.

Plant your foot in the A110 and its turbo will shriek in your ear, there’s satisfying mechanical noise and a shorter exhaust system has a unique bark above all else. The Alpine’s report is as addictive as its performance.

Incredibly limited storage means you can’t smuggle your child in the boot

Try to stow a load of groceries in the A110’s boot and you’ll be confronted by an engine and a tiny luggage area. Pop the front load bay and you had better only have picked up the essentials because it’s tiny. And it’s the same story in the cabin – no glovebox or door pockets and not even a gesture of a back seat to throw a bag on.

You could argue that a featherweight sports coupe like this does not care for the trappings of mere daily drives and practical day-to-day hatchbacks, but its seriously handicapped storage limits the A110 strictly to a day-tripper only.

You’ll definitely be the coolest kid on the block

Unlike some other excellent sports coupes, it will be a very long time before you see two Alpine A110s on the road together – we’re looking at you Ford Mustang. And that will appeal to many potential Alpine owners.

Whether its affords you more cache than other ultralight sportscars including the Alfa Romeo 4C and Lotus Elise, for now, the new kid on the block is about as fresh as it gets.

There’s a lack of safety features including AEB and reversing camera

Previously exotic safety features such as autonomous emergency braking were once the preserve of high-end luxury kit, but even the Toyota Corolla has it as standard today. Not the Alpine though. Nor does it have a reverse camera – a curious omission since it has the digital display that’s two thirds of the infrastructure. At least it is tiny enough to manoeuvre without too much trouble but we would still expect such features included in any car that nudges $100k.

The ownership experience isn’t as taxing as other cars in the same segment…and it’s bloody fuel efficient too

At the end of the day, the Alpine is a small car with a small engine that can be looked after by a Renault dealership. That means the little A110 is relatively easy to live with from an aftersales perspective. Its 18-inch Michelins won’t break the bank, servicing costs are no more murderous than any Renault and you’ll be laughing at the fuel bowser.

If there’s one thing the Australian Football League is known for it’s NOT fashion. Although it seems tonight for the launch of AFLX they’ve forgotten that and decided to adopt a touch of the NBA ‘baller’ pre game entertainment.

The NBA hand has long been known as sport’s fashion catwalk with players like Russel Westbrook, P.J Tucker and LeBron James’ fashion choices (flex) almost as popular as the game itself. Websites like UpScaleHype wait patiently, reporting on what the players are wearing. Luxury brands such as Gucci, Balenciaga, Thom Browne, John Elliot, Dior, all regularly making the cut.

Now some clever sod at the AFL thought it would be a good idea to take the world’s least fashionable sports league and do something similar. Genius at work. Take good old fashioned footy blokes, get a PR agency to dress them and then emulate the likes of Ben Simmons’ pre game flex. (Insert Nick Young meme)

Instead of Ben’s black and electric blue Rolls Royce Wraith, we get Alex Rance on an electric skateboard.

In fairness to Alex Rance, his white double breasted suit was undoubtedly the highlight of the event. Tim Membrey kept it low key R.M. Williams farmer dude, Thomas Rockliff went for a Russian gangster inspired tracksuit while Dylan Shiel opted for red Moncler puffer (which was cool af).

Is the AFL audience really ready for this? Collingwood’s supporters are definitely not.

Well he’s done it again. The male pop star of the moment Shawn Mendes stepped out at the Brit Awards 2019 this week in one of the coolest pared down suits you’ll ever seen.

Some may argue its simplicity but it all comes down the the relaxed details helped by the Paul Smith designed grey number. Mendes’ minimalist look comprised of a beautifully fitted chalk grey suit worn over a black dress shirt – three buttons down for that effortless look.

Minor details that add a bit of spice to the outfit includes a solid bracelet, necklace and a very subtle earring. In the shoe department it was all about the polished black boots.

This wouldn’t be the first time Mendes has opted for this look on the red carpet. If you follow his exploits you’ll find that he also pulled off a similar look for past events.

All eyes on Mendes in his Paul Smith tailored suit. Pay attention to where the sleeves and trouser cuffs end. The suit is also cut close to his body to help Mendes appear taller in photos.

A close up of the details shows minimal accessories and even the absence of a pocket square.

As we mentioned before, this isn’t the first time Mendes has pulled this look. He rocked the navy tuxedo and black shirt combo at the Billboard Music Awards.

He’s even done the grey windowpane and black shirt combo complete with polished burgundy boots. So there you have it. If you ever need to go casual whilst looking damn stylish, this is how to do it.
