Doctors Reveal Some Of The Most Dangerous Medical Problems They’ve Seen Overlooked
Doctors Reveal Some Of The Most Dangerous Medical Problems They’ve Seen Overlooked

Life in the 21st century is pretty cushy compared to the stone age. However, surrounded as we are with cutting edge comforts (iPhones, Netflix etc.), we are still (more or less) stuck with the bodies of our Paleolithic ancestors.

Of course, medicine is significantly better. But no matter how skilled doctors and nurses become, there will always be ailments that slip through the cracks, or which don’t get the attention they need early enough. Hence the utility of today’s Reddit thread, “Doctors of Reddit, what’s your ’thank god they came in for a second opinion’ moment?”

Whether it’s something most people wouldn’t bother checking out in the first place or something that a medical professional has missed, these are some of the most dangerous medical problems that the Doctors Of Reddit suggest you should seek a second opinion on.

Small Lump On The Testicles

The most upvoted post came from a doctor explaining how a “22 yo guy came in (to see him)” after telling his usual doctor he had a headache.

“I did a usual full review of symptoms since he was new and he also marked his left testicle had a (small, hard) lump.”

“I (suspected) right away (he) likely had metastatic testicular cancer,” the doctor said, adding that a brain scan and a testicular ultrasound “later confirmed it.”

He also asked the guy if he had told the other doctor about the lump, to which he said yes, “But the other doctor told him it was normal.”

“So fellows, if you note a lump on your testicle ask for an ultrasound and don’t be embarrassed to bring it up.”

Weird Pupils

Another instructive story comes from an eye doctor who had a patient come in for a routine check up, before getting some new glasses: “She was a 50yo woman, fairly normal exam, perfect vision, retinas showed healthy, but something about her pupils really bothered me before I dilated.”

“We chatted about it and I asked her if she banged her head or anything weird and she said no, but suddenly reveals this crazy history of an old Meningioma (a type of brain cancer) she had removed a few years ago,” the doctor added.

“She had decided to omit this from her history with us as she didn’t feel it was important, but we went and put it into the charts anyway.”

“Turns out she got a CT done two weeks prior to her exam with me which she says turns up completely normal. I tell her she should tell her doctor about this anyway just to cover our bases. Fast Forward; “Patient shows up in my office… to tell me that my examination revealed that her tumor had returned with an incredible vengeance.”

“She had no idea, was totally asymptomatic and the CT she had prior to me showed what was very literally the size of a spec of dust which the radiologist dismissed as artifact,” which goes to show how quickly things can change. “On her return to her doctor, they decided to re-run the CT to cover THEIR Bases, and they found a quarter-sized tumour.”

“She was rushed into emergency surgery… had it removed that day and returned to me after recovery to tell me of what got discovered as a result of my testing. She is now a long time regular patient I have been seeing for about 10 years.”

Skin Problems

Another common ailment which could (emphasis on could—you want to be sensible, not paranoid) turn out to be serious is a skin problem, as the following doctor recounts: “Dermatologist here—I have seen probably 5 instances of ‘My other doctor told me it was fine,’ that were melanomas.”

“A lot of times people don’t want a full skin exams. There are lots of perfectly sane reasons for this, time, perceived cost, history of personal trauma. However, I routinely find cancers people don’t know they have,” he added.

“Keep this in mind if you see a dermatologist for acne and they recommend you get in a gown.”

10 Timex Watches That Will Keep You Stylishly Punctual For Under $300
10 Timex Watches That Will Keep You Stylishly Punctual For Under $300

Ah, Timex – you may have heard of the name but known little about this humble American watch company that was founded in 1854 as the Waterbury Clock Company in Connecticut, a firm which specialised in manufacturing clocks using brass wheels and gears before moving onto defence instruments.

Timex History

Fast forward almost 90 years and a man named Thomas Olsen would purchase the Waterbury Clock Company in 1941 before renaming the company as Timex. His business partner Joakim Lehmkuhl would also play a pivotal role following the the end of the Korean war in the 1950s in which defence equipment – tools produced by the company – was waning in demand.

Lehmkuhl was convinced that an inexpensive watch that was both accurate and durable would be a marketing success. He felt that low cost could be accomplished through the combination of automation, precision tooling techniques used in making fuse timers, and a simpler design than that of higher-priced Swiss watches. Durability was accomplished through a new hard alloy, ‘Armalloy’, developed through wartime research. The material was used to produce long wearing bearings, replacing the expensive jewels traditionally used in a watch’s movements. These innovations led to the eventual public debut of the Timex brand in 1950.

How To Wear Timex Watches

Daily wearability and affordability still rings true to the large range Timex watches of today. Many of them now employ the inexpensive Quartz movement which allows Timex to keep prices in check whilst focusing on heritage design instead.

What does this mean for the daily watch aficionado? Choices to suit any look or style without breaking the bank. The ten Timex watches we’ve hand picked are made for every type of man.

The full stainless steel construction of the Easy Reader Day Date perfectly pairs to more formal occasions whilst the black knurled casing of the Allied LT is best suited to more semi-casual affairs that demand a bit of flair – think denim, casual jackets and motorcycles. TImex’s Expedition and Coastal models are more robust units built for exploration and adventure so pair these with your best outdoor gear. Those who want to go black tie without breaking bank can opt for the slick design of the Fairfield Chronograph or Marlin Automatic – both easily paired with a tuxedo or black suit.

There’s even a military watch to round out the crop to ensure that any personality is catered to in good time. Check out the cool selection below and then find out the right way to wear them with your clothes.

Pierce Brosnan Proved That A Retired 007 Agent Can Still Dress Better Than You
Pierce Brosnan Proved That A Retired 007 Agent Can Still Dress Better Than You

So Pierce Brosnan is 66-years-old now and according to Dr. Google the current age for retirement is approximately 65 years and 6 months. If our calculations are correct this makes Brosnan a senior and the only seniors that can rival him are far and few between – give or take a Jeff Goldblum or Michael Keaton.

The Golden Eye star was recently spotted in Los Angeles running errands in what is arguably one of the coolest errand uniforms ever. There’s nothing special about it to be honest, but it’s the way Brosnan throws it altogether along with his unwavering steely charisma that makes this look work wonders.

That winning look comprises of a navy suede bomber jacket, black polo shirt, regular cut denim and woven black leather slip-ons. The tinted lens on a transparent sunglass frame help in taking this dad-core look to the next level, as does the immaculate hairstyle and groomed beard.

Silver fox, suede, denim, leather…did we miss anything? Of course – the watch. Brosnan polished it off nicely with an elegant Girard-Perregaux Vintage 1945 watch.

The timepiece features a distinctive square case in gold alongside a white dial that bears a small seconds subdial, power reserve indicator and date display between 1 and 2 o’clock paired to a brown leather strap. Punters can expect to pay in the region of $15,000 for one of these pieces.

Bow down to the old man who can dress better than you. And your father. And probably his father, too.

This Rare Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake Can Now Be Yours…For $1.2 Million
This Rare Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake Can Now Be Yours…For $1.2 Million

When it comes to modern classics it doesn’t get any slicker than this. One of just 99 Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brakes ever built just got listed for sale on Bonhams and it’s in right hand drive. That means Australian buyers will have the opportunity to get behind the wheel of this stunning V12 wagon…should they have a lazy AU$1,200,000 – $1,400,000 hidden in their ceiling.

The Zagato name is a special one that has appeared alongside Aston Martin models in the past. As an independent Italian styling house the company has helped the British marque push their design boundaries in the DB7 Zagato, DB AR1 and the V8 Zagato Coupé just to name a few. The current 2019 Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake forms a family of four modern Zagato models that have been built on Aston Martin’s V12 Vanquish platform – a Speedster, a Coupé, and a Volante being the other three. Zagato reflects a rich reputation in building lightweight aerodynamic sports and GT cars and some of its clients have included Alfa Romeo and Lancia. The evidence of course can be seen in the sharp and swooping design of the Shooting Brake.

Build number 68 of 99 has travelled just 69km from new so you’re essentially paying for a garage queen with a unique spec list – it’s one of only three believed to have the bronze front and rear grilles. Under the bonnet is the aforementioned naturally aspirated V12 with 440kW that’s mated to a Touchtronic III eight-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the rear wheels.

And whilst it may look practical, the Shooting Brake is strictly a two-seater wrapped with the iconic Zagato ‘double-bubble’ profile complete with glass inlays to let light flood into the cockpit.

Ready to invest in an appreciating asset? Express your interest over at Bonhams now.

Iceland Just Banned Tourists From Visiting This Location & It’s Justin Bieber’s Fault
Iceland Just Banned Tourists From Visiting This Location & It’s Justin Bieber’s Fault

Arguably one of the most breathtaking locations in the world is Fjadrargljufur canyon located in the south east of Iceland. Want to go see it? Too bad – the park rangers have just banned all tourists from seeing it and it’s Justin Bieber‘s fault.

The lush green vertical mountains that stand at 100m tall snake for 2 kilometres and was featured in Justin Bieber’s music video, I’ll Show You. Since then hoards of Beliebers have been making the pilgrimage to the location to follow in the cult leader’s pop star’s footsteps.

The issue, according to local ranger Hanna Johannsdottir, is that the narrow gravel road and vulnerable landscape can no longer sustain the intense influx of visitors. For the moment, Iceland’s priority is to protect their volcanic landscape where soil can form slowly and erode quickly. For this reason, Johannsdottir’s team had to erect fences and signs to deter visitors. Even on her watch Johannsdottir says that she’s had tourists offering her bribes in exchange for the ultimate selfie.

“Food from people’s home country is the most common bribery,” says Johannsdottir. Her most recent bribe however was a free trip to Dubai. She declined the offer.

Beiber’s music video has been viewed by more than 440 million times on YouTube since 2015. Environment Minister Gudmundur Ingi Gudbrandsson was reluctant to put all the blame on Bieber though and said that all famous or influential visitors should consider the consequences of exposing such a delicate environment to their followers.

“In Justin Bieber’s defence, the canyon did not, at the time he visited, have rope fences and designated paths to show what was allowed and what not,” Gudbrandsson said. “Rash behaviour by one famous person can dramatically impact an entire area if the mass follows,” he added.

In other words, street’s closed pizza boy – take your map and backpack elsewhere.

Future Just Bought His 5-Year-Old Son A Rolex & It Made Us Wonder Where Our Life Went Wrong

Fifth birthdays can be a fickle affair in 2019. Do you get the kid a toy. Do you get them a jumping castle. Do you throw them a jumping castle filled with toys. None of the above, according to American rapper Future...you simply gift them a gold Rolex Datejust and wait for their reaction.

If Anyone Has Ever ‘Complimented’ You Like This At Work, It’s Actually An Insult
If Anyone Has Ever ‘Complimented’ You Like This At Work, It’s Actually An Insult

We’ve all been complimented, at one time or another, only to sit back on it five minutes later and question the sincerity of the complimentee’s goodwill. From, “Your hair looks good… for once,” to, “You look great… for your age,” there is an unending stockpile of backhanded tributes one might receive.

When it comes to your friends, relatives and even ‘frenemies’, you can probably let it go. After all: it’s not going to affect your ability to purchase a Rolex. However, when these sneaky insults come from a co-worker, a boss or a client, you really need to be switched on to it, both for your sanity and for your career progression.

To help you with this aim, we did a little research into some common—hidden—office insults and sought professional expertise from Psychology Today and Monster in how to deal with them in an effective, courteous manner. So, without further preamble, here they are.

Hey, You’re On Time!

If a co-worker shows surprise at your arrival you know they’re either an anal *sshole (as in, you’re normally on time, but were late yesterday and have now returned to your timely ways) or you have a punctuality problem.

The solution? No need to consult the experts for this one. Just get to the darned office on time (and if you’re late maybe don’t stop by Starbucks for a large iced-coffee).

Wow, You Look Very Professional Today

If your boss treats your 10/10 outfit as an anomaly then you know you need to step up your game. If it comes from a jealous co-worker, however, then take heed from the experts over at Psychology Today, and respond with humour (“I didn’t realise the word professional existed in your vocabulary!”) or by ignoring it.

I Appreciated The Wisdom In What You’re Saying, But…

If your manager says this to you, then, as the good people over at Psychology Today admit, sometimes you just need to accept it: “This may seem like a very weak response, but in many cases is actually the strongest response of all.”

“If the insult is true or largely true, the person it came form is reasonable, and his motive is worthy, then the insult is not an insult but a statement of fact and, what’s more, one that is potentially very helpful to us.”

If it comes from a rival co-worker, however, you may want to return the insult. While not strictly professional, Thought Catalogue have some hilariously classy putdowns like, “I have neither the time nor the crayons to explain this to you.” Use them at your own discretion.

I’m So Impressed You’re Handling This Project So Well

Read: I didn’t think you were capable of this. While this indicated you have done well this time, you may need to work on projecting your capabilities if you want to be considered for a promotion or a pay rise.

You Did A Fantastic Job Handling That Project On Your Own

Read: you are an efficient employee, but we are questioning whether you are really as much of a “team player” as you claimed to be on your CV. If this sounds like you, remember, while they aren’t everything—optics really matter. Adjust your behaviour accordingly.

As for some general rules for dealing with office criticism, here’s what experts recommend:
  • React only when necessary
  • Don’t go into attack mode
  • Don’t conront your insulter via email
  • Focus on the big picture
  • Don’t take it personally
  • Accept that not everyone like you
  • Share your concerns
