Did you know that this Saturday is World Whisky Day? Yes, indeed. A whole day dedicated to trying a dram or two and celebrating the delicious brown elixir of life. It’s one thing to express your love of whisky, whether it be on social media, to your mates, or perhaps by shouting it from the rooftops, but to celebrate it like a magnificent bastard is simple really, and all it requires is a bottle of whisky and some good company.
World Whisky Day launched in 2012 and since then has aimed to make whisky, and the drinking of it, fun and enjoyable, without being exclusive or prescriptive. Whether you’re a man who loves his whisky with ice, water or a cheeky mixer, there are plenty of ways you can get involved.
From top distilleries in Scotland, to events in Sydney and lounge rooms in Canada, Russia and beyond there are plenty of events happening all over the world where you can swill whisky and chat about the flavours, subtleties and history of the golden nectar with other like minded whisky-lovers.
In Sydney, ‘The Whisky Show’ is the main attraction on World Whisky Day, featuring loads of exhibitors and about 200 different Whiskies across 50 brands.
If you’re keen to keep it low key, of course, you can host your own World Whisky Day event at home by registering online, and picking yourself up a bottle or two from Dan Murphy’s or Liquorland from the Johnnie Walker Range. Whether it be Gold Label, Platinum Label, Blue Label or another classic, Johnnie Walker has your World Whisky Day plans sorted.
George Bernard Shaw called it “liquid sunshine”, James Joyce referred to it as “light music” falling into a glass, but to us, it’s just good old fashioned whisky and what better time to enjoy it than on World Whisky Day this weekend.

It’s a given that we suffer from a bit of Tall Poppy Syndrome here in Australia, so that’s why when the office douchebag starts bragging about his promotion or pay rise we tend to feel that burn of jealously bad. A recent study, however, suggests that career jealousy could actually be good for you.
Research shows that malicious envy (when you have destructive feelings about others) doesn’t actually improve performance benign envy (the kind that spurs self-reflection and self-improvement) is actually a healthy motivator and leads to better performance.
Apparently, the jealousy you feel, whether it be about someone’s job satisfaction or pay check is telling you something about what you want and can become a tool for getting what you want.
So don’t start gluing old mate’s stapler to the desk in hopes of a mood boost, but by letting your jealousy motivate you, you could be kicking goals in no time.

Travelling from Sydney to London in less than two hours is no longer a farfetched concept following a successful hypersonic test flight conducted by an international team, including University of Queensland researchers and students.
The experimental rocket, called HiFiRE 5B, hit targeted speeds of Mach 7.5 (9,200kmph) and reached a height of 278 kilometres from earth, after being launched from the Woomera Test Range in South Australia.
Researchers from UQ, Defence Science and Technology Group, the US Air Force Research Laboratory, Boeing and HiFiRE (Hypersoic International Flight Research Experimentation Program) were involved in the project.
Professor Michael Smart from UQ’s School of Mechanical and Mining Engineering said the flight placed the Australian aerospace industry on the international stage.
“UQ is pleased to be part of a group of highly skilled individuals doing cutting edge research,” he said. “We’re excited by the contributions this and future HIFiRE flights will make to the advancement of hypersonic flight technology.”
HiFiRE 5B is one of 10 experimental flights as part of the international collaboration which investigates the physical phenomenon of flying faster than five times the speed of sound.
“The knowledge gained from these experiments will be applied to develop future flight vehicles and testing of advanced air-breathing hypersonic propulsion engines, known as scramjets,” Professor Smart said.
Chief Defence Scientist Dr Alex Zelinsky said hypersonic flight has the potential to provide immense social and economic benefits.
“The success of this test launch takes us one step closer to the realisation of hypersonic flight,” Dr Zelinsky said.
“It is a game-changing technology identified in the 2016 Defence White Paper and could revolutionise global air travel, providing cost-effective access to space.”
The program is aimed at exploring the fundamental technologies critical to the realisation of sustained hypersonic flight.
Boeing’s chief scientist for hypersonics Kevin Bowcutt said the HiFiRE program will accelerate the development of operational hypersonic systems by producing valuable scientific flight data.
The HiFiRE team has already achieved some significant milestones such as the design, assembly and pre-flight testing of the hypersonic vehicles and the design of complex avionics and flight systems.
More test flights from Woomera are scheduled in 2017.

The Eiffel Tower, the Great Wall of China, and Big Ben may be three of the world’s most recognisable structures, but none of them make TripAdvisor’s latest list. The travel reviews site has revealed the winners of its 2016 Travelers’ Choice Awards and named the world’s most beloved landmarks.
“These Travelers’ Choice award-winning landmarks attract millions of visitors each year and represent some of the world’s most impressive examples of human ingenuity,” said Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor.
Many traditional favourites miss the list for more unexpected options, though you’ll still find a strong showing of classics. Check out the list above and let us know what it missed in the comments.

The demands of today’s smartphone wielding man is nothing short of astronomical. Whether you’re using it to churn through the list of meetings or trying to figure out the best ramen joints in your city, the latest Apple iPhone has the processing power to satisfy your greatest needs.
Alas, getting the most out of the new iPhone is an entirely different ball game. Men rarely read instructions (guilty) so we’ve taken the liberty to scouring the interweb to find six simple ways to make using your iPhone 6S and SE a lot faster so you can get on with the real task at hand.
#1 ‘Peek & Pop’ To Operate Apps Quicker
Apple has taken the liberty to add 3D Touch on their iPhone 6s and SE models. Users can now press into the screen of the phone for a bunch of shortcuts that pop up without having to lift your finger off the screen. Whether it’s quickly seeing the contents of an email (swipe left or right to mark as read or delete an email), viewing a webpage or your iCal to see if you are free for beers on Friday night, users can get a quick glance at what’s going on with Peek and Pop. It’s fast, it’s easy and you can even use it to add that hottie’s contact with just one step.
#2 New Siri Is Crazy Good At Saving You Time
The “Hey, Siri” voice command on iPhone 6s and SE now recognises your voice. that means ditching the middle button for hands-free requests from the world’s quirkiest digital assistant. New features allow you to ask specifics such as the best route home or to call someone if you hands are full. Simply talk to Siri as you would to a friend (not your girlfriend) and it can help you get things done on the go.
#3 Capture Memories Instead Of Still Photos
iPhone 6s and SE can now take something called Live Photos. It’s essentially a GIF creator in high quality which works by capturing the moment around the still image like waves crashing against rocks the shore or a panting dog. Perfect for all your meme generating needs without the hassle of taking a fully fledged video.
#4 Convenient Front Flash For Taking Selfies
We’re not condoning the act of selfies but when you’ve got a bunch of friends and no one to take the photo, the deed needs to be done. And if you’re going to do it, make sure the final result is the best it can be. The new iPhone SE and 6s now uses the front facing Face Time camera as the capture lens whilst the screen acts as a flashlight to help give more vibrant images. It’s no one trick pony either as sensors can detect how much light is in the room before adjusting the white screen flash intensity.
#5 Burst Mode To Capture The Perfect Shot
Holding down the shutter button now continuously captures 10 photos per second. This means you can keep capturing movement to get that perfect shot for things like moving cars, street style snaps or sporting shots.
#6 Pay For Sneakers From Your iPhone
The latest transaction phase has arrived in Australia. Using Apple Wallet, load up an American Express credit card or ANZ card and use your iPhone to make payments. Each transaction requires your fingerprint to authenticate the payment so security is rarely an issue. Wearers of Apple Watch can also pay straight from their wrist even if the iPhone is at home. No money, no worries.

If you were already steadily feeding an online shopping addiction, then prepare to be even more stuck to your screen with the news that iconic Australian retail giant Myer have teamed up with the country’s largest online marketplace eBay for the world’s first virtual reality department store.
The concept, which has been 12 months in the making, is simple as 1, 2, 3. All it requires is a VR headset, an iOS or Android device and the ‘eBay Virtual Reality Department Store’ app. When the app launches, customers can choose their departments of interest and browse from a custom virtual store that reflects these selections, navigating with just a ‘gaze’.
By hovering over a certain product, customers can view a 3D model and by hovering on information icons, view details like product specifications, price, availability and shipping details. See something you want to buy? Just shift your gaze to the “Add to Basket” icon which will take you to eBay to complete your purchase.
“Currently there are over 12,000 products providing a good range of inventory. The entire product range, pricing and stock information will also be updated in real-time which is a first for virtual reality experiences globally,” said eBay’s Senior Director Marketing, Advertising Sales & Retail Innovation Steve Brennan.
Does the virtual reality department store mark the end of multi-level schlepping and the real deal? According to Myer Chief Digital & Data Officer Mark Cripsey, there is no threat. “We are all about bringing the online shopping experience to life and we feel this is a great experiment to see if customers enjoy the virtual world as much as they do when they walk into a Myer department store.”
We can’t promise you won’t look a little weird flipping through a rack of clothes with your head, but it does mean no more pesky sales assistants or weekend crowds. From today, eBay and Myer and giving away 15,000 “shopticals” – specifically designed virtually reality viewers – for free.

It’s been Google a long time coming but Google has finally launched their own instant messaging service which will be available as an app on iOS and Android handsets.
Called Allo, the instant messaging service will be easily distinguishable from its existing Google Hangouts and G Chat platforms that have been run on G-mail in the past. Allo will instead be a standalone messaging service similar to Whatsapp with a wider range of customisable texting features as well as Snapchat’s popular drawing feature.
It’s a tough ask to get the billions of users around the world from changing over to a new messaging platform but if Viber and Facebook could do it, Google also has a good chance. Backing up this venture is Google’s own built-in search assistant, similar to Apple’s Siri, which you can ask questions and make reservations from.
Google searches via Allo will come with Chrome’s Incognito Mode which encrypts conversations from end-to-end for peace of mind.
Allo will launch later this year and be free to download on iOS and Android.

You’ve played all your cards right and you’ve scored a date with a lady, back at your place. But when that door swings open, what will she see? If it’s your dirty undies hanging off the bed post, a pile of wet towels and/or kitschy print linen you inherited from your mum, she’ll be running out that door faster than you can pour her a glass of cheap wine.
Instead, take some interior style cues from this amazing minimalist apartment in Krakow, Poland. Designed by BLACKHAUS Karol Ciepliñski Architekt, the apartment dates back to 1934 and is absolutely ideal for the single man on-the-go. Its clean white walls and kitchen leave room for more inviting characteristics like wooden floorboards and clever accessories like a magnificent deer head mounted on the wall, an intricate armchair, lush plants and minimalistic wooden side table.
The best part of this Krakow apartment has to be the bathroom. Almost all-black, the bathroom features quirky optical illusion floor tiles, a simple basin, stunning round mirror and an uber-arty ceiling print of the Johannes Vermeer’s classic painting ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’. You’ll be scoring multiple sleepovers and appear very much the cultured bastard in this Polish gem.
