Unless you’ve been on a strict wifi detox all week, you’ll know a cultural cornerstone of the world was almost razed to the ground on Monday. If it weren’t for 500 or so firefighters, the heart of Paris—the point from which all distances are measured—could have ended up a scar in the ground. As it was, the fire was put out—but not before consuming two-thirds of the iconic cathedral’s roofing, destroying a spire, damaging the high altar and calling the structural integrity of the entire edifice into question. But as the public grieves the loss of a monument which has inspired wonder and awe for centuries (and as historians, architects and millionaires debate whether US$960 million can possibly restore Notre Dame’s intangible glory), a glance at Tripadvisor’s Notre Dame reviews proves how spoiled some travellers really are.Full disclosure: there have been over 68,997 TripAdvisor reviews of the Notre Dame, the majority of them (69%, to be precise) leaving “excellent” ratings. However, a minority of self-proclaimed critics (2%, if we’re being picky) gave this majestic pillar of human achievement a “poor” or “terrible” rating. If this was just a couple of contrarians taking cheap shots at a popular piece of architecture, we could let it go. However, there’s more to it than that. These ‘reviewers’ didn’t just smear one of the gothic eras most sublime creations; they proved modern-day travellers are more well ‘grammed than well read.

Think about it: although the fierce atheists and religious fundamentalists of bygone eras were crusty dogmatists with irreconcilable differences, at least they knew how to appreciate good architecture. For this new generation of Tripadvisor critics though, it’s rare that a historical artefact can live up to the expertly curated Instagram photos they’ve already seen (from the comfort of their Dorito-stained sofas). How do I know this? Despite not penning them on the internet, most of these lazy Tripadvisor Observations have crossed my mind around two-minutes into any bout of sight-seeing I’ve ever taken. Which suggests the number of Oblivious Faultfinders in the world may be much higher than the TripAdvisor statistics indicate. To give you an idea, here’s a smattering.
“Much like everything else in Paris. It’s just a church, take a photo and move on.”
Ouch. But I suppose when you’ve got croissants to eat, L’Ami Louis (the ‘worst’ restaurant in the world) to visit and the Moulin Rouge to see, time goes fast. Oh, and—speaking of time—our next displeased reviewer had this to say…
“People lining up to get inside when there is no entry ticket required; many just stand there neither want to go in nor want to move away from the entrance, taking selfies and pictures making it difficult for others who want to go in.”
Not content with that little rant, he added: “Once inside, it is very dark and gloomy. It might be very old but gives one shivers and (a) spooky feeling. We just went in and hurried out. There is a small (overly priced) souvenir shop inside also crowded like crazy.”
“Not worth going in even for free,” (Anon, March 2019).
Our next sarky remark came from a man who expected it to be easy to evacuate his bowels in the middle of a 12th-century masterpiece, during tourist high season: “2 euros for toilets (not mentioning that if you don’t have change, forget it). 100 m away, in the nearest café, for 1.30 euro, you can have a coffee and clean toilets.”The next few, spanning from October 2018 until the present day, didn’t mince words.“Nothing special.”“Disappointing.”“Too crowded”.The worst part of it all? Just like many other fickle ‘travellers’, I was sorely tempted to post a ‘throwback’ photo to my time in France, despite spending the majority of my sightseeing tour in a hungover fugue-state.Nonetheless, before we get caught up in rampant negativity, there were a few choice insights to be found, which—in hindsight—suggest the magic of the Notre Dame may have already been on its way out before the fire even began.“Such a bummer—when I was a student in Paris I loved to visit Notre Dame. As with all the cathedrals in Paris, (it) would provide a sense of solitude in the midst of great beauty. These days Paris is just way too crowded and the main… attractions can’t even be enjoyed due to the crowds and behaviour of the people (noisy, constant selfies etc).”
“The line does move quickly, but does not end until you have left the church.”
Also, prophetically:“The magnificence of this holy site is now lost under an avalanche of entitled, pushy, rude disrespectful tourists ticking off sites on their all inclusive pass. I am sorry I made the effort, it’s a site that could easily be closed to the public.”Whether you agree with them or think they’re a bunch of whiners—if you haven’t already been—you might have to wait from anywhere between three and forty years to decide for yourself, as that’s how long it’s going to take to rebuild.

Aside from protecting your eyes from the harm inflicted by the sun, sunglasses – along with jewellery – are a significant accessory for any man. They say a lot more about you than you think, as sunglasses reflect your style, your personality, whether you’re trendy or timeless, your hobbies, and even your income.
Don’t panic though; we’ve got you covered. When it comes to men’s sunglasses, these are the most important things to consider: you want to invest in a high-quality pair that will both suit your face shape (if you’re unsure of your face shape or what sunglasses will suit you; read this before purchasing a new pair), and keep your eyes safe with UV protection.
There are some foolproof styles that have been around for decades, such as the Aviator and Wayfarer styles, made famous by Ray-Ban. However, recent trends have seen men favouring thick-framed sunglasses and pairs in more unusual colours. How long this trend will last remains to be seen.
Best sunglasses for men FAQs
When were sunglasses invented?
The term sunglasses was first used in 1929 when Sam Foster (founder of Foster Grant) launched a pair of sunglasses made from celluloid. However, spectacles and other instruments used to block the sun's rays have been used since prehistoric times.
How do you fix scratched sunglasses?
It can be quite tricky to fix scratched sunglasses lenses, so your best bet is to just have the lenses replaced.
Which sunglasses have the best lenses?
What can be considered to be the 'best lenses' will likely come down to personal preference. However, brands that offer polarised lenses are said to be the best quality because they're able to block a larger proportion of sun rays, significantly reducing glare and potential damage to your eyes.

Well it was bound to happen. This week British luxury carmaker Aston Martin unveiled their first ever fully electric production car and it’s the one sources are saying will be the car that Daniel Craig drives in the upcoming James Bond film – number 25 to be exact.
Aston Martin unveiled the limited edition 155 unit car at the Shanghai auto show this week which sees co-development duties with Williams Advanced Engineering. The stats and facts aren’t the most important thing though.
According to The Sun, an insider revealed that director Cary Joji Fukunaga insisted that Bond get behind the wheel of the new electric car in order to boost the character’s eco-friendly credentials.
“The decision was spearheaded by the film’s new director, who’s a total tree-hugger. He is working directly with Aston Martin to get one of their electric cars ready for its big close-up. It’s going to be the centre of an incredible action sequence in the movie.
“It’s going to have all the high-tech gadgets. To be clear, this is something Cary pushed for and Daniel and the producers are going along with. Everybody is afraid of Bond getting labelled ‘too PC’ but they all felt the time was right to put him in a zero emission vehicle.”
Now that’s a big call to make as it could be misinterpreted as Bond going soft, but a quick glance at the car’s performance figures should quieten the hastiest of haters.
The Rapide E packs an 800-volt battery system powering twin rear electric motors for a combined output of over 600hp and a gut-busting 950Nm of torque to see the car hit 100km/h in less than 4 seconds. Top speed? 250km/h. For the more pragmatic driver there’s a range of more than 320km per charge.
The car will feature the full host of adaptive driving characteristics expected of modern cars including a GT, Sport, and Sport+ modes. On the outside there’s forged alloy wheels and low rolling resistance Pirelli tyres.
But back to Bond: We’re not sure how well this car’s carbon offset credentials will fair if Q decides to fit missiles and flame throwers to it.

He’s Jeff Goldblum for a reason and his latest choice in wardrobe proves why he’s in a race all of his own. Without so much as raising an eyebrow from PETA (they probably love Jeff, too), the timeless Mr. Goldblum rocked up to the 2019 TCM 10th Annual Classic Film Festival this week in a wild bowler shirt with a fur lining across the shoulder. Like a fur coat…but a bowler shirt. We’re just going to go out on a limb and say it’s still alive.
Is this man mad? Mad stylish is more likely and he has his stylist Andrew Vottero to thank for it. Goldblum paired the blue shirt with floral motifs that no man could pull off (except maybe Elton John) with a pair of fine checked trousers in monochrome. Matching that was a pair of split toe shoes finished in polished leather and zebra skin. It’s an eclectic ensemble which looks a bit outlandish even on the man who created it, but it somehow works.
Here’s a closer look at Goldblum’s flamboyant shirt with his funky reading glasses. More into shades? The man also has you covered thanks to Prada eyewear.

What will Goldblum do next? Hopefully not fur lined underwear.

While Ibiza and Magaluf are still young revellers’ destinations of choice, as the Fyre Festival Fiasco showed, in this day and age all it takes is an influencer to recline somewhere nice and it’s liable to become a tourist hotspot.
As reported by News.com.au, “Young tourists seeking booze and sex have found a new location — a place called Sunny Beach where, according to visitors, anything goes.”
This beachside resort is located on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coastline, a place formerly known for chilled out water sports and the like, but which is now experiencing a deluge of visitors.
Facilitated by the rise of budget airlines, travellers are flocking to this sun-drenched escape, chilling out by day at Sunny Beach (the cheapest resort in Europe) and partying by night at Bedroom Beach (one of the more lavish, expensive clubs in Europe).

Thanks to this, the resort town has become a veritable Ibiza Alternative. But it’s about as far away from a hippie ‘collective’ as it’s possible to be, attracting local and international influencers alike.

From Cristina Zayats (a dance teacher, model and Instagram phenomenon with 16.5k followers) to smaller time Bulgarian social media users (like Marina Pivovarchik) showcasing Sunny Beach’s beauty, it’s no surprise that the number of tourists visiting the town is on the rise.
Oh and the love for Sunny Beach isn’t just limited to sun-seeking Brits and Bulgarian influencers, with Jenna Stella, a French dancer telling her followers she comes to this getaway as often as possible.

As reported by The Sun, “More than 281,000 Brits visited Bulgaria in 2017 — most of whom went straight to Sunny Beach.” Meanwhile, Bulgaria’s Tourism Minister says the number of US visitors visiting Bulgaria rose 10.4% in 2018, and Balkan Insight statistics suggest numbers have been on the rise since at least 2015.

A tranquil coastal paradise with a bit of fun on the side? Alas, not anymore.
While Tripadvisor reviews from as recently as 2012 marvel at the place’s class, with Ryan Thomas from the UK remarking: “It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen… everyone was extremely well dressed, no one… drunk slapping around making a fool out themselves,” it appears that is no longer the case.
View this post on Instagram
Recent reports suggest the place will go the same way as Kuta, Magaluf and Ibiza, with Brits who have worked summer seasons there claiming to have witnessed unbelievably wild antics, “Including mass nudity, public brawls and crazy drunken excess,” (News.com.au).
While those exact qualities may attract a certain type of traveller, if you’ve outgrown paint and foam parties then may we suggest these luxurious off grid escapes, designed specifically to quiet the modern traveller’s mind.

Bread. Enemy number one of the new years resolution and just about anyone you’ll encounter at the gym in a supplements singlet. But is there actually any grounding for such hatred towards the beloved carb? Nutrition coach Graeme Tomlinson doesn’t think so.
“When trying to manage one’s weight, assumption often leads one to remove bread from their diet, or at least replace heavily refined white bread with slightly less refined brown bread,” he explained in his latest Instagram post.
View this post on Instagram
“But as we can see, in terms of energy, there is no difference between white or brown bread. And whilst the latter contains more fibre (which may increase satiety – the feeling of fullness), one would be better placed to evaluate total ingredients consumed with said bread in order to determine a more holistic picture. Because bread is rarely consumed alone.”
Tomlinson believes that it’s the ingredients which we pair to the culprit bread that equates to extra calories. He demonstrated this ideal by placing two slices of bread next to one another- 40g of brown bread and 40g of white bread. Enter peanut butter jelly time. On both slices Tomlinson adds a generous smearing of the spread and this immediately triples the total calorie count of both slices from 95 cal to 330 cal.
“Consequently, all of a sudden the debate is not about consumption of bread in the first instance, or it’s colour in the second,” says Tomlinson. As another example Tomlinson explains that simply adding 10g of butter to a slice of bread will cause the ‘bread’ to go from 95 cal to 180 cal, so is it really the bread’s fault? No.
“Though apparently insignificant, it is the butter that virtually doubles the calorie value of what we perceive as ‘bread’.”
The better way to perceive bread is by looking at it as a standalone food item or a single caloric variable. Based off Tomlinson’s graphic, peanut butter simple adds a second caloric variable and similarly a third for peanut butter. “And the latter two are inherently more calorie dense than bread,” he adds.
This calorie variable model is something that should be applied to any fitness freak’s diet rationale, according to the nutritionist with 403,000 followers. Understanding this should help people distance themselves from the unwarranted demonisation of foods which can be utilised as energy just like any other type.
“To catastrophise bread as a nutritional problem is to catastrophise a minuscule variable out of many. A calorie surplus over time results in weight gain, not bread.”
In a separate study from 2015 published by the National Institute of Health, researchers addressed the relationship between bread and weight gain. What they found was interesting and slightly goes against Tomlinson’s claim that there’s no difference white or brown bread.
“The results of the present review indicate that reducing white bread, but not whole-grain bread, consumption within a Mediterranean-style food pattern setting is associated with lower gains in weight and abdominal fat,” the study wrote. “It appears that the different composition between whole-grain bread and white bread varies in its effect on body weight and abdominal fat.”
What you can definitely take away from this though is the fact that it’s what we add to bread that affects our weight gain as opposed to just the bread itself. Keep the intake proportions balanced and your dieting journey might not need to be as painful as you think.

Whether you’re hoping to make the Olympics for the 100m or just enjoy a ‘run’ on the world-famous Bondi to Bronte track, you’ll likely need some running clothes and gear. In the words of Nike, “If you have a body, you are an athlete”; this has never been truer.
Every man and his selfie-stick are picking up a sport of some description and looking good is now a key aspect of this fitness revolution. Even if you aren’t going to be sprinting on one of the most intense running trails in the world, activewear can be great to wear around the house or out to a slightly hungover Sunday brunch. There is a reason why everyone is on the activewear train at the moment; it’s about time you step onboard.
First and foremost, activewear needs to be functional, but in this day and age, it needs to look as good as it performs. No matter how you like your exercise, it’s best to stand out for the right reasons so it’s time to throw out that ‘stringer’ singlet and invest in some proper running shorts, running tops and even running jackets… maybe even some killer running shoes.

Ok, you’re in the market for a white sneaker. After one Google Search, you’ll know what you want. Common Projects Achilles Low, we agree, they are simply the best white sneakers you can get and there are reasons why we and everyone else thinks this.
Firstly, their clean, minimalistic design means that they’ll not only look cool for years to come, but they also look fantastic with just about everything.
Secondly, their build quality is second to none. They’re made in Italy from a combination of calf and smooth leather with a margom sole, all these are simply the finest in their fields. In combination, this is what has given the Common Projects their cult status.
So whats the problems with these clearly, fantastic sneakers I hear you ask? Well. They cost $459.
The alternative? Buy these, the Oliver Cabell Low 1
Whilst they are not Common Projects, they are very similar. They’re handmade in Italy from a selection of Italian leathers and similar soles. So the quality is up there with the US’s, but what about the design? Even with 20/20 vision you’d be hard pressed to spot the difference.
The best part? They cost half as much at about US$178 / $240 AUD.
But they’re still not Common Projects? We really wouldn’t worry about this, the minute amount of people who are a part of the cult might turn their nose up at them, but everyone else is just going to appreciate them as a beautiful white sneaker. And for you? You’ll have saved yourself $250, it doesn’t get much better than that.
How’s the sizing you ask? We found we’re half a size down from our US shoe size. So if you’re an 11.5 in Nike, then you would be a 11 in Oliver Cabell.

Unless you’re Usain Bolt, buying $120 gym shorts is not financially astute. But when you’ve been wearing the same flaccid ball-huggers since high school and the drawstring finally gives in, it’s time to browse for something a little more swish.
Up until now, when I needed new shorts I’d peek in the nearest bargain bin, which (clearly) explains my growing pile of worn out waistbands better than my burgeoning dad-bod. But all cheap things must come to an end, and this time I was determined to ‘up’ my gym style—for journalism.
In other words: I figured that if I couldn’t improve my running-style organically, I could at least look cool(er) while doing it. So, in a decision that had my former, thrift-shopping-self spinning hemp in his grave, I bought a $120 dollar pair of Nike gym shorts.
Here’s what I discovered.
‘Two In One’ Shorts Are Really A Thing
You know how road bike shorts come with an internal ‘shammy’? Well, the ‘in-trend’ Nike gym shorts I bought have an internal, light-fabric short that sits on your skin, and a more ‘normal’ short that hangs a bit looser, over the top (see pic above).
They Are Great For ‘In-Between’ Weather
When it’s cold enough to make you question leaving the house, but not cold enough to warrant a pair of compression clothing like Skins, Nike’s ‘two in one’ running shorts fill the void.
They Are A Bit Over The Top For A Light Workout
Their versatility in Spring and Autumn notwithstanding, donning a pair of fancy ‘two in one’ pants for a brief upper body workout does seem like overkill.
You May Develop A Case Of ‘Claustrophobic Crotch’
If your gym’s fan or air-con stops working, or you manage a particularly intense sweat-sesh, these shorts kind of make you want to sit in a bath full of ice.
They Make You Run Faster
Whether you’re injured, tired or going uphill, waddling along at a lowly pace somehow feels unacceptable in these bad boys. While it’s all well and good to put on a burst of speed to impress your commuter crush, the pressure to perform in these ‘two in one’ shorts is almost as bad as being on a much-awaited first date.
They Won’t Promote Blood Circulation As Well As Skins
The Starks have been saying it for yonks and I’ll say it again: winter is coming. And when the icy weather hits we’d recommend skins under normal shorts for running, and this ‘two in one’ offering for the gym (where the temperature should be kept at a reasonable level for you).
The $120 Version Has Better Storage Options Than The $55 Version
There is also a $55 dollar version of these luxe shorts, whose performance (in terms of mobility, comfort and heat) was more or less, from my point of view, identical. However, I found the storage options of the $120 version far more convenient for storing my gym pass, keys and extensive selection of artisanal coffee and baked goods loyalty cards.
They Aren’t As Un-Economical As You Think
Although I would need to continue this experiment for a few more years to hold a definitive answer to this question, the suspicious lack of loose threads (or looseness in general) of both pairs of ‘two in one’ shorts I acquired, even after accidentally putting them both in the tumble dryer, means I hope to make (some of) my money back in the long run.
