Hedonists have always known it and now the men in white coats are catching up: free will is an illusion. Willpower is not a dirty word: it’s nonsensical. The world is a hellish playground of cinnamon donuts, fried-chicken and Snapchat selfies. And although buddhists council a cautious dipping of one’s double-fried fries into life’s aioli, the truth is: controlling your thoughts is more futile than you’d think.
Thanks to a new San Francisco State University study, we now know more about how thoughts enter our consciousness. The study tested the difference between “actively deciding” to think about something, and learned activities like counting (known by psychologists as “sets”), which can enter our subconscious and cause us to think about something else, whether or not we want to. The study set out to examine how these “sets” (unconscious activities) influence what we think about.
In the first experiment, 35 students were told not to count a variety of objects presented to them. Despite the instruction, in 90 percent of the tests, students counted the objects involuntarily. In the second experiment, students were presented with different coloured geometric shapes and given the option of either naming the colours (one set) or counting the shapes (a different set). Even though students were supposed to chose one over the other, around 40 percent couldn’t help but think about both.
“The data support the view that, when one is performing a desired action, conscious thoughts about alternative plans still occupy the mind, often insuppressibly,” said Ezequiel Morsella, one of the four authors of the study.
“We think of our conscious minds as private and insulated from the outside world,” said Morsella. Yet, as reported by Science Daily, “Our ‘insulation’ may be more permeable than we think… (As) the new study demonstrates that it’s actually quite easy to activate ‘sets’ in people and influence what occupies the brain’s prime real estate.”
“The research shows that stimuli in the environment are very important in determining what we end up thinking about and that once an action plan is strongly activated its many effects can be difficult to override,” Morsella.
This gives weight to Morsella’s “passive frame” theory, which argues most thoughts enter our brains as a result of subliminal processes we don’t totally control.
I just remembered that last I had a VIVID dream in which I was explaining to someone all the reasons why Krispy Kreme donuts are inferior and what qualities make for a great donut. Anyway, what is YOUR subconscious mind thinking about while you sleep?

The conclusion? If one embarrassing encounter summons a highlight reel of the most awkward things you’ve ever done, don’t lie awake counting sheep to stop it—go with it. Play out your hero fantasy. Watch Love Island. Saturate yourself with whatever tickles your cortex.

Except for when you toss a juicy rasher of bacon, pigs don’t fly. Unfortunately for aesthetically conscious travellers, the same can’t be said for planes that look like whales. And you can cite large fries, double d’s, elastic-waisted sweatpants and wide-screen plasma’s until you’re blue in the face: big isn’t always better.
This is the unfortunate reality Airbus forgot when designing the Beluga XL aircraft, nicknamed the “whale in the sky”, which took off from Toulouse Airport in France yesterday for its maiden flight. Despite the applause of the 10,000 people (mostly Airbus employees and subcontractors) there to watch, the Twitterverse has not reacted kindly to the plane’s whale-like shape, which the European airline have tried to embrace by painting a mouth and eyes on the side of the nose.

Words can’t describe how ugly the Airbus Beluga really is.

— Wais (@WaisBashir) January 18, 2014
As reported by News.com, “The plane has been designed to move oversized aircraft components and has an extra 30 per cent capacity on the current Beluga planes that it will replace.” This means the plane is six metres longer and a metre wider than its predeccessor, enabling it to carry two A350 XWB plane wings instead of one.

The plane, which weighs 125 tonnes, “Can also carry up to 53 tonnes in the hold for a distance of more than 4,000 kilometres” (News.com). To power it, there are two expertly designed Rolls-Royce Trent 700 Turbofan engines, both with a thrust of 316 kN.

According to News.com, “The Beluga XL program was launched in November 2014, with this oversized transporter to be used for carrying complete sections of Airbus aircraft from different production sites around Europe to the final assembly lines in Toulouse, France and Hamburg, Germany.”

If their pun-filled tweets are anything to go by, Airbus couldn’t give two planktons about the criticism of the new design—and are having fun. So much so, in fact, that they plan to introduce five more aquatic beasts to the sky in the future.

Today sees the official arrival of one of the most anticipated Rolls-Royce cars ever on Australian shores. The Cullinan is the luxury British marque’s first SUV which brings the pinnacle of artisan car making to the wildly popular segment.
And whilst the Cullinan will cost local buyers AU$685,000 drive-away, the car does come with its own secret booze box slotted between the rear seats. Is it worth over half a million? It is if that’s the kind of lifestyle you’re keen on leading.
Elsewhere the Cullinan is all brute force and bespoke glory. Here’s what the options list looks like:
- 32 exterior paints (minimum)
- 18 interior leather colour options
- 8 veneers
- 9 carpet colours
The feature that grabbed our attention the most however was the fixed rear centre console. This unit incorporates a drinks cabinet along with Rolls-Royce whisky glasses, a decanter, champagne flutes and a refrigerator. A perfect example of business up front, party out back.
The Cullinan comes with a host of other luxury appointments but what you needs to know is that it’s a capable SUV which can go off-road, but probably won’t for most of its life.
The brand’s ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ ensures a smooth road ride whatever the normal conditions are but should you desire to take it off the beaten track, there’s electronically-controlled air shocks to help maintain maximum traction.
Powering the Cullinan is a big 6.75-litre V12 capable of delivering 420kW of power and 850Nm of torque. Mileage meanwhile is pegged at 15L/100km – not bad considering the car weighs 2,660kg.

Conventional wisdom on fertility tends to focus on a well balanced exercise routine, kale-shakes and early nights. Some research has even suggested that a child’s intelligence can be positively (or negatively) affected by the father’s fitness level. Which is great; but no fun. Now though, all you budding progenitors have an excuse to lift the flap on a beer or seven two.
Why? In a recent study, moderate alcohol intake was linked with higher semen volume, sperm concentration, and total sperm count. As reported by Science Daily, “In the study of 323 men patients, 9.6% were abstainers, 30.0% drank less than 1-3, 30.3% drank 4-7, and 30.0% drank more than 8 alcohol units per week. (1 unit = 125 mL wine or 330 mL beer or 30 mL spirits, all containing approximately 12.5 g of ethanol).”
“Compared with men drinking less than 1-3 units per week, median semen volume was higher in the 4-7 units/week group, as was total sperm count. Association with sperm concentration was also significant, with a U-shaped trend in groups of alcohol intake,” they added.
“Since the dose makes the poison, they are counselled to limit but not avoid alcohol,” said Dr. Elena Ricci, lead author.
Regarding low sperm counts, the findings were consistent with other research. In Italy, where the research took place, alcohol consumption is common but usually limited to small quantities, and, “This applies in particular to men referring to our Infertility Clinic,” said lead author Dr. Elena Ricci, of the Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico.
So if you are planning on extending your brood, don’t lay off the tins—but don’t lay into them either… Go European style, compose yourself, repeat after me; moderation is not a dirty word.

Evacuate the city. Engage all defences. And get this man…a stain remover. Chadwick Boseman broke all convention today as he headed to the 2018 ESPYS Awards in a stark white suit by Louis Vuitton complete with a waistcoat – worn on the outside.
That’s a lot to take in when it comes to men’s fashion rules but Boseman seemingly pulls it off without a hitch (probably because he’s the King of Wakanda and can wear whatever he damn wishes). Nonetheless we rate it and one can’t deny the Black Panther actor for being original with his wardrobe.
RELATED: Chadwick Boseman Will Steal Your Wife With His Red Carpet Wardrobe
Boseman gets the look over the line with white garments from Louis Vuitton’s latest collection by Virgil Abloh which feature a nice degree of tonal contrasts. A look at the gallery will reveal that the blazer and trousers are a creamier shade of white whilst the crew neck tee is another as is the waistcoat which features unique detailing like crocodile skin and a matching white zipper.
Even Boseman’s white sneakers feature its own tonal white which leads us to the solution for wearing all-white: Make sure there’s contrast and detailing between the white pieces so that you’ll avoid looking like a creepy uncle at a white party.
Don’t be that guy. Be this guy.

In the Post Truth Era a scrap of gossip as juicy as Obama joining the Intellectual Dark Web could easily be dismissed as hearsay. However, unless Twitter has climbed aboard the fake news bandwagon, Obama is currently the unwitting poster child of “Dark Webbers” everywhere.
But first, for those that have been frozen in carbonite for the last 12 months; what is the Intellectual Dark Web? Basically, it’s a bunch of Professors In Exile and free-thinking academics, who aim, “To foster a new discourse that can allow innovative thinkers to wrestle with the world’s problems without having to tiptoe around subjects or questions deemed culturally or politically off-limits” (LA Times).
Because of the large numbers of disaffected young men they attract, the controversial topics they cover, and the extreme (and, at times, absurd) views of the people they sometimes debate, the Intellectual Dark Web is often characterised as a racist, misogynistic movement more likely to produce xenophobic incels than open minded citizens of the world. But the leaders themselves are smart, if a little contrarian and smug for many people’s liking.
So how did Obama get caught up in it all? Yesterday he gave a speech in South Africa, to mark 100 years since Nelson Mandela’s birth, in which he appeared to sympathise with elements of the Intellectual Dark Web’s fight against identity politics.
Pres. Obama: Democracy demands getting inside “the reality of people who are different than us.”
“You can’t do it if you insist that those who aren’t like you because they’re white, or because they’re male…that somehow they lack standing to speak on certain matters.” pic.twitter.com/NHPR9cQmpQ
— ABC News (@ABC) 17 July 2018
This was heard by members of the so-called Dark Web, like Dave Rubin, host of The Rubin Report, who were quick to extend an invitation to the most unlikely potential recruit you could imagine (the Dark Web have long been critical of Obama for his role he played in enforcing the “gated institutional narrative” while in office).
Welcome to the Intellectual Dark Web, @BarackObama… https://t.co/gG6qE57T5g
— Dave Rubin (@RubinReport) 17 July 2018
As the NYT points out, in their eagerness to reach a larger audience, members of the Intellectual Dark Web have previously aligned themselves with all sorts of people. “Go a click in one direction and the group is enhanced by intellectuals with tony affiliations like Steven Pinker at Harvard. But go a click in another and you’ll find alt-right figures like Stefan Molyneux and Milo Yiannopoulos and conspiracy theorists like Mike Cernovich (the #PizzaGate huckster) and Alex Jones (the Sandy Hook shooting denier).”
In light of this, Obama would be a welcome addition. Unfortunately for #webbers, the invitation may have been tongue in cheek—and he is yet to respond.

In case you’ve been living under a pile of refined sugar, the Ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low carb movement, taking people rich and bored enough to care about “macros” by storm. To the chagrin of some medical professionals (most notably Dr Tony Bartone, president of the Australian Medical Association) and the applause of others, the Keto diet has gained momentum, spruiked by celebrity chef Pete Evans and undisputed King of basketball Lebron James.
With every day that passes, what used to be a treatment for epilepsy and autoimmune disease is becoming a focal point for weight loss and #health routines. Advocates take to the streets with Vegan-esque fervour. Documentaries making radical claims hit the Flix. And suddenly your friends are judging you for eating toast for breakfast.
To those of us who prefer to remain wilfully ignorant of our diets of coffee and carbs, archaeology science recently struck a rare blow in our favour: apparently Copper Age humans didn’t like Keto acolytes either. Although the Iceman probably didn’t refer to his diet, which scientists discovered last week to be “remarkably high fat,” as Keto—that’s pretty much exactly definitely what it was.
As reported by Science Daily, “In 1991, German tourists discovered a human body that was later determined to be the oldest naturally preserved ice mummy, known as Ötzi or the Iceman. Now, researchers who have conducted the first in-depth analysis of the Iceman’s stomach contents offer a rare glimpse of our ancestor’s ancient dietary habits.”
“By using a complementary multi-omics approach combined with microscopy, we reconstructed the Iceman’s last meal, showing that he has had a remarkably high proportion of fat in his diet, supplemented with wild meat from ibex and red deer, cereals from einkorn, and with traces of toxic bracken.”
While the high-fat diet was unexpected, the researchers said that given the extreme alpine environment in which the Iceman lived, it makes sense.
“The high and cold environment is particularly challenging for the human physiology and requires optimal nutrient supply to avoid rapid starvation and energy loss,” said Albert Zink, one of the researchers. “The Iceman seemed to have been fully aware that fat represents an excellent energy source.”
While this could be construed as advantage Keto, the Iceman’s cause of death must first be considered. “The cause of death is most likely due to an arrow that hit him in the left shoulder blade and caused massive bleeding,” says Chief Inspector Alexander Horn of the Munich Criminal Investigation Department (PRI).
“One or two days before the murder, there was a fight. Ötzi was part of that fight and he managed to defend himself, grabbing a sharp object like a knife. He had a massive injury to the right hand.”
While many people cite the short lifespan of our Palaeolithic (in this case, Copper Age) ancestors as proof the diet can’t have been that good for you, that’s low hanging fruit. No, we reckon the fact that old mate Ötzi was murdered is proof that embracing the Keto diet is a risky business for a whole ‘nother reason: social isolation.
Although your 21st century friends are (hopefully) unlikely to kill you, telling them to forego baguettes, croissants, donuts, pizza, pasta, garlic bread etc. in the name of Keto is a sure-fire way to ensure your next euro vacay is solo—and not by choice.
