Why American Nutritionists Don’t Understand Their Own Country
Why American Nutritionists Don’t Understand Their Own Country

The science of nutrition is ever-evolving and what’s de rigueur one day is a sin the next. It’s incredibly challenging trying to construct a diet that suits your particular needs and circumstances, even without considering the semiotics of what you’re eating.

Yet the world of nutrition – and the nutrition coaches that help define it in popular culture – is deeply political. Dissident Chinese artist and political commentator Ai Weiwei famously said that “everything is art [and] everything is politics,” and nutrition is no exception.

Max Lugavere, an American nutrition coach who’s insights we’ve discussed previously on numerous occasions here at DMARGE, recently invited controversial conservative commentator Dave Rubin on his podcast The Genius Life.

Whether he’s controversial because, as Rubin claims, America has become too sensitive, or whether he’s simply a flog we’ll leave up to your judgement (check out his show here).

But today’s topic is food – and whether it has become politicised.

Lugavere discussed how sometimes, when nutrition coaches like himself promote certain diets or foods – like eating organic, artisanal bread, grass-fed beef, etc. – they’re ‘called out’ by people who claim promoting them is discriminatory because some can’t afford to buy them.

Rubin, a self-styled ‘defender of free speech’, says that Lugavere’s situation is another example of political correctness gone mad. Though we find Rubin somewhat insufferable, on this point, we agree; nutrition coaches clearly shouldn’t bullied out of spitting facts.

However, there is a bigger issue at play here; the idea that Instagram icons like Max (an ex-journalist) have more sway than mainstream nutritionists and GPs.

Science ain’t sexy.

Fortunately, some icons, like Max (and Amando Rocchio), are adept at both grabbing people’s attention while also keeping shit real. However, on the other end of the spectrum, there are nutrition gurus who, like Max, have the gift of the gab, but don’t have the qualifications or integrity to give people the right information.

This can be dangerous especially – as we reported last year – as having the facts in your court is not always as persuasive as having an attractive cultural movement to anchor your diet to (which is also the reason many people listen to low carb gurus instead of science).

After all, people are more likely to make a lifestyle change if they have an emotional why attached, more so than because a nutrition coach in their Instagram Tower said that their weekly stash of white bread is a few macros short of a dozen.

As we wrote last year: “Just as you have to Marie Kondo your house to really keep it clean you have to jump on board a ‘movement’ if you want cheese-grater abs.”

“Problem is, this has led many to believe that the entire food pyramid is a lie, when the truth is, the reason people tend to see more success on low carb regimes is because they religiously stick to them (rather than half-heartedly trying to eat a bit less junk and a few more veggies, as tends to be the case with people on the mainstream nutrition science diet).”

Max clearly recognises this, having posted numerous graphics detailing how to eat healthily on a budget (and thus connecting with his audience on a financial as well as health level).

Checking my biases here for all my peeps trying to save money or living in food desserts: any type of unprocessed meat or fish is still better for you then most of the packaged refined grain foods lining supermarket shelves! ☀ . There’s no doubt that 100% grass-fed beef is healthier, and a way kinder solution for the environment and animals themselves. In fact, it’s all I bring into my house. But not everyone has access or can afford high quality meat all the time. . In a perfect world, we would all have access to the best meat with minimal animal suffering and footprint on the environment. But the world especially right now is far from perfect. And that’s important to acknowledge. . So that’s why I wanted to let you know that even regular beef is still a great source of protein and creatine with minimal junk calories from refined grains. It’s safe for people with blood sugar issues. It’s full of important and highly bioavailable minerals like iron and zinc. Plus, leaner grain-fed beef is basically equivalent to grass-fed beef anyway since what a cow eats mostly dictates what’s in its fat! If you’re in a pinch, it can be a great option. . Personally, I’d take grain-fed beef or grilled farmed salmon and a salad over a pizza, bowl of pasta, or pre-made burrito any day! And often when I’m traveling (oh how I miss those days) that’s often what I’ll end up doing. . Hope this helps fam. Tag 3 friends to spread the message! As Max points out, there are definitely ways to eat nutritionally and ethically superior foods without breaking the bank, and it would be just as intellectually dishonest if nutrition coaches started to give intentionally inaccurate health advice in order to avoid potentially offending anyone.

As an aside: Lugavere is by no means the first American nutrition coach to go on a free speech bent. Some nutrition coaches in the US have rebutted with ‘free speech’ when they’ve faced accusations of spreading misleading nutrition advice.

For example, a nutrition coach in Florida even invoked the First Amendment as a legal defence when she was fined by state authorities for practicing without a license, Ars Technica reported.

A US federal court rejected Heather Del Castillo’s claims that the unqualified nutrition advice she provided to paying clients was protected speech under the First Amendment.

Though she’s not American, Instagram influencer Sophia Partik proved the absurd endpoint of this phenomenon, claiming to her 20k followers she didn’t drink water for a year and got healthier doing so, numerous publications have reported.

Obviously, there’s a big difference between hiding behind ‘free speech’ to continue committing fraudulent business activities and spreading misinformation and using ‘free speech’ to justify why you should be able to talk about organic food without being shouted down as offensive (a la Lugavere).

We actually agree with Lugavere inasmuch as it would be more patronising; more prejudiced to give intentionally inaccurate nutrition advice. What should he do, lie to people? But on the other hand: perhaps whinging about such a niche complaint isn’t useful right now, considering what’s happening in US at the moment.

It appears Lugavere may have sensed this (or simply, reacted to the upheaval in a positive way) as, since hosting Rubin (and, predictably, receiving criticism), he has posted a bunch of ‘how to eat well on a budget’ type posts, as well as highlighting a number of organisations supporting stronger black food systems.

COVID Testing Station ‘Gym Conversion’ Proves How Seriously Sydney Is Taking The Virus
COVID Testing Station ‘Gym Conversion’ Proves How Seriously Sydney Is Taking The Virus

Sydney – but especially Bondi – gets a tough wrap. Between making international news for defying distancing rules (to sunbathe, no less) and making headlines for selling houses at boom prices while much of the rest of the country’s market declined, it’s easy to be jealous of the Eastern Suburbs residents’ easy-going lives.

But despite the scrutiny around their every action, Bondi locals appear unphased about being called out by the press, and have continued to display their trademark joie de vivre.

Case in point: this morning’s usage of a COVID testing station to do personal training.

In the clip, taken this morning by DMARGE, two women can be seen doing single-leg bridges under the watchful eye of a personal trainer, sheltering from the rain in a COVID testing station.

There is also a security guard sitting on his phone, at the back, either oblivious or kindly allowing the Activewear Brigade to continue exercising out of the rain.

The video was taken around 7:40am, and DMARGE understands the testing booth is open from 9am to 4pm daily.

Rule breaking or not: it doesn’t get much more Bondi than this.

Some Madman Tried Suing Apple For Its Entire Net Worth
Some Madman Tried Suing Apple For Its Entire Net Worth

America is no stranger to ridiculous court cases. Take the kidnapper who sued his hostages for failing to help him evade the cops. Or the DC judge who sued a dry cleaner’s for $67 million for giving him the wrong set of trousers.

They’ve got nothing on this mad lad who just tried (and, sadly, failed) to sue Apple for over $1 trillion – more than Apple’s net worth. If he was successful, he would have become the richest man on earth, ahead of Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates.

In a court filing on June 1, Missouri man Raevon Terrell Parker alleged that in 2018 Apple kept his iPhone 7 after a repair, and used “special features” on his phone to develop features in iOS, Apple Insider recently reported.

Parker claimed that his iPhone had a special beta version of iOS on it that gave him extra functionality, and when Apple finished the repair, they actually gave him a different phone with a normal operating system, and kept his ‘special’ phone.

It’s not the first time he’s tried suing Apple over this 2018 incident. He also filed an almost identical lawsuit against Apple in 2019, with these absolutely ridiculous demanded damages:

Can I sue Parker for damaging my mentality with these ridiculous asks? Image: Apple Insider

Where did this guy learn how to negotiate? This is how we imagine it went down:

“2 trillion. Okay, 1 trillion. Wait, half a trillion. Fine, just some AirPods? That’s my final offer…”

Parker’s a lunatic but he’s got nothing on Mr. Anthony Purisima, who in 2014 tried suing the City of New York for $2 undecillion. That’s $2,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 (36 zeroes if you lost count), or more money that exists on Planet Earth.

And we thought Macbooks were expensive.

Queensland Home’s Secret Lair Is Every Skateboarder’s Wet Dream
Queensland Home’s Secret Lair Is Every Skateboarder’s Wet Dream

A slick, stylish and outright cool man pad is high on the list of wants for any modern gent, whether it be somewhere to live his best bachelor lifestyle, or a home that provides everything and more for a family. Australia isn’t short of incredibly well-designed homes that are architectural masterpieces or have games rooms and cinemas at every turn.

But we reckon there aren’t many other homes that can lay claim to having a fully functioning concrete skate bowl on the ground floor. That’s right, not even outside in the yard, but inside the actual god damn house.

That’s exactly what’s being offered by this home at 32 Joynt Street, Hamilton, Queensland, which is currently up for auction via Place property agents. Unassuming from the front (you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a single-storey bungalow), 32 Joynt Place is, in fact, a three-storey mega home that appears to offer everything needed for comfortable family living.

Walking through the front door leads you into the expansive lounge room, which itself leads on to an open-plan kitchen diner, the master bedroom complete with ensuite, and a wraparound verandah which lends itself to some entertaining space at the rear, which looks out to backyard below.

Heading down to the middle level gives way to four more bedrooms, two bathrooms, a laundry room and rumpus room. If you’re already thinking this floor sounds like the ideal place to leave the kids level while adults gossip over wine and cheese on the upper floor verandah, you’ll be keen to learn the middle floor also has a giant concrete slab to provide sound isolation to the rest of the house.

But it’s the ground floor level that provides the magic of this home. Designed by local Brisbane architect Joe Adsett, not only will you find another guest bedroom with its own bathroom and kitchenette (hello angsty teenager accommodation) but it’s where you’ll find a huge 8.9m x 11.7m concrete skate bowl, allowing you to channel your inner Tony Hawk.

However, if skateboarding isn’t your bag, you can show off your chef skills with yet another kitchenette area. You’ll also find a decent-sized swimming pool (heated via solar power, naturally) and large grassed yard.

We’re not sure if the current owners had the skate bowl installed of it’s been there for many years, but it’s certainly a unique feature, although we admit it could have a drastic effect on the number of potential buyers.

Regardless, what else could you want from a home? If your answer to that is a living room plunge pool, then this house in Clovelly, Sydney may be more up your street, but if not, 32 Joynt Street could be your next dream home.

Check out the video below for a full video walkthrough of the home, along with a gallery of images.

The Cultural Sign A Suburb Has Reached Peak Value, According To Real Estate Experts
The Cultural Sign A Suburb Has Reached Peak Value, According To Real Estate Experts

Whether it’s Yoga Yuppies tiptoeing around sidewalk drunks or students hawking Che Guevara tees you might think you know all the signs of a gentrifying area.

But what lets you know a suburb has reached, or is about to reach, ‘peak value’? While your tastebuds might tell you there’s no such thing as too many Sonoma bakeries, your wallet might tell a different story.

And as Australia’s market goes through more uncertain times than the Melbourne weather, there’s more reason to be a smarter buyer than ever.

As the ABC reported last year, “the tide is turning on Australia’s $7.6-trillion property market.”

When the ABC wrote that, home prices in more than four out of five council areas had reached their peak and begun sliding towards an “unknown nadir.”

UBS chief economist also told the ABC, “It seems quite plausible to me that house prices will continue to fall for all of the next year into 2020.”

That was said before coronavirus smashed into Australia (or, at least, its economy).

Now the situation is even worse and – though certain wealthy areas appear to be retaining their value – we are heading for an economic downturn.

This makes it crucial – now more than ever – to make smart decisions with your hip pocket, even as you take advantage of the opportunities cropping up in the Australian housing market.

So: how do you tell a suburb has been gentrified to the point where it will increase in value no further? The cold hard truth, according to leading Eastern Suburbs real estate agent Gavin Rubinstein, is that “there is no real indicator of a suburb reaching its peak.”

What you can do, however, is “look for suburbs that represent good value when the market dips or flattens,” Rubinstein told DMARGE exclusively.

“It is more a case of picking a slower growth cycle as a better time to buy.”

We then asked him: ‘once somewhere has a Sonoma bakery, is it too late to buy (and think it will keep getting more valuable)?’. While Rubinstein told us it’s impossible to know for sure when an area has reached peak value (patisseries are evidently a flakey yardstick), he agreed that getting your head around a place’s culture and geography is crucial to a smart purchase.

“Location location location – this fundamental of real estate never changes.”

The property experts over at Open Agent back this tasty insight up, while adding a few more cultural factors into the mix, in their article, “How do you know if a suburb is booming? It comes down to these 5 indicators.”

Have at ’em.
  • Property values
  • Days on market
  • Rental yields
  • Clearance rate
  • Vacancy rates
  • Sellers going the auction route, rather than listing for sale
  • Major infrastructure projects in the works
  • Uptick in renovation activity, shops, cafes and local businesses (e.g. that bakery you’re so addicted to)

Sergio Ramos’ Epic Iso Beard Suggests ‘Cast Away’ Reboot Is In The Works
Sergio Ramos’ Epic Iso Beard Suggests ‘Cast Away’ Reboot Is In The Works

Sergio Ramos, Real Madrid and Spanish national football team captain, never does things by halves. Known as ‘the ballsiest player in the world’, the aggressive Andalusian – who holds the inglorious title of most carded player in La Liga history – has debuted a wild new lockdown look that’s got tongues wagging.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CBL3hP_hR5D/

Jeez, he’s hardly recognisable! Should Ramos be sent off for this one, or is a winning look?

We reckon this beach scene, combined with this scraggly beard, reminds us a bit too much of Tom Hanks in the 2000 blockbuster Cast Away. Just give Ramos a soccer ball instead of a volleyball.

Quarantine beards have become a worldwide phenomenon. As social distancing has been enforced in most nations, many men have taken the opportunity presented by lockdown to grow out their manes – celebrities included.

Chris Hemsworth, Jamie Foxx, Ricky Martin… Even other footballers have gone in on the trend, like Ramos’ mate David Beckham, seen below reading Harry Potter with Scottish actor David Tennant as part of the Harry Potter At Home coronavirus project.

Ramos has just been offered a one-year contract extension with Madrid, according to Diario AS. Fingers crossed he has a little bit of a trim before he gets back on the pitch. They might be called Los Vikingos but that doesn’t mean you need to look like a Viking, Sergio.

This $75 Footjoy Glove Is A Must-Have For The Luxury-Loving Golfer
This $75 Footjoy Glove Is A Must-Have For The Luxury-Loving Golfer

Any golfer worth his fairway green salt should know that one of the best accessories to help improve their game isn’t a well-versed caddy, but a golf glove. A glove not only allows you to channel your inner Michael Jackson when teeing off but provides a bucketload of extra grip to ensure your club doesn’t slip from your palms, sending your ball flying into the trees or for a swim in the water.

For the serious golfer (or just the one who likes the finer things in life) this Footjoy leather glove is the must-have hand-snuggler. Not only does its vanilla colourway exude minimalist luxury, with perforations along the fingers to allow air to gently caress them, keeping it cool and sweat-free.

And that’s all before we even get to the APL Tanned leather sourced from Pittards of England (which has been producing fine leather goods since 1826) which is super-soft and will wrap your hand (left and right options are available) in such extreme comfort you’ll never want to take it off.

At $75 it’s comfortably in the luxury camp but is without doubt the perfect accompaniment to your golfing outfit, which, being a DMARGE reader, we imagine is already super stylish (you can always check here to make sure), and while you’re at it, why not go all out and add Hublot’s golfing watch into the mix too.

Study Reveals Dating This Way Puts You At A Massive Psychological Advantage
Study Reveals Dating This Way Puts You At A Massive Psychological Advantage

They say the key to dating success is playing things cool and not getting overly invested right from the get-go. Sadly, I’m a hopeless romantic who’s far more likely to write a love sonnet than try and ghost someone. But that’s bad news for me, apparently.

Researchers from the University of Rochester in upstate New York and the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya in Israel have collaborated on a recent study that reveals that the age-old dating strategy of ‘playing hard to get’ actually has tangible results.

“Playing hard to get makes it seem as if you are more in demand,” says Professor Harry Reis from the University of Rochester, one of the architects of the study. When you’re perceived to be a more valuable dating partner, you’re more likely to have dating success.

“We all want to date people with [a] higher ‘mate value’. We’re trying to make the best deal we can.”

“People who are too easy to attract may be perceived as more desperate,” co-author Associate Professor Gurit Birnbaum reinforces. Coming off as too desperate could sink your chances.

However, don’t overdo it with the whole ‘playing hard to get’ thing. Nothing’s sexier than someone who’s actually interested in you. Birnbaum and Reis have also written another study that found “when people feel greater certainty that a prospective romantic partner reciprocates their interest, they will put more effort into seeing that person again.”

Moreover, “[people] will even rate [a] possible date as more sexually attractive than they would if they were less certain about the prospective date’s romantic intentions.”

RELATED: Study Suggests A Relationship’s Expiry Date Is Set The First Time You Have Sex

So… What’s the right move? Should I play hard to get or not? Well, maybe just a little. Confidence, patience and actually being interesting go a long way in making sure you get that second date. Showing a bit of restraint and not laying all your cards on the table on day dot isn’t a bad idea, but you can’t be so reserved and opaque that you don’t seem disinterested.

“People are less likely to desire what they already have,” Birnbaum explains. “Instead, build a connection with a potential partner gradually [to create] a sense of anticipation and a desire to learn more about the other person.”

TAG Heuer’s New Connected Golf Smartwatch Promises To Take Strokes Off Your Game
TAG Heuer’s New Connected Golf Smartwatch Promises To Take Strokes Off Your Game

Think TAG Heuer and associations with sports will likely come to the fore. The Swiss watch brand has long been connected with Formula 1 and is the official timekeeper of the English Premier League, but it also has its hour hands in the world of golf.

It’s with that in mind that TAG Heuer has launched a new and improved version of its Connected Golf Edition smartwatch, which is targeted at fairways, water hazards and bunkers all over the world. This latest Golf Edition is based upon the third generation of TAG’s Connected smartwatch and has been designed and developed entirely in-house (clearly TAG’s bigwigs see themselves as the next Tiger Woods).

We’re already big fans of the Connected watch, seeing it as one of the, if not the, best example of a digital device in the luxury watch space, and this latest model (on paper at least) continues that trend. Rocking an ultra-lightweight 45mm black titanium case (so it won’t weigh you down when you’re hitting a 200-yard screamer) with 18 engraved and lacquered gradations around the bezel, which marry up with markers on the digital face to provide a quick-look insight relating to your performance at each hole.

A choice of black or white straps, and a range of digital faces.

– Two physical pushers on either side of the crown can be used to record shots and shot distance for each hole, in a similar fashion to Hublot’s dedicated golf watch, however, unlike Hublot’s mechanical workings, data on the TAG is recorded within the companion TAG Heuer Golf app.

The app, by the way, is available for iOS and Android and has data for pretty much any golf course around the world you can think of. It serves up precise 3D mapping so you can work out where you want to hit your ball, and a new Driving Zone feature will show you where’s best based on your personal previous rounds.

Your shot-spanking new Connected Golf Edition comes attached on a white rubber strap with green stitching (no prizes for guessing why those colours were chosen) and an interchangeable black rubber strap for when you’re not tearing up the green. You’re also able to select from any of five mechanical or digital-inspired always-on watch faces, which take advantage of the OLED screen technology to always display the time, but will only spring into action when you raise your wrist or press a button.

TAG also supplies the watch with four branded tees, a branded divot tool, three branded golf balls and a white leather travel pouch.

Of course, being based on the TAG Heuer Connected means this Golf Edition isn’t reserved solely for golfing uses. It has access to the full suite of Wear OS apps so you can easily use it for any other sporting discipline.

With the watch now sorted, all you need to do is stock up on the coolest golf clothing and bags and you’ll be the talk of the tee.
