You’re a little bit savvy you can not only jump the queue but make a saving by looking for a pre-owned model. What’s wrong with pre-owned? Absolutely nothing. They’re checked, serviced and offer great value for a watch that’s maybe 5-10 years old.
You can score a great deal on a pre-owned Rolex Submariner thanks to the Columbus Day Sale. Save a whopping $500 on this lovely Rolex Submariner (Ref: 16610) with black dial and date on the Rolex Oyster Steel bracelet. Its 40mm diameter means it will look great on almost any wrist but more importantly, you can own a slice of history.
Note: This watch doesn’t come with box and papers but if you have no plans to sell it, then who cares. Perhaps give it to your kids one day instead.

The luxury world is known for glacial perfection, not trailblazing. Because of this, it is often criticised for tail drifting on the ~cool factor~ of the past rather than forging a new road into the future.
This year’s winner of Brand Finance’s Luxury & Premium 50 2019 report, however, calls this theory into question, with Porsche tearing up the table and landing – yet again – in the top spot, despite the fact that Louis Vuitton probably comes to mind when you think of the world’s largest luxury brand.
French fashion houses Cartier and Louis Vuitton slotted into second and third spots respectively, while Chanel edged up the rankings into fourth, Hermes landed in fifth and Gucci in sixth. Ferrari, Rolex, Coach and Dior then made up the rest of the top 10, coming in at seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th respectively.
Brand Finance’s research also showed Porsche had increased its brand value by an impressive 54 per cent (since 2018) to US$29.3 billion (AU$42.81 billion), prompting Brand Finance director Alex Haigh to say: “Connotations of luxury extend far beyond fashion brands with this becoming ever more apparent since Porsche yet again tops the Brand Finance Luxury & Premium 50 2019 ranking.”
“The combination of Porsche’s trusted and long-standing heritage, a commitment to diversification, innovation and after sales-services is what really sets the auto-titan apart from its competitors,” he added. Sales of their new Taycan can’t have hurt either.

The other main insight is that Cartier’s brand value has increased by 39 per cent, helping them knock last year’s second place getters (Louis Vuitton) from their silver-perch and into third.
As B&T reports, it’s probably not coincidental that Cartier’s newly renovated flagship London store opened its doors at the end of last year.
Three new entrants also made it into this year’s Brand Finance Luxury & Premium ranking: Montblanc, with a brand value of US$925 million (AU$1,351 million), Bobbi Brown, with a brand value of US$786 million (AU$1,148 million) and Fendi, with a brand value of US$573 million (AU$837 million).
As B&T reports, “The highest new entrant, Montblanc (38th position), launched the first luxury smartwatch, the Montblanc Summit, at the end of 2018, showcasing the brand’s commitment to digital innovation.”
So while the stalwarts are still at the top, innovation is well and truly on its way. Who said perfection and trailblazing were mutually exclusive?

From Sparticus’ corpus to Cristiano Ronaldo’s chiselled abs, there’s a reason six-packs have become known as ‘sex packs’.
But how to get one of your own?
There are already thousands of articles on the ‘myths’ you need to bust and the foods you need to eat to get top-notch abdominals. While there’s some value to this, much of it is overblown.
So rather than pretend abs are made in the kitchen (they may be revealed there, but it’s certainly not where you build them), today we’re going to give you a no-fuss guide to your physical cheese-grating.
Enter: Peter O’Reilly, a mobility specialist and online fitness and nutrition coach, who recently took to Instagram with a series of exercises designed to get you the perfect six-pack. No over promises, no short cuts; just honest activities that – if you keep at them – will have you looking like Brad Pitt in fight club.
Sweat is the secret.
View this post on Instagram
To work your Serratus Anterior (the muscles just under your pecs) Peter advises you do the pushup plus (essentially just a pushup but pushing your upper back towards the ceiling at the end), straight arm pulldowns and cable deltoid raises.
Bonus points if you add free weights to your push-ups too, a la Chris Hemsworth.
To work on your external obliques he recommends you do side bends, Russian twists, cable twists and elbow to knee tucks. On the flipside, the internal obliques can be boosted with planks, glute bridges and quadrupled lifts.
Moving on to the upper rectus abdominis (the upper abs, also known as the bit you always accidentally work when you are trying to work lower down), Peter says sit ups, crunches and ab wheel rollouts are all options.
As for the lower rectus abdominis (the lower abs), to target this area you can try hanging knee raises, mountain climbers, reverse crunches, scissors and lying leg raises.
His final words of advice aren’t too bad either, with Peter reminding you that to achieve the perfect six pack you need to be lifting weights, engaging in HIIT training and reducing your overall body fat percentage.

Drake will always be the guy who has all the talent but remains slightly awkward. Why? For some reason, he seems to try harder than the rest of them. That said, sometimes he wears some seriously cool bling – and today was one of those days.
Drake stepped out in Los Angeles this morning and – per usual – wasn’t shy when flashing his watch and jewellery. Of course, the combination of a gold Rolex and NBA Championship ring was too much for the waiting paparazzi.
Whilst Drake isn’t a Toronto Raptors player, he is their official mascot. Which means when they win, he wins.

The $150,000 ring is one of two the rapper was gifted by the Raptors. The oversized ring is said to be the biggest ever championship ring and contains over 30 carats of diamonds. It seems all the courtside hollering paid off for the Candian superstar.
Drake didn’t stop there. He was also wearing a classic 18-carat yellow-gold Rolex (ref:192500) above his Fear of God hoodie. Just for good measure, the diamond-encrusted Rolex Day-Date has a champagne (pappi) dial with a diamond bezel and diamond inset on the dial. It’s finished with the classic Rolex president bracelet, which everyone’s loving at the moment.
Want one? You can pick the same one up from Rolex for a cool A$80,000.

Dates and risqué humour go together like a blazer and a flamboyant cravat: sometimes excellently but more often catastrophic. Because of this, standard practice is to save the ‘Death At A Funeral’ rib-ticklers for at least date three.
You wouldn’t think you could go too wrong with this approach. However, as one unfortunate woman recently revealed to 9Honey, even so-called innocent jokes could get you into hot water (or end your date).
How so? This is how her story begins.
“I’d spent three weeks messaging and chatting with a guy I met on Tinder who I thought had a lot of potential. His name was Thomas [name changed for obvious reasons], and he was pretty good-looking and seemed really nice so I was keen to meet up,” the anonymous woman told 9Honey.
“We arranged to meet at a bar not far from my house in the western suburbs of Sydney. I turned up a bit earlier so I could get settled in and have a drink before he turned up.”
“I’d had two drinks by the time he turned up, but I wasn’t disappointed – he was very cute. I’d say he was definitely better looking in the flesh… He kissed me hello and told me I looked gorgeous, so I liked him right away. He was a very flirtatious man, in his late 30s and very tall.”
So far so promising.
“I wouldn’t say it was love at first sight, but I was deeply interested right away. Yet there was something he said that totally put me off and had me wishing I’d never met him at all.” Here’s where the risks of an innocent joke come to the fore.
According to our unlucky-in-love woman, the cocktail bar they were in wasn’t crowded, and there were more bar staff and waitresses hanging around than customers, which led Thomas to comment on one of the waitresses.
“One of the waitresses was very striking, tall and curvy with long black hair and green eyes.”
“Clearly, she was Thomas’ type,” our anonymous author added. “How do I know she was his type? Well, because he told me.”
“As she walked away, he said four words that made me want to pour his beer over his head: ‘I hope she’s single.'”
The woman then told Thomas he’d blown it. She was out of there.
“He tried to stop me and told me he was only joking about the waitress, but I’m not stupid. Even if he had been joking, it’s a pretty lame joke to make when you’re on a date.”
Of course, unless you were there in the flesh (and even then), it is impossible to know whether Thomas was really joking. But the fact remains that even though Thomas thought this joke was innocent – perhaps even flirtatious – it actually left him looking desperado.
While not all innocent jokes lead to such misunderstandings, you have been warned.

It’s been less than a week since Qantas’ epic 20-hour test flight landed in Sydney, and only days since Virgin Australia secured landing rights in Haneda, but Air New Zealand has already stolen both their thunder.
The flagship Kiwi carrier is launching direct flights from Auckland to New York as of October 2020.
Air New Zealand acting chief executive officer Jeff McDowall said yesterday this comes as the airline accelerates “its ambitions” for North America, and will be achieved with a 787-9 Dreamliner.
View this post on Instagram
“Air New Zealand is strongest when operating direct flights to and from our home base, and this reset will put us in the best possible position to take advantage of increasing demand across the Pacific Rim,” he said.
“Visitor growth to New Zealand is strongest from North America and performance of our new service to Chicago is exceeding expectations.”
“New York has been an aspiration for Air New Zealand for some time,” he added. So what are the implications? Is Air New Zealand stepping on Australian airlines’ toes with this change? Do Qantas and Virgin Australia have reason to be worried?
To shed light on these questions D’Marge got in touch with Immanuel Debeer – a prolific pointy end flyer (and owner of frequent flyer website Flight Hacks) – who travels between Australia and the US more often than most people fly between Melbourne and Sydney.
“Yes, it’s a great move,” Immanuel told D’Marge, “Air New Zealand already has a lot of flights into Australia so it makes for an easy connection. More often than not their pricing is also a lot sharper compared to Qantas and Virgin Australia so it makes sense for Aussies to do a quick stop in Auckland.”
So far so stepping on toes.
“Air New Zealand also offers the SkyBed in Economy class, which is three seats that fold into a bed (very useful if you’re travelling with kids),” he says. However, he adds, “Their business class seats are unfortunately very outdated and lack privacy and space.”
“That said, Air New Zealand is working on a ‘secret’ new seat design for the business class cabin which is set to be released in 2020. Until then, the Qantas business class seats are much more comfortable.”
View this post on Instagram
So even though Air New Zealand is not announcing designs on Qantas and Virgin Australia’s share of the Pacific Rim market, their actions suggest that’s exactly what they are doing (or, at least, that they are trying to ensure they get the full extent of their own share).
In any case, it’s a competitive offering, with Immanuel comparing the various airlines’ flight prices from Los Angeles from Perth.
“While Qantas clocks in at $11,903 return and Virgin Australia $14,672 (yikes!), Air New Zealand charges $4,945 for the same flight with a quick stop in Auckland. The total travel time is only 15 minutes more as well so it’s an easy win. I think we will see some strong competition on this New York route; a classic Aussie vs Kiwi contest.”
As competition tends to lead to better value tickets and reduced prices, this looks like good news for Australian, Kiwi and American travellers alike.
D’Marge has reached out to both Qantas and Virgin Australia, but at the time of publication is yet to receive a response.
The other aspect of the change, which Air New Zealand acting chief executive officer Jeff McDowall announced yesterday in a media release, is the decision to drop Air New Zealand’s Los Angeles to London flights (a route that has been in place since 1982), a move that has been made due to the same market changes that prompted the new route from Auckland to New York.
“Today Kiwis have more than twice the number of ways to fly to London than a decade ago and preferences have changed… Less than 7 per cent of all airline travellers between Auckland and London chose to fly via Los Angeles last year.”
“At the same time,” he continued, “The Atlantic has become one of the most hotly contested routes in the world, and Air New Zealand lacks the home market advantages and scale of the North American and European airlines we’re up against.”
View this post on Instagram
Mr McDowall also said Air New Zealand’s Los Angeles – London route would operate as scheduled until October 2020, to allow its staff time to transition into new jobs and to avoid any impact to customers who already have trips booked.
For those interested in flying from Auckland to The Big Apple (once the route is operational), the route will start with three flights a week from Auckland Airport to the NY-adjacent Newark Liberty International Airport, which is also a hub for Star Alliance partner United Airlines.
As for what it will do to your body: it’s much like flying from Sydney to Dubai, but an hour and a half longer (the 14,178km trek, which is the fifth-longest flight in the world by distance, will take 15 hours and 40 minutes from Auckland to New York, and 17 hours and 40 minutes on the return leg).
Godspeed.
