Science Has Found A Way To Avoid The Dreaded Holiday Weight Gain
Science Has Found A Way To Avoid The Dreaded Holiday Weight Gain

‘Tis the season for peace on Earth, good will toward men, and gluttony that would make the Romans blush.

Many of us have resigned ourselves to packing on pounds during the festive season, but holiday weight gain is far from inevitable (even when Auntie Joan is giving you the stink eye for not taking seconds of her pie).

Follow these simple tips to stay svelte even when you’re surrounded by the season’s most seductive temptations.

Don’t Skip Breakfast

Holiday Weight Gain
The jury’s out on whether it’s actually the most important meal of the day, but breakfast is key to successful weight management before a feast. Skipping meals in order to “save your appetite” for a debaucherous dinner can backfire by causing you to binge later on (hello, two extra slices of cake with dessert). Multiple studies have concluded that omitting breakfast encourages compensatory behaviour at lunch or dinner.

Take It Slow

Holiday Weight Gain
Ease up on the gas, Speed Racer. As much as you want to shovel every delicious dish into your face posthaste, it pays to pace yourself. Research shows that the quicker you eat, the less time your brain has to register that you’re full, causing you to overeat long before your body has had a chance to realise it’s stuffed. Eating slowly, on the other hand, may help to maximise satiation and reduce calorie intake during meals.

After you’ve finished your first plate, hold off on a second helping for at least 20 minutes – the average time it takes for your brain to get the message that your stomach is full – before going for round two.

Use Smaller Plates

Holiday Weight Gain
As our waistlines have expanded, so too have our plate sizes, and it’s causing an optical illusion that incites overeating. A large plate with empty space surrounding the food tricks your brain into assuming the serving contains less food than a smaller dish with no empty space – even if both plates contain exactly the same amount. In other words, it’s your eyes, not your stomach, that count calories. And they aren’t very good at addition.

Use the optical illusion to your advantage. Serve less healthy foods from smaller dishes to trick yourself into feeling satisfied with less, and serve healthful eats like fresh veggies on larger plates to encourage consumption.

Fill Up On Protein, Fiber And (Healthy) Fats

Holiday Weight Gain
It’s not all bad news. There are some things you should eat more of if you’re trying to lose or maintain your weight. First up: protein. Diets high in protein are associated with greater satiety, and as an added bonus, are great for muscle growth. Next: fiber. Fill up on fiber-filled items like fruits, vegetables and legumes to stay fuller, longer. Lastly, remember that not all fats are bad fats. Healthy fats from things like avocados, nuts, and olive oil provide essential vitamins and also promote lasting feelings of satiation.

Turn A Blind Eye To Temptation

Holiday Weight Gain
Out of sight really is out of mind, and science has the research to prove it. One study found that just having food in your field of vision makes you more likely to eat it. Face away from the feed to literally turn your back on temptation. Another study that examined eating as an automatic behaviour found that changing the environment is a better strategy for beating overconsumption than relying on human willpower. Leave food in the kitchen, out of sight and out of reach, rather than displaying it directly on the table.

Drink Responsibly

Holiday Weight Gain
Anyone who’s had a big night out knows the dangers of uncontrollable snacking once a buzz sets in (not to mention that alcohol adds heaps of unnecessary calories to your diet). To prevent caving to your cravings while imbibing, swap short and squat glasses for tall, thin ones. Research shows that people tend to pour a smaller volume of liquid into tall glasses than they do into short ones, meaning you’re likely to down less in a single sitting. Save the small and stocky glasses for water, which you should be guzzling to help you feel full.

The ARIA Awards Red Carpet Is Proof That Australian Men Struggle With
The ARIA Awards Red Carpet Is Proof That Australian Men Struggle With "Fashion"

If fashion is an expression then this expression is kind of shit.

We’re all for expressing yourself through style but when it comes to awards nights, Australian men simply pale in comparison to our distant cousins from the U.S and the U.K in terms of ‘fashion’.

Is this outfit thought out? Is there a strict dress code? Is there no dress code? Will I look like a walking peanut in this?

All of these are legitimate questions which need to be addressed before gracing any red carpet event. It’s also an ideal that Aussie men seemingly struggle with every single time as more priority is given to outdoing one another in front of cameras than just looking good.

Aussie men, a bit of understatement and prudent preparation in the wardrobe goes a long way. And it will certainly do you a lot better in the long run than just being featured in a box on page 220 of some tabloid’s social pages.

Here's How Many Coffees You Should Be Drinking A Day To Stay Healthy
Here's How Many Coffees You Should Be Drinking A Day To Stay Healthy

We all know that a great coffee can be the defining factor between mentally murdering your boss at 9am or waxing lyrical to them about last night’s EPL score.

Conor McGregor is a closet coffee fiend

Well for lovers of the bean, there’s now even better news from scientists. Researchers from the University of Southampton are claiming that we can actually enjoy more coffee a day than what was previously thought as safe. More specifically, these lab coats are suggesting that the overall benefits of drinking coffee actually outweighs the risks. Take that, high blood pressure.

The study as published in the BMJ is oddly based off 220 other existing studies on coffee and suggests that drinking up to four cups of the brown stuff a day may have substantial health benefits. These benefits included the reduction in risk of liver disease, diabetes, dementia and some cancers. The study even went as far as claiming that coffee drinkers were less likely to die from stroke.

Looking at the figures even closer, it was revealed that three to four cups a day equated to a 17% reduction in the chance of death – from all causes. For those who go all out and drink up to seven cups a day? Congratulations – you’re far from dying of an exploding heart with the study claiming a 10 percent reduced chance in death with this amount.

Naturally these claims should be taken on board with caution and the knowledge that the health benefits are not universal. Pregnant women for example are warned against high coffee consumption. We’re assuming the same also goes for those with heart problems (which is kind of odd if you’re trying not to die by drinking coffee).

This new study backs up the British National Health Service’s caffeine recommendations which states that non-pregnant adults can consume up to 400mg of caffeine per day. In coffee speak that’s four mugs of coffee with 100mg of caffeine per mug, three cups of filter coffee with 140mg of caffeine per cup or five cups of tea with 75mg of caffeine per mug.

As noted by Refinery29, these health claims are all based off observational data that supports existing studies rather than solid evidence.

“Factors such as age, whether people smoked or not and how much exercise they took could all have had an effect,” Professor Paul Roderick, co-author of the study, told the BBC. His insight did however support the consumption of coffee.

“There is a balance of risks in life, and the benefits of moderate consumption of coffee seem to outweigh the risks.”

Perhaps cold brew coffee could be the answer?

Brace Yourselves, These Are The Worst Exercises For Your Back
Brace Yourselves, These Are The Worst Exercises For Your Back

Walk into any commercial gym and you will often see girls and guys completing sketchy looking exercises that certainly could cause some back issues.Pair that with sitting in front of a computer all day and you have a recipe for back pain disaster.Aside from all of the issues that can come about from being desk bound, the biggest exercise culprits are actually the following common practices.

Sit-Ups

Do it wrong and your back’s in trouble
While this exercise is fine if you’re doing it correctly, the reality is that most of us don’t. Instead we use our hip flexors or we lead the movement with our head instead of our core, which puts unnecessary pressure on the neck and upper spine. If you’re not really feeling your sit up in your core, give this exercise a miss as you can literally work your core in most exercises making this one redundant if you are not doing it properly. Alternate options could be a half crunch, dead bug or a bicycle crunch.

Overhead Lifts

Some compromise this exercise by weakening their core and arching their back.
With good form this exercise is fine, but if you don’t know how to lift properly, then goodbye lower back.Be very careful with overhead lifting exercises as lots of people compensate this exercise by weakening their core and arching their back. When starting out, always lift light weight to get used to the movement pattern before adding more resistance and heavier weights.

Squats

Not many people have good squatting technique
We’re going to go out and say it: Lots of people do not have good squatting technique. Add a heavy weight and you end up grinding your spine in order to stand up under the weight. If you have been properly trained, squats shouldn’t be an issue for your back, but be mindful of adding weight if you haven’t had your form corrected by a coach and if you are using squats in a HIIT setting. And remember: technique usually starts to go as you start to get tired.

Running

The impact could be worse than you think
Running is also a common culprit for back pain due to repeated stress and heavy impact each time your foot strikes the ground.Make sure you do a series of targeted mobility exercises before you run as if you have tight hips that can be an issue for back pain while running. Also make sure you buy yourself a pair or supportive shoes; there are a lot of active stores now that have experts who can help you find the best shoe to suit your individual athletic needs.Ben Lucas, a former professional NRL player,  is the owner and co-founder of Flow Athletic, a yoga and fitness studio based in Paddington, NSW, Australia.

Australian Doctors Warn Men Against Buying This Dangerous Sex Pill
Australian Doctors Warn Men Against Buying This Dangerous Sex Pill

Producing three times more semen whilst boosting fertility and orgasm levels might sound like a stretch, but one sex pill being sold online is promising to do just that. And today Australian health experts are warning men to stay well away from them.

Semenax: “You’ll perform like a PORN STAR”

Semenax was brought to the attention of the local drug regulator after it was found to contain an undeclared substance that is banned from entering Australia.

The substance named Yohimbine can only be obtained via prescription and is often used on dogs to reverse the effects of sedatives. Previously, the chemical had been linked to erectile dysfunction treatments but none of which have been approved in Australia.

According to the Australian Semenax website where the pills can be bought, the drug increases ejaculation during sexual intercourse by creating more semen.

“Each orgasm will be SUPER INTENSE!’ and “You’ll perform like a PORN STAR!” reads the site. The site even includes a testimonial from a ‘Stephen’ who claims his semen volume tripled “in just five weeks” of taking the pills.

According to the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), unregistered drugs like Semenax can pose a deadly risk to a person’s health. They’ve also urged anyone who have bought the pills online to exercise extreme caution, see a doctor and to dispose of them at their local pharmacy immediately.

“The TGA is working with the Australian Border Force to help stop future shipments of Semenax capsules from entering Australia,” the Sydney Morning Herald reported in a statement. “If these capsules are found at the border…they will be seized and destroyed.”

We’ll keep you posted on any coming news.

Vacheron Constantin Unveil Two Distinct Timepieces Ahead Of SIHH 2018
Vacheron Constantin Unveil Two Distinct Timepieces Ahead Of SIHH 2018

2017 may be winding down but Swiss watchmaker Vacheron Constantin still have a few surprises up their sleeve with the unveiling of two distinct timepieces ahead of SIHH 2018.

The first piece comes in the form of the Traditionelle Complete Calendar Collection Excellence Platine, a full calendar wristwatch completed in platinum. The case is a 41mm platinum housing featuring traditional curved lugs and a 30 metres water resistance rating. Flipping the watch around will reveal a transparent caseback which proudly boasts the in-house made automatic calibre 2460QCL automatic movement.

This piece of engineering affords the timepiece a moon phase indicator along with day and date functions. A 40-hour power reserve ensures that the time will continue ticking over even in the absence of movement beyond 24-hours.

The details are all presented on a sand-blasted platinum dial which coincides with the aesthetics of the platinum moonphase disk. This platinum finish is further enhanced with fine details like the blue markings for the date.

Only 100 pieces of the Traditionelle Complete Calendar Collection Excellence Platine will be produced.

Moving into sportier territory, Vacheron Constantin have released two new versions of their Overseas Dual Time which is targeted at the everyday wearer.

The Dual Time features a 41mm stainless steel case which wears Vacheron’s signature bezel design along with an in-house movement in the calibre 5110 DT which affords a respectable 60-hour power reserve. The functions of the Dual Time complication allows for the standard hours, minutes and seconds for the local time and an extra central hand marked with a red arrow which is the home time indicator.

There’s also an AM/PM indicator at the 9 o’clock to make travel timekeeping a breeze whilst an oversized date display sub-dial sits at the 6 o’clock mark for correlation to the local time. Dial colour options for the Overseas Dual Time comes in either a deep blue or silver tone whilst both are paired to a stainless steel bracelet featuring the watchmaker’s proprietary strap changing system which eliminates the need for tools. Included in the package is a blue or black alligator leather strap, and a blue or black rubber strap.

For something a bit more elegant, there’s a Dual time piece featuring an 18K 5N pink gold case with silver-toned dial.

The pieces will officially make their debut in February at SIHH 2018.
