Best Scarf Brands For Men That Will Help You Defeat Winter In Style
Best Scarf Brands For Men That Will Help You Defeat Winter In Style

Scarves have a history that goes back thousands of years, all the way to the ancient Egyptians, who used to wear them so that the heavyweight of their jewellery was protected against their skin. This might be a long way away from how gents wear them today, but there are still similarities in that a well-chosen scarf can go a long way to adding an air of luxury and class to an overall look.

Today, scarves can be worn in a number of ways, such as the classic criss-cross fold which complements a suit and briefcase, or the single fold, often the knot of choice for indie mods. Choosing the way you are going to wear a scarf, and more importantly, what with, should be seriously considered before any purchase.

Whether you’re looking for something to stop the cold creeping through the gaps in your overcoat, or something light and colourful to protect you from the summer rays, there are endless opportunities when it comes to elevating your ensemble with a scarf.

Experts Explain Star Footballer Mo Salah’s Incredible Body Transformation
Experts Explain Star Footballer Mo Salah’s Incredible Body Transformation

When we look at ourselves in the mirror and see a less-than-ideal figure staring back at us, we will most likely think, “How am I ever going to change this?”. After all, to get a seriously ripped torso, it can take not months, but years of hard work and dedication to training and eating the right foods.

But each year passes quicker than the last, so if you’re not careful you could miss your chance to build a god-like body. Which would be a shame because – as Liverpool star striker Mohamed Salah has proved – being skinny doesn’t have to be permanent.

That Mo Salah transformation 🇪🇬

A post shared by Football/Futbol/Soccer (@skillersfactory) on

The Egyptian forward joined Chelsea Football Club in 2014, with a rather delicate frame. He was physically fit, of course, but compared to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo – who is eight years Salah’s senior – his body wasn’t necessarily one that we’d all aspire to.

Fast forward to 2020 and, along with the transformation of Liverpool FC – who are now a staggering 22 points clear at the top of the EPL table – Salah has become a modern-day Egyptian God, with a body to match. Six years may seem like a daunting amount of time to commit to training – and yes, Salah has the luxury of being able to train in world-class facilities, with trainers at his beck and call – but if you follow a training regime, then you too can earn yourself washboard abs.

But what exactly would that training regime include? We spoke to Dean Jamieson, owner of Lean Performance Gym in Taren Point, Sydney, to find out what sort of workouts the Champions League Winner has undergone to achieve such a transformation, beyond getting a wax and flexing…

Here’s what the personal trainer and strength coach had to say: “Mo looks as though he has not only tidied up his nutrition protocols but also implemented a strength training program as the gain in muscle mass is very visible in this photo.”

How can the average guy do this? Dean says: “to gain muscle mass like Mo you the best thing to do is implement compound lifts to your training program: for example squats, bench press, deadlift, pull-ups, overhead press, sled work and carries.”

DMARGE then spoke to change expert and founder of the Ultimate You Change Centres, Andy Anderson, who confirmed Dean’s analysis: “Based on the pictures, and shaving and flexing aside (he is clearly flexing and tensing in the ‘after’ pic), I would say that he’s definitely increased his lean muscle mass.”

“Purely speculatively, I would say that he would definitely have increased his calories from both carbs and protein and changed up his weights routine,” Andy continued. “As a professional soccer player, strength work and weights would definitely have been part of his training program all along, but I would say he’s increased the volume of his weights.”

“His shoulders are more defined, most likely from lateral shoulder raises, he’s definitely done some more ab work and it looks like he’s added heavier bench press to work his chest.”

Andy then told us, “With his body type – ectomorph – he looks naturally lean, so he’d respond to this really quickly in terms of both building muscle and dropping some fat which would help him look more defined. As a soccer player who is undoubtedly burning off a huge amount of calories every day, he would have had to increase his calories from both protein and carbs to build that additional lean muscle mass.”

As for how to do it yourself, and get in tip-top shape, Andy advised us to keep your expectations (and a reasonable timeframe) in check: “with any body transformation or program, to get that lean and be that defined and toned – you are going to have to have a reasonable timeframe in place – 6 – 12 weeks” as well as to train “at least once a day, 5 – 6 days a week” and to be “pretty strict with your nutrition.”

“There’s a big difference between putting together a program for a guy who’s naturally skinny and one that might need to lose 20kg, or someone in between rocking a bit of a ‘dad bod.'”

But for a more generalised program to build muscle and lean down, Andy advises “fasting cardio in the mornings – either steady-state or sprints or a mix of both – and then weight training or a functional circuit session in the afternoons.”

In terms of exercises, Andy says “if you’re looking for bang for your buck time-wise, compound movements like deadlifts and squats are great as they work multiple muscle groups.” Also: “you’d definitely want to be doing bench press for chest and lateral shoulder raises for those defined shoulders and ab work like cable crunches or hanging leg raises,” he says.

“Hitting up a functional-style weighted class or boot camp is great too – one that features rope slams, kettlebells, sled pushes etc.”

Got all that? A new rig awaits.

The Cold Hard Truth About Having An ‘Ex With Benefits’
The Cold Hard Truth About Having An ‘Ex With Benefits’

Is your current relationship stumping your own personal growth, but the sex is out of this world? Or are you on the market and fancy a bit of rumpy-pumpy to pass time, and you know that ex of yours is single too? Is it possible to have a casual arrangement with an ex?

It’s a question recently proposed on The Hook Up podcast “Is it possible to rewind your relationship?”. The podcast, hosted by Nat Tencic, featured a call-in from Charlotte, who explained to Nat that her boyfriend wanted to dial things back a tad and keep things strictly casual. Whilst she had initial doubts because the relationship had already been full-on, including the dreaded meeting of the parents, she agreed and she says she’s now happy with the arrangement.

Her reasoning for agreeing?, she says, “I don’t want to lose all of him, to go from being in each other’s lives to nothing. It allows us to stay on speaking terms and ultimately helped with the actual break up because it slowed things down instead of being so brutal.”

However, despite her positive attitude, the odd niggle of doubt has, perhaps unsurprisingly, crept in on more than one occasion.

“Am I worth more than this? Will he sleep with other people? Are we casually exclusive?” are all questions she projected to the host, and couples therapist Liz Neal.

Liz first asked Charlotte if she was in love with her ex and current linin-romper when they were an official item, to which she responded, “yes” and added that the feelings were still there “in a way”. Liz goes on to say that there can, in fact, be pros to keeping things casual with an ex, although obviously, there are many cons as well.

She says that if the two people involved both come to the decision mutually, then there “is a better chance it can work, as there are a shared set of assumptions and expectations.”

However, she adds that in most cases, it’s usually one person that proposes, or tells the other, that it’s a casual relationship or nothing at all. In this scenario,

“it’s involuntary and there will be feelings of rejection, inadequacy, and suspicion – will that person want to see other people?”.

She goes on to say that if you agree to keep things casual so you can hold on to that glimmer of hope that you will one day get back together, then it will make things much more difficult. As soon as you finish your shuffle under the covers, you’re going to hope it will be the moment they say “let’s get back together”, and as soon as they leave, you’re going to wonder if they think about you.

Liz says ultimately, this will cause misaligned feelings that could potentially be damaging to your own personal wellbeing.

Nat poses the question to Liz, “is it more hurtful doing this to your partner or soon-to-be-ex, or to just break it off?”

Liz responds by saying:

“Ethically, the best thing to do is be totally honest and upfront. Being true to yourself is the key. If you know you’re hurting the other person, then you shouldn’t do it”

But forgetting ethics for one second, what if the sex really is that great, but you just can’t commit to a relationship any longer? To this end, Liz says “if you do find you connect with someone sexually, then it’s not uncommon for a relationship to end but for the sex to remain, because it’s the most satisfying part, so will be the last thing to go.”

“However, it will be difficult to sustain a casual relationship long term, because past feelings will more than likely be brought up.”

Ultimately, keeping things going under the covers with an ex-flame is entirely down to the two of you as a couple, just make sure you can do so with no-strings-attached..

Why The Australian Government Should Take A French Attitude To Tech Regulation
Why The Australian Government Should Take A French Attitude To Tech Regulation

Technology surrounds us and is a major part of our everyday lives. We all pick up our phones several times a day, whether it be to send messages, scroll through our Instagram feed or do some online shopping. But what a lot of us don’t realise, is how much the technology in our hands needs to be regulated to ensure we’re getting the best possible product.

Apple is a prime example of how regulation can discipline the industry. Just recently, the California-based technology giant was fined A$41 million (€25 million) by France’s regulatory body, the Directorate-General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Prevention, for intentionally slowing down older iPhones following iOS software updates, without informing customers. Apple’s malpractice may not be news to you, as it first came to light back in 2017 that devices were being slowed down to help counteract aging battery performance.

While Apple claimed this was for consumers’ own good, not everyone was sold…

As Mashable reported on Saturday, “Apple has since apologized for its miscommunication over the issue and offered discounted battery replacements. But that didn’t stop them from being fined by the Italian government in 2019, and now by France.”

However, Australia hasn’t issued any fines of its own, rather seemingly plodding along and taking a ‘she’ll be right’ (or, let’s not scare off investors) approach. So the Competition and Consumer Commission – the country’s regulatory body – either doesn’t care that Apple misled its citizens, or it just hasn’t decided yet if the crime is worthy of a high-figure fine.

It’s not to say the ACCC is completely devoid of taking any sort of action against any corporation, as in December 2019 it was announced a dedicated unit would be set up to “monitor and report on the state of competition and consumer protection in digital platform markets.”

Not to mention, the Australian Government did fine Apple $9 million in 2018 for misleading customers about their rights to a repair, after the company insinuated that having your device repaired by a non-Apple shop voided your rights to an Apple repair job.

But we’d like to see them hit Apple where it hurts, over more substantial issues, inspiring them to build better batteries – or at least be more transparent about their aging (and IOS updating) services – in the future.

F1 Legend Proves Why Boomers Will Never Understand Instagram
F1 Legend Proves Why Boomers Will Never Understand Instagram

“All those young people just want to sit and stare at their phones all day”. A phrase (or a variation thereof) we’re all too used to hearing. It’s usually spoken by older generations, boomers mainly – those born between 1946 and 1964 – who didn’t grow up with technology, but are now forced to live in a world where it consumes us.

Those that fall into the Millennial/Generation Y category (1977-1995) or to a greater extent, Generation Z (1996-present) have had the luxury and fortune of being born in the ‘golden age of technology’ (although some may debate this) where having your eyes glued to your phone screen is second nature. Nowhere has this been made more apparent than with the rise of Instagram, the photo-sharing social media platform that boasts more than one billion users.

It’s used to keep up to date with celebrities, the latest developments from various companies, our friends of course, and the baffling world of the influenza influencers. One man who is unequivocally a boomer and who doesn’t quite ‘get’ Instagram, is F1 driver turned pundit, Martin Brundle.

For the uninformed, Brundle is a British driver who never won a Formula 1 race from his 158 starts, although his nine podium finishes and various other results netted him 98 points from a 10-year career. Nothing to exactly shout home about. He’s currently a commentator and pundit for Sky Sports’ coverage of the racing series.

Speaking to Auto Motor und Sport (via Planet F1) in Germany, Brundle spoke of his bewilderment as to how drivers can be rivals on the track, but friends off it, and interact with each other through Instagram.

“I don’t get it at all, today’s Instagram-driven world, joking with each other,” he told the racing publication.

“Best friends, how can that last? How can you be such an intense rival? We had friendships in the past but eventually, that would be broken because you would end up fighting over the same corner at the same time.”

“I don’t understand how they can be joking around on Instagram. That’s the way they are and that’s how it seems to work for them, and it’s good for us to observe, but I can’t see how the system functions like that.”

He’s referring to high-profile rivalries from yesterday in Formula 1, such as Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, or James Hunt and Niki Lauda. They weren’t friends off the track and they certainly weren’t friends on it. Yet despite having an issue with how drivers interact with one another in the modern-day, Martin does have his own personal Instagram account, with a healthy 38,000 followers.

He therefore clearly sees some value in it, but doesn’t fully ‘get it’. But that shouldn’t come as a surprise, as, according to Herosmyth, only 42 per cent of boomers own a smartphone, compared to 98 per cent of Gen Z’ers. And for those that do own a smartphone, they use it primarily as a news source and not to post shameless selfies (something Brundle is guilty of), pictures from their afternoon walks or snaps of their fish ‘n’ chips.

Brundle is no doubt on the platform because of his status in the world of celebrity, but for the regular boomers out there, we’re sure they’d be much happier browsing the latest political news developments with a cup of tea, than requiring the constant barrage of visual information Gen Z’ers need to survive.

Spike Lee Delivers The Ultimate Sartorial Kobe Tribute At The Oscars

The Oscars signals the last major ceremony to take place during the annual awards season, but while they take a look back at the moments to celebrate from the previous 12 months, they also take a chance to commemorate the lives lost during the In Memoriam segment.

This year, American basketball legend – and Oscar winner – Kobe Bryant will be honoured, following his death in a helicopter crash on the 26th of January, 2020, but American film director, producer, and actor Spike Lee decided to offer up a tribute of his own through his choice of suit.

Lee’s red carpet tribute comprised a custom Gucci suit in purple and yellow – the colours of the Los Angeles Lakers, the basketball team Bryant played for, for his entire 20-season career – along with his jersey number ’24’ stitched on the back. He finished his outfit off with a pair of Nike Kobe 9 Elite Strategy basketball shoes, a purple ‘newsboy’ hat from Baron Hats and a pair of purple thick-framed glasses.

Oh, and he rocked a A$60,000 rose gold Rolex GMT Master II, to further cement himself as the best-dressed man at the ceremony.

The She’s Gotta Have It director was a longtime friend of Kobe, having worked with him on a 2009 documentary Kobe: Doin Work, which followed Bryant for one day during the 2007-08 Lakers season in order to give an in-depth look into his work ethic and in-game mentality. Following the immediate aftermath of his death, Lee posted several images to his Instagram feed, comprising newspaper front pages and personal moments he shared with the NBA star.

It’s not the first time the director has paid tribute to a lost friend, as at the 2019 Awards he wore another purple suit, although that time to honour musician, Prince.

A sartorial slam dunk indeed.

Hidden Danger In World’s Most Famous Luxury Destination

They say luxury sups your soul, but recent reports suggest tourists risk a more immediate danger in the Maldives.

Regularly listed in rankings of “the world’s most luxurious destinations,” this small island nation’s ruffled waters and Instagram-perfect bungalows epitomise opulence.

But there lies a hidden threat.

As News.com.au reported on Saturday, crime, political instability and terrorism is marring The Maldives’ laid back image.

“An Australian man is recovering from being stabbed in the Maldivian capital of Male this week, along with two Chinese nationals, in a suspected terror attack. Maldives police have arrested three men over the incident and are now investigating their suspected links with Islamic State.”

As The New York Post reports, “This is not the first disturbing incident in the country of 400,000 people, who live on more than 200 islands, which boasts tourism as its largest industry.”

Even though the tropical archipelago (which sees about 7000 Australians a year) is generally safe for resort-staying tourists, it’s cities harbour unrest which occasionally spills out.

While Smarttraveller says to “exercise normal safety precautions in the Maldives overall” and while The Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has not changed its overall advice for the Maldives, both urge a high degree of caution in Malé, where drug and gang-related crime is on the rise and protests and demonstrations have been happening since 2015.

The Maldives is also seeing a rise in influence from Islamic State, News.com.au wrote, a claim backed up by a Reuters report which said, “[The] Islamic State claimed responsibility for deadly bombings in Sri Lanka in April last year, and has been looking to bolster its presence in the sub-continent after being driven out of its self-styled caliphate in Iraq and Syria.”

“The Maldives parliament has given sweeping investigative powers to counter-terrorism agencies, and authorities have stepped up operations against hardline Islamist groups.”
