Repeat Offender's Guide To Exploring The Real Gems Of London
Repeat Offender's Guide To Exploring The Real Gems Of London

So you’ve visited London more times than the queen’s seen a curtsey? Having ticked off the Tate, danced through Covent Garden and grazed at Borough, now you’re back in the UK capital and wondering: what next?

Well this 2000 year-old dolly has a whole host of off-the-tourist-agenda offerings to tempt repeat visitors. Here are LUXE’s top picks.

Where To Stay

Mondrian London

Perched in the famed Sea Containers building

Last time you stayed at nip/tucked The Savoy, this time why not cross the river and bed down at bold contempo bunker Mondrian London? Perched in the famed Sea Containers building and surrounded by atmossy Southbank’s sup n’ sip spots, it flaunts its nautical heritage through sinuous, moulded copper walls and colour-splashed modish abodes, some replete with patios and Thames outlooks.

Libation sensation Dandelyan is also here for botanical ‘tails, there’s a trig rooftop for sunnier climes, and brunch-tastic Sea Containers resto. 20 Upper Ground, SE1.

Ham Yard Hotel

Give the grittier, less touristy end of Soho a go

Give the grittier, less touristy end of Soho a go at this boho-chic, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it courtyard. This is the Ham Yard Hotel. Ninety-one character-packed, individually designed digs are decked with a Kit Kemp-selected jumble of eye-popping patterns, art, antiques and on-trend design accents, while outta-room entertainments include a best-in-Brit resto, bar, spa, library, cinema screen, rooftop herb garden and ab-fab 50s-style bowling alley. 1 Ham Yard, W1.

Where To Eat

Fera

Shimmy over to farm-to-table Fera for seasonal, polished Brit fare

If you’ve already done dine time at Dinner by Heston and Notting Hill’s The Ledbury, shimmy over to farm-to-table Fera for seasonal, polished Brit fare by Simon Rogan. Yes, this eatelier is inside art deco doyenne Claridge’s, but it’s keeping a low profile compared to the hotel’s glamazon bars, so you won’t have to book a table before your airline ticket – hoorah! Claridge’s, 49 Brook St, W1K.

Scott’s

For a clubby vibe, smart service and succulent sustainable seafood

Every schmuck and his schnauzer has heard about The Ivy and Chiltern Firehouse, for their celeb scenes, but plugged-in Londoners (and discreet A-listers) favour Mayfair sophisticate Scott’s for its clubby vibe, smart service and succulent sustainable seafood. Make like Mossy and get your PA to nab you a terrace spot in fine weather. 20 Mount St, W1K.

What To See

Sir John Soane’s Museum

For an intimate peek into how people used to live

Big daddies like the Natural History Museum and Tate Modern are, of course, a must. But for intimate peek into how people used to live, venture to one of London’s smaller, private house museums.

Overlooking the city’s largest public square, Sir John Soane’s former home is an enchanting, atmospheric escape stuffed with C.18th art, antiquities, sculpture, sketches, models and canvases.

The candlelit tour, first Tuesday of every month is all the more magical, but you have to be prepared to queue extra early. 13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, WC2A.

The Monument

The 311 steps will give your glutes quite the workout

Forget the London Eye, you’ll find fab vistas and a heck more history if you climb this iconic, gilded Doric column, built by Christopher Wren in testament to the Great Fire. The 311 steps will give your glutes quite the workout but it’s worth it for the clear autumn views from up top. Fish St Hill, EC3R.

Old Operating Theatre

Not one for Fanny fainthearted

After a macabre moment? Don’t even think of queuing for the London Dungeons, instead totter over to what is the only surviving C.18th operating theatre, set in the roof space of a Baroque church. Not one for Fanny fainthearted. 9a St Thomas St, SE1.

Where To Shop

Liberty

This age-old emporium housed in its iconic architecture

Avoid the hordes of Amex-flexing aspirationalists at Harrods or Selfridges,  and head instead to our favourite one-stop department shop, Liberty.

This age-old emporium housed in its iconic, faux Tudor building, is best in town for cutting-edge Brit designer threads and accessories (for him and her), exceptional beauty booty, dazzling artisan jewels and lest we forget, it’s gorgeous stash of fabrics, upon which it made its name.

Plus there’s a Margaret Dabbs Sole Spa, for London’s best pedis and Café Liberty for mid-retail refuelling. Regent St (enter on Gt Marlborough St), W1.

The New Craftsmen

Fine art for the home

The lovely Heal’s might be London’s best-known homewares haven, but for hand-wrought off-beat furny and natty nest featherings we prefer modest Mayfair concept store The New Craftsmen for it’s small-batch pieces from across the Isles, plus clothing, jewellery and toys to kit out your whole family. 34 North Row, W1.

McLaren's Vision For Future Racing Comes With 'Batman Driving Position'
McLaren's Vision For Future Racing Comes With 'Batman Driving Position'

Gran Turismo may just be a video game with a lengthy history to some, but when it comes to the franchise’s Vision GT program manufacturers can walk the line between reality and fiction without haemorrhaging huge bills for rolling concepts.

McLaren is the latest car maker to join this audacious virtual design program and the race car they’ve presented for the upcoming Gran Turismo Sport is as radical as it is suicidal.

The McLaren Ultimate GT is a concept car designed to go racing in the future. Add some neon lights and it might even look like it came straight out of a TRON film. The car features a full glass canopy complemented with a holographic HUD display and a rather eyebrow-raising lie-down-on-your-belly Batman driving position.

Whilst the idea is to have the driver’s line of vision at the centre and front of every apex, in the event of any crash you can pretty much wave your pretty mug and spine goodbye. Your legs should be fine though.

Now we know this is just a concept car but given it’s Gran Turismo, the “real driving simulator”, there should still be some fabric of reality weaved into these future vision cars – like staying alive.

Besides the whole safety aspect of the car there’s also issue of stresses on the neck and shoulders during hard cornering. Beyond the design flaws McLaren have graced the concept with a carbon fibre body, a hybrid drivetrain featuring a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 and electric motors to drive individual wheels. All up the car is able to muster out 850kW of power and 1,280Nm of torque from 0 rpm – just like a Tesla.

Gran Turismo Sport arrives in mid-October but you can check out how the McLaren designers came up with the car below.

Lewis Hamilton & Neymar Jr. Officially Announce Their Fashion Bromance
Lewis Hamilton & Neymar Jr. Officially Announce Their Fashion Bromance

Move over Jimmy and Justin, the standard bromance is dead.

In 2017 it’s all about finding that one true partner in crime who’s as equally loaded as you are before hitting up London Fashion Week in some of the season’s boldest threads – complete with sunglasses in the evening, naturally.

We’re talking about Formula One superstar Lewis Hamilton and football’s Neymar Jr., a pair who this year earned US$46M and US$37M in their respective playing fields.

The dynamic sporting duo weren’t afraid to get their colour on for two shows at the event which included the LOVE x Miu Miu LFW Party and the Tommy Hilfiger TOMMYNOW Fall 2017 Show.

And just like celebrity bromances, each showcased their own unique taste in wardrobe with Hamilton opting for some serious colour-blocking that would make the United Colors Of Benetton proud and Neymar who opted for double denim at the Tommy event.

At the LOVE x Miu Miu LFW Party the duo changed it up for night time duties with Hamilton channelling a bit of the 80s vibe with an oversized Homme sweater paired with black denim. Neymar meanwhile went down the trending streetwear route with a Supreme x LV bomber paired with distressed white denim, white tee and a cap – again, indoors. It’s a celebrity thing.

Floyd Mayweather Dropped US$26 Million In Cash On This Beverly Hills Mansion
Floyd Mayweather Dropped US$26 Million In Cash On This Beverly Hills Mansion

They don’t call him ‘Money’ for nothing. Following his triumphant win against Conor McGregor last month, Floyd Mayweather has a massive paycheck burning a hole in his pocket – so massive it may put him over the US$1 billion mark in total prize money over his undefeated career.

What’s a champ to do when he has so many zeros to blow? Invest in real estate, of course. Mayweather recently dropped US$26 million – in cash – on a swanky new address in Beverly Hills.

The mansion sprawls over more than 15,000 square feet of prime 90210 territory. According to the listing, the estate includes six bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a formal living room and dining room, a library, a gourmet kitchen, a family room, and a cocktail bar with an impressive display for your wine collection. There’s also a staff apartment, a gym, a spa, a four-car garage, and a 20-seat movie theatre equipped with its own concession stand.

The property features several towering old-growth palm trees for picture-perfect Los Angeles living, and a pool area that wouldn’t look out of place on Miami’s South Beach. The black-and-marble striped deck area is large and lavish, with a hot tub and lap pool and plenty of space for entertaining. There’s even a fire pit for those rare cool nights in SoCal.

Previous owners of the estate include the wife of a billionaire businessman and a film producer turned high-end Hollywood Hills property developer.

The pretty boy seems pretty pleased with his new purchase. Mayweather has spent the last two days shamelessly showing off his mansion on Instagram. Or as he calls it, “my castle.”

Here's Why You Always Get Sick Whenever You Travel
Here's Why You Always Get Sick Whenever You Travel

We’ve all been there. Happily in transit to your next greatest destination, ready to explore the unseen sights of your favourite favela red light district and then…tragedy. Your nose starts to run, the migraine starts to set in and you can barely lift your legs out of bed. Holiday, meet the sneaky S.O.B known as the common flu.

There could be an answer for your travel sickness

Whether it’s straight after a rewarding trip or the minute you step off that plane, getting sick after travelling seems to be a common occurrence for many. Why this happens is less straight-forward…until now. Popsugar recently spoke to Dr. Tania Dempsey, MD, of Armonk Integrative Medicine, who explained that the issue stems directly from stress.

“You don’t like being on an aeroplane, you need to figure out what you are going to pack for carry-on vs. check-in, you need to sleep in a strange bed in a strange hotel in a strange city, and you might have to change time zones and lose sleep either on the way there or the way back.”

Breaking it down even further reveals that there are ten reasons why your body is throwing in the towel before you even make it home. Here’s what they are, according to Dr. Dempsey.

Stress

Stress is a major contributing factor for you getting sick. More specifically, Dr. Dempsey says that, “stress lowers the immune system, making it more difficult to fight off colds and other infections that you can be exposed to while travelling”.

Exposure

Compounding this stress is the fact that crowded airports and planes are often petri dishes for germs to thrive. “Respiratory droplets are the most common way illness is spread, and if you are within two metres, you’re more likely to breathe it in,” says UC Health primary care physician Dr. Rita Sharma.

Low Humidity

Whilst recycled cabin air in a plane is often filtered, it comes at the cost of low humidity. “This can cause dryness in the nasal/air passages, which reduces your ability to block the harmful airborne particles,” explains Dr. Sharma.

Mode Of Transportation

“If you are flying or using some other type of public transportation (trains, buses, etc.), you are more likely to be coming into contact with lots of other people that may be sick and you probably don’t have the ability to move away from them, so if they sneeze or cough, you are in the line of fire,” says UC Health infectious disease expert Dr. Michelle Barron.

Adding to this is the germs which reside on the seats, handles and tray tables which are waiting to come into contact with unweary hands. “Once on your hands, if you touch your face (itch your nose or eyes), these germs (usually viruses) can enter into your mucosa and this leads to an infection,” says Dr. Barron.

Bad Choices

No, we’re not talking about your significant other. During your holiday it’s a given that you’ll be letting yourself ‘hang loose’ for a bit by eating frivolously, partying a bit too hard, sleeping a bit too little and drinking a bit too much. This is fine but according to Dr. Sherma, “not sleeping or eating well (add in alcohol) can reduce our immunity also”.

Not Washing Hands

“In a pinch, an alcohol-based hand sanitiser might be a decent substitute, but there is nothing like good old soap and water to wash away germs that you might have picked up while touching door handles, railings, or toilet seats while travelling in an airport,” says Dr. Dempsey.

Not Staying Hydrated

Staying hydrated with water means that your immune system is up for the job when it comes to fighting infections. “Flying in an aeroplane can be dehydrating, as can drinking coffee, soda, and alcoholic beverages served while flying,” says Dr. Dempsey. In other words, avoid these drinks and opt for plain water before, during, and after flying.

Forgetting Your Vitamins

“There is only some moderate evidence that zinc helps (mostly due to preventing viral replication), but if you do have a concoction that works, go with it (placebo effect helps 30 percent of people),” says Dr. Sharma.

Not Sanitising Enough

“My advice to someone who is travelling that wants to try and avoid the above scenario is to stock up on alcohol-based sanitisers and wipes,” says Dr. Barron. This means wiping down your seat, arm rests or tray right before you park for the next 16 hours. You might look like an OCD germophobe but what’s worse, some random’s opinion or an ill-free holiday?

Not Getting Enough Sleep

Never underestimate the power of a good sleep to prevent sickness on holidays. “If you are travelling across time zones, expose yourself to daylight when you get to your destination and avoid taking naps so that you can get to sleep on time,” says Dr. Dempsey.

Brabus Unleash Their Most Powerful G-Wagen Ever
Brabus Unleash Their Most Powerful G-Wagen Ever

The power-hungry lab rats over at Brabus have done it again.

Say hello to the Brabus 900, the company’s latest heavily modified luxury vehicle which takes the already-quick Mercedes-AMG G 65 and turns it into a carbon fibre beast fit for any zombie apocalypse.

Under the Brabus badge, the big V12 now sees an increase in displacement from 6.0-litres to 6.3-litres, pushing power figures up to 670kW (900hp) and 1,500Nm of torque. That’s enough to get the SUV from 0 -100km/h in 3.9 seconds before maxing out at an electronically limited 270km/h.

To squeeze out these monumental figures Brabus had to replace some of the engine’s internals including a billet steel crankshaft with larger bores, forged pistons, billet steel conrods, larger turbos and a revised exhaust complete with active flaps for controlling the decibels.

Interior-wise you get lashings of quilted leather, state-of-the-art entertainment system and finely upholstered drawers out back.

It’s the bodywork however that really makes the Brabus 900 a head-turner. A custom carbon bonnet with integrated intake scoop paired with fender flares which add 12cm to the car’s width, LED roof lamps, a spoiler and 23-inch forged wheels all add up to make this one of the meanest and most powerful Brabus off-roaders ever produced.

And the price? US$800,000 and limited to just 10 examples. You can put down your deposit and a limb over at Brabus.

'Kingsman: The Golden Circle' Premiere Had The World's Best Dressed Men In One Place

When making a film about ridiculously well-dressed super spies saving the world from annihilation, it’s only natural that you throw an equally sartorial red carpet party to suit. Literally. Suits everywhere.

This was the ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ World Premiere in London and it attracted the full line up of stars from the Kingsman sequel including Taron Egerton, Colin Firth, Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, Mark Strong and many more.

The agenda for the night? Showcase the film, look damn fine doing it.

The fashion itself was a collection of classic British three-pieces in grey, double-breasted pinstripe, blue tinge, classic black, checked and just about everything else in between (suit and beanie combo, anyone?).

If these men weren’t standing in front of a billboard you’d think it was this season’s suiting catalogue.

See the gallery to witness some of the world’s best-dressed men all in the same place and watch the trailer for the highly anticipated film.

Street Artist Turns French Chateau Into Psychedelic Skull Palace
Street Artist Turns French Chateau Into Psychedelic Skull Palace

Okuda San Miguel’s colourful pop surrealism has transformed public spaces around the world. Stepping into one of the Spanish artist’s pieces is like walking through a portal to another dimension, one ruled by geometric shapes, psychedelic characters, and riotous hues.

Okuda’s latest project brought him to France for the LaBel Valette Festival in Presigny-les-Pins. A hundred artists gathered to transform a late 19th century chateau during the weekend-long gathering, with Okuda getting the honour of painting the entire exterior.

He’s dubbed the creation Skull in the Mirror. The mural sports his trademark the-brighter-the-better palette, with a mix of playful polka dots and more angular designs wrapping around window frames and canvassing arched doorways. The dramatic tableau comes together on either side of the building to form two kaleidoscopic skulls.

“In this more mature period of my career, to travel and transform space around the world is one of my major sources of inspiration,” Okuda says of the piece. “The feedback with other cultures has made me feel alive, which is reflected in my creations, which always have a positive outlook.”

Okuda is well known for his immersive interventions that give forgotten spaces new life as large-scale graffiti havens. Previous projects include revitalising an abandoned church in Morocco and turning a Spanish church into a skate park.
