The only market that might be more overheated than property in Australia right now might be the car market.Prices of second-hand cars have risen dramatically over the last eighteen months, largely thanks to the Spicy Cough. Most obviously, the pandemic has made the prospect of public transport far less palatable for many. But social distancing has also inspired many people to buy vehicles in order to give themselves something to do – working on a project car is a COVID-safe hobby…The disruption to global trade and manufacturing it’s wrought has also seen fewer new cars rolling off production lines and fewer ships bringing cars to our shores, driving aftermarket prices right up. And with a global computer chip shortage complicating things, this will likely be the case for a long time to come.So with demand high and supply low, it’s easy to get ripped off, especially considering how much speculative buying and selling has been going on. If you’re looking for a used car in 2021, how do you make sure you’re not getting ripped off?DMARGE spoke exclusively with Adam Pay, Managing Director of mycar (previously Kmart Tyre and Auto), who points out that it’s never been more important for Aussies to be diligent when shopping for used cars, despite how market conditions might be making people less ‘fussy’.The biggest issue, according to him, is that “a lot of Australian second-hand car buyers don’t know what questions to ask during the inspection process, which might come across as ‘less fussy’ when it comes to shopping around.”
“[But] buying a second-hand car is a huge decision, so you want to make sure you’re spending on a car that is road ready to avoid any mechanical surprises down the road.”
In order to help make the car buying process easier, mycar has come up with an ingenious ‘Sense Check‘ inspection guide – an intuitive checklist based around the five human external senses designed to help even the most mechanically unsavvy shoppers diagnose common car problems.RELATED: Devastated Land Rover Owner’s Warning For Australia’s Luxury SUV DriversOn top of this, Pay has shared some other important things Australians should be checking when inspecting a second-hand car:• “Look at the exterior and feel for any bubbling or rust in the paint, particularly around the edges of panels.”• “Jump in the driver’s seat and see if the temp gauge rises when you turn on the ignition (without starting the engine). If the temp gauge rises, then it’s probably too hot to check the engine and I’d suggest waiting until it cools down.”• “Pop the bonnet and remove the dipstick, inspect the cleanliness and viscosity of the oil.”• “Start the engine and smell the air from the A/C once it’s turned on to see if the air smells damp or mouldy. Then go for a test drive and listen for strange noises when you apply the brakes and feel for any surging vibrations.”

While most Australians haven’t been able to leave the country over the last eighteen months, vaccinated Americans are allowed to have the European summer holidays they’ve always dreamed of.Justin Bieber and his wife Hailey have been having a particularly nice European summer (Justin’s Canadian, but same difference). First, they were swanning about in Paris and even got a meeting with the French President, Emmanuel Macron. Now, they’re yachting around Greece, drinking champagne and eating like royalty. Must be nice.It seems as if Justin’s really acclimated to that #touristlife if his recent sartorial choices are anything to go by, too.On Wednesday, the 27-year-old musical superstar outed himself on Instagram wearing a real American tourist-core outfit: a colourful Bode shirt, Nike Dunk sneakers – “the people’s Jordans” – plus Tejesta sunglasses and a Fear Of God x New Era cap designed to emulate old-school MLB designs. But don’t be too quick to judge: we’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: loud short-sleeve shirts are back in a big way. Bieber’s is an exceptional contribution to this growing trend, and we’re all for it.

The Australian housing market represents a gaping cultural chasm. On one side you have renters and avocados, on the other you have landlords and full cream Flat Whites.
Or so the stereotype goes.
But though memes are often criticised as a way of outsourcing your brain (if you’re on Instagram, you don’t need to know the ins and outs of inflation, reserve banks and Australia’s ‘speculative’ attitude to property – you just need to know “Sydney = too expensive”) they tap into something real.
Memes, by definition, are widely felt. And when it comes to Australia’s housing market, particularly bonkers hotspots like some of those in Sydney, they hit the nail on the head.
As DMARGE reported last week, the property market is a more hot button topic than the stock market, because it affects us all more viscerally (we all need somewhere to live), and because there is a higher barrier to entry.
It’s understandable then that there is an insatiable need to analyse just exactly how screwed over we are getting (those of us looking to buy a house but who can’t yet). Every week or month it seems there is another viral graph or chart that makes people angry.
Though there are plenty of possibilities in this modern age so-called more ‘fortunate’ generations could never have dreamed of (don’t believe us? Read Steven Pinker’s The Better Angels Of Our Nature), and though there’s nothing worse than feeling sorry for yourself, let us coddle your self-destructive demons one more time…
Introducing: the latest thread to pop off in the r/ausfinance Reddit community.
Invoking as much masochism as you could need on a Thursday night, it claims to show what the average wage would be today, had average wages risen in tandem with house prices since 1993 (here’s a hint: they haven’t).
“Adjusted for house prices, the 1993 average wage would be $175,000 today,” the thread begins.
Unfortunately, the current (real) average Australian wage in 2021 is $89,122 per year (about half of $175,000).
“In other words, if most of your wages go into your house, and you currently earn less than $175k, you would have been better off as an average wage earner in 1993” the original poster of the thread continues.
“This may be obvious in reality, but seeing the numbers was surprising to me,” the Reddit user continues.
“Maybe it’s wages that are broken, not house prices. Now’s the time to ask for a raise.”
The user also adds, “This only takes into account the capital value, not interest rates, which were around 5% in 1993.”
Their analysis, they say, used aussie.com.au and Australian Bureau Of Statistics numbers.
It also sparked quite the debate in the comments section.
Some Reddit users commiserated…
“I was looking at a Malvern, Melbourne property, un-renovated…they bought it 37 years ago at $54,000. Now…$3m
pretty evident things have gone crazy at those numbers!!!”
… While others disagreed with the premise.
“Yep, there’s really not much point trying to draw comparisons between what was then, and what is now in my opinion. My best friends parents paid $800k for their coastal home in 2001, and current valuation (REA’s trying to get listing) have it at $4-5.8million.”
The same user continued: “You obviously feel happy for them, but we will never see those kinds of returns again in our lifetimes. Property is fucking cooked, and I think we need reform on how we view the property market, and curb housing as a commodity.”
Other comments included: “These returns are consistent with property increase for the last 120 years. Each generation pines about the missed opportunities of the past,” and “No one can fathom the future increase.”

Many watches and watch brands owe their origins or fame to different sporting pursuits.
The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso was originally designed for polo players. TAG Heuer’s identity is inseparable with modern motorsports. And guess what the Rolex Yacht-Master’s intended audience was…
When it comes to Blancpain, it’s all about diving. The Swiss brand might be the oldest surviving watchmaking brand in the world (having been founded back in 1735) but its biggest contribution to the horological landscape hit the market in 1953: the Fifty Fathoms, the world’s first modern diving watch.
One of the most alluring things about diving is getting up close and personal with sealife: from cuttlefish to coral, turtles to turbots, it’s truly magical being able to discover a whole different world of life and activity the likes of which are totally alien to land-dwelling creatures like ourselves.
Of course, the scariest – but perhaps most fascinating – creature one can come across during a dive is a shark. And none are quite so striking as the great hammerhead (Sphyrna mokarran), the largest of the bizarre-looking hammerhead sharks. To swim with such an intimidating nemesis is surely the goal of any dedicated diver.
Sadly, the great hammerhead is a critically endangered species, thanks to overfishing for both sport and consumption. But what does this all have to do with Blancpain?
Inspired by a personal encounter with a great hammerhead – and cognizant of their critically endangered status – Blancpain President and CEO Marc A. Hayek was inspired to start the Mokarran Protection Society (MPS), an organisation dedicated to studying and protecting these majestic sharks in French Polynesia; a crucial region for the species.
RELATED: ‘Stranded In Paradise’: Travellers Relish Ultra-Rare French Polynesia Experience
Now, in 2021, MPS – together with influential French biologist Laurent Ballesta and his Gombessa Expeditions team – is embarking on an ambitious project named Tamataroa (the local name of the great hammerhead in French Polynesia).
A three-year-long initiative with the objective of studying the ecology of this endangered species in order to initiate protection protocols in French Polynesia and along the shark’s migratory routes.
This consortium, brought together by Blancpain, will benefit from the scientific expertise of renowned shark specialists from the US, Europe, and Australia; and hopes to deliver a concrete management tool for regional and international authorities’ protection efforts for the great hammerhead. The project will also provide a major contribution to the world acoustic detection network, as well as innovative research protocols for the study of this and other shark species.
It’s a worthy project, one of a number of contributions to marine science and conservation Blancpain have made over the years with their Blancpain Ocean Commitment initiative. To date, the multiple activities passionately pursued by Blancpain in support of exploring and preserving the oceans have led to impressive tangible results, notably contributing to significantly extending the surface of marine protected areas around the world by more than 4 million km².
It speaks to the connection with nature that’s essential to diving as a sport and discipline. Just as no diver would want to be without a hardy timepiece to keep them safe during their adventures, diving without being able to experience sea life is hardly diving at all.

Blancpain ought to be applauded for putting their money where their mouth is and helping maintain the oceans so that humans and animals alike can continue to enjoy its life-giving elegance and mystery.

There are two basketball players widely considered to be the Greatest Of All Time: Michael Jordan and LeBron James. It’s hard to say definitely who the better player is, but it’s undeniable that both have dominated their respective eras of play more than any other player. What’s not a hard debate is about who’s the better dresser. Because it’s LeBron. MJ’s name might sell more signature sneakers but LeBron has gradually become one of the snappiest stars in NBA history – which is saying something, considering how fashionable the NBA is these days.Just take this outfit LeBron wore to a family and friends screening of Space Jam: A New Legacy on Tuesday. ‘King James’ looked casual but dapper in a John Elliott ‘Leather Moto Jacket‘ from the LA designer’s SS2021 collection; a colourful polo and black jeans; Louis Vuitton shades and a pair of Nike x Cactus Plant Flea Market Air Force 1 sneakers.

The addition of the jacket elevates what would otherwise be a rather understated look (especially for LeBron). It just demonstrates how valuable a good leather jacket can be in a man’s wardrobe. This biker’s jacket seems to be one of his favourite fashion items, having previously been spotted rocking it pre-game earlier this year. Although it seems as if these days LeBron spends more time driving expensive cars than bikes…RELATED: LeBron James Shows Off Unexpectedly Eco-Friendly 4×4 TruckSpace Jam: A New Legacy, of course, is the much-anticipated sequel to the cult 1996 live-action/animated sports comedy film that saw Michael Jordan appear on-screen alongside Looney Tunes characters like Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.Jordan was the biggest player of his day, so it only makes sense to have the sequel star the biggest player of today: LeBron James. The film is set to hit theaters in the United States on July 16th.

Jetstar is not known for its generous baggage allowance policy. But in a tale that is coming to be symbolic of this time, another dispute over being scalped for baggage (despite a sparse cabin) has one Australian passenger furious. That passenger, DMARGE Founder and Publisher, Luc Wiesman, was amidst this week’s state border lockdown chaos. Upon returning to Sydney, however, from the Sunshine Coast airport, he was left fuming after being charged an unnecessary fee for excess baggage, despite the cabin being far from full.Recent social media posts show Mr Wiesman is not alone in his Karen inspired outrage. A Tweet from Twitter user David Buchan-Swanson, posted on the 17th of June, complains of a similar issue.Mr Buchan-Swanson wrote: “I’ve given up on Jetstar. The savings v virgin to be treated like shit are not worth it IMO (especially if you add luggage – virgin incl. baggage is often the same/cheaper than jetstar + baggage).”
tbh i’ve given up on jetstar. the savings v virgin to be treated like shit are not worth it IMO (especially if you add luggage – virgin incl. baggage is often the same/cheaper than jetstar + baggage)
— David Buchan-Swanson (@deecewan) June 17, 2021
Before you jump in and ask: “What did you expect,” Mr Wiesman told DMARGE, “It’s not about the money.”“I get the rules,” Mr Wiesman said. “I’m happy to pay extras – but when it’s clearly just a grab for cash then it’s just stingy.”
“I never thought I would become the outraged Karen at the check-in counter. Not over $65, never.”
Everyone has their limits though: “We had our flight cancelled [due to lockdown disruption] and couldn’t select a different day. Eventually, after hours on the phone, we could change the flight.”Mr Wiesman said thanks to the original flight cancellation he had to purchase extra legroom seats twice (he told DMARGE he wasn’t refunded for the first one). While rules are rules, Mr Wiesman said the experience felt stingy when not one concession was made at any of the little opportunities the airline had to throw this old dog a bone, after cancelling his original flight and charging him a change fee (in a context where both Qantas and Virgin Australia are letting passengers change dates for free).
“Other airlines are not doing that [charging passengers for changing dates].”
This is strange during a time we thought Jetstar – and every airline for that matter – would want to make passengers feel good about flying again (and convince Australian passengers they had made the right choice opting for them over Virgin).“In a situation where travel plans are thrown into chaos, and passengers are spending a long time changing accommodation and flights, there has to be some leeway,” Mr Wiesman said.
“On full flights where people are clearly taking the piss with hand luggage it makes sense to charge accordingly. But to be charged for 2kg extra on an empty flight is just bloody un-Australian.”
#jetstar baggage policy makes no sense. How can 7kgs hand luggage include laptops?? Mine weighs about 2kgs. #NOTCOOL
— mrina (@mrina) April 11, 2015
Many passengers have decided lately that the new ‘middle market’ version of Virgin Australia, which has emerged since the airline went into (then came out of) administration last year, is a better choice for affordable travel than Jetstar. There is also a mountain of Tweets, both recent and historic, which show Australian passengers complaining about the same issues. One user, Amber Matthews, wrote on the 30th of May: “Will never fly Jetstar again, have always been warned they’re cheap but when travelling with friends they fit everyone’s budget… however this is the last strike, paid over $500 to change these flights already! You’d think this time they’d take some of the weight.”
Yep! Will never fly Jetstar again, have always been warned they’re cheap but when travelling with friends they fit everyone’s budget… however this is the last strike, paid over $500 to change these flights already! You’d think this time they’d take some of the weight
— Amber Matthews (@ambermatthews_1) May 30, 2021
Various other users have aired their complaints on Twitter too, as you can see below.
@JetstarAirways Be careful about booking any flights to Melbourne with Jetstar. Refusing to offer date change or credit voucher despite Covid restrictions imposed in Melbourne and on return to Queensland. Very poor.
— Danny G (@galvandanny) May 26, 2021
At what point in my life will I realize I don’t HAVE to fly Jetstar? They’re 3 hours late. I’m 2kilos over in baggage. I pay $50. They just delayed another 30mins. SO glad I was on the road at 5am to make this flight
— Jo Chichester (@jochichester) June 25, 2021
Though their gripes ring true, it is worth pointing out every airline in the world, Virgin Australia included, has a bunch of complaints levelled against them online. It’s just what angry passengers do.The problem? Airlines know they can get away with it, hence the ‘race to the bottom.’Want to know what you can do about it? See below. At the time of writing, Jetstar return tickets to the Sunshine Coast from Sydney are $106. Virgin Australia tickets, meanwhile, are $140 (with September being used as a month of comparison for both).$34 well saved? You be the judge.

Normally, we’d consider fawning over female celebrities and holding them up as some sort of ‘dream girl’ cringey, ungentlemanly behaviour. But when it comes to Sydney Sweeney, well, who are we to argue with The Internet? The 23-year-old actress and producer, known for her roles in Euphoria, The Handmaid’s Tale and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood isn’t just dreamy, but incredibly talented. She’s studying entrepreneurship at UCLA. She’s a trained MMA fighter. She’s even a stunt driver. Now it seems she’s also a dab hand at car restoration.Earlier this year, Sweeney started a TikTok account called @syds_garage in order to catalogue her experiences restoring and modifying a 1969 Ford Bronco. Where most celebrities go out and buy fancy cars, she’s doing it herself – mad respect. While the account is not new, most of Sweeney’s followers would have been unaware of it until yesterday, when she posted an image to Instagram showing what she had been getting up to on her (much lesser known) car restoration TikTok account.

While she seems to have her own private mechanic on hand for some of the more fiddly stuff – and has apparently penned some sort of promotional deal with US car classifieds Autotrader – it’s clear that she’s a genuine revhead. It’s real car tragic behaviour to start a separate social media account for your project build… And the fact she’s not posting this stuff on main shows she’s not just doing this for attention. Besides, it’s everyone’s dream to get their build sponsored. She just made it happen.RELATED: I Bought The Cheapest American Car In The Country… & It Was A Complete DisasterShe clearly has a thing for old Fords. This is the second original Bronco she owns, having bought a baby blue example for her 23rd birthday last year. She also shared her most recent automotive purchase on TikTok, too: an original Mustang she’s named ‘Britney’.
@syds_garagemeet my new baby britney gonna start working on her soon! ##cartiktok♬ Oops!…I Did It Again – Britney Spears
Men around the globe have long wondered what it takes to get Sydney Sweeney’s attention. Forget simping on Twitter; maybe the real answer is to go out and buy a Lincoln Continental Mark V and show off your skills with a spanner.Speaking of car restorations, read more about how one enterprising British firm is resurrecting the classic Land Rover Defender – although it’s not who you might expect.

Sometimes women get the short end of the stick when it comes to luxury watches. Many of the world’s most iconic timepieces don’t come in women’s sizes – take the Rolex Submariner or Daytona. Many women’s ranges, too, are rather unimaginative: shrink the watch, throw some jewels at it, and Bob’s your uncle. Boring.Breitling’s latest collection, however, does a bit more than that – and actually, is so cool that we can even see men ditching their prejudices against wearing women’s watches for it.The Breitling Superocean Heritage ’57 Pastel Paradise Capsule Collection (try saying that five times fast out loud) sees the Swiss brand’s handsome retro dive watch decked out in a variety of very summery pastel colours that immediately evoke a day at the beach – perfect for such an ocean-focused timepiece.
