The Best Men’s Running Shorts To Pound The Pavement In Style
The Best Men’s Running Shorts To Pound The Pavement In Style

Choosing the correct running shorts for your daily run isn’t a decision that should be taken mid-stride; they can be the difference between a sub-par and a seamless workout. Serious runners will require something spacious with a high cut to reduce overheating (and maximising movement), whilst we all need something soft, durable and comfortable that doesn’t chafe. If you’re trail running you may also want to think about how your running shorts will cope with mud, dust and water. And if you’re pounding it through the city you may want to consider how stylish (and well fitted) your running shorts are, before inadvertently exposing yourself to potential Tinder dates or career contacts.Phone pockets or not, you want something that says you’re as serious about your workouts as you are your running wardrobe – a statement of intent. But which running shorts are flapping in the international market right now, and what separates one from the other? With so much choice, we’ve put together this guide to help you score the best designs from around the world – all made by the most renowned sports houses – created to strike that fine balance between performance and style.

Men’s Running Shorts FAQ

Do you wear underwear with running shorts?

You do not wear underwear with running shorts that have built-in liners. The extra layer of fabric may only cause skin chaffing. Still, it should come down to your preference.

What are 2-in-1 running shorts?

2-in-1 shorts are those with compression shorts incorporated, replacing the inner lining. Shorts like these promote better blood flow and muscle activation. They are also generally more comfortable to wear.

How do you prevent chafing in running shorts?

To prevent chaffing, you may wear longer running shorts. The extra length will prevent the skin of your upper thighs from rubbing painfully together. Wearing compression shorts under your regular running shorts also works.

David Beckham & Pharrell Williams Teach You How To Look Cool Without Trying

Whether you call it football or soccer, whether you think streetwear is over-hyped or hectic, whether you think tattoos are an abomination or the hottest thing a man can graze his skin with, we all agree that David Beckham and Pharrell Williams are cool.

However, a big difference in their styles was recently revealed when retired football star Beckham was snapped with musician Pharrell at a party put on by Beckham’s whiskey company, Haig Club, at European restaurant Swan in Miami on Tuesday evening.

Beckham was in Florida earlier this year to oversee his football team Inter Miami CF’s MLS debut (wearing the coolest sneakers of 2020, no less), and as this latest sighting shows, it appears this project will see him flitting back and forth on a regular basis.

The unlikely men’s fashion icon, entrepreneur and owner of the most coveted right foot in the world, 44, cut a classic figure in a leather biker jacket while posing alongside the 46-year-old man who gave us the happiest top 40 hit this decade.

Beckham rounded off his outfit with a pair of black trousers of the slightly baggy ilk he has become known for over the last few years.

Pharrell, meanwhile, showcased his signature low-key style in mildly distressed khaki shorts, a thin grey wool jumper, square frame sunglasses and a navy Human Made baseball cap.

The snapshot also represents the different directions English vs. American style (generally speaking) has gone over the years, with Beckham representing the British gent’s preference for staple tailored pieces…

The Foam Roller Insight That Could Give Your Knees A New Lease On Life
The Foam Roller Insight That Could Give Your Knees A New Lease On Life

Knee injuries are one of the most common causes of “ex-athletes.” Why? Though your ankles and hips are crucial too, activities like changing direction at speed are impossible to execute without strong and stable knees.

Enter: the foam roller. It’s hardly high tech but this humble piece of gym equipment could solve more popliteal problems than you know. Use it right, and foam rolling, as part of a balanced exercise and maintenance plan, can keep your knees younger than most athletes (or gym bros) your age.

While we can’t all recover from catastrophic knee injuries like Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Tom Brady, if you do the preventative work, you can reduce your chances of sustaining them. This is where we turn to tools like foam rollers, which can help you reduce stress and strain that pulls your knee out of alignment.

Muscle Engineered, an Instagram account which teaches people about training based on scientific research and evidence, recently took to the internet with a post along those very lines, giving tips on how to keep your knees top.

‘ ⠀ Foam rolling the outside of your thigh (iliotibial band AKA ITB) is typically done to gain more range of motion, & reduce pain at the knee (particularly “runners knee”). There has been some back and forth about foam rolling the ITB band. Although there is very little research done on foam rolling of the fascial tissues not containing muscle, we can take a look at a study that did. ⠀ Get To Know What The ITB Is All it is a thickening of fascia that runs from the hip down to the knee. Your glutes and TFL muscle connect onto the ITB to help stabilize the knee. ⠀ Research In a 2018 study, they found that foam rolling over the IT band did not show any immediate changes in range of motion. But, by foam rolling the gluteal muscle, it showed significant increase in hip adduction (increased range of motion). ⠀ Practical Applications The IT band is a thickening of the fascia on the outside of the thigh. It doesn’t have much elastic properties. By instead foam rolling the muscles that attach and pull on the IT band which make it tight, this will help release the tension on the IT band. ⠀ There is definitely more research needed before drawing conclusions as with anything. This study was short term and used a healthy population so it can’t be directly applied to someone who is injured or has knee pain. ⠀ I would love to hear some of your thoughts down in the comments! ⠀ Make sure to I am offering a 12-week program designed using the latest scientific research and evidence! There is also a with this purchase. You will get a calorie calculator to help you figure out your nutritional needs. $. ⠀ #kneepain #foamrolling #itband #iliotibialband #legday #squatmobility ⠀ ⠀ Reference The effects of an acute bout of foam rolling on hip range of motion on different tissues MacGregor Hall, J. Key points? “Foam rolling the outside of your thigh (iliotibial band AKA ITB) is typically done to gain more range of motion, & reduce pain at the knee (particularly “runners knee”),” Muscle Engineered tells us.

However: you shouldn’t just roll your ITB (as many people do as a cursory move at the end of a training session), you should work on your glutes too: “a 2018 study found foam rolling over the IT band did not show any immediate changes in range of motion. But, by foam rolling the gluteal muscle, it showed significant increase in hip adduction (increased range of motion).”

That’s not to say you shouldn’t roll your ITB: as it’s fascia, rather than a normal muscle that can be stretched via normal means, foam rolling is an excellent way to release your ITB and reduce the load on your knee.

“The IT band is a thickening of the fascia on the outside of the thigh. It doesn’t have much elastic properties. By instead foam rolling the muscles that attach and pull on the IT band which make it tight, this will help release the tension on the IT band.”⠀

What it is to say, is that it’s not a bad idea to roll your glutes too. It’s also worth remembering, as Muscle Engineered points out, to take this as a suggestion and not as gospel (as with any one-off study), and only implement it if you find it works for you.

“There is definitely more research needed before drawing conclusions as with anything… This study was short term and used a healthy population so it can’t be directly applied to someone who is injured or has knee pain.”

Pierce Brosnan Falls Victim To All Too Common Fashion Faux Pas
Pierce Brosnan Falls Victim To All Too Common Fashion Faux Pas

You’re sitting at a lavish cocktail party, hair slicked back, watch game ticking, shiny suit nailing its debut. Or so you thought. You stand up and your heart skips a beat: your trousers, formerly at a perfect height, are now flapping around your ankles. Instead of looking a million dollars, you look like you just picked something up from Vinnie’s.

This is why you get suit pants tailored.

At least you can be safe in the knowledge it’s not just you. Celebrities are just as bad. They’re often our go-to for trends. But if they get it wrong on a regular basis, how are we ever going to learn? Enter: Pierce Brosnan, normally a beacon of sartorial hope, today a symbol of sin.

Why? Pierce yesterday attended the Prince’s Trust And TK Maxx & Homesense Awards at London Palladium, looking a picture of panache. That is until you divert your gaze to his ankles. Where there should be a glimpse of a sock, there’s nothing but a bunched up mess of material.

Some guys like this look, but we would say he needs to make another trip to the alterations shop to get them taken up a touch.

We may be used to seeing this error (time and time again) by the likes of Simon Cowell, but we expect better from our favourite retired 007. Especially when everything else is so on point – from the navy blue suit and black leather shoes to his facial hair (he also can usually be seen rocking a Speake-Marin timepiece, though on this occasion it is covered up by his blazer).

Having said that, he’s far from alone in making the blunder. Celebs the world over continuously neglect traditional style rules when wearing a suit. It’s usually because they’ve been sent it from a label, immediately throw it on before an event, get snapped wearing it once and then consign it to the depths of their vast wardrobe.

Australian men are arguably even worse: Ash Williams made a farcical fashion faux-pas whilst hosting the Miss Universe Australia finals last year. The Aussie comedian donned a tuxedo – the ultimate in formal attire – for the event but completely forgot to get it hemmed.

That’s just one example of the many outfits that have made us want to rinse our eyes with Dettol over the last year. So gents, for the love of all that is Holy, make sure your trousers hang at the right length. A quick trip to a haberdashery can make all the difference between a sharp dressed man and a blunt dud.

World’s Longest Coastal Path To Open In Most Unlikely Location
World’s Longest Coastal Path To Open In Most Unlikely Location

Sydney’s Wedding Cake Rock. Hawaii’s Kalalau Trail. Turkey’s Lycian Way. When you hear the phrase “world’s best coastal walk” England’s frigid waters and dour clifftops hardly spring to mind.

That may soon be set to change. As The Lonely Planet reported yesterday, “The entire English coastline will become accessible for the first time when the England Coast Path National Trail is completed this year; offering hikers, campers, swimmers and wildlife lovers access to the world’s longest walking route.”

At 4,500kms long, the England Coast Path will be the world’s longest continuous track, connecting the entire English coastline through a network of public trails. Assuming an elevation and descent of roughly 100m throughout, hiking calculators estimate this journey would take about 1,120 hours of walking (think: 94 days of plodding from 6am to 6pm, with no breaks), to complete.

That’s one heck of an afternoon ramble.

Anyway, the idea was sparked after a 2010 campaign spearheaded by Natural England and local walking charities, who worked with government and local landowners to open up England’s littoral region. Not only does the path link and enhance existing routes (as The Lonely Planet reports, “with signposted trails that are safe from tides and difficult terrain”), it also opens up access (while reducing the threat of erosion) to beaches, dunes and cliffs.

Natural England stats reveal 29.1 million walking trips were made over a six-month period in 2019. That figure is expected to grow once the path is complete, with Natural England’s Chair, Tony Juniper, announcing in a statement: “Our flagship England Coast Path is taking people through some of the finest and most important landscape in England, opening up historic landmarks, natural wonders and breathtaking scenery, enabling more visitors to experience, recognise and value the benefits of our environment.”

As a result, 2021 (assuming we’ve fought off coronavirus by then) will be the ‘Year of the English Coast’ with a promising programme of events: people can register for beach clean-ups, seafood feasts, art trail walks and a focus on sustainability.

So, whether you’re interested sightseeing the Jurassic coast, marvelling at the white cliffs of Dover, seeing seals in Newport or surfing in Cornwall, this walk could have something in it for you.
