Desert vistas that embarrass Mars. The Gran Torre. Tongue-punching empanadas. When you think of Chile you probably envision the Atacama and food spicier than a teenage meme lord. What you may not know, however, is that Chile is a springboard to the rest of South America, and that there are soon going to be daily flights running from Sydney, Australia, straight to its heart.Per the Qantas media release: “Qantas has… announced Sydney-Santiago as the next route for its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, with the national carrier also adding an additional three return flights per week between the two cities.”This means that from late June 2020, customers travelling between Sydney and Santiago will experience the Dreamliner’s next generation Economy, Premium Economy and Business cabins, as the more efficient 787-9 Dreamliner gradually replaces the Boeing 747 aircraft on Qantas’ international network by the end of 2020.Qantas currently has eight 787-9s in its fleet, with a further six arriving from October 2019, bringing the total fleet of Dreamliners to 14 in the second half of 2020.Qantas International Acting CEO Naren Kumar said this would prove an exciting change for customers travelling to the South American gateway.
“Our Dreamliner has been extremely popular with customers, so we’re pleased to give those travelling between Australia and South America the opportunity to experience it.”
The additional flights will increase flights on the route from four per week to daily, which will inflate the number of passengers travelling to Chile from Australia each year by 20,000.Qantas is now also the only airline to offer Premium Economy between Sydney and Santiago, which the airline says “is very popular on all flights.”Why did they make the change? Numbers, numbers, numbers: “We launched our direct service from Sydney to Santiago in 2012 and the demand from Australians and South Americans has given us confidence to add even more flights on the route,” Kumar said.As to why numbers are increasing? Although Qantas might have you believe it’s down to the anti-jetlag features of their new jets, the reality is that both Chile and South America are growing in popularity with Australian and international travellers (Chile was named The Lonely Planet’s top destination to visit in 2018 and, as The Santiago Times reports, it has seen record numbers of visitors in recent years). If it’s on your bucket list to be among them, you might also like to know that beyond Santiago, customers can connect to LATAM Airlines with Qantas codeshare services to six countries and 14 destinations across South America, including Rio De Janeiro and Sao Paulo in Brazil; Bogota, Colombia; Guayaquil, Ecuador; Lima, Peru; and Montevideo, Uruguay. Also significant is that Qantas’ Dreamliner features the latest version of the airline’s Business Suite, nicknamed “mini First Class” by some frequent flyers, as well as a significantly improved Economy seat with extra storage compartments and more legroom. If you end up going, here are a few must-do activities:
- Eat at a traditional steakhouse
- See the lakes of the Patagonia national park
- Visit the Orongo Ceremonial Village
- Climb an active volcano
- Sail alongside glaciers and see the fjords
- Hike in the Atacama desert
- Eat your body weight in empanadas

From ‘Super Bad’ to ‘Pineapple Express’ and even the shocker that was ‘Sausage Party’, Seth Rogen has had no shortage of attention as this generation’s Adam Sandler.Okay, that may be a bit harsh, but we can’t take away from the fact that the 37-year-old Candian actor dresses a hell of a lot better than Sandler or any other comedic actor for that matter. His latest proof came last week when he stepped out at the premiere of ‘Good Boys’ in California last week rocking a sweet dark teal suit paired to slick 3D geometric print polo shirt with a contrasting black collar. It was a simple summer suit which was rightfully devoid of any accessories such as pocket squares or even a fancy watch. Rogen simply let the bold suit colour and sharp shirt design do most of the talking. Backing that up in the shoe department was a pair of black leather boots which helped Rogen bump up his perceived height. Also, check out the much slender physique Rogen is rocking these days. It’s a great complement to his style of suiting and menswear. The classic stoner’s face is still there but beyond that there’s an aura of a man who’s in control of his life.
If there’s one thing to take away from Rogen’s newfound fame in the men’s style space, it’s his penchant for doing things differently. Think Jeff Goldblum who is able to take the most eclectic style moves in menswear before making it his own signature look. Rogen might not be there yet but if he keeps this up he may soon have his own style of menswear to back up his unique comedic style.

First-class is an adult playpen of delight. But while everyone knows getting upgraded from Economy to Business is a get-out-of-hell-free card, most are unaware that getting upgraded from Business to First takes you into another one of Lucifer’s realms. How so? This excerpt from “Class Struggles” – an article in The Economist’s sister publication 1843 – shows why.
“On another from Dubai to Vienna I was not just upgraded to first class, but granted my own mini-cabin complete with personal valet. I sat there in a state of delirium: eight hours in hell had been transformed into a paradise of houris and sherbet – or at least perfectly mixed Virgin Marys and an infinite supply of nuts.”
So far so bourgeois. But flying first-class is not all caviar and cake:
“After a while my valet’s attentions began to pall: every few minutes he knocked on my door to ask if I needed anything. He brought hot towels and sacks of nuts and gallons of Virgin Mary refills. It was overwhelming: rather than relaxing over my meal and a film, I had to constantly fend off my valet’s unwanted attentions. But since he was such a charming fellow, I didn’t have the nerve to tell him to leave me alone. As we landed I entertained myself by studying the elaborate handset on my seat. It was only then that I noticed that the button marked ‘immediate service required’ had been left in the ‘on’ position.”
Alas, The Economist’s Mr Wooldridge is not the only one to impale himself on the Pointy End of the plane. In fact, Luc Wiesman, our Editor-in-Chief here at D’Marge has had a number of interesting experiences of his own.On one first-class journey from Doha to Sydney, he recalls being mildly bemused that first-class passengers pay more than double the money for what is essentially a business class cabin with slightly fewer people and slightly bigger seats.Plus – even if you ensure a layout difference from business class by booking one of Emirates’ or Singapore Airlines’ fully private first-class suites – it still seems a strange decision to shell out more than 200% more (for reference, a return Emirates business-class ticket from Sydney to Dubai costs about $7,000, while a first-class one costs about $20,000) for amenities which are only luxurious relative to the other sections of the plane (think about it: you wouldn’t consider a four by three metre room – no matter how private – extravagant back on the ground, would you).Anyway – getting back on route – another first-class stress point Luc points out is food. How so? Well, although first-class has a few stand out pieces (hello, caviar), unless you’re Matt Preston, you’re not going to find a difference in quality between the staple menu items of First and Business, which leaves you wondering if you will ever get to grips with this world of opulence. The staff are also much the same (if more attentive, which – as Mr Wooldridge’s tale reveals – is not always a good thing) and – even more insidiously – your experience (if you’re not a first-class ‘regular’ with endless greenbacks to burn) will likely put the rest of your holiday to shame.RELATED: How My First Ever Business Class Flight Ruined Me For LifeBut that all pales to one final faux pas: greed. Knowing this is the only chance they will get to luxuriate at such heights, it is common for business-class transplants to overindulge in first-class’ culinary, alcoholic and entertainment delights and – if travelling for business – arrive at their destination in need of a digestive tea and a nap more so than a high powered meeting. The takeaway? Eat (and book) wisely.

This story was originally published on Stockhead.Digital speaker maker Audio Pixels was “extremely pleased” to provide an update to shareholders on Monday on the development of its digital speaker, which has been 13 years in the making.Founded in 2006, Audio Pixels (ASX:AKP) calls itself “a world leader in digital loudspeaker technologies”, backed by “exceptional multidisciplinary scientific research, design, and production capabilities”.But, despite a healthy market cap of nearly $500 million and shares that peaked at $19 yesterday, it still has no product. That has been due to a frustrating delay in creating its core technology — a silicon “wafer” which uses MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) technology. As Stockhead journalist Rachel Williamson wrote in April last year, those pesky wafers finally arrived, nearly a year after the company had hoped to take delivery, amid manufacturing delays. But by May of this year, development had been suspended yet again thanks to “a rare system glitch in the prober” that resulted in the destruction of the wafer. Now the company, which failed to make any money in the June quarter but remained well-funded with $8.6 million in the bank thanks to low costs, says that a new batch of wafers “have been validated to resolve the known fabrication and handling issues”.That now puts Audio Pixels back on track to deliver the product intrepid shareholders have been waiting ever so long for, although “considerations concerning preservation of intellectual property” meant the company could not expand on the specific next steps. However, it assured them it was a “critical milestone”.“However, management seeks to assure its shareholders that the relative nuanced changes are now being incorporated in the production process with minimal disruption to the fabrication pipeline,” Fred Bart, chairman, said in a letter.“Achieving a reliable fabrication process for the MEMS transducer has also enabled the company to shift resources toward efforts involving larger scale wafer production as well as the commercial packaging of the devices.”Stockhead has reached out to the company for comment on when, if ever, we’ll see the speakers, which promise revolutionary sound quality from even a handheld device.Stockhead covers emerging ASX companies and investment opportunities. The transitionary period between boy and man is an intriguing time and Nicholas Hoult is living proof. No, we’re not talking about puberty but rather the evolving style of a young man.He was once a boy and now he’s a man, and he’s got the watch to prove it. 29-year-old English actor Nicholas Hoult was recently spotted in Los Angeles rocking a rather nonchalant outfit for summer.A simple black t-shirt, black trousers and a pair of Nike Air Jordans in black. Not a bad combination but standard fair for a man in his twenties until you draw your attention to his wrist.Wrapped around Hoult’s wrist is one of the most elegant timepiece going around today in the form of Jaeger-Lecoultre’s Reverso, a classic timepiece design which dates all the way back to the 1930s.
It’s an interesting watch which found its roots as a piece designed to withstand polo matches between British Army officers in India. This is where the case’s reversing concept was born — a back that flips to the front to fully protect the face from possible mallet strokes. In Hoult’s summer wardrobe case, it’s one of the most unlikely watch and outfit pairings as the Reverso is often used in formal wear. This is definitely a hard look to pull off and almost comes across as ‘this is the only watch I had on the way out’, but it somehow works and we love it. It’s elegant, masculine and athletic all at the same time and this can be attributed to the watch’s pink gold case and black leather strap.
The piece also appears to be the Reverso Classic Large Duoface Small Seconds, a model which includes hours, minutes and seconds functions on the front face and a cool second time zone on the rear with 24-hour display. And the price of athletic elegance? $20,100 from Jaeger-LeCoultre.
Hoult has pulled off a Jaeger-LeCoultre with a 70s suit in the past and today it’s all about the t-shirt. Not the most conventional look you’ll find but if you can get your hands on this timepiece, then why not? We rate it.
