Thematic crypto ETFs would allow investors to gain exposure to specific sectors of the digital asset market, opening up new potential for massive growth, but are thematic ETFs for crypto really a good idea? Investment expert James Whelan answers all the burning questions.
Aussie investors love ETFs, especially thematic ETFs.
Thematic ETFs provide investors exposure to broad swathes of niche industries, such as clean energy, space technology, cybersecurity, video games, cryptocurrency and other major market trends.
In November last year BetaShare’s Crypto ETF (ASX: CRYP) smashed records for the largest first-day ETF investment ever, racking up more than AU$42 million by close-of-day. This was five times larger than any day-one investment that came before it.
While investors may be happy for now with their exposure to cryptocurrency through CRYP, which invests mostly in publicly listed crypto exchanges such as Coinbase and Bitcoin miners like Marathon Holdings, this only scratches the surface of the investment potential in the crypto industry.
Despite the “less-than-ideal” market conditions of late, the cryptocurrency industry itself has seen enormous amounts of development and reached new levels of maturity over the past few months, forging clearer distinctions between different types of digital assets.
A thematic ETF in crypto would provide investors with exposure to these emerging, niche sectors that have grown to include GameFi, DeFi, Staking and many, many more still-growing areas of the market.
Are Thematic Crypto ETFs a Good Idea?
James Whelan, an Investment Manager at VFS Group in Sydney told DMARGE that crypto ETFS could be a good idea but there’s a series of factors that need to occur before successful implementation.
“Eventually I do believe cryptocurrencies will have thematic ETFs. What has to happen first is for crypto to be determined as some kind of financial product. From that time it becomes easier to include as a product in discussions with clients, but keep in mind – this puts aside all conversations on validity,” he said.
“Whether Bitcoin or Ethereum have a purpose is as much a moot conversation now as whether some tech stonks are relevant. The problem now is being able to actually talk to clients about them,” Whelan added.
Acknowledging the dire state of the broader market right now, Whelan stated, “there are some crypto ETFs at the moment but they’re either only investing in futures or they’re…troubled.”

And crypto ETFs are troubled. BetaShares record-breaking CRYP is currently down nearly 75% since its inception on November 4 last year, as a result of the wider tech and crypto downturn.
The Upsides and Downsides to Crypto ETFs
When asked about the upsides that may come with thematic crypto ETFs, Whelan stated:
“Being able to access crypto on the same platform you use does make life easier for people managing money and people managing their own. Having your ‘legitimate’ investments on one regulated platform and your crypto on a platform that sits aside from that is a pain,” he said.
“But it’s not a new pain. The key thing is knowing that the product you buy has been reviewed by regulators and trades on a regulated exchange,” Whelan adds.
“The key downside is that it possibly takes away some of the ‘edge’ of some coins. Don’t forget crypto started as a libertarian rebellion against the existing monetary system which allowed the GFC. For its future to be in the hands of that same authorities may see some of that rebellious shine lost,” Whelan cautions.
Whelan says that he personally believes thematic crypto ETFs could prove to be quite a good idea.
“I have a belief that there’s a variety of products to suit everyone and there’s a host of clients who want (and need) crypto on their portfolios.”
For and Against Thematic Crypto ETFs
Whelan says there are many reasons for and against thematic crypto ETFs, but concludes the digital asset market is still very, very risky.
“The simple reason for investing in a crypto ETF is to gain leverage to the upside in a coin. It could be to take advantage of new trends or uses for various chains that are created. It could be to (gasp!) hedge a portfolio,” he said.
“There was a time very recently when you could see Bitcoin taking the place of gold. All the conditions were right for gold to rally but Bitcoin received all the flow. Maybe one day it can sit alongside gold as a true inflation hedge. Easy access to it on regulated exchanges will assist that,” he said.
But ultimately, Whelan still thinks the biggest problem facing crypto is the fact that it doesn’t really exist.
“Main reason against it? It’s invisible computer money.”

The idea that “men are dogs” and “only think about sex” is a stereotype that has plagued the male population for decades. But, some unearthed research has found that women are just as interested in sex, and could in fact be more likely to cheat.
There has been a long held belief that men in relationships are going to be more likely to cheat than their partner – especially if those men have a certain face shape, according to science – but there is now some new research that suggests otherwise.
The research, cited by the New York Post and expanded upon by Wednesday Martin, author of Untrue, a book that focuses on female infidelity, suggests that women have just as much of a burning libido as men, if not more.
RELATED: Microcheating Is The Modern Dating Sin You Are Probably Guilty Of
Martin, who interviewed sociologists, sex researchers and anthropologists for her book said, “the new research is correcting false notions that women have lesser libidos, that women are more naturally monogamous and that it’s easier for women to partner in life.”
“Women don’t like sex less [than men], but they do get bored of sexual sameness.”
Indeed, while it doesn’t necessarily state that women are categorically more likely to cheat, the reasons behind their sinful temptations do differ from those of men.
Martin adds that men may indeed have a higher level of spontaneous sexual desire – hence the stereotype phrase ‘men only think about sex,’ but she also said “women take the lead for responsive or triggered desire.”
What’s the difference? Martin explains, “Spontaneous desire is when you suddenly think, ‘it would be nice to have sex.'”
“Responsive or triggered desire occurs when something suggests the idea of sex to you – you’re watching or reading something, or a partner initiates a sexual encounter – and you get turned on.”
“For that type of desire, women’s libidos are every bit as strong as men’s. We’ve internalised this idea that men are the randier sex and that’s untrue.”

Alicia M. Walker, as assistant professor of sociology at Missouri State University who also studies infidelity, has examined the sociological reasons both men and women might cheat. Writing for Psychology Today, Walker said “results of surveys conducted by websites found most folks who cheat fail to be caught and most intend to stay married.”
“So, if folks aren’t cheating to mate-shop and they aren’t cheating to exact revenge, then what is going on?”
Men are looking for love, women are looking for passion
To find out, Alicia interviewed 46 men between the ages of 27 and 70, in the United States who had used the Ashley Madison website to find an affair partner. She found that, while these men did engage in sexual relations with other women, “what they really wanted from those relationships had little to do with sex.”
She adds, “we think men cheat for sex and women cheat for love and attention. In my previous work, the vast majority of the women reported sexual gratification as their motivation for affairs.”
“They approached their affairs pragmatically and with a clear purpose.”
“Conversely, the men with whom I spoke sought to outsource the emotional intimacy, emotional connection, and emotional support of their marriages.”
The takeaway, then, is that women are the ones more likely to cheat if the sex in their relationship isn’t good enough or they’re bored, whereas men are more likely to have an affair if they’re emotionally unhappy in a relationship.
These findings also, therefore, beg the question, why does society and the media regularly generalise men as being sexual deviants? Instagram accounts such as @violetclair, for example, exist to empower women and to help console them through the tricky world of dating.
But occasionally, posts will paint men to be the ‘bad guy’ and receive thousands of comments from women all in agreement and essentially saying “all men are pigs.” But this just isn’t the case.
However, all this research has taken place in the United States. To get a deeper understanding of the infidelity landscape in Australia, DMARGE reached out to relationship expert Samantha Jayne.
Samantha says, “I don’t think your gender determines if you chat or not. It ultimately comes down to a person’s values or integrity and I believe someone’s personality type as to whether they will cheat.”
She elaborates on that personality type by saying, “If someone is more driven by variety and adventure (gets bored easily) and had more partners than most, in addition to struggling emotionally to connect on a deeper level, then they are more likely to cheat.”
“Whereas some people, no matter how much temptation they have, they just won’t.”
“Genders are now less of a factor because there is a fusion of roles. Traditionally, the man would be the provider and the woman at home would be softer and more sensitive. But today, anything goes.”
As for the reasons one might cheat, Samantha agrees with the research by claiming it to be “unmet needs.” These needs, of course, could be either sexual or emotional, and this is where the research found men and women can indeed differ.
RELATED: Women Reveal The Subtle Cheating Signs Men Need To Know
Samantha does add, however, that “for serial cheaters there is no reason, they just do it out or habit or entitlement.”
Can an adulterous relationship be saved?
So, what happens if you get cheated on, or even if you cheat on your partner? Going off the research, if a man cheats for emotional reasons, it suggest he is unhappy in the relationship and so may want it to end anyway. Women, meanwhile, may still love their partner but just need a little more action under the sheets.
Samantha tells DMARGE, “Infidelity is very difficult to come back from. It takes commitment to rebuild trust and sometimes the damage can’t be repaired. It is up to the individual as to whether they can move on and it’s up to the couple to work as a team, ideally with professional help.”
“There is no right or wrong, it’s all dependent on the circumstances.”
RELATED: Should I Leave My Significant Other? Here Are The Subtle Signs It’s Over
“If it’s a very new relationship then it might be best to move on because if someone is willing to cheat during the honeymoon phase then they are not a keeper. But if the couple have been together forever, then it might be able to be salvaged with the right support.”
Ultimately, Samantha says, “an emotional connection is what keeps couples together. Couples that play together, stay together, so be sure to have regular date nights.”
“Talking and listening to each others’ needs and being supportive, as well as providing space to miss each other can help. Always try to keep the spark going.”

A ski helmet is, without doubt, the most important item you need to have with you when you’re going skiing or snowboarding. While it’s also imperative you arm yourself with a jacket, some gloves, and some goggles, a ski helmet is the only thing that can truly minimise your chances of injury.
The majority of resorts won’t let you step foot into your boots without having one, but you’ll often see that one guy who thinks he’s invincible. And of course, if you want to dabble in a spot of après-ski, then you’re definitely going to want to wear a ski helmet for the inevitable tipsy slalom back to the bottom of the slopes.
He’s not, and neither are you. So investing in some serious head protection is absolutely vital and should really be your first port of call when stocking up on ski and snowboard gear.
In this ski helmets story…
What to look for in a ski helmet
There are countless construction methods, materials, and technologies used within ski helmets to help keep your noggin safe, along with other third-party products that add to their protectiveness, comfort, and ease of use. But for the best ski helmet, you ought to look out for the following features:
MIPS
MIPS stands for Multi-directional Impact Protection System. It’s been developed by brain surgeons and scientists, and is an added layer fitted to helmets to help reduce rotational forces applied to your head in crashes. When you fall off your skis, you’re likely to fall at an angle.

Ski helmets that don’t have MIPS will rotate with your head, which can apply potentially damaging forces on your brain. What MIPS does is allow the helmet to move by up to 15mm during an impact, absorbing more of the energy and transferring it around the rest of the surface area to take the stress away from your brain.
Not all ski helmet manufacturers have adopted MIPS, but the ones that have will rock a yellow logo, so be sure to look out for this.
In-Mould Construction
In-Mould is a form of building method that sees an inner foam layer fused directly to the outer helmet layer. Some manufacturers have their own various ways of referring to it but they all relate to the same thing.
In-Mould ski helmets are tough-as-nails, being highly resistant to cracks from impacts and they allow for larger vents to be integrated too, improving airflow and keeping your head cool.
Fitting & Adjustment
It should go without saying that a ski helmet will only be truly effective if it is well-fitted to your head. You may need to try on a few different models to find one that works for you, and much of that will depend on the adjustment system it provides. Ski helmets come in sizes such as S/M and M/L, to cater for a range of head sizes, but then offer an adjustable inner layer to secure it in place.
WATCH: YouTube account Sierra explains how to properly fit a ski helmet
Different manufacturers may use their own in-house systems. The brand K2, for example, has its own ‘K2 Dialed’ system. Others, such as Smith and Oakley, have adopted the BOA Fit system. This third-party system is used on snowboard boots and ski helmets and allows the wearer to turn a dial to tighten or loosen the fit. Once you’ve found a fit that works, you simply push the dial in to hold it in place (and push to release it to make changes).
To find the perfect fit of ski helmet for your head, it’s best to measure the circumference of your head at the widest part. If you’re taking the measurement in centimetres, divide the number you get by 2.54 to get the measurement in inches. You should then find ski helmet manufacturers will list the size of head each helmet will fit. This will usually be a broad measurement that will be appropriate for a small range of head sizes.
Chin Strap & Fastening
With your helmet fitted snugly to your head, all that’s left to do is fasten the chin strap. With thick ski gloves on, this can sometimes be tricky, especially if your helmet has a conventional clasp fastening. Ski helmet manufacturers are now turning to magnets to make the process much easier.

The most common system – and arguably one of the best – you’re likely to see, comes from Fidlock, masters of magnetic fastenings. Helmets with Fidlock buckles can be operated with one hand and without looking. All you need to do is slide the opposing pieces together and they’ll remain securely in place until you need to take it off.
Ski Helmet FAQs
Yes. You can put your ski helmet in your carry-on bags when travelling through airports. Others can also get away by clipping them outside their cabin bags. To know your ski helmet size, use a fabric tape measure around the circumference of your head, about 2.5 cm above your ears and eyebrows. Absolutely not. A bicycle helmet is not designed for skiing or snowboarding. You must wear the proper gear to protect yourself from injuries in case of accidents. Can you take a ski helmet as hand luggage?

If the drama around Don’t Worry Darling wasn’t bad enough, it seems as if Harry Styles has just spat in his co-star Chris Pine’s lap – in front of the entire world’s cameras.
The two actors have been the talk of the town at the 79th Venice International Film Festival for the screening of their latest project, Don’t Worry Darling: a psychological thriller directed by Olivia Wilde (who Styles is currently dating, by the way).
Don’t Worry Darling has already been the subject of a lot of drama, which has only grown since Venice. Notably, Chris Pine was seen zoning out and acting very dismayed during an interview he and Harry had about the film earlier this week – a moment that’s already been meme-d to death on Twitter.
Now, another crazy moment between the pair has been captured, with Styles appearing to spit in Pine’s lap as the pair sit down for the screening of their film. Bizarre.
WATCH Harry Styles spit at Chris Pine below.
Pine does a proper double take and everything! It’s so weird! Is this Styles getting back at Pine for his behaviour during their interview? Or is Harry just Watermelon Sugar high?
Or is this much ado about nothing? According to DMARGE editor and English hooligan James Booth, “spitting is more common in Britain.” We’re not so sure.
In between Shia LaBeouf’s firing from the film, Olivia Wilde breaking up with Jason Sudeikis to date Styles during the film’s shooting, leading woman Florence Pugh’s snubbing of Venice and now Harry Style’s spit, Don’t Worry Darling has definitely given us plenty to worry about…

These can include being incredibly affordable, they obviously don’t take up much space and so can be covered up easily if needed, or your small tattoo could be what is often referred to as a “shit tattoo,” in that it has no meaning and could be a completely random doodle.
Owing to their size, a small tattoo can be inked pretty much anywhere on your body. Your hand, leg, chest or forearm, for example.
If you know you want to get a small tattoo but you’re lacking inspiration, then we’ve rounded up some of our favourite small tattoo designs that could help point you in the right direction.

Harry Styles‘ ever-evolving aesthetic has moved into an exciting and strange era: his wine mum era.
The 28-year-old singer/songwriter and actor, who’s known for his eclectic fashion sense, is currently swanning about at the 79th Venice International Film Festival for the screening of his latest project, Don’t Worry Darling: a psychological thriller directed by Olivia Wilde, Styles’ current partner.
Styles, who stars alongside Florence Pugh in the film, was also easily the star of the film’s photocall yesterday, pulling up to the Venice Cinema Palace by boat wearing a striped jacket, neckerchief, tank top and oversized sunglasses – all from his collaborative Gucci capsule, HA HA HA, produced in collaboration with Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele.
It’s a bit Fred from Scooby-Doo, it’s a bit Elton John, it’s a bit wine mum out for a cheeky Aperol Spritz in the sun… We bloody love it. Harry’s gone and done it again.

Something you might have noticed about Harry’s jacket is that it appears as if he’s forgotten to take the suit tag off the sleeve – a classic men’s fashion faux pas. But don’t be fooled. It’s actually an intentional stylistic flourish that Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele has long featured in his menswear collections.
RELATED: Gucci Is Making The Most Common Men’s Fashion Fail… Fashionable
We think it actually adds to Harry’s artfully dishevelled look here – like he’s just thrown an outfit together at the last minute for the red carpet. There’s an Italian word for that sort of thing, actually: sprezzatura.
If being feted at Venice wasn’t enough of an ego boost for Harry, his latest album, Harry’s House, debuted atop the UK and US charts, becoming his second number-one album and the fastest-selling album of 2022 so far. He’s also got his own collaborative Gucci capsule coming out in October, too. Must be nice.

Qantas is allowing passengers to pay to keep the seat next to them empty, “for their personal comfort,” as part of a trial program called: “Neighbour free.”
Qantas is now giving passengers the chance to pay for something you used to have to cross your fingers and pray for: an empty seat next to you. The program is reportedly being trialled for the next six weeks on several domestic routes in Australia. Prices for ensuring no one sits next to you (on one side; you can’t book out a row of three) start from around $30.
Australian Frequent Flyer reports that the trial will initially unfurl on seven Australian domestic routes, including Sydney-Gold Coast.
The way it works is that passengers booked into Economy Class on eligible flights will be invited to give their neighbour the flick by email, around 48 hours before departure. The service is only to be offered on flights that aren’t chock full.

You are then able to accept the invitation up to an hour before the flight’s scheduled time, by hitting the link in the email and punching in your credit card details (you can’t use a flight credit or TravelPass).
You can only make one Neighbour Free reservation for each segment of your booking and Neighbour Free cannot be guaranteed as seats may need to be changed for operational, safety or security reasons, even after boarding the aircraft, Qantas says.

According to Qantas, “Neighbour Free refers to the seat space only and cannot be used for infant seating or to place items such as carry-on baggage, or musical instruments.” Qantas also says that “Additional Qantas Points and Status Credits will not be earned on Neighbour Free reservations.”
Still: we’re very much fans of the new trial, and hope it ends up expanding.
