Fitness Expert Reveals The Secret To Getting Ripped In Your Twenties
Fitness Expert Reveals The Secret To Getting Ripped In Your Twenties

Young man, it’s time we had a chat. The frivolous twenties is a decade filled with (mis)adventure, experimentation and growing into a man. On this journey the twenty-something human body is faced with a number of adversaries, often self-inflicted and totally avoidable. But that’s what being young is all about right? We spoke to two experts in the health and fitness field to tackle the pressing issue of what often happens to your body during the twenties and how you can look after it to ensure it kicks on trouble-free well beyond your thirties.

Set A Routine & Stick To It

It’s not our intention to be motherly at D’Marge but when a qualified fitness expert stresses the need to stick to a game plan, you should probably pay attention. Jordan Ponder who is the founder of Transform Health in Sydney says that the biggest concern for men in their twenties is balancing a social life with regular exercise. Don’t be fooled by thinking your body can take the beating since it’s in its prime.“You bounce back but that’s because the stress isn’t as high,” says Ponder. “Things will start to take a toll in your late twenties as stress and responsibilities increase”. Think buying property, taking on the daily pressures of work and managing relationships. When it comes to keeping the twenties body in top shape, it’s vital to exercise every day for at least an hour with sufficient intensity. This can come in the form of a gym session, a run or a swim. This will ensure that energy levels remain consistent at a time where a man’s metabolism slows down big time in their late twenties.Put simply, “put in place a routine that you’re accountable for. PT meetings, personal classes you’ve booked in you can’t miss, Tuesday cycling…being held accountable through routine is important”.

Boost Your Diet

Keeping a check of your twenties diet will ensure that your body has all the nutrients it needs to boost your immune system. One big misconception guys in this age bracket have is their degree of mortality.A healthy and balanced diet is all it takes to ensure that easily avoidable sicknesses can be kept at bay. “Dietary wise, have breakfast in the morning everyday. Something you can make yourself as opposed to eating out which is becoming a trend these days,” says Ponder.“Also limit alcohol intake to two days per week and don’t allow social drinks to pop up more than they need to.”

Keep Your Mental Health In Check

Dr. Zac Turner of the Privée Clinic says that of all of the male age groups, men in their twenties are most likely to die of suicide, car accidents or preventable injuries. It’s paramount that men in this age group speak up when they’re struggling mentally. Doing so will lead to a longer and healthier life, according to Turner.“When it comes to men in their twenties, don’t be afraid to ask each other and friends how they’re doing mentally. Blowing things off with an ‘it’ll be alright’ attitude is one way to see the breakdown in mental health”.Try Headspace to keep that brain of yours in check. It’s easy to follow guided meditation.

Choose The Right Kind Of Alcohol

Believe or not, young men will drink copious amounts in their twenties and there’s a right and wrong way to do it. When you’re entering the professional workforce or trendy entrepreneurial scene in your twenties, it’s a common fact that business tends to be done with the help of alcohol.“For young people, try drink a bit less of the cheap alcohol and spend it on something slightly more expensive; alcohol that’s distilled better and has less preservatives like 100% agave tequila. Good tequila is the least processed alcohol so it doesn’t leave you with a hangover”.“At this stage it’s about getting smarter. Learn how to recover better. A lot of people spend this decade getting written off on a weekly basis. Work out when you can and can’t get written off and find some hangover cures that work for you.”If you’re prone to a hangover the best thing to have in the morning is eggs. Taurine also helps to reduce nausea and headaches.

Self Risk Management

A big part of maintaining one’s health in their twenties is about managing self-risk. With the discovery of drugs and alcohol for the first time during this decade, there will no doubt be an increased chance of injury or death.“It seems we’re higher risk takers in this time period,” says Dr. Zac Turner. His pointers for assessing self-risks in your twenties are the following:

  • Putting systems in place so you cant take risks or as many risks
  • Know what drugs you’re taking. Self test drug kits are free or ridiculously cheap and you only need a fraction of a pill to get it tested to determine whether it’s MDMA or something that could potentially end your life
  • If you’re going to take the risk of doing hallucinogenic drugs, do it in a controlled environment or somewhere where you can’t harm yourself

Pay Attention To Changes In Your Body

Most men in their twenties will have a body that’s in its prime. If you’re finding that your immune system is weak during this time, you probably fall into the group of those who work themselves tirelessly before taking a break overseas. It’s here where sickness comes on. In other words, you may have a young and resilient body but you can’t escape sleep and rest. The body requires it to repair, fight viruses and recuperate. One other area of monitoring your body’s changes is during the introduction of protein into the body.“Not thinking every protein supplement is a quick supplement is crucial,” says Turner.“Reading the back of protein powders and drinks is a must because they’re full of shit for the most part. We age more because we have a high protein diet.”When it comes to skin, the point has long been played out in Australia. Sun burns in your younger years, especially during the teenage years, massively pre-disposes men to melanomas later in life.“Far more than other years, this is when you’re spending a majority of the time out in the sun,” says Turner. On the topic of checking one’s prostate during this decade, experts say that it’s not yet necessary. Instead young men should be asking questions about their family history and chatting about who was sick, when they were sick and why they died.“If you have an uncle, a grandfather and someone else who died of bowel cancer, you should probably speak to a GP about it. Work out what things have gone wrong in the family and whether you’re prone to diabetes, cancer and even baldness. It’s all about preventing for the future.”“Know about your body but don’t try to diagnose it via Google.”RELATED: These Crucial Exercises Will Ensure You Get Bigger Quicker

Russell Westbrook Will Steal Your Wife With The World's Most Expensive Skater Outfit
Russell Westbrook Will Steal Your Wife With The World's Most Expensive Skater Outfit

He’s not the NBA’s king of fashion for nothing. Overnight Russell Westbrook took to Virgil Abloh’s first Louis Vuitton menswear showing at Paris Fashion Week in a casual street-inspired look that followed suit with David Beckham’s low-key extravagant wardrobe from earlier this week.

Westbrook paired his insanely expensive Rolex (which is POA but starts from AU$44,150 for the non-diamond version) with checkered flag shorts from FUCT SSDD and the latest casual monochrome kicks from Jumpman23. The bezel diamond-studded yellow gold Rolex Day-Date President timepiece elevated the skate look to insane levels which was further polished off with a black tee featuring a large hound print from Honor the Gift.

Even eyewear wasn’t left out of the equation with Westbrook going for circular gold framed sunglasses to accompany the Rolex and a gold Cartier Love Bracelet.

Would we suggest you try this look at home? Probably not in the chance that you might damage your bling at the local skate park. If you’re rolling in Russell Westbrook kind of money though then why not.

We may suggest a more grown-up look though which pairs perfectly with the Rolex.

Europe Is Banning Memes Because Europeans Don't Like To Have Fun
Europe Is Banning Memes Because Europeans Don't Like To Have Fun

Before the Facebook-Cambridge Analytica privacy scandal, Russian hackers taking over your webcam was the only thing you had to worry about online. Now, however, you have to contend with the fact that Zuckerberg has a cookie collection devoted exclusively to your every fetish…

The joys of bachelorhood.

Anyway, opinion is divided over the future of copyright and privacy laws in the EU, and members of the EU Legal Affairs Committee just voted to make them stricter. The stakes are high: according to EuroNews, “At issue is the modernisation of copyright rules for the digital age.”

The idea behind the initiative, which has been debated for two years, is to enable artists and authors to be more fairly remunerated for their work—and to keep social media giants in check.

“Nowdays the main problem is that user product content platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, Dailymotion, Vimeo, etc are not playing fair,” Véronique Desbrosses, General Manager of the European Grouping of Societies of Authors and Composers told EuroNews.

“They are using loopholes in the law not to remunerate creators and yet they have become the main route to access cultural content on the Internet.”

As you would expect, digital platforms are against the directive, “article 13,” which would require companies like Youtube and Facebook to remove content whose copyright they cannot verify.

“Article 13 is dangerous because it basically envisions that platforms have to block everything that people post that contains content that belongs to somebody else,” Anna Mazgal, Wikimedia’s EU Policy adviser, told EuroNews.

“We are worried about the vast majority of users that have the right to use somebody else’s content because they make parodies, because they make political commentary, because they quote.”

According to Reuters, this could mean the end for internet memes—which rely on the freedom of users to, “riff on other people’s photos, music or video.” Not only that, but some claim it could have the opposite effect to what the EU intends, eventually becoming just another tool to control and spy on users.

Green lawmaker at the European Parliament, Julia Reda, told Reuters the Commission’s decision would only benefit large media companies.

“The intentions may be good but the methods to address the issue are catastrophic and will hurt the people they want to protect.”

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales concurred, warning Reuters that filters, “Could create the basis for more invasive monitoring of all internet content, while new types of exclusive rights would limit the ways that people share information on the web.”

The Difference Between Cheap & Expensive Whisky, Explained By A Whisky Expert
The Difference Between Cheap & Expensive Whisky, Explained By A Whisky Expert

Whisky is one of the most hotly contested spirits in the world right now but amongst all of the debate we sometimes forget that not everyone is a diehard whisky connoisseur. So for those who are just starting to get acquainted with the concept of whisky or those who just need a little reminding, we’ve done some research to help you understand the distinction between cheap and expensive whisky. Joining us for this little guide on the factors that affect price is bonafide whisky enthusiast and founder of whisky blog Time for Whisky, Martin Eber.

Age Matters

Pick up a decent bottle of whisky and it’s likely the first thing your eyes will gravitate to is that number stamped on the label. As a mark of how long the whisky has been sitting in a cask for, the age can also affects the final price tag of the bottle.“An older whisky will generally cost more to produce, by way of the length of time required to age and store it, and the amount which evaporates over that time – they call this the ‘angels’ share’,” explains Eber. There are some points to heed though whether your whisky is labelled an ‘8-year-old’ or a ’70-year-old’.“Whilst this often results in a higher price tag, that doesn’t always translate into a higher quality whisky.”

Crafting Quality

This brings us to the complex world of whisky quality. The formula for making whisky is simple in theory (Grain + Yeast + Water = Whisky), but it’s the variation of these constituents paired with the ageing process that ultimately defines a distinct flavour profile. As such, the quality and hence the cost of a particular whisky is often determined by these factors:

  • Temperature and weather: The rate of whisky ageing is significantly affected by the external climate. Warmer temperatures yield a faster ageing process which can take a fraction of the time compared to those aged in Scottish distilleries. Faster production and higher output can in turn make a whisky more affordable
  • Water quality: Different water source locations will yield different flavour profiles of whisky. The more exotic the water source, the more expensive the final product. As an example, some of Japan’s top distilleries source their water from the country’s most pristine locations – virgin snow which melts and flows down a mountain before being filtered through thousand-year-old granite rocks can make all the difference to a whisky’s quality (if not marketing strategy)
  • Storage: This is an often overlooked aspect that can affect the price of a whisky. The longer the ageing process, the longer a storage space for the next product needs to be taken up (i.e. limited production capacity). Think of it like rent but for bottles oh whisky with the final bill passed onto the buyer
  • Casks: And then we get to the world of casks which is an art in itself. At this stage you’re looking at the types of wood used in constructing the cask which can range from Spanish oak, American oak and Japanese Mizunara just to name a few. Different woods come with different compositions where some are more porous than others. This allows the spirits to penetrate deeper into the barrel (and vice versa) to create a distinct level of woodiness in the final flavour profile

Whilst all of these factors play into the designation of ‘cheap’ or ‘expensive’ whisky, Martin Eber says that it’s not always consistent.“There are excellent 3-5 year-old whiskies on the market, especially in Australia, and average plus-40-year-old ones.”“Quality of cask has a lot to do with it. That said, when you come across a well-matured 20, 30, 40, 50, even 60-year-old whisky, it can be a thing of beauty.”Eber says that cheap whisky is usually affordable because it’s cheaper to mass produce.“Take for example a number of the cheaper blends available on shelves these days. They’ll often be young at 3-8 years-old and contain a lot of grain whisky as opposed to generally-higher-quality malt whisky.”“These whiskies are produced in significant volume, but that’s not to say they’re necessarily bad whiskies.”Eber notes that there are cheap standout whiskies like Monkey Shoulder which uses a blend of different malt whiskies that can achieve a decent taste without breaking the bank.

Provenance, Branding & Popularity

From this point onwards it’s all about the external factors that determine whether a whisky is cheap or expensive. Reputation from country of origin obviously plays a big part in the whisky game much like any other luxury brand.“Region has a lot to do with it, as does how much a company thinks they can get away with,” says Eber.“Take Japanese whisky, for example. Yes there are some excellent Japanese whiskies out there at the moment, but there’s also so much hype that we’re currently seeing many bottles wearing hugely inflated prices.”“Young, often average quality whiskies which are sold at well over their true worth, simply because they’re ‘Japanese’. Some of them aren’t technically even Japanese – a lot of them are actually distilled in Scotland and sold as Japanese whiskies.”

Fostering Rarity

Rarity flows on from what Eber has explained. With more hype comes more demand for limited product. The effects of this has more to do with conventional economics than the actual whisky itself. A perfect example of this phenomena is Japan’s largest and rarest whisky collection from Karuizawa which last year auctioned for a staggering US$600,000.The remaining 290 bottles are the only ones left in the world after the distillery closed its doors for good in 2001. Does this make it any better tasting than a decent and readily available Macallan from 2018? Probably not. But we’ll let the owners’ palates and possible pseudo-science decide that.

Investability Built In

This one doesn’t take much explanation. An expensive whisky will tend to appreciate in price and with age and every change of hand the price tag simply gets higher. A fine example of tangible exclusivity in the whisky world.

Packaging Makes A Difference

Beautifully crafted whisky cases simply add to the final price of the product. A cheaper whisky will never be housed in an elaborate case simply for the fact that the case will probably cost more to make than the whisky itself.Luxury whisky however requires the aesthetics and presentation to justify its asking price. Glenfiddich have a 50-year-old single malt whisky which comes in a hand-stitched leather-bound case which has been lined with hand-woven silk and decorated with Scottish silver. There’s also a wax labelling to polish it off.RELATED: What Your Choice In Whisky Actually Says About You

Carbohydrates You Should Eat If You Want To Lose Weight, According To Dieticians
Carbohydrates You Should Eat If You Want To Lose Weight, According To Dieticians

Everyone wants to maintain a majestic physique all year, but when winter rolls round it can be hard to keep the comfort-food cravings in check. It starts with a hearty stew for four (eaten by one: you) with a side of sourdough, and ends up in a pit full of self loathing, chocolate wrappers and double glazed Krispy Cremes.

However, not all carbohydrates were made equal, and with the prominence of low carb diets like the Keto, Atkins and Paleo, promoted by well-meaning health freaks and pseudo-intellectuals alike, much of the population has developed an irrational fear of carbohydrates. A fear we need to get over, fast.

Why is that? Well, as reported this morning by the SBS, dieticians recommend we should eat a specific type of carb to manage our weight and prevent chronic disease: whole grains. Dietitians Alex Parker and Anna Debenham from the nutrition consultancy organisation The Biting Truth, told the SBS that if we paint all carbohydrates with the same brush, we will miss out on the benefits of ‘good’ carbs.

“Quinoa and chocolate cake are both carbohydrates. Quinoa is a whole grain and it will help you to feel fuller for longer while chocolate cake is a refined food that is obviously not good for weight loss.”

Other foods which include refined carbs are white rice, white bread, processed crackers, some refined breakfast cereals, pearl barley and pearl couscous. Whole grains, on the other hand, have a low glycaemic index (GI) making them wonderful for weight management.

“Whole grain consumption is linked to weight loss and weight management because it contains nutrients like fibre that make you feel full, that are also good for your gut health,” the dieticians told SBS.

Evidence also suggests that people who eat whole grains regularly may be less likely to develop heart disease, type 2 diabetes and bowel cancer, said the report.

Fitness Experts Reveal The Only Time You Should Ever Skip A Workout

As winter rolls around and cold snaps wreak havoc on everyone from co-workers to partners to that-guy-next-to-you-on-the-bus-who-can’t-stop-sneezing, it’s a hard time of year to keep fit.And then it happens. You start to come down with a cold – but at the same time realise you haven’t been to the gym in over a week (and have been cooped up in an office all day exercising little more than your eye-rolling muscles) – you face the age-old dilemma: to gym or not to gym? When’s it ok to sweat it out, and when should you take a break? It depends on what kind of exercise you’re going to do, and how sick you are. Generally speaking, low-intensity activities like walking, stretching and yoga (not Bikram), which require little recovery from, have been shown to increase immunity, and can even help you get better quicker. However, if you’re feeling sick, a high-intensity session or long cardio workout can impair your immune function and lengthen recovery time—making you sicker. What constitutes low or high intensity depends on your current level of fitness, age and regular exercise routine. A low-intensity workout should leave you feeling good and energised while a high-intensity workout will leave you feeling like you just ran a marathon (hint: don’t run a marathon). We hit up Stephen Massey, a GP at Bondi Doctors, who said that people should listen to their bodies but never try and “sweat it out.” According to him, “Feeling exhausted means your body is using its energy to fight the infection and you shouldn’t deprive the immune system by over exerting yourself.” So stick to light exercise—at most.

“Some light exercise in mild illness does seem to have benefits which I suspect are mostly mental. For this reason I recommend light cardio such as walking, light jogging or swimming aiming for outdoors for the added benefit of some fresh air and vitamin D.”

Mike Webby, an ex-commando turned PT, agreed, telling us, “If you are genuinely sick and not just being a drama queen then rest! Let your immune system have your full energy resources to fight off the attack from inside instead adding more stress to the body and prolonging the recovery. Only you know how your body is feeling so forget your gym program or fitness app for a few days until you are feeling better and get back at it. Your future body will thank you for it and you will come back stronger.” Although he admits this may be easier to come to grips with the older you get.

“You are only too sick to train if you are dead.”

“This used to be my younger Commando attitude to training as I would see it as a mental and physical challenge but now that i’m a little older, wiser (possibly) and a little less ego-driven, I have learnt to listen to my body and know when it’s telling me to rest and recover.”As for ‘what type of sick you are,’ as pointed out by Precision Nutrition, below the neck symptoms, such as coughing, aching muscles, fever and fatigue, diarrhoea and vomiting mean it’s time to take a few days off and get back to the exercise when your symptoms or infection are gone.”When you’re in good health, a tough workout creates a physical stress response in your body—and adaptation to this is how we get fitter and stronger. However, the takeaway point here is to hold off these high intensity workouts until you get better. So: time to Netflix and Sneeze.RELATED: Health Experts Reveal The Secret To Staying Fit In Your 20’s

David Beckham Casually Rocks $55,000 Watch With A Basic White T-Shirt In Tokyo

The global football star and men’s fashion icon arrived in Haneda Airport yesterday in a very flight-friendly outfit with a slight twist.A simple white tee, relaxed black trousers, sneakers, carry pouch…the standard stuff any guy would wear on a trans-pacific flight. Or so we thought. The devil is in the details for the Becks’ latest outfit and what he’s pulled off here has likely never been tried by another man.Beckham wore an insane AU$55,250 yellow gold Rolex Yachtmaster II with his simple white tee which was backed up by a Louis Vuitton monogram holdall bag and a grey pair of Adidas Yeezy PowerPhase Calabasas sneakers. If that’s not the definition of elevating a relaxed look to the next level then we don’t know what is. Pick one up online here if you have a spare $55,000Whilst some may argue that Conor McGregor does this all the time with his flashy watches and polo shirts, McGregor’s casual looks are often more polished and curated than Beckham’s proper ‘I got off a flight’ look. You can see the evidence here.Who said you can’t mix luxury and comfort? Not David Beckham.
