Bob McTavish – inventor of the vee bottom surfboard and a key figure in the 1960s’ shortboard revolution – is one of Australia’s most legendary surfboard shapers and designers. The cheerful 78-year-old is now selling his Byron Bay house.
The Suffolk Park residence is likely to sell for a pretty penny, with the upcoming April 30th auction hoping to attract bids around $3.5 million, realestate.com.au reports.
McGrath agent Heidi Last is in charge of the 2/40 Corkwood Crescent, Suffolk Park, NSW 2481 listing.
The listing talks up the place’s mid-century modernism vibes, and calls the home, which is an elevated 1,058m2 property with ocean views, “glamorous & captivating.” It was designed by architect Allan Mitchell.

The house is in an enviable position, with just a short walk to Suffolk Park shops and cafes. Features include a north/east facing aspect, massive windows you can see the forest through, and a view of the Cape Byron Lighthouse. There’s also a lounge/dining area with designer decor, outdoor retreats for entertaining, a Palm Springs inspired pool, a custom, luxurious kitchen and a butler’s pantry.
The residence has three opulent bedrooms, lavishly appointed bathrooms and a master suite with an ensuite. Guests’ quarters are studio style with separate access to the house and air conditioning throughout.

There is room on the property for a boat or van, and it has low maintenance grounds with “pretty hidden garden settings.” Overall it is described as a place with “rural ambience” yet is still close to local shops, Tallow Beach and Byron Bay.

McTavish was born in 1944. He is the son of an accountant and first began surfing on a 16-foot plywood paddleboard, aged 12, not long after moving with his family to Brisbane.
According to the Encyclopedia Of Surfing, McTavish dropped out of school at 15 and – two years later – moved to Sydney and began shaping boards, eventually working for a number of notable shapers, before becoming one in his own right.

After living and shaping in Sydney for about seven years, McTavish moved back up North – this time to the Far North Coast, when he was around 25.
According to realestate.com.au, the Suffolk Park median house price is $1.95 million, and the area has seen 15 per cent annual compound growth over the past five years. McTavish appears well-positioned to capitalise on this trend with the upcoming sale of his house.

Flights are cheaper on Tuesdays. If you check in last your bags will come out first. Street food will always make you sick. Hostels are the cheapest form of accommodation. Warning signs only apply to other people…
There are a lot of travel myths out there. But sometimes a golden piece of advice emerges from the spin cycle. Speaking of which: here’s a doozy. Start booking early morning flights, and leave anything later than 8am for the laggards.
Why? There are three big reasons.
The first reason you should always book an early morning flight is this; it reduces the probability you will get hit with delays. Think about it: traffic on your way to the airport, the number of people queueing up in the airport, and then the number of planes vying for runway slots are all fewer in the morning.
Those early morning flights are 10000% better with a view like this
— Dulles Airport (IAD) (@Dulles_Airport) March 22, 2021: IG matt_zolper pic.twitter.com/FpkSEDy5j0
Beyond sheer numbers, there has also been less time for a machine to break, a staff member to walk off the job, or an unruly passenger to cause chaos. Not to mention: flight attendants are also less likely to be grumpy if your flight hasn’t been delayed.
The second reason you should always book an early morning flight is that, according to some flight attendants, planes will have less chance of being dirty. As flight attendant Stella Connolly told NBC News in 2019: “Early morning flights are the best. They’re almost always on time.”
“As the day goes by, if one flight is late it’s a snowball effect and there’s a higher chance flights will be delayed. I recommend flying early.”
Stella Connolly
Connolly also said: “Cleaning crews don’t have time to do much between flights. Trash is picked up after the plane lands, bathrooms are cleaned and the aircraft is vacuumed.”
RELATED: Always Eat This Food On A Long Haul Flight, If You Want To Stay Fresh
Another reason to book an early morning flight is, especially outside of holiday time, it gives you a slightly better chance of being on a flight with a couple of empty seats. Whether that means an upgrade offer (to be paid for with points, as most are these days) or the chance to lay across a free row of seats, that’s a win in our book (they’re also sometimes cheaper).
I’m never booking an early morning flight again I say before booking the morning flight because it’s cheaper.
— Nomadic Matt (@nomadicmatt) May 14, 2021
The third reason to always book an early morning flight is, as Science ABC explains, because most thunderstorms happen later in the day or at night. These can either cause delays or turbulence, neither of which are something you want for your flight.
Then there is of course the joy of a 6am Aperol Spritz, which really can’t be beaten, really…

The following article was produced in partnership with Bulgari.
There is nothing the world’s top watchmakers love more than competing over horological superlatives… But there’s one watch model that’s broken more records than any other: the Bulgari Octo Finissimo.
First introduced in 2014, the Octo Finissimo has quickly become one of the most exciting and in-demand watches on the planet. While Bulgari says that the Octo Finissimo’s design was inspired by the octagonal motifs of Rome’s famous Basilica di Massenzio, the ultra-thin luxury sports watch has a distinctly Italian Futurist aesthetic. Can someone say sprezzatura?
But it’s not just Futurist in style, but substance, too. Ever since its introduction, the Bulgari Octo Finissimo has been responsible for numerous world firsts in watchmaking – all to do with the thickness of their watches (or rather, lack thereof).
Indeed, Bulgari has already been responsible for the watch story of 2022 with their latest release: the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Ultra, which is officially the world’s thinnest mechanical watch. At an incredible 1.8mm thin, it’s a complete marvel.

Other records that call the Octo Finissimo family home include the world’s thinnest automatic watch, the world’s thinnest mechanical chronograph movement, the world’s thinnest tourbillon and the world’s thinnest perpetual calendar.
These are all impressive records in isolation, but in totality, it’s simply mind-blowing that only one watch; one watchmaker has pulled them all off.
Even the ‘regular’ (if you can call it such a thing) Bulgari Octo Finissimo is a supremely impressive timepiece. Yes, it’s exceptionally thin – which means it’s comfortable to wear and easy slips under a shirt cuff – but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. It’s also incredibly good looking and highly legible, with lots of clever design features.
The unobtrusive crown features clever ridges which make it easy to change the time. A beautifully executed sapphire crystal caseback lets you admire its impressive BVL 138 in-house movement, with its stunning platinum microrotor. It boasts a 60-hour power reserve and is water-resistant to 100m.

That’s before we start talking about its amazing integrated bracelet. Bulgari might make the Octo Finissimo in Neuchâtel, one of the capitals of Swiss watchmaking, but its bracelet is emblematic of the 138 years of Roman jewellery-making savoir-faire the brand is famous for. Its seemingly endless cascade of small, angular links is not just visually stunning but incredibly ergonomic.
It’s also available in a wide range of complications, case materials and colours, so no matter your tastes or style, there’s an Octo Finissimo to suit you.
In short, few watches are as good-looking, versatile and horologically significant as the Bulgari Octo Finissimo. There’s a reason why watch aficionados the world over have labelled this impressive timepiece a future classic: it’s truly a piece of art. Our take? There are few better pieces of art one could invest in…

If you go to the gym, the chances are high that you also use protein supplements, such as a protein powder, to increase your protein intake to help build muscle. But, choosing the best protein powder for you isn’t always the easiest task, considering the incredibly vast selection on offer, all of which claim to provide the best benefits to help you pile on muscle, quicker.
But, is there actually any difference in the protein powders we choose to consume? According to Adam Sullivan, fitness coach and owner of Evidence Based Training, an “online training and nutrition platform that provides individualised strategies to fat loss and other fitness related goals,” the answer is no.
Adam has been taking Instagram and TikTok by storm lately with his brutally honest videos, busting various myths surrounding fitness – and fat loss predominantly – taking a no-nonsense approach to fitness and nutrition advice.
One of Adam’s recent videos concerns protein powders, with him answering the question “do you need a protein supplement?” Getting straight to the point, Adam says, “they’re all the f***ing same.”
“Stop reading the labels with all these bullshit claims, fat burning, this or that. Shred protein 500, lean gains 300.”
He goes on to explain what protein supplements actually do in their most basic sense. “If you are not hitting your protein requirements through diet, you use the supplement to hit them.”
“A protein supplement is an easy way to help you achieve your protein goals. So, if you are not already consuming 1.6 to 2.2 grams [of protein] per kilo of body weight per day, then a supplement may be useful for you. If you are, it’s probably going to do jack shit.”
“So, which supplement should you get if you need one? Probably one you like the taste of because protein is protein.”
In the comments section of his video, posted to both TikTok and Instagram, one user asks if there is any tangible difference between getting your protein from whole foods, compared to powders. Adam admits, perhaps contrary to belief, that protein powders are indeed a great source of protein.
We have previously discussed protein powders, and ones you should perhaps avoid, in a previous article, with help from Mark Robinson, a practising Dietitian with a Masters Degree in Nutrition & Dietetics and a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science. In that post, Mark said you should avoid protein powders that contain vegetable oils and fats, artificial sweeteners and dextrins.
Protein powders, as a product, have always been the subject of debate. Nutritionist Max Lugavere has also previously weighed in on the debate, adding that some vegetable-based protein powders can contain heavy metals, and powders made with rice protein can even contain trace quantities of arsenic.
Going off Adam’s video, however, this isn’t something you need to worry about. If the goal is to increase your protein intake, and you can’t hit your target through whole foods alone – meals such as the My Muscle Chef meals can be an easy and effective way to hit your macro targets – then chugging a protein shake is a perfectly acceptable way to do so.
There is evidence to suggest the optimal time to drink your protein shake is within 30-minutes of completing your workout, according to Dr Gabrille Lyon. In a podcast interview with Max Lugavere, she says, “You have to drink it within half an hour. The goal for muscle health is to get the boldest amount of amino acids in the bloodstream at once.”
You may or may not agree with Adam’s message, but, the bottom line is, just use a protein supplement you enjoy the taste of and which you can afford. If you practice a vegetarian or vegan diet, then opt for protein supplements free of dairy products, of course. For the majority, we may just be sold on marketing, when the actual product is all the same.

Despite a lack of hair length, short haircuts for men can be interpreted in several different ways. Whether it be a slick, sophisticated quiff hairstyle or a more edgy and daring undercut with side-part, the possibilities when it comes to short hairstyles are almost endless.
Your face shape will ultimately determine what short hairstyle works for you. This could be anything from a buzz cut to a crew, or a faux hawk to a taper fade. For each short haircut, there are even more variations.
While this presents potentially too much choice when it comes to deciding on a short hairstyle, it also means there is effectively no ‘wrong’ answer.

Asking your barber for a short haircut
Don’t expect to just sit down in the chair and let your barber cut away. It’s always useful to have several examples of the type of short hairstyle you’re after stored on your phone, whether these be of celebrities or images you’ve found online when you search ‘short haircuts for men’.
Use celebrities as inspiration for hairstyles for short hair, as you’re unlikely to replicate their exact look.
As any good barber will tell you, we’re not all made for the same style of a short hairstyle, no matter how good it may look on someone else. Like it or not, there are several different hair types; from straight and curly to afro and Asian, and then you need to consider whether your hair is thin or thick.
These factors and more can have a direct effect on the short haircut that works best for you.
A good barber or hairdresser will also ask you questions about what you wear – daytime, work time, and party time. They’ll approach your overall cut with this in mind to keep you looking good in your threads.
Maintaining Short Hairstyles For Men
Short haircuts look their best when they are just that, short. Inevitably, your hair grows and after 2-3 weeks, it will start to look a little untidy, especially around the neckline and over your ears. To help combat this unkempt look, make sure you revisit your barber at the very least, every four weeks, but if you’re able to maintain a regular schedule, hitting that sweet 3 week mark, you’ll be looking slick and suave all year round.
Keeping on top of the maintenance will be of particular importance to guys with thick hair. When you get your hair cut short, it’s always a good idea to ask your barber to point cut it to create some texture, allowing you to be able to run your hands through it much easier, and removing some of the weight. If you have thick hair, this texture will disappear as your hair grows, making it harder to style and taking longer to dry.
Iconic Short Hairstyles To Know
Need some inspiration? We’ve rounded up some of the most popular men’s short hairstyles to help you decide which is best for you.
Buzz Cut Haircut

Possibly the most low maintenance haircut for all men, the buzz cut is a military-inspired look that can add some sophistication to your overall appearance. You can achieve an authentic buzz cut yourself at home by taking a set of clippers set to one length and hacking away.
However, if you leave it the same length all over, you end up stepping into butch cut territory (more on that below), so for a more modern approach, you should consider asking your barber to add a fade on the sides.
The fade itself can be anything from a low-fade to a high-fade, or even a taper fade. The boundaries between the buzz cut, butch cut and crew cut definitely blur somewhat, so be sure to be clear with your barber what you’re after, and to ask for their professional opinion as to which style will suit your face type the best.
Butch Cut Haircut

The butch cut haircut is incredibly similar to the buzz cut above (in fact, it technically sits within the same family), but goes one further by going super short all over in one uniform length. Uniform is the keyword there, since this haircut is one predominantly adopted by those in the military.
While we say it’s super short, that doesn’t mean you have to opt for a number 1 or a number 2 on the clippers for it to be considered ‘butch’, but you could equally go for a 4 or 5, just as long as it’s the same length all over.
It’s with this in mind that the butch cut can easily be achieved at home by yourself, or with the help of a partner, as all it requires you to do is run the clippers all over your head, leaving no stray hairs behind. As for styling the butch cut, because of the lack of length, there isn’t a lot you can do. However, you can apply some wax into the hair you do have to provide a shinier finish and to prevent it from looking a little bit fluffy.
Crew Cut Haircut

Equally popular as the buzz cut and also with military roots is the crew haircut. Best suited to those with squarer faces and thick hair (although most men should be able to achieve this cut of some description) and easy to maintain, it’s the perfect all-rounder. If you’ve never gone short before, the crew cut is the best option for first-timers.
It’s similar to the buzz cut above, but rather than have one length all over (if going for authenticity) the hair on top will be longer than the sides, so if you like to work some product into your hair, this is the one to go for. As seen here on Channing Tatum, the crew cut works well with a quiff when styled, but it can also look great with a side-part hairstyle below.
Short Side-Part Haircut

The side-part hairstyle for men can be applied to all hair lengths but is particularly effective for short hair. You’ll need regular maintenance to keep the side as short as possible, but do so, and you’ll be in the possession of a suave haircut that works just as well in the boardroom as it does at the weekend. Whilst you need a hard, defined part for it to be called a side-part, what you do with the sides is down to you.
You could opt for a high-fade, exposing a lot of skin on the side of the head, or, as in the image above, you could go for what we would consider to be the best option, and that’s a taper fade effect.
French Crop Haircut

The French Crop is a seriously classic haircut for men and can be worn in any number of ways. The original French Crop asks for clipped hair on the back and sides, with the top cut only slightly longer. Modern interpretations see the hair remaining longer on top than the sides, but with a blunt fringe and, usually, much shorter sides to create a high contrast between the two.
Taper Fade Haircut

The taper fade haircut has proven to be incredibly popular with men in recent years, thanks to its suave style and sophistication and ability to pair well not only with casual and formal outfits, but it suits a wide range of face types too, compared to something like a high fade, for example.
The taper fade haircut is named as such because of the way the hair tapers on the sides of the head, going from longer to shorter, but all being blended together to create a smooth transition. However, the rate at which the hair transitions from long to short is totally up to you, as there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answer. You can even taper down to expose the skin, if you wish.
As for the hair on top, again, the length at which you have it is down to you, although your face shape may come into play a little here. Ultimately, you can pair the taper fade with pretty much any short or medium-length men’s hairstyle, and you’ll be onto a winner.
Ivy League Haircut

Named after the high-profile American universities, the Ivy League combines elements of several other haircuts. Similar to a crew cut in that the hair at the front is longer than at the back (the length will vary depending on the individual’s face shape and hair type) and worn in a side-part, the Ivy League is usually styled with wax to give a slick, business-style finish haircut for men.
Caesar Cut Haircut

Named after the notorious Roman Emperor, the classic Caesar cut calls for the same hair length all over, cut horizontally with straight bangs (fringe). While its history can be traced back hundreds of years, it is very much a modern men’s cut, although we feel a tapered fade will be more effective for any men wanting this cut. This is short hair at its imperial finest.
Quiff Haircut

With clear inspiration taken from the Pompadour, the quiff haircut is one that can be worn by men of all ages and in many ways. While all quiffs call for longer hair on the top than on the sides, a classic version will only exhibit a slight variance in length between the two. More modern versions can range from anywhere between a classic short back and sides to an undercut, giving a seriously hard contrast. This looks great if you have thick hair.
Short Pompadour

This brings us on perfectly to the pompadour. Named after a mistress of King Louis XV of France the pompadour is instantly recognisable due to its sheer volume. Classic examples of this haircut resemble the late great Elvis Presley (meaning your hair needs to be longer), but modern interpretations scale it back a little, and this is where the short pompadour haircut comes into play. There is some crossover with the quiff, but the short pompadour hairstyle will be far more streamlined and unified. Another thick hair winner.
To help you first decide if a short haircut is for you and furthermore, how to achieve a good one and how to maintain and style it, DMARGE reached out to some of Sydney’s best barbers, for their professional opinions.
Tips & Tricks
Adam Walmsley – Friends & Family
- Keep the contrast in length to a minimum when choosing short haircuts for men
- Having a short haircut that blends gradually from the back and sides into a slightly longer length on top will increase the longevity and the versatility. Using this as a guide frees you up to wear a cropped cut, skin-tight or suede soft.
- Don’t be tied to one type of product, although a decent product can be pricey, having 3 or 4 variations in both hold and texture will help you dress for any occasion.
- Stronger hold products such as Davines ‘This Is A Strong Hold Wax, is a must for creating definition in tightly cropped lengths.
- For a more relaxed, “who gives a f*ck?”, texture try drying a medium hold paste into your short hair from wet. The key is experimenting and don’t always do what it tells you to do on the tin.
- It’s a given that a short haircut needs more upkeep so you’ll need regular trips to your hairdresser but there is a way of squeezing out an extra week of looking sharp.
- Make sure your hairdresser graduates your hairline around the back and sides as close to a natural finish as is possible. This means no hard lines on the neck! So if you guy asks you if you want a square or V-shapes hairline at the back, run for the hills because he’s not your guy anymore.
Anthony Nader – RAW Hair Salon Sydney
- Texture, texture, and more texture is the secret to keep your short precision hair cut looking fantastic and in shape for longer. Ask your hairstylist to cut more texture into your next haircut, then you can get more leverage and create even more cool hair shapes on top.
- For the days you want to go that choppy dishevelled look, get yourself a tub a moulding paste and this will make you look campaign-worthy.
- For the days you want to go on the smoother route, go get yourself a bottle of Kiehl’s Silk Groom.
Phoenix Thomson – American Crew
- Keeping your hair short can often become less than exciting if you don’t keep a little length to work with. My advice for this season is keeping a look versatile, with added length on top.
- Being able to morph your short hairstyles into a more groomed and dapper shape can be as easy as using a product with a high shine and shaping with a comb to create a smoother finish. Try drying American Crew Firm Hold Gel into the hair to give support and finish off with a small amount of American Crew Pomade wiped over the surface to keep the hair in place, and create a high shine result.
- Short hair does mean more visits to the salon to keep the hairline in shape and any unwanted neck hair at bay. Keeping your appointments to a four-weekly routine will ensure your look is always fresh.

Driving in Australia isn’t for the faint-hearted. Hook turns in Melbourne, aggressive kangaroos in the Northern Territory, tropical heat in Far North Queensland, Lexus drivers who are allergic to indicating in Sydney…
But for the most part, driving in the Land Down Under is a far more straightforward deal than it is in many other countries. Indeed, there’s one struggle that most drivers in Europe are dealing with right now that would be completely alien to most Aussies – changing over from winter to summer tyres.
Winter (or snow) tyres typically have a much more aggressive tread pattern than normal (or summer) tyres, and occasionally even have metal or ceramic studs protruding from their treads. They’re noisier and less fuel-efficient than normal tyres, but provide much-needed traction in snowy or slushy conditions.
Indeed, some European countries actually mandate winter tires between specific dates or when roads are snowy or icy, like Austria, Finland, Germany and Russia. Right now, many Europeans are having to book in with their mechanics or tyre shops to swap over their tyres.
Actually, lots of tyre shops in Europe will store customers’ winter/summer tyres and rims during alternate seasons. But it’s still a big hassle, as well as a substantial cost that Australian drivers mostly don’t have to worry about.
Even drivers in snowy areas of Australia will mostly just throw on snow chains over normal tyres (something many Euros would consider bizarre) if weather gets particularly snowy. You’d be hard-pressed to even find winter tyres Down Under.
RELATED: Rude Electric Vehicle Problem Australians May Soon Face
Of course, Europe’s not the only part of the world where swapping from summer to winter tyres (and vice versa) is a part of motoring.
It’s also common practice in most of North America, for example – but with the weather still looking pretty frosty in most of Canada and much of the United States, many drivers will still be rolling around on winter tyres for a few more weeks or months yet.

Conor McGregor started as a scrawny plumber’s apprentice. Then he became a featherweight and lightweight double UFC champion (and one of the richest athletes in the world).
But what few people saw coming, even as little as seven years ago, when McGregor was just coming into his prime, was just how much bulk the Irish prizefighter would be swaggering around with in the year 2022.
But here we are.
Whether it’s tactical, due to his gruesome leg injury, or whether McGregor simply decided, ‘f*ck it, who needs cardio?’ The Notorious is now so bulky some Instagram followers have been inspired to suggest he move up a weight division (Conor has also cryptically said “all the belts” in another post recently, as unlikely as achieving that seems).
Of course, before his next fight, we’re sure he’ll slim down. But in the meantime: have at the above Instagram post, which shows just how much McGregor’s body has transformed over the last seven years (which McGregor posted to Instagram yesterday with the caption: “Climb the ladder”).
The image prompted some followers to say: “The bigger the worse” and “come back to 145lb” – a nod to McGregor’s losses of late. Others said: “need a win man” and “I’m about that 2017 life.”
“2015 – 2 losses. 2017 – 3 losses. 2022- 6 losses. You’re climbing down the ladder mate.”
Instagram user @cameronn.james
Yet others said: “Looking strong brother.” Another observation was that he looked like Christian Bale in 2015.
The real question, really, though, is whether the extra muscle is going to slow him up, or help him win his next fight.

No longer just a haircut for practising yoga masters, your wife’s tennis coach or the guy at university who has had one since “before they were cool”, the man bun is a men’s hairstyle that has waded through its fair share of criticism and cemented itself among the upper echelons of hairstyles for men.
Also known as the top knot or high bun, the ‘man bun’ is a hairstyle that is born out of serious patience. You need to wait some time for hair to grow out, after all, so that you pull the hair back and throw a hair tie around it. While the man bun tends to function best for men with thick hair, the actual length of the hair can range from medium length hair to long hair, and still provide enough to tie up.
But as with any men’s hairstyle, there are several variations of the man bun that you can employ, each with their own unique style that can make or break your overall look. We’ll take you through some of the most popular men’s man bun hairstyles, from the messy man bun to the bun with beard, with style cue from man bun toting celebrities such as Jared Leto and Jason Mamoa.
In this story…
While the Fabios grow their hair for the pleasure of preening and primping for hours on end, having a pristine mane that’s long and lush isn’t viable or important for most. Nor does it feel very masculine. The man-bun avoids all this precision styling, allowing you to grab your locks and tie them up, completely fuss-free. But certainly not style-free.
Half-Up Top Knot

The half-up top knot – which we liken to a samurai-inspired ninja knot – is a man bun using only the hair on top of the head. This top knot can be paired with an undercut if you wish, seeing you cutting the hair on the sides and back of the head to razor short length. This makes the man bun pop, and is a far more ‘fashion-y’ version of the man bun.
However, an undercut requires regular maintenance, so for those less willing to visit the barber every week or so, you can imitate the guy in the image above. Still using just the top layer of hair to put into a hair tie, the half-up top knot man bun can pair flawlessly with long hair (or medium length) flowing down past your shoulders.
Beach Chic

The windswept, salty benefits of beach hair extend to the man bun. The surf and sun are great thickeners of hair strands and lightening their pigment, which can then be swept up into a man bun, away from the face post-swim. A full bun is the foundation of this look, which sits loose and mid-to-high level at the back of the head.
Expect some fringe strands to fall out along the way, adding to the just-came-in-from-a-wave look. Cooler still, try the ninja knot but without the undercut, so you’ve got hair length flowing at the back of the head with a small bun tied neatly on top.
Bun And Beard

There are few things more masculine than body hair. So if you boast follicular prowess, you should exploit it and show it off. That’s where the man bun and beard comes into play. One of the most common man hairstyles you’ll see, if you can grow long hair both on your head and from your face, you’ll be the very epitome of burly.
Yes, this man bun hairstyle may bring up connotations of hipsters, but it’s a cool hairstyle nonetheless and one that you should definitely consider if you think a man bun is for you. The beauty of pairing a man bun with a beard is that you don’t necessarily need the hair on your head to be super long, as a long beard can make up for it.
It also works for men with all hair types, whether it be straight hair, curly hair or long wavy hair. Once you’ve got your hair to a good length to tie up, then you can make it as preened and proper or messy as you like (in our opinion, a messy man bun fairs far better in the style stakes).
Business Bun

While the man bun isn’t the most corporate-friendly men’s hairstyle on the (stock) market, the business bun makes it work. Nothing shaved or sheared here, make sure the man bun is relatively inconspicuous: sitting low to midway up the back of the head.
Styling options could be sleek with a bit of hair oil to keep the pieces in place or a matte, dry finish with hair paste. Just don’t overdo the oil, Mr Grease.
Mini Samurai Bun
The mini man bun is the hairstyle most men will attempt in their quest for a fully-fledged version of the notorious hairstyle. Once your hair length passes your ears, or at least reaches the bottom of them, then you should be ready to grab a hair tie and start your man bun journey.
While you will likely see some men tie their mini bun knot high up the back of the head, this man bun hairstyle fares far better if the knot is kept a little lower, as it won’t pull on the hair so much, meaning it’s less likely to come untied, and less likely to give you a headache.
You can, alternatively, pair the mini man bun with a undercut, leaving hair just on the top of your head. In this instance, a man bun tied higher up is a) the only possibility and b) a super stylish option.
How To Tie The Bun
To tie a man bun, take an elastic hairband or a neutral-coloured hair tie and pull the hair back – starting from the forehead to the crown to the back of the head – aiming for one clean swoop. Once you have collected all your hair at the point where you want you man bun to form, you’ll be left with a ponytail.
Take the tail and pass it through the elastic band, as you would a regular ponytail. Pass the hair again through the elastic band, but stopping once the knot part of the bun is formed (roughly half the distance of the end of the scooped hair). Now, close and circle the elastic band on the end of hair, not too loose that the man bun could fall out, and not so tight that you get a migraine.
Taking Care Of Your Bun
The man bun requires you to have long hair. And the key to long hair is taking good care of it (even if you do make it messy). Getting it cut regularly prevents excessive dryness at the ends of the hair, which can leads to split ends and fuzziness.
Come shower time, invest in some good quality shampoo and conditioner, ensuring you use enough to cover all the hair, especially the ends. A deep conditioning treatment is useful for the ends too and a leave-in conditioner applied weekly or fortnightly is certainly something you can do to help keep your hair looking healthy.
Finally, if you’re prone to using hairdryers or straighteners, apply a heat protector before hand. Again, pay special attention to your ends as a lot of the natural oils from the scalp can’t work their way to the end of the hair shaft. You want to have even hair-health, from root to tip.

A group of sightseers have awoken the fingers of Sydney’s keyboard warriors, incurring the wrath of Reddit’s r/sydney community by posing for photos on Wedding Cake Rock.
Wedding Cake Rock is a bleached-white rock platform in Sydney’s south, which was fenced off after a 2015 report said it could collapse at any time into the ocean.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has threatened fines of up to $3,300 for those looking to get frisky with fate.
Before Wedding Cake Rock’s closure, a French student died in 2014 when a piece crumbled. In 2015, two guys had to be rescued after one fell off and landed onto the ledge below.
Now though, one Redditor in the r/sydney community has claimed that tourists are back to their photo-snapping habits, writing: “Tourist season: ON” and uploading a photo of three individuals #werkingit on Wedding Cake.
The post was met with comments like “‘It won’t happen to me’ vibes are big” and “‘They just put those signs there to discourage too many people going on it’ they said. Probably.”

Another Reddit user got philosophical, asking: “If a tree falls in the woods and it wasn’t put up on insta, did it happen?”
Yet another wrote: “Jesus. A lady literally died at the pink caves [a spot on the Central Coast] this weekend. How important is a photo?!”
“People are willing to risk their lives for a good insta” another grumbled.
“If you assume the rock would fall at some random time in the next 10 years, then 5 minutes there give you a one in a million chance of death,” said yet another.
Other points of view were less critical of tourists. One wrote: “It’s weird to single out tourists like that. Yes, those at Wedding Rock are tourists, because the locals have gotten their photos years ago before it was fenced.”
The same Reddit user added: “A few km down the road, you got Wattamolla, where there’s a rock ledge that’s also fenced off, which does nothing to prevent a huge queue of people lining up to jump into the water from that ledge. And in that case, those ‘rules don’t apply to me’ people are definitely mostly locals.”
Others questioned whether the individuals pictured were really tourists. One wrote: “Very little chance they are influencers. Probably just teens wanting a cool picture.”
“Come on everyone,” said another. “100s of people take a photo there every day. They can’t all be influencers.”
“If you hang around near the rock on a sunny weekend day, you’ll see well over a hundred people do this through the day. Often there’s a queue to take turns posing on the rock. Seems like a prime revenue-raising opportunity.”
