25 Vibrant Examples Of Accent Colours In Interior Design
25 Vibrant Examples Of Accent Colours In Interior Design

Perhaps you like the serenity that comes with simple, soothing Scandinavian interior design. Maybe you’re the “go hard or go home” type who believes bigger is always better.

Or maybe you fall somewhere in between. Your aesthetic is bold but tasteful. You take risks, but never go overboard. You embrace minimalism and maximalism in equal parts. For you, there are accent colours.

Interior design experts have much to say on the subject of shade. They tout the importance of understanding colour psychology, of mixing complementary hues, of creating a cohesive space, of abiding by the 60-30-10 rule. The accent colour is beloved by pros for its ability to add depth and interest to a room (not to mention a hefty dose of style).

The good news? You can be as risky or as restrained as you want. Either way, an eye-catching shade expresses your personality and makes your pad appear more thoughtfully composed.

Surf the gallery above for inspirational interiors with a range of accent colour styles. Some keep it simple, with neutral bases in black and white and only small splashes of daring hues. Others are fearless in the face of pigment, blending multiple colours and striking patterns into an artful display of aesthetic guts. Let us know your favourites below.

Holiday Like A Magnificent Bastard At One&Only Hayman Island
Holiday Like A Magnificent Bastard At One&Only Hayman Island

The concept of a ‘tropical island getaway’ is a little tired these days. Especially if you’re Australian. We live in a country where popping down to the servo for milk and bread means bypassing some of the world’s most beautiful and natural wonders, that’s why when something truly special comes along, attention is due. Enter One&Only Hayman Island, a must-go for all Magnificent Bastards. Here’s why.

Landing in Hamilton Island what is apparent within in seconds is the temperature. At this time of the year, although overcast, you’ll be quickly ditching that brand new bomber jacket for something more short-sleeved, with a comfortable and lazy balminess of about 20-25 degrees.

Next is a luxury yacht transfer on the ‘Sun Goddess’ from Hamilton to Hayman where you’ll be wined and dined, but mostly plied with pink champagne until spotting a whale will make even the toughest of men giggle with delight.

Stay

On arriving at Hayman Island you’ll be whisked to your room by your very own ‘personal butler’. Yes, that’s right. No expense is spared in this case, and the chilled bottle of G. H. Mumm waiting for you only emphasises that sentiment.

My personal butler, Rebecca, seemed to monitor my every move and on more than one occasion would find me stuffing my face at lunch, or perched on a towel near the pool to tell me I had a massage booked in 30 minutes time. Talk about customer service.

If you’re lucky enough to score one of the Pool Suites, apart from the breathtaking and expansive view of One&Only’s crystal blue hexagonal Hayman pool from your private double balcony, you’ll be gasping at the room’s seriously slick interiors.

The bed, truly fit for a king, is complete with a luxe canopy and more decorative pillows than you can poke a stick at. Two TV’s provide plenty of mindless indulgence and a huge living room with plush textured furnishings means entertaining is definitely on the cards. The bathroom, however, is really where the magic happens. A massive bath, two basins, plenty of reflective surfaces and some seriously flattering lighting will have you looking and feeling sharp whether you’re stumbling in after a few too many poolside cocktails, or prepping for a day at the beach.

Eat

When it comes to eating at One&Only Hayman Island, think less ‘dude food’ and more fine dining with a huge range of restaurants offering everything from Pan-Asian specialities to family-friendly Italian favourites.

Poolside Aquazure is perfect for lunch – perhaps a fresh prawn caesar salad with a glass of crisp Semillon – while Bamboo is better for late night Asian delights – the Toothfish, followed by banana fritters for dessert is a must. Keen on carb-loading? Look no further than One&Only’s Amici restaurant. Authentic Italian-style pizza and pasta, and of course, plenty of red wine is the perfect hangover cure. We recommend the Spaghetti Ai Fruitti Di Mare with a hearty glass of the Ninth Hill Pinor Noir, and the cheeky salt and oil-encrusted Foccacia to really line your stomach in foodie style.

Breakfast is served daily at Pacific. It’s a buffet, but before you start picturing screaming kids and cold scrambled eggs, humour us. It’s location (practically on the beach) is enough to get most tongues wagging, but the food offering is pretty spectacular as well. Everything from freshly poached eggs to potato rosti, bagels and sweet treats are on offer – plus extremely strong coffee for those who need a little help waking up.

If boozing up and winding down is on the agenda, On The Rocks takes you back to the hexagonal pool and Bar Fifty offers a laidback Hamptons-style scene for an exquisite cocktail or two. If you haven’t reached full-blown Insta-fame by this point, time is running out.

Play

Luckily, if the weather has gone tits up while you’re on Hayman Island there’s plenty you can do indoors. The One&Only spa is the perfect place to achieve true relaxation, whether you’re rebalancing your chakras in the sauna and plunge pool, renewing your spirit in the spa’s steam room or going for a totally decadent 60-minute Swedish massage.

If there’s a special occasion that has brought you to the island, One&Only’s hair salon is a great option. A quick wash and trim might be all you need to feel pampered during your stay, or perhaps an award-winning pedicure by French podiatrist to the stars, Bastien Gonzalez.

If you’re itching to get out and about, however, One&Only Hayman Island does not disappoint when it comes to outdoor activities for the Bear Grylls in all of us. There’s diving and snorkelling on offer, beachfront catamaran sailing, windsurfing, stand up paddleboarding, kayaking as well as water-skiing and wakeboarding for the real adrenalin junkies.

The Main Event

Last weekend D’Marge was invited to stay at Hayman Island One&Only for An Appetite for Paradise, the first of two VIP culinary escapes available to MasterCard holders as part of Priceless Cities, an initiative that gives cardholders access to unique experiences in over 40 priceless destinations globally.

In honour of the occasion, Australia’s most awarded chef and the brains behind Rockpool, Neil Perry, and his award-winning team, hosted an exclusive five-course degustation dinner that featured everything from locally-sourced Marron to Steamed Coral Trout and Charcoal Cooked Duck Breast along with some of Australia’s best wine.

During his time on Hayman Island, D’Marge had the chance to sit down with Chef Neil Perry in the midst of his culinary craziness to chat everything food and travel.

KV: Where is the best place to get food off the beaten track?

NP: There’s a Chinese place next door to the Courthouse Hotel in Cairns called Taste of China, it was so good I wish it was in Sydney…a nice little discovery for me.

KV: Why do you think Hayman Island is such an amazing culinary escape?

NP: The One&Only guys are focused on luxury experiences, you’ve got an island where a 10 minute boat ride will take you to the reef, or an island with an amazing turtle sanctuary. You can go jet skiing, sea bobbing, fishing and then come back and have an amazing choice of restaurants and pools. It’s an ‘anything goes’ holiday where you can lie by the pool and chill out, or be an action man if you want….one of the guilty pleasures of having time.

KV: What would you consider to be the most priceless city in the world?

NP: A city I love is Tokyo. The food is extraordinary. You can eat poorly everywhere in the world, but I’m not sure you can eat poorly in Tokyo. Whether it’s a bowl of noodles, sushi or sashimi, the restaurants are so focused, everybody concentrates on beautiful ingredients. There’s great galleries, walking and shopping, and you’re sort of in the same time zone.

KV: What’s on your bucket list?

NP: I really want to get to South America. I’m keen to get to Argentina, Peru and Chile and experience the food – the beef and fire.

KV: What’s next for you?

NP: I don’t really consider myself to be a chef anymore, although it is part of my life, day-to-day I’m running a business with 1,000 staff. I like to think of it as a sportsman – I was a player, then a captain, the captain’s coach, the manager and now I’m the owner.

I have a great relationship with my staff, I delegate and trust them implicitly. Me and my business partner Trish are all about being sustainable, in terms of produce but also sustainable people, so we don’t burn them out.

KV: How do you like to relax and unwind?

NP: I love skiing, but I also just love eating beautiful food and having a great bottle of wine with family and friends. We cook well at home, we eat at my restaurants and we eat all around the world.

Sounds like the key to happiness is rather simple, then.

Missed out on MasterCard’s An Appetite for Paradise at One&Only Hayman Island? Fear not. Venturing on from the Whitsunday’s to a relaxing retreat in the NSW Greater Blue Mountains, the second exquisite event will take place at Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley this November.

10 Best Dating Apps & How They'll Score You A Date
10 Best Dating Apps & How They'll Score You A Date

In the digital age we live in, striking up a conversation with the cute checkout girl has been replaced with swipes, matches, an exchange of LOLs and suggestive GIF’s hopefully leading to a date, and for some, a long-lasting relationship.

Dating apps have become such a phenomenon of our modern lives that last year 59% of people said that online dating was a good way to meet people. Sounds pretty promising, right? Well, only if you know you’re way around the deep waters of online dating like a pro. There are currently thousands, yes thousands, of dating apps to choose from.

With choices like ‘Thrinder’ for adventurous singles seeking threesomes, ‘Christian Mingle’ and ‘JSwipe’ for dating hopefuls with a religious inclination, ‘Bristlr’ for bearded men, the self-explanatory ‘Farmers Only’, ‘Gluten-Free Singles’ for bread-haters and even the notorious ‘Seeking Arrangement’ for sugar daddy hook-ups, where does one even begin to sort the good dating apps from the bad?

Well, we’ve done the hard work for you with a run-down of what we believe to be the 10 best dating apps, and how they’ll score you a date. Stop your aimless swiping, scrolling and stalking and check out the list below.

#1 OKCupid

OKCupid is rather straightforward and features a massive pool of users, about 30 million to be exact. The app is also constantly looking to improve itself, adding features like ‘Flavours’, a function that allows users to quickly view different genres of potential matches e.g. ‘Kinky Nerds’, ‘Beard Lovers’, ‘World Travelers’ etc so you can weed out the definite no’s.

OKCupid also features personality quizzes, Instagram integration and a premium subscription service that can give you the ability to see users who have liked you.

Median age: 32.

Perfect For: Adventurous dating hopefuls with specific tastes and perhaps a few skeletons in the closet.

#2 Tinder

It’s an oldie, but a goldie, and perhaps the most well-known dating app that is out there. Inspired by gay dating app Grindr, Tinder encourages you to make yes or no decisions based on first impression profile pictures, swiping right if you approve and left if you don’t. Both parties swipe right? You’ve got yourself a match, sir. Tinder has most recently added GIF messaging, and the ability to ‘like’ chat messages.

Median age: 26.

Perfect For: Mirror selfie enthusiasts who value a good first impression.

#3 Hinge

Hinge is a dating app that makes introductions through mutual friends on Facebook. It announced Wedneday, May 13, 2015, that it would begin to list relationship status in an effort to crack down on cheaters.

“Cut the clutter. Cut the creeps” is Hinge’s motto, a dating app that tries to take the awkwardness out of meeting randoms by only connecting mutual Facebook friends. To use Hinge you log in via your Facebook account and every day at noon you’ll be served up a fresh batch of matches. Only showing its users 10 matches on average per day, Hinge is all about quality over quantity.

“The number one way to meet people still today, despite the growth of online dating, is through friends. Your friends say a lot about you – your history, your interests, your socioeconomic status,” Hinge CEO Justin McLeod told Digital Trends

Median age: 27

Perfect For: Nervous nancies who want to avoid being catfished or don’t want to stray too far from their group of friends.

#4 Coffee Meets Bagel

The adorably-named Coffee Meets Bagel is a female-centric dating app that, according to Forbes, has helped to create more than 50,000 happy couples. Unlike apps like Tinder that give you endless swiping power, Coffee Meets Bagel awards each user with a small number of ‘bagels’ (matches) each day at noon. This means you won’t waste your precious time aimlessly swiping, and if you do get a match you have only 7 days to respond and set up a date. If you’re pretty active on Coffee Meets Bagel, you’ll be rewarded with ‘coffee beans’ which act as currency to buy more bagels.

Why is it so good? Apparently, it has the highest concentration of women. Yes, that’s right. Coffee Meets Bagel boasts a whopping 58.6% female users. In fact, Coffee Meets Bagel’s female to male ratio is so skewed that the app has created #LadiesChoice, a new iteration that encourages women to make the first move.

Median Age: 30

Perfect For: Young professionals frustrated by the shallow pool of ladies around them.

#5 Grindr

Boasting the title of the “world’s largest gay social network app”, Grindr has come leaps and bounds since it launched in 2009. In 2014, the app had achieved more than 10 million user downloads and had more than 5 million active monthly users in 192 countries. “Grindr shows you, using GPS technology down to the nearest few feet, the men in your vicinity looking to meet other men. Probably not to exchange recipes. Thus, in 2009, human civilisation evolved to a point where one could immediately find the nearest gay, bi or greedy man looking for sex,” Grindr founder Joel Simkhai told The Independent. Pretty self-explanatory, then.

Grindr comes in both free and subscription-based versions (Grindr Xtra) and works by presenting a grid of men, arranged from nearest to farthest away. If you’re keen, tapping on a picture will display a brief profile for that user, as well as the option to chat, send pictures, the share one’s location. There are even ‘Tribes’ on Grindr like Bear, Twink and Jock to declare your own sexy type.

Perfect For: Gay, bi and curious guys who don’t want to beat around the bush.

#6 Match.com

Launched in 1995, Match.com has arguably pioneered the Internet dating industry and is even the leading division of IAC, the umbrella corporation for apps like Tinder and OKCupid. Fitting then, that for slightly more mature dating hopefuls, Match.com is where it’s at.  Offering users a ‘freemium’ dating experience, Match works by setting up a profile and flirting with ‘winks’ to have prospective dates delivered daily.

If you’ve got a subscription, you can see who has checked out your profile and liked your pictures, plus, it works on Android Wear and Apple Watch if you’re online dating on the go. If you’re more serious about finding a relationship, or perhaps you’re on the hunt for a soulmate, Match.com is the dating app for you.

Median Age: 45

Perfect For: Older dating hopefuls looking for more than a hook-up.

#7 Bumble

Sometimes described as the “feminist” dating app, Bumble aims to change the rules of the game and “reverse gender roles” so women have to make the first move. Bumble was started by Whitney Wolfe, who was ousted from Tinder. “I wanted to do something that would promote a responsible user online. There’s a lot of room to be negligent and nasty to each other,” Wolfe told Business Insider. “I figured, whatever I do next I want to narrow that down.”

Bumble works in the same way Tinder does, with profiles and swiping, but if you accidentally swipe left when you were meant to swipe right, you can shake your phone to undo it and while both men and women can swipe, only women can start the conversation. In fact, once you’ve met a match, female users only have 24 hours to start chatting before time’s up and the connection disappears forever.

Median Age: 26

Perfect For: Shy (or maybe lazy) guys who don’t like the pressure of initiating a conversation and like a confident woman.

#8 Happn

One of the more recent dating apps is Happn, an online dating service with the tagline “find the people you’ve crossed paths with,” which it does by helping you discover other singles within a 250 mile radius. Again, Happn works like Tinder with dating profiles hooked up via Facebook, but instead of swiping right or left, Happn uses GPS tracking to present you with a list of people near you. Then it tells you how many times you’ve crossed paths and a map of roughly where it happened. If the feeling is mutual and both parties hit the red love heart, you’ll have a ‘crush’ and can start messaging.

“There are thousands of possible connections that sadly remain impossible. To solve this, Fabien Cohen, talent growth-hacker, Didier Rappaport, serial entrepreneur and Antony Cohen, computer engineer, decided to create an app. An app that loves coincidence and boosts luck again,” Happn’s founders told Marie Claire.

Perfect For: Guys who are looking for dates in highly populated cities, or desperate to court their cute barista.

#9 Raya

Describing itself as “an exclusive dating and networking platform for people in creative industries,” new app Raya is for the upper echelons of the online dating world. Members are admitted by a secretive, anonymous committee, and are evaluated by an algorithm, which considers “overall Instagram influence, who recommended the applicant, and how many active Raya members follow the applicant on Instagram”. No wonder Raya has also been referred to as the “Illuminati Tinder”.

One writer from NYMag claimed to have seen everyone from “pro skateboarders to Sports Illustrated swimsuit models, Dancing With The Stars professional dancers, a YouTube beauty guru, the designer of a streetwear brand popularised by Kanye West, a teen celebrity chef, and Moby.” Raya is all very hush-hush and with a minimal and slightly retro interface, it seems like the equivalent of that super hipster hole-in-the-wall nightclub you can never seem to get into.

Perfect For: Daters with high standards and a penchant for hipsters who want to avoid the cliche and keep their romances discreet and uber cool.

#10 Zoosk

With tens of millions of users (or Zooskers) and available in more than 80 countries and 25 languages, Zoosk is a dating app with one of the largest membership bases. It’s sort of an all-rounder kind of app, as it doesn’t make users fill out their profiles unless they want to and uses a ‘Behavioural Matchmaking’ system that analyses a user’s pattern throughout the site to determine who they’d be most suited to romantically and/or sexually.

Offering this kind of flexibility means that Zoosk is what you make it, whether you’re looking for a one night stand or a long-term fling. After signing up, you’ll get a daily “mutual match” in your email that shows you someone else’s profile and allows you to click yes or no to being interested. But here’s the catch – if the feeling is mutual, you’ll get another email but you won’t know who your match is until you pay. A one month Zoosk membership will set you back $29.95 USD.

Perfect For: Guys who want something casual and don’t mind paying to play.

Facebook's Giant Drone Will Provide Internet Access To The World
Facebook's Giant Drone Will Provide Internet Access To The World

Mark Zuckerberg is on his way to reaching Elon Musk levels of global domination with his most ambitious project to date.

Standing in the middle of the Sonora Desert near the Mexican border, Zuckerberg was on hand to oversee the launch of Aquila, an unmanned carbon fibre plane spanning just over the width of a 737 jet. It’s sole task? To beam the internet into the most remote parts of the world for up to 1.6 billion people. That’s right. As in Oprah levels of: ‘You get internet! And you get internet! And you get internet!’

08-1024x683

Backing Zuckerberg was a team of the brightest technicians who managed to get the plane soaring for a reliable 96 minutes before it landed safely in the restricted airspace of Yuma Proving Ground. Martin Gomez who is Facebook’s director of aeronautical platforms has flown over twenty-three scaled-down test flights in the past before today’s maiden flight. The test collected vital data on the drone’s four motors, the autopilot system, battery life and radio communications which will be used to drastically refine the technology.

Facebook’s internet beaming drone still has some way to go since this version flew without solar panels, high-altitude batteries, internet antennas and other equipment bound for the final craft. In Facebook’s opinion though, the result is still a major milestone. Aquila comes just as Google begins work on expanding internet accessibility with their own development of drones and high-altitude balloons.

Zuckerberg appears to be a bit more creative in his approach to providing internet to the world through the use of new wireless antennas, lasers, and satellites to get the job done. It may even look like a philanthropic endeavour but it’s important to note that the movement is also a win-win situation for both companies as global connectivity will benefit both Facebook and Google’s services.

20-1024x683

With over a billion people still living in remote areas without mobile broadband services, Facebook is adamant on being one of the first to tap into this population. To build momentum for its greater cause, Facebook is planning to release the blueprints for its drones and future internet devices for local governments and ISP services to use.

Once Aquila is finished it will operate within the Earth’s stratosphere to avoid detrimental weather. The drones will also feature solar panels across its expansive wings to allow it to stay in orbit for months at a time.

How To Have The Perfect Nap, According To Science
How To Have The Perfect Nap, According To Science

Scientists and doctors agree: napping is good for you. Not only does a sneaky snooze improve alertness, it can also relieve stress, increase productivity, and boost overall happiness.

But not all naps are created equal. There’s an art to optimal napping, as tested and verified by science. Here’s what the pros say about making the most of your midday shuteye.

Choose The Right Time Of Day

Sleeping at different times of day produces different results. A morning nap is more likely to contain REM sleep (or dream sleep), which can be emotionally calming. An afternoon nap, on the other hand, is more likely to contain restorative and memory-boosting deep sleep called “slow wave sleep”. The idea is to base your napping hours around which benefits you’re looking to obtain, but there’s a catch. The best possible nap contains a balance of both kinds of sleep, so Dr. Sara Mednick, a sleep researcher and the author of a book about napping, has created an interactive tool to help determine your ideal nap time based on when your alarm rings in the morning.

Choose The Right Length

There are also two sides to the perfect nap length coin. According to studies, naps in the 10 to 20 minute range produce improvements in energy levels and cognitive function. A 30 minute nap has similar benefits, but results in grogginess known as “sleep inertia” afterwards. In order to skip the sleep hangover, experts recommend taking a lengthier snooze if you need more than 20 minutes. Napping for an hour and a half allows you to complete a full REM cycle and gloss over the grogginess.

Choose Caffeine

It seems counterintuitive to down a wake-up beverage just before dozing, but research in England has confirmed its positive effects. Drink a cup of coffee, then curl up for a 20 minute nap. The caffeine will hit your system just as the drowsiness dissipates, leaving you with a heroic energy boost to blast through the remainder of your day.

Elon Musk Reveals New Master Plan Which Includes Ride Sharing
Elon Musk Reveals New Master Plan Which Includes Ride Sharing

Elon Musk first announced his grand plan ten years ago with his ambitions for an electric car future starting with the Tesla Model S and Model X. Today he has outlined the next audacious phase of this grand electric dream.

Speaking of his “Secret Tesla Motors Master Plan”, Musk revealed that his new goal was to create solar-powered roofs with seamless battery storage “that just works”. More specifically, Musk wants the Powerwall energy storage system in homes to be fully integrated with solar power technology as one product, making energy consumption and regeneration a standalone affair.

On the transportation side Musk is looking to expand his electric vehicle portfolio to include both trucks and buses in future. The most exciting development however comes with his announcement of autonomous driving technology which aims to be ten times safer than manual driving.

Giving Uber a run for its money, Musk also dropped a bomb on the lucrative ride sharing party: “You will also be able to add your car to the Tesla shared fleet just by tapping a button on the Tesla phone app and have it generate income for you while you’re at work or on vacation, significantly offsetting and at times potentially exceeding the monthly loan or lease cost,” he said.

“This dramatically lowers the true cost of ownership to the point where almost anyone could own a Tesla.”

Those keen to find out more can head to the full blog post here or read the excerpt from Musk’s post below.

“We must at some point achieve a sustainable energy economy or we will run out of fossil fuels to burn and civilization will collapse.”

The reason we had to start off with step 1 was that it was all I could afford to do with what I made from PayPal. I thought our chances of success were so low that I didn’t want to risk anyone’s funds in the beginning but my own. The list of successful car company startups is short. As of 2016, the number of American car companies that haven’t gone bankrupt is a grand total of two: Ford and Tesla. Starting a car company is idiotic and an electric car company is idiocy squared.

Also, a low volume car means a much smaller, simpler factory, albeit with most things done by hand. Without economies of scale, anything we built would be expensive, whether it was an economy sedan or a sports car. While at least some people would be prepared to pay a high price for a sports car, no one was going to pay $100k for an electric Honda Civic, no matter how cool it looked.

Part of the reason I wrote the first master plan was to defend against the inevitable attacks Tesla would face accusing us of just caring about making cars for rich people, implying that we felt there was a shortage of sports car companies or some other bizarre rationale. Unfortunately, the blog didn’t stop countless attack articles on exactly these grounds, so it pretty much completely failed that objective.

However, the main reason was to explain how our actions fit into a larger picture, so that they would seem less random. The point of all this was, and remains, accelerating the advent of sustainable energy, so that we can imagine far into the future and life is still good. That’s what “sustainable” means. It’s not some silly, hippy thing — it matters for everyone.

By definition, we must at some point achieve a sustainable energy economy or we will run out of fossil fuels to burn and civilization will collapse. Given that we must get off fossil fuels anyway and that virtually all scientists agree that dramatically increasing atmospheric and oceanic carbon levels is insane, the faster we achieve sustainability, the better.

11 Creative Ways To Pull Off The Industrial Look At Home
11 Creative Ways To Pull Off The Industrial Look At Home

Stripped bare, exposed and gritty. No, we’re not talking about your bedroom antics; we’re talking industrial inspiration for the home.

Industrial style hinges on minimalism and utility using simple materials and few colours. Don’t have a home endowed with steel columns and timber trusses? No worries. Whether you live in a dingy loft above a Thai restaurant, a suave high-rise apartment or your mum’s garage, it is always possible to achieve the industrial look. Read on to learn how to achieve a mechanical, yet cosy, home with industrial design elements that will transform a drab pad into the ‘loft’ of your dreams.

Since Andy Warhol moved into The Factory in NY in the 1960s, warehouse spaces and dingy factories have attracted cool kids like a kale smoothie on a summer day in Double Bay. Industrial style has remained fundamentally unchanged in the intervening years, with a slightly sleeker end result.

#1 Monochrome Is The New Black

monochrome

Industrial design is punctuated with black, white and grey accents. Photo frames, trims, mirrors, appliances and haberdashery in shades of black and grey will allow for maximum impact.

Get handy with a paintbrush and consider dip painting. For example, timber table and chair legs can be painted ankle deep in black or grey for instant industrial flair.

Tip: Black sheets are not recommended, unless you fancy having all your bodily fluids visible to the naked eye. Grey and white bed lined is more forgiving.

#2 Be An Exhibitionist

1-Industrial-pipe-railings

We’re not suggesting you walk around nude with the curtains up, unless you’re into that kind of thing. Instead, leave nail heads exposed and embrace construction elements that are visible – like beams and brick.

#3 Wheel-y Good

wheel

Don’t know what casters are? Well, it’s time to get acquainted because these little wheels give an instant industrial update to any piece of furniture. Oversized casters produce the best effect and can be put on almost anything: coffee tables, dining tables or kitchen and bathroom storage units.

More than just stylish, casters make rearranging a breeze and are convenient for those impromptu Fifa marathons that hijack your living room every Friday night

#4 Reclaimed Or Weathered Wood

lights

Forget perfectly polished floors and shop around for weathered varieties that have character and industrial style. Reclaimed wooden boards are great because they welcome wear and tear, eliminating concerns about scratching newly installed floors. In fact, a few extra scratches will add more character to the room. You can also turn reclaimed floorboards into interesting wall panelling or headboards.

#5 Got Brick?

brick-wall-apartment

If you’re lucky enough to have exposed brick walls in your home then you have a head start. Make the most of your bricks and mortar and leave them relatively bare (if you feel the walls need some adornment, consider a flag or row of picture frames).

For those of us without a brick abode, brick veneer is an affordable alternative. A feature wall or kitchen splashback are just a couple of places to start.

#6 Let There Be Light

bubls

There are some keywords to keep in mind when shopping for industrial-style lights, lamps and fixtures: pendant, porcelain, ribbed glass, cast aluminium and steel are just a few. Bulb cages, Edison bulbs and pulley lighting designs are effective, but our favourites are those of the scissor accordion variety. Not only are they industrial and mechanical in appearance, but their ability to be extended make them extremely versatile.

#7 Arty Farty

industrial-home-details_exposed-brick

Big, bright and bold pieces of art are the perfect way to personalise your industrial outfit. Own your own home? Paint a mural directly onto a stark white wall or exposed brick.

#8 Concrete Jungle

A staple building material of the industrial age was concrete, and the humble mixture of water and powdered cement is enjoying a revival. Concrete floors are particularly popular and provide a masculine functionality to the home. Plus, concrete floors (polished or matte) are functional, easy to clean, and will last a lifetime.

Concrete cinder blocks make unique bookshelves, while sinks, bathtubs and concrete bench and table-tops are subtle ways of incorporating concrete into your home. If you have wooden floorboards, this will make for a pleasing contrast.

#9 Stylish Steel

The old maxim of ‘less is more’ applies when it comes to steel. A house littered with steel accents like doorknobs, kitchen appliances, picture frames and other little bits and bobs will add a cohesive finish to your industrial pad.

#10 Wrought Iron

Wrought iron is a great way to bring industrial charm into any room. Brushed nickel will also do the trick, as will cast iron and copper. Consider a chic wrought iron bed with a bedside table on wheels and makeshift wooden headboard to complete the look.

Can’t afford expensive industrial interiors that look like they were dragged off the side of the road? Put your handyman hat on and make a few pieces yourself. Pick up some timber and culverts and make your own table, create a sawhorse workbench, or pop out to Bunnings for a bunch of pipefittings and sheets of wood to create interesting wall-mounted shelves.

Spending thousands of dollars of faux-rusted metal décor and industrial-inspired items can be counterproductive to authentic industrial design. Instead, pair a couple of expensive pieces with DIY jobs, hardware shop pieces and council clean-up finds.

Drake Spent $2 Million Dollars On Solid-Gold Sneakers

If you’re Drake, there’s little that money can’t buy and when it comes to sneakers, clearly no expense is spared. The 29-year-old rapper recently took to Instagram to show off a new pair OVO Air Jordan 10’s made from solid 24k gold.

The sneakers, which apparently cost a cool $2 million, were commissioned by multidisciplinary artist Matthew Senna who has made a name for himself for his work with fine metals, casting sneakers, roses, ski masks and other unexpected objects into gold and brass. Some of his stylish celebrity clientele include singer Post Malone, footballer Victor Cruz and creative director of UNITED ARROWS & SONS, Motofumi “Poggy” Kogi.

Senna himself also Instagrammed Drake’s solid-gold kicks, with the hashtag #theseweigh100pounds. Not like he’s bragging or anything, but 100 pounds of gold is apparently about the equivalent of 4 ingots (or gold bars).

Drake’s gold sneakers are the cherry on top of his ongoing collaboration with the Jordan Brand. The Toronto rapper’s white 10s sold out last September, and the black versions also flew off the shelves the following February.

With the hashtag #TheseAreNotToWear, it’s clear that @champagnepapi is guarding his million dollar J’s with his life.
