The Singapore Sling is a cocktail with a rather confusing history. It’s based on the classic sling formula for cocktail making, but throughout its long history, has undergone so many variations that recreating the original recipe is practically impossible. Nevertheless, it still remains a popular choice for cocktail drinkers, appearing on most menus (particularly in hotels).
While the exact recipe may be debated, everyone can agree the Singapore Sling should at least contain gin and be red in its appearance. An attractive drink for sure, it’s also one that teeters on the sweeter side of the palette and depending on the sort of hotel you find yourself drinking one in, could have all manner of fruit attached to the glass.
But a classic it remains, so knowing how to make one at home will have your friends and family slinging your praises. But first, a history lesson.
Origin Of The Singapore Sling
The Singapore Sling, in its earliest iteration, is said to have been invented sometime around 1915 by Ngiam Tong Boon, a bartender from Hainan – the smallest and southernmost province of China – who was working at the Raffles Hotel, Singapore. The Raffles Hotel, founded in 1887, was – and still is – a hangout for the rich and famous. The Colonial-style hotel was named after British statesmen Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the founder of colonial-era Singapore.
Ngiam worked in Long Bar within the hotel’s walls, which as Gin Foundry claims had “images of ‘flapper’ girls and suited young men adorning the walls.” The bar is not only the place the Singapore Sling was invented, but was also host to famous faces such as Charlie Chaplin and playwright Noel Coward.
When it was first conceived, the Singapore Sling was actually called a gin sling. A sling – which as a naming convention came from the German word ‘schlingen’ meaning “to swallow” – is a drink that is made with sugar, hot or cold water, nutmeg and a spirit. Modern-day practices now see a sling made with gin, sweet vermouth, lemon juice, simple syrup, Angostura bitters and soda water, of course, traditionalists may see this an entirely incorrect.
The Singapore Sling nomenclature is no doubt now to commemorate the country in which it was invented.
Singapore Sling Ingredients
While the naming and time of the invention of the Singapore Sling are resolutely agreed upon, the actual ingredients that go into making one are subject of serious debate. D.A. Embury, an American attorney and author of cocktail encyclopedia Fine Art of Mixing Drinks, was once quoted as saying “Of all the recipes published, I have never seen any two that were alike.”
Despite various bars and authors citing their own variations, the ‘official’ ingredients list reads like this:
- Gin
- Cherry Brandy
- Cointreau
- Bénédictine
- Grenadine
- Pineapple juice
- Fresh lime juice
- Angostura bitters
- Pineapple slice and cocktail cherry to garnish
- Cocktail shaker
- Highball glass
There may be other variations that you have already come across, but they should all at least follow the conventional formula of a gin sling, which combines gin, citrus, a sweetener and sofa.
Classic Singapore Sling Recipe Measurements
With the extensive list of ingredients to hand, the official Singapore Sling measurements read like this:
- 30ml/1oz gin (Gordon’s, Beefeater, Bombay Sapphire)
- 15ml/0.5oz cherry brandy (Vok, Badel)
- 7.5ml/0.25oz Cointreau
- 10ml/0.3oz Grenadine
- 12ml/0.4oz pineapple juice
- 15ml/0.5oz lime juice
- 1 dash Angostura bitters
How To Make The Singapore Sling
- Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice
- Shake well until chilled
- Strain into a highball glass
- Garnish with pineapple and glacé cherry on a cocktail stick
This method is, unsurprisingly, also subject of debate. Some suggest you should strain the mixture over fresh ice in the highball glass, while others say you should top it up with soda water. Because there are far too many variations to list, we’d suggest you simply have fun with experimenting with methods and ingredients until you find something you truly enjoy.
How To Drink A Singapore Sling
If you’re not able to make it to an upmarket hotel to drink a Singapore Sling from an elegant piece of glassware while on a hot date – or at least, the drinks you always hope to have after a successful dinner – then the next best way to enjoy is one on a lilo or sunbed, around the pool of a three-star hotel on the Spanish coast.
Singapore Sling FAQ
Widely regarded as Singapore’s national drink, the Singapore Sling is a must-order when you are in the island. The iconic cocktail conceived in the Raffles Hotel will cost you around $30. This cocktail goes relatively easy on the alcohol, usually mixing up to 15 percent ABV. This is average for highball drinks, like vodka tonic and 7 and 7. While the pink color of the cocktail is definitely giving girly vibes, the Singapore Sling’s well-balanced and refreshing flavor is also well-loved by the men drinker population. We’ve reported several times here at DMARGE about how we should all be using the lockdown time afforded to us to put some extra effort and hours in at the gym. Not only will it do your body a world of favours, but it can have numerous benefits for your mental health too.
One man who has clearly taken that advice on board and has decided to hit the weights in place of playing regular soccer is Sergio Ramos. The Spanish defender was never lacking in muscle, but his recent Instagram posts show he’s determined to become even stronger in preparation for the hopeful return of the Spanish La Liga.

On March the 19th, Ramos posted a picture of himself on day seven of quarantine, according to the caption. In the image, we can see him in his home gym with an enviable rig, with virtually no signs of body fat to be seen. Fast forward to May the 19th and it’s abundantly clear the most carded player in La Liga has piled on the muscular pounds.
So what exactly is Ramos’ secret? We asked Ben Lucas, founder of Flow Athletic, to give his professional opinion. Ben told us that while it’s clear he’s been exercising a lot, a lot of his transformation can be put down to a good nutritional diet.
“In order to achieve [this] look in such a short amount of time his diet would have also been a factor. I would assume he has been limiting alcohol and sugar given his body and an increase in protein. This could be in the form of eggs, meat and supplements.”
But of course, even though what happens in the kitchen is incredibly important, what you do in the gym is an equally prevalent factor. “Exercise wise it looks like the biggest changes have taken place in his chest and abs,” says Ben.
And if you want to achieve a rig like Ramos, Ben has provided a few exercises to get you on your way.
- Bench Press – “Ensure you go up in weight to appropriately build the chest muscles. The bench press can also work your abs.”
- Push-ups – “While push-ups are great for working your chest, they are incredibly good for your posture, assuming they’re performed correctly.”
- Weighted Squats – “These are great for the legs, glutes and abs. While ab-specific workouts are great for getting results, compound exercises, such as squats with a heavy weight, are great for building abs as well.”
- Weighted Russian Twists – “These help work and build definition in the obliques.”
Indeed, even without checking his Instagram feed, Ben has been able to single out some exercises that Sergio has posted evidence of him performing, such as the weighted squats.

International travel came to a screeching halt in March. Now, in many places, restrictions are easing. But as the bulk of us start looking at quaint domestic trips and governments consider creating travel "bubbles" and "corridors" to keep second and third waves of The Pandemic under control, it seem...

If there’s one thing that can separate guys in Australia and America it’s grooming regimes, and never has there been a better time to witness that than during the current worldwide lockdown. Not only have guys the world over taken to cutting their own hair (with varying results of success), but it has also sparked up a ‘quarantine beard’ trend that has seen guys grow out their facial fuzz…again, to varying (to put it mildly) degrees of success.
How do we know? Well, as with any other incremental updates in people’s everyday lives (and out of sheer boredom right now, we presume) that get posted to social media, quarantine beards have a place all of their own online.
We’re a good couple of months into the global quarantine since most countries introduced lockdown towards the end of March. Ample time then for guys to work on their manes, but as we mentioned earlier, when it comes to guys in Australia and America, the two nations take a very different approach to how a beard should look, when nobody is around to see it.
Being an Australian publication, we’ll focus on our own first. Here are a few examples of how Aussie guys are taking a more slack approach to their beards. Sydney-based YouTuber of all things gaming, Ninja Kuma, perhaps accurately predicts how he’ll look if he chooses to grow his beard out. Perhaps it should be of no surprise to learn that Tweets posted a few days later show him facial-fuzz-free.

Young Greg Norman, also a Sydney resident, regales his experiences of growing a beard that we’re confident all guys can relate to; the dreaded itchy phase. We assume he’s learning how to channel inner patience and resilience, but he’ll come out of lockdown a much stronger man.
Day 6 of quarantine beard: I have embraced the itchy face and my beard is beginning to teach me so much more than I ever imagined

There will be some men who’ll read Skeelsy’s Tweet and come up with other ways of calling him a “chicken”. Nobody will ever grow a perfect beard first try, especially without a little bit of maintenance. But the lockdown is the perfect time to forget about upkeep and to let the jawfro do its thing. Chicken.
Quarantine beard update: needed a trim to prevent it’s transition from ‘quarantine’ to ‘apocalypse’
— Skeelsy (@skeelsyshoota) March 24, 2020
Across the pond, however, Americans appear to be taking a much more serious approach to their beards, ensuring they’re trimmed to absolute perfection as if they were maintaining a garden hedge.
Take Brooklyn resident Sam White, for example. Just a week ago he posted this image of himself with a beard that is trimmed and maintained to near-on perfection. Good coverage, good length and no patches. We’d be surprised to him shave it off anytime soon.

Philip Alan of Los Angeles, California, posted this image of his dad growing out his quarantine beard, making him look like an absolute don. Pierce Brosnan lookalike anyone?

American actor Bruce Campbell of Evil Dead fame has been getting in on the quarantine beard action. If we look similar when we hit 60, we’ll be happy.
Gonna be bluntly honest here. Not NEARLY enough of you are talking about how insanely handsome Bruce Campbell is with his quarantine beard because HOLY SHIT. pic.twitter.com/j5Hni4BxcS
— St. Sluggo, friendly neighborhood anarchist (@SaintSluggo) May 14, 2020
Of course, being America, not everybody will get things right. Case in point is Trevor Noah. We feel we don’t need to chip in here, as this tweet from Ashley St Clair sums it up perfectly.
And the award for most pathetic quarantine beard goes to Trevor Noah pic.twitter.com/30UXTjKVwU

(@stclairashley) May 16, 2020
It’s clear then, that Australia can learn a thing or two from America (just not from Trevor). But if all else fails, they can turn to poster-boy Chris Hemsworth, who proves there’s nothing wrong with ditching the longer hair in favour of some designer stubble.

When you think of the world’s natural wonders, The Grand Canyon, The Northern Lights, The Great Barrier Reef and – of course – Mount Everest probably spring to mind (if you know your geography you probably think of Victoria Falls, The Harbour of Rio di Janeiro and Paricutin too).
But the view of one of the most dramatic natural wonders – Mount Everest – has for years been obscured by pollution.
Now, in a view “not seen in years” (News.com.au), Mount Everest is visible once again from Kathmandu Valley, over 200km away.
Granted; it’s not Babylon, rather a new perspective on an existing wonder, but still, the stunning image, taken by photographer Abhushan Gautam for Nepali Times, has resonated with people, revealing the environmental silver linings of the current pandemic.
The photo shows the white Himalayan ranges in the background of the photograph with an arrow pointing out Mount Everest.

The image also raised questions around what we are (or are not) going to do to maintain these kinds of natural upsides, which, as global travel came to a screeching halt, have been seen everywhere from Venice to Miami.
#COVID19Pandemic has proven the benefits of reducing fossil fuel consumption on public health and national economy.
What are we going to do to maintain it?

The photo also comes after, earlier this month, various residents in northern India told SBS the lockdown had given them a view many had not seen in 30 years.
“We can see the snow-covered mountains clearly from our roofs,” Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, a pollution reduction activist, told SBS.

If you’re a regular LinkedIn user – if you’re not it’s one of the best tools you could arm yourself with right now – then you will likely have encountered the dreaded spam messenger. We’re talking about the complete randoms who pop up in your inbox, the ones who are “Just reaching out…” or “I came across your profile and wondered if…”.They’re usually annoying, usually not relevant and almost always sent straight to the bin. But, as we’ve found before when speaking to the experts, reaching out to other LinkedIn users and building your network is something to be encouraged, especially if you’re searching for a new job. And we imagine right, a lot of you out there are dealing with the dilemma or waiting out the pandemic to get your old job back, or deciding whether to change career completely. To find out the right way to go about “reaching out”, we once again turned to Joe Ryan, a partner at Australian consultancy 4Twenty to get the lowdown on the dos and don’ts of LinkedIn etiquette.Joe immediately tells us that you should try and tailor your opening line depending on the person you’re trying to form a connection with. “Personalisation is hugely important when building your network as you will be able to leverage from it at a later date.”As for opening lines, well, LinkedIn is hardly Tinder – although some users and algorithms may suggest otherwise – and you’re not trying to hook up with them. At least, not in the traditional sense. Instead, you should keep it personal, without being creepy.“I always like to send them a short note along with the connection…”, says Joe, “…clarifying to them that I’m ‘building out my network’; ‘would love to connect with you, we do a lot of our own work in your space.”He adds it “doesn’t need to be any more detailed than that”, i.e. you don’t want to reveal you’ve found their Instagram profile and are keen to know what went down on their 2014 Hawaii holiday.
“These brief but personal introductions are to the point and encourage them to view your profile and accept your connection.”
If you’re accepted, then you’ll do well to send a quick follow-up message saying “‘thanks for connecting’, it’s courteous and if the opportunity is right, it will initiate the conversation.”Joe adds that you can choose to be a little more personal if you want (although as we mentioned earlier, still keep it professional), by “noting things from their profile such as how many/specific mutual connections you have, or you can comment on their recent activity such as a post they may have liked.”
“You can even draw on personal interests the two of you may have”, based on information in their LinkedIn profile, of course.
“These will all be well-received points within your message and all will confirm to the recipient that this isn’t just another spam InMail and you as the sender has taken the time to write to them.”In some ways, connecting with someone through LinkedIn can be likened to picking up at a bar, you want to come across confident, not arrogant. Once you’ve made a connection, well, then whatever happens after that in or outside of work is at your own discretion.
