Every January the technology journalists of the world, and thousands of consumer technology companies converge for a marathon of press conferences and exhibits to reveal products and services we’ll be using in the near and distant future.
We flew to Las Vegas, sat through the briefings, experienced all the latest products and put a strong filter on what is really exciting for us in 2019.
The LG Signature Oled TV R
If the only place to keep your TV has the potential to block a great view then here is a TV that can vanish entirely. This is a television that has a screen that can roll up and down into a seriously impressive soundbar. The screen is a 65 inch OLED with 4K resolution so when you’re watching Billions, it’ll look damn good. The audio from that soundbar? Stunning. Inside that rectangular prism lives a 4.2-channel, 100W front-firing Dolby Atmos audio system which can also be used without the TV raised for a great home stereo.
Foldimate
Look, no one loves doing laundry, but if you’ve been watching any of the Marie Kondo show, it’s time to neaten up. We found a machine that will make you look like your life is in order. The Foldimate is an appliance that you’d keep in the laundry and feed it your t-shirts, polo tops, pillow cases and even button up shirts. In seconds you’ll find them folded and ready in the bottom drawer. We aren’t even kidding and it takes seconds.
LG HomeBrew
In prior years, if you wanted to start making your own beer it was like a chem-lab you ran in the garage and it likely tasted bad. LG have essentially created a Nespresso machine for beer. Through a partnership with Muntons for the brewing expertise, you’ll be able to make five litres of beer through capsules used in the LG HomeBrew. It will take two weeks to go through the brewing process and you’ll have American IPA, American Pale Ale, English Stout, Belgian-style Witbier, and Czech Pilsner to choose from.
Whirlpool Connected Hub Wall Oven
If you’re feeling the pressure of becoming a better cook then a little guidance can help. The cookbooks are old school, and no one wants to go to cooking school. This oven from Whirlpool will help you though. With a transparent LCD screen on the oven door you can be guided through your next meal with an online database of recipes, view how the meal inside looks from your smartphone and even receive suggestions based on food preferences of the people in the family and the amount of time you have to prepare dinner.
Impossible Burger Version 2.0
The mad scientists at Impossible Foods are on a mission to remove the need for us to have animals in the food chain. This isn’t with a goal of saving the lives of animals, it’s the better the environmental impact of millions of cows that graze and pollute the earth. They developed a burger patty to replicate the look, texture and taste of a beef patty. It’s made in a lab and we tasted it and were left speechless.

When it comes to car accidents, Sydney knows how to make a headline. Last year it was the unfortunate valet driver who left a $300,000 Porsche wedged underneath an orange Subaru. This year, however, has started off in even more dramatic fashion.
Last night, Sydney’s Inner West Police Area Command’s Facebook page posted photographic evidence of one of the most bizarre car crashes in recent memory, which took place around 3pm yesterday.
“In other news… After an accident today, a car flipped and landed the back of a truck at Macquarie Fields,” the social media post read.
The Sydney Morning Herald followed up with more information, explaining exactly how the man managed to land his Holden Astra in the back of a tipper truck: “Emergency services were called to the scene at Evelyn Street in Macquarie Fields about 3pm after a 38-year-old man hit a trailer ramp, causing him to flip and land in the rear of the parked truck, according to police.”
“Police said it was unclear if speed was a factor in the accident.”
“The driver of the car, who was the sole occupant, was trapped for a short time before being taken to Liverpool Hospital with a shoulder injury,” the article continues.
As the accident was not fatal, other Sydney residents felt a little light hearted ribbing was only appropriate…
Although some of them seem to be confused as to how much the car was really worth….
Others were actually quite funny.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has announced he is separating from his wife of 25 years, novelist MacKenzie Bezos. In a statement uploaded to Twitter, the world’s richest man revealed that a successful “trial separation” gave them the confidence to make the decision final.
“As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separation, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends,” the 54-year-old billionaire wrote on Twitter.
— Jeff Bezos (@JeffBezos) January 9, 2019
The tweet suggests the split was on good terms, with Jeff remarking: “We feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married.”
“If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again.”
In response, many have praised the pair’s maturity, while going through a challenge most often associated with resent and bitterness:
…a dignified separation. Well-done to both of you!

Some went as far as to suggest that Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos’ divorce is classier than most peoples’ marriages…
That must be the most congenial, heartwarming divorce statement I’ve ever seen.

As reported by News.com, Jeff and his soon-to-be-ex-wife MacKenzie have an estimated net worth of more than $US136 billion ($A189 billion), mostly thanks to Jeff’s holdings in Amazon.
As they got married before Amazon existed, it’s unlikely they had a prenuptial agreement, meaning MacKenzie could be entitled to up to $60 billion dollars.
“People get prenuptial agreements when they have assets to protect,” said Stuart Slotnick, chairman of the matrimonial department of law firm Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney in New York City. “In this case, they had no real assets vis à vis Amazon because when they got married Amazon did not exist,” (News.com).
That said, the details of the couple’s divorce settlements are unknown, and “legal experts agree it’s unlikely to impact Amazon or turn bitter,” (News.com).
Also possible is that the pair got a postnuptial agreement instead, once Amazon took off, other legal experts have suggested.
MacKenzie does not hold any Amazon shares directly, meaning that if the split were ugly, there may have been concerns over Jeff Bezos liquidating shares and funnelling the money into assets that he could not be forced to split.
But even if that were the case, Liat Sadler, a San Francisco matrimonial lawyer told Reuters, “Spouses owe a fiduciary duty to one another… They have duties not to waste or devalue marital resources, and to keep the value of marital property as high as possible.”
“I don’t think there is an issue of concern for shareholders as to what will happen to Amazon because of the divorce.”
So the big question is: will Jeff buy out his wife or will MacKenzie will retain shares?
“If she trusts that he would manage Amazon well, either he should pay her for her share of the stock, or they could enter a more complicated agreement where she keeps stock and he keeps voting rights,” Sadler said.
In the meantime, the good people of Twitter have more pressing advice for the soon to be divorced couple.

If your typical workout consists of bench, squats, deadlifts and pull-ups you are probably in need of a little pick me up. And no: we aren’t talking about some taurine fuelled pre-workout, we’re talking about shaking up your routine.
Sound like you? Ben Simmons’ shred sessions could be just the inspiration you need. The young Melburnian has become a rising NBA star with the Philadelphia 76ers, and while his on-court prowess has impressed fans worldwide, his gym sessions could be your ticket to getting more shredded than you’ve ever been.
Whether it’s one-arm dumbbell rows, multidirectional core workouts or cable flys, Ben Simmons’ Instagram workout posts make use of the neglected areas of the gym you are soon to appreciate.
First off we have one arm dumbbell rows, an exercise which is great for developing a wider, thicker (i.e. visibly stronger) back.
View this post on Instagram
Top tip from Bodybuilding.com; “Concentrate on squeezing the back muscles once you reach the full contracted position. Also, make sure that the force is performed with the back muscles and not the arms.”
“The upper torso should remain stationary and only the arms should move. The forearms should do no other work except for holding the dumbbell; therefore do not try to pull the dumbbell up using the forearms.”
The next exercise he demonstrates (click through to the second image on the above Instagram post) is two-handed overhead cable flys. These are great for increasing shoulder and core strength, and teaching your upper body muscles to work together.
While the name sounds complex, it’s actually quite simple: Attach a stirrup handle to the high pulley, grab it with both hands, and pull across and over your body until your working hand is in front of the opposite cheek. Return to starting position.

The next exercise of Simmons’ we recommend is a one-handed fly pull (see above), which is a great way to vary your back workout—a great alternative to deadlifts or one-arm dumbbell rows, targeting the same muscles in a different way. This can be combined with an overhead shoulder press (with dumbbells), as you can see in the fourth slide of the Instagram image series above.

Simmons also showcases the dumbbell benchpress. This provides increased muscular hypotrophy and strength (compared to a barbell bench press), joint angle customisation (optimal for those recovering from injury), increased unilateral strength, increased range of motion and develops your stabilisation muscles.
Also important is stretching:

And—although we can’t perhaps all afford the fancy equipment for this one—dips…

If you want to mimic what Simmons was doing when he was picked up by The Sixers, look no further than this video (disclaimer: we can’t guarantee you’ll get drafted too).
What about using your phone between sets?
View this post on Instagram
A number of Simmons’ 4.5 million followers picked up on this, with comments like, “Get off the phone bro. Got work to do” and “Do you even lift” rolling in.
Commenters also picked up on the fancy looking dumbells which – if you are interested – are made by a company called Power Block (and are mega expensive).
In any case, Simmons explained his gym-sin by saying, “Man I had to switch the playlist,” (which 294 people liked), in response to the call-out comment, “Get off the phone bro,” (which received 89 likes).
This appears to indicate that phone use has now become so prolific that most guys are – if not engaging in it – at least understanding of it.
The final verdict? The ball’s in Simmons’ court. If he achieves his goal of being the best in the league this coming season, we’d say that’s a pretty strong case for permitting yourself a cheeky song change between sets.
Until then, we’d say zeroing in on the suffering is more likely to bring you the supersized results you crave.

If 0-100 in 3.6 seconds is your preferred alternative to a long black, Porsche have news for you: this year there will be a new 911 Cabriolet.
All set for open-top season, Porsche revealed in a press release today that the 911 Cabriolet will continue the decade long convertible tradition, established when Porsche unveiled the prototype of the first 911 Cabriolet at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt in September 1981.
Just as customers and fans were instantly captivated as the first open-top 911 variant rolled off the production line in 1982, it has been a constant feature in the model range ever since, and the wizards over at Stuttgart predict a similar response to their latest creation.
So: does it stack up? The model comes out in the second quarter of 2019; but will it live up to the hype? Here’s what we know so far.
“Australia. Six weeks after the Coupe’s launch, attention turns to the 911 Cabriolet. The open-top version of the iconic sports car will be launched in 2019 to almost unprecedented fanfare,” Porsche said in a press release.
“It includes all the innovative features of the Coupe, along with Cabriolet-specific advanced features such as new hydraulics, which get the roof opened and closed more quickly than ever.”
The fully-automatic soft top has an integrated glass rear window, while the soft top structure contains magnesium surface elements known as bows, which reliably prevent ballooning of the roof at high speeds. The soft top can be opened or closed at speeds up to 50 km/h. New roof hydraulics reduce opening time to around twelve seconds, while an electrically extendable wind deflector ensures that your neck is shielded from wind impact.
In other words: the new model echoes the modern lines of the Coupe, though it remains unmistakably a Porsche 911 in Cabriolet form.
The Cabriolet is initially available in both Carrera S with rear-wheel drive and Carrera 4S with all-wheel drive, both of which rely on a 2,981 cm³ charged six-cylinder boxer engine with 331 kW (450 PS) at 6,500 rpm and 530 Nm torque between 2,300 and 5,000 rpm.
Also noteworthy is that the drive efficiency has been increased and emissions reduced by way of an improved injection process. This power is delivered by a newly developed eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, enabling The Carrera S to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds (with optional Sport Chrono Package: 3.7 seconds) and reach speeds of up to 306 km/h.
For customers with a serious need for speed: The Carrera 4S goes from 0-100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds (with optional Sport Chrono Package: 3.6 seconds) and a top speed of 304km/h.
In terms of chassis, the new engine mounting position makes the Cabriolet even more torsionally rigid than its predecessor. Oh and the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sport chassis is now available for the 911 Cabriolet, providing those who opt for it with a more neutral feel on the road, thanks to the harder and shorter springs, the rigid front and rear anti-roll-bars, and the lowering of the chassis by ten millimetres.
The new open top 911 Cabriolet’s exterior design draws on earlier generations of the 911 and, according to a Porsche press release, “Looks wider, more self-assured and altogether more muscular than its predecessor.”
“Wider wings arch over the large 20-inch wheels at the front and 21-inch wheels at the rear,” the release continues, while, “The rear-wheel-drive models now match the bodywork width of the existing all-wheel models.”
Oh and they’ve also taken the opportunity to evoke a little history, what with the rear axle being 44 mm larger and the front end – generally 45 mm wider – reviving a traditional feature from earlier 911 generations: a forward-extended bonnet with a distinctive recess in front of the windscreen.
“Both elements lengthen the front of the vehicle and give it a dynamic look.”
The rear (of all models) is dominated by the significantly wider, variable-position spoiler and the continuous, seamless and elegant light bar. Also: with the exception of the front and rear sections, the entire outer skin is now made from aluminium.
The interior is similarly distinctive, with clear, straight lines and recessed instruments defining the dashboard. Next to the centrally positioned rev counter, two thin, frameless freeform displays deliver information to the driver, and—as in the original 911—the new dashboard covers the entire width between two horizontal wing levels.
The 911 Carrera S Cabriolet starts from $286,500 and the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet from $302,600, excluding on-road costs. The new models can be ordered now and will arrive in Australia from the second quarter of 2019.

As ‘woke’ global travellers we like to think of ourselves as doing right by our little blue ball. However, as soon as you start doing your best to reduce your impact, or inspire others to do the same, it’s as if a giant neon sign appears above your head (or below your Instagram feed) that says, “Roast me please.”
Whether you’ve decided to go vegan, stop using plastic straws or buy a keep cup, ridicule is often not far behind. And while people might snigger quietly about your dodgy haircut, activism is the one area of life where it appears even close family and friends delight in calling you out, face to face, to see how you react.
However, as Australian climate activists Joel Hayes and Keegan Taccori point out: “There are many different ways to go green,” and something is always better than nothing. So while it’s tempting to roll your eyes at the decision of a professional surfer (for instance) who burns tonnes of CO2 per year travelling the globe, to campaign against plastic straws, Joel and Keegan encourage us to see the bigger picture.
“What I think is most powerful,” Keegan tells us, “Is the conversations an individual can generate: if a pro surfer dedicates their career to campaign against plastics, they’re using the platform they have to create some serious impact amongst their fans. To me, this has quantifiably more ‘impact’ then the next pro surfer who flies around the globe and does not campaign for such a cause.”
“Lifestyle changes do need to be adapted and altered to fit within this, but it (going green) shouldn’t have to be at the detriment of someone’s livelihood.”
We’ll get back to that later. But first: who are these guys? Joel and Keegan are two young Aussie blokes that are spending two years driving a solar powered, 100% electric camper van from Alaska to Argentina, following what they have dubbed the Route Del Sol, in an effort to spread awareness about (and demonstrate one practical way of tackling) the global issue of anthropogenic climate change.
Joel, a 29 year old scientist from Tweed Heads started this journey, building a custom solar electric camper van with a company called Solarrolla. Posting about the expedition online he came in contact with Keegan, a 23 year old journalist from the Blue Mountains. After just two weeks of talking online—and yet to meet in person—Keegan was on a plane to Alaska, ready to embark on the 2 year expedition.
“We’re driving a solar powered, 100% electric camper van from Alaska to Argentina, and we’re the first people in the world to do it. We’re trying to establish an enormous online community with Route Del Sol to highlight our world’s transition towards renewable energy, and share the communities and individual’s stories that we meet along the way that are in this process.”
The pair are currently biding their time in Vancouver, Canada, as it is the middle of winter and there is not enough sun to continue their journey (they plan to begin the US leg in March). As they have some downtime on their hands we thought we’d ask (amongst other things) what possessed them—two complete strangers—to jump into a van together and travel halfway across the world.
D’Marge: So what made you consider doing a trip like this?
Keegan: Not much to be honest. I spoke to Joely for the first time on the phone and realised the potential for a project like this and how fun it sounded. Then I flew into Alaska two weeks later and we met for the first time!
Joel: (I spent) many night shifts at work conjuring up a crazy fun adventure like this that would prove a point about sustainability, lifestyle and travel. Then I thought there’s no better time than right now to make that happen.
View this post on Instagram
D’Marge: What made you pull the trigger?
Joel: I broke up with a long-term girlfriend, flew back to Australia and started seriously researching into the feasibility of it. I got into contact with Brett Belan from Solarrolla who was completely stoked on the idea and invited me to come live with him in Ashland, Oregon and he’d help make it happen (May, 2018). Then it was a matter of: can we pull this off before winter hits in Alaska? Apparently, the answer was yes.
D’Marge: Favourite moment so far?
Keegan: Definitely the frontal range of Kluane National Park up in the Yukon, where the white capped mountains TOWER straight above you. It’s absolutely gorgeous.
Joel: When I first drove off the ferry in Haines, Alaska. Everything suddenly felt so real and all I was thinking was “this is craaazy, what am I doing out here and does this van actually even work?!”
D’Marge: What is the best aspect of van life?
Joel: The freedom!! Without a doubt. The ability to be completely mobile, to be able to just jump in the driver’s seat and drive our home wherever we want. It allows for a sweet lifestyle balance of surfing, climbing, education and activism.
D’Marge: What is the most challenging aspect of van life?
Keegan: For Joel it would be that he’s an introvert, and so spending so much time in a confined space with me, an extrovert, would be the most challenging aspect. It’s about knowing how to give each other space when it’s needed, and also being in a location where that’s physically possible too.
D’Marge: How do you think we can, as a society, find the balance between “living a little” and looking after the plant?
Keegan: We need industrial and global sized change to make serious reductions of our greenhouse emissions, and to move towards alternatives rapidly faster than we are currently doing.
“Education and conversations are the building blocks of generating change.”
Without a doubt, an individual can make changes within their own lifestyle to help reduce their personal impact on the planet, but also need to be able to live a life which provides them happiness and comfort, which is a right as a human to want to strive for.
D’Marge: What’s your take on long distance flights, and their environmental impact?
Keegan: Unfortunately, there is no major viable alternative to international travel for long distances in a short amount of time, although there are innovative solutions out there. You can advocate for change through other methods without going abstinent, for example campaigning for renewable energy initiatives from your local government, buying an EV, demanding wholesalers to not use plastic, putting solar power on your roof or taking your bicycle to work every day.
If you do want to fly to the other side of the world to go travelling, don’t go for two weeks. Stay for a much longer period of time, and explore other places within that location. Make lifestyle changes that allows you the longevity of that trip, and make other conscientious decisions everyday about how you can help reduce your impact on the planet in other ways.
View this post on Instagram
D’Marge: Can you give us an example?
Keegan: An example is going vegetarian: I understand that as an individual (this) won’t make a difference to the animal agricultural industry. However, if I manage to generate at least 100 conversations each year around sustainable food practices, and 5 of those people just reduce their intake of beef (I’m seriously lowballing those numbers), that has a serious impact. Times that by the amount of conversations they will have the next year – it’s exponential growth.
“To all the keyboard warriors out there that try to hassle someone driving an Electric Vehicle because ‘it’s not truly green because of x, y, z’ but then jumps in their own petrol car and races down to the shops for milk instead of walking: it’s absolute hypocrisy.”
There’s many different ways to ‘go green’, but also many different levels of it. We all make decisions every single day, and the least anyone can do is to educate people to think more critically about their every day practices, and the industries they support as a consumer.
D’Marge: Where can I get an electric van like that!?
Keegan: There are plenty of EV’s on the market, you just need to google around! Unfortunately, our vehicle is quite rare otherwise everyone would be doing it. But hopefully by the end of this trip we would have generated enough hype around solar powered, electric van life that more and more engineers will be creating vehicles like this to put on the market and drop the cost down for your average customer.
