Step Inside America's Most Expensive Home (It Can Be Yours For $250M)
Step Inside America's Most Expensive Home (It Can Be Yours For $250M)

When most of us move, the checklist looks something like this: Does it have enough outlets? Is there ample closet space? Is there decent water pressure in the shower? Will my Ikea couch fit through the door?

But the man who moves into this sprawling pad won’t be “most of us,” and his checklist will involve a bowling alley, a helipad, a candy wall, and a squad of luxury cars.

Welcome to America’s most expensive home.

For US$250,000,000, this ultra-exclusive Bel Air abode could be yours. Those nine digits entitle you to 38,000 sq ft of mansion plus 17,000 sq ft of entertainment decks, spread out over four meticulously curated levels and boasting 270-degree views of the mountains, the ocean, and the Los Angeles skyline.

You may be wondering what could possibly fill so much square footage. The answer is two master suites, 10 oversized VIP guest suites, 21 bathrooms, three gourmet kitchens, two commercial elevators, two fully stocked champagne/wine cellars, and five bars. There’s also a state-of-the-art fitness centre, an 85-ft glass tile infinity pool, and a massage studio/wellness spa.

LA is the capital of the entertainment world, and in keeping with its A-list location, the mega-home leaves little opportunity for boredom. A 40-seat 4K Dolby theatre boasts a James Bond theme. A four-lane bowling alley/lounge connects to a room with custom glass foosball tables and a $200,000 candy wall that would make Willy Wonka jealous.

More than 100 art installations – including the actual helicopter from the ’80s TV show Airwolf – are placed throughout the space. With the flip of a switch by the pool, a massive outdoor hydraulic cinema-sized screen emerges. A pair of mini Sea-Doos and a small catamaran also come with the pad.

And then there’s the auto gallery. Below the infinity pool is a fleet of exotic cars and motorcycles worth more than $30 million, including a custom Rolls-Royce, a Bugatti, a vintage Allard, and a baby Formula 1 race car.

Read the listing here and prepare to gently weep.

Date Ideas In Sydney That Don't Involve Booze
Date Ideas In Sydney That Don't Involve Booze

Say what? We can’t be serious. Ah, but we are.

Listen up lover boy. It’s time to put on your big kid pants and replace some of that liquid courage with actual alpha male courage. A real man should always be capable of figuring out where to take a date without uttering the fatal line of dating: “Where do you feel like going?”

That’s the quickest way to send a potential date running for the hills so check yourself before you wreck yourself.

These are the coolest things you can do that don’t require you to set foot in a bar.

Sydney Observatory

astronomy-s6Without a doubt one of our favourite dat spots that doesn’t involve a drop of alcohol. This old dame offers evening tours where you can learn about the planets, solar system and nearby galaxies. You can look through telescopes and even purchase your date something in the gift shop – like a keyring. If you’re a nerdy type, an evening of astronomy is sure to be a hit.

Barrenjoey Lighthouse

barrenjoeyForgo the cliched picnic in a park for something a little more left of field. The scenic Barrenjoey Lighthouse is located on Barrenjoey Head at Palm Beach and features two cool little walking trek which are well worth the Instagram shot.

Your date will no doubt be impressed too with stunning ocean views from both sides of the head.

Price: Free

Art Gallery Of NSW

artYour date doesn’t need to be an art fiend to appreciate the heritage stone walls and extensive range of creations housed in the iconic Art Gallery of NSW.

The last time you visited the place would probably have been a school excursion but as a date spot you’ll have all the time you need to make small talk with just the right amount of distraction and noise. It’s also worth noting that the general exhibition area is free to visitors. Score and score.

Price: Free (For general exhibition area)

Royal Botanic Gardens

royal-botanic-gardens-image-credit-hamilton-lundOnce you’ve done all the artsy chit chat you can fit in a day, head out into the scenic and expansive greenery of Sydney’s Royal Botanic Gardens.

The location is fastidiously cared for and showcases some of Australia’s finest flora against the backdrop of Sydney. Again, just enough distraction for any man to keep the conversation flowing. Finding a spot with a view to park yourself is also a piece of cake given the park’s size.

Price: Free

Open Air Cinemas

openairSummer in Sydney means a host open air cinemas that seemingly pop out of nowhere for the warmer season. Currently there are three outdoor cinemas running over the period of February with some extending right through to April.

St. George Open Air Cinema located on the waters of Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair is undoubtedly the most upmarket with stunning harbour views, proper food stalls serving restaurant quality food and a dedicated bar to keep patrons hydrated as the sun goes down over the Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Not that you’ll be drinking on this date…

Not to be left out is the annual Moonlight Cinema located on grassy knolls of Sydney’s Centennial Park for an entirely different backdrop with a lot of green.

Finally we have a smaller contender in Bondi in the form of Ben & Jerrys Open Air Cinema which borrows the iconic beachside suburb’s amphitheatre for live music during the day and movies during the night.

Reading this after summer’s done and dusted? Don’t freak out. Winter is a perfect time for a spot of movie time with the date at the Golden Age Cinema & Bar.

Dessert With Anna Polyviou

annaYou might have seen her insane creations of sugar on Masterchef and you’ll also know that one way to a potential partner’s heart is through their stomach.

Well we say go big or go home. Make a reservation at Sydney’s Shangri-La Hotel where award-winning pastry chef Anna Polyviou has set up base to dish up some of the most audacious desserts Sydney has to offer.

No words can describe it. Just sight and taste. Major brownie points to be scored here if your date is a dessert fiend.

Price: Various – Anna Polyviou

Kayaking The Harbour

kayakIt’s certainly less cliche than riding a bike around parks and if they go overboard you can test your bravado by saving your date’s ass. There’s also the great scenery of Sydney to be taken in from a very different perspective.

It might be a bit too strenuous for a first date but it’ll probably work for a second or third date once the mandatories have been traded and you know your date likes being active. Avoid peak times for a little more intimacy.

Price: $25/hr – Rose Bay Aquatic Hire

Glamping At Cockatoo Island

glampingBesides heritage houses and apartments that can be booked out, Cockatoo Island also accommodates for glamping. That’s glamorous camping for the uninitiated. All the hard work is sorted for stayers with the tent setup, bedding, hot showers and toiletries all provided for.

The camping part kicks in with a communal kitchen featuring multiple BBQ areas, fridges, microwaves and boiling water. All you need to provide is your own food for a truly unique experience amongst the stars. Probably not recommended as a first date though. Clingy much.

Price: Cockatoo Island

Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk

bondi-to-bronte-walk-v2If you’re the fitness type and don’t mind bumping into a few people you know, then the Bondi to Bronte walk is a must. Not only is it a great cardio workout but you get the fresh air and may even see whales or dolphins. It’s the perfect setting to enjoy the outdoors and get to know someone. If your date is the weird type, then explore the Waverley Cemetery. Lots of cool old school names on the tombstones, like Mavis, Desmond and Gerald.

Simone Holtznagel For Guess

In the modern world of modelling where platforms such as Instagram can become your oyster, an ugly side often arises in the form of a male-driven phenomenon called the ‘Dick Pic’.

As a proven dating method with -0.5% chance of success, the Dick Pic is nothing new in the internet age. However for one Aussie model named Simone Holtznagel, the latest particular snap of Johnson she received via Instagram was one too many.

Johnson Senior decided to brazenly go where sleazy men rarely ventured, choosing a unique angle of an upturned shaft with berries, bell and hair all on show. There was no attempt at artistic curation. Sad face.

moan
This is not how you win a woman’s heart

Needless to say the punishment from a notably outraged (but still witty) Holtznagel was swift. A meme in the form of Simon Cowell’s “It’s a no from me” meme was her only reply. Followed by a public shaming on her profile of 73,000 followers.

If you want to know how to really date an Instagram model, follow our comprehensive tips by seasoned comedian and lover extraordinaire, Ash Williams.

21 Modern Cabins For The Stylish Mountain Man
21 Modern Cabins For The Stylish Mountain Man

When you think of spending a night in the wilderness, you picture something rugged. The walls are timber and the furnishings are rustic. The décor leans towards antiques and wall-mounted animal heads. A wood burning stove is your only heat.

But these are not your great grandfather’s cabin, or his grandfather’s cabin, or his grandfather’s grandfather’s cabin. These modern cabins are the next generation of wilderness retreats – contemporary in both design and execution, perfect for the man who wants to experience rural life and city style simultaneously.

RELATED: 8 Ultra-Luxe Glamping Destinations Around The World

The architects of these back country dwellings faced unique challenges. Cabins are meant to be cosy and inviting, but modern design can seem cold. Cabins are also meant to complement their surroundings, to blend with the environment and serve as an escape into nature. It’s hard to picture a state-of-the-art structure that achieves both.

Against the odds, architects around the world have made it happen. This gallery of modern cabins spans the globe from New York to Norway, Hungary to Scotland, Canada to Sri Lanka, and back again. One look through, and you’ll be reaching for the plaid and itching to start work on your mountain man beard.

Classic Adelaide Rally: A Masterclass In Speed & Prestige
Classic Adelaide Rally: A Masterclass In Speed & Prestige

Every once in a while the automotive stars line up and you’re invited to partake in an event which takes all of your childhood supercar dreams and crams it down your oesophagus like it was free cake.

Welcome to the Classic Adelaide Rally, Australia’s answer to the U.K’s Gumball 3000 and the USA’s Cannonball Run.

The formula is rather simple. Recruit the country’s biggest car fanatics and convince them to take out their most prized wheels from hiding before racing them on the closed public roads of the Adelaide Hills. It’s pretty straight forward stuff.

That is until the event grows annually to attract some of the world’s most prestigious car makers including Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Lancia and an entire contingent of German powerhouses alongside classic and modern cars built to go from point A to B very quickly.

For our leg of the journey we joined the perennially fastidious Alfa Romeo crew who had their latest small but mighty 4C Spider on hand with a retired Formula One driver at the wheel.

That driver was none other than seasoned Italian gun Ivan Capelli, recipient of three career podiums and 31 championship points across six different teams which includes Ferrari and Jordan.

Riding shotgun with Capelli through the day’s closed stages was yours truly. A self-proclaimed novice at driving very exotic cars at very illegal speeds.

We won’t spoil the surprise with too many words. What we will say is that against the big V8s and V10s of the mighty Germans and British, Capelli and the little Alfa Romeo 4C Spider were more than capable of reeling in the competition.

This was especially evident in the twisty bits via Capelli’s trick steering work, footwork and rapid reflexes (you’d never guess the guy was 53 years old while he explains his snazzy medical business to you at 150km/h mid-corner).

“I’m not really driving at 100%,” was a statement that has stuck with us until today.

Besides the driving talent, kudos is especially owed to the Alfa Romeo 4C’s design philosophy which sees its carbon fibre tub doing wonders for chassis rigidity and handling in place of big power figures. This gave Capelli the ability to annoy a lot of the more powerful cars thanks to its weight advantage of hitting the scales at just 895kg.

As Capelli, co-driver and the little 4C Spider went through the stages, the end of the day quickly culminated in a street festival in the heart of the city which allowed all of the cars and owners to show off their prized wheels in a public space.

What can we say, the environment was electric from start to finish and the Classic Adelaide Rally is one event that every car fanatic needs to take part in.

Think about it: What other state would allow a car enthusiast to test the limits of their machine in a safe and closed off section of the country’s best roads? Exactly. Crazy Adelaidians.

A special thanks must be extended to the Alfa Romeo team who scored this passenger a very coveted seat alongside a legend in one of the most memorable events in Australian motorsport history.

In a state which is home to random German villages called ‘Hahndorf’ and creepy clowns lurking in car parks, I’m convinced that this is one event that we’ll be happy to see again down the track.

Airbus Is Creating The Future Of Taxis With Flying Robots
Airbus Is Creating The Future Of Taxis With Flying Robots

airbustaxi

Airbus have laid out their intentions for the future of the world’s taxi industry – flying robots.

The European aeronautical company which manufactures a major portion of the today’s commercial airliners recently announced the production of its Vahana autonomous electric plane. The single seater will be able to fly a single passenger up to 80km at twice the speed of a conventional road car.

Featuring tilt-style wings which can enable vertical take-off and landing via propellers, the Vahana is slated to begin testing at the end of the year. That’s right. This is no pipe dream.

“The vehicle is being built. Parts are being made as we speak,” confirmed Airbus chief engineer Geoffrey Bower.

Before all of you Fifth Element fans get all giddy about levitating cabs, it’s important to note that the whole flying taxi business is still about a decade away with Airbus toying with the idea of teaming up with Uber.

Maryanna Saenko of Airbus Ventures said that they would love to see what kind of partnership would arise out of such an adventurous idea. On the technical side at least, the Vahana works. Two sets of wings with attached propellers essentially turn the plane into a drone for tight manoeuvring in between building landscapes.

Drones have gone down before in the past though. To combat this, Airbus have builtin a failsafe in the form of an emergency parachute which can bring the craft down to Earth at a gentle rate.

NASA’s head of research for innovate aircrafts has already thrown his support behind the idea, saying that “The Airbus Vahana concept is a very good approach. It’s going to work.”

The reason Airbus went with this tilt style propeller plane is rather simple. A conventional light helicopter design simply doesn’t have the range required to cover a distance of 70km. As a solution, a tilt-winged plane which can hover and fly will save on running costs and increase flight speeds with the same battery power.

Once all of the technical bugs are ironed out, there’s still a mountain of operational regulations that need to be cleared.

“The biggest barrier for craft like the Vahana isn’t the plane itself, but the infrastructure around it,” CAFE Foundation executive director Yolanka Wulff.

Ushering the Vahana into operation will require vast infrastructure such as landing pads throughout the urban environment which could pose an issue for areas with little space and patience for aircraft noise. Costs will also be a major factor of the robotic service’s success, with predictions outlining that it shouldn’t cost more than US$40 for a 15-minute flight.

Ubering home in a private aircraft after a boozy night out may sound cool, but you may have to wait a decade.

Singapore Airlines Business Class 777-300ER Review – Sydney To London
Singapore Airlines Business Class 777-300ER Review – Sydney To London

When it comes to travel, it’s the destinations we rave about. We prattle on about stays in posh hotels, about Michelin-starred meals, about breathtaking views of famous sights. Seldom do we talk about the journey itself, unless it’s to complain about a wailing child or an inedible in-flight meal. Then again, when you’re flying Singapore Airlines Business Class there’s a lot to rave about.

Singapore Airlines changes that. I recently hopped aboard a 777-300ER en route to SIHH in Geneva. Normally the highlight of the experience would be attending an ultra-exclusive watch show, but on this rarest of occasions, getting there was half the fun.

There’s a reason these guys are frequently lauded as one of the world’s best airlines. Known for their attentive staff, stylish design and superior luxury, Singapore Airlines have long been a personal favourite for Business Class trips to Europe. I was looking forward to being wowed by the revamped Business Class, and I was not disappointed.

Pre-Flight Perks With Singapore Airlines Business Class

Singapore Airlines Business Class Experience - Sydney To London

Before I had even boarded the flight, Singapore Airlines was pulling out stops. The updated mobile app allowed me to check my KrisFlyer miles and choose my seat (always in the front of the plane which, with only 12 seats, is more private). I was also able to download my boarding pass to Apple Passbook.

Add to that priority check-in and an express lane through customs, and you have singularly smooth sailing through the airport. So smooth, in fact, that I had time to lend a nice British girl my pen to fill out her boarding card. Worth every penny and I hadn’t even left the ground.

With the travel formalities completed, I made my way to the SilverKris Lounge. I always look forward to resting and doing a little work before a flight, and Singapore Airlines makes both exceptionally easy. The SilverKris lounge offers great Asian-inspired food, plus plenty of Peroni to wash it down with. I also made full use of the showers at Changi and Heathrow after hustling between meetings. I began every flight feeling refuelled and refreshed.

Onboard Amenities

Business-Class-in-Air-Singapore

The legendary service of a Singapore Airlines Business Class flight begins the second you hit your seat. I was greeted by the entire Business crew, who were full of smiles and assurances that I was in safe hands. I promptly told them to call me Luc, not Mr. Wiesman – Mr. Wiesman is my father – and they kindly obliged.

The rejuvenated Business Class on the 777-300ER is sleeker and more modern, but stays true to the winning Singapore Airlines formula. A handful of world-renowned design firms were tapped to develop the new look, which stylishly blends sophistication with functionality.

A stand-out feature of the new Business Class is the upgraded seats. Not only are they capable of an increased recline at 132 degrees, they also feature an improved ergonomic cushion and, when converted, become the widest full-flat bed in the sky. The upgraded entertainment system is nothing to sneeze at, either.

And then there’s the food. Singapore Airlines’ food and beverage selection is always on point, but these days they’re taking it to another level. With ‘Book the Cook’ you can pre-order your main course so you always have your preferred in-flight meal. It’s serious A-list service even without a celebrity name.

A Passenger’s Paradise

Singapore-airlines-business-class2

With the phenomenal level of attention they put into every detail, it’s hard for Singapore Airlines Business Class not to be one of the world’s best. I rest easy knowing I have 24 hours of being looked after by their amazing staff, and with the amount of travelling I do, that’s the greatest amenity of all. Singapore Airlines have made ‘A Great Way to Fly’ even better, and remain one of our first choices for flights to Asia and Europe.

What About ‘Book The Cook’?

We’re all familiar with the glamour of modern air travel. There’s the mad dash to arrive at the airport on time, the interminable security lines, the struggle to find an outlet to charge your smartphone. At the gate, there’s only seating for about 20 of the 200 passengers waiting to board. Once on the plane, you’re faced with a seat approximately the size of your baby nephew’s high chair and a neighbour whose last shower may have been in 1972.

And then there’s the food. Airline meals are a common topic for travellers, but rarely are they talked about to compliment the cuisine. After a recent trip with Singapore Airlines, I am one of the privileged few who can rave about in-flight food.

En route to SIHH in Geneva, I elected to try the Singapore Airlines Book The Cook service. With Book The Cook, Singapore Airlines passengers can pre-order their favourite entrees 24 hours before their scheduled flight departure. Selections are made from a dizzying array of dishes that wouldn’t look out of place on a Michelin-starred menu. The quality is outstanding and SA’s famously excellent service is on full display.

At long last, the era of “chicken or beef?” is over.

High Flying Dining

Singapore Airlines have a long-standing (and well-deserved) reputation as one of the best in the industry. Since I was already out to experience the revamped Business Class, upgrading my dining options seemed like a logical step.

Book The Cook is offered for all meals except the Continental Breakfast and Refreshment. To take the service for a spin, log into your Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer account at least 24 hours before your flight. Click on “Select Meals” and choose “Book the Cook” in the Meal Category dropdown. From there, you can choose your in-flight eats from the Meal dropdown and it will replace the main course from the in-flight menu.

All flights out of Singapore Changi airport are eligible for Book The Cook, along with flights from Amsterdam, Beijing, Dubai, Hong Kong, London, Melbourne, New York, Paris, San Francisco, Sydney, and more. The menu covers a wide variety of local and international cuisine, but exact options vary depending on your departure city. Milan’s Western menu features several Italian dishes, for example, while Singapore’s offers an extensive selection of native delicacies.

The Mid-Air Menu

Just how extensive are we talking? I was blown away by how much was on offer. Flights from Singapore have the most options, but even flights originating elsewhere have an impressive number of meals to choose from.

Departing Sydney, the Business Class Singapore Airlines Book The Cook menu includes:

  • Grilled beef in green peppercorn sauce with seasonal vegetables and gratin potatoes
  • Roast chicken breast in wild mushroom cream and gratin chat potatoes
  • Seafood Thermidor with buttered asparagus, slow-roasted vine-ripened tomato, and saffron rice
  • Tasmanian salmon in wild-lime butter sauce with steamed green beans and pasta
  • Barramundi in black bean sauce with baby bok choy and jasmine rice
  • Cantonese roast duck with plum sauce and steamed rice
  • Indian lamb shank curry with vegetables and pilaff rice
  • Singapore Chicken Rice
  • Toasted multigrain country bread with herb cottage cheese, grilled vegetables and fresh berries low fat yoghurt (Breakfast only)

When you’re flying out of Singapore, that list expands to a staggering 46 dishes from Western, Japanese, Chinese, Malay, Thai, Indian, and of course, home-grown Singaporean menus. The Singapore specialities include Nonya Nasi Padang, Prawn and Chicken Laksa, and Nonya Assam Fish, but the must-have meal for in-the-know travellers is the supremely decadent Lobster Thermidor. Even on terra firma it’s an impressive dish, but in the air it might as well be a miracle.

As for me, I opted for the Indian Lamb Shank Curry and Pilaff Rice from Sydney to Singapore, then the US Rib Eye Steak from Singapore to London. On the way home I sampled the Beef Short Rib and tucked into the Seared Salmon for my final meal.

4 Reasons To Book The Cook

But enough about me. Why should you give Singapore Airlines Book The Cook a try? Well, for starters…

  1. Your first choice will never run out. What’s more disappointing that having your heart set on a meal, only to find out that the passenger in front of you scored the last one? With Book The Cook, you’re guaranteed to get your first choice every time.
  2. A mind-numbing array of options. Frequent business travellers could be faced with the same in-air meals on repeat. Unless you were the kid who only ate cheese sandwiches for lunch every day, that’s no way to live. Book The Cook offers a far larger menu than what’s available in the air so you’ll never get food fatigue.
  3. It’s accessible to almost everyone. As elite as Book The Cook sounds, it’s not limited to First Class passengers. The celebrated service is available to anyone travelling in First Class, Business Class, or Premium Economy.
  4. It’s one less thing to worry about. Flying is stressful enough without having to worry that your meal will have all the texture and flavour of a clay brick. Coming from Singapore Airlines, you know you can expect the best and it will be delivered with exceptional service.

Arnold Schwarzenegger's Electric G-Wagen Will Crush Your Prius

Civilian electric cars were never meant to look or behave like this. Arnold Schwarzenegger is rarely considered a civilian these days even though he is retired.

Welcome to the Terminator’s vision of an electric future. A highly modified version of Mercedes-Benz luxurious G-Wagen which replaces the prehistoric V8 combustion engine for a fully electric unit that can send the car from 0-100km/h in under six seconds whilst the electric top speed reaches a respectable 177km/h.

In electric car world these are pretty good figures especially since the car has zero emissions and can afford Schwarzenegger and his buddy Dylan 300km of mileage on a single charge.

Recharging the car to 80% will take just under thirty minutes so quick getaways shouldn’t be an issue either. The car, officially called the Kreisel Electric, was developed by Kreisel – a German firm which specialises in advanced electric motors, powertrains and batteries.

Is it the German Tesla? You’ll have to wait and see. For now you get cigar-chomping Arnie negating his carbon footprint.
