Study Reveals A Relationship’s Expiry-Date Is Set The First Time You Have Sex

In a move that has (for once) proven exaggeration-prone-mates-everywhere right, scientists have confirmed nervous love-makers’ worst fear: good ‘first-time’ sex could be crucial to the longevity of your relationship.

Specifically, researchers have revealed the success of a relationship is, “Defined by the sexual chemistry between a couple the first time they sleep together” (The Mail Online).

“A study of 800 people found that couples who have great sex the first time they sleep together were more likely to go the distance than those who don’t.”

The study, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, concluded that couples who enjoy their first time together are more motivated to take this experience and turn it into a long-term relationship.

In the early stages of the experiment, the relationships all progressed at similar rates. However, once each duo had sex for the first time, significant differences began to appear.

“When these differences appeared, it was sex which determined whether the couple ended up married or broke up.”

Professor Eastwick, the author of the study, told The Mail Online: “Long term and short term trajectories typically pull apart after you have known someone for weeks or months.”


“You wonder ‘is this going somewhere?” or “How much am I into this person?”

“It is somewhere around this point that short term and long term relationships start to diverge, and historically, we have very little data on this particular period of time.”

But this study has shown; it plateaus or declines in short term relationships, while increasing in those that end up long term.

“People may end up in short term relationships when they are ‘just a little’ attracted to the other person – enough to keep having sex, but maybe not for very long,” he explained.

So there you have it: although long-term relationships are associated with vanilla-sex advocates who have their shit way-too-together to offer anything interesting to the world (or their single friends), serial monogamists could actually be having the most fun.

It’s not as simple as hiring a tutor and heading off to the pub: if you want to raise the next Einstein you’ve got to start young.

And it’s not enough to drill your three year old with nine times-tables—by then it could be too late. If you want to ensure your offspring have the best possible chance of getting into your local selective school, you need to start exercising—pre-conception.

Scientists have always known: physical exercise in combination with cognitive training makes you smarter and lowers your chances of getting Alzheimer’s-type diseases. Now an interesting new study has gone beyond this research, proving that:

“Exercise changes the brains and sperm of male animals in ways that later affect the brains and thinking skills of their offspring,” (NYT).

The experiment took a bunch of genetically identical male mice, all reared sedentary. Then, once they reached adulthood, half of them were put in cages equipped with running wheels, toys and games designed to stimulate their bodies and brains.


10 weeks later, scientists looked inside their brains and found that—as you would expect—they had developed stronger neuronal connections (and performed better in cognitive tests) than the mice that had remained sedentary.

The surprise came at the end of the study, when they realised the offspring of the active group of mice also learned faster and had better memories than the mice with parents that had been inactive, even though they all grew up in the same environment.

Especially when you consider the building scientific evidence that exercise can affect whether or not certain genes get turned on or off; it’s a no brainer to keep fit if you’re planning on having kids.

“There is such a false reality of entrepreneurship. It’s the cool new thing to do. Perception is that you work your own hours, you don’t have to report in to some weirdo, you can wear whatever you want, you can do whatever you want…and then at the end you will get a big fat cheque. So far from reality.” 

Stevan Premutico, tech entrepreneur, investor & founder of Dimmi, certainly doesn’t hold back when it asked if everyone’s back-of-a-napkin idea will survive the long haul.  

But he’s right: even though it’s not as sexy as talking about multi-billion dollar unicorns, entrepreneurs need to think about their mental health. For ‘Mental Health May’ we interviewed some of Australia’s leading empresarios to find out why 72% of entrepreneurs are affected by mental health conditions (compared to 20% of the Australian general population), and what can be done about it.

Why are the statistics so skewed?

Marty Spargo, co-founder of REIZE (the Dollar-Shave Club of energy drinks), says these statistics don’t surprise him because:

“Being an entrepreneur is absolutely terrible for your mental health.”

The fact is: most new businesses fail, and with that comes a lot of lost money and time. Marty told D’Marge that this can lead to, “Doubting yourself more broadly and at times depression, or even suicide.” He goes on to say, “Even successful startups are emotional rollercoasters; it’s just they have more good days than bad.”

“The media latches on to the few success stories and anyone considering leaving their job to start their own business aspires to emulate the success of the few unicorns.”

“The problem is,” he continues, “That’s completely unrealistic. Instead we should show the truth about startups and the fallout left in the wake of failure so that people can have a more complete view of the realities of being an entrepreneur.”

Patrick Kidd, an entrepreneur whose luxury hair salon PATRICKS went from start up to multinational brand extremely quickly, backed this up; pointing out that running your own ship takes a serious mental toll.

“Being an entrepreneur is like being bipolar, seriously! One minute you can be on top of the world and feeling invincible then one email or call later you can be borderline suicidal.”

So whether you’re working a stressful 9-5, running a start-up, or just contemplating a side-hustle: take a serious look at the following mental health tips.

Take Three Day Weekends

If you can’t bring yourself to take a holiday, this is the next best thing (and could prove more sustainable in the long run). Stevan Premutico credits it with enabling him to work for a decade—non stop—before selling his business to Tripadvisor.  

“Having not taken a holiday for 10 years, this became my staple towards the end. It sounds so simple but it’s so powerful. A three day weekend away from the office to relax, recharge and reinspire. Lots on reading, podcasts and thinking. I would do a lot of my bigger thinking here… for the biz, and for my life. It’s amazing what can happen when you just get away for a few days and let your heart and mind roam free.”

Build A Loyal Team

Matt Jensen, founder of M.J Bale, says that it’s important to have dedicated business strategies in place to help you deal with the peaks and troughs of entrepreneurial life.

“Delegation is important, as is making sure you’ve got a great team and bench, just like in sport.”

Although “our biz is our baby and sometimes it’s difficult to let go” Stevan agrees, saying that at the end of the day it’s important to have a great person by your side.

“The catalyst for me being able to get more balance and to step back more was when I found a truly amazing 2IC, Asheesh Chacko. I trusted him with my life and for the first time in many years I knew the biz would survive (and perhaps even prosper!) if I wasn’t first in, last out and on 24/7!”

Stay True To Your Vision

Jamie Gonzalez, founder of Limitless Living, reminds us that prioritisation is essential in order to stay true to your vision. “If I do feel pressured then I know I’m doing something within my business I shouldn’t be doing.”

“If there is something I don’t enjoy doing I task it out. The more space I have to enjoy what I actually love doing—the more I come up with creative content and opportunities in a much more effortless way.”

Personal Outlets

Patrick Kidd says that, “If you really want to dance with the devil as far as opening yourself up for stress, anxiety and no sleep (compared to a normal job),” it’s essential to have personal outlets to zap the stress.


A big fan of meditation, Matt Jensen agrees.

“I practice transcendental meditation religiously and think it’s really beneficial.”

Physical well-being is also key: whether it’s weights, running, touch footy, swimming or whatever your thing is. For Matt personally, he enjoys F45, a group training regime, “Plus the balance of meditation.”

Get Coached

Patrick Kidd tells us how, “On the back of some advice from one of my board members I met a psychiatrist who specialized in people that worked in high stress positions.” This involved five to ten minutes of ‘being present in the moment’ to give his brain a break, once a day. 

“I felt a bit weird doing it the first time but it’s probably one of the best things I have ever done and now I recommend it to everyone I meet in similar positions to me.”

He describes it like a Ferrari’s engine: it’s built to rev hard, but only for relatively short periods of time, then it needs to cool down.

“If revved too hard and for too long the engine will blow up and you don’t want that happening to your brain when you have put 10 years of your life and millions of dollars of investors’ money into a business, not to mention the effect this would have on your personal life, friends and family!” 

Don’t Neglect Your Friends

Stevan recounts how he gave some support to a friend who was beginning the start-up journey.

“A few months later he called me and said, everything you said was bang on. But there is one thing you never told me – it’s so bloody lonely.”

The entrepreneur journey is a tough, but beautiful ride. Although sacrifices are inevitable, make sure you keep putting effort into your friendships.

Set Boundaries

Stop feeling guilty and put boundaries in place, was a strong across-the-board message. For Stevan, the hardest aspect of this was, “To stop feeling guilty if I didn’t respond to an email within minutes (at any time of the day) or take a call from one of my team 24/7.”

“I realised that I couldn’t be a great leader, a great thinker or fun to be around if I was ‘on’ all the time and always on edge…so I started to impose boundaries.”

A positive side-effect of this, according to Stevan, is you will develop a newfound appreciation for your team’s boundaries and balance as well.

“Boundaries can be as simple as leaving your phone at the door when you arrive home, leaving it at home when you are heading to the beach or giving yourself a half day on Fridays.”

So, should you become an entrepreneur?

According to Stevan, “Few things are as rewarding as getting an idea off the ground, solving a problem, making a dent on the planet or disrupting an industry.” But you will have to make sacrifices to pull it off.

“If you are in it for fame & fortune, don’t take the leap: stay in your 9-5 job and the security and sanity that affords.”

Excessive Sweating

It’s one thing to sweat after a gruelling session at the gym, but it’s another to perspire regularly regardless of temperature or exertion. In fact, heavy sweating is an actual condition known as hyperhidrosis. Antiperspirants are the first step, but if that’s not enough medical treatments are also available. Try heavy-duty antiperspirant Driclor, available only in pharmacies.

Bad Breath

For obvious reasons, you’ve got to keep your halitosis under control. Causes of bad breath include food, tobacco products, poor dental hygiene, health problems or medications. Treatments depend on the cause, but can include regular brushing and flossing (don’t forget the tongue!), regular visits to the dentist and dropping bad habits like smoking. For a temporary fix, keep the mouth moist by drinking water and chewing gum to stimulate the production of saliva.

Dandruff

Snow in the mountains: beautiful. Snow on your shoulders: not so much. Nothing ruins the look of a beautiful dark suit like a fine dusting of dead skin cells. Dandruff could be the result of dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis, failure to clean the scalp often enough, or several medical conditions. Dandruff-fighting shampoos are an option, but if you prefer to go natural try tea tree oil, baking soda, apple cider vinegar, coconut oil or lemon.

Ingrown Hairs

Unpleasant and unsightly, ingrown hairs curl and grow back into your skin after shaving. The result is redness and irritation, plus bumpy skin in place of the silky smooth feel you were going for. To prevent ingrown hairs, use products that aren’t overly drying, prep your skin properly (steam and water from a shower softens hair and makes it easier to remove), and exfoliate regularly. To treat ingrown hairs, moisturise liberally to soothe irritation, avoid further shaving, and carefully pull out the ingrown hair with a disinfected pair of tweezers.

Shaving Cuts

Shaving nicks happen to the best of us. Thankfully, there are a variety of products available that are specially made to treat them. Apply an astringent product, which constricts the tissues in your skin to stop cuts from bleeding. Your options include a styptic pencil, an alum block, an aftershave, and various rollers and gels. In a pinch, you can skip the special products and use a lip balm, an antiperspirant, Vaseline or Listerine.

Foot Odour

Feet are a natural breeding ground for bacteria and perspiration, even for the most fastidiously clean gentleman. Foot odour is going to happen, at least occasionally, whether you like it or not. To treat the problem, avoids synthetic socks and wear shoes that promote good air circulation (leather is best). Change your shoes and socks regularly, letting them air out between wears, and invest in an antiperspirant. In severe cases, topical or oral antibiotics can be prescribed.

Chafing

You don’t have to be a marathon runner to experience skin chafing. Chafing is the result of skin rubbing against clothing or other skin, which means prevention requires you to reduce the friction. Wet skin can make chafing worse, so stay dry by applying a powder to the areas that get the most sweaty. You can also lubricate the hot spots with petroleum jelly and similar products. Wear proper fitting, moisture-wicking clothing with smooth seams, particularly when exercising. If chafing is already apparent, gently clean and dry the area and apply a lubricating substance.

Unwanted Hair

It’s not just cyclists and swimmers who have reason to remove body hair. If you’re looking to rid yourself of unsightly fur for good, laser hair removal treatments are your best bet (but note: it only works on dark hair). For less permanent results, try cream hair removers, waxing, or shaving. You can even invest in a specially-designed back shaver with wider blades and a hinged handle that allows you to shave in much the same way you would use a scrub brush to cleanse your back.

Teeth Discolouration

Letting your choppers get yellow is high on the list of don’ts, unless you’re totally cool with ladies recoiling in horror any time you try to go for the kiss. Tooth discolouration can be the result of all kinds of things, from tobacco, to poor hygiene, to disease, to certain foods, to simple genetics. To brighten up your smile, make lifestyle changes like improving your brushing technique, quitting smoking, and avoiding foods and beverages that cause stains. For more advanced treatments, try over-the-counter whitening agents or an in-office whitening procedure.

Snoring

Maybe you don’t want her to spend the night, in which case amp up the snoring until it reaches comical proportions. But if you’re looking forward to a night of cuddling and breakfast in bed the next morning, you’ve got to get those snores under control. Change up your sleeping position – laying on your back makes you more prone to snoring, so switch to your side. Avoid dehydration and drinking alcohol 4 to 5 hours before sleep. Practice good sleep habits. Open your nasal passages if they’re blocked. Losing weight may also reduce snoring for some people.

You thought dandruff was bad? Now imagine having that everywhere. Luckily, it’s easy to treat. Moisturise from every angle – meaning apply lotions on the outside, and make sure you’re getting enough antioxidants and essential fatty acids in your diet to stimulate your cell’s oil production from the inside. It’s also important to stay hydrated by drinking at least 6 glasses of water per day. If you still find yourself drying out, shorten your showers (long showers wash away your skin’s natural moisturisers) and invest in a humidifier. Exercise can also help keep your skin in top condition by enhancing circulation and blood flow.

Razor Burn

Shaving is frequently a recipe for the red, itchy, swollen condition known as razor burn. The most common causes of razor burn are using a dull blade, using hard soap, shaving dry and sensitive skin. To rid yourself of razor burn quickly, apply a cold compress and dab on apple cider vinegar. You can also apply a paste made of aspirin and warm water, soothing aloe vera, moist black teabags, honey, cucumber, a solution of tea tree oil and water, or your breakfast – aka a mix of finely ground oatmeal, plain yoghurt, and honey.
