Liverpool FC centre-back and Netherlands national football team captain Virgil van Dijk is one of the most confident, skilled defenders in modern football – and his recent horological flex is emblematic of his confident style.
“He [has] an aura about him, a confidence, because I think he [knows] he [is] good,” former Celtic teammate Kris Commons has said of van Dijk.
This self-assuredness, no doubt, was an essential part of Liverpool’s unbridled success in the 2019-2020 English Premier League, which after their 5-3 win over Chelsea today at their home ground of Anfield – Liverpool’s last home game of the season, which they clinched back in June – saw Liverpool lift the trophy in style.
The always-photogenic trophy lift saw Virgil ditch his football boots for some limited-edition Nike Air Max 1 Anniversary Red OG sneakers, as well as strap on a Patek Philippe Aquanaut Singapore 2019 Limited Edition worth a tidy 140,000 AUD (~96,000 USD).
As the name suggests, this rare Aquanaut (ref. 5167-012A) is one of only 500 examples, first released during last year’s Patek Philippe Watch Art Grand Exhibition in Singapore. Patek Philippe’s exhibitions are the stuff of legend: a buffet of horological delights unlike anything else in the world.

This Aquanaut was one of six different limited edition models designed for the event, and was originally only available in Singapore and South East Asia. Naturally, they were snapped up quick-smart, so van Dijk must have been pretty savvy (or dropped a bit of coin) in order to pick this bad boy up.
In any case, it’s a highly appropriate choice of timepiece, its red colour scheme matching perfectly with Liverpool’s vermillion home kit. Since its debut in 1997, the Aquanaut has quickly established itself as one of the most desirable sports watches on the market, and a favourite of Patek collectors.
It’s a classy watch for a classy footballer, and we can’t think of a better present to give oneself on the occasion of becoming a Premier League Champion.

There’s no other car quite like the classic Volkswagen Beetle. Not only is it the longest-running and most manufactured car of all time, its incredible versatility and robust design mean that it’s the perfect candidate for modification.
From pimped-out ‘lunar rovers‘ to straight-up just turning one into a hotel, the ubiquity and charm of the ‘Bug’ naturally invites customisation and experimentation. While its diminutive four-banger only put out a modest 40hp even in its largest incarnations, its rear-engined rear-wheel-drive layout naturally lends itself to performance applications. Plenty of mechanics and revheads over the years have figured out ways to eke many, many more horses out of its motor.
One of the most popular modifications one could make to your Beetle back in the day was to turn it into a ‘dune-basher’ or ‘beach buggy’, either by taking an angle grinder to its all-steel body or by replacing it wholesale with a fibreglass body kit. The buggy became an icon of 60s surf culture, particularly in places like California, Florida, Hawaii and of course, here in Australia.
Tasmania might not be known for its beaches, but this period-correct VW-based whip going under the hammer by Pickles in Hobart is the ultimate beach buggy. It might also be one of the coolest cars on sale in Australia today.

This 1962 coastline cruiser might have started off its life as a humble VW Type 1, but has clearly been extensively modified. The most obvious modification is the bright red J&S body kit. Don’t be fooled by the photos on the original listing – there might be a Meyers Manx badge on this buggy but DMARGE reached out to the seller who confirmed with us exclusively that it’s a genuine J&S kit.
J&S Fibreglass was a small company based in Sydney’s Five Dock that built removable hard tops for and kit cars like this beach buggy, which was their most successful product. Some of their other cars were powered by Holden ‘Grey’ 2.2L or Jaguar XK6 3.4L straight-sixes, but this buggy retains the (presumably original) VW Typ 126 1.6L flat-four.
This was the largest engine fitted to original Beetles, also found in Type 2 vans (aka the ‘Kombi’), Type 3s and US-spec Karmann Ghias. In a car this small and light, it’s probably all you need – but as previously mentioned, it’s easy to make these 40hp engines much, much faster. This engine’s also got aftermarket parts from Mick Motors installed, a respected classic VW shop up in Queensland.

The car has a distinct red-and-white colour theme, from the awesome white-wall tires with red rims, to the very 60s vinyl interior. The dashboard’s all white, too, with what appears to be an old Mazda radio shoehorned into the fibreglass surround. The redback spider entombed in the resin shift knob is a delightfully kitsch touch, too.
Otherwise, it’s a true beach buggy – no roof, no amenities, but vibes for days. Sure beats any old Jeep Wrangler pavement crawler in the looks department. And because it’s so mechanically simple – with Beetle parts as common as – this is one classic car that won’t break the bank (but will definitely crack a few smiles).

The auction for this ultimate beach buggy opens on 11am sharp tomorrow morning (Friday 24th July), so have your wallet ready – this baby won’t stick around long.
Good luck, and you can find the listing here.

Guns, fast cars, Prosecco protests, Tesla – there are a lot of things that could only happen in America. But a recent photo, taken by Sydney resident Amaury Treguer proves – on the flip side – there are a few scenes that could only ever happen in Australia.
Specifically, there are certain images you only see in Bondi, Sydney’s most iconic stretch of sand. Amaury, a Parisian photographer operating the Morning Bondi Instagram account, recently took to The Internet to prove this, showing when they’re not congregating en masse at The Sheaf, Eastern Suburbs residents make time for some truly wholesome living.
View this post on Instagram
“Only in Bondi,” Amaury wrote. “I love Bondi for a lot of things including all the randomness that you can witness. This morning started with what I thought initially a photo shoot, but it actually wasn’t, it was the filming of a beautiful rap music video with the lady singing along the music pumping from the speakers. The rest was pretty usual and the surf pumping.”
Amaury isn’t the only photographer to cotton onto Bondi’s unique lifestyle. The Instagram account Only In Bondi has collated some classics of late too.

… these images go against the grain. In fact, somewhat controversially, we’d argue they show Bondi is more unique than its detractors would have you believe. Where else could you find the same mix of budget luxury?
Also, while some of Bondi’s defiant reputation is deserved, much of it is overhyped. As DMARGE recently reported Bondi has become the Sydney media’s perennial punching bag.
Convinced not everyone who lives in the Eastern Suburbs is a smug bastard, DMARGE called Dr Lars Madsen, a clinical psychologist who sits on the board of the mental health charity The Mindshift Foundation, to understand the psychology of living in Bondi.
Lars told us living in a suburb with a reputation can affect your mindset: “What we know is that as people we are affected by other people – we are constantly comparing ourselves to other people no matter whether we like it or not, in one way or another.”
“If you’re in a culture or environment where you have a lot of high achieving people dressing in a particular way or talking about things in a particular way, we will seek to align ourselves to them,” Lars says.
“The same way if you’re in a culture where people are taking drugs, drinking alcohol, not working, we kind of drift that way as well in terms of our attitudes – there’s lots of psychological research that shows that [this] happens – the environment affects people’s behaviour.”
So: could moving to Bondi turn you into someone who wears aggressively sexy activewear? Someone who feels entitled to live it up? Someone who feels obliged to live it up? We put the question to Lars: “Can moving area change your mindset?”
“Absolutely,” Lars told us. “But it depends on who they associate with and who they identify with – if they go to a different area where they are surrounded by different attitudes and different people… then people will gravitate to the norm of that mindset and the people around them.”

In terms of Bondi specifically? “Yes, I think so. I think people go and live in Bondi and have an expectation that it is something and that maybe affects how they are, and how they interact with others – probably just like people go to Toorak in Melbourne much the same way.”

We’d all like the strength of an Aztec, the ingenuity of a Nasca, the intelligence of Hippocrates. But when you’re two frappucinos deep into a long, white-collar day, it can be tempting to listen to More Ripped Bros talk about training when you get home, rather than going and shredding yourself.
If you can shove off those laziness covers, though, and find it in you to do both, then there is an ancient nugget of information Joe Rogan, America’s baldest (and arguably most successful) podcaster just dropped that could help you attain greater mental toughness and an increased lung capacity.
Before we get into it we must start with a disclaimer: going from zero to hero, especially if you have underlying medical conditions, is a big no no. But if you are healthy, experimental, and keen to learn, here’s the lesson Rogan just took to Instagram to share.
View this post on Instagram
Inspired by the techniques he learned from James Nestor’s ‘breath’ book, Rogan on Tuesday announced, “I’ve changed the nature of my daily sauna sessions from uncomfortable mind tempering to a slow, rhythmic meditation session. It’s made the time pass by way quicker, and I feel even better when I get out.”
How? With the following technique: “I’ve been doing deep breaths in for a count of 6, and out for a count of six. At first I count the breaths, but eventually I can get lost in the pull and push of breathing in and out until I go into a sort of a trance. When I come out 30 minutes later I feel like I’m on a mild drug and I actually feel energized and relieved of a considerable amount of stress.”
“Doing breath work is something I’ve toyed with for a while, but I’ve never pursued seriously with any regularity until recently,” Rogan added. “Sometimes things find their way into your life right when you need them.”
Just like exercises like running or swimming help improve your heart’s health, breathing exercises can make the lungs function more efficiently.
In fact, lung specialists recommend breathing exercises for people with COPD and asthma because they help keep the lungs strong.
Medical News Today reports, “A person should do these exercises when they feel that their lungs are healthy, to build strength, and continue the techniques if they feel short of breath.”
“Deep breathing exercises may help increase lung capacity. For instance, the British Lung Foundation say that deep breathing can help clear mucus from the lungs after pneumonia, allowing more air to circulate,” (Medical News Today).
“To perform this exercise: Breathe deeply 5–10 times, then cough strongly a couple of times, and repeat.”
“Other exercises, such as pursed lip breathing, can help manage breathlessness during respiratory illness. According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, this may help with breathlessness caused by COVID-19,” Medical News Today adds.
“However, researchers have not yet looked into the effects of breathing exercises on lung capacity in people with COVID-19. There is currently no evidence that they are a safe or effective way to manage symptoms of this new condition.”
“Overall, it is a good idea to speak to a doctor before trying any new breathing exercise.”

Post Malone is one of the music industry’s most unlikely success stories. In just a short few years, the 25-year-old Texan transformed from a struggling heavy metal and country performer into one of the most popular hip-hop artists worldwide.
His eclectic musical style and personality has also been reflected in his even wilder business ventures: running his own music festival and marijuana company; sponsorships with Bud Light, HyperX and True Religion; fashion collaborations with Crocs and sunglasses brand Arnette… This is on top of writing all his own music and working with other musicians like Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Lorde and Lil Wayne just to name a few.
The White Iverson singer’s latest, most unexpected side-hustle? Fine French wine.
In a surprising move for a man who’s built up an image as a grungy cowboy rapper, Post Malone (real name Austin Post) has launched a classy rosé called Maison No. 9, a reference to his favourite tarot card, the Nine of Swords. The vino’s been an overnight success – Malone having sold over 50,000 bottles after only two days on pre-sale.

The elegantly-designed bottle resembles Gerard Bertrand’s Côte des Roses, and is priced at a perfectly reasonable 22 USD / 30 AUD a pop.
“It’s so crisp. It has a little strawberry, and it pairs perfect with the sunset. You know red wine goes with meat, white wine goes with fish, but this one pairs perfect with the sunset. But that’s not food, you can’t eat it – I’ve tried,” Post told the Wall Street Journal.
“I’d say there’s nothing wrong with a buttered whitefish and a little pilaf or a risotto or something. Or just some chicken tenders and french fries, who cares. I don’t want a sommelier to tell you what’s good with it. I want you to drink it with every meal and see what tastes good for you – and then you’ve got your perfect meal right there.”
Clearly happy with the wine’s success, Malone’s even got a new tattoo to celebrate his alcoholic accomplishments: a huge broadsword down his right temple, a near-duplicate of Maison No. 9’s logo.
Post’s not the only celebrity who’s got in on the booze action. Ryan Reynolds, George Clooney, Matthew McConaughey and Dan Aykroyd have all produced their own spirits; Action Bronson, Hanson and Iron Maiden have beers; and Wayne Gretzky, Sam Neill, Sting and Snoop Dogg have all jumped on the celebrity wine train.
Some celebrity-endorsed or produced alcohols are bloody awful (Kiss lager comes to mind), but Post’s rosé is apparently not too bad. Currently, the tasty rosé is only available in the US – time will tell if Aussies will be able to get in on the action.
Cheers to that, Mr. Malone.

The world isn’t short of luxury white leather sneakers. Common Projects has been champion in that arena for many years, but you certainly pay a premium for a pair. So what if we told you that you could get a luxurious canvas pair in a range of colours for just $125?
That’s exactly what’s being offered by Koio, which we admit could be a brand you’ve not heard of before. Koio is an American brand founded by two friends who wanted to bring European style and quality Stateside.
The idea behind the brand’s inception was to create a sneaker that the founders (self-confessed sneakerheads) would be happy wearing all day and all night. The result is a broad collection of sneakers that encompasses a variety of materials (including a low-top leather model for just under $250) such as canvas. Canvas, of course, is a material championed by the likes of Converse and is notorious for its lightweight construction and breathability.
They can also be paired with just about anything, from tailored shorts to chinos and, if you get it right, a suit.
This pair of Capri canvas sneakers from Koio are made by hand in the Marche region of Italy – a mecca for all things luxury sneaker – from Italian canvas. They’re fitted with a Margom outsole, known for its durability and lightweight build, so you really are getting a product worth every single cent.
And right now they’re on sale, meaning you can snap a pair up for just $125. Head to the company’s website now to get yours.

Amsterdam is known for its liberal approach to life. While Brits, Americans and Australians (to name a few) titter at sex and treat C grade drugs as the height of felony (whilst at home), The Netherlands’ capital opens their minds to a whole new world of freedom (all while emptying their wallets).
On that note, one of Amsterdam’s most stereotypical (and profitable) attractions: the Red Light District, is now under a different kind of scrutiny as sex workers were recently given the green light to go back to work.
After being closed for months thanks to The Pangolin Kiss, the Red Light District is now open again – but that doesn’t mean it’s back to normal.
As Amsterdam rethinks its post-pandemic image (something DMARGE reported on earlier this year), with locals having enjoyed the city centre, for the last four months, to themselves, officials are considering cutting back on mass tourism, to keep the benefits of reduced noise, littering and disorderly behavior into the post-pandemic era.
View this post on Instagram
One idea that has been floated, to achieve this, involves a massive overhaul of the Red Light District, which could see the city’s sex workers relocated to a “prostitution hotel” outside the city center.
As CNN Travel reports, “The district in Amsterdam’s historic center, known locally as De Wallen, relies heavily on tourism and normally attracts over a million visitors a month.” But now, “emboldened by the sight of empty streets and the calm atmosphere during lockdown, residents living in the city center are calling for change.”
“More than 30,000 residents have signed a petition titled ‘Amsterdam has a choice,’ which urges city authorities to improve the quality of life for residents in the center and restrict the annual overnight tourist stays to 12 million. Last year the total stood at 18.8 million.”
It’s not just window shows that bring tourists to Amsterdam. As Anita, a Prostitution Information Center employee told CNN Travel, the industry may have been unfairly singled out: “The sex workers are not the cause of the disturbance. The bachelor parties are the problem and the fact that EasyJet flights are so cheap.”
“Before the lockdown,” CNN Travel reports, “Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema was already considering a major overhaul of the Red Light District in a bid to reduce disruptive behavior and protect the sex workers from degrading conditions. In May, she said that the pandemic has highlighted the ‘urgency to think about the city center of the future.'”
“Halsema has presented four scenarios for the district, which range from reducing the number of brothel windows to moving sex workers to a new location.”
She has also suggested opening a “prostitution hotel” outside the center and said in May that the search for a new location was well under way. A spokesperson has told CNN Travel that the council will hold a vote on the scenarios after the summer.
Sex workers fear the district’s closure would put them in a precarious position: “When you leave your shift at 5 a.m., the robbers will be lining up,” Anita told CNN Travel. “We don’t want to move into a prostitution hotel. Here everyone can see us. That’s what makes our jobs safe.”
Sex workers also point out that moving to the city’s outskirts will reduce their earning potential.
Only time and budget flights will tell.

As 2020 continues to tick on, it feels like we’re falling down the rabbit hole, but instead of Wonderland, we’ve arrived at the apocalypse. Despite the global economy being sicker than the millions of people with The Virus around the world, the American stock market continues to defy all logic: rallying harder than Carlos Sainz.
Meanwhile, thousands of Australians are out of work, and we’re watching with morbid fascination as America continues to disappear up its own arsehole. The prospect of a full-blown civil war (do we exaggerate? watch this clip and decide for yourself) is almost overshadowed by the insane overcapitalisation on US markets fuelled by the so-called ‘MAGA stocks’– bedroom traders fiddling while Rome burns.
One Australian man on Twitter has got Tesla fanboys and stock market ‘experts’ fuming however with his latest trading prediction.
Declan Rurenga, editor of Griffith’s The Area News and Leeton’s The Irrigator in rural NSW, cheekily suggested some trading advice that flies in the face of America’s current stock market mania.
Taking out a loan to short Tesla stocks. https://t.co/42x3YV3fBt
— Declan Rurenga (@DeclanRurenga) July 18, 2020
This immediately got Americans up in arms, ready to shout down Rurenga’s Tweet with the force of a thousand angry bald eagles. From cries like “oh you going broke bro” and “how the heck have you got a verified account”, it’s clear that Rurenga touched a nerve.
Even an American Tesla owners’ club (a completely unbiased source for comment on Tesla stocks, of course) got in on the action.
I mean, do what you want…. but the stock has a funny tendency to keep going up
— Tesla Owners Club New York State (@TOCNewYorkState) July 18, 2020
It just goes to show how much of a bubble American traders are in compared to the rest of society, and how much these tech stocks mean to some people.
Rurenga later tweeted that his initial tweet was “bait”, but we’re not so sure. It’s hard to tell what the right take is: are Tesla stocks destined for a humbling fall, or are Tesla’s naysayers (of which there are plenty) all talk and no walk?
Tesla stock price is too high imo
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 1, 2020
Only time, Elon Musk’s brain snaps, and Tesla’s impending battle with European car maker VW (which is set to focus on electric) will tell.

Holden vs Ford is one of the greatest automotive rivalries of all time. With the Holden brand facing discontinuation by 2021, Ford focusing on SUVs and utes instead of cars, and both brands having wrapped up local manufacturing in Australia long ago, it feels like the glory days of Australian motoring have passed us by.
Thankfully, there are still classic Australian cars bumping around that remind us of those better, more exciting times. Cars are like rolling museums: petrol-powered time capsules that let us experience the past simply through driving them. Getting behind the wheel of a classic Aussie vehicle is an experience any car nut worth their salt would jump at.
Even better than simply driving a classic car is being able to own and restore one. Being personally responsible for saving a piece of Australian history – one that’s fast as hell to boot – we can think of nothing better.
Enter this 1973 Ford Falcon XA GT Hard Top RPO 83 manual coupe. This very rare one-owner Blue Oval masterpiece is being auctioned after 32 years parked in a shed. And you can tell, because it’s absolutely caked in grime.

Known by enthusiasts as ‘The Chicken Coupe’ (so-named because the owner had wrapped chicken wire around the car during its long sleep in the barn to prevent it from getting damaged by animals), this car is the stuff of legend. Falcon XA GTs are already pretty rare and desirable beasts, but this one is particularly unique.
Back in the 70s, Ford had planned to release the hotly-anticipated GT HO Phase 4 Supercar, until a government ban based on a rising road toll and the ‘supercar scare’ of 1974 curtailed their plans. Ford had stockpiled racing parts for the GT HO, so they built 120 XA GT hardtops with the option code of RPO 83 (Regular Production Option), effectively building the supercar in secret. This is one of those rare RPO 83s.
The ‘Chicken Coupe’ is one of only two RPO 83 hardtop examples with a factory ‘MacRobertson’s Old Gold’ paint job: a rich orange hue that references Cadbury’s Australian dark chocolate brand of the same name.

Under the bonnet is a huge Australian-made version of the classic 351 Cleveland, a mighty 5.8L V8 good for 300hp (224kW if you’re a 21st century Aussie). The RPO 83 package adds a Holley 780 carburetor, 2.25-inch exhaust headers and a clutch slave cylinder hydraulic pipe heat shield for added performance.
The car hasn’t been driven since the late 80s so everything probably needs a good check-up. The engine’s all original, however, which adds to its vintage bona fides. One advantage of these big American-derived V8s is that parts are still made for them and easy to find. The body panels and interior of this old Ford might be another story, however.
Anyone opening the doors of this barn-find beauty will be in for a rude shock, and probably quite the assault on your olfactory system: the chicken wire might have kept the birds off the car but it clearly didn’t stop the rats, because the interior of this Falcon supercar is a goddamn mess.

That said, if you got a hazmat team in there and disinfected the thing, you’d end up with a pretty nice car. Remarkably, the dash isn’t cracked at all – which is common among vintage cars thanks to the UV intensity of the Australian sun. One very 70s dealer option is the bright orange cloth inserts in the seats, which you’d have to restore if you wanted to do the car justice.
“This car is as Australian as it gets,” Grays Online Classic Car Specialist Rian Gaffy says.
“From its accidental birth after the supercar ban to its decades in a shed surrounded by chicken wire to its colour scheme that honours a local chocolate company… We’re very proud and excited to offer it for auction.”
The ‘Chicken Coupe’ is part of the Grays July Classic Car Auction, with bidding commencing at 5pm on Friday July 24th. The last owner paid only $7,000 for it, but prices are (apparently) likely to well exceed that figure.
For your chance to restore an Aussie legend (and to become one yourself), head to Grays Online and get ready to bid.
