How To Suggest Your Partner Exercise More, Without Getting Dumped
How To Suggest Your Partner Exercise More, Without Getting Dumped

You meet. Sparks fly. Jager is downed. Numbers are exchanged. You date casually. There’s drama. Now you’re exclusive. You take cute couple pics, go on scenic hikes, and flaunt your impeccable bodies to the world.

Fast forward a few years and the jealousy you felt for each other’s exes, flirty workmates and over-friendly baristas has been replaced with contentment. Trust. Comfort. Before you know it Netflix and ~Chill~ is just Netflix, green juices have been swapped for iced coffee and protein balls have taken a back seat to thickly buttered banana bread.

Suddenly you’re wishing they’d spend more time with their hot PT. But you know this is a mine-field. One false move and they may never forgive you. Worse, one ill timed comment and your relationship could be over. Period. So how do you suggest your girlfriend, boyfriend, husband, significant other etc. get back on the treadmill? You read this guide.

#1 Pick Your Time

So, you’ve decided to tell your S.O to lose weight, and you want to have a positive outcome. To maximise your chances make sure to pick a good time and place. The middle of a busy day not being one of them. You should know your partner well enough to choose a time when they are receptive. Pick a quiet moment, like a Sunday morning, for example, when you are together and there are no particular time constraints. Bring it up gently and don’t phrase things critically (think: “We’ve been eating pretty badly lately, hey” as opposed to, “I think you’re getting fat”). If your partner feels ambushed, they will not be open to your comments.

#2 Be A Role Model

Before and after suggesting your partner make some healthy lifestyle changes, you better make damn sure you look as close to a chiselled Greek god as you can. No-one wants to be your Athena when you look like Jabba the Hut. Also, people who live together tend to have similar habits. So make that salad, set the alarm for that 6am run, and try and drag bae with you and see how they respond before starting any conversation specifically about weight. Repeat after me: subtlety is key.

#3 Reflect On Your Relationship

Make sure you aren’t the reason your partner is putting on weight. Ever heard of emotional eating? Make sure your relationship is in a good place before going after superficial details, and make sure you are coming from a place of love—because you want the best for their health—not because you’re secretly hoping to get signed by Victoria Secret for a couple’s campaign. If your relationship is solid, consider whatever else is going on in your partner’s life: there’s usually an underlying reason for most significant change in people’s behaviour.

#4 Don’t State The Obvious

Expect daggers if you say, “Looks like you’ve put on a few pounds” or “Are you really going to eat that?” According to Edward Abramson, Professor of Psychology at California State University, “Most people are well aware that they’ve gained weight, and criticising (their) actions will probably make (them) increase her unhealthy behaviour, to defy (their) ‘controlling’ husband or boyfriend,” (MH).

#5 Think Big Picture

This is your partner’s life we’re talking about here. Fluctuating weight affects a person’s physical and mental health. So if your partner is both happy and healthy at their current weight, don’t say anything.

#6 Be Supportive

“If she is coming to you for advice, or complains about her weight, it is always best to validate her feelings, and offer to support her,” relationship expert and clinical psychologist Andra Brosh, Ph.D. told Muscle FitnessThis could involve joining a gym together, or finding them an active hobby if they find the gym boring. Dance, tennis, synchronised diving—if something is fun your partner is much more likely to stick at it. Bonus if there is a community aspect (like yoga or crossfit).

“Unsolicited advice, or trying to ‘fix’ her will only create problems and hurt feelings… And at the end of the day, focus on health. Work on eating better, trying new things, keeping it playful and just being happy—together. (Muscle Fitness)”

#7 Take The Plunge

Get your life insurance sorted, hide all the kitchenware, inject a bit of local anaesthetic into both your cheeks and do it.

Snacks You Thought Were Healthy But Actually Damage Your Diet
Snacks You Thought Were Healthy But Actually Damage Your Diet

When you decide to start buying quinoa instead of rice, Lilydale chicken instead of KFC and orange juice instead of soda, sometimes it’s hard to keep track of what’s working and what’s not. And while we all know the creme de la creme isn’t found in any aisle (the produce section should be where the bulk of your food is at), surely the “health food” section is better than junk, right?

That’s what I thought until I saw “whole grain” coco pops.

Luckily for me (and you), Max Lugavere, author of NY Times best-seller #GeniusFoods has some helpful tips on Instagram.

6 “health foods” that are actually 🤔 One of the things that I’ve discovered to be true is that the vast, vast, VAST majority of food manufacturers, food preparers, restaurants, and marketers do NOT care about your health. Of course, MANY do, but they are the exception, not the norm. – 🥥 This is why my hope is that you inform yourself and become vigilant with your food choices. Be curious, ask questions, and support those who actually DO commit to your health. – And of course, eating one of these foods now and then likely won’t do anything to you (other then send your blood sugar temporarily out of whack), but it’s when we make these foods regular staples in our lives, consuming them multiple times a day, that they become highly problematic. – If you have a friend that needs to see this, tag them to spread the word! • • • • • #cleaneating #nutrition #weightloss #healthyfood #instafit #bulletproof #sugar #exercise #sugarfree #paleo #healthyeating #healthychoices #glutenfree #whole30 #healthylifestyle #itsalifestylenotadiet #itsalifestyle #plantbased #whole30approved #healthyliving #fitfood #sugarfreelife #marketing #organic #jerf #junkfood

Max recently posted six “health” foods that are as crucial to a balanced diet as glucose gel is to a non-endurance athlete’s. As he points out, “Of course eating one of these foods now and then likely won’t do anything to you (other then send your blood sugar temporarily out of whack).” However, he continues, “When we make these foods regular staples in our lives they become highly problematic.”

Up first on the hit-list is “heart healthy” cereal, which tends to contain added sugar and refined grains. We recommend replacing this with a healthy banana bread recipe, porridge or (if you’ve got more time on your hands) avocado, eggs, tomato and whole-grain toast.

Up next is agave syrup, commonly associated with “health”, being from nature and so on. Unfortunately it is also highly processed, and contains pure, isolated fructose. We recommend switching it for 100% natural honey, or—even better—cinnamon.

“Fruit on the bottom” yogurt is third on this list, by ‘virtue’ of its added sugar. Max recommends switching this one for natural, full fat, plain greek yogurt and mixing in your own fruit (this saves you money, too).

Grapeseed oil, while it sounds healthier than the stuff they use at Maccas, still makes the cut for this not-healthy health foods list. This is down to its highly proccessed nature and its omega 6 to omega 3 ratio being out of whack. We recommend switching this for extra virgin olive oil.

Barbecue baked beans (or tomato baked beans for that matter) are penultimate on his list, containing a whole bunch of added sugar that is a package deal with the fibre-y goodness they also contain. Switch these for black beans or chickpeas.

Last on the list is orange juice, which contains 6 teaspoons of sugar per glass. While this is still better than Fanta (at least this sugar is ‘natural’) Max says you would be even better off eating an orange, whose fibre make it harder to overindulge on, and which contains more nutrients.

Eddie Redmayne Shows You How To Rock A Suit & Coat To Perfection

Redmayne. Eddie Redmayne. Whilst he’s not in the running as the next 007, his dress sense certainly says otherwise.

Overnight Redmayne stepped out in Paris for the premiere of his fantasy film, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. What’s worth mentioning is the fact that the British actor absolutely owned it on the red carpet by showing men exactly how to wear a suit with a coat.

The immaculately tailored overcoat is finely tucked in through the waist and worn over an equally tailored grey suit. The coat which looks to be a Prada or Burberry item is made of mohair and features a satin finish on the underarm side. The trousers meanwhile sit well at a shorter length to show off his polished black oxford shoes.

Moving back to the top, Redmayne has kept it classic with a crisp white white paired to a burgundy tie with an emblem.

We say no more. Hit the gallery to see how Redmayne owned the red carpet with this winning look.

A Daily Bath Could Be The Secret To Beating Depression, Study Finds
A Daily Bath Could Be The Secret To Beating Depression, Study Finds

Everyone knows that carving out an hour of your day to soak yourself into oblivion (and your fingers into prunes) is a great way to unwind, but did you know that—done regularly—it could help treat depression and insomnia?

A recent study suggests taking a hot bath each day is a better treatment for these conditions than exercise. And while neither depression nor insomnia can be 100% solved by jumping in a hot tub—it can definitely ease some of the symptoms.

So who do you have to thank for tonight’s fragrantly scented bliss? Researchers from the University of Freiburg in Germany, who conducted a study on 45 people struggling with depression.

Split into two groups, half the participants were told to soak in 104-degree water for half an hour every day, while the second group was instructed to do 40 to 45 minutes of aerobic exercise twice a week.

Eight weeks into the experiment the researchers tested the volunteers’ moods on a ‘depression scale’. Those who had taking daily baths were (on average) six points ‘less depressed’ than they were before the experiment began, while the group that had been exercising twice a week were (on average) three points “less depressed.”

“The conclusion: baths were the more effective mood booster,” (Travel + Leisure).

So what do baths have that Anytime Fitness doesn’t? The scientists reckon it’s the effect they have on your circadian rhythm (the body’s internal clock), which controls the functioning of your organs via temperature regulation.

As reported by Travel + Leisure, “Those battling depression often have a disrupted… circadian rhythm (which is why insomnia is a common symptom of the condition). By regularly increasing participants’ body temperatures, the researchers believe they were able to improve their circadian rhythms—and in turn alleviate some of their depression symptoms.”

“Morning exposure to bright light has also been shown to influence circadian rhythms and alleviate depression.”

So although this was a small study, and more research is needed before you go out and buy a liquid-marble throne: there’s no harm in running a few extra baths if you’ve already got one…

This Is What The Batcave For Bicycles Looks Like
This Is What The Batcave For Bicycles Looks Like

Bike stores clearly aren’t what they used to be. That’s if you’re comparing it with the newly unveiled Johannes Torpe Studio bike store, a futuristic shop located in Copenhagen which looks more like Bruce Wayne’s bat cave.

The striking retail space features an arsenal of interior design touches which will leave any IKEA junkie blushing. For starters, the ceilings are lined with gridded illuminated panels complete with mechanical hoists attached to the ceiling.

According to Dezeen, the space was originally a storage warehouse owned by United Cycling – a distributor of high-performance bicycles for serious athletes and dedicated riders. With expansion ideas in the books, it was a natural solution to turn the1,650 square-metre building into a retail space and headquarters for the brand – with the help of Copenhagen-based design firm, Johannes Torpe Studio.

What they’ve created is a space which boasts a dedicated product showroom, workshop, bike-fitting area and lifestyle spaces like meeting rooms and a canteen.

“The result is a clinical and futuristic lab – a toy store for the passionate and serious rider. We call it a modern monastery for the science of cycling,” explained Johannes Torpe Studio.

“The design concept circles around the contrasts between nature and science and the meeting between man and machine.”

“This theme is particularly noticeable in the material choice were warm natural materials such as oak meet the cold industrial feeling of the floors.”

Check out the video below to see how the space was created.

Researchers Believe It's Dangerous For Men Over 35 To Have Children
Researchers Believe It's Dangerous For Men Over 35 To Have Children

When it comes to settling down in life, today’s men seemingly have it good. Date till you’re 35, marry closer to 40, spawn a kid a few years later.

If that’s the kind of life you see panning out, then there’s bad news. A new study from researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine suggests that men older than 35 were at a higher risk for adverse birth outcomes including low birth weight, seizures and the need for ventilation immediately after birth.

The data, which was obtained over a decade of live birth studies in the United States, even goes as far as suggesting that the age of a father can compromise the mother’s health during pregnancy through an increased risk of diabetes.

“We tend to look at maternal factors in evaluating associated birth risks, but this study shows that having a healthy baby is a team sport, and the father’s age contributes to the baby’s health, too,” explained Michael Eisenberg, MD, associate professor of urology and a member of the Stanford Child Health Research Institute.

The study’s conclusion was compiled with data obtained from more than 40 million births. As a general view, the researchers suggest that the older the father, the greater the risk. Those having children at the age of 45 or more were 14 percent more likely to have a prematurely born child. And the news naturally got worse as men got older. Those having children at 50 or older had a 28 percent increase of their newborn needing to be admitted into the neonatal intensive care unit (ICU for premature babies).

The explanation behind this is that once a father reaches 35, there will be a slight increase in birth risks overall. For every year a man ages, his sperm DNA will see an average of two new mutations.

There is some reprieve though for older men looking to conceive. Dr. Eisenberg says that men shouldn’t need to overhaul their life plans since these risks are still relatively low.

“If you buy two lottery tickets instead of one, your chances of winning double, so it’s increased by 100 percent,” Dr. Eisenberg explained.

“But that’s a relative increase. Because your chance of winning the lottery started very small, it’s still unlikely that you’re going to win the lottery. This is a very extreme example, but the same concept can be applied to how you think about these birth risks.”

As such, Eisenberg recommends that his findings be used as educational information for health officials, the public and couples who are planning for a family.

Michael B. Jordan Shows You How To Rock The Modern Day Power Suit
Michael B. Jordan Shows You How To Rock The Modern Day Power Suit

Definition: Power Suit – A type of office suit stereotypically associated with the 1980s. It is characterised by sharp cuts, wide shoulder pads and a stiff rigidity.

It might be thirty years on since the power suit made its debut, but it seems that the iconic look is still alive and well in modern guise thanks to Michael B. Jordan – sans enthusiastic shoulder pads. The Creed actor was spotted in Beverly Hills at the 22nd Annual Hollywood Film Awards sporting one of the slickest looking Burberry power suits of the year (or the decade for that matter).

From afar the suit looked like your standard double breasted grey ensemble, but take a closer look and there’s power play details strewn throughout thanks to the British label.

First order of address? The suit’s fitment. Jordan isn’t exactly a slim guy anymore thanks to his brutal training to fill the shoes of a boxer. Thankfully he had a tailor who knew what he was doing, creating a suit which sits beautifully on Jordan’s shoulders and waist – not too baggy, not too tight. The trousers could be a little bit slimmer but were done well enough with just the right amount of slack and length to avoid the dreaded fashion influencer look.

Now let’s get into the details. Jordan paired the suit to a very conservative blue striped linen tie held down by collar buttons – a very slick business aesthetic. This was further complemented with a subtle lapel tab, gold-plated buttons on the front and sleeves.

Being a friend of the brand also means Jordan got to rock the latest Piaget Antiplano timepiece to really drive home the power player-turned-CEO look.

Throw in a pair of classic polished black dress shoes and you have the modern power suit that will have heads turning whichever boardroom you walk into. It also helps if you’re a unit like Michael B. Jordan.

Square Watches That Will Make You Stand Out For All The Right Reasons
Square Watches That Will Make You Stand Out For All The Right Reasons

Huey Lewis and the News were spot-on when they said it’s hip to be square. Although square and rectangular watches have always been in the minority compared to their round cousins, their appeal endures.

The shape is both modern and pleasingly retro; at once classic and contemporary. Square watches are perfect if you’re in the market for something slightly unusual but still versatile and wearable. Ten of our favourite square watches are below.

Cartier Santos de Cartier

Cartier Santos de Cartier (ref. WSSA0047)

There’s no better place to start this list than with the Cartier Santos de Cartier, which is not only one of the most iconic square watches ever, but straight-up the first wristwatch ever made.

Created in 1904 at the request of enterprising Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, the Santos de Cartier remains one of the most stylish watches one can hope to wear. The modern iteration is available in a wide variety of case materials and sizes. It also features Cartier’s QuickSwitch system: an invisible mechanism that blends into the structure of the case and makes it a cinch to swap straps – say from a classic leather strap to the Santos’ integrated bracelet.

Retail Price: AU$11,200

Rado True Square

Rado True Square Automatic (ref. R27077312)

Rado is an underrated Swiss luxury watch brand that specialises in ceramic watches. No prizes for guessing what shape their True Square watch is.

Crafted from Rado’s high-tech plasma ceramic (which is both incredibly scratch-resistant, light and biocompatible) and boasting an on-trend green sunburst dial, this comfortable and stylish square watch is an eye-catching timepiece that’ll set you apart from the pack.

Retail Price: AU$3,350

Glashütte Original Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date

Glashütte Original Seventies Chronograph Panorama Date (ref. 1-37-02-08-02-62)

Another underrated luxury watch brand with a killer square watch in its repertoire is Germany’s Glashütte Original, with their chunky but funky 70s-inspired Chronograph Panorama Date.

This is one complication-heavy watch. Not only is it a 12-hour chronograph, but it also boasts a large ‘Panorama’ date window (similar to those used by another prestigious German brand, A. Lange & Söhne) but a power reserve indicator elegantly integrated into the small seconds display at 9 o’clock.

Retail Price: AU$20,150

Casio G-Shock DW5600 Series

Casio G-Shock Classic (ref. DW5600-1)

For a more affordable square watch, it’s hard to look past the 5600 Series Casio G-Shock. The 5600 Series is as close as you can get to wearing one of the original square G-Shocks from the 80s and despite its low price remains an incredibly stylish and capable timepiece.

While its feature list is somewhat basic by modern G-Shock standards, it’s got more features than most quartz watches on the market: a powerful backlight, chronograph and alarm functions… It’s also incredibly tough, shock-resistant and water-resistant to 200m.

Retail Price: AU$100

Bell & Ross BR 05 GMT

Bell & Ross BR 05 GMT (ref. BR05G-BL-ST/SST)

French brand Bell & Ross is famous for its square, aviation-inspired watches, so it’s hard to pick a favourite. We’ve gone for the new BR 05, which has a subtly curved design that’s both bold and sleek all at once.

Specifically, we’ve chosen to highlight the GMT variant of the watch, which is capable of displaying the local time in two different time zones. For a brand that’s all about aviation, it’s the perfect complication and one that’s an invaluable tool for both pilots and passengers alike. It also boasts a screw-down crown, sapphire case-back and a water-resistance rating of 100m.

Retail Price: AU$7,900

Hermès H08

Hermès H08 (ref. W049430WW00)

Let’s continue the French theme. Luxury maison Hermès’ newest watch, the H08, is another great square watch that’ll definitely make you stand out – for all the right reasons.

A huge departure from the French brand’s typically restrained, artistic watch offerings and a real contender in the luxury sports watch space, the Hermès H08 features a 39mm cushion-shaped titanium case and the option of either a titanium bracelet or rubber strap, which looks particularly nice in signature Hermès orange.

Retail Price: AU$7,925

TAG Heuer Monaco

TAG Heuer Monaco (ref. CBL2111.BA0644)

Worn by everyone from Steve McQueen and Max Verstappen to Chris Hemsworth and Will Smith, the TAG Heuer Monaco is probably the most famous square watch ever.

Particularly beloved by motorsports fans and named after the famous Monaco Grand Prix, its distinctive boxy case design now houses TAG’s in-house Heuer 02 movement, which boasts an 80h power reserve and 100m of water resistance.

Retail Price: AU$10,250

Apple Watch Series 7

Apple Watch Series 7 (Midnight Aluminium Case with Sport Band)

Horological purists might scoff at the Apple Watch but the fact remains that it’s one hell of a smartwatch. It’s also square and pretty affordable, which is why it makes this list.

It’s onto its seventh iteration now but that doesn’t mean the Apple Watch is running out of tricks in the bag. Not only does it have the biggest display yet (with over 50% more screen area than the Series 3) but it’s got a tougher, thicker crystal; 50m of water resistance; an amazing suite of health and fitness apps; as well as a wide variety of case finishes and strap options.

Retail Price: AU$800

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic Monoface (ref. Q2602540)

Now for something classic. It’s more rectangular than square, but the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is too much of an icon not to make this list.

Not only does its Art Deco design make it stand out aesthetically, but its signature rotating case – originally designed to protect the watch’s face against damage during a game of polo – is one hell of a party trick. Whilst it was originally designed as a sports watch, these days it’s one of the most versatile and handsome dress watches you could hope to wear.

Retail Price: AU$20,600

Hublot Square Bang Unico

Hublot Square Bang Unico Titanium Ceramic (ref. 821.NM.0170.RX)

…And now for something completely different. A new, square take on their popular Big Bang model, the Hublot Square Bang Unico is a futuristic square watch that’s visually dramatic and high-performance.

This model combines a titanium case with a black ceramic bezel; rubber-tipped chrono pushers and crown; and is mounted on a grid-patterned rubber strap with a titanium deployant clasp. Powered by Hublot’s Unico 2 in-house calibre, it has a 72-hour power reserve and 100m of water resistance.

'Bikini' Airline Spends $6.5 Billion On Jets… & An Untold Sum On Dancing Flight Attendants
'Bikini' Airline Spends $6.5 Billion On Jets… & An Untold Sum On Dancing Flight Attendants

Prepare your luggage and duffle bags. Upstart airline Vietjet Aviation have finalised a $6.5 billion jet order with Europe’s Airbus during a visit to Hanoi by French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe.

The budget carrier placed an order last Friday for 50 A321neo jets and 100 Boeing 737 MAX jets in what Reuters called an “aggressive investment… that has provided lucrative business for both Airbus and its U.S. rival Boeing.”

VietJet CEO Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao also told Reuters that Vietjet, “Plans to maintain an average fleet age of just three years to keep fuel and maintenance costs low.”

However the fleet is not the only part of the ‘Bikini Airline’ that experiences a high turnover.

As Luxury Travel Diary reports, “Following the huge success of the random bikini girls appearing on their flights, the airline VietJet is now doing so well that it is spending $6.5 billion on new jets and, one would guess, more bikini-clad dancing girls to show up on their flights and grab headlines.”

Run by 47 year old billionaire, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Vietjet is no stranger to controversy: in 2012, the airline was fined for hosting an onboard “mid-flight dance” by bikini-clad beauty pageant contestants without first gaining permission.

Meanwhile, earlier this year airline management came under fire for yet another publicity stunt, where scantily-clad models were paraded out mid-flight for Vietnam’s unsuspecting U23 football squad.

Although some of the team were mortified, others were only mildly embarrassed, and some didn’t mind it.

Considering a negative reaction from the press has never stopped them in the past, we’re betting that VietJet will keep faith in the “all publicity is good publicity” maxim.

Oh and it’s probably safe to assume they will continue spending their customers’ hard earned dong (for those of you with dirty minds, that’s Vietnam’s currency…) on bikinis and jets.
