Find Eco-Friendly Luxury At The Edgeland House
Find Eco-Friendly Luxury At The Edgeland House

If you’re truly sick of suburbia then you’re going to need an escape that is anything but ordinary. Enter Edgeland House. Located on a rehabilitated brownfield site in central Texas, the Edgeland House is a modern re-interpretation of one of the oldest housing typologies in North America: the Native American Pit House.

Pit Houses are typically sunken, taking advantage of the earth below to maintain thermal comfort throughout the year. Designed by Bercy Chen Studio, the Edgeland House features an insulative green roof above a 7-foot excavation into the ground which means the home is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. This, combined with hydronic heating and a green roof for maximum energy efficiency make it quite the masterpiece.

Both visually and functionally, the Edgeland House is all about healing the land and mending the scars of the site’s industrial past, in turn, raising awareness about a diminishing natural landscape and the world’s finite resources. As well as creating a balance between the surrounding industrial zone and the natural river opposite, over 40 native species of plants and wildflowers have been reintroduced to the Edgeland House green roof, serving to help protect the local eco-system.

It’s eco-friendly luxury at its finest.

6 Ways To Get Over An Embarrassing Text
6 Ways To Get Over An Embarrassing Text

We’ve all been there. One drink too many and suddenly booty calling every past, present and future relationship seems like the best idea you’ve ever come up with. Perhaps you’ve gone a little too far in a string of texts, you’ve sent the wrong text to the wrong person, or you’ve just straight-up minced your words with no way of ever regaining dignity. Relax, it happens to the best of us.You have a few options. You can either wallow in self-pity, hope to god that the person on the receiving end of the text message gets amnesia or spontaneously combusts, or you can follow these quick and easy ways to recover from an embarrassing, and soul-destroying text in magnificent bastard style.

#1 Acknowledge It

If you messed up BIG time and still need to maintain some sort of contact with your drunken text victim, one option is to just acknowledge it. It’s a scary thing to do, but didn’t you mother ever tell you ‘honest is the best policy’? If someone wants to know why they received 25 missed calls, 1 slurred voicemail and 13 single emoji texts, they have every right to know the truth. You were D-R-U-N-K. Diffuse the awkwardness, explain your embarrassment and use the monkey with its hands over its eyes emoji, if you must.

#2 Cover It Up

Mila Kunis as “Jaime” and Justin Timberlake as “Dylan” in Screen Gems’ FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS.
If speaking the truth just ain’t your style, you can always channel the deadly sin within and lie about the whole thing. A popular option is the old ‘friend took my phone’ storyline, or ‘left my phone unattended at a party’ scenario. But a word of warning if you are going to lie: make sure your story is foolproof, and the ‘friend’ really does exist to back you up on your porky pie.

#3 Ignore It

Ignorance is bliss, right? Well, if you’re okay burying your head in the sand, ignoring the embarrassing text exchange altogether might just be the right option for you. Some people, in a moment of rare inebriated clarity, will delete the embarrassing text before bed and wake up like nothing has happened at all. It’s not the most ‘mature’ way of dealing with the situation, but let’s be honest, that ‘you up?’ text wasn’t very mature, either.

#4 Own It

Surely, somewhere in the world, an embarrassing, misspelled drunken text has flourished into a lasting romance. Okay, maybe not…but it’s worth a shot. Unless you’ve sent something truly horrible, why not make the text your own and ‘just go with it’? Laugh it off, soak it up and say it was all part of your master plan in getting someone’s attention. There’s no guarantee that this will work, but if you’ve got too much pride, it might be your only option.

#5 Laugh It Off

If your mates found out about your over-the-top texting behaviour, there’s no chance they’ll let you live it down, so join in on the joke. They say laughter is the best medicine, and in this case, it could be your hangover cure…or at least something to soothe your regret a little. This option is best if the person you sent “I love you” to last night a) can take a joke as well or b) doesn’t bear too much thinking about.

#6 Learn Your Lesson

If you’ve considered all of the above and are think it’s all either ‘too hard’ basket, or pointless because there’s no going back from sending nudes to your boss and co-workers, there’s only one thing left to do: learn from your drunken mistakes. As the Chumbawamba hit of 1997 says, “I get knocked down, but I get up again”, and it’s solid advice for anyone who likes a drink or two, minus the shameful messaging. Next time you’re painting the town red, just turn your phone off. Your friends will understand and any other drunk text victim will merely think you’re phone is dead – it’s a win-win situation for all.RELATED: Take Back Your Embarrassing Texts With This New App

Luxury Travel Experts Name The Best Hotels Of 2016
Luxury Travel Experts Name The Best Hotels Of 2016

We’ve been known to splurge on a hotel now and then. And when we do, we want to be sure it’s worth the money. The travel experts at Virtuoso recently unveiled their picks for the best hotels of 2016 from a sterling crop of nominees.

The Best of the Best awards were announced at the 28th annual Virtuoso Travel Week conference. Celebrating its 10th year, the prestigious competition recognises the industry’s top properties and hoteliers. Fifty contenders battled to be crowned in their categories in 2016. Each exceptional hotel represents the highest standard in its given group and illustrates the industry’s most influential trends.

Virtuoso took several factors into consideration when choosing the winners:

  • History: Legendary hotels continue to endure amongst luxury travellers. Rooms are upgraded and amenities are modernised, but it’s impossible to put a price tag on the timeless essence left by guests who once walked through the doors.
  • Culture: With seven continents, 195 independent countries, and nearly 7,000 different languages in the world, discerning travellers want to see, hear, taste, and feel the authentic attributes of a destination. Properties that establish a deep level of cultural immersion resonate most with upscale hotel enthusiasts.
  • Experience: Luxury travellers increasingly desire careful curation as part of the hotel experience. From high style and haute cuisine, to groundbreaking designs that transform a property, guests are seeking out hotels that deliver a certain “feel” that represents their own lifestyle (and looks great on social media).
  • Conscience: Can a hotel change the way you see the world? Luxury travellers are looking to broaden their “Journey to Global Citizenship,” using travel as a means of educating themselves and their children while simultaneously giving back to a local community in a meaningful, engaging way.

The best hotels of 2016 embody these trends and promise guests experiences worth splashing out on. View the big winners in the gallery above.

5 Damaging Side Effects Of Skipping Meals
5 Damaging Side Effects Of Skipping Meals

How many times have you heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day? And how many times have you skipped it? You make an excuse – “I’m late for work” or “I’m trying to lose weight” – and promise you’ll do better tomorrow.Tomorrow rolls around. You manage a piece of toast before you walk out the door and pat yourself on the back for making healthy choices. But by lunch you’re too busy to get away from your desk (inbox zero doesn’t happen by itself), and before you can say “ping me”, another meal is missed. If you think you can make up for skipping a meal by eating more at the next one, think again. Regularly missing meals isn’t harmless. It can take a huge toll on your health, sometimes in unexpected ways. Below are 5 negative side effects of omitting breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

#1 You’re More Likely To Overeat

skipping mealsIt’s “logical” to think that eating more after a missed meal will rectify the situation, but the hungrier you are, the more your brain will demand you devour. You’re more likely to overeat and consume more calories than necessary, and on top of it, you’re also more likely to choose junk food. So not only do you end up eating more overall, you’re eating more of what’s worst for you.

#2 You’re More Likely To Gain Weight

skipping mealsIt doesn’t stop at eating more, and more unhealthy, food. Because skipping meals makes your body fear starvation, it overcompensates by stubbornly holding on to every calorie you consume. Your metabolism goes haywire, increasing your body’s fat storage and your risk of type 2 diabetes. Other studies have linked failing to eat regularly to heart disease.

#3 Your Mood Takes A Nosedive

skipping meals“Hangry” made it into the dictionary for a reason. We’re all familiar with the crankiness that often accompanies hunger. Skipping a meal sends your mood into free fall by messing with your blood sugar levels. It can also trigger a stress response in your body, which in turn triggers hormones associated with outbursts, mental instability, and mild depression.

#4 Your Focus Fails

Distracted_98The same decreasing sugar levels that tank your mood also affect your ability to concentrate on tasks. When you don’t eat, your brain is unable to get the nutrition it needs to function at optimal levels. Decreased attention span is the result, so don’t skip meals at work in the name of productivity. You’ll get more done if your body and brain are properly fueled.

#5 Your Appearance Feels The Fallout

skipping mealsIn a world of high-def and selfie addiction, appearance matters. Your skin, your hair, your nails, and your muscles suffer when they don’t get adequate nourishment. Hair can become greasy, lifeless, and thinner. Your skin may be dull, blotchy, dry, or blemished. Muscles become weaker and smaller. Nails break more easily. Missing meals is not a pretty picture, inside or out.Your diet deserves better. Eat regularly and eat well.

9 Must-Have Tech Items For the Ultimate Home Theatre

With the proliferation of Netflix, Apple TV, online streaming and the countless other ways you can entertain yourself at home, there’s really no need to leave the house. Whether you’re watching something you’d rather others didn’t hear, or fancy a midnight movie marathon, there are headphones to suit every budget, so shop around for a pair with the highest quality you can afford.

#2 Speaker Set-up

Ideally, you will have a 5.1 speaker system, which includes five speakers and a subwoofer. For larger rooms, a 7.2 system (seven speakers and two subwoofers) will turn an ordinary lounge-room into an immersive cinema experience.

Wireless speakers may seem tempting, what with their space saving and trip-hazard reducing qualities, but cabled speakers offer superior quality and uninterrupted sound quality.

#3 The Perfect Sized Screen

Bigger might seem better, but when it comes to screen size you really need to consider the size and dimensions of the space you’re filling. As a general rule of thumb, the further you plan on sitting from the TV the bigger the screen can be.

Experts suggest measuring the distance between the couch and the wall where the TV will be placed (in inches) and dividing this number by 1½. For example, if your couch is 10 feet (120-inches) from the TVs proposed location, your screen should be no larger than 80-inches. Opt for an LED television rather than LCD or plasma varieties, as they will generally last longer and emit a higher quality picture than the competition.

#4 Flat Panel TV Mount

Pictures-Of-TV-Mounted-On-Wall

Nothing ruins a sleek home theatre quicker than bulky TV cabinets. A better option is to purchase a TV mount for your flat screen. As well as saving on floor space, a mounted TV will feel more cinematic and look a whole lot cooler. Before splashing out any cash, check the mount will be able to comfortably hold the weight of your TV.

#5 Projector

If TV screens aren’t right for you, invest in a high-quality projector that can be mounted from the ceiling. As well as being great space savers, projectors create a more authentic cinematic viewing experience for you and your friends.

Please note that if your home theatre receives a lot of natural light, a projector picture will be less crisp and harder to see, making traditional TV screens a more suitable choice.

#6 Powerful A/V Receiver

AV-receiver-apps

Don’t underestimate the importance of a good A/V receiver. Responsible for video and audio inputs and connecting the TV to the speakers, choose a receiver with as many HDMI ports as your budget allows. Used to plug in things like gaming consoles and DVD players, it never hurts to have more HDMI ports than you plan on using. Also consider the wattage per channel (WPC), and never buy an A/V receiver offering less than 50 watts.

#7 Gaming Console

For a completely immersive gaming experience, a gaming console is essential to any man’s home theatre set-up. Play games, watch DVDs or Blu-Rays and enjoy convenient online streaming all through the one device, like the PlayStation 4. The home theatre is also an excellent place to whip out those gaming consoles from your youth – Atari anyone?

#8 Google Chromecast

chromecast

First released in 2013, Google Chromecast (Chromecast 2 is now available) is one of the smallest but most handy (and cheapest) devices you could purchase for your home theatre. The pocket-sized piece of equipment allows you to stream movies, TV shows and YouTube clips straight from your smartphone or laptop to the TV. With Netflix and other streaming capabilities, Chromecast features voice activation, a HDMI cord and built-in antennas.

#9 HDMI Cable

hdmi

Easy to overlook but essential for a functioning home theatre, HDMI cables are as essential to a home theatre as a sausage sizzle on election day. HDMI cables are used to transmit data digitally, so be sure to stock up and buy a few of differing lengths so you always have one available.

Studies Show That Reading Can Increase Your Lifespan
Studies Show That Reading Can Increase Your Lifespan

Well aren’t you on a good start already. A new study from the Social Science and Medicine journal has indicated that those who read more tend to live longer compared to those who don’t.

The comprehensive study took into account the health of 3,635 subjects over the age of 60, with Yale University School of Public Health researchers uncovering interesting results via three split groups: People who read a maximum of three and a half hours per week, people who read more than that, and those who didn’t read at all.

These three groups were further broken down via age, gender, education status and income. From these stats, the researchers were able to pinpoint reading activity as the sole reason that could be leading humans to a longer life.

Audaciously, the results found that participants who read more than the set three and a half hours per week were 23 percent less likely to die compared to those who didn’t read at all. For those playing at home that’s an extra two years added to your ticker just from the act of being a bookworm. More intriguingly, the journal also found that reading from books, magazines and newspapers were main drivers of the fountain of youth.

If the research is to be believed, it would appear that expanding one’s intellectual scope is also a driver for broadening the expiry date. Get a head start on the best books for men this month. Just don’t be crossing roads whilst reading otherwise this whole study will be debunked.

Researchers Reveal Why Tinder Is Ruining Your Love Life
Researchers Reveal Why Tinder Is Ruining Your Love Life

How has your Tinder love life been going lately? If you’re at the point where swiping right feels like chore and your conversations have been reduced to nothing but an exchange of cliché gifs then you’re not alone. In fact, a group of researchers have just discovered why the Tinder landscape has become so bleak.

The study, which saw researchers from the University of Kansas create 7 fake female profiles and 7 fake male profiles, found that male profiles matched with less than 1% of their swipes, while female users matched with 10.5%.

Researchers also found that along with making matches more quickly, women were 3 times more likely to reach out to a fake male profile and the messages they sent were over 10 times longer, implying they are perhaps more invested in making matches work.

The findings represent a vicious chicken-and-the-egg cycle, where male users are robotically swiping right on almost any profile because women are pickier, but female users are remaining selective because they have to pare down the constant influx of men.

According to sex educator and researcher Justin Lehmiller, women are programmed to be more selective from an evolutionary standpoint, as it’s subconsciously required when finding a mate to reproduce with. It seems that we’ve taken those primitive mindsets from the cave to the Tinder swiping game. Old habits really do die hard.
