An entire cryptocurrency ecosystem worth over US$50 billion was wiped out in a few short days. According to the experts, an unknown trader —or group of traders — used the methods of an “evil genius” to do it.
Crypto investors have seen their portfolios take another substantial beating, as roughly $200 billion ($290 billion AUD) was wiped from the crypto market following the total destruction of a major cryptocurrency.
On Tuesday last week, the 7th largest cryptocurrency by market cap, Terra (LUNA), collapsed to zero, nearly taking the entire crypto market down with it. Social media went haywire, with users posting a host of different theories about the collapse, while tens of thousands of unlucky investors posted details of their losses across Twitter and Reddit.
Following the brutal implosion of the Terra ecosystem, Bitcoin (BTC) dropped below $US25,500 for the first time since December 2020. The crash has only been made worse by the broader market downturn in the “real world” economy, as investors continue to sell their more speculative assets such as tech stocks and early-stage companies.
So, how did a cryptocurrency that was worth more than $30 billion ($44 billion AUD) go to zero in a matter of days? According to some experts, an “evil genius” might be at the center of this mystery…
How It Was Supposed To Work
To keep it as simple as possible, LUNA was a cryptocurrency that powered a “stablecoin” called TerraUSD (UST). A stablecoin is a digital asset that has its value “pegged” to a real asset, typically the US Dollar.
While most stablecoins like Tether (USDT) and USD Coin (USDC) are backed up by reserves of physical cash — TerraUSD was an algorithmic stablecoin. So, when the value of TerraUSD dipped below $1, it could be swapped for LUNA tokens at a small profit by using a series of complicated-sounding “smart contracts.”
How It All Went Wrong…
Theoretically, this was supposed to keep the value of TerraUSD pegged to $1 while simultaneously increasing the value of LUNA.
Unfortunately, something (or someone) caused these smart contracts to stuff up, creating a brutal “death-loop” where TerraUSD lost its peg so harshly that investors rushed to sell their LUNA rather than try to stabilize the value of the TerraUSD coin — tanking the price of both assets simultaneously.
Is An “Evil Genius” To Blame?
While no one legitimately knows exactly what caused the Terra ecosystem to implode, Lisa Wade the CEO of blockchain-finance company DigitalX told ABC that her understanding of the situation may seem almost like a conspiracy theory to some.
“It’s almost like an evil genius plot, because there are a lot of steps to it.”
Wade said that as part of the evil and complex plot, the traders appeared to have purchased around $1 billion worth of UST stablecoins, while simultaneously “shorting” Bitcoin.
“What they did next was they timed the market…they waited until a Saturday night when [trading] volumes were very low, and there were no bids.”
“And then they went into a trading pool and started selling UST in massive volumes, which then triggered all of the subsequent selling in a low-volume market that broke the [US dollar] peg.
“Inside the algorithm was what our team had identified as a ‘death spiral’ … the selling starts to feed on itself from the mechanics of the algorithm.
“So when the death spiral kicked in … the algorithm started selling Bitcoin and Avalanche (AVAX), which triggered more selling…
“Luna was impacted because it’s the underlying [backer] of the UST. So every time UST is bought, LUNA gets burnt, which means there’s less tokens in supply, so the LUNA price goes up.
“And if there’s no buyers and the price goes down, then it starts to feed on itself, because people start panicking and selling LUNA.”

What Does This Mean For Crypto?
Unfortunately, while these traders most likely made bank on this trade, tens of thousands of other crypto investors lost considerable amounts in the fallout, with Links to suicide prevention resources being posted across Crypto Twitter and at the top TerraLuna Reddit page.
Wade summed it up well by saying that while this sort of trading activity isn’t technically illegal, the ethics of it were “questionable.”
Wade also believes that this is really not a good look for cryptocurrency more broadly, as it will likely lead to major regulation of the crypto industry being looked at more critically throughout the world.

Charles Leclerc might be leading the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship, but he can’t seem to catch a break when it comes to racing in his hometown, it seems.
The 24-year-old Monégasque maestro came a cropper at the 13th Historic Grand Prix of Monaco, which sees heritage automobiles from the annals of Formula racing as well as the history of motorsports more broadly duke it out around the iconic Circuit de Monaco, two weeks before the F1 Monaco Grand Prix.
Leclerc was driving Niki Lauda’s former championship-winning 1974 Ferrari 312T and seemed to be doing a cracking job until spun the legendary race car into the wall at Rascasse, one of the most challenging corners of the famous track.
It wasn’t entirely Leclerc’s fault – the car experienced brake failure and the track was already covered in oil and debris from previous crashes – but it must have been a mortifying moment for the young race winner, especially on home soil.
After the crash, former Ferrari driver Jackie Ickx – who was driving his old 1972 Ferrari 312B2 – made his way over to Leclerc, put his arm around him, and shared some kind words. Class. Thankfully the damage to the car doesn’t seem that bad.
Ironically, another of Niki Lauda’s race-winning cars from 1974 was crashed by another former Ferrari driver, Jean Alesi, at last year’s Historic Grand Prix of Monaco. More on that here. That was a much more dramatic crash than Leclerc’s… But it doesn’t take the sting away.
Leclerc has had particularly poor luck racing in Monaco. Despite growing up so close to the track, the highest he’s ever placed at Monaco throughout has been 18th in both 2017 (in F2) and 2018 (in F1).
Leclerc was forced to retire from the 2019 Monaco Grand Prix and didn’t start the 2021 Monaco Grand Prix thanks to a driveshaft failure after a single in qualifying. – a gutting DNS considering he’d secured pole position.
When you thought you already had all the bad luck of the world in Monaco and you lose the brakes into rascasse with one of the most iconic historical Ferrari Formula 1 car.
— Charles Leclerc (@Charles_Leclerc) May 15, 2022
Ah well. Fingers crossed that the dominant form Leclerc’s displayed thus far this year will help him finally secure a win at his home race.
The 2022 Monaco Grand Prix will be held from the 27th to the 29th of May.

Looking to seriously test your strength and stamina with a series of the best rowing workouts? Look no further.
Aside from lifting weights and drinking protein shakes, anyone who steps foot in a gym, or finds themselves grasping a set of dumbbells on a regular basis, can also benefit from completing some cardio training. Not only can it help in your battle to shed body fat, but cardio training also helps to strengthen your heart and improve the flow of blood around your body.
One of the easiest forms of cardio exercise to fall into is, of course, running, but this only has a finite number of benefits. For a more complete full-body workout and to help build muscle in the process, you simply have to turn to a rowing machine workout.
The rowing machine is often a piece of equipment feared by many gym-goers, as they require you to expend a tremendous amount of energy. But let it be known, once you’ve finished a rowing workout, you’ll feel amazing.
You may be thinking, “surely there is only one rowing workout?”, it’s just a rowing machine after all. But you’d be wrong. There are, in fact, various drills and workouts you can complete on a rowing machine that will see you building muscle and shedding body fat in no time.
Looking for further workout inspiration? Check out our complete guide to workouts for men here.
What Are The Benefits Of Rowing Workouts?
According to Healthline, rowing machines engage around 86 percent of the muscles in your body, which is roughly split 70/30 between lower body and upper body, respectively. It’s also an exercise that is deemed safe for anybody to try, including blind people and those with low vision. Because using a rowing machine only increases in difficulty relative to the amount of effort you put in, it can be made as easy or as hard as you like.
Some people love rowing for its meditative benefits too, which come as a result of the four-step movement process required to complete an effective row, and naturally, using a rowing machine to workout has numerous benefits for your heart and overall cardio fitness.
Where To Buy A Rowing Machine?
If you’re not a member of a gym, that doesn’t mean you have to miss out on the myriad benefits rowing machine workouts provide. A plethora of gym equipment companies have made rowing machines available for you to buy and install in your own home, and best of all, you don’t really need that much space.
There are different options to consider when it comes to rowers, with the two main choices being either air-powered or water-powered. Air-powered rowers require you to spin a fan which creates air-resistance. These machines can also have the level of resistance/difficulty adjusted easily with a damper on the side, and they can display highly accurate data based on your stroke speed, distance covered, etc.
Water-powered rowing machines use, you guessed it, water to create resistance. They can be quieter than air-powered rowing machines, and the splash of water can even be considered therapeutic. Some rowing fanatics feel the data displayed isn’t as accurate or as in-depth as air-powered machines, but for some recreational rowing you’ve got nothing to worry about.
Ultimately, both make great indoor rowers, and neither takes up too much space.
Hydrow Rowing Machine

The Hydrow indoor rower is essentially a Peloton, but for rowing. It actually works using electromagnetism, as opposed to air or water, but combined with the live on-screen workouts which place you inside a conventional racing rowing boat, you’ll feel like you’re on water.
Dick’s Sporting Goods

Sports and fitness equipment retailer Dick’s Sporting Goods stocks a range of rowing machines to suit every budget and rowing style. Whether you’re looking for your very first indoor rower and don’t want to break the bank, or you want a top-of-the-range piece of equipment that uses magnetism and displays every possible data metric you can think of, Dick’s is the store to head to.
Academy

Academy Sports & Outdoor is another retailer stocking a wide range of rowing machines. The majority of their range comes in well under $1,000, making it a perfect place to pick up your very first rower. It’s mainly air-powered rowing machines in stock, but you’ll also find a few magnetised indoor rowers too.
Best Rowing Machine Workouts
So, you’ve snapped up your perfect indoor rower and you’re ready to put your body through some high intensity workouts and burn a serious number of calories. What are some of the best workouts you can perform on your rower? Allow us to explain all.
How To Use A Rowing Machine
Before you even think about performing rowing machine workouts, you need to understand how to perform an effective row first.
Place your feet in the stirrups and tighten the straps so your feet are firmly locked in place. Bring the seat forward on the rail, and grab the rowing handle. This is where you need to get into what is known as ‘the catch’ position.
Extend your arms, bend your upper body forwards at the hips and keep your shoulders locked down. You may find your heels lift off the foot plates a little, and this is perfectly ok.
Next comes ‘the drive’, the main portion of the rowing movement. Push your feet into their mountings, and drive back with your legs, keeping your arms straight. Once your legs become close to straight, pivot your upper body at the hip so that you’re now leaning backwards. Pull your arms – and the rowing handle – to just below your ribs. You have just completed one stroke.
To ‘recover’ you pretty much to reverse the movement you just performed. Bring your body back over your hips so that you’re leaning forward with your arms extended. Once your hands have gone beyond your knees, you can bend them and slide forward on the seat, so that you’re back in a tucked position, before driving back out with your legs again.
This is what making rowing such an effective full body workout, because it targets your legs, core and arms all in one swift movement.
You don’t need – or want – to expend too much energy or effort when completing the arm pull until you’re comfortable with the stroke movement. You should wait until you’re at a level where everything happens smoothly and without too much thinking.
Rowing Machine ‘Sprint’ Workout
Similar to what you may do on a treadmill, you can perform the rowing equivalent of sprints on a rowing machine. Set yourself a time goal: 20 minutes is a great place to start. Spend around five minutes warming up on your rowing machine – rowing at around 50 per cent effort – before performing some hard rowing for 40-seconds, and easing up on the effort for 20-seconds. Repeat this sequence for 10 minutes, and then give yourself another five minutes to cool down.
This is essentially a HIIT workout on your indoor rower, and you should find your heart rate increases considerably.
Rowing Machine Distance Workout
Your rowing machine should have a function where you can set a distance goal to bring down to zero, with the idea being you complete it in a faster time each time you complete it. A good distance to try this with is around 2,000 metres. It’s not too far, but should provide enough of a challenge to really make you stay conscious of your pace – and to make you sweat, of course.
Rowing Machine Partner Ladder Workout
Live or train with a friend who loves rowing just as much as you? Then you need to put yourselves through this awesome tag-team rowing machine workout.
The idea of ladder workouts is to perform progressively more, or progressively less distance each round (they can also be applied to workouts with weights, where you increase and then decrease the number of reps you perform).
With one of you starting on the rowing machine and the other resting, row to 500-metres as fast as you can, before jumping off and swapping with your partner. Now, you get to rest while your partner rows as quickly as they can.
Once you’ve both completed 500-metres, bring the distance goal down to 400-metres, then 300, 200, 100, in the same tag-team format. This style of rowing workout brings a slight competitive nature into the mix, as you’ll no doubt want to row your distance faster than your partner, yet you’ll likely find you need a longer rest period to recover from the extra effort you’ve put in.
Rowing Machine Calorie Counter Workout
Similar to the ladder rowing workout above, the calorie counter rowing workout requires you to hit a certain number of calories is a defined period of time. This rowing workout also incorporates the ladder, model, with the number of calories required to be reached increasing with each passing minute.
Start your targets low, such as five or six calories, and aim to reach that target within one minute of rowing. For the next one minute interval, increase the number of calories by one, and so on and so forth, until you’ve completed 10-15 minutes of rowing.
If you’re just starting out with indoor rowing, then aim for 10 minutes to start with. Once your skill level, strength and fitness increases, you can increase the amount of time you row for.

A woman has revealed on a Facebook mothers group that her friend flies business class, while booking her children into economy. Some people thought it was a great idea; others said it was rude (and an example of bad parenting).
A business class passenger’s act of self-care has raised eyebrows online, with some calling it selfish, and others calling it smart.
A woman took to social media to share how her friend likes to fly at the pointy end of the plane, while leaving her children in cattle class. She did not share how old her friend’s children were (a crucial detail).
This story was brought to our attention by ESCAPE, who reported that the woman took to Facebook in moral bewilderment, writing: “I just found out my friend flies Business Class with her primary school-aged kids as unaccompanied minors in Economy.”
“Nearly fell off my chair as it had never occurred to me not to be sitting with them, making sure they’re OK through takeoffs, turbulence, general supervision etc through a long flight. I figure we all fly Business or all Economy.”
“Maybe I’m too helicopter? Is this a common thing I just never knew about? Or maybe kids’ ages matter? What do you do?”
RELATED: Kids On Planes: Why Kids Shouldn’t Be Allowed To Fly Business Class
Some commenters said it wasn’t just bad parenting, but also bad citizenry (letting your children’s unchecked behaviour potentially disrupt other passengers in economy).
“It makes it pretty clear to her kids what your friend thinks of them,” one mum said.
Another said: “I find this completely disrespectful to the other passengers that end up sitting near the kids. Either everyone goes Business or everyone goes Economy.”
Others found it inspirational. One tagged their friend saying they should try it with their kids next time they fly (“why didn’t we think of this before”).
ESCAPE reported that an industry insider said it’s a pretty unlikely story (though they didn’t rule out the fact it could, technically have happened, so long as the mum paid the airline a fee to have her kids travel as unaccompanied minors).

Whether or not kids should be allowed to fly business class is a debate that crops up fairly regularly online. From AskThe Pilot to news.com.au, many outlets and travel bloggers have asked the question (with many people pointing out the fact that adults can, in some instances, be just as irritating as kids).
RELATED: Man’s ‘Innocent’ Act Sparks Flight Etiquette Debate
As for the whole letting children fly alone debate, quite a few publications have covered this too (from One Mile At A Time to Traveller). The quetion has been asked on Tripadvisor too, with one business class loving mother writing: “As somebody that has worked hard to be able to fly in Premium cabins, I am very conscious of our daughter growing up over entitled”.
If the kids were 15, for instance, letting them fly in economy on their own is quite a different situation to letting them fly alone if they are 5…
According to The Mirror, four in 10 parents would leave their kids alone in economy to enjoy a first class flight (according to a survey of 2,000 mums and dads).
The age-old debate continues…

Want to know which is the best crypto wallet in Australia? You’ve come to the right place.
Now that cryptocurrency has officially gone mainstream – more than 25% of Australians own some type of digital asset – it’s imperative Australians have one of the best crypto wallets to store their funds securely. With so much money heading into the crypto industry, using a high-security crypto wallet is the number one priority for any crypto investor, regardless of the amount of crypto they own.
You might be thinking “eh, I’ve only 10 bucks worth of crypto”… it’s worth remembering that $10 worth of Bitcoin 10+ years ago would be worth more than $670,000 today. With the number of attempted hacks and dodgy dealings in the world of crypto, having your funds in a secure crypto wallet is by far the most important move you can make from the get-go.
In This Crypto Wallet Article:
What is a Crypto Wallet?
A crypto wallet is a place where you have secure access to your cryptocurrency and digital assets.
Without getting too technical, a crypto wallet doesn’t actually store your cryptocurrency in a new digital space. All cryptocurrencies are stored on their respective blockchain, which is a global decentralised ledger that exists in cyberspace. Your crypto wallet stores the unique address where your cryptocurrency can be found on that blockchain, while also containing the only private key that can access that unique address.
There are two main types of crypto wallet that investors need to be aware of: hot wallets & cold wallets.
A hot wallet is a crypto wallet that is connected to the internet in some way. This makes buying and selling crypto much more convenient. Practically every crypto wallet that you use on a phone or laptop will be a hot wallet.
A cold wallet is a crypto wallet that comes in a physical form and is not connected to the internet. This makes them essentially impossible to hack, which is ideal for investors looking to hold large sums of crypto securely for long periods of time. Cold wallets usually look a lot like a USB stick and work in a similar way.
In this comprehensive crypto wallets review, we will be looking exclusively at hot wallets, and going through absolutely everything you need to know about which hot wallet is best for you and your individual financial needs.
Hot Wallets Explained
Without getting too technical, it’s super important that you don’t get confused when it comes to the different types of hot crypto wallet. Surprisingly, not many crypto investors are aware of, or understand the difference, between the two categories of hot wallets.
These are called custodial and non-custodial crypto wallets.
Custodial (Exchange-Based) Wallets
If you’ve ever opened up an account with a crypto exchange like Coinspot, Binance or Crypto.com then you already have a custodial wallet. A custodial, or exchange-based wallet is essentially built into the platform or app you use to purchase crypto and doesn’t require any extra steps to set up.
A custodial wallet offers the benefit of being extremely user-friendly, as your exchange has “custody” of your wallet, which requires less responsibility from your end in terms of storing passwords and managing security.
Custodial wallets are a great choice for investors who want quick access to buying and selling their digital assets. If you’re opening up your crypto portfolio every day to move things around, offload some Bitcoin in the morning and purchase some ETH in the evening, then having a custodial crypto wallet is probably the best option for you.
Non-Custodial Wallets
Non-custodial wallets on the other hand, usually come in the form of an entirely separate app or program, and it means that there are some extra security measures built in.
When you sign up for a non-custodial crypto wallet, you will be asked to write down a “seed phrase” which is a randomly generated sequence of 12 to 24 words. A seed phrase can also be called your “keys”. A non-custodial wallet is more secure because there isn’t a third party that can potentially prevent you from accessing your crypto assets, however if you lose your seed phrase, you lose your crypto.
Most major crypto exchanges now have their own standalone, non-custodial wallets that are semi-integrated into the native exchange. For example, Crypto.com and Coinbase are both major crypto exchanges that have their own, non-custodial wallet apps that are separate from the exchange. Apart from the security benefits, there is also a psychological advantage to having a separate wallet as it makes it harder to “panic sell” and makes it easier to flex those “diamond hands”.
Hardcore cryptocurrency purists are well-known for repeating the phrase: “not your keys, not your coins”, which is essentially saying that unless you have your crypto stored in a non-custodial wallet, it’s not truly yours…
With all this mind, it’s time to take a look at the best exchange-based (custodial) wallets available for Australian crypto investors in 2022.
Best Custodial (Exchange-Based) Crypto Wallets
CoinSpot
As Australia’s most trusted and secure crypto exchange, CoinSpot is the top choice when it comes to choosing an exchange-based crypto wallet.

It has undergone the most audits and it’s the only Australian crypto exchange to receive ISO 27001 certification (extremely high information security). CoinSpot is also registered with Blockchain Australia, the Australian Digital Commerce Association and AUSTRAC. All of these organisations work to prevent technical mishaps, financial crimes, scamming and any other unsavoury business from occurring.
Secondly, if you’re looking for a simple, easy-to-use platform, CoinSpot is probably the best choice for you. CoinSpot’s user-friendly design makes it possible for a total beginner to navigate their app with ease.
Finally, CoinSpot’s selection of over 350+ different cryptocurrencies is the largest range in Australia making it a no-brainer for Australian crypto enthusiasts. On CoinSpot, investors can purchase all of the major crypto assets, such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH) and Binance Coin (BNB) as well as a massive range of altcoins.
The only major drawback is that CoinSpot is only available for investors looking to trade in Australian Dollars (AUD).
You can check out our full CoinSpot review here.
Swyftx
Swyftx is another Australian-owned cryptocurrency exchange with a strong focus on security and user experience. They are an extremely solid choice for any investor looking for a secure and easily-accessible custodial crypto wallet.

The Swyftx platform is beginner-friendly enough for a total newbie to navigate buying and selling crypto with ease, while also offering more technical features for the advanced traders out there.
While Swyftx doesn’t have ISO27001 certification like CoinSpot, they are registered with AUSTRAC and take a series of added measures to ensure that cryptocurrency stored on their exchange remains safe at all times. Like all major crypto exchanges, funds stored with Swyftx are covered by insurance to ensure that investors never lose funds even if the exchange were to be hacked.
Swyftx offers a competitive 0.6% fee on all trades, and have a selection of over 280+ cryptocurrencies for investors to choose from. They offer an advantage over CoinSpot by supporting more deposit features with less fees, allowing Australian investors to purchase cryptocurrency instantly via credit or debit card in AUD.
You can read our full Swyftx review here.
Crypto.com
Crypto.com is a Singapore-based exchange with over 10 million users. The exchange offers a wide array of different blockchain-based products—allowing users to stake their crypto, purchase NFTs and more. Crypto.com is for investors that are looking to do a little bit more than just buy and hold digital assets.

When it comes to your crypto wallet’s security on the exchange, Crypto.com is one of the most secure options that you can find. Crypto.com ensures that 100% of its user’s coins are backed-up in cold storage, meaning that even if the exchange were to be hacked and drained of all funds, every user’s coins would still be completely safe. Crypto.com also has $360 million in insurance against third party theft and potential damage to their cold storage units.
While Crypto.com does charge slightly higher fees than CoinSpot and Swyftx for deposits and various transactions, it makes up for this by offering a series of staking rewards for investors as well added benefits for those who choose to use the exchange’s native cryptocurrency—CRO.
RELATED: Best Crypto Cards
Crypto.com has also recently partnered with VISA to offer the world’s first cryptocurrency-based debit & credit cards. These cards offer a series of perks, including free Netflix & Spotify as well as VIP airport lounge access for premium cardholders.
You can read our full Crypto.com review here.
Binance
Binance is the world’s largest crypto exchange based on both users and daily trading volume. It is well-known for its expansive range of cryptocurrencies, offering 350+ digital assets on the platform. Like Crypto.com, Binance offers an extensive range of blockchain-based products to investors, however, the user interface can be a bit challenging for new crypto investors.

Binance is extremely security-focused and has only ever been the victim of one relatively minor attack in the past. Binance does not disclose what percentage of users digital assets are held offline in cold storage, however, they do state that all user’s funds are completely insured. This means that if Binance were to be hacked tomorrow and you woke up to find your crypto wallet empty, Binance will reimburse whatever you lost.
Binance offers some of the lowest trading fees, especially if investors use Binance’s native tokens: BNB and BUSD. While the exchange has a ‘Lite’ feature that simplifies the layout for new users, Binance also offers the most advanced features available for retail investors. So, if you’re comfortable with the more technical aspects of crypto investing and trading, Binance is definitely the exchange for you.
Seemingly in direct competition with Crypto.com, Binance is scheduled to release the Binance VISA Card later this year.
You can read our full Binance review here.
Coinbase
Coinbase is the largest cryptocurrency platform in the United States and offers a variety of features that make it suitable for Australian investors. Firstly, the Coinbase platform offers a series of educational tools to inform new users about cryptocurrency, even paying them to complete quizzes. Unfortunately for Australian users, Coinbase only denominates prices in USD and its fees are quite high relative to other more Aussie-suitable crypto platforms.

When it comes to the reliability of your crypto wallet, however, Coinbase is extremely secure—98% of all customer assets are stored offline using cold storage in a network of safe deposit boxes around the world. Coinbase also uses bank-standard encryption and security for its website and exchange.
While Coinbase may be very easy to use and provide a series of educational tools for new users, there are probably better platforms and exchanges that you can set up a crypto wallet with. Coinbase’s customer service regarding technical issues and malicious attacks has been extremely poor in the past—receiving lots of negative attention from thousands of angry users.
Check out our Coinbase review for a full, in-depth look at how this wallet performs.
Best Non-Custodial Crypto Wallets
Non-custodial crypto wallets have developed from clunky applications where investors would store their idle crypto—to fully interactive and highly usable features of the internet that provide access to different blockchains, metaverses and DApps.
Regardless of features, all non-custodial crypto wallets prioritise strong user ownership and control of crypto assets. When you transfer funds to a non-custodial crypto wallet, it is entirely yours as long as you maintain possession of your “seed phrase”.
Ultimately, non-custodial crypto wallets are for those who want direct control over their digital assets. As the early crypto enthusiasts would say: “Not your keys, not your coins.”
Trust Wallet

Trust Wallet is the official crypto wallet of Binance and is without a doubt, the stand-out choice for Australian crypto investors. Trust Wallet is designed with user experience in mind, is loaded with cool features that are easy to navigate, and supports a mind-boggling 1 million+ digital assets.
Trust wallet works by storing your private key locally on your phone, as well as allowing you to write down your recovery phrase separately. Your private key and recovery phrase never actually touch Binance’s servers, which means that it is essentially impossible to compromise unless someone steals your private key. You can also set up Trust Wallet anonymously without providing any personal details.
While Trust Wallet stores your crypto safely it also allows you to buy, sell or swap straight from the wallet. Staking and lending products are also available within the app. You can use Trust Wallet to store your NFTs, access DApps and DeFi platforms and even play blockchain-based games…
The only relatively minor downside of Trust Wallet is that there is no desktop version available.
Crypto.com DeFi Wallet

The Crypto.com DeFi wallet works in sync with the Crypto.com app, allowing users to transfer funds seamlessly from the exchange to their own private wallet. This crypto wallet really only makes sense to use if you’re a Crypto.com user, as it allows for full integration on everything Crypto.com related and provides massive incentives for using the CRO token.
The Crypto.com DeFi wallet supports more than 300 tokens and provides access to a variety of staking and lending products. More advanced users can access Crypto.com’s native Cronos Chain and trade a massive number of different tokens via the DeFi wallet.
Overall, this crypto wallet is extremely secure but it only makes sense for investors to use if they are already using the Crypto.com app as well. Investors that are not Crypto.com users would be much better off opting for Trust Wallet.
ZenGo Wallet

ZenGo made the list not just because of its user-friendly design and wealth of educational tools designed to teach new investors about crypto, but because of its incredibly unique security features. These simplify the process of securing a non-custodial wallet and provide an extra fail-safe, meaning that you can never truly be locked out of your ZenGo crypto wallet for good.
ZenGo decided that traditional private keys (a recovery phrase) are old news, and instead uses two independently created mathematical secret ‘shares’ instead. One share is stored on your phone while the other is on the ZenGo server. Because there’s no single point of failure, even if something happens to one of the shares, your crypto will remain secure.
ZenGo also took a new approach to 2FA (2-factor authentication), a relatively standard security feature in both crypto and the web more broadly. ZenGo instead implemented 3FA: 3-factor authentication. The three factors that keep your funds safe are email, a back-up file and a 3D biometric face map.
So, instead of you keeping a recovery seed phrase safely stored on a piece of paper somewhere, ZenGo’s restore options are based entirely on a biometric scan of your face. This means that even if your house burns down and you lose everything, all you would need to do is scan your face to match the 3D biometric face map, and your account is restored.
The major downside to ZenGo is that it only supports around 70 coins. Users can still buy and sell crypto directly from the wallet, however, the limited availability makes ZenGo a better option for storage.
MetaMask

MetaMask is a good deal more complicated than the other wallets mentioned, but it is by far the most versatile digital wallet that automatically allows you to send and store ERC-20 tokens. You can also add a variety of different chains and networks manually on Metamask to store and exchange unique, lesser-known tokens.
Metamask was designed back in 2016 intending to assist crypto traders with moving niche pairs around on different blockchains. The MetaMask wallet works by connecting a regular browser like Google Chrome or Firefox to the Ethereum blockchain by acting as a browser extension.
MetaMask is one of the best choices for an all-round crypto wallet, as it allows more advanced crypto enthusiasts to access DApps and the different “metaverses”. If you want to get involved in the metaverse, having a MetaMask wallet is the way to do it, as sites like Decentraland and Sandbox require connecting a crypto wallet to get started.
It’s worth noting that when moving tokens around on MetaMask, you may need to modify the gas price (the charge you pay to miners) before sending tokens on the Ethereum network. Always make sure to check the gas price before you make a transfer on MetaMask, because you can accidentally end up paying through the nose for a relatively small transaction…
MetaMask’s smartphone app, MetaMask Mobile for Android and iPhone, was released in September 2020. Users can set up new profiles or log in with their existing MetaMask accounts using the smartphone app, which has the same features as the browser-based version, and allows users to manage funds on the go.
Best Bitcoin Wallet
Electrum

For the Bitcoin purists out there, Electrum remains one of the most trusted and well-established crypto wallets for dealing purely with Bitcoin. It’s a great choice for experienced users that have a solid understanding of Bitcoin.
The app has a pretty outdated interface and only supports Bitcoin, but what it lacks in cosmetics it makes up for with greater security and customisation than many other crypto wallets available for use. Electrum is open source, which means that many software developers have reviewed its code, minimising the chance of dangerous flaws in the software to essentially zero.
When using Electrum, you can choose the level of security you wish to use. For example, you can create a completely standard crypto wallet, a crypto wallet with 2FA (2-factor authentication), or a multi-signature wallet (extremely secure). You can add custom words to your recovery seed phrase, to increase security even further.
Electrum is by far the best option for those who are a little more tech-savvy and are looking to exclusively purchase Bitcoin to hold it securely for a long period of time.
Crypto Wallet Security Tips
What Happens If I Forget My Crypto Wallet Password?
If you forget your password to a custodial (exchange-based) crypto wallet, you are usually able to reset it on the exchange’s website. Your crypto exchange will usually send you an email with steps to reset your password. This is one of the major advantages of using a custodial wallet—your funds can always be recovered if you forget or lose your password.
For non-custodial crypto wallets, however, you will only be able to access it if you have your recovery seed phrase. If you lose your recovery / seed phrase you will be locked out of your crypto wallet permanently, so make sure you store your recovery phrase somewhere extremely secure where you will never lose it.
How Do I Safely Store My Recovery Seed Phrase?
If you’re deadset on storing your crypto in a non-custodial crypto wallet regardless of whether it is hot or cold, it is extremely important to write down the recovery seed phrase in the correct order and store it safely in case you need it in an emergency.
The best practice is to store your recovery phrase on paper, not electronically, otherwise, there is a risk it can be stolen by hackers. Handwrite your recovery seed phrase so there is no trace of it on your computer, and make sure it is legible. Double-check that you have written it down correctly and number each word so that you can’t mistake the order of the words.

The post Best Crypto Wallet Australia 2022 appeared first on DMARGE Australia.
I, a 27-year-old, bought a skateboard last year in lockdown (I also bleached my hair blonde). Here’s how it helped me deal with stress.
I’m not the first old person to buy a skateboard. The internet’s full of them. This Vox writer did it. This Outside reporter did it. This ABC journalist did it.
Every ‘adult learner’ has a different journey. But – from mums to tech bros to middle aged men – everyone agrees on one thing: it’s nostalgic.
For this British Vogue writer (and mum of four), skateboarding helped her remember the grungy boyfriend fantasies of her teenage years (and the fluoro pink ‘Pray For Dior’ skateboard deck she bought on her year abroad in Paris).
For this 35-year-old ABC writer, skateboarding helped her cope with the realisation that her friends were often too busy at work or with their kids to drink with her at the pub.
For this 25-year-old Vice writer, skateboarding was a response to the fear that she had become boring (she started skating in the hope that it might make her less depressed, neurotic and concerned with low carb dieting).
For this Vox writer in his 30s, the attraction was that “I was special in my own incompetence, and therefore beyond comparison.”
Despite sneering at all these desperados, skateboarding soon became my safe space. I started resonating with a culture that was cool, like, 20 years ago, and loving every bit of it.
I became everything I hated: an old person who skated for weird, incomprehensible reasons, rather than a young person who skated for the hell of it.
I’d whack my headphones on and hark back to a time when there were no lockdowns, Blink 182 was cool and cortisol was a cream at the chemist (rather than something randomly making my heart race).
Although I wasn’t waxing lyrical about skating at the time (I thought I was just bored), looking back, the whole ‘stress outlet’ and ‘nostalgia’ elements definitely played a role in why I found it so fun.
I also began to associate skating with beer – a great form of liquid courage.
There was also an element of masochism. Coming home battered and bruised is weirdly satisfying.
There’s also something nice about having something in your control. Even when you suck at skating, you can always improve. You can be mentally lazy and not plan things out – but succeed at a new trick through pigheadedness and luck.
When you’re feeling out of control with other things in your life (like a pandemic) it’s nice to have that sense of reassurance.
I don’t mean to give the wrong impression either. I don’t have clinical depression or anxiety. The pandemic didn’t affect me that badly. Oh, and I also have a weirdly resilient (some might say unwarranted) sense of self-worth. So I don’t mean to belittle those who have severe anxiety or stress, by claiming to have anything like that (so far in my life I’ve been lucky enough to only get stressed when there are good reasons to be stressed, which are usually caused by f*ck ups of my own making).
So I’m just trying to comment on the experience of a usually pretty chill person who found themselves a bit more stressed than usual during last year’s lockdowns, and how skateboarding helped me cope with that.
Even from my very limited experience, however, I can see how coping mechanisms can be addictive as well as helpful. If you skate late into the night, for instance, while smashing cans of VB, though you may de-stress yourself at the time, you could wind up making yourself more tired, and your stress worse the next day.
And that’s before you land flat on your back, and have to hobble around for a week…
To ask whether it’s risky to treat anxiety with a hobby, rather than therapy (given, it seems, everyone is going to therapy lately), I spoke to Dr Lars Madsen, a clinical psychologist on the Advisory Board at The Mindshift Foundation.
He told me: “I think that most people have a vulnerability to feelings of anxiousness – there is some evolutionary value in that – so anxiousness is a ‘stable’ characteristic of the human state.”
“Learning how to cope with anxiousness or negative feelings through a range of strategies is a good thing – talking to others is of course one way that we can learn how to deal with such – but does not have to be the only way.”
Dr Madsen continued: “There are many well recognised psychological benefits from engaging in physical activities that elevate heart rate and release all types of hormones. Whilst engaging in personally meaningful activities (like skateboarding) is also well recognised (and proven) as strategies for managing negative moods/anxiety.”
Dr Madsen also told me that doing a valued hobby can “engender a strong sense of purpose and meaning in a person’s life.” He explained that in addition to feeling a sense of competency, hobbies can assist with “buffering low self-esteem and feelings of worthlessness.”
“Taken together these feelings can improve general motivation, reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness, and improve mood.”
Dr Lars Madsen
No wonder skating is great for a breakdown…
As for the reason I enjoy getting bashed around a bit, Dr Madsen told me this is probably the experience of learning, pushing yourself to the limit and feeling on the edge.
“These types of physical experience can induce a state of what is described as ‘flow state.’”
Finally, on whether my skating was a healthy stress valve or an unhealthy escape, Dr Madsen told me: “That depends on what it is that is burning you out! I think for regular day to day stress and challenges (meeting deadlines, mortgage, groceries etc.) reality is stressful and demanding … sometimes there is nothing much to talk about or problem solve etc.”
In those cases, skating (or just exercise in general) could be a perfectly fine answer to your stress.
“A good run or gym workout [or skating] can help to discharge stress and recharge [in those cases]! But if the things bothering you are chronic and enduring issues (trauma etc.) then having these hobbies can be a distraction from dealing with problems that need to be dealt with to get on with your life.”
That’s not to say you shouldn’t have your hobbies, but that they might not be enough on their own.
After hearing all this from Dr Madsen, and after over a year of (re)learning to skate as an adult, I reckon skating is great. It fulfils a physical need (exercise), a social need (if you’re sociable) and even a spiritual need (#prayfordior).
It’s not a magic solution though. If you’re an antisocial, undisciplined introvert with night owl tendencies, it can create problems as well as solve them.
So to sum up: skateboarding is just a fun thing to do. And I guess there’s a reason it’s cheaper than therapy.
The good thing is that skateboarding is a lot more accessible than therapy. And for those that do it right (read: you don’t use it as an excuse to get drunk on a Tuesday or to blast ‘What’s My Age Again?’ on repeat), it can be great.
Plus: if your definition of ‘youth’ is being optimistic and bruised, then, sure, skateboarding can help you recapture it.

Australia has a small yet very competitive car market that’s seen many successful international brands enter and quickly exit after lacklustre sales in recent years: think Dodge, Infiniti or Opel. But none of those brands boasts their own Formula 1 team… Which makes Alpine rather special.
Not to be confused with Alpina (a BMW tuning house that’s sold through BMW dealerships in Australia that’s also not long for this world), Alpine is a French sports car brand that, in its modern form, is the performance division of automotive giant Renault.
The Alpine brand has a long and somewhat complicated history – first as a tuner, then a manufacturer in its own right – and was a slightly obscure note in mainstream automotive history until Renault decided to revive the brand back in 2017 with the Alpine A110, a lightweight 2-door coupé named and styled after the iconic A110 berlinetta of the 60s and 70s.
On top of that, Renault rebranded their famous F1 team as Alpine last year – demonstrating how Alpine has morphed into Renault’s sole performance division, just as Mercedes-AMG has become for Mercedes-Benz, for example. With us so far?
The ‘new’ Alpine A110 (if you can call a car that’s been in production for half a decade already ‘new’) is currently the only car that Alpine makes, and it’s actually a superb car. Former Top Gear host James May has called it “the greatest thing to come out of France since the Mouli cheese grater.”
Yet after only 4 years on the market in Australia, Alpine and the A110 are disappearing. And it’s no mystery why: the Alpine A110 is the worst-selling vehicle the country has seen for a very long time.

How bad has the Alpine A110’s sales been? According to VFACTS, only 85 units have sold in Australia since its introduction. Ouch. That’s almost as bad as the sales of the Renault Zoe, which was sold here from 2017 to 2020 and pulled from the market after only 63 examples were sold during those 3 years.
RELATED: While Australia Makes It Hard For You To Buy EVs, You Can Get One For Free In Germany
2022 has been especially grim for Alpine, with the brand literally only selling 1 car per month in January, February and March.
In comparison, Lotus – whose lightweight cars are very similar to the Alpine A110 – sold 18 cars in March. Hardly enough to set the world on fire but still. Porsche, whose Cayman is another natural rival for the A110, sold 275 cars. For comparison, the best-selling brand, Toyota, sold 21,828 cars.
To be fair, Alpine’s grim 2022 sales figures are largely due to the fact that the A110 has been discontinued in Australia, with no new supply forthcoming – dealers are just selling what they’ve got left on lots. Once they’re all sold, Alpine will no longer exist in Australia… At least in the short term.

The A110 is being discontinued thanks to the introduction of Australian Design Rule 85/00, which requires new cars sold here to have side impact airbags – something the A110 doesn’t have in order to keep the car light.
“Given only [85] units have sold in Australia since its introduction… it’s not hard to see that there’s no scope for return on the cost of redesigning even part of the A110 purely for the Australian market, especially when most prospective customers likely already have one,” WhichCar explains, adding that Australia makes up less than 1% of Alpine’s global sales.
This doesn’t mean the Alpine brand will completely disappear from Australia shores once the A110 is discontinued. Of course, the Alpine F1 Team will keep coming Down Under for the Australian Grand Prix, and there’s a very good chance we’ll see an Australian driving for the team in the not-too-distant future: Oscar Piastri, the 2021 Formula 2 World Champion, who’s part of Renault’s driver academy.
RELATED: Upcoming Australian Talent Highlights Massive Problem With Formula 1
There’s also a next-generation A110 in the works, which will be produced in collaboration with Lotus, feature an all-electric drivetrain and will enter production in 2025. The new Renault 5 EV is also set to have a performance-oriented Alpine variant.
Still, it’s bizarre that a brand that has an F1 team would end up being Australia’s worst-selling car maker in recent memory.

However, Hoyt feels extremely conflicted throughout the day as some of Harris’ tactics to fight the war on drugs aren’t particularly ethical or, in some cases, legal.
This is one of the rare films where Washington plays a ‘bad’ guy and he really excels at it. Plus, Training Day is just a highly enjoyable police action-drama film.
Where To Watch: Rent or Buy on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video AU, Google Play, Microsoft Store, Youtube & Fetch.

Want to build a strong core? Have you found the ab exercises you’re currently doing just aren’t cutting it? Then you need to try the Fulcrum deadlift. A movement that will target your obliques and test your stability, be sure to add it to your workout program.
Anyone who knows anything about fitness will know about the deadlift, but have you ever heard of the Fulcrum deadlift? Also known as the offset deadlift, this deadlift variation sees weight placed on just one side of the barbell and will seriously destroy (and strengthen) your core.
RELATED: Forget Ab Crunches: This Is How You Build A Strong Core
As demonstrated in a TikTok video by Bill Maeda, owner of FitPro Hawaii, the Fulcrum deadlift looks incredibly simple, but in practice, it is anything but.
Explaining that he uses a shorter 5 foot, 13.6kg barbell instead of a more conventional 20kg barbell due to you needing to perform the Fulcrum deadlift at a lighter weight than what you’d expect, Bill says it is “one of the most powerful full-body obliques exercises you can do with just a little bit of weight.”
“This lift will feel heavy and awkward but it will strengthen some hard to reach places.”
So, how exactly does the Fulcrum deadlift work and how do you perform it?
Fortunately, Bill posted a separate video explaining just this, using commentary from Squat University. Stating that the “offset or Fulcrum deadlift is a unique exercise for its ability to make very lightweight extremely difficult.”
Squat University adds this deadlift variation is “similar to a single leg RDL (Romanian deadlift) with the weight held opposite the stance leg. The offset deadlift creates rotation inside, bending pull on the body that must be resisted for the trunk to remain upright.”
“The unbalanced nature of this lift challenges the body to have control over each and every link within itself. This is why you’ll see some powerlifters use this as an accessory movement to help enhance stability and control of the full-body, which helps to carry over to allowing higher loads on traditional deadlifts.”
How To Perform The Fulcrum Deadlift
Squat University adds in their video, “to perform, start with only a little weight on one end of the barbell as you move. Work to keep the barbell 100 percent parallel to the ground and from sliding right and left.”
And, while the Fulcrum deadlift is already a difficult movement, it gets a lot more difficult when you factor in how you need to breathe throughout the duration of the exercise. Bill Maeda is an expert on breathing techniques, so will likely find this deadlift variation relatively simple, but if you’re attempting it yourself, it further highlights the fact you really do need to start with a lightweight to help nail the technique.
As Squat University says in their video, “breathing is key during this lift because you’re not going to be holding your breath the entire time.”
To help understand how you should be breathing during the Fulcrum deadlift, Squat University provides a demonstration video, adding you should “practice the sandwich drill to ingrain proper lateral expansion with your breath.”
This involves placing your hands around the top of your hips, pushing in and breathing out.
“Brace your core and learn to keep this stiffness while you hinge, then be able to take breaths while you maintain the stiffness.”
Benefits of Fulcrum Deadlift
Bill Maeda isn’t the only man to speak of the benefits of offset loading, as Dr Joel Seedman of Advanced Human Performance has also spoken to great lengths about why you should be performing them. Explaining on his website, Dr Seedman says offset loading can be “performed with barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells, cables, bands, and even bodyweight. It simply involves loading more weight or placing more tension on one side of the body and less on the other.”
He adds, “Offset loading may be the single most effective strategy I’ve used not only for immediately exposing asymmetries and imbalances but also for eliminating them.” He further backs up Bill’s claims of the offset, or Fulcrum deadlift, being a great core burner,
“If you’re looking for a method that not only works the primary muscles for that movement but also crushes the core, look no further than offset training. In fact, you’re essentially resisting rotation and lateral flexion throughout each movement making it incredibly effective for hitting all of the spinal stabilizers and core musculature.”
As we’ve mentioned, if you choose to perform the offset deadlift yourself, start with a lightweight. It’s going to feel weird and potentially like you’re not really doing anything, but from a stability standpoint, you’ll be doing yourself plenty of favours.
