Dog days are over
This story was originally published on GizmodoAustralia’s first dog-sharing website has made having a part-time pooch possible with the launch of a free borrowing feature which connects the “desperate and dog-less” with dog owners to “dog share.”Those longing for puppy love can get their pet-fix by providing walks or dog sitting for time-poor dog owners in their local area. No money exchanges hands, simply the companionship of a new best friend.Dogshare was initially launched to connect like-minded and caring dog owners with one another to assist in the daily care of their respective pets, the site is now open to any pup aficionado. Time-poor dog owners now have an even larger network of free doggy day (or night) carers, looking to share the unconditional love (and responsibility) of their canine companion. The benefits of having a dog in your life go further than on demand furry snuggles, according to a 2015 Harvard Medical School report called “Get Healthy, Get a Dog”, which found that people who have dogs in their lives are healthier overall. Not only are they more physically active, but they’ve also been seen to have better cardiovascular health, lower blood pressure and cholesterol and lower levels of stress. But despite this, not everyone in Australia is in the position to own a dog, says Dogshare founder Jessica Thomas, a busy working mum to two young children and Duke, an exuberant German Shorthaired Pointer. “Lack of space, time constraints, and limited finances are enough to interfere with fulltime dog ownership but are easy obstacles to overcome in short term care,” she said.Thomas, who founded Dogshare exclusively for dog owners in 2015, chose to add the dog borrowing feature in response to countless emails she received from non-dog owners interested in Dogshare and willing to offer non-reciprocal care at no charge.“I found that there are so many people out there who genuinely love dogs and have experience caring for them, but are unable to commit to owning one for a variety of reasons,” said Jess. “And with so much love to give, I really wanted to offer these people the opportunity to care for a dog, at least some of the time.”According to Thomas, the site works much like online dating. Simple to use, borrowers create a profile about themselves and their prior dog experience and indicate the services they’re happy to provide. Borrowers can offer to cover dog walking, overnight or vacation stays, assist with dog appointments or simply check in on the dog while its owners are at work.“Borrower profiles are then made available to Dogshare’s dog-owning community who can connect with suitable ‘matches’ and arrange a local park meet-up,” explains Jess. “Everyone can test the chemistry and see whether the relationship has legs. Pardon the pun.”If it does, says Thomas, everybody wins. “The borrower gets access to a dog and all the benefits that go with it, while the owner has someone to love and care for their pet when they can’t.”Gizmodo explores the smart design, breakthrough science and awe-inspiring tech shaping your future.Follow Gizmodo on Facebook and Twitter.By Rae Johnston – Gizmodo

This Radical Redesign Could Be The Future Of Airports

Airport
Introducing the Endless Runway
Airports go to extensive, and sometimes eccentric, lengths to entice travellers. Take Singapore Changi’s butterfly garden. Or Incheon’s golf course. Or Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, which boasts the world’s first permanent airport library, with a collection of 1,200 books translated into 29 languages. But while the clever trappings are fun, they’re not necessarily what an airport needs. The planet’s air travel hubs are increasingly bogged down by passengers, and along with capacity challenges, also face physical constraints from wind during takeoffs and landings. Little can be done to improve the performance of airports as-is.Enter ‘The Endless Runway‘, a radical concept from Dutch scientist Henk Hesselink that proposes a round, 3.5 km banked runway that encircles the terminal building. The circular runway would take up just a third of the space of a conventional airport, and allow up to three planes to take off and land simultaneously. The project would solve one of the major limiting factors facing airports. A standard runway results in a dependency on wind direction and requires aircraft to use the same approach path. A circular runway, however, would allow takeoff and landing in any direction. Wind direction becomes irrelevant.Hesselink’s team at the Netherlands Aerospace Centre used flight simulators and computerised calculations to test the revolutionary design. Their research has found that not only do 360-degree runways mean more efficiency for airports and an enhanced experience for travellers, they also cut down on noise for residents living nearby by allowing flight paths to be more widely distributed. It’s a win-win-win.That is, if it ever happens. The project is exceedingly ambitious, and Hesselink told International Airport Review that it was designed to provide solutions beyond 2050. With luck, he added, the attention it’s receiving now will speed up the process… but we’re probably still looking at 20 more years of the straight status quo.

OMEGA Celebrates 60 Years Of Timing Excellence With A Trifecta
OMEGA Celebrates 60 Years Of Timing Excellence With A Trifecta

OMEGA stunned the Baselworld crowds this year with an unveiling of three iconic timepieces which are considered to be true classics in the world of watchmaking.

The Seamaster 300, the Railmaster and the Speedmaster all made their debut in the form of special 60th Anniversary editions at the watch convention in a limited release.

Each watch will be limited to just 3,557 pieces and presented together in a box based off the original 1957 packaging complete with a seahorse motif, a retro logo and beige corduroy lining.

Fans of different straps will also be pleased to see that each timepiece in the box comes with two spare straps; leather and NATO, as well as a handy tool to change them. The common design cues of the watches include the brushed and polished stainless steel case housing the black ‘tropical’ dial which makes for a striking contrast on any wrist.

The stainless steel bracelets themselves even receive a refresh with a retro-style OMEGA logo adorning the clasp.

Here’s a breakdown on each piece and their unique qualities.

The Speedmaster 60th Anniversary 38.6mm

Released as the “Broad Arrow”, this particular OMEGA piece is considered the very first Speedmaster and also happened to be the first chronograph wristwatch in the world bearing a tachymeter scale on the bezel instead of the dial – a move which would later be copied by watchmakers from around the globe.

The 60th anniversary Speedmaster features the company’s in-house 1861 calibre driving hours, minutes and seconds as well as three chronograph small seconds counters. Vintage indexes come finished with Super LumiNova for optimum visibility whilst the 38.6mm steel case allows for a 60 metre water resistance.

The Railmaster 60th Anniversary 38mm

As the name itself suggests, the 1957 Railmaster was originally designed to frequent area in which there were electrical fields. From the appearance alone it looks exactly the same as the original but intrinsically the antimagnetic properties have been brought up to date with a Master Chronometer 8806 movement resisting electrical fields of up to 15,000 gauss. And yes, it is COSC certified.

The steel case is set in 38mm whilst the dial is set in black with big numerals at the 12, 3, 6 and 9 o’clock marks and a vintage Railmaster logo just above the 6 o’clock numeral.

The Seamaster 300 60th Anniversary 39mm

A truly outstanding piece amongst the trie, the Seamaster 300 is based off the original CK2913 but receives an update in the form of a black aluminium bezel whilst retaining the famous Naïad sign on the crown – a symbol of exceptional water resistance back in 1957.

The movement in the 2017 timepiece is OMEGA’s Master Chronometer 8806 which is also COSC certified and can withstand electrical interferences of up to15,000 gauss. This movement sits inside a 39mm steel case and offers up to 300m of water resistance for serious divers.

Fans who can’t decide on just one piece can opt for OMEGA’s Trilogy box which comes limited to just 557 examples. This box includes all three timepieces presented in a specially engraved Swiss oak box alongside a leather watch roll with six spare straps (three leather/three NATO) and a wooden spring bar changing tool.

The watches will be available from May 2017. For more details visit OMEGA or our list of best watch boutiques in Melbourne and Sydney.

Get To Know Pantone's Color Trend Predictions For 2018
Get To Know Pantone's Color Trend Predictions For 2018

p5
Top row: Vedure, Playful, Discretion, TECH-nique. Bottom row: Far-Fetched, Resourceful, Intricacy, Intensity.
Though we’re only a few months into 2017, the folks at Pantone have already consulted the colour psychics to reveal their colour trend predictions for 2018.Pantone Color Institute Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman shared the predictions at the International Home & Housewares Show in Chicago this week. His forecast comes from months of studying fashion runways, the art scene, television, movies, architecture, retail, theatre, food, and consumer goods around the world.Shiny is in, according to Eiseman. “Metallics we know are classic,” she said, according to trade publication Home Accents Today. “But they have really moved over into neutrals.” She also noted an ongoing fascination with all things iridescent, pearlised, or translucent, which she said “the human eye can absolutely not avoid.”Eisemen’s colour trend predictions show a shift away from the pastels of recent years (like 2016’s Colours of the Year Serenity and Rose Quartz, or the omnipresent Millennial Pink) to bolder, brighter shades.“Intense colours seem to be a natural application of our intense lifestyles and thought processes these days,” she said. These trends are reflected in the 2018 Pantone View Home + Interiors palettes, which were also unveiled at the Housewares Show. The eight colour groupings, which you can see above, are:

Verdure

Vegetal colours like Celery and Foliage combine with berry-infused purples and an eggshell blue, in a palette Eiseman called “symbolic of health.”

Resourceful

Complementary colours on the colour wheel – oranges and blues – blend in a palette that is clever and “resourceful” in re-using and re-furbishing what consumers may already own. “It combines warm and cool tones that you just can’t avoid looking at it,” said Eiseman.

Playful

Speaking to our need for whimsy, the Playful palette is out-of-the ordinary and quirky. The colours are “bright-hearted more than light-hearted” with names to match (Minion Yellow, Lime Popsicle, Green Flash).

Discretion

Low-key and subtle, Discretion is the opposite of Playful. Nostalgic hues such as Elderberry, Burnished Lilac, and Hawthorne Rose combine with strengthening tones to offer newness to a subtle palette.

Far-fetched

This palette “reaches out and embraces many different cultures,” said Eiseman. It refreshingly combines three popular rosy tones with Iced Coffee and Ruby Wine, as well as a few earthy tones such as Cornsilk yellow.

Intricacy

This palette reflects the popularity of intricate designs. It features the “new neutrals” – aka metallics – with a florid Holly Berry Red and yellow Sulfur for an added layer of drama.

Intensity

Providing an eclectic mix of colours, Intensity conveys “a certain strength, power, depth and sophistication,” said Eiseman. Coolly composed shades of plum, blue, and blue-green quell the fires of orange Emberglow, Molten Lava, and Bossa Nova.

TECH-nique

Pantone’s nod to the proliferation of technology features hues “that seem to shine from within.” Colours include a vibrant blue, green, fuchsia, and purple, along with iridescent peacock tones in both turquoise and hot pink, offset by Brilliant White and Frosted Almond.Eiseman also predicted some of 2018’s design trends. She expects the 1970s trend to stay strong, with plenty of fringe on the way. She highlighted our fascination with letters and words as a design element, the use of triangles as a motif, and dimensional diamonds and intricacy (which she attributes to the popularity of 3-D printing). Wood treatments have also become “very unique and really artful,” she said.Share your thoughts: Which trend are you most excited for in 2018? Or are you happy to see anything that isn’t Greenery?

Today that model known as the Oyster Perpetual Sea-Dweller Ref. 126600 is receiving a larger 43mm steel case and the latest generation movement in the calibre 3235.

It may seem like a minor update but make no mistake the latest movement is one of Rolex’s finest achievements in watchmaking to date featuring 14 patents on its design alone.

On the aesthetic front the Sea-Dweller receives a Cyclops lens on the crystal at 3 o’clock to enhance the date reading whilst the black dial wears the familiar red ‘Sea-Dweller’ moniker in red – a nod to the very first model which appeared 50 years ago.

For diving purposes the dial is also filled with blue Chromalight lume to ensure visibility at depths of up to 1,220 metres.

The Rolex Sea-Dweller Ref. 126600 will retail for CHF 10,800.

McLaren Hints At The Future Successor Of The F1
McLaren Hints At The Future Successor Of The F1

McLaren’s Formula One program may have gone balls up for the past three years but on the production car front the British marque is still kicking some serious goals.Since announcing the brand new 720S at the Geneva Motor Show, McLaren have continued to hint at what’s coming up in the future for the brand – namely an iconic model named the F1, the 90s supercar credited for forging McLaren’s reputation into what it is today. Not much is known about the next generation McLaren F1 named BP23 except for a small teaser teaser and a promise of what will be their most powerful and aerodynamic production car ever built. That’s a big call. Of course it’s not a successor to the iconic F1 without the unorthodox three-seat layout with the driver in the middle. Those interested are already too late as all 106 limited edition BP23 examples have already been spoken for. The owners are expected to co-operate with McLaren Special Operations to customise their vehicle based on colour, trim materials and personalisation details. The BP23 is expected to arrive in 2019. Until then punters can settle for these other Formula One cars made for the road.

How To Get The Designer Bathroom Look Without Going Broke
How To Get The Designer Bathroom Look Without Going Broke

Bathroom renovations. Two words that strike fear in the hearts of anybody considering – let alone undertaking – them.Yet we still fantasise about that dream bathroom with a tub for two, rain shower, smart toilet, and maybe even a minibar. Believe it or not, you needn’t take out a loan, plunge yourself into debt or to pay the plumber in sexual favours to achieve an awesome bathroom renovation. Here’s a breakdown of how it’s done.

Setting A Budget

bathroom
Don’t need mountain views? Don’t budget for it
The first step to a successful renovation is to set a budget and divvy it up according to your needs and priorities. Don’t need mountain views? Don’t budget for it. If your vanity is ancient and your shower is leaking, these are the two areas you should invest the most cash in instead.A full bathroom renovation will generally cost at least $10,000. This figure can easily balloon if you have expensive taste and want all the bells and whistles. However, it is possible to achieve similar results on a budget as slight as $3000, or even cheaper if you are willing and able to complete some of the jobs yourself. Whatever you budget, it’s wise to allow an additional 10% for extras or errors. If you’re on a shoestring budget (under $1000), options are limited to cosmetic ones. Get creative with new fixtures, slap on a fresh coat of paint or ‘splurge’ on a statement pendent light.

Electrical Fees

lights
A chunk of your budget needs to be allocated to electricians fees
Unless you have the training or an electrician mate, a chunk of your budget needs to be allocated to electricians fees, which start at around $70 an hour. These guys can expertly install and rewire switches, lights, exhaust fans and underfloor heating.

Plumbing Fees

drain
If your bathroom renovation is simply cosmetic you won’t need a plumber
Plumbers charge similar fees to electricians, around the $70 per hour mark. If your bathroom renovation is simply cosmetic you won’t need a plumber, but their services will be required if you are installing a new toilet, shower, bath or vanity.

Tentative Tiling

tiling
Tiled walls are sexy, but they’re expensive
Tiles and bathrooms are a match made in design heaven. Tiled walls are sexy, but they’re expensive. Instead of tiling entire walls, adopt a more frugal approach with strategically placed feature tiling. Our favourite approach is to lay a thin horizontal strip of tiles along the wall. This way, you can save money while still creating a high-impact result.Note: Unless you can do the work yourself, a contractor (approx. $40 per square metre) will need to be called in. For tiled floors, your contractor will need to add waterproofing and sealing to the job. Experts suggest a budget of between $1500 and $3000 to have the floor done. This applies to a standard 8 square metre bathroom and includes the cost of tiles, labour and waterproofing (the standard sized tile measures 12×12-inches. Smaller or more intricate mosaic designs will be costlier).RELATED: 20 Masculine Bathroom & Stylish Bathrooms You’ll Want To Live InAnother money-saving idea is to reuse existing tiles. A good re-grouting will do the tiles a world of good and make them look like new.Black & white, charcoal or earthy coloured tiles work best in a masculine bathroom. If you can’t afford all that, try re-painting your existing tiles. This method gives the appearance of new tiles for a fraction of the cost (around $100 compared to hundreds or even thousands). Before painting, you’ll need to clean, sand and prime the tiles. Two coats will suffice and a gloss or matt clear finish will need to be applied once the paint had dried.

Tiling Alternatives

concrete
Concrete is becoming increasingly popular among industrial and minimalist enthusiasts
Most of us are under the impression that tiles are the only flooring option available in the bathroom. But concrete is becoming increasingly popular among industrial and minimalist enthusiasts. Whether you polish an existing concrete slab or pour and seal a new one, the outlay in minimal. In fact, materials should cost no more than $100.

Bathroom Paint

paint
Paint is the cheapest way to give the bathroom a facelift
Nothing refreshes a tired bathroom more effectively than a fresh coat of paint. As far as expenditure goes, it is the cheapest way to give the bathroom a facelift. Having said this, never pick the cheapest paint! Bathrooms are moist and steamy spaces and they demand specialised paint resistant to mould. The cost of painting will depend on the size of your bathroom. On average, $25 should get you a 1L tub of bathroom paint (don’t forget the primer and brushes). Dulux have an extensive and affordable range available online.

Fixture Finesse

fixutres
Focus on fixtures, faucets and knobs for an inexpensive makeover
The littlest things often create the largest impact. Focus on fixtures, faucets and knobs for an inexpensive makeover. Brass and copper fixtures look good in the modern bathroom, while matte black fixtures will always exude masculine elegance. You can spend as much or as little as you damn well please on fixtures. There are some swish options out there, but more affordable ones that look similar or even better can be found with a little perseverance. The towel rack is another easily replaceable fixture. For an industrial and masculine finish, ditch the traditional towel rack and install old plumbing pipes.

Grout Is Grouse

grout
Discoloured, dodgy grout work is easily fixed and cheap as chips
Underfoot and overlooked is bathroom grout and chalk. If your walls are tiled, the problem is likely creeping ever higher towards the ceiling and sabotaging your bathroom makeover. Discoloured, dodgy grout work is easily fixed and cheap as chips.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

vessel-bathtub
A new tub will be out of reach for those renovating on a tight budget
The bathtub doubles as a wash station and romance hotspot. A new tub will be out of reach for those renovating on a tight budget, so make the most of what you’ve got.If you have a porcelain, fibreglass, cast-iron or even an antique tub, pick up a DIY refinishing kit to get it looking spick and span. A fair amount of elbow grease is needed to complete this task, making for a great upper-body workout. The Rust-Oleum Tub & Tile Refinishing Kit is one of the best and will set you back $85.Save money by up-cycling old planks of wood or metal into rugged shelving for towels and other bathroom necessities. While we’re on the subject of savings, ‘Green’ fixtures like low-flow showerheads and faucets cost approximately the same as traditional fixtures but will save you thousands in the long run.

Vanities For The Vain

vanity
It’s possible to find one that suits any budget
New vanities can get super-fancy and stupidly expensive, but it’s possible to find one that suits any budget. As an example, an Estilo semi-recessed freestanding vanity from Bunnings sells for a measly $149. At the other end of the Bunnings spectrum is the $1,397 Cibo Caesar Floor Mounted double vanity.DIY-ers are also repurposing old dressing tables and chests of drawers with pretty cool results. Cut a hole in the top for your sink and away you go.

Light It Up

lighting
Lighting is crucial to a successful bathroom reno
Lighting is crucial to a successful bathroom reno, particularly if you live with a lady or grow hair like a beast and need to shave daily. A combination of built-in ceiling lights, task lighting and suave pendant lights will add mood and function to the space.Tip: Modernise your lighting with LED. Add strips along the sides of your mirror or on the floor surrounding the bath for maximum effect.

Tudor Teams Up With Breitling For Latest Black Bay Chronograph
Tudor Teams Up With Breitling For Latest Black Bay Chronograph

The stars have aligned at Baselworld this year with news of Tudor‘s latest Black Bay Chronograph Ref. 79350 coming in as a collaboration between fellow Swiss watchmaker, Breitling.

The news broke via Hodinkee who revealed that the new column-wheel chronograph caliber MT5813 housed inside the Black Bay Chronograph was developed with Breitling and based off the basic architecture of the its B01 chronograph movement. It may be a surprise to see such a partnership come to fruition in such an attractive piece but it’s also important to note that this was no overnight affair.

The Tudor/Breitling collaboration was set in motion a few years ago when Tudor showed an interest in creating a modern, robust, and reliable chronograph caliber that it could offer to customers at an affordable price point. This brought them to Breitling’s B01 movement which would eventually be modified with a Tudor oscillating weight alongside the watchmaker’s own finishing touches and silicon balance spring.

On the black watch face sits two chronograph counters with one being a 45-minute counter and the other a small seconds counter. A date window is found at the 6 o’clcok mark. The movement is housed within a 41mm steel case with a polished satin finish. Complementing the chronograph aesthetics beautifully is a fixed steel bezel with a black engraved tachymetric scale. A domed sapphire crystal sets this Tudor apart nicely from others in the 2017 collection.

On the practicality front the watch features 200m water resistance and a power reserve of 70 hours. The straps available include a rivet style steel bracelet, a brown leather strap or a denim style jacquard woven strap which is included in the box for either of the two.

The steel bracelet model will retail for CHF 4,800 whilst the leather strap model will retail for CHF 4,500. Expect to see the Tudor Black Bay Chronograph released mid-year.
