Dan Bilzerian Jumps Aboard The Internet’s Most Popular Fitness Trend

International playboy and entrepreneur Dan Bilzerian is someone who throws himself into pretty much anything. Previously revealing he only spends time “doing the things [he] wants to do”, we can certainly understand how he can be an attractive Instagram follow for many.Taking to Instagram yesterday, Dan shared a photo of himself in an ice bath overlooking the ocean. Bilzerian captioned the post, “If you have brain fog from smoking too much weed, an ice bath will clear your mind and give you a full reset.”He posted the photo on his Ignite International Instagram account. Ignite International claims to be the first premium global cannabis brand in the world.

While we’re not qualified to comment on the health benefits and drawbacks of the marijuana element (stay tuned for a professional’s opinion), ice baths are becoming an increasingly popular way to activate your senses and improve your mental fortitude, with many celebrities and athletes getting in on the trend.Gone are the days of this practice being limited to rugby teams pouring ice cubes into wheelie bins – now there is a range of fabulous (and quite expensive) gadgets to get your chill on.Despite not explicitly claiming to have smoked ‘Mary Jane’ before jumping in the above ice bath, Bilzerian has previously posted an image of himself smoking whilst in the gym, during a weights session, captioning it: “iron and soul.”

Cannabis can allow you to relax and put yourself in a zen state of mind, which Dan likely uses to his advantage to help him zone out of daily life and just focus on the task at hand (tough job, bathing in ice).Smoking any substance remains harmful to your lungs. Read more about the risks, drawbacks and benefits of cannabis here (essentially: it depends on your constitution, how you consume it, and how often, as well as your goals).Popular podcaster Joe Rogan has also recently had a crack at ice baths (see below).

Watch Joe Rogan hit the 20 minute mark for the first time in an ice bath…

Ice baths have been adopted by many around the world, with athletes in particular opting for some spine-tingling submersion in order to aid recovery. The ‘Iceman’ himself Wim Hof speaks regularly about the benefits of cold water, as it quite literally forces you to regulate your breathing, which can in turn help you to become more mindful and mentally aware, resulting in far healthier wellbeing.Athletes claim it helps their muscles recover too, and Kevin Hart is one man who champions them, creating an entire YouTube series dedicated to interviewing athletes and celebrities whilst submerged in icy cold water.Naturally, putting yourself into a bath of ice isn’t for the faint hearted, and you need to be mentally and physically prepared before you attempt it. It’s also wise to start off spending just short periods of time in the water, unlike Joe Rogan, who threw himself into a full 20 minutes of submersion and found himself freezing for hours once he got out.Exposing your body to such extreme cold temperatures brings with it the risk of “afterdrop” – a potentially deadly phenomenon, which occurs after exiting freezing cold water. Healthline does add that there isn’t necessarily any concrete evidence to support the idea that ice baths are any better with helping your muscles recover, compared to say, a low-intensity 10-minute ride on an exercise bike.Anecdotal evidence suggests it can work wonders, however, if you are already healthy enough to start doing it without major risks, and if you build up your tolerance slowly and under professional guidance.

Watch Wim Hof and Seaspiracy Director Ali Tabrizi discuss the benefits of exposing yourself to discomfort more often in the video below

As with any health-related fitness advice, consult a professional if you’re unsure about trying something new. Do everything in moderation and if you’re really nervous about trying something, ensure you have someone on hand to help you out should you get into any nasty situations.

‘Not Very Fast Food’: 2,000 Year Old Restaurant Reopens In Pompeii
‘Not Very Fast Food’: 2,000 Year Old Restaurant Reopens In Pompeii

We think of fast food as being a modern invention, but the reality is that restauranters have been serving quick, easy and cheap food for people on the go for thousands of years.

From the travelling ramen carts of shogun-era Japan to Aztec tamale vendors, fast food is almost as old as modern human history. Indeed, the development of fast food is, perhaps more than any other marker of civilisation, closely connected with the development of modern humanity.

One ancient society where fast food thrived was the Ancient Roman Empire. Fast food or street food was an absolute necessity for poor urban Ancient Romans, whose basic tenement homes did not have ovens or hearths, making cooking at home a challenge.

But despite the Roman Empire’s prominence, surprisingly little historical evidence remains around the sort of foods Ancient Romans ate, as well as the sort of eateries they frequented – which makes this discovery all the more valuable.

“An ancient Roman fast food counter that was unearthed in Pompeii last year will open to the public almost 2000 years after the catastrophic volcanic eruption that destroyed the city,” news.com.au relates.

An archeologist carefully unearthing the thermopolium’s counter in 2020. Image: Archeological Park of Pompeii

“The ‘thermopolium’, which is Latin for ‘hot-drink counter’ and similar to a modern-day takeaway shop, was discovered under tonnes of volcanic ash in the Pompeii archaeological park in December,”

“Before Pompeii was destroyed in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in the year 79, the counter was used to serve pork, fish, beef, snails and other traditional Roman dishes to diners.”

“Colourful frescoes on the well-preserved counter show the animals that would have been on offer, typically grilled or roasted, and traces of food in earthenware pots were also found at the site.”

It’s striking just how well-preserved these frescos are, with their colourful artwork not too far removed from what you might find hung up on the walls of a modern Italian restaurant. These frescos would have been essential for the thermopolium, as most of their clientele would likely have been illiterate – so they act as a sort of menu.

It’s also surprising that discoveries of this magnitude are still being uncovered in Pompeii, so many years after the eruption as well as decades after the first systematic scientific excavations of the buried city in the 1920s.

Those who are hoping that they’ll recreate the same Ancient Roman food that was once served there are sure to be disappointed… Although Ancient Roman food doesn’t hold a candle to modern Italian fare.

It would have been fairly basic without a lot of spices or ingredients commonly associated with Italian cuisine (vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes, capsicum and corn only appeared in Europe in the 16th century following the discovery of the New World, for example).

We’re also not so keen on snails – we’ll stick to our biscotti and espresso, thank you very much.

Jamie Foxx Rocks The World’s Most Lavish Cartier Watch
Jamie Foxx Rocks The World’s Most Lavish Cartier Watch

The man born Eric Marlon Bishop is one of many talents: actor, singer/songwriter, comedian, television presenter, record producer, entrepreneur… There are few celebrities as prolific or multi-talented as Jamie Foxx, who is easily one of celebrity culture’s most underrated tastemakers. In short, he’s a bit of a Renaissance man. He knows when to keep things cool and he knows how to be extravagant. And extravagant is the perfect word to describe his watch collection.Appropriately for such a cool dude, Foxx likes his watches icy – that is, diamond-encrusted. From his two-tone Rolex Datejust with pavé diamonds to his diamond-bezel Hublot Big Bang, the man has a taste for gemstones. But his favourite watch, the one he wears most frequently, is his absolute iciest: a rather unique Cartier Santos de Cartier Skeleton.Foxx took to Instagram yesterday to show off an outfit that we secretly think he coordinated with his watch… It’s just icy all around.

Images: @iamjamiefoxx / Luxury Watches USA
While many watch brands make skeletonised dials or movements, Cartier’s are widely recognised as some of the best. The Santos’ is the cream of the crop, and an example of truly inspired design: the ‘bones’ of the movement actually form 3, 6, 9 and 12 in Roman numerals, meaning you don’t completely sacrifice legibility. Not completely.Foxx’s Santos, a two-tone model with a steel case/bracelet and yellow gold bezel/rivets dials up the luxury even further with 25 carats of white diamonds. He’s owned the watch for a while, and it’s not clear whether the diamonds are factory-set or an aftermarket job. In any case, they’re done to a high standard. Similar iced-out Santos de Cartier Skeletons are worth around US$60,000 on Chrono24.RELATED: Justin Bieber’s Latest ‘Outrageous’ Rolex Flex Imparts Timeless Truth About Watch InvestingFoxx is set to reprise his role as Electro for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home. He’s also set to star in the upcoming sports comedy flick All-Star Weekend, which he also wrote and will direct and produce. Wonder if he’ll treat himself to another icy watch after those paychecks come in…

Could This Overlooked Australian Commodity Be About To Boom?
Could This Overlooked Australian Commodity Be About To Boom?

Silica sand can make for a world-class beach, but did you also know it makes your phone? In case you’ve been living under a rock, the ASX 200 on Tuesday finished trading at its highest levels ever.As has been the case for much of the last year, mining and technology stocks drove the jump. Some of the best-performing stocks were lithium producers Orocobre (+8.7pc) and Pilbara Minerals (+11pc) as well as technology stocks like Pointsbet (+9.9pc) and Afterpay (+3.2pc), as well as mining company Whitehaven Coal (+6pc).However, one of Australia’s best known and most successful small-cap investors – Tolga Kumova – reckons there is another investment opportunity out there beyond technology stocks and lithium (the two kinds of stocks that have been making a lot of headlines lately).Speaking on The BIP Show (a podcast about business, investing and policy) at the end of July, he said, in his opinion, silica sand is a commodity to keep an eye on.It should be noted this is not financial advice (neither from us, nor Kumova, nor the show) and that the conversation we are about to quote is general in nature. Kumova’s Twitter bio reads: “I am not a licenced financial advisor and what I say should not be considered financial advice.”That disclaimer out of the way, what is Kumova’s theory? He told The BIP Show: “The strongest thematic in Australia right now… is energy. Anything to do with electrification and the reduction in fossil fuel to create that energy is probably front and centre of every investor’s mind.”

“If you’re not paying attention to it you’re going to be left behind.”

Silica sand isn’t the only commodity in that space, of course. Kumova said when he is thinking about “investing in that space” – that space includes, “Lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite, manganese… uranium.”What we found most interesting though is the following.Kumova said: “The other one that for the last couple of years that I’ve been thinking about… is silica sand for the PV solar cell industry. That market I think is already exploding and is going to continue.”

The supply is getting constrained, he believes. He told The BIP Show: “Sand typically is mined from river beds from places like Indonesia and Malaysia… but now they’re restricting them. They’ve almost got cartels on this stuff now and Australia is in such a unique position.”

“There are quite a number of high-quality silica sand deposits [in] WA (and QLD by the way) and that is an opportunity I don’t think anyone is paying attention to.”

“But… when fund managers realise and once the offtake deals are done and the funding is in place… they are real low cap operations so you don’t really need a massive funding exercise on these things. It’s going to be front and centre and potentially printing a lot of capital.”

“The sand market I think is going to be a big export market for Australia going forward.”

He also said that the river they get silica sand from in China has “effectively been decimated” and has turned into a lake.

“[You’ve] got the supply being constrained and demand blowing up and you know what happens when you make a market and those two factors are involved.”

When asked by The BIP Show hosts to explain what silica sand is used for he said the primary application he is excited about is glass.

“When it has incredibly low iron content they use it for PV solar cells – the glass on the panel – and that market is growing.”

According to Small Caps, “Silica sand is a bulk commodity and one of the most mined commodities in the world.”“Its secret is the existent of angular particles,” Small Caps explains, which can interlock and “provide much greater strength for products like concrete, which require the basic silica supply.”Small Caps adds that glass making is silica sand’s most popular use, claiming that all types of glass require it.“It is also needed in foundries, kitchen taps, ceramics, cosmetics, paint and coatings, metallurgy, chemicals production, oil and gas recovery, water filtration and sand for construction,” (Small Caps).

“There is silica sand in your mobile phone and silicon chips. And in lithium-ion batteries, as well as photovoltaic cells.”

It has also been calculated, Small Caps states, “that 1km of highway requires 30,000t of silica sand.”With all the fuss lately in the media about companies like Tesla (see: Experts Reveal The Real Reason Tesla Stocks Spiked So Hard…& It’s Not Pretty) and more obvious EV related commodities like lithium, perhaps the somewhat forgotten commodity of silica sand is worth some food for thought?

This Award-Winning Grill Is A Must-Have For Every BBQ Loving American
This Award-Winning Grill Is A Must-Have For Every BBQ Loving American

This feature has been produced in partnership with Everdure USA.

From the West Coast to the East, from city to country, from Vermont to Virginia Beach – all Americans love grilling.

But not all grills are made equal. Cooking on a beautiful, high-heat charcoal grill is worlds away from your average, boring gas number. Most Americans agree that food cooked with charcoal tastes better than food cooked with gas, but gas has always been considered easier to cook with.

Until now, that is. Australian grill brand Everdure has partnered with world-famous chef and culinary pioneer Heston Blumenthal to create the Everdure 4K Charcoal BBQ: a seriously stylish and innovative piece of technology that makes charcoal cooking a breeze.

We teamed up with Jered Standing – Los Angeles-based whole animal butcher, self-described ‘burgerdaddy’ and owner/founder of Standing’s Butchery – to show just how easy cooking with charcoal is with Everdure’s magnificent 4K.

The beauty and the beast

Jered says grilling is more of an art than a science – and art’s truly the word when it comes to the Everdure 4K. The elegant grill is futuristic and beautiful to look at. Indeed, it’s the winner of numerous international design awards. Don’t be fooled by its compact dimensions, either: you can fit 25 small burgers or two whole Thanksgiving turkeys under the hood of the Everdure 4K. In short, it’s a full-blown outdoor kitchen that’s sure to get your neighbors talking.

But it’s not just pretty to look at. The Everdure 4K’s modern looks are matched only by its high-tech bona fides – it’s one of the most advanced grills on the market, whilst also being a breeze to use.

One of the big plus-sides to cooking with charcoal is that it produces far more heat than any other type of grilling. But that used to come with a big downside: it’s dirty and hard to control. Not so with the Everdure 4K.

Not only does it require a surprisingly small amount of wood to get going, but thanks to its unique airflow technology and easy-to-use touchscreen LED panel, it’s almost impossible to screw up. You don’t even need matches, lighter fluid or fire starters: just one button. Plus, it has a cool-to-the-touch exterior and auto-locking hood, making it totally safe for even the most forgetful grillmasters.

The Everdure 4K’s clever touches

Other elements that set the Everdure 4K aside from the rest of the BBQ pack include two easily adjustable airflow vents which make turning the heat up or down easy as pie; a side reloading hatch to top up charcoal and wood chips without the need to open the hood; the hood even has an internal light so if you’re grilling as the sun goes down or into the night, you’ll always be able to see what you’re doing. You don’t need to be a top-flight LA butcher like Jered to make amazing meals with this grill.

Another innovation the Everdure 4K brings to the table is connectivity. You can connect your iPhone or Android device to the grill via Bluetooth so you can wirelessly monitor your grill’s temperature, both under the hood and with temperature probes – perfect for low and slow cooking, however, you prefer your BBQ. You can even set temperature alerts, so you can spend more time socializing (which, if we’re being honest, is one of the best parts of cooking outdoors).

As Jered shows, the Everdure 4K is perfect for cooking a wide range of foods. From tomahawk steaks to fresh veggies, whole roasts or even making pizza – it’s a game-changer when it comes to grilling… There’s simply nothing else quite like it. We could sing the Everdure 4K’s praises all day, but the bottom line is this: it’s the future of charcoal cooking. Whether you’re a seasoned charcoal convert, gastronomic perfectionist or just someone who cares about eating well and enjoying a good old-fashioned grill, the Everdure 4K is the perfect outdoor oven for you.

There are so many intuitive perks in the Everdure 4K, that you’ll be finding new ways to cook for a very long time – from fall to spring and everything in between.

Three reasons to love the Everdure 4K

  • Clever design and high-tech touches make charcoal cooking a cinch
  • Highly versatile and perfect for cooking a wide range of food
  • Nice to look at as well as to use – it’s the perfect all-in-one outdoor kitchen

Tesla’s Little-Known ‘Race Cam’ Feature Could Help Win Over EV Skeptics
Tesla’s Little-Known ‘Race Cam’ Feature Could Help Win Over EV Skeptics

Elon Musk might be the modern equivalent of a snake oil salesman and there are still many issues yet to be ironed out when it comes to their vehicles, but even the most dyed-in-the-red, hippie-hating, climate change denier has to admit: he’s helped make EV’s cooler (if not yet cool). The world’s most successful electric vehicle brand and one of the most exciting businesses on the planet, the American marque’s cars remain the high watermark for EVs across the globe. Leaving aside their ecological or technological bona fides, one of the strongest cases for Tesla ownership is their performance credentials: Tesla’s Model S, 3, X and Y (yeah, there’s a reason Musk named them that) can not only hold their own but easily thrash the vast majority of performance cars on the market in each of their model segments.Indeed, the Tesla Model S Plaid recently beat out the Porsche 918 Spyder to nab the title of world’s fastest production car by acceleration time, the hotted-up sedan capable of rocketing from 0 to 60mph in 1.98 seconds. Now that’s fast. (By the way, Porsche has their own all-electric car now too, and it’s really cool. Check out our review of it here). If that wasn’t enough to convince you that EVs can be fun, one of the lesser-known features of every Tesla car might just win you over, as this Instagram video reveals. Brooks Weisblat, founder of DragTimes.com and a Model S Plaid owner, shows off how his Tesla, like all Teslas, boasts four built-in, always-on dash cams which record a number of different angles in front of and behind the car.Obviously, the primary function of these dash cams is safety and security. But as Weisblat reveals, they also serve as a sort of impromptu ‘race cam’ or ‘rolling photoshoot cam’ that you can use to record yourself embarrassing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles as you chop them at the lights, for example.

It certainly makes for some good content. Something EV owners of all stripes – not just Tesla owners – find is that many ICE owners try and challenge or harass them at traffic stops, in carparks or the like. It’s a bit of automotive tall poppy syndrome that’s normally a bit of good fun, but can often lead to nasty incidents.RELATED: Australia’s Most Beloved Car Engine Is Now An Endangered Species99% of the time, however, a Tesla can outperform just about any other vehicle on the road when push comes to shove – making the resulting dash cam footage deliciously satisfying. Let’s be honest: half the reason you buy a dash cam is in the hopes you capture something bizarre; something Straight Outta Russia. The novelty of being able to record yourself embarrassing cocky drivers has an obvious appeal, but as one commenter points out, having an always-on built-in dash cam can come with a significant downside:

“In the UK, the police can seize dash cam footage and use it as evidence against you. It’s a very good reason NOT to have a dash cam and definitely not a built-in one that can’t be switched off.”

The same is true in many other jurisdictions, including Australia. Of course, that only applies if you’re doing something illegal… But we’re not your parents.

Qantas Throws ‘Lifeline’ To Frequent Flyers Who Are Set To Lose Their Status
Qantas Throws ‘Lifeline’ To Frequent Flyers Who Are Set To Lose Their Status

If you’re all at sea over your Qantas frequent flyer status, don’t worry, the airline is (probably) throwing you a lifeline. If you make the ‘high flyer’ cut then your status, if it’s set to expire between now and June 2022, will be extended if you book an eligible flight prior to your membership year’s end.Qantas announced the status extension this morning, explaining it would be useful for top tier flyers who are facing a possible tier downgrade between now and June 2022.Qantas made the same offer in November last year for members facing a possible tier downgrade (such as Platinum to Gold, or Gold to Silver) in 2021. There are five membership levels in Qantas’ Frequent Flyer program, from Bronze up to Platinum One.Qantas is throwing this “retention lifeline” to flyers because international borders remain closed and because domestic lockdowns are currently making it difficult for members to earn the required Status Credits to retain their tier level. The extension will apply to Australian and New Zealand based tiered members (Silver and above) with a membership year ending in or before June 2022. They will be able to maintain their status for another year by booking an eligible flight prior to their membership year end, for travel until June 2022.Once the offer is activated Qantas Frequent Flyer will also roll over eligible Status Credits that members earned this year into their new membership year.Qantas Loyalty Chief Executive Officer Olivia Wirth said of the extension: “We know how important tier status is to our members and many of them have built it up over many years of flying with us.”“The offer to retain their current status by booking just one eligible flight is a great way for them to secure the additional 12 months of the benefits that come with being Silver or Gold, Platinum or Platinum One members, which will come into its own when everyone is back flying.”Ms Wirth added, “Our members have remained highly engaged with the program even in the midst of a global pandemic. We’ve seen bookings spike when restrictions have eased after previous outbreaks and we’re confident we’ll see the same when borders re-open this time. In fact, our data shows that 96% of Qantas customers intend to travel domestically in the next 12 months.”“Maintaining their tier is not just about status for our highly valued Frequent Flyers, it’s about the range of benefits they enjoy when they fly with us or partner airlines, including the most extensive network of domestic and global lounges, extra checked baggage allowances and priority airport privileges.”Here’s hoping next year yet another extension will prove unnecessary. In the meantime: at least we can all brush up on our aviation etiquette in anticipation of getting back in the skies (some people definitely need it).
