This is not a Maserati made to look like and SUV. This is the Maserati of SUVs. That’s how Glen Sealey, COO of Maserati Australia, explained it to us at today’s Australian launch of the marque’s first ever SUV, the Maserati Levante.

Sporting an adventurous ride height and the same sleek silhouette that Maserati vehicles are renowned for, the Levante will target consumers in the exclusive car buying segment – a group of discerning clientele who are after an ultra premium car which doesn’t compromise on space or exclusivity.

Early reports revealed that Maserati had the option of borrowing the chassis from its sister company at Jeep but opted to build their SUV from the ground up in order to stay true to the Maserati design language and driving dynamics. The results certainly speak for themselves with the big five metre SUV fitting up to five passengers whilst still looking exceptionally compact from the outside.

Powering the new car is a 3.0-litre V6 Turbo Diesel which finds its home across all three variants in the standard Levante, Levante Sport and Levante Luxury. Power is rated at 202kW and 600Nm of torque to give a 0-100km/h time of 6.9s before topping out at 230km/h. The fuel consumption for all of this fun? 7.2L/100km.

What differs between the three will be the level of luxury appointments and sports trim that can be personalised to suit just about any customer. That doesn’t mean the car will be a slouch though. Maserati have ensured that the spirit of the trident remains intact in the Levante, having given the SUV a perfect 50:50 weight distribution and an aluminium chassis for ideal handling. There’s also torque vectoring to get the most out of the car’s AWD system with a rear-wheel-drive bias when the front wheels are not required and spirited driving is.

As expected from any luxury car maker, customers will be spoilt for choice with an extensive range of interior fit out ranging from leather to woodgrain to Alcantara to carbon fibre. Ride comfort is paramount in a car like this and as such, Maserati have specced the vehicle with air spring suspension and electronically controlled shock absorbers featuring four different ride height levels to tackle most terrains.

The entertainment front will be headed by a new Human Machine Interface complete with an 8.4″ touchscreen and a host of other electronic safety measures within Maserati’s Advanced Driver Assistance Systems which includes Hill Holder, Hill Descent Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Rear & Surround View Cameras and Park Assist.

If you’ve ever seen the ‘People You May Know’ section on Facebook you’ll know that some suggestions are obvious: old high school mates and colleagues with mutual friends, but sometimes Facebook throws in a random or two with whom you share absolutely no common link.

It might not seem obvious, but it has recently been revealed that Facebook also suggests friends to you based on a shared GPS data point, meaning you have potentially been in the same location as the suggestion at some point.

Fusion first reported this happening when a parent who attended a gathering for suicidal teens said Facebook suggested he friend another parent who attended, despite sharing no information with each other.

A Facebook spokesperson has responded by saying, “We’re not using location data, such as device location and location information you add to your profile, to suggest people you may know. We may show you people based on mutual friends, work and education information, networks you are part of, contacts you’ve imported and other factors.”

For most, the thought of swimming alongside sharks is the stuff nightmares are made of. Photographer Michael Muller, on the other hand loves getting up close and personal with the terrifying creatures and has been documenting everything from sand tiger sharks in South Africa to great hammerheads in the Bahamas for a new photo series.

“Out of the darkness came that shark. It swam by me and I locked eyes with it,” Muller told TIME. “All of the misconceptions, the fear melted away. I saw an animal that was not the monster I was programmed to think it was.”

Muller’s photo series aims to change the perceptions perpetuated by movies like Jaws and increase awareness of the 100 million sharks killed every year. “We’re all in our urban areas and aren’t in touch with nature like we used to be,” Muller said. “I saw it firsthand and it makes me want to scream to people, tell them that we are losing the most beautiful part of our planet.”

In a move that’s sure to raise a few eyebrows, Apple has been granted a patent which will allow it to develop technology preventing iPhones from taking photos at concerts or sensitive locations.

The tech giant believes that this is a solution to audiences using cameras to snap endless photos and videos at concerts as opposed to enjoying the performance.

The patent states that the technology will work by disabling an iPhone camera via transmitted infrared signals in the surrounds. These signals are picked up by the smartphone where they are then converted into a command that blocks the camera’s functions.

The patent specifically states:

For example, an infrared emitter can be located in areas where picture or video capture is prohibited, and the emitter can generate infrared signals with encoded data that includes commands to disable the recording functions of devices. An electronic device can then receive the infrared signals, decode the data and temporarily disable the device’s recording function based on the command.

There are no doubt ramifications for this type of technology with the public already voicing concerns over the potential exploitation by authorities who want to block protests or evidence of abuse of power. On the legal front it could also help film studios fight piracy by stopping people from recording in movie theatres. Where exactly this technology can be implemented appears to be the underlying issue here.

No official word has been released from Apple yet but as a positive development, it can also be used for education. Tourists wondering around a landmark can pick up local infrared signals before it turns into details of the location they’re taking snaps of.
