What Happens If Elon Musk Sells 10% Of His Tesla Stock?
What Happens If Elon Musk Sells 10% Of His Tesla Stock?

Elon Musk isn’t known for letting opinions stick in his gullet. Instead, he seems to enjoy playing with stock prices and valuations (not to mention cryptocurrencies) like others enjoy peeling the label off a bottle of beer.

For many investors – many of whom were inspired by The Corona Effect (where boredom, disposable income, trading apps and lockdown led to many inexperienced investors getting in on the stock market with a bit more of an appetite for risk than the previous demographic) – Elon’s ability to spike (or tank) a stock or cryptocurrency has proved at best a lucrative enterprise and at worst a fun game.

But there’s a dark side: Musk’s Tweets could lose you a lot of money if you take them as gospel and put all your eggs in one basket (or if a company you have invested in happens to be on the wrong side of one of them). And if the Tesla founder’s comments on Bitcoin earlier this year weren’t warning enough, his latest spate of Tweets illustrates clearer than day why you should always have a diverse portfolio, and never make rash decisions based on groupthink or hype (as this writer learned the hard way).

To his credit, Musk has told people Tesla is overvalued before (though it is possible he is trying to build a reputation for honesty, while also subtly spruiking his company, as he also said he still thought it would be worth more in 5 years, despite being overvalued at the moment he made that comment). His latest Tweet, however, has some Tesla stockholders quaking in their boots.

His Tweet?

“Much is made lately of unrealized gains being a means of tax avoidance, so I propose selling 10% of my Tesla stock.” He then asked followers: “Do you support this?” At the time of writing, 57.9% of respondants (out of 3,519,252 votes) had answered: “Yes.” 42.1% had answered: “No.”

In another Tweet, Musk added: “I will abide by the results of this poll, whichever way it goes.”

“Note, I do not take a cash salary or bonus from anywhere. I only have stock, thus the only way for me to pay taxes personally is to sell stock.”

Jordon Hodges – an American actor, screenwriter and producer known for his role as Noah Daly in the 2014 drama film Sand Castles – commented on Musk’s Tweet, writing: “He has something else planned here. Might take us a minute to see it. Elon is a ninja. He’s never 2D.”

Tesla investor and host of YouTube channel Dave Lee on Investing, Dave Lee, commented: “Hey Elon, lots of sites out there that offer paid Twitter poll votes for cheap (just google ‘buy Twitter poll votes’). This poll can be easily manipulated by those with strong financial incentives.”

Another Twitter user accused Musk of being a coward: “It’s cowardly to deflect this decision to your followers. Take some responsibility for yourself. You have the ability to help so many people by paying your fair share of taxes, no debate is needed and certainly no polls. Just be a responsible citizen and pay your taxes.”

“This Twitter Poll decides the fate of $20,000,000,000+ of Tesla stock lol,” verified Twitter user Mr Beast wrote.

Musk’s Tweet also highlighted the distrust many wealthy (and, for that matter, poor) Americans have of how the government spends public money, with various Twitter users (including wealthy capitalist Peter Schiff) suggesting Musk would be better off helping the world privately.

Schiff wrote: “From a diversification and valuation perspective the sale makes a lot of sense. The fact that you’ll have to pay taxes on the proceeds however is not a net benefit to society. The public would be better served by you wisely investing that money rather than government wasting it.”

Many other Twitter users bemoaned the Tweet, fearing a stock price crash on Monday. Twitter user Cory Wijnhamer wrote: “You do realize that Tesla stock will now tank on Monday because of this, thus ending the awesome run the stock has made the last month. Posts like this is taking money out of the pockets of the people who have believed in you and your company the most.”

Other users said that they thought Musk had no choice but to sell. One wrote: “If you did your research. He has to sell his stocks in order to pay taxes on his stock options that expiring in the money. His tax bill is going to be massive and needs to do this by the end of December. He literally has no choice.”

Many are currently waiting anxiously to see what becomes of Tesla’s share price in the coming days (and we presume they will be even more anxious if Musk actually goes ahead and sells his stock). Many social media users fear that if Musk sells 10% of his Tesla stock it could sink the stock price.

Not everyone believes Musk selling his stock will be catastrophic. According to Reuters, “Tesla bull Gary Black, portfolio manager at The Future Fund, said that Musk’s potential stock sale would lead to ‘1-2 days of modest selling pressure,’ but said there would be solid institutional demand to snap up the shares at a discount.”

Reuters also reported: “As of June 30, Musk’s shareholding in Tesla came to about 170.5 million shares and selling 10% would amount to close to $21 billion based on Friday’s closing, according to Reuters calculations.”

James Whelan, Investment Manager at VFS Group in Sydney, told DMARGE that – though it remains to be seen if Musk will follow through – it’s “never a good look” when an owner of a company dumps a large amount of stock (generally speaking).

However, Whelan also told DMARGE: “Elon Musk and Telsa are still intertwined so much that you would not be able to separate the two – he can’t survive and Tesla can’t survive without him either. He knows that the market knows that it’s not going anywhere; it’s still the same stock, it’s still the same company making the same things so there’s no difference from that – it survives.”

“If it dips and it will – it should – it’s a buyable opportunity because nothing has changed in the story – nothing has changed in the lithium story, nothing has changed in the EV story, nothing has changed in the Elon Musk story… and now we look at the reasons for it.”

“He’s not getting out because he doesn’t like the stock – obviously he’s not doing that – he’s getting out of it because he has apparently a significant bill to pay for his options expiry.”

“As usual he’s – this is why he should not be head of a major listed company – it’s not manipulation it’s just not the way someone should act if you want to instil trust and confidence in the market – of which they now make up a pretty significant portion.”

At the time of writing, Tesla stock price is down 7.82% today but is still up compared to five days ago.

Justin Bieber’s New Yeezy ‘Moon Boots’ Might Be His Worst Shoes Ever
Justin Bieber’s New Yeezy ‘Moon Boots’ Might Be His Worst Shoes Ever

Justin Bieber loves ugly shoes. The uglier the better.

The Canadian pop star is well-known for his love affair with Crocs, but he’s also been spotted wearing other oddball kicks, such as these $870 designer ‘gumboots’ or these customised Nike Air Force 1s he wore to the Met Gala earlier this year.

Thanks to his friendship with rapper and sneaker god Kanye West, he also regularly gets access to the newest Yeezys, often receiving pre-release or prototype pairs of the usually quite outlandish shoes. Case in point: Bieber was spotted going out for brunch with his wife Hailey wearing a pair of new Yeezy NSTLD Boots, which only released yesterday.

Bieber’s worn some weird creps in his time but these puffy moon boot-looking things might just be the worst things he’s ever rocked.

Image: Backgrid

First previewed during the Yeezy Season 8 runway show in March 2020, these chunky boots have debuted in a khaki colourway and are constructed from a water-resistant, insulated canvas – like a coat for your feet. The sole and sidewall ‘cage’ of the boots feature similar design cues to the controversial Yeezy Foam RNNR clogs which hit the market last year.

RELATED: Justin Bieber Spotted Wearing The Only Shoes Worse Than Crocs

We reckon they look pretty hideous but they’ve already sold out online – such is Kanye West’s Midas touch – so what do we know? Originally retailing for US$350, there are already pairs going for as much as US$564 on resale sites like GOAT.

Knowing how hyped fashion works, we wager it won’t take long for these to be a regular sight among the Aspen après ski set (but maybe not among Dubai influencers). Wonder what Bieber’s winter holiday plans are…

Speaking of luxe accessories, check out Justin Bieber’s watch collection below.

I Bleached My Hair Like Lionel Messi. It Was A Total Disaster
I Bleached My Hair Like Lionel Messi. It Was A Total Disaster

Some people are up in arms about the “face of masculinity” (and UNICEF ambassador) David Beckham promoting the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and Eminem using violent language in pretty much every song ever. But what’s far more concerning is the impact these guys are having on male grooming culture.

Image via Twitter

Eminem might have started it in the late 90s’/early oughts, but David Beckham (and a bunch of other male celebrities and sportspeople) have unfortunately given the slim shady cut a modern update in 2021.

That’s right: it’s officially a look society will never shake.

A recent Beckham haircut, and the similar look he rocked during his Real Madrid days. Images: @davidbeckham / Getty

On that note: I recently realised split ends and chemically enhanced shampoos were not exclusively for women, and said “screw you” to the stereotype that anyone who dyes their hair is “going through something” (while simultaneously proving that very rude and narrow-minded stereotype correct).

Inspired by old Youtube clips of Lionel Messi (who also dyed his hair back in 2016, allegedly, to start from zero) and Brazilian professional surfer Italo Ferreira (who probably just did it for fun), I peroxided the heck out of my hair.

Watch the video below to see a full timelapse of my journey…

Needless to say, disaster ensued.

My first mistake? I opted for a cheap supermarket pack rather than going the professional route, and after waiting the requisite 38 minutes with the goo on my head, found my hair a shade of strawberry.

To make things worse, I missed patches around my ears and neck.

I then realised all the hairdressers in my area (I live in Sydney) were booked out. Some for months. When I walked into one and asked for an appointment the lady burst out laughing – even if she was kind enough to enquire: “What for?” (at the same time as eying off my rogue rouge locks).

RELATED: I Wore Every F*ckboi’s Favourite Footwear For A Week & It Changed My Life

I even sent pleading emails (featured in the video above) with photographic evidence of the disaster, in the hope of scoring a pity appointment.

No dice.

With a return to the office (and a big work lunch) coming up, time was ticking and I was getting no closer to a solution. I tried everything from lemon juice to spending a cancerous amount of time in the sun to get my hair to lighten.

Again: no dice.

I had almost given up hope when a housemate’s hairdresser had an opening. I took it with relief. I then went through the three other bookings I had made as backups (later in the month) and cancelled them.

The ordeal wasn’t over though – in a classic display of indecisiveness, when I got to the salon I couldn’t decide if I wanted to go full Ferreira or a more low key Scandinavian blonde.

I ended up going Scandinavian blonde, regretting it, and then freaking out at the grey/blue tones. Fortunately, they went away after a couple of days but still: heart attack in a bottle.

Moral of the story? If you’re going to bleach your hair (and don’t want to damage your scalp) do it professionally the first time, rather than getting it wrong yourself, and then having to chuck the chemicals on again.

Or better yet: stick to manicuring your fingernails

Scouting around social media (and speaking to Australian barbers) DMARGE has discerned that unfortunately, I’m not the only one to go ‘full slim shady’ 20 years after the look was cool. It has also become evident that I’m not the only one to mess it up. Even celebrities like (as mentioned) David Beckham and Phil Foden (and modern Spanish rappers) are getting in on the action. And they call themselves role models!

If you’re still considering it though, you’re probably brave enough to make it work. Just remember to keep a spare $300 in your pocket for another hair appointment to fix it up should it all go wrong.

Fitness Trainer’s Brutal Workout Will Give You ‘Boulder Shoulders’ In No Time
Fitness Trainer’s Brutal Workout Will Give You ‘Boulder Shoulders’ In No Time

Just when you thought you had the perfect weekly workout routine nailed down, new and inventive exercises come along that offer plenty of reason to either be added to that routine or to replace an exercise you’ve been performing for some time.

In this instance, we’re talking about the shoulders – an incredibly important muscle group, since the shoulders are responsible for allowing an array of upper body movements. If you can effectively build up all three sections of your shoulder muscles (front, middle and back), you’ll appear broader and really start to fill out your t-shirts and shirts.

The latest shoulder workout we believe you should definitely be trying comes from 49-year-old fitness trainer Paul Sklar. Paul regularly posts videos of himself working out, often making use of routines, tricks and hacks he’s developed, all with the common goal of helping you whack on those gains.

Check out fitness trainer Paul Sklar’s shoulder workout series in the video below.

What he calls his “favourite shoulder and trap series of all time”, Paul’s rather brutal shoulder workout requires the use of a barbell with some weight added on, and two exercises performed back to back. These are a clean and an overhead press.

A clean refers to the clean lift in Olympic weightlifting. While an Olympic powerlifting coach should be the only person to teach how to perform it effectively, this is more the case when you’re looking to lift some serious weight. In the case of Paul’s shoulder workout, keeping the bar relatively light, should mean you can follow some simple instructions.

Starting with the barbell hanging in front of your thighs, you then want to bend your knees slightly and push up, using the force generated to help you lift the bar up to your shoulders and collar bone. It’s often suggested the clean lift is a pull movement since it’s believed it’s your shoulders and traps that pull the bar upwards. However, much of the movement relies on the force you generate through your hips and legs, making it more of a push movement.

With the barbell at your shoulders, you now want to perform an overhead press. This requires you to remain standing tall and lift the barbell over your head, using your shoulders and traps.

Paul says that during the overhead press, “you want to make sure you keep your glutes and your core tight. Also make sure your elbows remain underneath your wrists to increase power transfer.”

His routine requires you to perform one clean lift, followed by one overhead press. Then, another clean lift with two overhead presses. The single clean remains constant throughout the movement, while the overhead press increases by one rep, up to a maximum of five reps.

Paul adds: “If you get it right, you should barely be able to move the barbell at the end of the series.” If you find you are struggling as you increase the number of overhead press reps, then you can incorporate the push press, which sees you bending your knees and pushing up during the overhead press to help with momentum.

Again, if you’re attempting this shoulder workout series for the first time, make sure to keep the weight to a minimum. Your muscles will inevitably become fatigued as you progress through the reps, and if you attempt to press the weight over your head and it’s too heavy, you run the risk of sustaining an injury.

“Pay close attention to form and watch the gains happen.”

Jeremy Clarkson Takes Aim At Lewis Hamilton With ‘Anti-Woke’ Rant
Jeremy Clarkson Takes Aim At Lewis Hamilton With ‘Anti-Woke’ Rant

Jeremy Clarkson has never been much for political correctness.

The curmudgeonly and conservative ex-Top Gear host, who’s made a career out of contrarianism and inflammatory comments, has taken aim once again at Sir Lewis Hamilton, the current and seven-time Formula One World Champion, for being too ‘woke’ and bringing politics into F1.

“Every race weekend, Lewis Hamilton gets out of his car and thanks the crowd – presumably hoping we at home can’t hear them booing,” he starts his screed in The Sun.

“It happens everywhere he goes, whether he wins or loses. People love Max Verstappen but they’ve taken a noisy dislike to Lewis. The problem is that Lewis has changed.”

“When he first came on to the scene he was bright and talented and normal – and everyone loved him. But then he decided to go woke and right-on and more politically correct than a student union AGM.”

“After the murder of George Floyd, he had Mercedes paint the cars black, he talks about how he’s now green because he sold his jet and has urged everyone to be vegetarian.”

“All this might work well on social media but in the real world, where people live, it doesn’t work at all… instead, we all just want to throw something at him.”

While Hamilton and Clarkson used to be on good terms, the latter has done little to hide his growing animosity against the F1 champ. From his driving style to his fashion to his politics, Clarkson has repeatedly attacked Hamilton over the years.

But there might be a kernel of truth to Clarkson’s criticism in this instance.

F1 has long been criticised for its questionable approach to ethics. The race schedule has expanded in recent years to include races in countries that have terrible human rights records, such as China, Qatar, Russia and Saudi Arabia.

RELATED: Formula One’s New Saudi Arabia Race Has Fans Fuming

At the same time, largely at Hamilton’s behest, F1 has taken a prominent stance on progressive issues, promoting the Black Lives Matter movement, LGBT+ visibility and talking up its environmental credentials. It does smack a little bit of hypocrisy for F1 and its biggest star to be talking the talk but not walking the walk when it comes to real progressive change.

It’s an issue that fellow F1 driver and former World Champion Sebastian Vettel has also commented on in recent days, sharing his concerns with The New York Times that “there’s a lot of countries where we go to and a lot of money, in a way, that we receive that maybe it’s not very pure.”

“It’s wrong we go to certain places… but obviously, financially, I can see there’s a huge incentive for Formula 1 as a business to go there.”

Sebastian Vettel

Vettel continued: “Where does it leave the mechanics, the engineers, the drivers? Where does it leave the people employed by a team to do a job that they willingly do, and it’s not their choice or their decision where to practice that job? I think it’s a difficult one… I think we need to start facing more the consequences of our actions and take on that responsibility.”

Clarkson’s criticism of Hamilton comes at a time when the driver’s star power and presence outside of the sport has never been greater – while also facing what seems like his first credible title threat in a very long time in the young Max Verstappen.

The contrast between Verstappen and Hamilton is hard to ignore. Hamilton is a globally recognised superstar; a charismatic cultural icon who goes to fashion shows and hobnobs with fellow celebs. Verstappen, on the other hand, is a brusque and serious operator who’s all about racing. Clarkson, no doubt, likes that about Max.

It’s also hard to ignore the feeling that at least part of Clarkson’s animosity towards Hamilton has an ugly classist/racist element to it… Especially compared to his championing of Verstappen, the son of a former F1 driver.

Leaving aside the debate around F1 or Hamilton’s ethics or progressive bona fides, the fact remains that Max and Lewis are giving fans one of the most exciting title fights in recent memory, which Clarkson should ultimately be supportive of.

Hamilton’s achievements both on and off the track speak for themselves, but some of the love for Verstappen undoubtedly comes from a feeling that Hamilton’s been on top for too long. It does get boring when the same dude just wins everything all the time…

The 2021 Formula One World Championship has only five races to go, with Verstappen currently in the lead with 287.5 points to Hamilton’s 275.5. Next up is the Mexico City Grand Prix, which kicks off a triple-header with the São Paulo Grand Prix and Qatar Grand Prix on subsequent weekends.

Ben Simmons’ Approach To Mental Health Sparks Controversial Debate In America
Ben Simmons’ Approach To Mental Health Sparks Controversial Debate In America

One positive to come from the pandemic was the amount of attention given to mental health – and how important it really is. It also once again brought up the fact that men, in general, tend to be less inclined to seek help from others, instead choosing to adopt a more stoic approach and to be ‘manly’ (and how we really need to change that culture).

RELATED: Psychologist Explains ‘Viking’ Mentality We Shouldn’t Be So Quick To Dismiss

But now that more and more conversations are being had, and charities dedicated to men’s mental health are popping up all the time, it’s become ever more accepted that men suffer from internal battles just as much as women. We’ve actually seen some really positive steps of late, with a lot of positive actions being taken in terms of awareness (and real change) both from individuals and companies.

RELATED: ‘You’re Too Smart For This’: Comedian’s Mental Health ‘Clutch’ Message

Which is why, arguably, the latest developments around Australian basketball star Ben Simmons recently made such a splash in America.

The Australian NBA star, who currently plays for the Philadelphia 76ers as point guard, has been going through a tumultuous time of late, having missed the entire pre-season, along with several practice sessions, asking for a transfer request (despite having four years left on his contract) and has even been fined for missing games, practices and meetings.

And now, the New York Post claims Simmons has told his team he is not “prepared mentally” to play. However, the publication adds the 76ers have offered him assistance – and put a halt on the fines issued to him – but are “growing frustrated with Simmons’ refusal to accept assistance from the team to aid in his mental health.”

RELATED: The Uncomfortable Truth About Sports’ Ongoing Mental Health Debate

He is said to have previously worked with “mental health professional provided by the league,” but “has not provided information about those meetings to the Sixers.”

Fox Sports adds Simmons is idolising a move to the Golden State Warriors, but several obstacles, such as how much they’d have to pay him, and the fact he may end up replacing Draymond Green (something the team isn’t prepared to do), lie in the way.

News.com.au further cites Shams Charnia of The Athletic as saying, “There’s no timetable on Simmons’ return to the floor.”

The news has sparked a delicate debate on Twitter, with some accusing Simmons of cashing in on the mental health movement of late (and exploiting it as a smokescreen), and others coming to his defence saying you can’t possibly assume to know his intentions or where his head is at.

One Twitter user wrote: “Ben Simmons isn’t going to see your commentary on his mental health but your friends on here that are struggling in silence are going to. This is one of those times if you don’t have something nice to say, you shouldn’t say anything at all.”

Another said: “I hope Ben Simmons mental health is good. I couldn’t imagine living while getting slandered online 24/7 it’s actually sad.”

While it’s positive news that the NBA star has reportedly already received help, and while it could well be Simmons simply would rather seek help on his own terms rather than through the 76ers, the whole saga proves what a loaded topic mental health still is (see: The Uncomfortable Truth About Sport’s Ongoing Mental Health Debate).

We’re not ones to judge anyone – let alone Simmons – having never been in his shoes.

Watch ‘Liver King’ Eat 50 Raw Eggs In Under 3 Minutes
Watch ‘Liver King’ Eat 50 Raw Eggs In Under 3 Minutes

Just how much are you prepared to put your body through in your search for muscular gains? Anyone who wants to pile on the muscle should know they need to make sure their diet is in a calorie surplus (i.e. you’re consuming more calories than you burn through exercise).

Of course, ensuring you consume the ‘right’ foods can make this an easier task than you might think. Foods that are naturally high in protein, carbohydrates and healthy fats can soon rack up the calories you need, which includes eggs.

RELATED: ‘I Ate Like Chris Hemsworth For 4 Months. It Nearly Broke Me’

You may, however, have your own opinions as to how many eggs you should consume in a week. But one man has clearly said “up yours” to such claims: the Liver King.

Real name Brian Johnson, the Liver King is an absolute unit of a man who lives his life in the same way our ancestors did (or how he imagines they did). This means hunting and consuming various animal meats, including testicles, and eating them raw; regular exposure to natural sunlight; and walking barefoot to reconnect with the earth.

Lovely.

While his recent testicle-eating exploits may have been too much to stomach for some, his latest meal of choice should be a lot less vomit-inducing, in so much as he’s eating a food many of us eat on a regular basis: eggs. Although, Brian decides to consume 50 raw eggs in just two and a half minutes, and challenges anyone else who watches the video to try and shot at least one raw egg, and post their efforts to their social accounts.

His challenge has received numerous responses from followers, all showing themselves chugging several raw eggs.

Eggs are an incredible food source and, according to WebMD, a single egg contains around 7-grams of high-quality protein, 5-grams of fat, 1.6-grams of saturated fat and a host of other essentials vitamins and minerals.

For a time, they were outlawed by many, as it was believed they contained incredibly high amounts of cholesterol. In fact, Healthline adds a medium-sized egg contains around 186mg of cholesterol, “which is 62% of the recommended daily intake.” Bear in mind, this refers to the whole egg, yolk included. The white of the egg contains mostly protein, with a low amount of cholesterol.

You may think, then, that Liver King’s 50 shots of raw eggs will be a one-way ticket to a heart attack. But that might not actually be the case.

As Healthline states, “cholesterol plays a very important function in your body. It’s a structural molecule that is essential to every cell membrane. It is also used to make steroid hormones like testosterone, oestrogen and cortisol.”

What people may not have initially known, is that your body is clever enough to regulate the levels of cholesterol, should you consume high amounts through your diet, “when you eat a lot of cholesterol-rich foods, your liver starts producing less to keep levels from becoming excessively high,” Healthline relates.

Where you need to be careful with your cholesterol intake is if your blood levels are raised, as a “high intake [of cholesterol-rich foods] may cause a moderate increase in blood cholesterol level.”

WebMD adds, “When scientists learned that high blood cholesterol was associated with heart disease, foods high in cholesterol logically became suspect. But after 25 years of study, it has become evident that cholesterol in food is not the culprit – saturated fat has a much bigger effect on blood cholesterol.”

So, Liver King’s 50 egg brunch may not be so bad after all.

It’s also worth noting that his eggs are pastured eggs, and the type of egg you consume can have various health benefits or side effects. According to Delishably, pastured eggs are far superior, they are “richer in colour and flavour, with a deep orange yolk. They have more nutrients that conventional eggs.”

This is because pastured eggs are “eggs laid by chickens that are raised on green pasture, with access to sun, bugs, space and fresh air. They eat a natural omnivorous diet full of bugs.”

You’ll no doubt have seen the various other types in the supermarket, such as cage-free and free range, but these can be deceptive terms to encourage you to buy. What they actually mean is that the chickens won’t be kept in cages, but might be crowded into hen houses without access to sunlight, or they simply have ‘access’ to outdoor areas, but aren’t necessarily left outside the whole time.

RELATED: Joe Rogan Reveals The Problem With Most American Free Range Eggs

Delishably adds you will get a far greater nutritional content from pastured eggs, “or you could eat more conventional eggs to reap the same amount of nutrition, but then you are adding more calories to your diet.” Of course, if calories is what you’re chasing, this might not matter to you, but you may want to think about only including two yolks and four egg whites, for example, for your breakfast of eggs on toast.

Of course, none of this necessarily makes the video of the Liver King stomaching 50 eggs in one hit any easier to watch. But we’d still take it over a set of balls. Are you prepared to take the challenge?

I Switched From Coffee To ‘Magic’ Byron Bay Green Powder For A Week
I Switched From Coffee To ‘Magic’ Byron Bay Green Powder For A Week

Nothing stirs your brain into gear like coffee. A key component of the morning rituals of millions around the world, we often claim we simply can’t function until we’ve had our morning hit. While it is certainly true that caffeine has a stimulative effect on the brain – Healthline says it stimulates our entire central nervous system – placing too much reliance on a cup of Joe and drinking too much of it in a single day can lead to various health problems.

I’m someone who has one, often two, large flat whites each day, made with oat milk, the greatest milk of them all of course. However, I would say my coffee habit has become more habitual than essential. I like the idea of heading to my local coffee shop, catching up with the staff who know me as a regular, and then taking a walk on the beach, or completing Byron Bay’s famous lighthouse walk.

While I don’t necessarily feel like I benefit from an obvious effect of this coffee – it’s true that your body can develop a tolerance to caffeine if you consume it on a regular basis – I have noticed on a couple of occasions that I’ve felt a spike in energy after drinking a single espresso, before heading to the gym.

Despite living in Byron Bay for the best part of 2021 and throwing myself into new experiences and a more relaxed way of living, switching up my coffee routine wasn’t something that I’d even considered. So, when a friend claimed he drank a magical powdered blend of various plants and other wild ingredients every morning, and felt similar or even greater effects than what you could get from coffee, my interest was certainly piqued.

Besides, I’d already tried Joe Rogan’s brain-boosting nootropics (to limited effect, I might add), so what harm could an all natural blend do to my body? In all honesty, I don’t know why it took me so long to ditch coffee.

Developed by Byron Inspired, the brainchild of Ryan Hollingsworth and his partner Jess, the Truth Blend as it is called, is a vegan-friendly powder comprising “a completely unique combination of certified organic & wild crafted Australian native, and exotic superfoods, synergistically combined to create ultimate efficacy through optimum assimilation.”

Ryan has been experimenting with different ingredients and different quantities since he was 18, having already developed a love for natural ingredients and their positive effects on the human body from a younger age.

He has gone to great lengths to find the very best ingredients for Truth Blend, ranging from the outskirts of Johannesburg, South Africa, through to our very own Kakadu in the Northern Territory in Australia.

These ingredients include organic baobab, Australian lemon myrtle, Kakadu plum, broccoli sprouts, chlorella, brahmi, nigella sativa, ashwagandha, turmeric and matcha, to name a few. There are 33 ingredients that make up the Truth Blend, all meticulously measured out to provide the optimum combination for your body. So far, so Byron Bay.

Watch me take my first sip of the ‘magic’ blend in the video below.

Ultimately, Ryan and Jess are all about helping you to look after your gut, because good gut health can have myriad benefits for our “immune system, mood, mental health, autoimmune diseases, endocrine disorders, skin conditions and cancer,” according to Healthline.

But, what effects did I notice after I substituted my routine morning coffee for a serving of the Truth Blend? And is it any better than the products you can pick up for half the price in your local supermarket? Here’s what I discovered.

Don’t Expect It To Taste Amazing

The only slight downside to the Truth Blend is in the taste. But, to be fair to it, I’d say anyone would be hard-pressed to make a green powder that didn’t contain any artificial ingredients that tastes good. Some friends of mine who are already well versed in the art of chugging superfood juices and powders actually thought the Truth didn’t taste bad at all, and that “you can definitely get worse.”

But, it was new to me. I’m used to post-workout smoothies using flavoured protein powders, or just regular water, on top of my usual coffee. While my face in the video may appear pleased as pie, it cuts off before the slight grimace occurred.

I Genuinely Felt A Lift

One of the main reasons to drink the Truth blend is to give your body a boost of energy. However, it works slightly differently from caffeine in that the energy boost is delivered over a longer period of time, as opposed to a sharp hit.

I never necessarily felt ‘down’ when I woke each morning and concocted myself a serving, but there were days I felt decidedly more drowsy than others. But, just a few hours after drinking Truth, I felt noticeably happier, more upbeat and more willing to sit in front of my desk for work. In fact, I’d say the effects were far more noticeable than what I feel after my morning coffee, and there was no bloated feeling from the sheer amount of milk (even if it was oat).

I Didn’t Miss Coffee

This was the biggest surprise to me. The whole point of this experiment was to ditch coffee entirely and solely rely on Truth for my daily dose of energy. And, because of the effects mentioned above, I didn’t even find myself craving a coffee, or getting into the car to drive to my local cafe like some sort of muscle memory.

What also made it surprising, was that I’ve been drinking a morning coffee pretty much like clockwork for the past 3 and a half years. Not only then, was I able to pretty easily interrupt this routine, but I was also surprised to not feel any caffeine withdrawal symptoms.

I’ve yet to try a week or two without coffee and without substituting it for something else, but my colleague James has conducted such an experiment and found that by the end of his week of abstinence, he was severely lacking energy and symptoms of anxiety began to creep in.

I Trust That It’s Good For Me

This isn’t like some sponsored influencer posts you see on Instagram, where a company sends their product in the hope of raising brand awareness and exploiting the brainwashed population. I reached out to Ryan myself and asked if he’d be willing to let me try a sample of the Truth blend.

I even sat down with him to chat in greater depth about why the product was made in the first place, how he went through a rigorous trial and error process to find the perfect blend and what sort of effects the various ingredients have.

Ryan and Jess certainly know their stuff, and they’re completely transparent with regards to what you get with each serving of Truth. In fact, it’s why they called it Truth in the first place, because that’s exactly what you get.

It’s fair to say I’m not going to notice significant health benefits after drinking it for just a week, but the couple claim if I were to continue drinking it, I would likely find myself falling ill far less often (if at all) and that my body will be working at an optimum level.

It’s All Part Of The Byron Bay Transition

No sooner had I moved to Byron Bay earlier in the year, I found myself dressed in linen. While it’s certainly true that everybody wishes to be seen at a cafe working from their laptops on their own mindful or activewear business (it seems 5G is acceptable in that case), I feel like switching to a powder such as Truth gives me extra credit in being considered a ‘local’ (in the making).

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Reignites The Great Loafer Debate
Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Reignites The Great Loafer Debate

To say that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is impressive is an understatement almost as huge as his delts.

Not only is he one of the fittest dudes on the planet and an incredibly talented actor, but he’s also incredibly nice. Oh, and despite being built like a brick outhouse, he also manages to be one of Hollywood’s best-dressed men, too.

But even someone as perfect as The Rock sometimes makes mistakes. he’s human, after all. In this instance, it’s a sartorial mistake that many men are guilty of – wearing loafers without socks.

For his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! earlier this week, The Rock chose a rather autumnal outfit consisting of a suede burgundy bomber jacket, pink turtleneck and red trousers. A bloody good look, we’d have to say (pun intended) – but one that was undermined by rocking loafers sans socks. Was he trying to show off how buff his ankles are or something?

When it comes to wearing loafers without socks, the jury’s divided. Conventional wisdom would say that you should always wear socks with your loafers as not only is it a style faux pas, but it’s also unhygienic; a sure-fire way to get sweaty and foot fungus-y.

Indeed, a BBC report from 2017 went viral around the globe when it revealed that there’s been a huge uptick in men presenting with issues such as athlete’s foot and even trench foot in recent years because they’ve been wearing dress shoes, boat shoes and loafers without socks.

That said, wearing loafers without socks has become extremely popular these days, and proponents of the sockless life would say that socks with loafers just looks really dorky, as this WSJ debate relates. In reality, as long as you do it in moderation, you’re probably okay.

Alternatively, The Rock could just be wearing ‘invisible socks’ and we could just be blowing this out of proportion. Please don’t beat us up, man, we love you.
