Airbus successfully completed two test flights at the end of March, in which an A380 proved it could fly using cooking oil as fuel.

Airbus’ A380 test aircraft MSN 1 flew from Blagnac Airport in Toulouse, France, and flew for about three hours, operating one Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engine on 100% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

TotalEnergies provided 27 tonnes of unblended SAF for this flight. Airbus said in a media release the SAF (which was produced in Normandy, close to Le Havre, France) was made from Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) and was primarily made up of cooking oil, as well as other waste fats.

Airbus had previously flown an A350 with this kind of fuel, but never an A380.

“This is the third Airbus aircraft type to fly on 100% SAF over the course of 12 months; the first was an Airbus A350 in March 2021 followed by an A319neo single-aisle aircraft in October 2021,” Airbus said.

CNN Travel reports that “Airbus then followed up with a second A380 flight, using the same cooking oil fuel, on March 29, flying from Toulouse to Nice. The second flight was to monitor SAF use during take-off and landing.”

This news had one outlet speculating “flying to Greece in the future could use cooking oil for fuel.”

Flying from Toulouse to Nice takes an hour and 10 minutes, according to Google Maps. So much further progress still needs to be made, presumably, before Airbus starts attempting long haul flights with cooking oil.

Airbus says that increasing the use of SAF will play a decisive role in achieving the industry’s ambition of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Some reports indicate that SAF could contribute between 53% and 71% of required carbon reductions, Airbus claims.

When it comes to traction, you’re given a couple of options with golf shoes: spiked or spikeless.

Spiked Golf Shoes

Spiked golf shoes are the more traditional of the two, rocking metal or plastic spikes on the sole of shoes that dig into golf course grass, giving you a solid footing. A vast majority of golf courses have now banned metal spikes in an attempt to protect the grass, but plastic “soft spikes” are still fair game.

Spiked golf shoes are particularly useful in wet conditions, being able to provide greater levels of grip compared to spikeless golf shoes.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup is due to kick off on November 21st in Qatar, the first time the quadrennial football – and perhaps the world’s greatest – tournament will be held in the Arab world. Millions of people around the world will have their eyes glued to their screens for four weeks as the world’s greatest footballers take centre stage in the hopes of seeing their country come home with the coveted trophy.

But, for all the goals and glamour, there will inevitably be a fair share of players having run ins with the referees (who can forget French footballer Zinedine Zidane’s red card for his headbutt on Italian player Marco Matarazzi?). But there is one referee who – if he ends up being a referee in this year’s world cup – players will want to put on a conscientious performance for: Anderson Daronco.

Daronco is from Brazil and after studying on a referee course, he became a qualified FIFA referee in 2014 and was selected to take part in the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Putting his qualifications to one side for a moment, however, we need to talk about how jacked this man is.

He’s claimed to have 44cm biceps, standard 6ft 1in tall and weighs in at around 90kgs.

It’s not uncommon for players to argue with a referee’s decision on the pitch, usually to no avail (although with the introduction of VAR technology, sometimes the ref can be coerced into double checking a decision) we can’t imagine many players would feel comfortable squaring up to Daronco.

While it’s unlikely that Daronco will appear at the tournament in Qatar (he could end up as a VAR referee, according to this refereeing forum), Sports Brief reports that he did recently referee a World Cup qualifying match between Uruguay and Peru, which proved how tough the man is.

The Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet caught the ball from a shot by Peru’s Miguel Trauco, but was believed to have stepped back across the line, taking the ball with him. The Peruvian players protested the goal wasn’t awarded, and Daronco didn’t even consult with the VAR, he just simply didn’t award it. The event caused many users on social media to claim the Peruvian players weren’t going to protest any further, purely based on the size of Daronco’s arms.

Since images went viral online, Daronco has now been dubbed the world’s strongest referee – and has been officially nicknamed ‘The Strong Judge’ – thanks in no small part to the size of his arms. He’s no slouch, either, as it’s been claimed he’s capable of running 40-metres in under six seconds.

Despite his size and stature, Daronco is known for his sound judgement when on the football field. In August 2019, he stopped a game between Brazilian clubs Vasco da Game and São Paulo after hearing homophobic slurs from the Vasco fans. It marked the first time a match was halted in Brazil due to homophobic comments.

Daronco was quoted as saying, “Obviously it’s not something in my head, we have an orientation in this direction. FIFA itself has been sanctioning national teams and clubs when similar acts occur, and we do not only cling to homophobic song, we have a whole issue involving racism, or facts that can incite violence, such as banners on the field and xenophobic songs.”

“At the first moment we have the opportunity to realise it, we have to stop and measures to stop it.”

The 2022 FIFA World Cup will begin on 21st November, with the first matches involving groups A and B. These will be Qatar vs Ecuador; Senegal vs Netherlands; England vs Iran and USA vs the winner of a match between Wales and either Scotland or Ukraine. This match is scheduled to take place in June.

In 1980, Eric Bram wrote a New York Times article that gave economists the brilliant ‘Pizza Principle’; a simple method to predict when New York City subway fares would increase. Bram claimed that “since the early 60s the price of a slice of pizza has matched, with uncanny precision, the cost of a New York subway ride.”

Bram was actually pretty spot on, and in the forty-two years since that article was published, indeed the price of pizza has more or less always matched the fare of a subway ride.

Until now, that is.

New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) capped subway fares at US$2.75 per ride at the end of February in an effort to encourage New Yorkers to start regularly catching subways again after a huge ridership decline thanks to the COVID pandemic. The MTA also announced that this ‘cap’ on fares would last until at least June; potentially longer, as due to recent state funding, subway fares shouldn’t have to increase at all in 2022.

In stark contrast, the price of a slice of pizza has done nothing but go up. According to Bloomberg, on average, a slice of cheese pizza – which NYC locals call ‘plain’ or ‘regular’ – will cost you US$3.14. And prices could soon become even higher than that.

Thanks to the pandemic, prices of common pizza ingredients have gone up, and thanks to the whole Russian invasion of Ukraine, gas prices have gone up too, – most New York pizzerias cook with natural-gas ovens – meaning that pizzerias have really had no choice but to increase prices; otherwise, they’d barely break even.

Manager (and son-in-law of the owner) of Pizza Palace, a beloved pizzeria in Manhatten, Panos Kakanas even said:

“We talk about raising prices on a daily basis.”

While it’s fantastic news that subway fares won’t increase for quite some time and it’s completely understandable why the average slice of pizza has gone up, we have to admit that the idea of something named the ‘Pizza Principle’ – which is so damn cool – no longer having any merit is a bit disheartening.
