Subtle Horological Detail No One Noticed At Joe Biden’s Public Vaccination
Subtle Horological Detail No One Noticed At Joe Biden’s Public Vaccination

After months of agony, it seems as if The Pangolin Parade is (slowly) wrapping up.

Not only do we have a vaccine, but we have multiple vaccine candidates. The big challenge now is convincing people of their safety and efficacy – and in the US, two leaders have taken different vaccines publically in order to assuage fears.

Outgoing Vice President Mike Pence and his wife Karen have received the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine, and now President-Elect Joe Biden has received the Moderna vaccine, getting the jab in front of TV cameras at a hospital in Newark, Delaware.

While everyone’s talking about the vaccine – as well as the ongoing 2020 US election debacle – something most people passed over was the watch on Biden’s wrist: an OMEGA Seamaster Professional Diver 300M (ref. 210.30.42.20.03.001).

Watches reveal a lot about the men who wear them. Suitably, this overlooked horological detail from today’s vaccination reveals much about Biden’s character as well as the kind of presidency we can expect from the man going forward.

We’ve talked before about how most politicians (in democratic countries, at least) don’t like to wear expensive or flashy watches while they’re still in office because it makes them look out of touch. Bush Jr. and Clinton famously wore cheap Timex pieces, and while Biden’s OMEGA is slightly more expensive than a Timex, it’s still a rather understated watch.

RELATED: Joe Biden’s Understated Timepiece Reaffirms ‘Unspoken’ Presidential Watch Trend

Biden has a strong affinity for the 300M and owns multiple examples. He’s pretty consistently worn them for the last few decades and is rarely seen out in public with one.

In short? His taste in watches is subtle, consistent, and respectable – which hopefully will be a reflection of his presidency after four years of Trumpian chaos and flashiness.

First released in 1993, the 300M is for many the quintessential Seamaster, and one of the most iconic dive watches on the market. Biden’s 42mm model is crafted from stainless steel and includes a blue ceramic bezel with a white enamel diving scale. The dial is also polished blue ceramic and depicts laser-engraved waves, plus a date window at 6 o’clock. As the name suggests, it’s water-resistant to 300m, and features a helium escape valve at 10 o’clock.

Biden’s inauguration as the 46th President of the United States is scheduled for January 20th, 2021. While the size of Trump’s inauguration crowds was a sore point in comparison to Obama’s, Biden’s are likely to be smaller still thanks to COVID-19 restrictions.

Crazy Melbourne Bastard Builds Real Life Dark Knight ‘Batpod’
Crazy Melbourne Bastard Builds Real Life Dark Knight ‘Batpod’

Superheroes are cool, but there’s no superhero cooler than Batman. That’s just a fact.

While he did go through a camp phase in the 60s, Batman has always been contrasted as both a character and a series due to its grittier tone focus on realism, and ironically because Batman has no superpowers – he outwits his foes through a combination of gadgets, intelligence, unaugmented physical strength and sheer willpower.

It’s this version of Batman that looms large in the public consciousness, in no small part thanks to Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster Dark Knight film trilogy, which revolutionised the superhero genre. Christian Bale’s version of the character is for many the quintessential Batman: stoic, physically imposing, with a bunch of highly-realistic gadgets at his disposal.

The Batmobile in the Dark Knight trilogy is particularly cool: not only does the ‘Tumbler’ resemble more of a tank than a Chevy Corvette, but its two front wheels can also be ejected and turned into a motorcycle: the ultra-minimalist Batpod. It’s this version of the classic ‘Batcycle’ that looms large in many people’s minds, and kids (as well as big kids) around the globe have daydreamed about driving one.

But one Melbourne man turned his dreams into reality – building a real-life Batpod in his own garage.

The Batpod from the Hollywood film… And the ‘Batpod’ from the North Melbourne garage.

The brand of the vehicle hilariously listed as ‘Wayne Enterprises’, our aspiring vigilante says it’s “brilliant for cosplay, display and of course crime-fighting.”

The most impressive part of this bike is that it’s got the same tires as the Tumbler and Batpod from the movie – huge Hoosier Dirt Ovals that must have cost a small fortune. Perhaps that’s why it’s listed on Facebook Marketplace for $8,000 (although the seller is apparently “open to sensible negotiations”).

Unlike the movie bike, which is supposed to be powered by a single-cylinder petrol engine, this ‘Bogan Batcycle’ has a small electric motor, as well as conventional pushbike pedals so it’s able to be used legally on the road. It’s even got fake machine guns on the front – a nice touch.

We’re not quite sure whether this is genius or just questionable. Just imagine rolling up to a comic book convention on one of these… You’d be the coolest Batman there all day for sure.

Now all you need is a cape and a scratchy throat.

‘Insular Peninsula’: Rude Stereotype Could Save Sydney
‘Insular Peninsula’: Rude Stereotype Could Save Sydney

There’s a rumour circulating in Sydney – the virus won’t spread far because Northern Beaches residents never leave the Northern Beaches.

First things first – this is a sociological quip. Health experts have warned anything could still happen (though confirmed cases, for now, compared day by day, are dropping in Sydney).

However, socially there’s more truth to it than you can throw a bucket hat at… which is why it is resonating so loud across social media and news aggregators.

Before you hitch your Volkswagen Golf to its jetstream though, we’d like to take issue with it.

When you think about it – Sydney isn’t built for getting around. Eastern Suburbs residents don’t like to stray more than 5 clicks from Bondi. Inner West freelancers cringe at the thought of moving back to their parents’ beachside mansion. British backpackers wonder why the hell anyone would live anywhere in Sydney but the beach (especially considering Surry Hills is almost as expensive as Manly).

And Western Sydney has better Korean BBQ’s than the CBD anyway.

So: if the Sydney outbreak of Covid 19, which is focussed around a cluster in Avalon, a suburb almost 40km from the CBD, doesn’t spread beyond the city’s northern beaches it won’t just be thanks to the “state’s contact tracers” and “the disinclination of locals in the area to leave their ‘hood,'” as news.com.au reports, but due to the fact that no one in Sydney likes to leave their hood.

In other words: we’ve been training for this moment our entire lives…

RELATED: Sydney Man’s ‘Unbearable’ Experience Reveals The Perils Of Moving Too Far Away From The City

That’s DMARGE’s belief, anyway.

This whole topic kicked off after news outlets jumped on Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s diplomatic comment that the northern beaches community was “cohesive”.

As news.com.au put it, “Sydneysiders actually have another term for the region of 250,000 people that begins at the harbour in Manly and juts out towards the central coast – the ‘insular peninsula.'”

A post shared by Neel Kolhatkar (@neelkolhatkar)

This comes after comedian Neel Kolhatkar joked “if there’s somewhere least likely to spread this thing, it’s the bloody northern beaches” and satirical newspaper The Betoota Advocate wrote an article entitled “Northern Beaches Locals Surprised Virus Bothered To go Into City Because That’s A Trek Bro.”

RELATED: Controversial Bondi Beach Photo Depicts Scene That Could Never Happen In America

Lines that hit hardest were:

“[Fictional] Joel Joelson (33), local Newport residents says he can’t believe the virus bother to make the ‘trek’ into the city.”

“To be honest I thought the virus would just stick around here.”

“Don’t know why it would leave, no one else does… Why would ya.”

“Joel’s mate, Jai (29) agrees.”

“Yeah bro. Woolloomooloo? Trek bro.”

“I thought the virus would like, get a roofing apprenticeship, and like, settle down with a mate’s younger sister when she finishes high school bro.”

Maybe the stereotypes are right after all? Maybe the northern beaches has been self-isolating for decades?

Largest Rolex Boutique In Southern Hemisphere Opens In Sydney
Largest Rolex Boutique In Southern Hemisphere Opens In Sydney

For such a comparatively small market, luxury brands focus a lot of attention on the Land Down Under.Part of that is simple economics – Australia is a wealthy nation – but it’s also (arguably) because Australians are real tastemakers. The Australian luxury market is competitive, innovative and demanding, with a strong demand on performance: Australians want goods that can keep up with their adventurous lifestyles. It’s no surprise then that Rolex has always been a popular brand here. The 115-year-old watch brand has always been known for marrying prestige and luxury with sporty functionality; creating tool watches par excellence.Yet it’s still a welcome surprise to hear that Rolex, in partnership with The Hour Glass, has established their largest boutique in the Southern Hemisphere – and one of the largest standalone Rolex boutiques in the world – right in the middle of the Sydney CBD.

More chronometers than you can shake a stick at. Image: Rolex Sydney
Rolex Sydney is located at 192 Pitt Street on the corner of Market Street, the new boutique occupies three floors of a heritage-listed building, overlooking the heart of Sydney’s luxury shopping precinct. The new boutique is a 400 square meter temple to all things Rolex, a veritable place of worship for Australian watch aficionados.A striking backlit emerald aqua wall spans the ground and first floor, highlighting this Sydney Rolex’s rich heritage – its wave motif referencing the iconic Oyster, the world’s first waterproof wristwatch. This intense green is referred around the boutique, creating accents that harmonize a refreshed colour palette. The walls mix textures from walnut brown wood to beige-coloured stone. The boutique also introduces distinct features that capture the essence of this unique location, including a hand-crafted stucco panel that illustrates the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. A bespoke five-meter tall, hand-blown crystal glass chandelier traverses two levels of the building. Further unique features include a dedicated exhibition space that occupies the entire basement and a two-story decorative feature screen that provides a spectacular contrast with the grand staircase.

The ground floor also includes a special exhibition entitled ‘A Watch Born to Explore‘, which explores (pardon the pun) the Explorer and Explorer II: two of Rolex’s most action-focused timepieces. The Explorer made its debut in 1953, in honour of the first successful ascent of Mount Everest: Edmund Hilary, Tenzing Norgay and the rest of the British expedition were all wearing Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches.Later, the Explorer II, created in 1971, became the watch of choice of speleologists, volcanologists and explorers of every corner of the globe, yet another evolution of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual line.

DMARGE understands stock levels at the new Sydney Rolex boutique are very healthy – welcome news for Aussie Rolex fans. With so much on display and such a sumptuous experience on offer right in the heart of Sydney, other luxury brands – especially other luxury watch brands – should be on high alert: Rolex and Australia’s love story has just started another exciting chapter.Find the new boutique on Google Maps here.

New Tinder Initiative Could Change How Young People Travel Forever
New Tinder Initiative Could Change How Young People Travel Forever

Thailand has just announced a scroll stopping collaboration with Tinder. ‘Matchmaking’ tourist trips.

While lockdowns are making partying around the globe tricky (to say the least) right now, this new initiative has DMARGE wondering if Contiki’s days are numbered as the most iconic conveyer of young travellers around the world.

In an effort to boost tourism, Thai authorities are working with Tinder to bring tourists tour packages designed for matchmaking. Though the trips are currently aimed at domestic tourists, who knows – if the idea has legs, what’s stopping it in the coming years from spreading throughout the world? It’s early days yet, of course. But read the down-low and decide for yourself.

CNN Travel reports, “The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the country’s official travel body, is planning nine itineraries throughout the country and is launching with three pilot trips. The first, which will take place on December 20, is a cruise along Bangkok’s Chao Phraya River for up to 100 singletons.”

“The day-long experience includes sightseeing, dinner and a talk from a Feng Shui expert ‘who will share tips on how to pay homage to Buddha and ask for blessings,’ which should invariably give tongue-tied daters something to talk about.”

“The other two pilot experiences,” CNN Travel reports, “are a beachside party and concert in Phuket and a train trip to the Pa Sak Jolasid Dam in Lopburi, both in January 2021 and accommodating up to 50 people each. Bookings open on December 15 and can be made through the Sneaksdeal website (in Thai).”

“The ‘Single Travel Route’ targets solo travellers who prefer to travel alone to various destinations in Thailand,” TAT Governor, Mr Yuthasak Supasorn, said in a media release.

Right now, even though Thailand’s borders are open to foreign tourists, to go there you must quarantine in a hotel room for two weeks and pay for a visa application before arriving (unlike in pre-Covid years, where you could do it on arrival). You must also be allowed to leave your home country.

On a more positive note: if this ‘single travel route’ proves successful, maybe it could be the new Contiki coming out of Covid? Whether you find the prospect offputting or awesome, it’s sure food for thought…

The Rock’s ‘Scarring’ Fitness Lesson Every Man Can Learn From
The Rock’s ‘Scarring’ Fitness Lesson Every Man Can Learn From

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is a pretty mellow guy, but you certainly wouldn’t want to get on his bad side.

The former WWE legend and current Hollywood superstar is known for being one of the fittest men alive, and his dedication to the temple that is his body is insane. This is a man who’ll work out so hard that he’ll make himself bleed.

The result of all that grinding in the gym? Demigod status. The 6ft 5in monster is so built that he can’t fit in most cars, and is more vascular than a charging bull. He’s also done some serious damage to his hands, as he revealed last week.

Johnson posted a video to his Instagram showing off his well-worn mitts, which are covered in callouses from years of weight-lifting and grift. It’s a somewhat unpleasant image, but Johnson wasn’t just showing off – he also shared a valuable lesson about what a man’s hands mean.

“If these torn up, fucked up, scarred up, broken knuckles, torn tendons and calloused hands could talk,” he muses.

“They might be hard on the eyes to look at and a bit jarring to the touch, but they tell the story of my life and it’s who I am – and when I look you in the eyes and shake your hand with these torn up suckers you can bet your hard earned dollar I’ll see my word through.”

“Contracts and term sheets are binding (legally;) but the real code and binding agreement is our handshake. Eye to eye,” he concludes.

While we might not be doing as many of them thanks to The Bat Kiss (instead, being forced to do that awkward elbow tap thing that no-one seems to be able to avoid) the humble handshake is an incredibly important ritual, especially for men. You don’t want to be known as that dude with a bad handshake.

RELATED: How To Stop Having A Sweaty-Ass Handshake

You also don’t want to be known as someone who’s word doesn’t mean anything. A truly magnificent bastard’s handshake should fill someone with confidence; be just as good as a legally-binding contract.

Someone’s hands can tell you a lot about a person. I was always told by my father to never trust a man whose hands are too soft. Now, it could just mean that they moisturise, but there’s an old-school lesson in there about how someone who works with their hands for a living might be more trustworthy; more understanding of the value of hard work than someone who has the time and privilege to keep their hands feeling baby-soft.

‘The Rock’ might not be a day labourer, but the sheer dedication and willpower he exhibits in the gym that’s got his hands looking like miniature deserts also reveals a lot about his character.

Ben Simmons Secures The Bag With Luxurious Louis Vuitton Luggage
Ben Simmons Secures The Bag With Luxurious Louis Vuitton Luggage

Few Australian basketball players have enjoyed the same success or celebrity as Ben Simmons.

The 24-year-old Melburnian has been wowing basketball fans since the age of 15, the year he nabbed an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship and represented Australia at the 2012 FIBA Under-17 World Championships. Since then, he’s played for Louisiana State University in the NCAA, the Australian national team and most notably the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA, where he’s been for the last four years.

Widely regarded as one of the most accomplished athletes in the sport and easily one of the best Australian basketballers of all time, Simmons has always carried a lot of expectations on his shoulders. But if you’re carrying all that baggage, you may as well do it in style – as Simmons revealed last week.

Photographed boarding a plane with 76ers teammate Danny Green, Simmons was ready to travel in luxury, toting a Louis Vuitton travel bag and scarf; a VLONE x NAV ‘Bad Habits But Good Intentions’ hoodie and Fear Of God Essentials track pants.

While Louis Vuitton might be more famous these days for its ready-to-wear fashion – thanks to the influence of the prêt-à-porter maestros that have headed up creative direction at the French luxury house, such as Marc Jacobs, Kim Jones and most recently Virgil Abloh – the 166-year-old atelier was founded as a luggage and leather goods manufacturer, and still remains the final word in luxury luggage.

Not all Louis Vuitton bags are made of leather, however. Some of the earliest Louis Vuitton products were made with canvas, and Simmon’s bag appears to be made of felt, with leather trim.

It’s been a tough week for Simmons, who’s endured gossip that the 76ers wanted to trade him for the Houston Rocket’s James Harden – a rumour Philadelphia 76ers coach Doc Rivers has been quick to shut down, Fox Sports reports. At least he’s got some LV to take his mind off things…

Guilty Reason Travellers Keep Returning To ‘Worst Luxury Hotel Of 2020’
Guilty Reason Travellers Keep Returning To ‘Worst Luxury Hotel Of 2020’

It’s rare you hear the word ‘worst’ in the same sentence as ‘luxury.’ But that’s just what happened in a recent report; The World’s Best (And Worst) New Luxury Hotels 2020.

Produced by Luxury Travel Intelligence (LTI), the ranking offers a glimpse into the best (and, as promised, worst) new places to stay all around the globe.

“This has been an unprecedented year,” LTI writes. “But in the middle of all the sadness and chaos the world over, the global luxury hotel sector has demonstrated how bold and resilient it can be.”

“While we estimate that around 75 per cent of the anticipated new luxury hotel openings have been postponed, a number of impressive properties have found a way through. So, of the 31 new properties we have managed to visit this year, we have settled on an exceptional 15 (and one particularly disappointing project).”

That project? The unfortunate Dolce Hanoi Golden Lake. LTI claims, “Even pre-pandemic, this ‘all gold’ hotel (with their gold crust topped hamburgers) would have been considered too ostentatious and out of touch with the needs of today’s luxury traveller.”

A post shared by Kino Hà (@hakino__)

LTI goes on to write: “This is an embarrassment for the luxury hotel sector – as it struggles with the biggest global challenge it has ever faced.” Why would anyone stay there then? Instagram may hold the answer: Social Media Steeze.

If there’s one guilty pleasure we all know all too well, it’s flinging as much FOMO at friends and family as possible. This is something Dolce Hanoi Golden Lake offers in spades. From posing by gold brick walls to enjoying the most luxurious bath of your life, the place is a no holds barred opulent escapade. And that’s before you even take into account the poolside views (and the incredible afternoon tea offerings that wouldn’t look out of place at Buckingham Palace).

The interior of the entrance also puts most high-end fashion stores to shame. Oh, and it’s worth noting the place, at the time of writing has 6 Tripadvisor reviews, all of which rate it “excellent.”

‘Duckheads’ Putting Sydney’s Freedom At Risk Urged To Reconsider Immature Behaviour
‘Duckheads’ Putting Sydney’s Freedom At Risk Urged To Reconsider Immature Behaviour

It’s been a year of controversy. America’s seen Proscecco Protests, $400,000 Porsches destroyed and Matt Damon get a mullet. In Australia, after the bushfires, we’ve had Melbourne undergo a strict lockdown for swathes of the year, and now, with a recent flare-up of Covid on the Northern Beaches, Sydney is set to hold the short end of the stick just in time for Christmas.

This is a time where we all need to pull together. It’s also a time of reflection, with many – apparently – having been lulled into a false sense of security throughout Sydney’s Golden Months. Now that there has been an outbreak of Covid 19 on the Northern Beaches (which authorities are working rapidly to contain) it has come to light that some Sydneysiders have given fake names and numbers when signing into venues.

New South Wales Health Minister Brad Hazzard said today this “must cease” in a public announcement reported across multiple news outlets (see: 7News, news.com.au).

Speaking after NSW recorded 15 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 on Monday, bringing the total in the northern beaches cluster to 83, Hazzard called the behaviour “about as stupid as it gets.”

“We have world class tracers in health,” he said. “But they can only do their job if we as a community give them the information they need if and when it is needed.”

“Now, what we are finding is that some of the visitors to various venues still think that it is funny to be caught putting in there that you’re Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse or a false phone number. That must stop.”

“This is a worldwide COVID pandemic. And thinking it’s smart to call yourself Donald Duck or Mickey Mouse is about as stupid as it gets. So that must cease.”

Some Twitter commenters were quick to condemn the actions too, making their feelings known towards these, as DMARGE is dubbing them, ‘duckheads.’

Speaking to journalists, Premier Gladys Berejiklian has strongly encouraged venues and patrons to strictly do the right thing, to give Sydney the best chance possible of controlling this latest outbreak before Christmas.

“It’s so important for all venues to have their QR codes in place, their systems in place.”
