Billionaire Elon Musk has revealed on Twitter that he’s been intermittently fasting and it’s improved his health immensely.
Diet culture is a huge part of today’s society. And thanks to social media, celebrities, influencers and your average Joe can all publicly boast about what methods they’ve tried to successfully lose weight.
Case in point: Elon Musk, the richest person in the world, is the latest person to jump on the ‘using social media to promote a particular diet’ bandwagon. The Tesla CEO took to Twitter to reveal he’s been intermittently fasting.
“On [the] advice of a good friend, I’ve been fasting periodically & feel healthier.”
Elon Musk
In two follow-up Tweets, Musk then recommended “The Zero fasting app” – the world’s most popular intermittent fasting and health tracking app – and divulged that he’s lost over twenty pounds (roughly nine kilograms) since he started intermittent fasting.
“[I’m] over 20 lbs down from my (unhealthy) peak weight.”
Elon Musk

Of course, Musk isn’t the first to endorse intermittent fasting; according to Body + Soul, multiple celebrities like Chris Hemsworth and Jennifer Aniston swear by the fasting method. If you’re wondering what the hell intermittent fasting is, it’s a diet that doesn’t dictate what you can eat but rather when you can eat.
For example, you can eat from 12pm to 8pm but then from 8pm to 12pm the next day, you can’t eat anything – so, you essentially fast for 16 hours.

Like any ‘fad’ diet – although intermittent fasting has been around for quite some time now – there are positives and negatives. Many, including Musk, say it aids weight loss and overall health, and some research suggests that intermittent fasting can prevent both diabetes and heart disease.
But intermittent fasting (done the wrong way) can also make you prone to dehydration, heartburn, eating disorders and more. As with any diet, we highly recommend seeking professional advice before trying it and in the meantime, you can read a detailed guide on intermittent fasting here.

While some watch manufacturers have models that are considered ‘must-haves’ for avid watch collectors – the Rolex Submariner or the OMEGA Speedmaster, for example – few brands come close to the outright exquisiteness presented by luxury Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre.
The company, founded in 1833 by Antoine LeCoultre, has an enormous number of accolades and patents to its name, including the world’s smallest movement, the first keyless watch and the groundbreaking Atmos Clock, which generates its power from temperature and atmospheric pressure changes.
Suffice to say, Jaeger-LeCoultre is an absolute master in the field of horology and one that demands the respect of watch enthusiasts around the world. No wonder they’re called “the watchmaker’s watchmaker”.
Jaeger-LeCoultre was originally known as LeCoultre & Cie from 1866 until 1937. ‘Jaeger’ came along thanks to a partnership with Edmond Jaeger, a Paris-based watchmaker who worked with the French Navy. In 1903, Edmond set Swiss watch manufacturers the task of actually producing ultra-thin movements he had designed and invented. LeCoultre accepted and succeeded with the LeCoultre Calibre 145.
LeCoultre was also – in 1903 – the exclusive movement supplier to Cartier after the famous French jeweller made a fifteen-year agreement with Jaeger (and LeCoultre produced all of Jaeger’s movements). It was this collaboration that eventually spawned the Jaeger-LeCoultre name.
With over 1,200 calibres, 400 patents and hundreds more inventions, picking the very best Jaeger-LeCoultre watches to buy right now isn’t the easiest of tasks. However, just as LeCoultre accepted Edmond Jaeger’s challenge, we have accepted this challenge ourselves and present to you the coolest JLC watches to buy this year.

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic Large Monoface

Reference Number: 3858522
Case Material: Stainless Steel
Size: 45.6mm x 27.4mm
Price: AU$12,600
The Reverso is an absolute classic; not just as a Jaeger-LeCoultre timepiece, but in the entire history of wristwatches. First launched in 1930, the Reverso was designed to be worn by British Army Officers in India, where it also needed to be able to withstand the rigours of polo matches. The dial can be flipped over – or reversed – so that the face would be concealed and therefore protected from mallet strokes. Its square face helps lend it towards being worn in more formal settings, but its Art Deco styling and pure aesthetic suit casual applications as well.
This Reverso Classic Large Monoface is a slightly more restrained take on the Reverso. It has only one face, with clean Arabic numerals, some funky blue second hands and a small seconds display at 6 o’clock. Turn it over and you’ll reveal a clean slate of steel, perfect to engrave a message on.
It’s also mounted on a minimalist leather strap made by luxury Argentine bootmakers Casa Fagliano, which is both comfortable and stylish.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Memovox

Reference Number: 9038670
Case Material: Stainless Steel
Size: 42mm
Price: AU$19,700
The Polaris Memovox is another equally iconic model from the JLC history books. First released in 1968 as part of the Polaris series, the Memovox edition has the extra selling point of a mechanical alarm, or “voice of memory” – JLC first launched a standalone Memovox timepiece in 1950 – which was designed to assist divers to tell them when it was time to resurface.
To set it, you need to use the crown found at 2 o’clock, which rotates the internal bezel upon which there is a small triangle. Simply move this to the time you want the alarm to go off at, and you’re done.
This particular model of the Polaris Memvox was released to commemorate the watch’s 50th anniversary and is limited to 1000 pieces. The coupling of a black dial with off-white hour markers and hands (both of are treated with lume) give it a thoroughly vintage feel that helps it acknowledge its roots. It is, however, a completely modern affair with a rubber strap adding to its sporting credentials.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Control Calendar

Reference Number: 4148420
Case Material: Stainless Steel
Size: 40mm
Price: AU$20,300
JLC introduced this clever watch in 2020, but the Master Control family of watches has been around since 1992. The ‘Control’ in its name refers to Jaeger-LeCoultre’s 1000 Hours Control certification, which JLC debuted with this model range and is now regarded as one of the most gruelling quality control regimes in watchmaking.
Ultra-clean, this calendar model features day and month indicators at 10 and 2 o’clock respectively, a date hand plus a blue moonphase disc framed within a small seconds subdial.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Duomètre Quantième Lunaire

Reference Number: 6042422
Case Material: Rose Gold
Size: 42mm
Price: AU$78,500
Now for something even more complicated. JLC’s Duomètre models are some of their most refined and complex. They feature a characteristic large double subdial design that evoke observatory instruments – an aesthetic heightened by their classic design language.
This Duomètre features a semi-openworked dial which reveals parts of the model’s fine watchmaking movement, the in-house calibre 381, a manual-winding number with a 50-hour power reserve. Its two larger dials are dedicated to a date display with integrated moonphase as well as a traditional hours and minutes indicator.
The third subdial is actually part of the jumping stop seconds system, which ensures accuracy of up to 1/6th of a second when setting the time piece.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual

Reference Number: 1308470
Case Material: Stainless Steel
Size: 39mm
Price: AU$40,100
Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Master Ultra Thin line of watches has always been revered within the watch community. For JLC to pack in various complications with different models, yet keep the timepieces much thinner than you’d expect, is no easy task. This model complete with perpetual calendar – launched in 2013 – is testament to that, coming in at just 9.2mm thick, which is, quite frankly, insane.
While it can also be had with either a rose or white gold case for those who love their precious metals, the stainless steel option should make a lot of watch fanatics particularly excited, as it makes a perpetual calendar that bit more accessible.
Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Grande Tradition Gyrotourbillon Westminster Perpétual

Reference Number: 5253420
Case Material: White Gold
Size: 43mm
Price: On Request
If ever you needed evidence to prove that JLC really is a cut above the rest of the competition, then this mouthful of a watch is it. A monumental feat of engineering, there’s a lot going on with this watch.
Your eyes will no doubt be drawn to the gyrotourbillon, or multi-axis flying tourbillon: this complication was invented by JLC and sees a regular tourbillon cage mounted inside another cage, so that it rotates on both vertical and horizontal axes, thus eliminating the effects of gravitational forces.
Elsewhere there is a minute repeater with a Westminster chime to indicate the quarters between hours and minutes, again, no easy accomplishment. Oh, and then you also have a perpetual calendar, a walk in the park for a manufacturer of JLC’s calibre. In fact, the JLC 184 movement inside has 1056 parts, all in a case that is just 43mm wide and 8.9mm high. Hats off to JLC.

Best Jaeger-LeCoultre Watches FAQ
How much is a Jaeger-LeCoultre Watch?
Because of their use of complex movements and precious metals, Jaeger-LeCoultre watches can demand high prices. The most affordable route into the brand is with a Reverso, most examples of which will set you back less than $10,000. However, models such as the Master Grande Tradition Gyrtourbillon Westminster Perpetual will cost you well over $1 million.
Do Jaeger-LeCoultre watches hold their value?
This is a tricky question to answer, but in general, no, JLC watches will not hold their value. At least, not compared to other brands such as Rolex and Patek Philippe. Select JLC models may be able to command a higher price than what you paid if you ever sell it, but it would need to be in an incredibly clean condition to have such a chance. You should buy one because you love it, not because you think it's going to make you a packet.
What is the best Jaeger-LeCoultre watch?
A very subjective question. For us, we love the Reverso for its ability to have its face flipped around. It's an icon. The Master Control Chronograph Calendar is another favourite too. But since JLC offers a wide range of timepieces with a generous selection of complications used throughout, you should have no issue in finding the best Jaeger-LeCoultre watch for you.

Clearly wanting a piece of the streaming platforms action, technology behemoth Apple released its own Apple TV Plus streaming service in late 2019. At launch, Apple TV Plus didn’t offer much in the way of competition to the well-established giants of Netflix, Stan and Disney Plus, but since its inception, Apple has slowly but surely been adding more and more appealing and enthralling content.
So, what is Apple TV Plus, what content can you watch, how can you watch it and, perhaps most importantly, how much does Apple TV Plus cost? Read on to find out.
What is Apple TV Plus?

Apple TV+ is a streaming platform from technology giant, Apple. Launched on November 1 2019, Apple fully intends its streaming service to be a genuine rival to the likes of Netflix et al. Of course, Apple tends to employ forceful tactics to get its way, and, while we admit the content offering of Apple TV Plus has improved since it launched, we still wouldn’t call it a genuine rival.
Chief among the reasons for that, is that Apple TV Plus only offers films and TV shows that fall under the Apple Originals banner. By this, we mean that the only content you can watch is content created and developed by Apple. There is no extensive library of classic films and TV shows that you can find on rival services.
Not that Apple seems to care about that, of course. The Californian company has slowly but surely been investing more and more money into the Apple TV Plus platform, and the results are certainly starting to pay off.
Indeed, the majority of Apple Originals have been critically acclaimed and are extremely enjoyable. Apple TV Plus is home to the likes of the multi-award-winning comedy series Ted Lasso, Morning Wars, starring Jennifer Aniston and Reece Witherspoon, Defending Jacob, Oscar-winning Coda and Greyhound, for instance – meaning Apple TV+ is well worth having if you’re a cinephile.
Elaborating on the fact Apple TV Plus is a great option for those who really do love their movies, the streaming service also offers up to 4K Ultra HD streaming for the very best in video quality, and you can also benefit from Dolby Atmos. You will need compatible hardware to be able to revel in the enveloping sound format, but if you do, you really can have a cinema-like experience at home.
How much is Apple TV Plus in Australia?
There are various ways to subscribe to Apple TV Plus in Australia, and so while you may have your assumptions that it will be expensive because it’s from Apple, it might actually be more affordable than you think.
Anyone can sign up to Apple TV Plus for $7.99/month, but Apple also offers a number of other avenues that can give you either a limited free period of use, or a completely free subscription as an add-on.
The various subscription options for Apple TV+ include:
- Standalone subscription: $7.99 a month.
- 3 months free if you buy a new iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Mac or Apple TV device. Switches
- Included as part of an Apple One subscription for $19.95/month
- Free with an Apple Music Student subscription plan
Apple TV Plus free trial
If you’re tempted by the idea of Apple TV Plus but don’t want to sign-up to a new subscription immediately, then Apple does offer a 7-day free trial, for new customers, to take the streaming service for a full spin.
Apple TV Plus features
Say what you will about Apple, but the Apple TV Plus offering does have actually much to excite people who really do love watching movies and TV shows at home. Most notably, Apple TV Plus supports 4K Ultra HD streaming, and this is included in the $7.99/month subscription fee. Some other streaming services, such as Netflix, will charge you extra to unlock this higher-quality video format.
And, unlike virtually very other streaming service in existence that limits you to the number of screens you can watch content on simultaneously, Apple TV Plus can be streamed on up to 6 separate screens or devices at any one time. Finally, you can also download the vast majority of Apple TV Plus content for offline viewing.
Something else that can make Apple TV Plus appealing is that, because Apple produces and distributes all the content available on it, the same content is available in every country where Apple TV Plus is available. Other streaming services can often succumb to licensing restrictions, so what your friends in the United States may be able to watch on their Netflix account, you won’t be able to watch in Australia.
What devices can I use to watch Apple TV+?
Obviously, Apple TV Plus is available natively on Apple devices (the Apple TV Plus app comes pre-installed on new Apple devices). But, you can also access Apple TV Plus on a few other third-party devices too. Apple has said it does plan to further increase the availability and compatibility of the app with more and more devices, to increase its exposure.
Apple TV Plus can be easily accessed from a range of devices, including:
- Apple TV media-streaming boxes (3rd generation box required as a minimum)
- iPhones
- iPads
- Macs
- Amazon Fire TVs
- Google TV/Smart TVs running the Android TV operating system
- Select TVs from Samsung, LG, Sony, Vizio, Panasonic and Hisense
- PCs
- PlayStation 4, PlayStation5
- Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S
A full list of supported devices can be found on the Apple website.
What are some of the best Apple TV Plus shows?
It’s all well and good telling you how much Apple TV Plus costs and how you can access it, but what about some content recommendations? Fortunately, there is plenty to suggest.
Because of Apple’s strong financial positioning, the technology giant is able to attract some serious star power and is now churning out new content at a high rate, so much so, that a new Apple Original is added to the service every month. Standout TV shows include:
- Ted Lasso (Jason Sudekis, Hannah Waddingham)
- See (Jason Mamoa, Alfre Woodward)
- The Morning Show (Jennifer Aniston, Reece Witherspoon, Steve Carell)
- Severance (Adam Scott, dir. Ben Stiller)
- Physical (Rose Byrne)
As for Apple TV Plus movies, the lineup is just as impressive. Standout movies include:
- CODA (Emilia Jones, Eugenio Dubez)
- On The Rocks (Bill Murray, Rashida Jones)
- Palmer (Justin Timberlake, Juno Temple)
- The Tragedy of Macbeth (Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand, dir. Joel Coen)
- Finch (Tom Hanks, Caleb Landry Jones)
In summary, then, Apple TV Plus might not necessarily be a replacement for any other streaming services in your life, but if you can afford an extra $7.99 a month, then it will certainly make a worthwhile additions for some genuinely blockbuster content.

The first Orca predated Great White Shark has washed up in Hartenbos, Mossel Bay, a town in the Western Cape province of South Africa.
According to Alison Towner, a marine biologist, scuba instructor and skipper in South Africa, the first Orca predated white shark carcass washed up in Hartenbos, Mossel Bay last week. Towner, who is leading the research on these interactions between sea creatures, as part of a PhD, says she is “conducting the necropsies with expert colleagues on all of the shark carcasses here in South Africa.”
“It never gets easier seeing this.”
Alison Towner
Speaking about the shark that washed up, Towner said: “This is a very fresh sub adult female shark.” She also recommended anyone curious read the paper “Fear at the top: killer whale predation drives white shark absence at South Africa’s largest aggregation site,” which will be open access in the African Journal of Marine Science for another week or so.
When asked if this was becoming more common, and whether it was a learned behaviour that other Orcas could pick up on, Towner said: “Cultural transmission is a reality yes.” She was also asked whether it was the two “famous” orcas that have been reportedly attacked Great Whites before. She said: “Quite likely them but could be others.”
Another Instagram user asked how on earth Orcas manage such a clean taking of the liver. Towner responded: “They tear them open we have seen direct evidence of this. Sharks skin is very tough so raker marks (tooth impressions) are usually quite faint.”
When asked if there was any research being done to look into why orcas, or at least these two orcas, seem to be hunting food sources outside of their normal choices, Towner said: “This is their normal diet a paper by Foote came out recently explaining why Orcas shouldn’t be so heavily ecotyped in the N Atlantic… SA Orcas likely show more plasticity than their northern hemisphere counterparts.”
One commenter then chimed in with the following: “Given how endangered they are now, what do you think about taking steps to remove the 2 orca culprits (or are other orcas doing this in the region too now?) As awful as that would be, is it for the greater good in this instance?”
Towner said: “Lots of discussions ongoing as you can appreciate a very complex topic with very few clear-cut answers.”
In terms of whether this incident will change where Great Whites live, Towner said: “We have to follow the evidence and not speculate but… there could well be more movement away from Mossel bay now this is starting to repeat.”
Some commenters saw this as “Nature doing exactly what it’s supposed to do” and called it amazing, while others expressed their fears that the two Orca brothers may be part of a pod up to 100, and that they might pass this technique of shark predation on (“how many already know?”).
Towner also emphasised in a follow up post that Orcas are not the only pressure on the Great White population.
“More food for thought,” she said. “Time to be clear about something, again. Orcas are ONE pressure additionally now on Southern African white sharks. However, they are not the ONLY threat.”
She said white sharks were also under threat by fisheries and shark nets, with some studies concluding that shark nets were the worst culprits. Towner then said reducing this number is crucial, “especially in light of other threats this species faces.”

They say money can’t buy happiness, but dare you to feel sad if you were the owner of a slick Lamborghini, a huge family home and enough disposable income to jet off around the world for your annual holiday.
Put simply, money really does make the world go round, and there’s a good chance you’ve wondered how to earn more money and how your salary compares to the average Australian salary.
Fortunately, the Australian Bureau of Statistics can answer that second question, as it released data in November 2021 that says you need to be earning $1748.40 a week to be considered ‘average’. This would mean if your annual salary is $91,000 or above, you would be classed as an above-average earner. Of course, this is an umbrella figure of sorts, and (unfortunately) depending on your gender, age, where you live and which sector you work in, this figure will change.
In fact, the ABS does indeed break down the average weekly earning figures by gender, and the disheartening news is that, on average, women can expect to earn around $200 less a week than men.

Necklaces for men are a great accessory to elevate and personalise a look. The best necklaces for men serve as a nice accent for any occasion and demonstrate your ability to cultivate a sense of style that is all your own.
The first necklace most men buy is often classic and traditional – gold chain anyone? – but for men that want to expand beyond the typical, there are several fashion brands that release their own collections of cool necklaces for men, that offer a multitude of styles and materials that will allow you to stray from the pack and create a look all of your own.
Sterling silver and yellow gold necklaces are two of the most popular precious metals used by many labels, but for those looking for something a little more premium, there are some men’s necklace brands creating pieces from white gold, rose gold, and platinum.
Whether you prefer silver or gold is a personal choice, and it is normal to see a dressed-down look that could include a simple gold chain link or branded men’s necklace over a v-neck t-shirt paired with chinos. Try experimenting with different coloured metals and the outfits you already have nailed down to find out which pieces work with which looks.

“Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.” Fashion can relate to the sarcastic quip à la Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, because the fashion editor was right, florals aren’t new. They sprout again every season.
So, what’s the forecast this time?
While floral prints were easily worn on swim shorts and t-shirts in season’s past, other – more serious – men’s fashion classics continue to bloom. But before you set out on a flower power pursuit, we’ve laid out the necessary top soil for a more than fertile floral style for men.
In This Story…
Breaking It Down
The hibiscus is back this season. So too is the palm frond and fern – forming a strong Hawaiian contingent in support of the floral print. The Italian elegance of paisley is another big floral to bud, alongside newcomer Chinoiserie – oriental florals once reserved for china and ceramics.
The second floral point to mention: muted colours. Sticking to the Seventies influence seen in men’s fashion, the floral print is subject to the dark side. And if brightness becomes a floral piece, the background is nearly always dark and neutral tone.
With the ground work laid, here are the key bold floral print pieces for men to adopt this season.
Short-Sleeve Shirts
If you’re betting on just one floral piece in your wardrobe, make it the short-sleeved shirt. Both high and low price brands have stocked up on the summertime Hawaiian shirt, so it’s easy to pick up one in your favourite colour. Just remember (as always) the fit is everything; finding a shirt that sits effortlessly across the chest and never tight on the arms – letting the sleeve cut a few centimetres above the elbow.
And then the collar: the Cuban shirt Fifties-style collar is making a comeback, especially smart done up under a neutral blazer.
A basic t-shirt, as an undershirt, is great way to layer. A neutral t-shirt adds some much needed ‘peace’ to the boisterous floral and eliminates any touristic connotations. Finally, keep your chinos or shorts neutral too for the safest option. While we wouldn’t normally suggest you try the double-floral look (akin to double denim) some high-profile celebrities including Kevin Hart, LeBron James and Scott Disick have been seen wearing matching shirts and shorts combinations. You won’t want to go too loud, but double-floral could be the next big thing in menswear.
Tailoring
Floral tailoring has certainly received its fair share of the limelight, so it’s essential to tap a suit in flower pattern, before they wilt and die away. A colourful and vibrant alternative, florals instantly perk up a two-piece party suit and add some extra summer romance to a party blazer and denim combination.
After selecting your botanical best, layer the jacket with a neutral shirt (crisp white or jet black for something super fresh) and team leather brogues or a pair of white sneakers for a street wear edge. Alternatively, flip the switch and wear a statement floral button-down under a block coloured suit – losing the tie to let the flower shirt feature under the jacket.
A floral suit or separates is the biggest bud statement to make this season, so it’s important to counterbalance all that pizazz with masculine elements – cool sunglasses, a sharp short haircut and above all, incredible confidence.
Bomber Jackets
The bomber jacket is a menswear essential. While sleek and minimal will always be tasteful, bold floral bombers are a statement way of working patterns into the typically neutral coat.
The once-military jacket is best lightweight, and with slim and fitted cut (not puffer style) – seeing you work the versatility of the jacket florals as a cool replacement suit jacket over trousers or as a stylish alternative to an active cropped coat over jogger pants or jeans.
For subtle print-age, stick to fern or palm styles in muted colours; while the brave should look to paisley or hibiscus flowers – in pastels and primary hues for a dressier aesthetic.
Accessories
From pocket square to footwear, the floral accessory is for the man who is a little bloom shy – but still wants to divulge in the fanciful flower. Never one to forego the finer things in life, plant the print over low cut sneakers for floral kick or a rose-pattern brim on a cotton snapback cap.
Outside street wear, floral pocket squares and neckerchiefs are lightweight and easily styled fabrics to adorn muted tailoring while a flower-power tie adds a springtime aroma to the boring business suit.
And for the man who wants the real deal, add a boutonniere to your lapel. It’s the perfect way to add some physical floral to a suit jacket, without looking like a wedding bouquet.

The British royal family, despite their immense popularity, are often seen as completely aloof and out of touch with normal people… Yet Lewis Hamilton has recently shared an anecdote regarding him and Prince Charles that suggests that the next in line to the throne is more human than some might give him credit for.
The seven-time Formula 1 World Champion – who was knighted by Prince Charles last year in recognition of his unmatched achievements in motorsport – told Vanity Fair about the two times he met the Prince of Wales, and how Charles honoured him.
“When I had signed in 1997, then I went to McLaren, Prince Charles came to open up the factory,” Hamilton explained.
“That day, I remember having my go-kart and I was sitting there and Prince Charles knelt down next to me and spoke to me… I was like, ‘hey, I’m Lewis Hamilton, one day I wanna be a Formula 1 World Champion’…”
Sir Lewis Hamilton
Flash forward to 2021 and Hamilton says that when he stood up from kneeling after the investiture ceremony, Charles said to him “it’s been a long time since I’ve seen you, you’ve come a long way”.

It’s a touching, personal, full-circle moment that shows that the royals aren’t completely heartless – and would have meant a lot to Hamilton, who rose from humble beginnings as a boy from Stevenage to become the greatest F1 driver ever.

On a lighter note, Lewis also joked during a recent interview with Graham Norton that he wishes that the old rules of investiture were still in effect, where knights could then knight others.
“I’d just go around knighting people,” he joked.

Thought you could only drink beer from a glass? Think again. In Australia, the shoey is fast becoming the new drinking craze. If you’ve seen someone performing a shoey before, it would likely have been at a live music event or even a sporting event – hello Daniel Ricciardo – or you may, if you live in Australia at least, have done one with your friends on a lads night out.
But what is a shoey, where did it originate and just exactly how do you perform one?
Here’s everything you need to know about the shoey.
What is a shoey?
As a quick disclaimer, if you’re very easily grossed out, then you may want to stop reading here. While some may find the shoey a source of unrivalled entertainment, others can (perhaps quite rightly) find it completely disgusting.
To do a shoey means to pour your drink, which in most cases will be beer – or in the case of Daniel Ricciardo, champagne, into your own shoe or someone else’s, and then quickly chug it down in one.
The shoey didn’t originate in Australia, but it has fast become a permanent fixture in popular culture.
Where did the shoey originate?
According to John R. Schmidt’s book On This Day in Chicago History, published in January 2014, the act of drinking champagne from a lady’s slipper was prevalent in the 20th century. It’s claimed the act of drinking from a shoe first happened in 1902 at the Everleigh Club, a brothel in Chicago.
A slipper of one of the dancers was said to have fallen onto the floor, only for it to be picked up by a member of the entourage of Prince Henry of Prussia. The entourage member is then said to have used it to drink champagne.
Other historical ties to the shoey suggest German soldiers would get new recruits to drink beer from a boot as part of an initiation process, and soldiers were also claimed to have drunk beer from their General’s boot following a victory in battle. This practice is said to be the influence behind the Bierstiefel boot-shaped glass being created.
Who has performed a shoey in Australia?
Formula One
While performing a shoey isn’t strictly limited to Australia, it is perhaps the most well-known country to encourage the act. Daniel Ricciardo is perhaps the most high-profile sporting figure to perform a shoey and is the man responsible for introducing it to Formula One.
Ricciardo has performed a shoey at the 2016 German Grand Prix following a podium finish, then again at the Belgian Grand Prix. He’s also performed one at the 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix, where he shared it with Max Verstappen, Nico Rosberg and Red Bull Team Principal, Christian Horner.
Daniel Ricciardo has now made it pretty much a guaranteed tradition that he will perform a shoey whenever he gets a podium finish. He continued to perform them at the 2015 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, along with Canadian racing driver Lance Stroll and at the 2020 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix in Italy, where both he and Lewis Hamilton drank champagne from both of Ricciardo’s shoes.

Following a McLaren 1-2 finish at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, Daniel Ricciardo, teammate Lando Norris and McLaren CEO Zak Brown all performed a shoey on the podium.
Daniel Ricciardo has also managed to enlist other high-profile celebrities to drink from a shoe, including Gerard Butler, who drank Red Bull from a shoe, as well as Patrick Stewart.
Other Motorsport

It’s not just Formula One where the shoey has proven popular. In 2015, David Reynolds, a Supercars racing driver, drank champagne from his shoe on the podium following his first non-endurance event victory.
Australian MotoGP rider Jack Miller drank champagne from his boot following his first win. Fellow MotoGP racing legend Valentino Rossi also performed a shoey at the San Marino race in 2016, becoming the first non-Australian to do so.
Scott McLaughlin, an IndyCar racing driver from New Zealand performed a shoey in February 2022 following his first win at St. Petersburg.
Other Sport
The shoey further became popular during the 2016 NRL season, particularly with the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks fans, who would regularly perform the shoey at games. When Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks went on to win the 2016 Premiership, several of the team’s players also performed shoeys.

Nedd Brockmann, who ran across Australia from Perth to Bondi Beach, Sydney in 47 days celebrated his achievement by performing a shoey in front of a raucous crowd at the finish line, in what is perhaps the most Australian thing to ever happen, ever.
