Airbnb Reveals The Most Lusted-After Listings Of 2017

2018 stands to be a big year for Airbnb. The vacation rental marketplace will celebrate its 10-year anniversary, and all signs point to it continuing its skyward trajectory.

But before we jump ahead to the year to come, Airbnb is taking a trip down memory lane with a look at the most popular listings of 2017. As part of its annual report, the company mapped out the most wish-listed rentals by country – and with more than four million rentals spanning 190 nations, combing through the candidates must have been a formidable task.

Regular readers may already be familiar with the listing that took the coveted top spot. The number one most sought-after property on Airbnb this year is a treehouse we’ve featured twice before, a stunning property in Atlanta, Georgia that regularly features in articles and Instagram feeds. Should it be booked out (and it probably will be), treehouses in Indonesia, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, the Bahamas, and the Philippines also made the list.

Not cut out for tree life? No worries, there are still plenty of unusual digs to add to your wish list. Try a traditional yurt in Kyrgyzstan or Germany, a lighthouse in Croatia, private islands in Norway and Belize, castles in England and Ireland, a cave house in Greece, or a double-decker school bus in Kenya.

If there’s one thing we’ve learned from looking at these incredible spaces, it’s that your dream getaway is guaranteed to be out there somewhere. You’ll find a few of our favourites above for your fantasising consideration, and can review the entire list of the world’s most desirable Airbnbs here.

Jeep's Most Ballistic SUV Officially Arrives In Australia
Jeep's Most Ballistic SUV Officially Arrives In Australia

Don’t let a 2.4-tonne weight rating fool you. Jeep’s latest and greatest SUV which lands in Australia today comes with a serious performance pedigree capable of putting sports cars to shame.

Slated as the world’s most powerful SUV, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk is the brand’s flagship model that can lay waste to the 0-100km/h sprint in just 3.7 seconds before topping out at 289km/h. That’s pretty impressive given it possesses the aerodynamic efficiency of a modern-day fridge.

This kind of ballistic performance is also unheard of in SUV territory (until the Lamborghini Urus arrives that is) and can be attributed to the car’s big 6.2-litre supercharged V8 engine which is borrowed over from the American muscle car known as the Dodge Charger Hellcat.

As the figures stand, the Trackhawk boasts 522kW of power and 868Nm of torque with drive being sent to all four wheels via a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission that speeds up shifts whilst maintaining daily drivability.

For owners who are keen for a spot of weekend racing in between picking up the kids, the Trackhawk comes with an electronic limited-slip rear differential so that the mountain of power can be properly harnessed for rapid cornering manoeuvres on the track.

For the straight line junkies, there’s launch control which tightens up everything from the engine to the transmission and the suspension so that the aforementioned performance figures can be achieved without breaking a sweat.

Five dynamic modes dominate the car’s behaviour depending on the road surface. Drivers can choose between Auto, Sport, Track, Snow and Tow, the latter of which has a load capacity of 2.9 tonnes.

A big car with big engine needs superior stopping power and this is where giant Brembo callipers come into play, the largest standard front brakes to ever be offered on a Jeep in fact.

Finally, there’s a heavily sculpted body and blacked out colour accents which lets people know that this is no ordinary family trolley. There are gaping holes on the bonnet, the fog lights in the front bar have been omitted to aid air flow and the wheels come in 20-inch titanium-finish for a more sinister aesthetic.

Deliveries of the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk to Australian customers will begin in March 2018 with a price tag of $134,900 before on-road costs.

If that’s out of the question, take a look at the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT we recently drove which is just as ballsy but without the supercar price tag.

Amazon Reveals The One Thing Australians Are Spending Big On
Amazon Reveals The One Thing Australians Are Spending Big On

It’s been a week since American e-commerce giant Amazon opened up its doors to the Australian market alongside fanfare, controversy and the threat of a retail revolution.

Your FIFA is somewhere in here

Whilst the latter might not have eventuated just yet, there’s fresh new data which outlines exactly what Australians are buying the most since the site’s launch down under. One word: tech. Australian consumers drove this category’s success with eight of the top ten products purchased falling into tech and gaming.

More specifically, the top four best-sellers in Australia were video games with FIFA 2018 for PS4 topping the list followed by Call Of Duty: WW2 PS4, Star Wars Battlefront II and the latest Nintendo Switch.

There were a few outliers with non-tech items such as a money guide book and cooking book making it into the top ten sellers. The Star Wars franchise saw a boost in sales with two products in the top ten that was likely due to the film’s world premiere today.

“In the run up to Christmas it is not surprising to see video games featuring prominently in the top ten. Outside of the top ten, Australians have been buying everything from daily essentials, including nappies and socks, to bigger purchases such as wearable tech and cameras,” said Rocco Braeuniger, Country Manager of Amazon Australia.

“We focus on the Australian customer and on long term success. With this in mind we continue to work hard to deliver great customer experience and fast delivery; and to provide customers with an ever-increasing selection of products at low prices.”

Things could be worse considering the horrendous fashion that’s on offer to Aussie men via the third-largest retailer in the world. See the full list of what Australians bought below.
  1. FIFA 18 PS4
  2. Call of Duty: WW2 PS4
  3. Star Wars Battlefront II PS4
  4. Nintendo Switch – Neon Blue and Red Joy-Con
  5. Strong 3M HDMI Cable
  6. Strong Wireless Bluetooth Speaker
  7. The Barefoot Investor: The Only Money Guide You’ll Ever Need
  8. 5 Ingredients – Quick & Easy Food
  9. Star Wars Battlefront II XBOX ONE
  10. Nintendo Switch – Gray Joy-Con

An Australian Study Confirms What Women Are Most Sexually Attracted To
An Australian Study Confirms What Women Are Most Sexually Attracted To

Surprise. A new Australian study has revealed confirmed that women are most sexually attracted to men who are of the strongest looking variety.

The data comes via Griffith University in Queensland where researchers surveyed 150 women to determine what influenced their attraction to men. After a comprehensive analysis it was determined that physical strength was the most sought after masculine trait. It doesn’t end there though.

The research even goes as far as concluding that male attractiveness boils down to three specific aspects: how physically strong he looks, how tall he is and how lean he is.

Whilst it may sound overtly superficial, there is some “science” behind it. One experiment involved showing full-length photos of men to female subjects who then had to assess their levels of physical strength against their perceived attractiveness. It was discovered that whilst some women preferred more feminine facial structures, almost all of them still desired those who looked physically stronger compared to weaker looking men.

In other words, the images which showed stronger men were also the ones that were crowned the most attractive.

On the quest to attracting the perfect mate, men must also keep in mind height and their levels of leanness, as these two factors accounted for 80 percent of a male’s overall appeal.

According to the researchers, this result reflects the “ancestral cues of a man’s fighting ability”, which highlights ancient mating rituals where women chose the strongest hunters that were able to provide for them.

Well then, maybe it’s time you stopped blaming society’s expectations and just focused your energy on getting big?

Here’s some help from James McAvoy, Josh Brolin and Zac Efron. Or just be a nice guy and the women will (apparently) love you just as much.

What Stress Is Doing To Your Body, According To An Performance Coach
What Stress Is Doing To Your Body, According To An Performance Coach

The flight or fight response is an automatic stress response that human beings have to facilitate survival.

In ancient times, our ancestors required this response in case they found themselves being chased by a lion or tiger.

In today’s society, we no longer have to run from tigers in the wild, but physiologically the same stress response can be triggered from everyday situations such as working long hours, meeting deadlines, performance reviews, over training, under eating or even road rage.

What Is Actually Happening When We Stress

When we are stressed our adrenal glands secrete cortisol.

While in certain situations, this is a necessity, over production of cortisol for extended periods of time, can be detrimental to an individual’s health and well-being, and can lead to weight gain or inability to lose weight, poor sleep, mental burnout, early ageing and poor immune function.

The good news, there are a number of strategies you can employ to help reduce, or keep your cortisol levels low.

Nourish Your Body With A Balanced Diet

What does a balanced diet look like? It is high in vegetables, lean proteins, slow release grains and healthy fats.

It should also contain foods high in fibre which help manage your sugar levels and keep your hormones balanced.

You should reduce your intake of artificial ingredients including sweetened beverages and foods high in refined sugar (think lollies, cakes and biscuits, for starters) which are going to have a negative impact on insulin and cortisol levels.

Match Intake To Output

If you are active, aim to have the majority of your carbohydrates before and after your training session to ensure you’re providing your body with what it needs before to perform and to recover.

Instead of eating carbohydrate based foods across the day, try having small regular amounts of slow release carbohydrates as they are beneficial for managing blood sugar levels.

Good quality carbohydrates can play an important role in your weight loss journey, but you need execute the distribution of them correctly.

Don’t Overtrain

There definitely is such a thing as overtraining. While you should be moving your body in some way every day, it is important to vary your training routine and allow
your body to rest.

Each person will have an individual threshold for what constitutes overtraining so it is a matter of listening to your body and also assessing your own results and energy levels.

Too much exercise can lead to injuries, exhaustion and hormonal imbalance.

Consider The Use Of Herbs For Help

In recent times, there has been some interest in a new ingredient called Bluenesse, which is a lemon balm extract (Melissa officinalis).

Preliminary research has indicated that Bluenesse may help provide beneficial physiological effects for mental health while simultaneously having calming and improved alertness effects.

Sleep Well

When the body is not under stress, cortisol levels are naturally increased upon wakening and decreased at night.

When the body is under stress, cortisol levels can be low across the day, and elevated at night. Finding ways to switch off, relax and have good sleep hygiene are all essential to a good night’s sleep.

Getting adequate sleep and regulating your sleep cycle is an important strategy in managing your cortisol levels

A Rolex x Supreme Collaboration Could Be Arriving In 2018
A Rolex x Supreme Collaboration Could Be Arriving In 2018

There are fresh rumours surfacing about a potential collaboration between Swiss watchmaker Rolex and major streetwear label, Supreme.

A match made in heaven or a watch to forget about?

The rumours first appeared via Instagram from user Jay Preme who has a proven track record for getting these sort of predictions right. According to Highsnobiety, the upcoming 2018 collaboration will see the arrival of special watches as well as apparel.

If this is true, then it would mark the second time that the two names have met, the first being five years ago with Bamford Watch Department redesigning a Rolex Submariner to a limited run of just 20 pieces at US$10,000 – $12,000 a pop – none of which were available to the general pubic at the time. That non-official Rolex piece would later go on to resell for US$,50,000. Not bad considering it had the words ‘FUCK EM’ stamped in red caps around the centre dial.

The rumoured collaboration this time around should be available to the public however there’s been no comment from Supreme or Rolex as of yet. We’ll keep you guys posted.

Qantas, Virgin Australia Are Banning Smart Luggage But Is It An Overreaction?
Qantas, Virgin Australia Are Banning Smart Luggage But Is It An Overreaction?

Smart luggage is revolutionising the way we travel. Brands like Raden, Bluesmart, and Instagram-favourite Away have re-imagined the suitcase for the modern traveller, equipping their high-tech bags with built-in chargers, scales, proximity sensors, and GPS location tracking for smoother, more seamless transit.

But the airport cool kids may soon be forced to leave their brainy bags at home. Several major US airlines have announced that certain kinds of smart luggage will no longer be welcome aboard their cargo holds.

Starting January 15, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, and Alaska Airlines will prohibit luggage with non-removable lithium-ion batteries over concerns they could spark fires. Similar policy updates are expected to be imminent from United and Southwest Airlines.

You may recall the exploding Samsung Galaxy Note 7 crisis of 2016, when the US Federal Aviation Administration deemed the devices hazardous and banned passengers from carrying them “on their person, in carry-on baggage, in checked baggage, or as cargo.” The FAA reports that lithium-ion battery fires occur about once every 10 days, and though it has yet to happen from smart bag batteries, airlines are taking a better-safe-than-sorry approach.

Passengers traveling with smart luggage will be asked to remove their lithium-ion batteries before flying (in same cases only in checked baggage, in other cases in both checked and cabin baggage). Manufacturers have been quick to share their thoughts on the move.

Bluesmart CEO Tomi Pierucci did not mince words in a note to TechCrunch. “The latest changes are an absolute travesty and is a huge step back not only for travel technology but it also presents an obstacle to streamlining and improving the way we all travel,” he said. “If they are going to ban smart bags, then they should be banning cameras, laptops, and phones being checked in or carried on. All of these have at some point caused issues with exploding batteries and yet it is smart bags and Bluesmart that is getting punished for this.”

Away CEO Steph Korey provided a more sanguine statement. “All Away Carry-Ons have batteries that can be easily removed. It’s a feature we thoughtfully designed, in part, because customers were asking for a charger that could be kept with them and used during flight,” he said.

If you plan to gift smart luggage this holiday season, be sure to choose a brand with a removable battery pack and try not to be disappointed when it’s rendered stupid in-flight.
