Men’s fragrances have come a long way since their ancient origins.
Once upon a time, pleasantly scented potions were a matter of necessity. One’s nose was constantly assaulted by the unpleasant odours of smoke, rotting food, and open sewers. And that was just the people – imagine what the actual sewers smelled like.
Today, colognes don’t perform such a purely practical purpose, that’s more or less deodorant’s responsibility, which leaves a much more interesting purpose for cologne: helping you get lucky. Pair the right scent with the right man and some kind of sorcery happens. If you don’t know what we’re talking about, you just haven’t met The One yet (scent, that is). No, but seriously, colognes and men’s fragrances can drastically improve your appeal, not just in the dating department but at work as well.
Join us on a journey through the history of men’s fragrances, from the world’s first recorded chemist to today’s billion-dollar industry.
A Scented History
Long before modern perfumery began in the late 19th century, perfumes existed in some of the earliest human civilizations. The art of crafting scents began in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt, and then was further refined by the Romans and Persians. At a glance:
Mesopotamia
The world’s first recorded chemist was Tapputi, a perfume maker mentioned in a cuneiform tablet from the 2nd millennium BC in Mesopotamia. She distilled flowers, oil, and calamus with other aromatics like cyprus and myrrh, added them to water, and then filtered the concoction several times.
Egypt
Having already invented glass, Egyptians began using rudimentary perfume bottles. Some scents were used for religious purposes, while others served cosmetic or medicinal functions. Myrrh, frankincense, peppermint, and rose were popular ingredients.
Cyprus
The oldest perfumery discovered to date was found on the island of Cyprus. During an excavation that began in 2004, an archaeological team unearthed evidence of a factory that existed 4,000 years ago. Its gargantuan size indicates that perfume manufacturing had reached an industrial scale.
Cologne Comes West
Perfumery came to Europe as early as the 14th century, due in part to developments in the Middle East. Islamic cultures perfected the extraction of fragrances through steam distillation and introduced new raw materials to the industry. With that, fragrances were ready to move west.
Hungary
The first European alcohol-based perfume was made in Hungary. According to legend, it was formulated at the command of a Hungarian Queen in the late 1400s and became known as “Hungary Water.”
Italy
Like many other arts, the art of perfumery prospered in Renaissance Italy. Rene the Florentine, Catherine de’ Medici’s personal perfumer, brought his knowledge of the craft to France in the 1600s and the country quickly became the European center of perfume manufacture.
France
Perfume fully came into its own when Louis XV took the throne in the 18th century. After Napoleon came to power, exorbitant expenditures for perfume continued. The diminutive would-be world leader would even reportedly dab on some fragrance before going into battle.
Rise Of The Masculine Fragrance
Though perfumery goes back thousands and thousands of years, men’s fragrance is a relatively recent development. It began in 1709 in Cologne, when Italian ex-pat Giovanni Maria Farina created a special scent to honour his new hometown. He gave the fragrance the town’s name and the catchy moniker stuck.
The fragrance was fresh, a welcome contrast to the heavy scents favoured at the time, with notes of citrus, flowers, and herbs. Farina’s list of customers expanded rapidly. Soon his Eau de Cologne was sold throughout Europe and became a royal and imperial favourite.
The eighth-generation Farina family still produces the pioneering unisex Eau de Cologne. Countless imitations have emerged over time, as have shady counterfeits, but it’s still possible to purchase the original fragrance and its sanctioned variations.
These days, in the ultimate sign of success, ‘cologne’ has transcended its meaning for a specific product to become a label for all men’s fragrances. New techniques and ingredients constantly change the industry, and a signature fragrance is no longer considered a luxury of the wealthy. With mass production in full effect, men’s fragrance is a booming billion-dollar business.
Just steer clear of the Sex Panther.

Despite your mates telling you “I can go whenever, wherever, forever”, chances are they’ve all fallen victim to some ‘technical issues’ when behind closed doors with a lady. Problems with your Johnson are more common than you might think. The University of Wisconsin has found an approximate correlation of 10 percent of people, per decade, are affected, i.e. 50 percent of 50-year-olds, 60 percent of 60-year-olds.This means that 20 percent of 20-year-olds and 30 percent of those aged between 30-40, will experience *whispers* erectile dysfunction, in their life. Yes, it’s a condition more common among the older gent, most commonly associated with various health conditions, but that doesn’t mean that young bucks are in fact, always dtf.And of course, there’s the other issue affecting men in the bedroom that’s a polar opposite: when they’re so excited by the situation they’ve found themself in, that they show it too early.Without having to resort to the little blue pill, what other remedies are there for guys to help alleviate any future bedroom blunders? So often a source of encyclopedic information, Reddit is one of the first places to turn to for guidance, before you have to make what we would all consider the personal walk of shame, to the GP.The general consensus is that you should take a break in your solo self-love antics. As great as it is, resisting the urge can allow you to reap the romantic rewards next time you find yourself under the covers. Moreover, the incredibly easy access to online pornography is another factor that can warp the male mind.A 2016 study by Wilson et al. found a positive connection between pornography and ED, and argued that it can have desensitising effects on young men because of the “hardcore” nature of it. It can cause men to become “dissatisfied with their own bodies, which in turn causes anxiety” when it comes to doing the dance of love. However, one since-deleted Reddit user account says this isn’t always the be-all and end-all solution.“Learn to take care of yourself when with your partner. It’s ok to get what you want and what you need to be aroused (consent permitting) with the confidence you’ll also please your partner.”“Try to focus on enjoyment, foreplay, stuff that doesn’t rely on being hard to get the job done.”To this end, performance anxiety is a common factor for most guys who experience half-mast. If it happens once, it will happen again, right?“Sounds like this issue is only triggered by stress which is super normal at any age”, says PigeonsOnYourBalcony.
“Resolving stressful issues, getting more sleep and improving your diet will make you feel better in general and improve your ED issue.”
“Talk to your girlfriend (or partner) about how your stress is affecting you and make sure she understands what triggers it and how this makes you feel. That way she’ll understand this is a biological issue and she won’t guilt you or feel bad about a very common and temporary issue.”Many guys agree that performance anxiety can have an effect on your member, but if it happens, they urge you not to stress. “The way to break out of this is to stop thinking about it so much.” says another user.“If you become aroused, great, but if you don’t, no biggie. Use your hands or your mouth, do other things with her. If you get turned on later in the session, great.”
“The healthiest way for you to respond [to ED] is to shrug and move on.”
Another thing to try if you want to become the casanova you feel you’re destined to be is to cut out smoking (if you do) and cut down on drinking. Both can have damaging effects on the body, particularly below the belt. Many users on Reddit noted that they were able to perform far better after ditching one or both.Ultimately, the best thing to do if any technical issues arise – or don’t, as the case may be – is to not stress. Stressing will only cause further issues. Use the other tools bestowed upon you and show your lady you’re not a selfish lover.

It takes time and commitment to build a God-like body. You need to change up your routine every so often so keep the muscles on their toes, and train several times a week. If you’re stuck for ideas of what to try next time you’re in the gym, this kettlebell circuit could be just the thing to give you washboard abs, bulging biceps and boulder shoulders.
It comes from personal trainer, model, and all-round nice guy Lachie Brycki. The Instagram influencer posts regular workout videos on his page and on his stories, and he provides clear step-by-step instructions to ensure you get the technique right to help avoid injury. This kettlebell circuit is particularly effective because you can perform it either at the gym, or at home, so there should be no excuse to shy away from giving it a go.
To start, you’ll need to get two kettlebells of equal weight. It’s wise to make sure they’re not too heavy, because you’ll be carrying out six exercises, one after the other, to complete a full circuit. The aim is to complete the circuit 4-5 times. You should also make sure you warm your body up and activate your muscles before diving in.
Upright Rows – 12 Reps
Hold the kettlebells in front of you with a pronated (overhand) grip. Lift your arms up so that your shoulders and elbows are parallel with the floor, and the kettlebells are close to your pecs. This move will work your shoulders, traps and upper back.
Bent-Over Row – 12 Reps
Bend your knees and your back so that you’re looking at the floor. Lift the kettlebells up, keeping your elbows close to the body. This move targets the lat muscles and the rhomboids in your upper back. You can try switching between lifting the KBs close to your chest, or close to your waist, to target different muscle groups.
Side Raises – 12 Reps
Hold the kettlebells by your side and lift outwards so that your whole arm is straight as can be. This is another shoulder blaster move, working the deltoids in particular, but also works the upper back.
Tricep Extension – 12 Reps
Hang the kettlebells behind you and lift them up above your head using your forearms. Be sure to keep your triceps as locked in position as possible.
Hammer Curl – 10 Reps
Keep your elbows close to your body and your upper arm look in position. Using a neutral grip, lift the kettlebells so that they’re 90-degrees to the floor. This move primarily targets the biceps and forearms, but has some effect on the traps, too.
Raised Pushups – 12 Reps
Get into a wide stance pushup position, but instead of putting your hands on the ground, grip the kettlebells instead. This is a great move to carry out, as it works the shoulders, lower chest, triceps and back.
Carrying out just one full circuit should have you feeling the burn. Take a few minutes rest and drink some water before tackling it another three or four times.
Your Thor body awaits.

Have you ever tried to show photos and videos from your phone on the big screen TV for all your family to see? If you have, you’ve probably noticed everyone has to move that little bit closer to the screen, because your vertically-aligned phone screen doesn’t marry up with the widescreen nature of the beast hanging on your wall. Annoying, right? But for every problem, there’s a solution, and Samsung has just come up with a doozy. It’s called ‘The Sero’, and it’s a 47-inch (one size only for now) 4K QLED TV that can rotate a full 90-degrees so you can stream, cast and mirror content from your phone and view it as it was meant to be seen. Just, you know, much bigger. It sounds completely bonkers, but in a world where we’re foldable and bendable screens are becoming the norm, a rotating screen shouldn’t seem that farfetched. Samsung uncoincidentally decided to show off The Sero – Korean for vertical – at the annual Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, which took place from the 7th to 10th of January 2020.
View this post on Instagram
It’s also been unveiled at a time where more and more of us are bending our necks down to be engrossed with content from Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and whatever other new platforms the kids are into these days. It’s, therefore, no surprise that the target market for The Sero is Generation Z.We can sort of understand why Samsung has created The Sero in the first place. If you’ve ever tried to cast content from your phone to your TV – photos, and videos of a recent holiday, for example – then you’ll be presented with a vertical image in the centre of the screen, with vast areas of darkness either side. The Sero negates such a first world problem – iPhone owners will, unfortunately, need to rotate the screen via the remote, Android owners get the luxury of automatic rotation. And just because Samsung has put all its effort into creating a TV for the millennial masses, it hasn’t scrimped on the specs. You’re still getting a 4K QLED TV, which means colours, contrast, and brightness should all be some of the best around. Samsung itself already produces 8K TVs, but with content pretty scarce right now, 4K is the way to go.The Sero is currently priced at 1.89m KRW (US$1,600/AU$2,300) in its homeland of Korea – where it has been available for some time – but Samsung has confirmed it will make its way to the US and UK. An Australian release is yet to be confirmed.

“Alexa, find me a road that will be empty and free of police so I can drive flat out at 200mph.”While we would never condone such a query, it will soon be possible to ask. That’s because retail behemoth Amazon used CES 2020 – the annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas – to announce its terribly well-spoken voice-assistant Alexa, will be available as an in-car voice-assistant system in the Lamborghini Huracán Evo before the year is out.But while such a supercar is an aspirational goal for many a man, we’re more likely to spend the rest of our lives driving an ordinary four-door saloon. But does that mean we’ll be left out when it comes to Amazon’s plans for conquering the in-car arena?https://www.instagram.com/p/B7BW2SfqQ2z/Going hands-free in the car isn’t a choice, it’s a necessity. Australia has recently introduced cameras to catch motorists using their devices when driving. In the first week of going live, the cameras snapped over 3,000 drivers using their phones at the wheel. We want to do more than make and receive phone calls at the wheel. That’s so five years ago. Today, we want to be able to control music, send messages or pull up navigation directions.Apple and Google already have their own in-car systems to tackle these issues with CarPlay and Android Auto, respectively. Amazon is, therefore, going to try and muscle its way in on an already crowded arena. The company does already have the Echo Auto available as an aftermarket addition (in the US, at least), but its new Alexa-powered in-car system – appropriately called Alexa Auto – will be embedded into the car itself – like its rivals – so you’ll be able to use it with steering wheel controls, for example.By choosing Lamborghini as the first recipient, Amazon is clearly showing its intent for its fledging system. It wants to bypass the Average Joe on the road and go straight for the bigwigs, initially, at least. Select Lamborghinis are already available with Apple’s CarPlay system, so by choosing Alexa for the Huracán EVO, the Italian supercar could have given away how effective Amazon’s offering is, and how commonplace it could soon become. While Lambo will get the system first, several other car companies were announced as future partners. These include Ford, Audi, Lexus, Seat, Toyota and Volkswagen. It, therefore, shouldn’t be too long before we can ask Alexa to phone a friend, change a playlist or get directions to the shops. But it’s the further smart integration that should have drivers seriously considering their next car purchase. That’s because Alexa has been available as a smart-home assistant for many years, allowing us to control all manner of devices in our homes, be it lighting, heating or even the kettle. With Alexa built into our cars, we’ll be able to ask her to open the garage door, turn the TV on to a particular channel, set the lighting and even start dinner cooking (assuming it’s already in the oven), all before we get home. It’s yet another small step towards the ultimate takeover of mankind by machine à la HAL from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

It’s not new but it’s now official: the devious dating trend that has existed for millennia now has a name: ‘eclipsing.’ And even though your parents would disapprove of your Instagram nude sharing and your Elizabethan ancestors would be scandalised by your grandparent’s knee touching, ‘eclipsing’ is the one flirting technique that has remained constant through the ages. But what the heck is it?Essentially, ‘eclipsing’ is adopting the interests of someone you’re dating and pretending you like those activities. According to the Sydney Morning Herald (who got its data from online dating app surveys) “48 per cent have dated someone who did this, while 45 per cent of singles admit to having done it.”Heidi Gee, a couples counsellor and dating coach, echoed this sentiment, telling D’Marge “I think we’ve all done this [eclipsing].”While ‘eclipsing’ is a technique as old as time, it’s still a tough tightrope to walk. Go too far and you’ll look like a creep (see: the Netflix special, You). But think yourself entirely above ‘eclipsing’ and you may come off as abrasive and boring, and your first Tinder date may not lead to a second. To counteract this, Heidi says you ought to do your research before ‘eclipsing’ “so you don’t look like an idiot” and understand the limits to what you can pretend to enjoy being into (you’re unlikely to be able to pick up skydiving or surfing in a couple of days, for instance, and you might regret pretending to be into heavy metal when bae books you into a three-day festival).Heidi also tells us that it’s not really necessary to pick up your newfound love interest’s hobbies yourself, often it’s enough (even preferable, and more honest) to just show genuine interest and “ask them questions on the topic” instead. So unless you’re a certified polymath, don’t claim to be a chess grandmaster or fluent in French.Happy dating.

Each continent, and in many ways, each country, has its own fashion style. Californians gravitate towards casual denim, retro t-shirts and all-white outfit combos; Londoners appreciate fine tailoring, and the Parisians have a flair for colours, layers and accessories.Hollywood megastar Will Smith shows us exactly how to pull off the latter, as he stepped out in Paris for a photocall for his latest movie Bad Boys For Life on January the 6th 2020. While he’s included lashings of colour in his Paris get up, The Fresh Prince manages to put an American twist, making it simple for anyone to replicate themselves. The first box ticked on Will’s Parisian-inspired outfit is his black leather biker jacket. While the Breton-bashers tend to pair theirs with figure-hugging denim, Will opts for a more casual approach. His jacket, however, fits like a glove: it’s not too boxy, nor too relaxed.Next off the list is his inclusion of colour. Again, this is where Will’s American routes shine through. Parisians tend to favour pastel hues, compared to bold, in-your-face colours. Bold colours might be reserved for accessories to add a pop to an outfit, but that would likely be as far as it goes. Will’s bright blue sweatpants serve as a nod to le Paris, but the relaxed nature screams Philadelphia.Parisian men aren’t all minimalistic, either. They like to dabble with patterns, which is why Will’s geometric pattern sweater is perfect to beat the winter chill. And of course, no French ensemble would be complete without a silk scarf. Will’s colour-matching blue neckwear adds the final cerise on top of this gâteau. The best thing about Will’s outfit? It wouldn’t look out of place on the streets of New York, London or even Sydney or Melbourne when the mercury takes a dive.

LW: Some clever sod recently told me that buying an engagement ring at auction is not such a silly idea, is this right?
HS: The range at auction, both size and design is unsurpassable. I haven’t seen a retail alternative that offers designer pieces, antique pieces and the variation of stone size and quality all in the one location. Buying at auction has many benefits aside from the commonly known fact that it is incredibly cost-effective.
LW: What are some of the benefits?
HS: Put simply, if the purchaser does their research they will get much better quality and if size matters, they can secure a larger stone at auction than if they were to buy a similar item in the retail market.
LW: What should our readers be looking out for?
HS: They should lookout for good design, stone quality and of course value. I also believe provenance plays an important role; some pieces have a great story, quite often items for auction can be from individuals of great iconic style.
LW: What budgets do your auctions cater for?
HS: Sotheby’s Australia caters for a broad range of budgets. In our upcoming auction this Wednesday evening for example, we have pieces ranging from $500 dollars right up to $200,000 plus.
LW: How do we know we’re not buying a CZ when we’re shopping for diamonds?
HS: At Sotheby’s Australia, we guarantee everything we sell as per the catalogue.
LW: How does one go about buying a piece of jewellery at auction?
HS: The best start is to study the catalogue online, then visit the scheduled Melbourne or Sydney exhibitions where all items are available to look at, hold and try on. I would then recommend that people engage with our experts who are present and ask any questions.I really enjoy talking to people about each of the individual pieces, whether about the size of a stone, the quality, the designer or even the provenance. After going through that exciting process (with or without your potential fiancée), then it’s just a case of deciding how much you’d like to bid for each of the items you like. Easy!
LW: With your auction coming up this Wednesday what are some key pieces our readers should be looking out for?
HS: If you’re looking for an engagement ring, then I highly recommend our catalogue cover lots – lot 185, lot 186 and lot 187. These three lots vary in estimated selling ranges from $6,000 to $95,000 and my wife would be happy with any (or all) of them. There are also really interesting lots at the more affordable end of the sale, for example, there is an 18ct gold and diamond ring that features a brilliant-cut diamond weighing 2.10 carats that has a selling range estimate of just $1,000 to $1,500. There really is something for everyone at this auction.
LW: Top tips for getting the piece you want?
HS: Keep your hand in the air! No seriously, I believe it’s important to be assertive with your bidding when you really want something. If the auctioneer knows you’re interested, they’ll keep coming back to you and it’s definitely a good idea to declare yourself as a strong and committed contender to the lot item/s that you are interested in.
