There’s gangsters, and then there’s the yakuza.Japan’s organised criminals make the Mafia look like amateurs in comparison. Described by academics as being some of “the most sophisticated and wealthiest criminal organisations” in the world, yakuza syndicates like the Yamaguchi-gumi and the Sumiyoshi-kai are particularly fearsome, with their own unique rituals, code of honour, and intense brutality.Needless to say, yakuza bosses (known as oyabun, or family heads) aren’t the kind of guys you want to mess around. They demand nothing but the absolute best – and that holds true for their rides, too. In Japan, there’s only one choice of automobile for the man who’s really made it in life, whether that’s a CEO, a drug dealer or the Emperor of Japan. That car? The Toyota Century: a car so refined and so luxurious that they make a Rolls-Royce look like a Kia in comparison. Now, the prospect of a gaijin becoming a yakuza boss is less likely than Donald Trump expressing humility. Thankfully, you can do the next best thing and buy one of their cars. Tokyo Prestige, an auto dealer based in Adelaide who specialises in rare Japanese imports, have just announced they’ve got a 2001 Toyota Century up for sale. A land yacht to beat all land yachts, this is one special whip – and tastier than a hot bowl of ramen on a cold Hokkaido night.

Quarantining Australians in Perth have been surprised to find themselves staying in the same hotel as normal guests.
ABC’s 7.30 program recently spoke to travellers staying at the Hyatt Regency Perth, some of whom are amazed this is being allowed to happen.
One of them, James Whitehouse, “returned from the UK after attending his father’s funeral and has nearly finished his mandatory stay on Level 2 of the Hyatt Regency,” (ABC).
He claims to have been alerted to the presence of ordinary guests when he saw patrons on the floor below him had access to a balcony and fresh air.
He told 7.30 he rang reception to ask why. He was told they were regular paying guests.
“If I was the paying customer I would not be taking that risk,” Mr Whitehouse told 7.30.
“I’m amazed the hotel’s been allowed to do that by the government.”
“I thought the whole idea was that we were in isolation.”
This is not the first time an Australian in quarantine has noticed this. “I noticed we had a view of the hotel pool, but doubted I would see any signs of life there. I was wrong,” The Age journalist Emily Woods wrote in an article published on February the 2nd, 2021, for the Sydney Morning Herald.
“The next morning the pool was full of families with kids diving into the pool, and couples sun-lounging. I couldn’t believe there were normal guests staying at our hotel. I went on the Hyatt website and found they were offering discounted packages for stays over Christmas and New Year’s Eve.”

“A few minutes to midnight on our last night, my partner and I became annoyed by loud, booming music, enough to vibrate the windows and floor of our room. We must have a new neighbour, I reasoned, and called guest services, hoping a quick word about the offending room would be the end of it. ‘I will speak to them,’ the person on the end of the phone said. Two minutes later, a call back from guest services: ‘It’s an event at the hotel, but it will be ending soon,’ the person told me. An event at a quarantine hotel?”
Martine J McCracken, whose family was in hotel quarantine in Perth in early January, told DMARGE, “We were there [in hotel quarantine, at Hyatt Regency Perth] from the 2nd of January to the 16th of January.”
“We had a room on a lower floor with not much of a view, but I remember being able to see the hotel pool in the reflection of an office building and people swimming around. It looked so nice and made us feel a little jealous. Also made us feel a little sorry for our kids.”
“One of the nights there was also an event on in the hotel where they played music until quite late. It didn’t bother us much, however, it actually felt more weird that people would be out in what we assumed was a large group as it’s been a long time since that was the case for us.”
Not everyone saw ‘normal’ guests during their stay, however. One guest, Sheridan Hepburn, told DMARGE she quarantined at the Hyatt Regency Perth in the last week of August and the first week of September 2020, “had a view of the pool” and “never saw any other guests.”
Perhaps it is a new phenomenon?
As of February the 9th, 2021, 7.30, the ABC reports, “understands Levels 1 and 9 of the Hyatt Regency are available to the public, while levels 2 through to 8 are for returned travellers.”
“Members of the public are also welcome to book rooms at the Pan Pacific Perth, another quarantine hotel.”
A WA Health spokesperson has confirmed two Perth quarantine hotels were open to the public, saying both were required to “meet strict requirements” (such as employing separate kitchen staff) and ensure that “the hotel is clearly divided into two very separate areas,” according to the ABC.
View this post on Instagram
According to the ABC, WA Premier Mark McGowan said the use of quarantine hotels by members of the public had been “queried at length” with medical advisors, and the advice was that “it is not a risk.”
DMARGE also spoke with Lauren Wilson, a psychology student at UWA, who told us she was on “staycation” at the Hyatt Regency Perth from the 28th to the 30th of January, to get her take on what it was like being a regular guest at a hotel which is also being used for quarantine.
“My husband had credits to use so we decided to go to the Hyatt. He do [knew] ahead of time that it was a corentin [quarantine] hotel but we weren’t sure how it was actually gonna work out. We got there and the only levels that the public could stay on were the 1st level and the 9th level. The other levels in between were for people that were Quarantine. There are 4 guards on each level the way that the hotel is laid out made it so that there was one guard per hallway. They looked really bored.”
“When you got onto the Elevator you could only press level one and level 9 and all the other floors wouldn’t light up if you pressed those buttons. The pool was still open and they still had pool service for food and drinks but it was kind of weird because there would be people just staring down at you swimming wishing they were there.”
“Overall It was a great little staycation it was super quiet and it felt like we had the hotel to ourselves.”
Though Perth is now coming out of last week’s lockdown, various restrictions will remain in place until February the 14th.
“All residents must continue to wear masks while outside their homes except for during vigorous outdoor exercise,” PerthNow reports.
In addition, “A 20-person limit will be imposed on all private indoor gatherings, while a four square metre rule and a cap of 150 attendees will apply to hospitality and retail venues and weddings.”
“Restaurants, pubs and bars can only have seated service and only essential travel is permitted in and out of the combined restricted zone.”
Finally, “Western Australia will also keep its border restrictions in place for both NSW and Victoria,” and “travellers from those regions are required to isolate for 14 days and present for a coronavirus test on day 11.”
Health Minister Roger Cook said WA was in a good place after moving “quickly and decisively” to crush the outbreak.
this fried my brain so hard I couldn’t compose a tweet about it
— Adam (@kels_316) February 9, 2021
Cook said health officials were continuing to hunt for more contacts of the hotel security guard whose testing positive of Covid-19 prompted the lockdown, “with almost all of those identified so far returning negative COVID-19 results,” according to PerthNow.
“Authorities have identified 528 people linked in some way to the guard, who unwittingly roamed the streets of Perth while infectious,” PerthNow reported on Monday.
“So far 522 have tested negative with just six waiting on test results.”
However, as reports emerge of returning travellers staying in the same hotels as ordinary guests, some Western Australia residents (see above) remain concerned.

The NBA has always attracted its fair share of interesting characters.Take Dennis Rodman, whose head looks like a pincushion and who’s bizarrely mates with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-Un; Darryl Dawkins, who claimed he was actually an alien from “the planet Lovetron”; or Metta World Peace, who not only had a habit of swigging luxurious French cognac during halftime at games but also used to call himself Metta World Peace. The Brooklyn Nets’ Kyrie Irving might not be quite as weird as some other NBA players but he’s certainly an individual. Where other basketball players dive head-first into the ‘baller’ lifestyle, Irving is a bit of a hippie. A sax-playing, plant-based diet following, spiritual sort of guy, he’s also a passionate activist, drawing upon his unique heritage as a half-indigenous, half-African-American. Many basketball fans don’t take his peace quest vibes very seriously – but his skill on the court is indisputable. As are his style bona fides, apparently. The 28-year-old was spotted before the Nets’ game against the Philadelphia 76ers on the weekend wearing a rather inspired outfit: an Acne Studios jacket, Travis Scott x Nike Air Jordan 1s and some incredibly ‘stacked’ raw denim jeans from cult streetwear brand Vale Forever. That’s to say nothing of his walking stick…

Pain is weakness leaving the body. Wimps don’t win. Discomfort is your friend. Explosive diarrhea is an acceptable price to pay for boosting your energy levels. Though some see Joe Rogan as the Gwyneth Paltrow of Men, others latch onto his every word. What’s not up for debate is that the iconic 53-year-old podcast host, comedian, and mixed martial arts commentator is influential. It’s not just his listeners’ brains Rogan attempts to stretch, either. It’s also their bodies. Rogan has for years promoted a tough-love approach to fitness, imploring his fans to smash out more workouts, being a huge proponent of all the physical, mental and emotional benefits associated with pumping iron. But when you work out like a demon, you tend to get tight. On that note: Rogan today has dropped a short piece of advice to his followers on Instagram: “loosen up, f*ckers.” A much needed public service announcement if there ever was one (rare is the modern knowledge worker who isn’t too tight around the hips and groin).

Doing a stretch a ballerina might be proud of, Rogan puts his money where his groin is, sitting legs splayed, torso down, head up, phone in hand to capture the moment, in what appears to be his home gym.Actor/Athlete/Artist Emilien de Falco commented, “Bloodsport” on the post. Trainer Ben Bruno wrote, “Damn, that’s impressive. I’d tear my groin doing that.”“Whoever you’re FaceTiming is scared as fuck!” another witty user wrote.“Leading by example,” mixed martial artist Alain Ngalani commented. If this has inspired you, this is how flexible you can get in just two weeks, according to an expert. We’ll stretch to that.

As tempting as it may be to ditch your business shirt for baggy casual pieces after a week of wearing suits, certain calendar events on the weekend (and even post-work) will require you to dress sharp.
However, putting the ‘smart’ in smart casual need not involve the typical collared shirt. With menswear getting more adventurous and dress codes dressing down a little, these five pairings are proof you can certainly look damn fine this season, without even wearing a shirt. But we don’t mean topless, of course.

In This Story…
Breaking It Down
Going shirtless does require certain outfit additions to chic-up your pared-back top. Your look needs to include some sort of tailoring — be it, a blazer or luxury casual jacket and tapered trouser or jean. Emphasis should be placed on the fabric and cut of the pieces too, ensuring the fit be snug (never tight) and the colour palette be tasteful and classic — neutrals and traditional prints like stripes and check are all winners.
Finally, footwear will interchange depending on the occasion. Minimal leather sneakers or suede loafers for a more casual interpretation of smart, while a brogue or derby is much better for dressier events — always with socks.
RELATED: How To Wear Shoes Without Socks
T-Shirt & Suit

When the weather warms up, popping a t-shirt under your suit blazer keeps you cool, without limiting the smartness of your look. A t-shirt pairs chic-ly with a more traditional dark wool, two piece suit and statement peak lapel, as well as a classic cotton blazer and chino combination.
Think about contrasting the layer underneath. Charcoal suit? Try a t-shirt in white, or a Breton stripe. Light-coloured suit? Go darker with a dark green tee or burgundy polo shirt. Make sure the tee is basic — no garish graphic prints — and is fitted, so it doesn’t add unsightly bulk beneath the jacket.
For a smarter result, tuck your tee into your suit trousers, eschewing the belt for cleaner finish.
T-Shirt & Bomber Jacket

A step down from the suit, the bomber jacket’s utilitarian heritage makes it a smart casual contender, even with a t-shirt. The key here is sticking to a snug fit on the shoulder, with the jacket’s shape draping naturally down the torso, before a neat crop at the waists (nothing longline or oversized).
And look to matte fabric jackets — think black leather, brown suede or a dense cotton version in a neutral hue — nothing satiny and sports-esque to maintain that dressy vibe. Complete the look with a pair of minimal trainers or sophisticated suede loafers.
Knitwear & Trousers

Temperature dropped? Don’t sweat it. The humble sweater has had a reworking in recent seasons, with plenty of slim fit, quality made ones to pick from. Far from gym-inspired, look to a knitted wool/cashmere blend or a loopback cotton varitety with a simple crew or v-neck.
Keeping it smart, pair the sweater with tailored chinos or trouser separates, depending on the ocassion, working texture into the outfit with a grainy wool or cotton twill.
RELATED: Smart Ways To Wear A Sweater
Roll Neck & Blazer

Want a more streamline, Euro-inspired alternative to the stuffy shirt and tie? Look to the roll neck. Worn with classic tailoring, it’s a far less fussy and more comfortable meat layer under a blazer. Or try layering one under a biker jacket for a faultless high-low combination.
Stick to a fine gauge variety — one that’s lightweight and snug, adhering to the quality fabric rules once more: cashmere, wool or pima cotton for something that’s soft and durable. This fine weight option may not be so great for the larger gent. Got a belly? Stick with a denser sweater, which can be worn roomier and is thus, more forgiving on a protruding tummy.
RELATED: How To Dress If You Suffer From ‘Sloppy Rig’ Syndrome
Tanks & Tailoring

Like your favourite tee, the tank is an even better summery option as a layer under a jacket. It should fall just below your belt line and hang about half an inch away from your body, so not hug your torso tightly. For ‘smart’ purposes keep the straps wide, and the neck line crew or scoop, so it looks like a tee when under a linen blazer. Adding a buttoned waistcoat, like Justin O’Shea will keep it smarter still.
Again, fabrication and quality is everything. Your tech-fabric gym singlet won’t cut it here; nor will a cheap poly version found in most fast-fashion stores. If you’re going to wear one under your suit, stick to soft cotton and a gauge that is thick enough so that any nipple outlines will be obscured. Don’t be rude.

Just yesterday we saw Super Bowl LV play out in dramatic fashion in Florida, with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers convincingly triumphing over the Kansas City Chiefs with a final score of 31-9.In many ways, the game was a showdown between two men – each teams’ quarterbacks. The Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes, a rising star and previously-reigning Super Bowl MVP, was massively shown up by Tom Brady, who moved to the Bucs just last year after nearly two decades with the New England Patriots. The game was an absolute coup for Brady. Many commentators had suggested that his move to the Bucs at the age of 43 signalled the end of his career, but they couldn’t have been more wrong. Brady’s unparalleled ability to rally a team around him has led many other commentators to marvel at how he almost ‘picked a team to take to the Super Bowl’; his talent is just so prodigious. Not content to trounce Mahomes on the field, Brady also beat the 25-year-old Mahomes in the pre-game style stakes. Comparing the two men’s outfits speaks volumes about their different characters, and shows that despite Brady’s age, he’s still got it, whether we’re talking fashion or forward passes.
View this post on Instagram
Firstly, let’s look at Brady’s outfit. Where other NFL players like to dress pretty outrageously (take Brady’s replacement at the Pats, Cam Newton, or Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr), Brady keeps things crisp and simple with a tan Tom Ford bomber jacket, light chinos and simple leather sneakers. It’s a timeless, stylish, age-appropriate look that demonstrates that age-old adage: less is more.RELATED: ‘All American’ Style Tipped To Take 2021 By StormHe also brought the horological heat, rocking his one-of-one IWC Schaffhausen Big Pilot that Richemont chairman Johann Rupert gave him back in 2016 to commemorate his Super Bowl LI victory. If Brady’s the GOAT, then we can’t think of a more GOAT-worthy watch. Then, look at Mahomes’ pre-game outfit. It’s much more flashy: a tailored suit with matching waistcoat; Gucci matched luggage, a bright red tie and oxfords which match with his backpack… It’s a lot to take in. The shoes without socks look is a bit amateurish, and the coordinated pops of colour are certainly eye-catching but we’re not a huge fan.
View this post on Instagram
Mahomes is somewhat redeemed by his admirable choice in watch – a Vacheron Constantin Overseas Chronograph. It’s an inspired departure from form for a man who normally rocks rainbow-coloured Rolex Daytonas and celebrity cliches like Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks. Credit where credit’s due: Mahomes has come a long way when it comes to dressing himself, particularly when you look back on the hypebeast skivvies he wore last Super Bowl. But he just can’t beat Brady, either with a pigskin or with fashion poise. Can’t blame him though – it’s a hard task. The 2021 NFL season is scheduled to begin on September 9th, presumably at Raymond James Stadium: the Bucs’ home turf, and the same place Super Bowl LV was held. That a Super Bowl was held at a contending team’s home stadium was an anomaly, as the NFL tends to prefer a neutral location, but the host selection process takes place years in advance. Their win at Super Bowl LV means the Bucs are the first team in NFL history to win a Super Bowl on home soil.

When you think of big bloated boats, sleek white vessels, supermodels, spas, Oligarchs and – of course – watching Formula 1 on TV whilst striding away on an onboard treadmill, places like Monaco, Croatia, Saint-Tropez and Cannes probably spring to mind.
However, unless you’ve been living in an underground bunker for the last 12 months, you’ll know a pandemic has thrown the world into turmoil. The upshot? Judging by the 2020 summer season, there’s a new centre of the luxury yachting universe, and it’s none of the above.
View this post on Instagram
According to Istanbul-based luxury yacht manager Candaş Balci, Turkey last year enjoyed one of the busiest yachting seasons in the Mediterranean. That’s right: though the old guard of luxury and superyacht destinations like Saint-Tropez or Monaco will inevitably make a come back when the time is right, they are relatively quiet right now.
View this post on Instagram
“Because of the pandemic… it has been crowded in Turkey,” Balci told DMARGE, speaking about last year’s summer season.
“Big numbers of yachts coming to Turkey.”
“This year – when Europe closed its doors to Russia and the Middle East they [yacht owners from those destinations] chose Turkey for their yachts,” Balci told DMARGE in 2020.
View this post on Instagram
The scene, Balci says, was, “More fun, with fewer people here than there would typically be in Europe’s hotspots.”
“[The] end of year [saw] very crowded restaurants.”
“People enjoyed it but, if they could at [the] end go to Europe or the Adriatic etc. if they open ports.”
Balci also told DMARGE there have been “big enquiries about yacht management.”
View this post on Instagram
Balci said this could be because certain people, who might usually fly somewhere in a private jet and then stay in a villa on the French Riviera, for instance, are choosing to stay on a luxury yacht in Turkey.
“Yachts located in Turkey could go [to the] Greek Islands etc,” Balci told us, but “Turkish yacht owners – many of them – stayed in Turkish bays.”
As for 2021, Balci expects a “similar season.”
“EU restrictions still continue to yes we are still expecting a busy season in Turkey [in 2021].”
It’s not just the waters of Turkey seeing action. As DMARGE reported last year, a rather lavish Turkish hotel (prices start at 600 AUD a night), Calista Luxury Resort, is getting back in the swing of things too, with guests’ Instagram posts providing us with a sneak peek into what like is currently like at the 5-star luxury Mediterranean resort.
View this post on Instagram
Travellers have shared images and videos of everything from four-wheel drive expeditions and boating adventures, to relaxing in the resort.
Suffice to say: the experience is tempting not only for wealthy local residents but overseas tourists (the ones who are permitted to leave their country and visit, anyway). As The Sun reported last year, holidays to Turkey were remarkably cheap, costing British tourists less as the local currency fell.
View this post on Instagram
As Balci has previously told DMARGE, once The Spicy Cough situation eases, the first places he believes The Super Rich will flock to are: the south of France, Italy, Ibiza, Sardinia and Saint-Tropez.
“For one or two years they will stay locally on the Turkish coasts, Greek Islands maybe [which has a more relaxed policy currently in place for visitors]… after that – very busy days for Ibiza and Saint-Tropez.”
Cannes, Antibes, Portofino, and Monaco are on Candaş’ clients hit lists too.

Ah Melbourne, you unpredictable wildebeest. Whilst locals worship it as Australia’s epicentre of fashion, food and art, they often forget that it’s also near-impossible to dress accordingly for thanks to its notorious four-seasons-in-a-day.
Challenge accepted. We hit up stylist Jeff Lack to find out exactly how men should dress for Melbourne’s sporadic climate. It’s not about wearing more or less, but being strategic with layers so that you’re equipped to take on anything from a cold snap to a mild heat wave without looking out of place.
In This Story…
One Colour To Rule Them All

“Known for it’s many varieties of black clothing Melbourne is all about elegant, chic styling,” explains resident stylist Jeff Lack.
The idea behind utilising the classic hue is reflective of the city’s thriving culture which allows men to combine looks without trying too hard – similar to the cool cats of New York City without the pretentiousness.
“Even when colour is added, black underpins the ensemble.” – Jeff Lack
“Even when colour is added, black underpins the ensemble. White, cement and tan are often accomplices,” adds Lack.
“Layers are very important as the weather changes so rapidly, you must be prepared.”
So take a leaf out of Melbourne’s classic style heritage and try some of these pieces this season. It’s guaranteed to get you through whatever the city throws at you.
The Right Footwear

Boots and sneakers are a must for any man venturing about Melbourne town. Chelsea boots never really went out of fashion and in this case they can also double as a practical barrier for unexpected hits of rain or cold snaps.
Remember though, if you’re going for suede boots be sure to scotch guard them real good to prevent scuff marks and water soiling the material.
Sneakers are also a no-brainer as they provide spades of versatility when paired with a more streetwear aesthetic – think joggers, cropped chinos and cuffed denim.
Layer Up Light

Keeping your layering light is the secret to beating the transitional weather of Melbourne without dropping your style game.
Sweaters and plain T-shirts worn over each other are a enough to get the job done and they don’t even need to be fancy. Monochrome (black and white) is your friend here but muted greys can also work a treat.
Outerwear To Brave The Elements In Style

This is where things get serious with leather biker jackets and tailored overcoats adding an impeccable finishing touch to your quintessential Melbourne look.
As the windchill factor rises, coat up as required. Similarly, venturing indoors into warmer pockets simply means that layers can be peeled off with little effort and the look intact.
We recommend going for the classic black here but similarly darker hues like navy can also work.

Leg Warmers Of The Denim Variety

Denim may scream as an obvious move for locals, but for others who are more accustomed to board shorts and thongs, it’s a staple garment for all seasons of Melbourne. Go for black denim bottoms and your choice of upper garments will almost be limitless.

Every man and his dog has an opinion on protein shakes. While it should be common knowledge that protein shakes should only be used to supplement a diet/meal plan, the type of protein powder you use and the time of day you consume it can often be the subject of debate.Nutritionist Max Lugavere – who has previously given his personal views on protein shakes, claiming “not everyone needs [them]” but admits they are a “low-calorie way of upping your protein intake” – recently sat down with Dr Gabrielle Lyon, a physician and expert in muscle tissue and protein, to get the inside scoop on how many scoops you should be having.Appearing on an episode of Max’s podcast The Genius Life, (which is a fantastic one-hour biology lesson with plenty of insights) the host asked Dr Lyon her view on protein shakes, following a deeper conversation about food consumption – she says that backloading carbs (restricting the majority of your carb intake until later in the day) can help with deep sleep, and that protein intake should be distributed throughout the day – and how you need to be ensuring you consume the right amount of protein (1g per lb of ideal/goal body weight). But, her views on protein shakes?
“Protein shakes can be very valuable, [but] they have to be taken at one time, you cannot sip it.”
“If you sip it, then you are [in the] sub-threshold of the amino acid content and this is the number one thing I see people do, they’ll say ‘I’m gonna have this protein shake’ and then they’ll sip it over an hour.”“You have to drink it within half an hour. The goal for muscle health is to get the boldest amount of amino acids in the bloodstream at once.”
“Anything below that, you’re just getting calories.”
But what about the type of protein? There are numerous varieties available to us today, with the majority being animal/dairy-based or plant-based. Max has previously championed whey protein for its cleaner properties and “abundance of BCAAs.”Dr Lyon is in agreement. “If you’re going to have egg [protein powder], just eat the egg. Whey has a great amino acid profile.”“I do utilise the rice pea blend for those that are sensitive, but I’m not a super fan, because we don’t know what the long term effects are. It’s with pea, and we have no idea of its estrogen activity.”
“So I would say a great whey is fantastic.”
Max adds that whey protein digests incredibly fast, which Dr Lyon says it what you need. Max then asks if there’s then any issue with consuming whey in the middle of the day. “It’s not just a post-workout tool.”Dr Lyon agrees, adding “when you exercise, your muscles are primed, so essentially you’re getting more nutrient delivery, so you could actually get away with less protein [in the post-workout window.”“I won’t recommend anyone do that, but it is a possibility.”The takeaway? Keep drinking your protein shakes, but drink them quickly for optimal results.
