The Piaget Altiplano Ultimate Concept is a name to be revered in modern horology. That’s because it’s currently the world’s thinnest mechanical timepiece.
Unveiled at SIHH 2018, the Altiplano Ultimate Concept clocks in at a wafer-thin 2mm for the entire thickness of the watch (and not just the movement). It also comes as the successor to Piaget’s 900P which previously held the title at 3.65mm.
The question is, how did the Swiss watchmaker achieve this feat of eradicating an entire 1.65mm of watch from an already svelte body? Technical ingenuity.
Once again pushing the boundaries of ultra-thin watchmaking, Piaget have reimagined the conventions of watch construction with careful attention given to the balance and balance spring – and by special attention we mean they’ve negated the balance cock, the shock absorbing system and balance staff. This factors most into creating one of Piaget’s thinnest profiles.
If that’s not compelling enough to convince punters of the exacting detail the designers have gone through then there’s also the watch crystal which clocks in at a ridiculous 0.2mm thick, the coverless mainspring barrel, the absence of a conventional bezel and a flat crown which seamlessly follows the case’s radial curvature.
Speaking of case, this one’s rather special too. The 41mm case is made from “High tech cobalt alloy” which serves as a rigid base for the intricate movement living inside that comprises of up to 283 components.
Holistically, this innovative approach to watchmaking sees the Ultimate Concept afford a power reserve of 44 hours alongside 30 metres of water resistance despite its minimalist frame. To protect its design integrity Piaget even enlisted five dedicated patents on this timepiece that’s not even on sale.
To polish things off the Altiplano Ultimate Concept is beautifully paired with a black dial and a 1.1mm thick alligator leather-kevlar strap.

They may just look after your accommodation when you’re off on your adventure, but there’s no doubting that Airbnb has changed the tourism landscape – and now they also have the keys to your 2018 travel itinerary.
In its latest survey findings, the company revealed the ten most popular cities their users travelled to and it was all about the big ticket names. The list comes via Airbnb’s 2018 Travel Trends and highlights locations across the US, Europe and one Asian country.
On a more hostile front, the survey also revealed that travellers were still trading up hotels for Airbnb accommodation as many preferred to be closer to locals and their traditions as opposed to being holed up in tourist precincts.
Not surprisingly, cities such as Paris, New York and London made the top ten of the most booked cities. Smaller newcomers to the list now includes Lisbon and Miami amongst Airbnb travellers.
Airbnb reinforced this data with what they believe is the right direction for tourism.
“It helps people create new economic opportunities for themselves in the homes and communities where they live, and helping emerging destinations welcome more visitors in a scalable, sustainable way,” the statement said.
“With up to 97 percent of the accommodation charge remaining in the hands of hosts, and 42 percent of guests’ spending occurring within the neighbourhoods where they stay, the financial impact of home sharing can be significant for emerging travel destinations.”
Here is the list of the most popular Airbnb cities for the year:
1: Tokyo
2: Paris
3: Osaka
4:New York City
5: London
6: Rome
7: Orlando
8: Miami
9: Sydney
10: Lisbon

SIHH 2018 is officially off and running and we’re currently here in Geneva scouting some of the finest wristware to grace the spotlight at this year’s exhibition.
First up is IWC Schaffhausen who are celebrating a milestone 150th anniversary in impeccable style with their Jubilee collection.
Read about each model below and then take a closer look at the details in the gallery above.
Big Pilot’s Watch Big Date Edition
It wouldn’t be a celebration of IWC without the latest version of the wildly popular Big Pilot’s timepieces. Three limited edition Pilot’s Watches made the show this year and a favourite of ours was the Date Edition.
This particular piece comes in two variations which feature characteristic dials produced using a complex lacquering process in white or blue.
The Big Pilot’s Watch Big Date Edition “150 Years” (Ref. 5105) is the first Big Pilot’s Watch from IWC to wear a date display featuring large numerals beneath the triangular index at the 12 o’clock mark.
Movement is catered to by the IWC-manufactured calibre 59235, a mechanism derived from the hand-wound calibre 59210 with a date function added in by the watch designers.
An extensive 8 day power reserve is afforded by this movement with the power reserve display moved to the caseback in order to preserve the uncluttered style of the dial that is signature to Pilot’s Watches.
Two limited-edition models will be made available with 100 pieces allocated to each dial colour. Ref. IW510503 and Ref. IW510504 will individually retail for AU$20,700.
IWC Tribute To Pallweber Edition
Joining the Jubilee celebration is a stunning trio of watches in the form of the limited edition Tribute to Pallweber wristwatches complete with jumping numerals.
Arguably one of IWC’s most innovative showings to date, this timepiece incorporates a digital hours and minutes display in a wristwatch for the very first time. Tradition wasn’t lost through innovation though as IWC utilised this form of time/date display on their pocket watches way back in 1884.
Today the forgotten dial design has been revived for the brand’s anniversary alongside an equally pioneering movement. The IWC-manufactured 94200 calibre features cutting edge engineering that merges intricate mechanics with a sophisticated digital display complete with a high 60-hour power reserve.
A total of 25 watches will be made in platinum (Ref. IW505001), 500 in stainless steel (Ref. IW505003) and 250 in red gold (Ref. IW505002), the latter of which retails for AU$52,000.
Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Tourbillon Edition
Our final favourite from IWC this year comes in the form of a stunning tourbillon piece.
The Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Tourbillon Edition “150 Years” brings a perpetual calendar together with a tourbillon on the dial for the first time ever in the watchmaker’s history.
In total there are five new limited-edition Portugieser watches this year and it’s a clear sign that IWC is keen to highlight its Haute Horlogerie expertise during this important anniversary year.
As such, all timepieces feature the design of the Jubilee collection which is the aforementioned dial characteristics produced using a complex lacquering process in white or blue.
On the Portugieser Perpetual Calendar Tourbillon Edition “150 Years” we have an 18-carat red gold case paired with a white dial with lacquered finish and blued hands.
A newly developed IWC- manufactured 51950 calibre is utilised here as an extension of the 51900 calibre which sees the addition of a perpetual calendar.
The complex movement is made of 82 individual components and weighs just 0.635 grams. The tourbillon itself sits at the 12 o’clock mark alongside an integrated moon phase in rhe month display disc at 6 o’clock.
A solid gold rotor along with an automatic winding system generates a power reserve of 7 days. Only 50 pieces of the limited edition watch will be made with a retail price of AU$153,000 a pop.

After calling an end to the production of its iconic off-roader back in November last year, a car which saw little change in its design across four decades, the G-Wagen is back.
The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class made its debut today and it looks, well, kind of the same bar a wider and longer body. Keen eyes will however notice a slightly more sculpted body and LED headlights, but the essential boxy aesthetic is still there whilst the engineers focused their efforts on making the car more capable in the off-road department.
The biggest mechanical change sees the solid axle front suspension traded up for an independent front suspension to free up space under the engine that wasn’t there during the last forty years. This extra real estate will allow the new suspension setup to run more ground clearance whilst improving high-speed off-road handling.
New materials used for the chassis also means a lighter and more rigid body – and remember, this isn’t even the balls-to-the-wall AMG variant yet. Adjustable dampers also come as an option in the 2019 model which should help widen the appeal of the traditionally rawer G-Wagen of yesteryear.
Engine variant details are scarce at the moment but we do know that one option will please the power hungry. The G550 will feature one option with the proven 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 from the previous generation in a revised format. Power is rated at 310kW and 610Nm here. This is mated to a full-time four-wheel-drive layout alongside a new 9-speed automatic transmission with a two-speed transfer case as standard.
Watch the video and have a peruse through the gallery of the new car before the ballistic AMG version follows suit.

Men of tiny wrists rejoice, the latest announcement from TAG Heuer‘s smartwatch department is big news.
The Swiss-made TAG Heuer Modular Connected smartwatch now comes in a smaller and easier to wear size with the Modular Connected 41.
As the name suggests, the model expands its collection from the bigger 45mm case to a more refined 41mm unit backed up by newer colour variants. The most important part is that the watch still retains all of the winning functionality of its bigger brother without the initial bulk which excluded some men from wearing it.
The new Modular 41 inherits design elements from Google and Intel whilst the hardware front boasts a new AMOLED 390×390 screen offering 326 ppi resolution and improved brightness. In other words, Youtube on the wrist never looked so damn fine.
Storage capacity has also been bumped up to a respectable 8 GB whilst RAM sits at 1 GB to ensure smooth operation between handy apps like Spotify and Shazam.
Of course the defining feature of the Modular namesake is the fact that the case can be easily switched out for a Calibre 5 three-hand mechanical module at the wearer’s inclination. Even the strap and lugs can be personalised.
The Modular 41 features 7 standard models to choose from alongside 9 different straps to ensure that no Connected smartwatch looks exactly the same.
Water resistance is set to 50 metres and practical features such as GPS and NFC for contactless payments via Android Pay is also possible. Apple fans will be able to get a taste of the watch if they’re running iOS 9 or later.
Pricing for the TAG Heuer Modular 41 starts at US$1,200 with Australian pricing yet to be announced.

Just when you thought annoying baby photos crowding your Facebook feed couldn’t get any worse, Mark Zuckerberg has opened the floodgates to even more bad news. The social network today announced that it will be downgrading posts from brand pages, businesses and media outlets in favour of posts from friends and more video content.

Whilst babies are cool and all, being overrun by them from eager parents insisting on using Facebook as an hourly memoir is no laughing matter.
“The first changes you’ll see will be in News Feed, where you can expect to see more from your friends, family and groups. As we roll this out, you’ll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media.”
Zuckerberg announced in a public post via his profile that the aim was to endorse more meaningful social interactions. This move could potentially do the opposite by driving users off the social media platform but Zuckerberg remained steadfast in his beliefs.
“We started making changes in this direction last year, but it will take months for this new focus to make its way through all our products,” he said.
“The first changes you’ll see will be in News Feed, where you can expect to see more from your friends, family and groups. As we roll this out, you’ll see less public content like posts from businesses, brands, and media.”
“And the public content you see more will be held to the same standard – it should encourage meaningful interactions between people.”
For brands and business who built their name or rely on Facebook followers to operate effectively, Facebook’s head of News Feed had some more dire news.
“Because space in News Feed is limited, showing more posts from friends and family and updates that spark conversation means we’ll show less public content, including videos and other posts from publishers or businesses,” said Adam Mosseri.
“As we make these updates, Pages may see their reach, video watch time and referral traffic decrease. The impact will vary from Page to Page, driven by factors including the type of content they produce and how people interact with it. Pages making posts that people generally don’t react to or comment on could see the biggest decreases in distribution. Pages whose posts prompt conversations between friends will see less of an effect.”
More specifically, Mosseri warned that publishers, brands and businesses who used “engagement-bait” to drive comments would be targeted and demoted in the news feed. Users can set their preferences to see more content from their page follows, but this will not be the default setting with the new rollout.
“We feel a responsibility to make sure our services aren’t just fun to use, but also good for people’s well-being,” added Zuckerberg.
“So we’ve studied this trend carefully by looking at the academic research and doing our own research with leading experts at universities.”
“The research shows that when we use social media to connect with people we care about, it can be good for our well-being. We can feel more connected and less lonely, and that correlates with long term measures of happiness and health. On the other hand, passively reading articles or watching videos – even if they’re entertaining or informative – may not be as good.”
Whilst it may seem that Zuckerberg is once again playing God with his 2.07 billion users, it doesn’t come without a sacrifice.
“I want to be clear: by making these changes, I expect the time people spend on Facebook and some measures of engagement will go down,” he said. “But I also expect the time you do spend on Facebook will be more valuable. And if we do the right thing, I believe that will be good for our community and our business over the long term too.”

With the dust settled on a hectic holiday season and the resolve to conquer our New Year’s resolutions still strong, we’re making a travel bucket list and checking it twice.
Today’s globetrotters have more options and opportunities than ever before. Affordable flights are on the rise, Instagram is introducing previously under-the-radar destinations to a new audience, and there’s never been a safer time to take to the skies.
A fresh batch of PTO is burning a hole in our pockets and we’re itching to plan a new year of adventures. According to experts, these are the 2018 travel trends that will rule the industry in the coming months.
Unusual Accommodations

Why stay in a hotel when you could shack up in a yurt? Or a ryokan? Or a treehouse? Or a tricked-out Airstream? Travellers are increasingly eschewing traditional lodgings for more unique digs found on the likes of Airbnb and Glamping Hub. Holiday accommodations are no longer merely a place to hunker down after a long day of sightseeing – they’re an experience in and of itself. #VanLife won’t be going away any time soon.
Pop Culture Pilgrimages

Your binge-watching habits are about to infiltrate your bucket list. According to Booking.com, tourists will turn to their favourite movies, television shows, and music videos for travel inspiration in 2018. Shooting locations from Game of Thrones (Croatia, Spain, Iceland), Sherlock and The Crown (London), Billions (New York City), and Entourage (Los Angeles) are set to be particularly popular this year.

Experiences > Things

It’s a scientifically-proven fact that spending money on experiences leads to greater satisfaction than spending money on material things, and travellers are finally catching on. Airbnb’s Experiences feature grew rapidly over the last year, mostly amongst millennial travellers, and adventure travel continues to be a popular category. Tourists are also showing increasing interest in immersing themselves in their destinations so they can experience the culture like a local rather than a spectator.
Winter Is Getting Cooler

As inviting as the tropical, bikini-clad pictures on your Insta-feed look, travellers are gearing up to explore more in 2018. Winter travel is on the rise thanks to events like China’s Harbin Ice Festival and the hedonistic extravaganza of Snowbombing in Austria. Hoteliers are also increasingly venturing into uncharted snowy territory with escapes that embrace their frozen surrounds, including glass igloos for viewing the Northern Lights and intricately-carved ice hotels.
Responsible Travel Rules

Travellers have found their conscience and are ready to let it guide their globetrotting. People are increasingly interested in social responsibility and humanitarianism, and travel with the intention of “paying it forward” and giving back to local communities while they explore. The continued rise of eco-tourism complements these initiatives with its focus on sustainability and environmental preservation.

Millennials Embrace Packages

As a notoriously finicky (and financially fraught) generation, millennials have so far shunned the travel agents, cruises, and packaged tours that once ruled the travel industry, instead preferring to strike out on their own to maximise independence while minimising costs. This year that’s set to change, as brands reimagine more traditional formats to target millennial travellers. Cruise lines in particular are anxious to re-invent themselves for a younger, experience-hungry audience.
Wellness Won’t Quit

The wellness trend will hold on tight for at least another year. From mindful movement holidays, to happiness retreats, to digital detoxes, travellers are obsessed with putting their getaways to good use. Experts predict that the number of people taking health and wellbeing trips will double from 2017 to 2018, from one in 10 last year to nearly one in five this year. According to Health and Fitness Travel, some of 2018’s biggest wellness travel trends will focus on healthy aging, new-age spirituality, mindfulness, architectural wellness, and ‘food as medicine’.
New Tech Frontiers Emerge

Companies are boldly going where no travel brands have gone before. Booking.com predicts that immersive experiences will reach the next level in 2018, with travellers turning to technology to help better understand a destination or accommodation before they book. Artificial intelligence and digital technology are reshaping the way we research and experience our adventures, hopefully taking the hard work out of planning for more seamless and stress-free holidays.

Solo Travel Reaches An All-Time High

Google searches for “solo travel” and “travel alone” were the highest they’ve ever been in January of this year. Travellers are growing increasingly confident in going it alone. What was once a market niche is now fully mainstream and shows no signs of slowing down as we enter 2018. Face it. It wouldn’t take a lot of scrolling back in the browsing history to find out what your last porn search was. Women however are a bit more discreet when it comes to enjoying the uh, fruits of other people’s labour.
Fear not, curious wonderer. Pornhub have released fresh data which shows exactly what kind of porn women were searching for in 2017. The world’s most popular porn destination even discovered that the search term “porn for women” increased by more than 359 percent on their site from the period of 2016 to 2017.
Here’s what the breakdown looks like between the two genders.
The results reveal a pretty notable difference between what men and women porn consumers were searching for. The top three searches for women were “lesbian”, “lesbian scissoring” and “threesome”. On the male side there was a surprising number searches for “milfs”, “step mothers” and “Japanese”.
Dr. Laurie Betito who is a sex therapist and director of Pornhub’s Sexual Wellness Centre linked the influx of women watching porn to the greater 2017 movement of women feeling empowered to express their desires freely.
“From the “Me too” movement to prominent females the likes of Hillary Clinton and Nikki Haley on the world stage, women are feeling more empowered and they have found their voice,” she said. “This is a sign of things to come.”
One of the oddest – and probably not very surprising – finds is the trending search for 2017 amongst men. “Fidget spinner” came in at first place. At least it wasn’t dabbing.
And while you’re here, we’ve got some bad news if you watch porn on your phone.
