Porsche’s Best-Selling Car Model Set To Be Axed By 2024
Porsche’s Best-Selling Car Model Set To Be Axed By 2024

What's Porsche's most popular car? Is it the iconic 911? The spirited Boxster? The luxurious Panamera? Or maybe even the Cayenne SUV?

Nope, it's actually the Porsche Macan, Porsche's crossover SUV and the cheapest model in the Stuttgart marque's lineup. When the Macan first hit the market in 2014, it immediately caused a stir. Not because it was an SUV – the Cayenne had already opened that door (or can of worms, depending on your perspective) – but because of its punchier price point and impressive performance credentials. Both the public and press were enamoured with the thing.

The Macan is now Porsche's best-selling car. Indeed, in 2019, Porsche sold more Macans in the US than 911s, 718s, Panameras and Taycans combined. It's emblematic of how crossovers have taken over the car market in recent years, as well as how much Porsche has changed as a brand.

But in some rather intriguing news, Porsche has revealed that the Macan as we know it isn't long for this world – with big changes on the way for the rest of the Porsche marque.

In an interview with Autocar, Sebastian Staiger, Manager of Porsche's Complete Vehicle/Chassis division and the man in charge of the Macan's future, reveals that Porsche plans to completely replace the current Macan range with a new electric-only model range in just three years time.

“There are several limiting factors in a vehicle project. One of these factors, of course, is legislation. Emission laws are another limiting factor. Today, no final decision has been taken, but we assume that 2024 will be the year,” Staiger relates.

This, of course, fits into Porsche's company-wide plan to ensure at least 80% of all its vehicles sold globally will be either partially or fully electric by 2030 – but it's surprising that Porsche is so willing to kill its golden goose in pursuit of electrification. It's a ballsy move.

For those worried that the 911 faces the chopping block, don't fear: Porsche confirmed earlier this year that there are no plans in the works for an electric version of the 911 and that it will be the last Porsche model to be electrified, CNBC reports.

“The 911 is our icon. We will continue to build the 911 with a combustion engine... The concept of the 911 doesn’t allow a fully electric car because we have the engine in the rear. To put the weight of the battery in the rear, you wouldn’t be able to drive the car,” Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has told reporters.

Porsche currently has only one fully electric car in its range: the Taycan sedan. Additionally, the Panamera sedan and Cayenne SUV are also available as plug-in hybrids (PHEV) – but the 911, Boxster/Cayman and Macan ranges all remain petrol-only... At least for now.

Singapore Airport Adopts Controversial ‘Italian Nonna’ Approach To Social Distancing
Singapore Airport Adopts Controversial ‘Italian Nonna’ Approach To Social Distancing

Desolate scenes out of Singapore airport show off an interesting 'Italian Nonna' type approach to social distancing, with various seats having been bombed with plastic wrapping in order to prevent people from sitting on them.

While separating passengers and travellers in these challenging times has been the norm for a while now, most airports we've seen around the world have used signs and stickers to indicate where you can sit and where you can't.

Singapore airport's solution comes as a surprise then. Effective? Sure. But not exactly the most environmentally friendly way of doing things. In any case, that is the method the airport has chosen to go with, as you can see in the video below.

Watch Singapore airline's social distancing solution in the video below

In the footage, sent to DMARGE by a traveller who recently went through Singapore, the airport can be seen as sparse with people, and the filmer can be heard saying: "airport is not that busy" and "rather empty."

Viewers are then treated to a glimpse of Singapore airport's plastic wrap approach to social distancing.

Aside from this wrapping of seats (in a style akin to how some people wrap their luggage to make it obvious if it's been tampered with at the other end), millions of face masks are already going into landfill thanks to the pandemic.

Singapore has had a tough time of COVID-19 lately. Despite having some of the globes highest vaccination rates, new infection rates have risen again and new restrictions have been brought in to combat them.

A news.com.au reported on the weekend, "Singapore has been hailed globally for its success in combatting the coroanvirus, but new developments in its battle against the pandemic are proving how difficult it will be to sustain a return to normal life."

Singapore's finance minister, Lawrence Wong, however, has said that Singapore is set on re-opening and that recently reimposed restrictions are in place to make sure hospitals and health workers can handle an increased number of daily cases.

He told Bloomberg: “Our overall strategy has not changed."

"We are committed to reopening our economy and our society progressively, but our aim has always been to do this without putting too much stress on our hospital system."

"We want to keep our health care system intact and under control, and we want to avoid unnecessary deaths.”

Watch Sleuths Uncover Rare Titanium Rolex That Could Soon Be A Reality

Rolex run one of the tightest ships in the watch game – pun entirely intended.

The 116-year-old Swiss watch manufacturer is notoriously secretive, especially when it comes to R&D or new product launches. Naturally, this only makes the brand more alluring – there's a whole cottage industry surrounding Rolex gossip and speculation. It's a big game of smoke and mirrors.

Thankfully, watch fans are a dedicated and scrupulous bunch, with one Rolex specialist spotting what the rest of the world missed: a brand new, truly revolutionary Rolex.

Capt. Danny Crivello, a Delta Air Lines pilot by trade and editor of Rolex Magazine, made the eagle-eyed discovery after pouring over photos of INEOS Team UK, a contender for the 36th America's Cup, competing in this year's Prada Cup. Having previously overlooked it, Crivello doubled back and spotted an unusual Rolex on the wrist of Sir Ben Ainslie, the team's skipper.

Turns out it was a unique prototype Yacht-Master 'No Date' made out of titanium. Being that Rolex has never officially released a titanium watch, this is a huge discovery. On top of that, the watch is on a Cordura NATO strap – something else Rolex has never officially offered. What gives?

[caption id="attachment_303106" align="alignnone" width="920"] Images: Rolex Magazine[/caption]

"In creating a watch especially designed for the most competitive regattas, Rolex approached the most successful Olympic sailor of all time, Sir Ben Ainslie, and asked him to take the watch on real races, like the America's Cup or the SailGP," Crivello explains.

"Actual pictures of Rolex's first titanium watch are hard to come by. I've requested more pictures from Rolex, and Rolex politely responded: 'We do not wish to communicate more about this model than what we already have.'"

"The cynics will call it pure marketing genius; I call it a laser-beam focus on engineering the next tool watch."

Titanium is arguably the perfect material for a tool watch. It's stronger yet lighter than steel while also being resistant to rusting and corrosion. However, many luxury buyers equate weightiness with luxury (it's part of the reason gold watches are so popular) – as Rivello puts it, "compared to steel, titanium lacks the heft, the lustre and is arguably less attractive while it is more expensive to produce. It doesn’t take to polish as well as steel either, which is why you often see titanium watches with matte or blasted finishes."

In that sense, you can understand why a luxury-oriented brand like Rolex hasn't released a titanium watch yet. Their sister brand Tudor, however, has released a titanium watch: the Pelagos dive watch, which first hit the market in 2012 and has since become one of Tudor's most successful collections.

[caption id="attachment_303114" align="alignnone" width="920"] A Rolex Yacht-Master in rose gold, and a Tudor Pelagos, Rolex/Tudor's first-ever titanium watch. Images: Esquire / Volta[/caption]

It's been a very long time since Rolex made a true tool watch. While iconic models like the Submariner and GMT-Master might have started life as utilitarian, professional timepieces, these days they're firmly considered luxury watches – with the price-point to boot.

But Rolex experimenting with titanium clearly shows they haven't abandoned the tool watch mantle, or at the very least, they're not just resting on their laurels. Most Yacht-Masters never see the deck of a sailboat, racing or otherwise, so it's admirable to see one actually being tested on a yacht in a high-performance, professional environment.

We wonder what other metals or materials Rolex will experiment with next. A ceramic Cosmograph Daytona? A sapphire Sky-Dweller? We'll just have to wait and see...

Boulder Shoulders Guaranteed With This Brutal Upper Body Workout
Boulder Shoulders Guaranteed With This Brutal Upper Body Workout

You should always be on the lookout for new, exciting and challenging workouts or exercises to add to an already developed workout routine. Not only will swapping, adding and changing movements keep things interesting for you, which in turn should continue to give you motivation to go to the gym or to workout, but it helps to keep the muscles guessing and to 'shock' them, so that you can maximise your gains.

Your shoulders are a vital muscle group to target. They're the muscle group with the largest range of motion in the body, and are responsible for a wide range of upper body movements, so keeping them strong and healthy is important. Fortunately, there are a number of shoulder exercises you can perform, from lateral raises through to overhead presses, but this recent shoulder workout we spotted on Instagram is unlike anything you've seen before. It comes from fitness trainer George Bamfo Jr., and just watching it is enough to make our shoulders feel weak.

All you need to complete it (if you dare) is a set of dumbbells, so you could theoretically perform it at home. The shoulder exercises involved are by no means easy, and your shoulder muscles can become fatigued pretty quickly, so you only want to use a light weight to start with to see how long you can last. George might be using 25lb dumbbells, but then, look at the size of him. We'd go for 5kg/11lbs weights as a good starting point.

Check out George Bamfo Jr's Brutal Shoulder Workout in the Video Below

George's workout includes the following movements:

  • Bent Arm Dumbbell Lateral Raise with Rotation: The lateral raise is a classic shoulder exercise that targets the deltoid muscle. Usually you would perform this movement with your arms out straight (albeit with a slight bend in the elbow), but here, George bends his elbows at 90-degrees, allowing him to lift a heavier weight. The wrists rotate too which can help to put a bit of tension on the upper arm muscles (and the rotating movement can help provide some momentum to lift the arms up).
  • Dumbbell Overhead Press with Rotation: The overhead press is another movement that should already be featuring in your upper body workouts. Good for both the shoulders and chest, as well as your arms, it's an essential. Here, George adds a rotation in, rotating at the shoulder. This helps to add tension to the rotator cuff muscles, which will not only make them stronger, but help them to pop too. Also notice how he's performing this movement and others kneeling down. This takes away some stability, so he'll be needing to engage his core a lot more to help prevent his body from swaying around too much.
  • Dumbbell Close Grip Chest Press with Fly: The close grip dumbbell chest press is a great variation of the classic dumbbell chest press. It's a compound movement, so works multiple muscle groups in one hit, including the pecs, deltoids in your shoulders, triceps and your rotator cuff. The fly movement George adds on at the end helps to improve the strength of the rotator cuff, as well as helping to open up the chest muscles.
  • Dumbbell Push Up with Reach: Push-ups on their own are already a fantastic upper body workout, targeting your arms, core, chest, shoulders and back muscles all in one. Here, George uses a narrow-stance with his hands gripping a pair of dumbbells, which he then extends out in front of himself at the top of the push-up movement. This not only requires his core to engage to help him stabilise himself, but the reaching movement is similar to a front lateral raise, meaning he's targeting the deltoid and trap muscles.
  • Russian Twists with Press: Russian twists are a core exercise that sees you sitting down with your legs lifted off the floor, putting all the tension on your core to keep your body upright. Holding a weight, twist your upper body from side to side to target the obliques. Here, George adds in a dumbbell press after one rotation each side, just to give his shoulders on last blast.

This shoulder workout circuit is certainly not easy. So for your first time, try to complete 8 - 10 reps for each movement, and complete the full circuit 3 times.
