Unlike a lot of other spirits that can be produced in various regions around the world, tequila can only be produced in the Tequila region of Mexico (in the same way Champagne can only be classed as such if it’s produced in the Champagne region of France). All tequilas are derived from the blue agave plant found in the area, but various ageing processes, and whether the plant was obtained from highlands or lowlands, gives each bottle a unique taste.
However, there are only four ‘types’ of tequila:
- Blanco, or silver, which is clear and bottled immediately after distillation
- Reposado, a rested tequila that has to be aged for a minimum of two months, but less than a year
- Añejo, an aged or vintage tequila that is stored in small oak barrels for a minimum of a year, but less than three years
- Extra Añejo, an extra-aged tequila stored in small oak barrels for a minimum of three years
There are over 1300 registered tequila brands floating around the world, from some 150 producers, so curating a selection of the best is no easy task. Nevertheless, we’ve done just that to tell you the best tequila brands to look out for next time you’re at the bar or making yourself a delicious margarita.

In this tequila story…
1800

1800 is named so because it’s cited as the year tequila was first successfully aged in wooden barrels. There are six variations available, with Silver, Reposado and Añejo all being represented, along with a coconut-flavoured version which is particularly easy on the palette.
Avión

Avión Tequila is produced using blue agave plants from some of the highest elevations in the town of Jesús Maria, Jalisco, Mexico. The agave is roasted for three days to extract a naturally sweet flavour, before being separated for various ageing processes in former American whiskey barrels, which is why Avión has earned a spot on our list.
Cabo Wabo

The Cabo Wabo tequila brand was founded by Sammy Hagar of Van Halen fame after the rock singer visited the town of Cabo San Lucas with his bandmates. After first starting up a bar and nightclub – also called Cabo Wabo – Hagar began selling a house-brand of tequila, produced by a distillery in the Jalisco region. It was eventually imported to the United States where it was well-received and has since gone on to win numerous awards in the tequila brands industry.
Casamigos

Casamigos was co-founded in 2013 by none other than George Clooney. Clooney and his neighbour – nightclub owner and businessman Rande Gerber – decided to commission a distillery to make a tequila after spending months sampling various others. They wanted a tequila that “didn’t burn going down” and that’s exactly what they got with their Añejo variety. The tequila brand now produces Reposado and Blanco variations too, along with a Mezcal. Personally, we think Casamigos is the tastiest tequila around.
Cazcabel

Cazcabel tequila is produced using blue agave plants from the highlands of the Jalisco mountains. After seven years of growth, the plants are harvested and put through a fermentation and distillation process that involves copper pots and steel stills. The company’s range includes honey, coconut and coffee liqueur flavoured tequilas, as well as the more traditional Blanco and Reposado, making this one of the more versatile tequila brands on the market.
Don Julio

Don Julio is perhaps one of the most recognised tequila brands in the world. It’s certainly the largest in terms of value. It’s named after founder Don Julio González-Frausto Estrada, who began distilling at the age of 17 in 1942. It wasn’t until 1985 that the Don Julio brand was first launched, by Don Julio’s sons, in celebration of his 60th birthday.
Dulce Vida

Dulce Vida tequilas are some of the most awarded in the world. Hailing from San Ignacio Cerro Gordo, Mexico, the company harvests its blue agave plants from the highland region of Jalisco. Not only does it produce tequilas within the four main types, but it offers real-fruit infused variations too, including lime, grapefruit and pineapple jalapeńo.
El Jimador

El Jimador is the best-selling tequila in Mexico, which considering the amount produced in the country, is no mean feat. It gets its name from Jimador, an accolade bestowed upon only the very best agave plant farmers, who can easily and quickly identify which plants are ripe and which aren’t. It’s naturally fermented in open-top distilleries and bottled immediately, resulting in a super-clear Blanco tequila.
Espolón

Espolón is another tequila produced in the Los Altos (Highlands) of Jalisco, under the ownership of Campari America. It was first produced in 1998 by Cirilo Oropeza, who designed the San Nicolas Distillery in which the tequila is still made today. Along with traditional variations, the brand also has an El Colorado tequila, which is the first to be aged in former bourbon barrels.
Herradura

Herradura isn’t just a brand of tequila, but is a major distiller too (it’s responsible for making El Jimador) and was founded in 1870. After remaining in family hands for 125 years it was sold to a US beverage maker in 2007, although it’s still produced on the same site in Amatitán, Jalisco. Herradura is responsible for producing the first Reposado and Extra Añejo tequilas, and the Hacienda in which they’re made is the last active one remaining in the world.
Jose Cuervo

There’s a very good chance you’ve heard, and probably already drunk, Jose Cuervo tequila. It’s the best-selling tequila brand in the world and one that lines the stomachs of virtually every teenager (of legal drinking age), university students, and anyone else who likes a night out. Its history can be traced back to 1758 when King Ferdinand VI of Spain granted Don Jose Antonio de Cuervo some land, which was then used to plant and harvest blue agave plants. The brand currently produces seven tequilas, along with pre-mixed margaritas.
Kah

Kah tequila celebrates The Day Of The Dead, the annual Mexican festival that celebrates the spiritual journey of loved ones who have died – ‘Kah’ is the Mayan word for ‘life’. It’s the source of inspiration for the bottles, which resemble skulls, and each one is hand-painted, so no two bottles are the same.
Milagro

Milagro (Spanish for ‘miracle’) was founded in 1998 by two college friends who wanted to reignite some passion in what they believed to be a rather stale tequila scene in Mexico. Their master distiller Pedro ensures the blue agave plants used come from the Jalisco Highlands, which are then slow-roasted in brick ovens for 36 hours to extract every ounce of flavour. The fermentation process uses two different types of still, and it’s this process that gives Milagro a unique flavour.
Patron

Patron tequila has been around since 1989 but has since changed ownership a couple of times. There’s a good chance you would have already seen bottles in nightclubs and bars, a direct result of a global marketing campaign that has included various celebrity endorsements. Patron produces several varieties of tequila, but it’s perhaps best known for its silver and coffee liqueur-infused varieties.
Tequila Fortaleza

Tequila Fortaleza has only been around as a company since 2005, but its distillation process can be traced back over 100 years. The distillery that Fortaleza uses was resurrected in 1999 (after being closed in 1968) by Don Guillermo, the grandson of Don Javier, who was responsible for finding the small piece of land on which the La Fortaleza distillery sits. The company’s process still uses a small brick oven and the same original copper pots, ensuring the flavour is kept as authentic as possible.
Tromba

Tromba Tequila is the brainchild of Australians Nick Reid and James Sherry. The duo, along with Canadian Eric Brass, decided to start making a tequila of their own after visiting the Highland regions of Jalisco. But rather than make tequila to dominate the Mexican market, the trio was more in the business of exporting, with Australia, America and Canada high up on the list. The fact that their Master Distiller used to work for Don Julio, you know it’s going to be good.
Tequila FAQs
Many connoisseurs swear that the best way to drink tequila is to sip it on its own. You may have it chilled or straight up or even on the rocks. For shots, enjoy it with a wedge of lime and a small amount of salt. Tequila must have between 35 and 55 percent alcohol content or 70 to 100 proof. For the spirit to be sold in the United States and Canada, it must contain at least 40 percent alcohol. Tequila is versatile and can be used in lots of mixed drinks. Margarita is probably the best known tequila cocktail. You may also try the Paloma, Juan Collins, Tequila Sunrise and Brave Bull. How do you drink tequila?

Overnight Delta became the first US airline to extend elite status to customers whose travel plans have been curtailed by the lung-busting pandemic. Barely hours later, United followed Delta’s lead.
But why has it taken them so long? In Australia, where we have just 5,750 confirmed cases of the virus, and are still in a state of somewhat relaxed lockdown, with punters still hitting the beach and jogging like there’s no tomorrow, our two major airlines offered frequent flyers a 12-month status extension almost three weeks ago.
The US, on the other hand, has 336,958 confirmed cases of the virus, is in a much stricter lockdown, and has been that way for weeks. People are scared to brush each other in the supermarket, activities like surfing have been outlawed and no-one is travelling anywhere except for urgent medical reasons (as we reported last week).
So why have America’s airlines taken so much longer to react than Australia’s, despite having a greater (and earlier) reason to offer their frequent flyers peace of mind? A recent New York Times Op-Ed provides a clue at why, writing that American carriers like American Airlines exist in a cut-throat market where the only race, especially domestically, is one to the bottom (think ever reducing seat pitches, baggage allowances, etc).
American Airlines also went on a stock buyback spree, which The New York Times opinion piece took them to task for: “There are plenty of things American could have done with all that money. It could have stored up its cash reserves for a future crisis, knowing that airlines regularly cycle through booms and busts. It might have tried to decisively settle its continuing contract disputes with pilots, flight attendants and mechanics. It might have invested heavily in better service quality to try to repair its longstanding reputation as the worst of the major carriers.”
“Instead, American blew most of its cash on a stock buyback spree. From 2014 to 2020, in an attempt to increase its earnings per share, American spent more than $15 billion buying back its own stock. It managed, despite the risk of the proverbial rainy day, to shrink its cash reserves.”
Why do we mention this, when this article is centred around Delta and United Airlines’ lethargy in extending frequent flyers’ status? Well because so far they are the only airlines to do it, and also to illustrate what a competitive market they operate in.
While Australia’s airspace is also competitive, Qantas used to be government-owned, and even now there are a lot more regulations in place. Much like Medicare (think of it as a sort of heavy-duty Obamacare), Australia is still a free-market capitalist economy, but not quite so much so as the US.
For this reason, Australians (especially those that fly Qantas and Virgin Australia) are used to paying slightly more for their flights than their cousins across the pond, but also have higher expectations of their airlines.
This was driven home to DMARGE recently via reader feedback to our article “Should We Feel Sorry For Qantas & Virgin Australia?“. Unlike The New York Times piece (“Don’t Feel Sorry For [American] Airlines” which garnered support for bailouts to be contingent on American Airlines becoming less privatised, many of our readers were outraged at that same suggestion being levelled at Virgin Australia and Qantas.
Until America elects a Bernie Sanders type figure (which doesn’t look likely any time soon) we’d say this trend is set to continue, and – in loyalty, at least – American carriers will continue to languish behind Australia’s.

Hold onto your masks and clutch your Ventolin – a major US city could have the cleanest air in the world right now. If that’s not enough of a surprise (we’d have thought the cleanest city would be somewhere nearer Greenland or Alaska) its two closest competitors are also from the US.
At the time of writing the city with the cleanest air in the world is Los Angeles, followed by San Francisco (US) and Portland (US). Then, trailing in at third is Sydney (Australia), coming in at fourth is Moscow (Russia) and then landing at fifth on the totem is Melbourne (Australia).
That’s according to IQ Air’s live air quality city rankings. The rankings also show that Denver (US), Vancouver BC (Canada) and Salt Lake City (US) aren’t doing too shabbily either, coming in at 6th, 7th and 8th respectively. Bogota (Columbia) also makes a surprise appearance at 9th and Seattle (US) comes in at 10th (to see the full list, click here).
Aqicn.org broadly supports these stats, putting Los Angeles at number two, and Sydney at number fifteen.
In any case, both air quality analysts agree the world’s worst air quality right now can be found in Chiang Mai (Thailand), Dhaka (Bangladesh), Shenyang (China), Delhi (India), Kathmandu (Nepal), Beijing (China), Yangon (Myanmar), Milano (Italy), Sofia (Bulgaria) and Chengdu (China).

This comes in a context of a temporarily (and marginally) improving atmosphere worldwide, as human activity has shut down on an unprecedented scale. However, the clearer waters in Venice and the bluer skies in Beijing are not set to last, scientists say, and are more surface deep rather than structural.
That said – we may as well enjoy them while we can (even if the only way many people can do so right now is during a brisk walk to the supermarket or by opening their windows). But hey, at the moment, we’ll take whatever silver linings we can get.

And who knows: maybe this is a chance to reassess which activities should be started up again once our respective lockdowns are lifted.

As Australia’s gyms shut their doors, many thought the nation would descend into dad bods and jiggle bellies. How wrong they were. Instead, it appears, every Aussie and their dog are running the country’s boardwalks into dust.
“There are way more people than usual, no one really respecting social distancing… people running very close to other people and almost touching them when running past,” one Northern Beaches local told 9 News last week.
Shirt hanging out of shorts, pecs bouncing, skin turning Merlot-red, sweat pouring from temples, running seems to have gone from ‘that thing some people do’ to Australia’s number one hobby.
Aside from inspiring a new branch of clickbait literature “the one person you should avoid at all costs,” this new trend has posed some legitimate health concerns.

Without jumping on the drama bandwagon, it’s true that running involves excreting a great deal of bodily fluid.
It’s also true that with so many people out of a gym (and with two hours extra a day to kill, working from home, or out of a job altogether), the nation’s running trails and boardwalks are arguably seeing higher usage than before the lockdown.
Ironically, this makes it harder to do what is now crucial – to give each other a bit of space (at least 1.5 metres).

For those Australians that face this dilemma of wanting to run (after all there’s only so many home-workouts you can do before you fancy a change of scenery) and who want to limit their chances of getting the virus or infecting others, here’s what you need to do.
Drawn from the tips David Nieman, Dr.PH., health professor at Appalachian State University and director of the Human Performance Lab at the North Carolina Research Campus, and Brian Labus, Ph.D., MPH, assistant professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Nevada Las Vegas recently gave Runner’s World, here’s what you need to know before running right now in Australia.
- Run alone: even if if you’re technically allowed to exercise with your live-in partner, it’s better to run solo as you are not so hard to overtake
- Run outside of peak times: avoid the 7 to 8am pre-work rush-hour, and the 6 to 7pm blow off steam session
- Run in less crowded areas: make like a surfer, shrug off the crowds
- Don’t touch things if possible: and if you do, don’t touch your face until you’ve washed your hands
- Reap the health benefits of keeping fit: there’s a reason you’re doing it, after all

Ever since the caveman placed the first string of bones around his neck, jewellery has been a staple of individual expression for mankind. A symbol of status and power, aristocrats, gladiators, and royalty were all known to have adorned themselves with jewel-encrusted rings, pocket watches, and golden chains.
Fast forward to the 21st century, and you would be forgiven for thinking that the online jewellery market was dominated by brands catering only to women, but this is far from the truth! Celebrities like Robert Downey Jr., Lenny Kravitz, and Ringo Starr have brought men’s jewellery back into the limelight.
Jewellery was, and is, for anyone and everyone, and when worn the right way, embellishes any outfit with a touch of sophistication. So whether you’re looking to get iced out yourself or you want to treat the lady in your life to something sparkly, we’ve curated our top picks for online jewellery stores.
Online Jewellery Stores FAQs
What should I look for when buying jewellery?
Always look for a maker’s mark. It is a stamp of authenticity indicating the origin of the jewellery. If you can, buy only from reputable jewelers. Inspect the piece and look for flaws. Make sure the metal is not scratched and the gem is secure in the mounting.
How can you tell fake gold from real gold?
One way to determine is to hold a magnet up to the metal. Real gold is not magnetic, so if it is real, it will not stick to the magnet.
Is jewellery a good investment?
Yes, if your jewellery came from the collections of top designers. They will retain their value because the makers are known for using only high-quality gems and precious metals in each piece.

No one wants to be reminded of nature’s scythe. But we’ve all had that rude awakening. Now we know how our ancestor’s felt when a plague came to call.
Creature comforts be damned: unless you have someone to fetch your shopping, you’re at risk.
This has its obvious downsides. It also has silver linings, with Venice regaining its magic, Australian couples experiencing unprecedented levels of (as the scientists put it) ‘doinking’ and singles taking the chance to (digitally) reconnect with friends, family and even themselves while in lockdown.
Then there are the creepy implications: something German artist Timo Helgert, known on Instagram as Vacades, has been exploring of late with tech-infused realism.
From meadow filled Brooklyn trains…
… as well as a nature-reclaimed Taj Mahal…

The last few months have revealed the ups and downs of Timo’s mental state (much like the rest of us) as the worldwide pandemic has ratcheted up notch by notch.
Creepy as they are: you’ve got to admit the guy has talent. A read of his website also reveals he’s got his heart in the right place too, with Timo writing: “The idea behind [this project] was to support the people who are suffering during the hard times.”
“While media is creating fear and anxiety, I wanted to do the opposite, create hope and inspire everyone who is locked at home, unable to go out and enjoy nature.”
Let’s just hope this situation gets sorted out before things really do get like this (and before your annoying neighbour gets his whipper snipper out on the train).

Our current predicament is causing the vast majority of us to get creative with the extra time we now have at home. Whether it be learning a new skill or doing several home workouts in order to come out the other side of the lockdown a much healthier version of ourselves that before we went into it.
One trend that seems to show no signs of slowing down, however, is guys getting their hair cut at home. Even though some barbershops and hairdressers are still open in some countries, it hasn’t stopped men from getting themselves a set of clippers, a pair of scissors and, fortunately in most cases, someone else to cut their hair for them.
The ‘homehaircut’ hashtag has just under 16,000 posts on Instagram at the time of writing, and we suspect a bulk of those has come within the last couple of months since we told to stay indoors.
While we technically do have plenty of time to scroll through them all, we decided we could have definitely found other stuff to be doing, so have picked out just a few posts that, while may not be completely terrible (and certainly not as bad as you might first think), they still prove hairdressing should definitely be left to the professionals.
Some guys, such as these two below, have gone for the shaved sides look but decided to leave the length on top. Presumably because touching it with scissors would have only ended in utter failure.

We’re probably going to see plenty more mullets coming out of the home haircut fad too. If you decide to take the clippers to your hair yourself, you’re not going to be able to see the back too well, so just take care of the parts you can see and you’ll be left with a mane that would make Australia proud.

We don’t even know what this guy was thinking. And we don’t know where to start being critical.
View this post on Instagram
It’s not all doom and gloom though, as this man proves that with a helping hand, you can actually achieve some good results.

But to make things easiest for yourself, just cut it all off, like me.
But don’t for one second think it will be a good idea to dye it. Yes, you can easily spend time indoors so you don’t have to face the public. But some people will see, and you’ll also have to live with the fact you made a very bad decision. Also, like me.

But then again, you could also fall foul in attempting to mimic the hairstyle of some of your favourite celebrities, like my colleague, James (if I’m going down, I’m taking someone with me).

We’re a good few weeks into the self-isolation period imposed on us by our governments. We’re slowly adapting to the change of not being able to venture outside unless it’s deemed absolutely necessary, and are finding ways to keep ourselves occupied indoors until the lockdown is lifted.
Whether it be creating TikTok videos, having virtual pub meetups with our mates or simply just keeping fit, we’re all finding ways to make use of the extra hours afforded to us during the day. For men specifically, the self-isolation period has caused them to turn to cutting their own hair, in a bid to prevent their manes from looking like Tom Hank’s character in Castaway.
We’ve seen some valiant efforts from guys attempting style haircuts, with various home haircut hashtags trending worldwide on social media platforms. But to be safe and to avoid looking foolish, there’s only one haircut guys can opt for, and David Beckham just showed us all how it’s done.
View this post on Instagram
That’s because Golden Balls himself has decided to go for the full chop, taking the clippers to his hair, sans guard. Becks is known worldwide not just for his sporting talent, but for his history of haircuts and hairstyles (some admittedly better than others) and ability to look good in practically anything he wears.
His latest post on Instagram just adds more weight to that argument, with the former Manchester United midfielder rocking the buzz cut with overriding success. He’s an inspiration for dodgy-haircut toting men everywhere, and we hope for the sake of mankind that guys follow suit and take the clippers to their heads too.
It’s a bold step to take, sure, especially if you’re used to having mid- to long-length hair, but a number 1 or number 2 all over will suit the majority of face shapes. Plus, if you’re not a fan, you’ve got to be locked up inside anyway so no need to worry about other people seeing.

The current lockdown measures still allow us to get outside once per day to do some form of exercise. The majority of us will likely use this time to go running, or at the very least, walking. It’s, therefore, a prime time to improve your cardio, something that can often get overshadowed by our usual daily work routines.
We turned to the experts to find out exactly what could be achievable in two weeks or more if we commit to regular exercise. Ben Lucas, Director of Flow Athletic was happy to answer our questions, and started by telling us, “A good measure to understand if your cardio training is getting better could be that you start training harder and at a greater intensity.”
“If your times improve (ie you can get one more burpee in within the minute or your run time improves) or maybe the task you are doing gets easier, then it means it’s time to adapt your workout or routine to make it a bit harder.”
“Say you want to improve your 10km run by 1 minute, this is potentially doable in two weeks.”
“You would do this by practising hill sprints, going for some long runs and even getting in the weights room to strengthen your legs, butt and core to help you get stronger.”
“Make sure you take some rest days though as you won’t be going faster if you are too tired to move.”
But before you start thinking that cardio training will deplete any muscle gains you made in the gym before they were shut down, let us take you back to an article we published at the beginning on last year.
In it, we focused on Ross Edgeley – who is perhaps one of the most physically fit people we’ve ever come across – who says that cardio training, combined with strength training, can actually elicit greater muscle gains than strength training alone.
It’s a common conception that cardio is for fat loss and shredding, whereas strength training piles on the muscular pounds. Ross says ‘pish’ to all this, and claims cardio training can complement any resistance training you do (if you’re doing resistance training at home, this could come in the form of resistance band workouts to using your sofa as a multi-station piece of equipment).
Ross says of this match made in fitness heaven, “Performing any form of cardiovascular training dramatically improves your capillary density. Capillaries are the small blood vessels that network through the muscles and by increasing their density you also increase your own ability to supply the working muscles with blood, oxygen and nutrients during training.”
“This is one of the most overlooked aspects of strength training as power-based athletes arguably place too much emphasis on shifting iron than looking after their capillaries.”
So if you’ve been potentially put off of dusting off your training sneakers, believing that you’re better off curling a set of dining room chairs than facing the great outdoors, have a rethink and start off with a light jog. You could even follow Conor McGregor‘s lead by adding in some stair sprints too.
