Rossgram is Russia’s Answer To Instagram
Rossgram is Russia’s Answer To Instagram

Russians are now launching their own version of Instagram, after Moscow blocked citizens’ access to the photo-sharing platform on Monday.

Moscow’s move to block a reported 80 millon Russians’ access to Instagram came after Instagram’s US owner – Meta Platforms – said last week it would be lenient on social media users in Ukraine, allowing them to express their resistance and fury at the invading forces by permitting them to post messages such as “death to the Russian invaders” on the platform.

Meta said the change in its hate speech policy only applied to Ukraine after Russia’s invasion and would only be temporary.

In response to this gaping hole in the market (which, The Guardian reports, had Russia’s influenceri in tears), some Russian entrepreneurs are launching their own version of Instagram called ‘Rossgram.’

Euro News, an outlet which claims to have seen Rossgram’s website, report that Rossgram’s site says Rossgram will launch on March the 28th, and will have “additional functions such as crowdfunding and paid access for some content.”

It has also been reported that Rossgram looks like a clone of Instagram.

“My partner Kirill Filimonov and our group of developers were already ready for this turn of events and decided not to miss the opportunity to create a Russian analogue of a popular social network beloved by our compatriots,” Alexander Zobov, the initiative’s public relations director, reportedly wrote on the VKontakte social network.

In the wake of Instagram’s ban, many Russians are also turning to Telegram and VKontakte. However, with many Kremlin critics now moving to Telegram, some experts have warned Telegram might soon also be targeted by Russian authorities.

Not coincidentally, internet searches for VPN services in Russia have skyrocketed over the last week (according to research companies).

Meta said on Sunday that it would narrow its content moderation policy to stop Ukraine users going as far as to call for the death of a head of state.

Nonetheless, Russia, which has banned Facebook too, “has opened a criminal investigation against Meta and prosecutors asked a court to designate the U.S. tech giant an ‘extremist organisation,'” Euro News reports.

Max Verstappen Calls Bulls**t On Drive To Survive’s ‘Fake Rivalries’
Max Verstappen Calls Bulls**t On Drive To Survive’s ‘Fake Rivalries’

It’s hard to overstate just how successful Formula 1: Drive To Survive has been.

The Netflix documentary series – which gives a unique behind-the-scenes look at the drivers and teams competing in the Formula 1 World Championship – has completely transformed the sport. It’s been responsible for bringing in a huge number of new fans, particularly in America, and turned many F1 drivers into mainstream, international superstars.

But it’s not been without its criticism. Fans and insiders alike have criticised the series, now in its fourth season, for misrepresenting race outcomes and relationships within the F1 paddock… And there’s perhaps no greater critic of Drive To Survive than Max Verstappen.

The reigning World Champion refused to participate directly in the filming of the last two seasons, citing his unhappiness with how himself and other drivers have been depicted by the show. He’s called Drive To Survive “sensationalist” and has said “a lot of it is fake.”

Now, he’s gone even further, expanding on his displeasure during a recent interview where he’s accused Netflix of manufacturing rivalries between drivers.

“I watched two episodes [of season 4], but I was not very impressed. It’s just not my thing, faking rivalries,” the 24-year-old Dutchman tells BBC Sport.

The Red Bull driver singled out season 4’s depiction of McLaren teammates Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris‘ relationship – which was painted as being quite fractious and petty – as being particularly disingenuous.

“Lando and Daniel are two great people I know – they have really great characters and immediately at the second episode it looks like they are not very friendly to each other, and for me that’s not correct and that’s why I’m also not a part of it.”

It’s worth pointing out that many fans think the trigger for Verstappen’s snubbing of Drive To Survive was how they depicted his relationship with Ricciardo when they were teammates at Red Bull in the first season, too. The show depicted the pair as being fierce rivals, really painting Max as a villain, when in reality they have an exceptionally close relationship – with the Australian being perhaps Verstappen’s best mate on the grid.

“At one point [it helps to bring in an audience] but that effect also runs out. I think we’re beyond that stage now and it’s more like a reality show in my opinion,” Verstappen elaborates.

“Plus it takes way too much time anyway. I need to focus on the racing and have private time and not spend another half an hour at the race weekend when they need to talk to you.” A very Kimi Räikkönen attitude…

Regardless of what you think about Drive To Survive’s editing, it’s uncontroversial to say that Verstappen’s absence doesn’t do the show any favours. That’s particularly true for this most recent season, which saw his rivalry with Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton reach boiling point and the young Dutchman secure his first World Championship (under controversial circumstances). We’re missing a lot of the story.

As Jalopnik put it back in 2021, “it sucks, because Verstappen is like this unspoken presence around which everything in Red Bull circles, and you miss out on that important team dynamic that tends to prize Verstappen over everyone else and thus makes Red Bull the cutthroat atmosphere it is.” It doesn’t help that the series focuses more on Red Bull than most teams, too.

Ah well. All we can do is make sure we all tune in to this year’s F1 season so that when season 5 of Drive To Survive comes out next year, we’ll be able to sort the facts from the fiction.

The 2022 Formula 1 World Championship kicks off this weekend with the Bahrain Grand Prix.

American RV Owner’s Petrol Pumping Video Shows Insane Cost Of Road Tripping Right Now
American RV Owner’s Petrol Pumping Video Shows Insane Cost Of Road Tripping Right Now

Petrol prices are through the roof right now, and car drivers (and airlines) are feeling the pinch of rising oil prices at the pump.

A video currently doing the rounds on Twitter, of a motorist filling up their RV, sums the situation up perfectly. The video is credited to Instagram user @rileyfit1 (and was also posted on Twitter by Barstool Sports).

The video shows the motorist filling up their RV with petrol. The video features a text overlay that reads: “You think filling up your car is bad… guess how much it cost to fill up our RV.”

“Pumping with expensive gas,” the man says to the camera, before showing viewers the pump. He and his companions then leave for a bit, because refuelling takes a little while. They eventually come back to the pump and show that to fill their RV with 170 gallons (about 643 litres) of petrol cost them US $944 ($1,294 AUD).

Not everyone has sympathy, however, with one Twitter user suggesting that if you can afford the RV, you can afford the fuel (“We’ve got guys complaining who own $600k RV’s now”).

Another wrote: “You have an RV like that, and you’re towing a 50k plus Jeep Wrangler, you aren’t worried about gas prices.”

It’s not the same for everyone though. Many are struggling with the price hike. One user wrote: “Actually false. My parents currently own an RV with a car being towed and everywhere they go it’s now minimum $800 to fill up.”

“They now plan on selling it this spring. When you have a budget you usually try not to spend more then the budget allows, unlike the government.”

It’s not just gas prices either. Air fares may rise too. Forbes reported recently: “Airfares will probably rise for your next vacation,” explaining, “airfares [are] expected to rise 7% this month.”

“While experts predict ticket prices will climb even higher, there’s some uncertainty about whether it will happen sooner or later,” Forbes added. “Energy prices are putting pressure on airlines to raise fares, but demand is also weakening in some markets. (Even when energy prices fall, airlines don’t necessarily lower their fares.).”

Want Bigger, Stronger & Healthier Muscles? Try The 90-Degree Technique
Want Bigger, Stronger & Healthier Muscles? Try The 90-Degree Technique

The fitness industry is full of coaches, trainers, experts and influencers all attempting to pass on their knowledge to help us make the most of our workouts to get fitter, stronger and healthier. And, because we deem these ‘experts’ to be speaking from a position of authority and knowledge, we blindly follow them – which as we’ve discussed before, can have disastrous effects.

So, what if we told you that there is a much more effective way to perform bicep curls, squats and other press and lift movements to enhance muscle growth; and one that we’d argue you’ve never heard of or thought about before?

According to fitness coach and founder of Advanced Human Performance Dr Joel Seedman – who has previously informed us of the best deadlift we’ve never done – there is and it all revolves around 90-degree angles.

Taking to Instagram with a few videos for demonstration – and further information provided on his website – Joel says the 90-degree joint angle is a “hidden training secret” and one the “fitness industry has kept silent on for decades.”

In his Instagram Reels, Joel adds, “Much of what is currently advocated & employed in the fitness industry is not based on science or research. Instead, it’s based on what coaches have been implementing for decades, not because it’s best but simply because it’s how they were taught because that’s how their coaches before them were also taught.”

“When we examine sub-sciences of kinesiology including structural muscle physiology, biomechanics, neuromuscular physiology, physics & more, we see that optimal range of motion for most movements involve 90-degree joint angles.”

“The concept that more is better & that max ROM (range of motion, which generally speaking is not currently what’s used) is not only NOT based on science but in fact goes against every element of science we know.”

“We never want max of anything in physiology including hormones, enzymes, chemicals, reactions & yes, even range of motion. Instead, we want the optimal level. That optimal level is 90-degrees.”

Why does Dr Seedman claim 90-degrees is optimal, then?

“90-degrees maximises muscles activation, strength gains, muscle hypertrophy, joint health & athletic performance, not to mention full-body stability, mobility, symmetry & more.”

“Just because something works and has been done a certain way for decades doesn’t mean it’s optimal. Good is the enemy of best.”

In some further information on his website, Dr Seedman explains how to use the 90-degree angle when performing squats. He says, “an optimal squat involves approximately 90-degree joint angles. This is typically 10-30 degrees above parallel.”

“The type of squat and loading position will tend to dictate how close a 90-degree joint angle and parallel squat are to each other. Typically, a 90-degree barbell back squat will be moderately above parallel, whereas a 90-degree front-loaded squat will be closer to parallel.”

In the case of bicep curls, we’re typically told to curl the bar, dumbbells or whatever other weight we’re lifting, up towards our chin. As in, we should start with our arms down in front of us, and curl the weight through a range of 180-degrees until our hands are underneath our chin.

Joel says this isn’t optimal and that using a 90-degree form “maximises cross bridges,” – the term used to define how our muscles actually contract during a lift or press – “which ultimately dictates the level of motor unit recruitment and how well we stimulate the muscle for strength & hypertrophy adaptations.”

It’s a big idea put forward by Joel, but one that appears to be able to back up through years of research and real world case studies. It’s certainly a simple training technique to employ next time you’re in the gym, so why not give it a go and see if you notice a quicker increase in muscular size.

Netflix Cracking Down On ‘Moochers’ Using Someone Else’s Account
Netflix Cracking Down On ‘Moochers’ Using Someone Else’s Account

While we may all joke about it, there are many of us here in Australia who definitely go against Netflix’s terms and conditions, and happily share our account details with people who live outside of our household.

And now, after Variety, first broke the news Netflix may have introduced new rules regarding account sharing, the streaming giant has confirmed it will roll out new restrictions on a global scale.

Back in March, Director of product innovation at Netflix, Chengyi Long announced that Netflix is launching a ‘test’ in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru where Netflix users will only be able to share their account with people outside their household if they pay “a bit more”.

Following the test, Netflix will now implement the system in Australia and across the rest of the world early next year. Chengyi Long said:

“We’ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans.

While these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households – impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.”

The new system will mean one account is only available for people who live together in a single household.

The reveal was made during the streaming service’s recent quarter earnings update, which also revealed it has increased its number of paying subscribers in the US.

Under the new rules, paying subscribers who share an account and don’t live together, will be able to add up to two people they don’t live with. It is not clear exactly how much this will be, but during the ‘test’ is came to an extra US$2.99 per month; those two people will get their own profile, personalised recommendations, login and password.

If these people are ones who already have their own profile connected to a paying subscriber, then their personal recommendations, watch lists and other favourite content will be ported across.

But for those who are already struggling financially to keep their account running, the company has announced that a cheaper subscription plan with ads is coming soon. Anyone who has been using Netflix through a personalised profile on someone else’s account can now transfer that profile to their own account.

What’s still unclear is how Netflix will track who’s using the account and where they live – and whether this is an invasion of privacy… Many Netflix users watch Netflix while commuting to and from work, so surely the streaming platform will still allow people to use their account when they’re not at home; but again, it is slightly alarming if Netflix can tell exactly where we are while using their app.

With the end to account sharing now on the horizon, let’s hope Netflix does enough to persuade users to get their own accounts, so it can continue to churn out original content.

Nightmare News For Australian Coffee Drinkers
Nightmare News For Australian Coffee Drinkers

A cup of coffee could cost $7 bucks a cup by the end of the year,  David Parnham, president of the Café Owners and Baristas Association of Australia, has warned the nation.

Parnham, speaking to the ABC, said global shortages from catastrophes in places like Brazil (which has experienced frosts) and “certain growing conditions in some of the coffee growing areas” could jack up prices.

“The cost of shipping has become just ridiculous,” he told the ABC. “It’s nearly five times the container prices of two years ago due to global shortages of containers and ships to be able to take things around the world.”

He also said the prices are currently artificially low (right now the standard price for a coffee is about $4), and have been for some time.

“The reality is it should be $6-7. It’s just that cafés are holding back on passing that pricing on per cup to the consumer.”

David Parnham

“It is overdue and unfortunately it can’t be sustained, and at some point, the consumer has to bear that,” Parnham told the ABC.

The news prompted some Australians to proclaim it’s a “good time to quit.”

Parnham isn’t the only one predicting a price hike. Steve Fulton, a coffee importer who runs Soho Coffee Roasters, recently told 7NEWS.com.au: “If we said $4-$4.50 for a small coffee was the average, I would expect you’d see that at $5-$5.50 imminently.”

Mr Fulton said that besides droughts in coffee-producing regions, the price increase could be attributed to high fuel prices caused by the conflict in Ukraine, which are yet to truly sink their teeth into Australian consumers.

Enjoy that $4 coffee while it lasts.

Mercedes Formula 1 Boss Toto Wolff Makes Shocking Personal Health Admission
Mercedes Formula 1 Boss Toto Wolff Makes Shocking Personal Health Admission

Everyone assumes super successful people effortlessly have their sh*t together. But Mercedes Formula 1 boss Toto Wolff says he has been seeing a psychiatrist since 2004. He told @timessport he reckons he’s had more than 500 hours of therapy and that “I have suffered mentally, I still do.”

He added: “Getting help is a way of overcoming my problems, and it has helped me to access untapped potential. I’ve never had any problems with the stigma. Some of the most successful people are very, very sensitive and very, very sensitive means very, very vulnerable.”

“High profile people who seem to have everything but are struggling, I think we have an obligation to say we’re getting help and it’s ok to get help.”

Toto Wolff

It’s not the first time Wolff has talked about mental health. Last year he told a reporter that mental health is “tremendously important” to him and said living in glamourous environs doesn’t automatically make you happy. With these kinds of comments, Wolff is helping break down the stigma around mental health, and helping people realise it’s ok – indeed it’s normal – not to have your shit together.

The comments left next to @mercedesamgf1’s sharing of Wolff’s interview on Instagram suggest many people were inspired by his words.

Comments left on @mercedesamgf1‘s page after they shared Wolff’s interview. Images via Instagram.

It’s ok not to be ok. What’s important is you know it’s ok to seek help, or open up to someone, in order to manage your feelings of insecurity. It’s also a good reminder from Wolff that vulnerability can be a strength. It’s not something you should be ashamed of.

McLaren’s Lando Norris is another F1 figure who has been open about his mental health (and whose mental health admission in 2021 was a wake up call for millennials everywhere). Norris entered his first official Formula One race at just 19, and faced a lot of public scrutiny very early in his career.

He told journalists on British talk show This Morning: “If I have a bad weekend, I just think ‘I’m not good enough’. When these things add up over a season, and then you have the social media side of it all, that can just really start to hurt you.”

As Autoevolution reports, “F1 is a challenging sport that has a lot of moving parts. Teams, suppliers, sponsors, regulators, and partners need to work incredibly well together to achieve that coveted win at the end of the season without any doubts or controversies.”

“It’s no wonder that all this pressure can at some point break a person if there’s no work done with and for your mind.”

Autoevolution

Beyond sport, it’s an important recognition that many men are making of late – looking after your mental ‘wellness’ should be similar to working out a muscle – something you do regularly and without shame.

Hopefully we get to a day soon where having a genuine chat with a mate or a therapist (or meditating) is seen as no bigger deal than going to the gym or a physio.

As the stats show, we’re getting closer to breaking down the stigma – and that’s something to be applauded, and something statements like Wolff’s and Norris’ help with – but we’re not quite there yet.
