We all have heroes whose workouts we try to copy in the hope of gains. The Internet isn’t short of them either; you’ve got Hollywood royalty such as The Rock and Chris Hemsworth, all the way through to Instagram fanatics like Salt Bae or Jo Lindner.
But what about those who really understand what it takes to succeed as an athlete? Enter: Anthony Minichiello. The former Sydney Roosters winger turned fullback, who is now a retired legend, is someone who is living proof that fitness is not just for a minute. In fact he has some fans on Instagram saying he’s: “retired but looks younger than most current.”
So what’s his secret?
He understands that a few bicep curls and bench presses are not going to provide you with holistic health. Especially in your 40s. He’s also still a bit of a shredded unit. So, how do you get ripped like him? DMARGE interviewed Mini to find out what he used to do during his playing career to keep himself at the highest level, and how he continues to maintain his fitness now he’s a regular civilian.
Reflecting on the aforementioned bicep curls and bench presses, Mini says he doesn’t actually hit the weights room all that often: “I like to mix my training up nowadays from one strength session a week, mixed with 3 to 4 bodyweight MiniFit workouts.”
He adds: “Weekends are a bit of fun, with some gymnastic strength training [Mini was formally a gymnast in his younger days]. Core workouts pretty much every night in front of the TV, and tennis once or twice a week.”
“I would do some type of these every day. On some days it could just be a 6-minute core session in front of the TV, it all depends how my body is feeling.”
Today, we’re inundated with the sheer amount of fitness content available to us, it can often be tricky to find out which route is best for us individually. You’ve got those who only hit the weights, some who prefer cardio, the bodyweight workout brigade, along with the many other types of fitness discipline such as pilates and yoga.

Anthony too has trialled and errored: “I’ve definitely changed my training since playing professionally. During my career I wasn’t a big guy, so I had to push heavy weights to mix it with guys that were 120kgs with lots of speed and power, on top of running, running and more running.”
“These days I don’t run anywhere near as much as I did back then. I’ll still go on the odd run, but tennis is my sport of choice now. I like being outdoors and keeping the body moving, so I try to do anywhere between 10,000 – 25,000 steps every day.”
“Movement is key to longevity, so even on some days where I haven’t worked out, but I have done 15,000 steps, I might just do a 6-minute core session at night and I’m happy with that.”
But, this doesn’t necessarily mean Mini’s not always on the lookout for new and inventive ways to mix up his training regime. He tells us: “I like variety with my training. One day I might do a HIIT workout, the next one handstand conditioning, then tennis the day after. I don’t mind BFR bands either.”
“I pretty much have all the stuff at home, from BFR to dumbbells, barbell, rings, parallettes. My daughter loves gymnastics so we now have full gym bars and air track which is fun! I used to start my day with a 7 a.m. session, 5 days a week, but once you have kids it changed everything, so learning to be adaptable is key.”
“You want to get into a healthy movement habit, something every day even if it’s a stretch at night before bed. It will set you up for long term muscle and connective tissue health.”
That’s some great advice for anyone in their 40s (and beyond) looking to stay fit forever. And if you found that interesting, why not have a read of Mini’s nutrition secrets and intermittent fasting, too?

Every week an new dating trend seems to rear its dogfishing, beard baiting, Gatsbying head.
We started with the easy ones like ghosting and pedestalling (not to mention jibing) and now we’re moving on to something even harder to wrap your head around: midriff baiting.
Midriff baiting, as we like to call it, involves posting a picture of yourself on Hinge or Bumble (is anyone on Tinder anymore?) with a plunging neckline.
Though I’m hardly one to judge (if I was the judgemental type I wouldn’t have humiliated myself trying to mimic Chris Hemsworth’s beard or wearing every f*ckbois favourite footwear for a week), if you put a gun to my head and told me to pretend to be a dating sage, I’d probably tell Australian men on dating apps to stop trying to look like Russell Brand.
But that’s just me. If you have the courage to try and look like you’re a model in Milan in 2017, go for your life.

My reasoning? It’s quite a tricky look to pull off.

Captions like “I’m looking for a bad bitch” don’t help. But the most surprising thing I encountered on a recent Friday night browing Hinge and Bumble was the relentless number of men with top button phobia.
Of course, it’s something you would expect maybe, every one in 20 or so guys to do. And you could even argue buttoning your shirt up all the way is even weirder. You could also argue, I suppose, that people’s “this is weird” attitude to anything outside “the norm” is holding Australian fashion back.
But I was astonished that, for a time period during my scrolling, almost 1 in 5 guys were ‘midriff baiting.’ What sorcery is this? Maybe the apps thought that I secretly wanted to see more men’s midriffs? Maybe I really do want to see more men’s midriffs.
I’ll admit it was confusing.

While some rescued the move with solid captions (“as seen on my mum’s fridge), others simply left me baffled.

Maybe I’m jealous my abs don’t look like that? Maybe I should shut the hell up – men should be proud of their pecs, damn it (god knows some guys spend enough time working on them in the gym). But I’m not talking about how big or small your pecs are. I’m talking about style. And – from what I understand (which admittedly may not be much) – given the collective cultural hangover we all operate under (you know: the one which dictates men showing their chest is sleazy), midriff baiting kind of comes off as, well, sleazy…
The only thing that’s for certain is that midriff baiting is not hanging in the ether 10-15 years ago. It’s still around. If it’s got you as hot under the collar as me, check out the following photos and decide for yourself if it’s an abomination, or so ridiculous it’s cool.

A video has emerged online reminding us you don’t need a fancy gym membership or thousands of dollars worth of gym equipment at your home to keep fit. Especially if you look at old Italian blokes for inspiration.
Case in point? The video at the top of this article. The clip shows a man working out the Italian way in Sicily. He can be seen doing an angled lateral raises with two rocks, toe touches at the water’s edge and a bit of casual boulder throwing. Who needs a medicine ball? This is ‘incidental on purpose’ exercise at its finest.

The video was posted to Instagram by account @italysegreta – a monthly online magazine based on the appreciation of the small pleasures of the Italian life – and credited to photogapher Jonna Bruinsma.
“How to start your day, working out the Italian way!! We like to keep it simple,” the magazine captioned the video.
Its followers appeared to be impressed with the Italian mode of working out. One wrote: “The best.” Another commented: “I love this simplicity ..”
Another said: “My head tells me that this will be us at the seaside next year,” (translated from Italian).

Society loves to find ways to divide the population. Whether it’s by way of the political party you support, your opinions surrounding religion or whether you’re ‘team tomato sauce’ or ‘team barbeque,’ finding ways to put forth our views to an opposing group is something many people thrive off.
One of the most hotly contested differences in opinion is the carnivore vs vegan diet. Time and time again we see vegans and activists staging protests in public centres, only for meat-eaters to tuck into a KFC or some other fast food, taunting the vegans in the process. It’s completely unnecessary behaviour, but as we said, it sends a clear message.
Speaking of which, Liver King, the man who is very much in favour of a meat-first diet comprising liver, bone marrow, testicles and pretty much every other edible part of an animal, has just made his opinions on the vegan lifestyle (one that’s based off processed food, anyway) very clear.
But of course, being the extroverted American man he is, the Liver King uses an air rifle to shoot a Beyond Burger – a plant-based burger “that looks, cooks, and satisfies like beef,” – to really make sure those watching truly understand his views on the vegan lifestyle.
RELATED: It’s Still Possible To Get Ripped On A Plant Based Diet. Here’s How
Although, judging by the caption on his video, the Liver King appears to be more judgemental of processed foods, rather than the vegan lifestyle as a whole.
“There’s only one way I’m coming into contact with the Beyond Meat patty. That’s with a rifle in my hand, shooting the beefless beef and its health halo into the…Wait for it…Beyond,” he says.
“Precisely where it (and other heavily processed substitutes) belong.”
He adds: “If you’re a vegan dominating life, thriving w/ robust energy, drive, mental acuity and free of low manhood, cavities, depression, anxiety, infertility, autoimmune and chronic disease, then stay the course and keep kicking ass!” His words of course insinuate that those who choose a vegan lifestyle may suffer from some or all of the related health effects.
“If you’re not, simply try the 8 ‘vegan-friendly’ Ancestral Tenets (Sleep, Move, Shield, Connect, Cold, Sun, Fight & Bond).”
RELATED: Liver King Is The Man Getting Jacked, Living Like Our Ancestors
He then attempts to once again preach the power of eating liver.
“If you continue to struggle, try lacto-ovo vegetarianism,” – the most common type of vegetarianism which allows for the consumption of dairy and eggs.”
“If you continue to struggle, try some good ‘ol fashioned Liver (raw or cooked) and let there be light!”

Tyler, the Creator is a man of good taste.
The rapper, fashion designer and agent provocateur has been shaping youth culture and style for the best part of a decade. From popularising brands like Fucking Awesome and Supreme in the early 2010s to almost single-handedly reviving ‘preppy chic‘ in the late 2010s/early 2020s, Tyler’s always been ahead of the curve when it comes to fashion.
In recent years, the tastemaker (real name Tyler Okonma) has also discovered a passion for vintage cars – collecting rare and tasteful rides like his Fiat 131 Abarth, Lancia Delta HF Integrale and immaculate BMW E30 M3 – as well as a keen eye for vintage watches.
His latest timepiece purchase is yet another indicator of his exceptionally good taste. Tyler was spotted wearing a rather rare and unusual vintage Cartier at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s annual Art + Film Gala earlier this month: a Cartier Tank Obus Quadrant. It’s a model that even seasoned watch fans might not have heard of, but one that’s definitely worthy of our attention.

One of the more unusual incarnations of the famous Cartier Tank, the Obus is a perfectly square watch, topped and tailed by so-called ‘fancy lugs’ for a little visual flair. The Quadrant variant of the Obus (which is sometimes considered a model line in its own right) features a thick bezel with Roman numerals flanking a smaller, detail-less dial.
We have it on good authority that Tyler’s watch is actually Lot No. 10 from the recent 88 Cartier auction held by Monaco Legend Auctions on the 16th of October earlier this year. Dating from the 1980s and boasting a quartz movement under the hood (much like the profligate Must de Cartier Tanks from this era), its blue champlevè enamel numerals contrast strikingly with the watch’s yellow gold case and red leather strap.

We also know how much Tyler paid for the thing, too: €9,100 (not too shabby). The Tank is one of the most iconic dress watches of all time, but the Obus Quadrant is a rather obscure choice. Really, it’s peak Tyler – especially the fact that he picked it up at swanky Monaco auction, likely himself, rather than just some jeweller. Nicely done.
Tyler’s got a real taste for Cartiers, it seems. He also owns a Santos-Dumont as well as a rare Cartier Crash. Like his Obus, they’re all yellow gold on leather straps. He might be an endless innovator, but he sure appreciates a classic combination…

Everyone loves a story where someone defies the odds. When someone overcomes adversity, or has a specific goal in mind, and doesn’t stop working until they achieve that goal, it provides plenty of inspiration for the rest of us. Too often we’ll tell ourselves things such as “I’ll start my diet tomorrow,” “I’ll join the gym next week”, or “I’m not good enough, there’s no point in me even trying.”
But these are simply limiting thoughts. As we’ve seen before, particularly with incredible body transformations, turning your life around really is a case of mind over matter, with one German man recently overcoming and recovering from surgery to get himself a ridiculously ripped rig.
The latest inspirational story to catch our attention is that of African basketball fan Nkwain Kennedy Lamiress. Nkwain – who hails from Cameroon – has used his personal social media platform to illustrate his non-stop work ethic in order to achieve his dreams of playing professional basketball.
His account is inundated with videos documenting his training, whether it be to work on his strength or practice shooting hoops. What’s clear from his videos, is that Nkwain isn’t letting the fact he lives in a war-torn country hold him back. In fact, it could be the factor to actually give him some assistance. Those of us who live in more well-developed countries could well take it for granted, and because we have easy access to training facilities, we can choose to start our journeys whenever we want.

Nkwain doesn’t have access to such luxuries and so has to improvise, as this particular video shows. He’s built his own ball-return chute for his basketball hoop, to help speed up his free-throw practice, and he ties straps around his waist and to some tyres, to help improve his strength and stamina when running and dribbling a basketball.
Other weight improvisation techniques include taping water bottles around his ankles and carrying large sandbags on his shoulders.
What’s also apparent from this particular video clip is that he is always having to train and practice outside, regardless of the weather. Although, other videos on his Instagram account do show him training in an indoor facility.
Ultimately, it’s not easy for him, and as Africa News has previously reported, “Without proper facilities, the 20 year-old trains using makeshift equipment, and techniques he’s taught himself from watching video clips of professional players doing their drills.”
“Sometimes Nkwain has to abandon training altogether and run to safety as government forces and rebels exchange gunfire,” according to Africa News.
Regardless of the political activity in Cameroon, Nkwain doesn’t let it hold him back from working towards his dreams, which he says is to play for the Los Angeles Lakers. “The NBA team I wish to play for is the LA Lakers. It is because LeBron James inspires me a lot. I just want to learn a little bit about his mentality before he retires from the game. I just want to get that little piece of what he has, what makes him great,” he relates.
The takeaway? As Nkwain says himself on his Instagram, “the distance between a dream and reality is called action.” The only person stopping you from realising your own dreams is yourself.
