Everyone’s thought about going on a date with a celebrity, but few of us are bold enough to shoot our shot. Even fewer get a response. But even if you do land yourself a date with The Rich & Famous, as tennis sensation Eugenie Bouchard just revealed, it’s easy to screw things up.

Enter: Bob Menery, sports commentator and social media star, who managed to land a date with the Canadian tennis player and social media star Bouchard, but completely screwed the pooch by posting about it too much on social media.

Menery, whose vulgarity-laced comedic commentaries of golf and other sporting events has catapulted him to over 2.7m Instagram followers, asked Bouchard out during an Instagram Live chat she was having with popular American sports journalist Allie LaForce.

Bouchard agreed to a date after Menery pledged a $4,000 donation to charity, at LaForce’s suggestion. Their first (virtual) date was live-streamed for Menery’s podcast Zapped, and then the two met in person in Las Vegas.

Things were looking good for Menery, but his incessant self-aggrandizing about his romance with Bouchard backfired spectacularly. On a recent episode of Menery’s podcast, the former world #5 took great pleasure out of telling Menery his constant updates alerted a competitor to her availability, news.com.au reports.

“I went on a date because of you. I just wanted to let you know that your obscene posting may be backfiring,” Bouchard joked.

“Someone who only heard of me because you were posting about me asked me on a date and we went on a date. I’m not giving you any details, I just wanted to let you know.”

“Keep posting… I’m hoping more just flood in.”

Absolutely brutal.

Beyond providing yet more evidence of Bouchard’s impeccable social media (if not on court) performance, this tale holds a lesson everyone can learn from, no matter who you’re dating.

Where Menery and others trip up is not keeping things cool. We’ve written before about how playing ‘hard to get’ can actually have tangible results… And on the flipside; how oversharing and failing to ‘calm your farm’ can sabotage a relationship.

“Oversharing of a relationship may suggest insecurity and a need for an audience, attention or acceptance but on the flip side may suggest that they are very secure and have complete indifference to the views of others, are not influenced by the judgment or knowing of others,” Relationships Australia couple’s counsellor Jennifer Douglas told DMARGE exclusively.

So either you come off as desperate and insecure, or you come off as a cocky arsehole who doesn’t care what people think – neither of which are ideal if you’re trying to woo someone successfully.

Fingers crossed the next person Bouchard finds isn’t quite so boastful.

For such a comparatively small market, Australia is awash with car brands. From stalwarts like Ford, Honda and Mercedes-Benz; more exotic offerings like Peugeot, Great Wall or Škoda; all the way up to high-end marques like Lamborghini, Porsche and Rolls-Royce, Aussies are spoiled for choice.

One of many decisions prospective car buyers consider when shopping for a new motor is how much resale value any given car will retain over time. Depreciation starts as soon as a car rolls out of a showroom, and it can be incredibly aggressive: luxury brands in particular can lose tens of thousands from their resale value after only a few thousand clicks on the clock.

With the economic forecast grimmer than it’s been in a very long time, it’s a question that’s looming larger than ever in the minds of car buyers. How do you make sure you don’t end up buying a financial liability?

DMARGE spoke exclusively to Mike Sinclair, Carsales‘ Editor-in-Chief, who shared some key tips on how to avoid getting stung by depreciation.

“Look for brands that don’t resonate with most Aussies… [for example] brands that have left the market and models that were overpriced to start with.”

“Early EVs haven’t fared well either. Think of the Mitsubishi iMiEV… $60K [new] for no range and golf kart performance.”

It’s also worth considering the type of vehicle you’re interested in purchasing, RedBook.com.au General Manager Ross Booth explains.

“Used vehicle depreciation follows the market trends, with passenger vehicles having the greatest depreciation, SUVs the least, and electric vehicles less than conventional ICE [internal combustion engine] vehicles.”

“Within the segments, any brand that is either new to the Australian market or has announced they are leaving, or recently returned are among the lowest-performing with used values,” Booth reaffirms.

“Some examples are INFINITI, [with] the Q50 and the Q60; MG, with the GS and 3; SsangYong, with the Tivoli, Korando and Rexton… [and] in the ute market, Foton and Mahindra. From a luxury market perspective, the BMW 7 series has amongst the lowest used resale values.”

How To Pick A Winner

So we know what brands to avoid… What brands should you invest in if you’re concerned about depreciation?

Keeping an eye on where the Australian car market is heading is key. Vehicles that are gaining popularity now will demand higher resale values in the future, and body styles that are on the way out will also lose value quicker.

“We see the market trends over the next five years continuing to move towards SUV, with many more models and segments,” Booth reports.

“The ute market will continue to grow, with bigger utes the trend and in the declining passenger segment, a continued move to hatchbacks from sedans. Diesel engines will continue to decline, in particular in passenger vehicles with an increase in hybrid models with improving used values.”

“The electric market in both new and used will remain very small until major improvements in the pricing equation, [and] exception being ‘sports’ EVs such as Tesla and the Jaguar I-PACE.”

As a general rule, the well-established Japanese and Korean brands are likely to weather depreciation the best. Mazdas and Kias tend to hold their value very well in particular. On the luxury end of the market, Lexus and Porsche are outliers that hold their value in a market segment that typically attracts severe depreciation.

Another thing these brands have in common is good customer service and after-sales support. Vehicles from brands like Jeep or Volkswagen which have earned a reputation in Australia in recent years for being a pain in the arse to deal with will also be hit hard by depreciation.

Of course, there are some factors independent of a car’s badging that will affect its future sales price. Mileage, trim level, condition, colour, transmission and model year can all cause a car to appreciate or depreciate faster.

And all things considered, depreciation isn’t the only thing you should consider when buying a new or used car. Booth puts it best:

“Future used values are only one factor when looking at motoring enjoyment, otherwise everyone would be driving a Toyota!”

“This is a man’s world” is no longer a phrase that can be said without copping some sort of hate or protest. The fact is, times are a changing and the world we live in now is one that needs to be far more accepting of gender, cultures, race and sexual orientation, to name but a few.

It’s with that in mind that companies in all industries do their bit to acknowledge that change and Swiss luxury watchmaker Hublot has just thrown its hat into the ring.

It comes in the form of a Big Bang timepiece (nothing new there) but in an entirely new ‘Millenial Pink’ colour that is quite simply jaw-droppingly stunning.

Produced in partnership with Italian businessman and heir to the Fiat fortune – and occasionally controversial – Lapo Elkann and his Garage Italia custom design agency that “develops projects, products and unique personalised experiences for brands, companies and private customers”, this latest Hublot timepiece has been launched to blur the lines between traditionally has been considered ‘normal’ and what now needs to be considered normal in the world of timekeeping.

Of course, pink has long been associated as a colour for women, but as has been proven time and time again – including by us here at DMARGE – pink is most definitely a colour that guys can own. As the adage goes “real men wear pink”.

Hublot says the new colour is “not in the exclusive realm of women, nor that of men, but truly a symbol of a completely new generation. This special hue marks a seismic shift which will change the status quo.”

But what about the watch itself? Hublot timepieces, the Big Bang, in particular, are known for their intricate design niceties and this model is certainly no different. Rocking a 42mm case, which, in true company style is made from lightweight aluminium that is both anodised and satin-finished, is the embodiment of premium, both to look at and to touch.

Hublot’s engineers have been especially considerate with the proportions of this Big Bang, with the company claiming it will comfortably sit on any wrist, large or small, thus being “Gender Neutral”. We’ve previously seen celebrities such as Harry Styles and Timothée Chalamet step out gender-crushing outfits, so it’s pleasing to see a high-end watch manufacturer join in with the movement.

Once on, time is displayed by way of the company’s HUB1280 Unico Manufacture self-winding chronograph movement. This movement is made up of no less than 354 components and boasts a power reserve of 72 hours.

Not only has Hublot catered to all genders with this Big Bang, but it caters for individual preferences too by supplying it with two different straps: one made of rubber that sports a deployment buckle made from titanium and covered with a layer of case-colour-matching pink aluminium; and the second making use of a mix of Velcro and knitted PES (polyester) fabric.

This strap is secured by a “sporty buckle” in millennial pink anodised and polished aluminium. Both straps can be interchanged quickly and easily thanks to Hublot’s One Click system.

If you like what you see (and we expect you do) you’ll have to be quick to secure one of these US$20,900 timepieces, as it will be limited to just 200 pieces.

Obscure Portuguese Operator Makes History With First Ever ‘Cargo A380’

We’ve had Air Canada gut their Boeing 777’s and Lufthansa rip seats out of its A330s to make way for cargo, but up until now the A380s of the skies have escaped the same mauling.

Of course, morally, Lufthansa and Air Canada should be applauded for their smart solutions to an inactive fleet (the change helped transport medical goods, after all). But aesthetically it was a shock to the eyeballs.

Following along the same lines, Portuguese charter operator Hi Fly just made history by creating the first ever “cargo A380.”

Hi Fly temporarily removed passenger seats from an A380 (the only one in its fleet) to make way for more cargo, “making it the world’s first A380 to be converted for freight,” CNN Travel reports.

It now offers over 300 cubic meters of capacity and can fly with almost 60 tons of cargo.

To put this in perspective, that’s a heavier load than the Beluga XL, Airbus’s gigantic, whale-resembling freighter airplane, can take.

The newly converted jet is being used to move medical and protective equipment to aid the fight against The Pandemic, with Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Montreal in Canada, and Tianjin and Wuhan in China being its most recent drops.

It could also mark the beginning of the end for the A380: “This aviation first is perhaps a last hurrah for the A380, as Airbus announced last year that it would stop deliveries of the superjumbo in 2021,” CNN Travel points out.

It remains to be seen whether this particular jet will go back to carrying passengers once the planet stops coughing or whether Hi Fly will retire the aircraft. However, the latter is definitely on the cards.

In fact, other carriers and manufacturers are currently grounding A380s and stopping orders of their construction, due to the growing belief they will be too expensive to operate in the recession that will inevitably follow this pandemic.

If Hi Fly choose to start using the A380 for passengers again though, all they’ll have to do is put the economy seats back, because, “like most other airlines temporarily reconfiguring their planes, Hi Fly only removed economy class seats as premium-cabin seats have more parts and are harder to disassemble/reinstall,” (The Points Guy).

“Other interior elements like galleys and lavatories were also left intact for when the plane returns to normal operations.”

Here’s hoping those normal operations can resume as soon as possible.

Ramos’ latest workout suggests that he’s taken some inspiration from the training F1 drivers do, debuting a bizarre-looking head exercise that’s not as strange as it appears to be, whilst captioning it, “This is the reason why… WORK!” apparently in reference to Madrid sitting pretty at the top of the table, one point clear of Barcelona (and with a game in hand).

Head / neck exercises like this are crucial for F1 drivers to help build up muscle strength. When you’re spending up to two hours pulling g’s on dozens of corners every lap, you need to have a strong neck.

It’s also useful for footballers looking to improve their header game. Ramos’ game-making headed goal in the 93rd minute of Real Madrid’s 2014 Champions League final match against Atlético Madrid is the stuff of legends – clearly, he wants to repeat the same magic again in 2020.

Real Madrid currently sits comfortably on top of the La Liga table with only four matches left in the 2019-2020 season. Ramos himself scored the winning goal in their 1-0 game against Athletic Bilbao last Sunday. With the Champions League Round of 16 on the horizon, Ramos is sure to want to stay in tip-top shape.

This has been pointed out time and time again, by Yacht fans and (more modest) boat owners. Enter: the following video, posted recently on luxury yachting Instagram fan page Top Yacht, which shows a 400 million dollar (according to Forbes) Superyacht cruising along the south of France.

Besides providing a jaw-dropping glimpse of what life is like on The Other Side, it also reveals an awkward truth: Super ‘yachts’ like Sailing Yacht A depend on their diesel engines most of the time.

“Never seen a video of it with its sails open” one fan pointed out. “Sailing yacht,” wrote another.

Intrigued, DMARGE exclusively interviewed Istanbul-based luxury yacht manager Candaş Balci, to ask: is there a reason these vessels so rarely open their sails?

“This is a very spectacular design [Sailing Yacht A] and this sailing yacht is very famous after being introduced 5 years ago,” Balci told us. “They have very big propulsion engines.”

“It’s not meant to be sailed – it’s not like a classic sailing yacht – they just make it a sailing yacht so they can say it’s the biggest sailing yacht in the world.”

“In some very few moments I’ve seen photos with them open.”

Would it be possible to sail around the world on a superyacht like this? According to Balci, the answer is “yes.” However, it wouldn’t be as practical as some of the other designs on the market.

“It wouldn’t be so comfortable or fast… For cruising with sails [alone] maybe you can go like 5 knots of 6 knots, but it would take ages to go all around the world.”

“These yachts have very big fuel tanks. Sailing is… an optional thing.”

Whilst understandable, this may explain why the superyacht industry is finding it so hard to shake its bad environmental reputation, even as the boffins make leaps and bounds in Promethean progress.

It’s no use being able to harness the elements if you don’t use them.

It also, much like this Dubai yacht owner’s “eco-friendly” golfing solution, highlights the arbitrary line we draw when it comes to our environmental impact – we don’t want to be conspicuously destroying things (i.e. toodling around the world on a giant motorboat, or hitting golf balls into the deep) but we are happy to waste resources to build something fun and pretty.

Letting his hair grow out, he then tried a curly faux-afro look, apparently inspired by his Juventus teammate Juan Cuadrado's coiffure.

Clearly he didn't keep that one around too long, because he's been spotted recently tying his hair back in a man bun.

Another commenter joked, "Ronaldo has had more hairstyles than Alexis has scored goals this season," referring to Inter Milan forward Alexis Sánchez.

In any case, the new do didn't do much to help Ronaldo on Wednesday's clash with AC Milan, where the Juventus striker's team lost 4-2.

Stylistically, though, we think Ronaldo's on the up: forget what the haters are saying, Cristiano – we love an old school look.

New Study Finds Surprising Change In Australian Travellers’ Attitudes

It’s not our aversion to burnt espresso and it’s not a reluctance to drink a latte out of a cracked glass cup – it’s worse.

In grim news for European and Japanese tourism boards (which have pulled out all the stops to entice Aussie travellers in recent months), a study has found Australians – even if they were given the chance to travel – are keen to stay at home for the immediate future.

This marks a departure from the traditional perception that Aussies are gung ho travellers, always looking for a good time overseas.


Though, as recently discussed at length on Traveller’s “Flight Of Fancy” podcast, our intrepid attitude will likely return, the million-dollar question is when?

The Travel and Tourism Trends Report, recently released by PayPal, brings Australia’s changing attitude to overseas travel (if not the whole ‘when’ question), to light.

The study looks at the impact of COVID-19 on the travel and tourism industry, as well as consumers’ outlook towards travelling now and post-pandemic.

The report reveals that despite having been unable to travel overseas for months now, and despite the restless feet Google search trends (and Apple Maps data) showed we were having as early as May, almost 1-in-3 Aussies would now rather stay local and support the Aussie tourism industry, even if they could go overseas.

Key findings from the report include the following:

Aussies want to support local business

Aussies are keen to support the local tourism industry. The Travel and Tourism Trends report found over a quarter of Aussies (29%) said even if they could go overseas, they’d rather support the local travel and tourism industry. This is even more pronounced for older Aussies; of those aged 68 and over, 37% would rather support the local travel and tourism industry.

Younger Aussies crave the beach

Aussies are dreaming of a beach getaway: Beach holidays are the top domestic getaway choice for Australians (36%), with Gen Z (45%) and Gen X (39%) particularly eager to hit the surf and sand.

Older Aussies want an old fashioned country town

For older Australians, a holiday or country town seems most inviting with 33% of Baby Boomers saying they want to escape to a country town for their first domestic getaway (something Qantas’ new Sydney to Orange route will help with, no doubt).

Gen Y are keen to go au natural (sort of)

The report found Gen Y are twice as likely to head to a natural wonder like Uluru (16% are keen to do this), when compared to the national average (8%).

Family is key, once again

Overall Australians are most likely to go on a domestic family holiday (40%) or a short stay holiday (38%), the study found.

Men have different priorities in a getaway

Right now, according to the stats, 35% of men were “a lot less likely” to pick a family getaway than women (35% of whom would pick a familial trip).

The younger generation (born between 1995 and 2015) would rather holiday with friends

Gen Z are significantly more likely (25%) to be booking a trip away with their friends compared to the national average (14%).

Many Australians are looking for a bargain

Australians are anticipating discounts on accommodation and tours, but expect travel costs to be high. Specifically, the stats show a quarter of Aussies (26%) expect more discounts on accommodation and tours, and 30% think travel costs, including flights, will be higher due to the impact of COVID-19.

Australian travel providers are seeking to provide bargains

Almost three-quarters of Australian Travel and Tourism businesses (70%) said they are planning to (or are already offering) more discounts and sales to support their recovery from the crisis.
