America isn’t short of world-class chefs. New York, for example, has no less than 76 Michelin-starred restaurants. But cooking in the home is likely going to be a completely different ball game. Everyone should be all too aware of the generous portion sizes ‘Murica likes to stuff their faces with.We admit the country isn’t alone, however, as we can all get a little slack in the kitchen, with jar sauces being a prominent feature in the pantry. But now there is one Australian chef who has burst onto the scene during quarantine (after his live stand-up show was postponed and rescheduled) who wants to put an end to all that, and we think America could learn a thing or two from him. We’re talking about ‘Nat’s What I Reckon’, a series of cooking videos from Australian resident Nat (his surname is kept a tight-lipped secret), who has been creating videos for a good 10 years now. He’s always had a sense of humour and has even performed live stand up comedy shows. He’s always been a foodie and loves cooking for his mates, and as soon as the pandemic hit and he noticed people panic-buying jar sauces, he decided to do something about it.You wouldn’t necessarily think it looking at him though, as his appearance is more grunge-metal guitar player than fully accomplished chef. His videos are hilarious and riddled with Aussie humour – some Americans might not quite get it, but we’re confident the swearing will translate just fine – and the best part is the dishes he creates look genuinely appetising, and they’re incredibly easy to follow along with too. Some of the dishes he tackles include bolognese, which he aggressively tells us shouldn’t include mushrooms (nor zucchinis, eggplant, hair or cars). He comes out with other gems such as “cook it for a minimum of 45 minutes, maximum forever”, and “cook the pasta until it’s f**king cooked”.Within the humour and Australian phrases such as “good on ya champ”, Nat delivers the cooking method in an easy-to-follow way, so there’s no risk of messing the dishes up. It’s certainly a different way of learning to cook, but we think it’s because of the way he talks to the camera is what makes him so engaging. We’ve tried his lamb shoulder dish ourselves and we can confirm it was one of the best things we’ve ever cooked. So give his channel a follow and learn how to cook some delicious meals in the process. And as Nat says himself, “F*ck jar sauce!”

The phone vibrates. You comb your hair. You check your phone: Two minutes ’til Zoom. Just time to pour yourself a coffee, chuck your feet on your desk and smirk.
If you’re now working from home, you might be luxuriating in the advantages: no Opal fees, no spending $300 a month on overpriced chicken salads, no worries.
That’s great. But the extra electricity and internet you’re now using could be outweighing the couple hundred bucks you’re saving by not commuting.

With the end of financial year looming, you really ought to get your money in order.
Why? Well, imminent global recession (even Warren Buffet ain’t spending right now) aside, although not spending $4.50 every day on coffee is good, not spending $4.50 a day on coffee and raking in money for the ‘depreciation’ of your laptop and desk chair is better.
How do you do this? You get your head around expenses. While this is a topic we have previously explored with Fernando Prieto, CA at Solid Partners Accountants & Advisors, we did this in the context of someone who usually works from the office.
These being unprecedented times, and with now, it seems, almost everybody (except those in essential services) working from home, we got Fernando on the phone to ask exactly what you can and can’t claim when working from home, specifically with those who have just started doing it in mind.
First up, Fernando told us the government has changed the system slightly to accommodate those working from home due to COVID. As the ATO website reads: “As the COVID-19 situation develops… We understand tracking these expenses can be challenging.”
“So, we will accept a temporary simplified method (or shortcut method) of calculating additional running expenses from 1 March 2020 until at least 30 June 2020,” the ATO advises. “We may extend this period, depending on when work patterns return to normal.”
This simplified method, Fernando explains, basically involves claiming 80c for every hour worked. According to him, this tends to be the easiest way for individuals who don’t normally work from home to make their claim.
Fernando concedes you might, depending on your circumstances be able to claim back more by using one of the other methods (mentioned later on in this piece), but the new system is the most straightforward (and was introduced with exactly this purpose in mind).
Essentially, you can add up all the individual claimable expenses via one of two options: fixed-rate or actual cost. Which is best for you? Fernando says “it all comes down to the documentation that you keep.”
“You’re not locked into claiming one way or the other – figure out which is most advantageous to you – keep a diary, do whatever it is you need to keep a record over at least a four week period.”
“Keep track of what you’ve been doing in March until June. If that’s working from 9-5 the whole time you then multiply that by 80c an hour (this fixed-rate used to be 52c, now it’s increased to 80c).”
On top of that, it’s a good idea to keep a record of business vs. personal phone calls etc, for when it comes time to claim your phone bill.
All that in mind, here’s your ultimate guide to what you can and can’t claim when working from home due to lockdown.
Claiming a deduction
To claim a deduction for working from home, all of the following must apply:
- You must have spent the money
- The expense must be directly related to earning your income
- You must have a record to prove it
- This means you can’t claim a deduction for items provided by your employer, or if you have been reimbursed for the expense
If you are not reimbursed by your employer, but instead receive an allowance from them to cover your expenses when you work from home, you must include this allowance as income in your tax return.
Expenses you can claim
If you work from home, you will be able to claim a deduction for the additional running expenses you incur. These include:
- Electricity expenses associated with heating, cooling and lighting the area from which you are working and running items you are using for work
- Cleaning costs for a dedicated work area
- Phone and internet expenses
- Computer consumables (for example, printer paper and ink) and stationery
- Home office equipment, including computers, printers, phones, furniture and furnishings – you can claim either the full cost of items up to $300 or decline in value for items over $300.
Expenses you can’t claim
If you are working from home only due to COVID-19, you can’t claim:
- Occupancy expenses such as mortgage interest, rent and rates
- The cost of coffee, tea, milk and other general household items your employer may otherwise have provided you with at work
Calculating running expenses
There are three ways you can choose to calculate your additional running expenses:
- Shortcut method ─ claim a rate of 80 cents per work hour for all additional running expenses
- Fixed-rate method ─ claim all of these; a rate of 52 cents per work hour for heating, cooling, lighting, cleaning and the decline in value of office furniture; the work-related portion of your actual costs of phone and internet expenses, computer consumables, stationery and the work-related portion of the decline in value of a computer, laptop or similar device.
- Actual cost method ─ claim the actual work-related portion of all your running expenses, which you need to calculate on a reasonable basis.
For more information, click here.
Shortcut method
You can claim a deduction of 80 cents for each hour you work from home due to COVID-19 as long as you are:
- Working from home to fulfil your employment duties and not just carrying out minimal tasks such as occasionally checking emails or taking calls
- Incurring additional deductible running expenses as a result of working from home
You also don’t have to have a separate or dedicated area of your home set aside for working, such as a private study, to claim using this method.
The ATO says the shortcut method rate covers all deductible running expenses, including:
- Electricity for lighting, cooling or heating and running electronic items used for work (for example your computer), and gas heating expenses
- The decline in value and repair of capital items, such as home office furniture and furnishings
- Cleaning expenses
- Your phone costs, including the decline in value of the handset
- Your internet costs
- Computer consumables, such as printer ink
- Stationery
- The decline in value of a computer, laptop or similar device
“You do not have to incur all of these expenses, but you must have incurred additional expenses in some of those categories as a result of working from home due to COVID-19,” reads the ATO guidance page.
“If you use the shortcut method to claim a deduction for your additional running expenses, you cannot claim a further deduction for any of the expenses listed above.”
You must also keep a record of the number of hours you have worked from home as a result of COVID-19 (e.g. timesheets, diary notes, rosters. etc).
The ATO adds “if you use the shortcut method to claim a deduction and you lodge your 2019–20 tax return through myGov or a tax agent, you must include the note ‘COVID-hourly rate’ in your tax return.”
Records you must keep
If you use the shortcut method, you only need to keep a record of the hours you worked at home, for example timesheets or diary notes.
If you use the other methods, you must also keep a record of the number of hours you worked from home along with records of your expenses. For more information on what those records are see Home office expenses.
First up: the usual rules apply, which means you can apply the following techniques over the next few months to give yourself the maximum number of claimable expenses possible.
- Renew your (work-related) magazine subscriptions
- Pay the interest on your investment property
- Make a personal contribution into your super fund
- Donate to charity
- Invest in your business
- Get a new laptop
If you meet the requirements, all these expenses can be written off (at least partially) against your tax bill.

We’re going to hit Australians right in the nostalgic feels with this latest car article, as it relates not only to a piece of quirky automotive history but a memorable advert from the 90s as well. Yes, today it’s all about the Goggomobil. Specifically, this 1957 Goggomobil TS300 Coupé, available on Carsales right now. This sweet and innocent-looking car was manufactured between 1955 and 1969 under the ownership of the now-defunct Hans Glans GmbH. The company was bought by BMW in 1966 so that it could own its patents, as Glas was the first company to use a timing belt with an overhead camshaft in the automotive space.Glas produced other cars besides the Goggomobil, and even enlisted the design services of Pietro Frua – who designed the Maserati Mistral – for the 1700GT. The company wasn’t able to compete with emerging competition from the UK and eventually succumbed to BMW’s takeover. But we digress, back to the Goggomobil. It was released in three variations, the T Sedan, TS Coupé and TL Van. The engine in all three variations was mounted behind the rear wheels – so it’s essentially an early Porsche 911 – and it rocked independent suspension all round using coil springs with swing axles. The model on sale here is the TS300 Coupé which rolled off the production line in 1957. TS250 and TS400 Coupés were also built, with the number reflecting the rough engine size in cubic centimetres. A total of 66,511 Coupés were built. One of the interesting style choices for the TS300 was rear-hinged suicide doors, so you could step in and out of it with elegance and class (and made it just like a Rolls-Royce).
The Goggomobil didn’t exactly ‘go-go’ when it came to speed, however, as the 298cc engine delivered 15hp for a top speed of 85 km/h (53mph) – although British magazine The Motor managed to get 59.2mph out of it during testing, but took 27.9 seconds to reach 50mph. At least you won’t have to worry about ever receiving a speeding fine. But speed isn’t the aim of the game with the Goggomobil, it’s a classic to be appreciated. There’s a good chance you’ll remember the Goggomobil from a Yellow Pages advert broadcast in the 90s in which Scottish-born Australian stage actor Tommy Dysart had to relentlessly ring around several mechanics to find someone to help fix his Goggomobil. He famously spelt out the car’s name “G O, G G O”. Eventually, someone on the other end of the line asked if he was talking about the Dart, but he wasn’t.The Goggomobil Dart was an open-top two-seater sports car developed and built in Sydney, Australia from 1959 to 1961 by Buckle Motors Pty Ltd. It was based on the same chassis as the regular Goggomobil but featured a fibreglass body instead of the steel used in the German-produced models. Approximately 700 Darts were ever produced. This Goggomobil for sale in Sydney is the only one currently available on the entire Carsales network, so it could be your only chance for some time to own an iconic piece of history. And for $28,899 it’s most-definitely affordable. Head to Carsales now to enquire.

Qantas has extended flight cancellations until the end of July as it adapts to the economic impacts of The Virus. After The Mail Online reported last week June tickets were still available to be booked online (sparking rumours domestic travel could return sooner than anticipated), The Qantas Group this morning announced Qantas and Jetstar will extend their existing flight cancellations.Domestic and Trans-Tasman flight cancellations will be extended from the end of May through to the end of June, while international flight cancellations will be extended through to the end of July. However, Qantas also announced, “scope to restore some services at relatively short notice as restrictions lift.”Particularly with regards to domestic and Trans-Tasman routes (currently operating at about 5% of pre-crisis levels), these could be restored within a week’s notice if restrictions were to ease (and if demand were to return).

Of the changes, Qantas CEO Alan Joyce said the group was “optimistic” domestic travel would return earlier than first thought. However, he reckons international travel is still a way off.“With the possible exception of New Zealand, international travel demand could take years to return to what it was,” he said in a statement.Qantas and Jetstar customers impacted by the recent cancellations, Qantas says, will be contacted directly, and will now be able to split travel credits across multiple future bookings and use the credit over an extended period of time.Qantas also announced it has managed to secure a further $550 million in debt funding, on top of the $1.05 billion raised in March. This strong cash balance, along with a lower cash burn rate, are providing “headroom to manage through current crisis and recovery,” Qantas says.

The Group also gave an update on its liquidity status: “The Qantas Group today announces that it has secured a further $550 million in funding against three of its wholly-owned Boeing 787-9 aircraft. This follows the $1.05 billion raised in March against seven 787-9s.”
“Net debt is now within the middle of the target range, at $5.8 billion. The Group has no financial covenants on any existing or new debt facilities and no significant debt maturities until June 2021.”
“The Group has sufficient liquidity to respond to a range of recovery scenarios, including one where the current trading conditions persist until at least December 2021,” Qantas announced. “The Group currently has $2.7 billion in unencumbered aircraft assets and can raise funds against these if required.”
“As at close of business 4 May 2020, total short-term liquidity stands at $3.5 billion, including a $1 billion undrawn facility.”

As the world enters a period of unprecedented economic standstill animals are taking a break from humans.Venice has regained its magic, Bondi has had incredible shark sightings and black bears have reclaimed Yosemite. Now, as David Godfrey, Executive Director for the Sea Turtle Conservancy told CNN, sea turtles are thriving as Florida’s beaches remain empty.
View this post on Instagram
“With the beaches in Florida closed in an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus, researchers are seeing less plastic and waste, fewer people and vehicles on the beach and less disorientation for emerging hatchlings that’s caused by artificial lights on the beach.”Because of this, the sea turtles are able to nest in peace.Nesting season for leatherback turtles, the largest of all sea turtles, is happening right now, mostly in the central east and southeast coast of Florida, Godfrey told CNN.
“It takes about 60 days for sea turtle eggs to incubate and for hatchlings to emerge.”
However, during that time, the nest can get trampled, dug up or exposed to artificial light, which can harm the hatchlings.
With the current lockdown in place, that is no longer the case.“I think there is a strong likelihood that we will see decreased human-caused impacts on sea turtle nesting this year, which is a rare silver lining to this global pandemic,” Godfrey said. “It’s premature to try and use numbers to demonstrate what we all think and hope is happening.”What’s this mean? Basically, the numbers aren’t there yet, but the season is off to a good start.

What happens when the sea turtles’ eggs begin to hatch, if the beach has re-opened by then? The experts say this is unchartered territory.

As for now, here are the facts as it stands: in Juno Beach, 60 miles north of Fort Lauderdale there are 72 (counted) nests so far; 71 leatherbacks nests and 1 loggerhead.

Vacheron Constantin is one of the world’s oldest watchmakers, having been producing timepieces ever since it was founded in 1755. It’s fair to say then that in that time, it’s learnt a thing or two about how to make some seriously desirable wrist candy, whether it be down to the movement, complications – it’s responsible for making the most complicated – or materials used.Although unable to unveil its new releases for this year at the annual Watches & Wonder show, it hasn’t stopped the Swiss watchmaker from announcing a new colour combination for the Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin. The model itself isn’t new, it first arrived on the scene in 2016 and with each passing year, Vacheron has updated the colour and strap combinations. This year, the Ultra-Thin is available in pink gold with a blue dial for the first time.Ok, so that isn’t strictly true, as the watch has been available with a pink gold case and blue dial since 2019, but never with a matching bracelet. That is no longer the case with the latest addition. And the result is rather fetching if we do say so ourselves.Elsewhere it’s business as usual for this Vacheron timepiece, including Maltese cross-inspired bracelet links and the 18K 5N pink gold has been extended to the counters, hands and indicators too. Hiding within the 41.5mm case is Vacheron Constantin’s Manufacture 1120 QP/1 calibre, which allows the watch to have both perpetual calendar and moon-phase complications. This movement has had to undergo a miniaturisation process to get it to fit inside the ultra-thin case, and will happily show the correct day, date and month until 2100, when it will need correcting.
And as this is an Overseas timepiece, it gets Vacheron’s quick-release strap mechanism, meaning you can swap out the pink gold bracelet for either the supplied blue alligator leather with nubuck lining or blue rubber strap, without the need for additional tools. The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Perpetual Calendar Ultra-Thin will be available soon for A$155,000.

Let’s start with a disclaimer: some of our jobs will be completely unaffected post-pandemic. Even during it, essential workers are having to make daily commutes to ensure countries and economies can remain running as best as possible. That will only continue once the crisis is over and there will be professions that will still require people to head into the office.
This piece instead refers to those who have been fortunate enough to keep their jobs but have had to resort to turning their home into an office, away from the office. There has often been a stigma around people working from home. Do bosses think their staff are just going to become lazy and slack off when not under the watchful eye of managers? Probably. Do people who work from home feel like they can relax a bit more? Most definitely.
But all things considered, the global pandemic has had an unprecedented effect on the workplace, and getting things back to how they once were won’t be an easy task. Despite government payouts, some companies will have lost shed loads of cash during the lockdown, so may not have the finances to re-open their offices, or to re-hire furloughed workers.
The pandemic has also given rise to technology products such as Zoom, which has allowed workers to continue having meetings with their staff and clients. The infrastructure to move from the office to the home is most certainly there.
So will it, therefore, be possible for more people to be able to work at home after the pandemic has lifted, whether it be out of necessity or luxury? We spoke to Joe Ryan, a partner at Australian consultancy 4Twenty, to get his professional opinion as to how the workplace could change post-COVID.
Joe starts by telling us, “I think there’s definitely going to be a shift to people working from home.”
However, he admits it’s most likely the technology industry (it’s the industry he works in so it’s where his experience lies) that will see the biggest change, or at least, is the one that can afford to make the changes, “The mentality within the tech industry is a lot different from your traditional industries such as banking. The virtual mentality of the workers and the owners is you can work from home and you can be flexible, we want to be seen as offering a healthy work-life balance.”
After all, if parents had the option of spending a bit more time at home with their children and not have to pay for carers, they’re going to take it.
Joe continues, “But in banking, it’s very traditional. Bankers have to work in the city, they have to be in the city for meetings and networking, and they have to turn up to work in a suit, it’s just how it is. There are probably segregated offices, there’s no real comradery, no hot-desking or any kind of agile working space.”
As for how Joe expects to see the workplace change post-COVID, he adds “I do think people will have to shift to a work from home model to some extent, and those traditionalists will have had their eyes opened to a different way of working.”
“I do think the working at home environment will become more popular and the stigma around it will die off.”
As for whether more of us can work from home once the pandemic fully subsides remains to be seen. There will certainly be the argument from employees that they’re capable of doing it. It will be down to managers and owners to decide if they’re happy for the team to be split up. And to trust they won’t jump on the Xbox for several hours during the workday.

The current pandemic has put an end to pretty much all sport and caused an uproar in the process. If you somehow weren’t aware, just take one look at the headlines regarding the Premier League in the UK and you’ll soon understand (Liverpool deserve the title btw). It’s also brought a halt to the racing calendar, including Formula 1, although the high-profile racing series is confident it will be able to kick off the season in July before culminating in December. Of course, those plans are subject to change depending on the global situation. To help pass the time, some drivers have been getting in on the virtual racing action to keep their racing brains active. Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Alex Albon are just a few of the big names joining the races, which take place on virtual replicas of tracks on the regular Formula One calendar. There’s no multi-million prize fund on offer, nor are there trophies, but it’s designed to be a bit of fun, as drivers battle it out on the virtual track with ‘regular’ e-sports racers. But one man who has said ‘no thanks’ to virtual racing is Australian racing poster-boy Daniel Ricciardo. According to F1i.com, the man from Perth has decided to head to his family farm to train his whole body, as opposed to just his thumbs.Part of the reason the current Renault driver has said no to sim-racing is that he knows he’ll become a bit too addicted to it, “I just know with my competitive nature, if I got one, I’m going to be spending hours on it a day,” he told The New Daily.
View this post on Instagram
He added,
“And before you know, I’m missing training sessions racing these sims, and I feel that the training is more productive.”
That last statement is certainly one we can agree with, as Ricciardo has posted some of his recent training sessions on Instagram, and it’s clear he wants his body to be in fighting fit shape for if and when the F1 season does return. “I’m missing the racing and I’ve got that bug in me that I just want to go again, so I’m staying ready and that’s kind of my driving purpose.”We imagine Daniel wants to keep his mind and body in the best shape possible to keep his reflexes sharp and his stamina levels high to help see him through the races. He doesn’t want to be sat in a racing simulator chowing down on snacks and soft drinks. The Aussie driver is also trying to make the best of a bad situation during the lockdown and getting outdoors as much as possible to help around the farm, “I think I’m quite lucky to be on the farm. I’m not locked in an apartment with only really my phone or the internet as an escape,” he added.“I’ve even tried to introduce some phone detox days, where you don’t really use your phone because hours can go by and I don’t really want to get indulged too much in that.”The virtual Formula One series is scheduled to finish this month, but the group has said it will continue to run it should the global pandemic cause more races to be postponed or cancelled. You can follow the races live or catch-up on past races on the official Formula 1 YouTube page.
