It’s time to find your closest hipster for high-fives all-round. The latest research from Associate Professor Mike McCullough of California’s Polytechnic State University has found that craft beer may well be the healthier option to red wine.
“We all know that a glass of red wine is good for you, but it turns outs a pint of craft beer is better, it has got more good things in it,” Professor McCullough explained to AAP.
These “good things” that McCullough refers to includes niacin or vitamin B3, and brewers yeast which is known to lower bad cholesterol. The science behind why it has to be craft beer and not just any old standard beer is because the latter is less pasteurised in mass production, according to Professor McCullough.
“Your instances of heart disease and your instances of type 2 diabetes decreases on an amount that’s comparable, if not a little bit more, than if you are drinking red wine.”
Professor McCullough went on to explain that craft beer often received a bad wrap when compared to the better known health benefits of drinking red wine (reduced risk of heart disease and dementia). This was down to the unhealthy lifestyle stigma that’s often attached to beer.
“You associate a beer drinker’s diet with nachos and unhealthy eating habits but the trend with more differentiated beer and higher-end beer is that you are eating it with meals,” said Professor McCullough.
Australia’s craft beer scene has exploded in recent years with small brewers keen to bring their own unique taste to the market. This has further fuelled fans of the movement who have driven the industry to an estimated value of $500 million a year in Australia alone.
And now that you know that, it’s time to get educated on the right kind of beer thanks to our guide on what your choice in beer says about you.

New York, New York, it’s a hell of a town…and that’s particularly true when NYFW 2018 rolls in with some of the world’s finest menswear threads to date.
Whilst the formula is the same, New York’s own show is vastly different when it comes to wearable aesthetics. The Americans tend to leave behind the pomp of over the top dapper looks from Pitti Uomo for pieces that are a bit more dynamic and edgy.
Whilst big names like Tom Ford and Alexander Wang rule the runways inside, the real talent of consumer fashion tends to fall on the streets. Our pick of the New York crop sees the pioneering of triple denim (yes, that’s three denim pieces in one look), intersecting lines with heavily polished details, the integration of windbreakers, traditional coats in fresh hues and more geometric patterns than you can poke a protractor at.
Hell, even the bum bag has seemingly made its return to mainstream fashion. But enough chit-chat. Hit the gallery to see some of this season’s finest streetwear for men.

It’s finally here. It’s taken 62 years for Jaguar to resurrect one of their most iconic racing cars known as the D-Type.
The only catch? Just 25 brand new examples will be hand crafted by Jaguar-Land Rover Classic Works to fulfil the initial quota of 100 cars set back in 1956 (only 75 made it out the door before a factory fire halted production).
The new D-Type will call upon some of Jaguar’s most enduring car making practices of the golden era to complete the order. The car itself retains a rich racing pedigree thanks to three Le Mans 24 hour race wins accomplished between 1955 and 1957.
The 2018 version will follow this exact formula by retaining the original 3.4-litre six-cylinder XK engine and accompanying period-correct details. Those in the market for one will need to fork out serious cash considering one of the original 75 examples fetched US$19.8 million at an auction a few years ago. Buyers of the 2018 variant can choose between a 1955 short-nose spec or long-nose 1956 spec complete with Batman tail fin.
The retro racing mobile which looks like something out of a cartoon will make its official debut at the salon retromobile show in Paris.

Fans of fine Swiss watchmaking will no longer need to venture far with the opening of Australia’s first ever IWC Schaffhausen boutique.
The store located at 360 Collins Street will showcase IWC’s latest timepieces and astute technical ingenuity to the public. The prime location however is something that will truly make a statement for the brand in the local market.
“Selecting Collins Street in Melbourne as a location for our first IWC Schaffhausen Boutique in Australia was a logical decision,” says Brand Director of IWC Schaffhausen for Australia and New Zealand, Florian Gutsmiedl.
“With a large number of leading luxury brands already established on this luxury shopping street and nearby arcades attracting many tourists, the location is culturally appealing for high end shopping. With IWC Schaffhausen’s strong position in the Australian market, 360 Collins offers a home that truly reflects the status of the IWC brand.”
The boutique features strikingly elegant interior and exterior facades which are designed to maximise exposure to the brand. This means a blend of masculine tones and dark wood accents which work well with IWC’s watchmaking aesthetic.
Now the only thing we’re missing is a dedicated IWC whisky bar.

Elusive sneakers will soon be more accessible than ever with the announcement that online sneaker retailer GOAT is merging with sneaker consignment shop, Flight Club.
The major deal comes with a massive injection of US$60 million from investors in a move which should see the two companies dominate the online retail landscape in the $55 billion global sneaker industry.
Before the announcement, both companies provided a service built on delivering hard-to-find footwear. This service will continue ahead with each company maintaining their own brand whilst GOAT integrates Flight Club into its technology systems.
Eddy Lu, GOAT’s co-founder and CEO, said in a statement that, “the merger will allow us to significantly scale our online and retail operations to meet customer demand both domestically and internationally”.
According to Recode, a majority of the US$60 million funding will go towards buying out Flight Club shareholders’ stakes in the business. A GOAT representative however declined to comment, saying that the company does not discuss financial terms with the public. They did however confirm that the deal was completed with a combination of cash and stock.
The merger of the world’s most disruptive sneaker retailers was conceived from a mutual admiration of one another, GOAT co-founder Daishin Sugano told Business Insider. Sugano himself says that he was inspired by Flight Club, a store which began selling collectible footwear in Los Angeles and New York in 2005 which has amassed a cult following of sneakerheads.
“The reason GOAT exists at all is because Flight Club innovated the market,” Sugano said.
GOAT is no sleeping giant either. The mobile app which debuted in 2015 offers more than 400,000 pairs of kicks and is a direct competitor to eBay’s own sneaker store. They’ve succeeded thus far with a company valuation of US$200 million.
“We’re innovating the sneaker market with technology,” explained Sugano. By teaming up with Flight Club, “you have the future of retail,” he added.
Their investors also shared similar sentiments. Index Ventures is the firm that looked after GOAT’s latest funding round and its partner, David Rimer, believes that there’s massive potential in their investment.
“The sneaker market is…in [its] relative infancy,” Rimer told Business Insider. “The opportunity is really big”.

Love stricken globetrotters can now get their horizontal tango on at 35,000 feet thanks to Virgin Atlantic’s latest sultry seat configuration.
They’re called ‘Love Suites’ and they come with a dedicated audience. The two individual seats are placed directly next to one another and cater to those who want to eat or watch movies in close proximity to their special friend.
Any other activities embarked on is entirely up to the couple seated smack-bang in the centre column.
The Airbus A330-200 will carry the Love Suites in their first class cabin alongside the Solo Freedom suite (aisle access seats) and Solo Corner Office (individual window seats).
All of the seats in this class convert to lie-flat beds and include in-flight Wi-Fi access, barista-style coffee selection and something the airline calls “Happy Socks” – no relation to condoms, unfortunately – they’re actually just premium socks.
Those keen on treating unsuspecting passengers to their bouts of forbidden love will need to shell out big for flights from Manchester, England to locations like New York, Boston, San Francisco and Barbados.
Merry Christmas, you filthy animals.

Be still, classy tradie. The blue oval has finally revealed their latest performance ute in the 2018 Ford Raptor.
The Raptor is the steroid-injected variant of the Ford Ranger and sees a complete overhaul of suspension, chassis and engine components to bring a touch of off-roading prowess to the performance equation. The result is the menacing vehicle by Ford Performance that’s laid before you.
The goods come in the form of a heavily reinforced chassis and panels which includes a silver underbody protection plate made from 2.3mm high strength steel, a modified rear bumper with integrated tow bar boasting a 2,500kg brake towing capacity and 3.8 tonne recovery hooks.
Even the wheel arches weren’t spared with strengthened composite flares now making room for bigger wheels and increased suspension travel. Speaking of suspension, the conventional leaf spring items often found on the rear of utes have been tossed out in favour of Watt’s linkage suspension complete with a coilover spring setup. This is designed to improve lateral support whilst aiding handling. Up front the Raptor utilises Fox Racing’s long stroke dampers to really endorse venturing off the beaten track.
And finally we reach the power unit. The Australian delivered Ford Raptor will see a 2.0-litre twin turbo four-cylinder diesel engine delivering 157kW of power and 500Nm of torque sent to all four wheels. A 10-speed transmission will also be paired with Ford’s Terrain Management System (TMS) which has been custom tweaked for the Raptor to provide nine driving modes: Normal, Sport, Rock, Grass, Gravel, Snow, Mud, Sand and, wait for it, ‘Baja’ mode – the one dedicated to high-speed off-roading as inspired by the Baja Desert Rally.
The Raptor also gets a decent makeover on the inside with bolstered sports seats to keep the driver and passenger snug during more spirited sessions. The steering wheel also features a red centre mark strip, a touch normally reserved for race cars, just incase you forget your steering angle input.
Entertainment and connectivity meanwhile is sorted with an 8.0-inch SYNC3 touch-screen infotainment system boasting Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and navigation.
Ford Australia have yet to release any pricing figures on the new Raptor but given it’s the halo model, punters can expect to fork out over than $80,000 for the ultimate performance ute. That is, until it sees some competition in the AMG variant of the Mercedes-Benz ute.

It mightn’t be as prolific or extensive as Forbes’ annual rich list, but there’s a first for everything.
Since pioneering the publication of America’s richest people from 1982 (against much resistance), the iconic business magazine has today given the spotlight to cryptocurrency’s highest achievers. Whilst there’s no denying that the world of cryptocurrency has spawned a slew of overnight millionaires, it’s the billionaires that will really get people talking.
Forbes compiled their latest list with crypto’s hyper-volatility in mind by presenting their candidate’s net worth estimate in ranges (denoted *). These estimate figures take into account the holdings of cryptocurrencies (with some providing proof), post-tax profits from trading crypto-assets and stakes in crypto-related businesses.
This crypto rich list was then further categorised in five groups: idealists, builders, opportunists, infrastructure players and establishment investors.
Scroll through the gallery to find out who made the cut and a little about their background or hit Forbes for the full list of crypto’s wealthiest.

In simpler times, your office chair was an innocent piece of furniture. It cradled your cheeks while you strived for Inbox Zero and hugged your back while you hustled through overtime.
Then the headlines rolled in: sitting is the new smoking. Health experts everywhere slammed the sedentary lifestyle as a cause of myriad serious maladies, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer, obesity, and overall mortality.

Suddenly the wellness world was all about standing desks. Zealots preached a convincing gospel: standing at work can help you lose weight, boost your mood and alertness, improve your posture, reduce chronic pain, and lower your risk of developing various diseases. Health nuts were quick to swig the Kool-Aid.
But here we are a year or two after the hype, and guess what? Science is back to shatter your hopes and dreams for health once again, because apparently standing is killing you too.
At least three studies have found that prolonged standing can cause blood to pool in the legs, create excess pressure in the veins, hamper the body’s ability to detoxify itself, raise oxidative stress, and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Other studies have linked extended standing to chronic back pain and musculoskeletal disorders.
And here’s where it gets really harrowing. Researchers in Canada studied the standing/sitting habits of more than 7,000 workers in Ontario over the course of 12 years. They found that workers who primarily stand at work – think cashiers, bank tellers, and cooks – were actually twice as likely to develop heart disease as those who primarily sit.
So yes, sitting may be lethal, but standing might actually more lethal.
“In fact, the incidence of heart disease among those respondents who stood a lot at work (6.6 per cent) was similar to the incidence of heart disease among workers who smoked on a daily basis (5.8 per cent) or those who were obese (6.9 per cent),” wrote Peter Smith, a researcher on the study.
The key to longevity, according to the study, is to strike a healthy balance between sitting and standing at work – don’t confine yourself to a desk chair all day, but take a seat when your legs start to get tired.
Or just pound Big Macs and smoke a pack a day, because life is meaningless and nothing matters anyway.
