Apple’s Credit Card Pays You To Use It…But That’s Not All
Apple’s Credit Card Pays You To Use It…But That’s Not All

It was a big day for Apple today with the announcement of their first ever credit card – one of the slickest you’ll ever see – and it’s been designed and operated by the Cupertino tech giant in partnership with Goldman Sachs.

The framework of the card’s service will operate off Apple Pay which means users will be open to a host of features already operating on the platform. Let’s get into the juiciest bits of Apple’s latest service.

Apple Card’s Services

As we mentioned, Apple Pay is programmed into the card and this means users can manage their account via their smartphones.

Key features in the Apple Card includes:
  • Spend tracking via the Apple Pay app
  • Machine learning which enables Apple Maps to categorise your spending and locations through colour coding
  • Weekly and monthly spending reports are sent to users

In essence the Apple Card also doubles as a financial advisor by letting users know exactly where and when they’re dropping their hard-earned cash so that they can be more in control.

Apple Card’s Design

Design-wise the card is everything you’d expect from a aesthtically-focused company like Apple. It’s made of titanium for durability and lightness whilst the name and Apple logo are both laser etched onto the front. At the other corner is an embedded sim card. Glaring omissions include the conventional stamped credit card number and the owner’s signature. Apple deliberately left these out of the design for security reasons. Ironically it’s also what makes this credit card one of the best looking ones on the market today. Maybe not as good as a black one but close.

Apple Card’s Privacy

Apple continues to pitch its reputation on user privacy and this is a requisite on the Apple Card rather than an obligation. In the presentation Apple said that it will not be tracking user’s spending habits. That is: Where you buy things or how much you paid for it. On top of that there’s also the promise of keeping your data safe by not storing it and not selling it to third parties. Apple’s partners at Mastercard and Goldman Sachs have also made this pledge.

Apple Card’s Security

Having privacy disclaimers in place is one thing but Apple have gone one further by ensuring no one can use your card if it’s is lost or stolen. Every purchase made on the card needs to be authorised via Face ID or Touch ID alongside a single-use security code.

Apple Card’s Availability & Incentives

According to Apple there’ll be almost no disadvantages to using their credit card. It will come with:

  • No annual fees
  • No late fees
  • No international fees
  • No overdraft fees
  • Lower interest rates compared to industry standards

On the incentive front the Apple Card will add a percentage of every purchase transaction back to a customer’s Daily Cash program. Those keen to get their hands on the Apple Card will have to wait till the end of 2019 when it officially arrives.

Truths About Running That Only Top Athletes Understand
Truths About Running That Only Top Athletes Understand

Here’s a fact: the number of runners in Australia has more than doubled since 2005. Not coincidentally, events like Sydney’s City 2 Surf fun run have seen their popularity soar, with last year seeing over 80,000 people cross the iconic Bondi finish line. But what separates a great runner from the rest of the pack? Physical attributes? Mindset? Recovery time? Diet? Warm up?These are all great questions. Unfortunately, given our propensity to skip training sessions in favour of a Cadbury binge session, we felt ill-equipped to answer them. So we hit up Courtney Atkinson—an Olympian and endurance athlete, who is also currently gearing up for the charity Wings For Life World Run, to find out. Here’s what he had to say.

A post shared by COURTNEY ATKINSON (@mrcourtneyatkinson) on

Warming Up

You buy flashy kicks, monochrome shorts and 1980’s socks, look at yourself in the mirror and give yourself a wink. But then, disaster strikes: you remember your attractive, yoga pant loving neighbour (don’t pretend you don’t know who we’re talking about) always runs by at this time of day.Your confidence deserts you in a trice. What if she sees you rolling around in the grass, stretching your poorly-adjusted lumbar? What if she notices your inflexible hamstrings? What if she comes past as you are jogging on the spot like an absolute Pelican? You decide to skip the warm-up.While it doesn’t take an expert runner to know this is a bad idea, only true greats appreciate the true extent of its folly. And as observing the habits (and injury rates) of amatuer runners shows, knowing something is very different from implementing it.As Courtney Atkinson points out: you can’t just roll out of bed, slow-jog the first ten metres, and think you’re good to start rattling off intense shuttle runs.On the other hand, you don’t need to make it too complicated either: “Easy… just start off very, very easy. Walk the first 50-100m, maybe do a few walking lunges then start jogging very slowly for first few hundred metres and increase pace throughout run as the legs warm up and build pace throughout the time you have to run.”

“Maximize the use of the time you have. And bang for your buck in run terms you can get plenty of fitness out of solid build over 30mins.”

“Even if I was to do a very intense fast run session,” Courtney continues, “The first 20mins would be warming up following this pattern.”

Using Technology To Your Advantage

While many old school runners reckon fancy-pant gadgets are more of a distraction than a tool, Courtney says they can be really useful for keeping track of your progress and motivating you to achieve greater distances (and faster times).“I’d use the Strava app on your phone. Using the GPS in your phone this will track your speed, distance and route in real-time and then even better compare these metrics to other runs you’ve completed over the same route which helps monitor improvements. With the addition of your favourite Spotify playlist or current podcast, you’ve got what you need.”

“I’m currently running to the Umbrella Academy Playlist… a bit of old, bit of new and some good rhythm run tunes.”

Analyse Your Rest

How do you know how long you should leave between workouts? Do you wait until all soreness has gone, or does it depend on your goals? These are hugely under-rated questions that all runners—from novices to pro’s—should be asking themselves, particularly as there is no set formula. As Courtney tells us, “At the elite end of running this is very individual and there are times when you would change frequency and intensity depending for specific races. But in simple terms, think of it as STRESS + RECOVERY = IMPROVEMENT.”

“The key here is to make sure to recover enough from hard work.”

“As a general rule of thumb; taking a day of recovery and just jogging easy in-between a day of faster running or a long run is a safe training structure to follow,” he adds.

Keeping Mentally Sharp

According to Courtney, this can be broken down into three points:

  • Join a like-minded group. It’s enjoyable, can challenge your running and also adds accountability to turning up.
  • Have a race or time goal that you’re working towards.
  • Think about the environment in which you’re running. Sometimes a run in nature away from the hustle and bustle of roads and city can change the perspective on how good running can feel.

A post shared by COURTNEY ATKINSON (@mrcourtneyatkinson) on

Look After Yourself While Running

Courtney breaks this one down into three points, too.

  • Don’t over think it. Running should have flow and rhythm.
  • When it gets tough I like to break it down to the short goals to take the focus away from the how far is left. I use counting 10 steps on the left leg then 10 steps on right leg repetitively and aim to make those 10 steps the best I can.
  • Adjust your mindset: the focus moves from how far is left or how much it’s uncomfortable to how well can I execute the short process I’m focused on.

Make Sure You Recover Well

Again, Courtney is on hand with three insightful pointers.

  • It’s better to make sure you’re adequately recovered than short-changing yourself.
  • Consume some energy asap after finishing running, “To kickstart muscle and glycogen recovery.”
  • Get hands-on: “Some like massage and similar to help with recovery, for me I use rollers… to gentle rolling out my quads, calves and back daily. Not only for recovery but also for maintaining range of motion as I age.”

Running FAQ

What is the ideal running distance?

If you are a beginner runner, running two to four runs per week at about 20 to 30 minutes is enough. Every second week, increase your mileage to help your body adapt and to avoid getting hurt.

What is a good running form?

A relaxed and good form is required for a runner to achieve best results. A good body position is as follows - head over shoulders, shoulders over hips, hips over the mid-foot upon landing and arms swinging directly ahead.

Can running give you abs?

No, running will not give you abs, but it can definitely help reduce your belly fats. Running relies on your abdominal or core muscles, so you burn fats in your stomach and other areas.

Researchers Discover Why Lazy People Are Actually More Intelligent
Researchers Discover Why Lazy People Are Actually More Intelligent

If you’re the type to cruise through your working week with minimal effort, it doesn’t mean you’re dumb – it just means you’re damn lazy…and possibly intelligent, according to a study published by the Journal of Health Psychology. The study headed by Todd McElroy, who is one of the study’s authors and a professor at Florida Gulf Coast University claims that people who spend less time thinking are usually the more physically active type when compared to those who prefer to use brain power alone. This notion may seem familiar to the stereotype of the nerd getting picked last to be on a sports team, but now there’s actual scientific proof and it’s a little more complicated.McElroy and his team of researchers studied the physical activity of 60 undergraduate students and segregated them into two groups. One group consisted of those with a high need for cognition (NFC) whilst the other was a low NFC group. NFC, according to these researchers are the subject’s “tendency to engage in and enjoy effortful cognitive endeavours”.In other words the researchers found that people who enjoyed solving puzzles had a high NFC as opposed to low NFC people who opted for more mundane tasks that didn’t stimulate the mind. Coming to this conclusion involved pairing the subjects with a device similar to a Fitbit which would record their movements every 30 seconds. Each person accrued 20,000 points of data which was then used to compare activity levels across the two groups. The result? A substantial difference between people with low NFC and high NFC.During the week those with low NFC were much more active than those with high NFC. On the weekends the data would return less of a difference, indicating that both groups were more prone to lounging around.According to Vice who pointed to an article by the Independentcognition level isn’t a reflection of one’s intelligence. “People with lower IQs can enjoy a contemplative life and a good cognitive challenge, for instance. Similarly, plenty of people with high IQs dislike using their brain in challenging ways.”So what exactly is the reason for being lazy? McElroy believes simple motivation is a key factor in a person’s physical activities. People could be opting for longer bouts of physical activity when they’re avoiding a challenging mental task. Think going for a “ten-minute” walk when you’re supposed to be smashing out that 20-page report. Funnily enough the study concludes that society shouldn’t judge those who like to lounge around as lazy.“Just because you seem to be lazy, or what people would qualify as lazy, you actually might be engaging in some type of higher motivated thought,” says McElroy. On the flip side, those who are intelligent are similarly aware of the health risks of a lazy lifestyle even though they mightn’t act on it. “They are cognisant of it, but by the same token, if you’re engaged in thinking and thinking activities, you’re normally not moving.”McElroy and his researchers plan to investigate this subject further in a bid to discover what subjects are doing when they’re not physically moving.

The Economy Seat You’ve Been Waiting For Is Finally Here…On One Airline
The Economy Seat You’ve Been Waiting For Is Finally Here…On One Airline

Whether you couldn’t afford Business Class in the first place or you thought you’d save money by flying Economy (and subsequently thought better of it), we all wish there was a way to get a more comfortable cattle-class experience.

No, we’re not talking about Premium Economy. We’re talking about a bona fide lie-flat bed, where you get a whole row of seats (and a specially fitted mattress) to yourself.

Fortunately for transatlantic flyers, these ‘sleeper seats’ will soon be up for purchase on flights between the UK and the US. But only on one particular pond hopper: Thomas Cook, a Gatwick-based airline, which serves over 19 million customers a year.

With this play, available from May 13th on select flights to long-haul destinations like San Francisco and New York, they aim to make the most of the empty rows passengers normally fight over on off-peak flights (which is why the service will only be available on an ad hoc basis).

As reported by News.com, “It’s available for adults and children 12 years and older, though the airline suggests you would comfortably fit on the bed if you’re under 180cm.”

“While you can swap seats with someone else after you book, only one person at a time can use the sleeper seats.”

Introducing our new Sleeper Seat – making your long-haul flight just a bit more comfy.

A post shared by Thomas Cook Airlines UK (@thomascookairlinesuk) on

But the real question remains: how do you score yourself one of these bad boys? You take an extra $A375 onboard, and keep your fingers crossed. As The Sun reported, “You have to book your flights as normal and then pay the additional fee each way—as you might for additional luggage—to bag the entire row of seats to yourself.”

“During the flight, the cabin crew will build your ‘bed,” The Sun continued, “Which features a special mattress with fitted sheets, head rest, pillow, blanket and amenity kit.”

Not bad.

The only downside is, if you’ve booked a meal, you’ll have to wait until you’ve finished eating before your bed is made. So either get yourself on the CIA anti jetlag diet (read: fasting schedule) or have some patience.

But we’d argue it’s worth it because—meals aside—you can sleep throughout your whole flight, for much the same price as a Premium Economy seat which—according to our research—comes in at around $1486, compared to the combined price of an Economy ticket (A$1115) with a (A$375) ‘sleeper seat’ add on, which comes to A$1490, for a return flight to New York.

Oh and Premium Economy doesn’t let you lie fully flat.

As you might expect, these ‘sleepers’ will only be available towards the back of the flight, on Thomas Cook’s A330 planes. But—with any luck—the move will instigate competition, and other airlines will either copy or one-up the British carrier.

I Wore ‘Luxury’ Face-Moisturiser For A Week & This Is What I Discovered
I Wore ‘Luxury’ Face-Moisturiser For A Week & This Is What I Discovered

Lining up a bunch of “exfoliants” and “moisturisers” on my bathroom cabinet, I hardly felt like Wolverine. However, despite my initial reservations, it turns out smearing my face with sweet-smelling goo helped me embrace my masculinity more than watching any bout of UFC ever could.

Before we get ahead of ourselves: full disclosure — my bum fluff did not transform into a Viking-strength beard. My biceps did not mysteriously enlarge. My languid Aussie accent did not convert to gravelly Spartan tones. And — disappointingly — I did not assume any unearned powers of attraction.

However, on my week-long journey, I learnt a few important lessons. From overcoming stereotypes to (almost) vanquishing my resident eye-bags, a lot happened when I started wearing face moisturiser.

But first: the terms. Utilizing Jackson Miles’ $74.95 ‘Fig & Cedar’ Face Kit (consisting of two bottles: a cleanser and a moisturiser), I followed the kit’s instructions (apply each cream one after the other, morning and night) to see how fresh I felt.

Here’s what I learned.

The Placebo Effect Is A Real Thing

Upon my first application of the moisturiser, the moment it arrived in the post, without having completed the exfoliation that would usually come before it, I felt a tingling sensation from forehead to cheeks. I then ‘noticed’ an immediate glow in the mirror. Alas, my co-workers did not concur (or at least, no one commented on it).

I Like A Good Tingle

Arriving home that night, I’m ashamed to admit I ignored the instructions and applied the moisturiser on its own again, hoping to re-create that ‘pleasant prickling’ feeling. To my dismay: nothing. Nada. Rien de rien. Note to self: don’t chase the skincare dragon.

The Moisturiser Is Easier To Use Than The Cleanser

Resolving to take my challenge seriously, on the morning of day two I actually used the cleanser (this involves splashing it around your face with water, working up a laver and rinsing it all off) before applying the moisturiser on top.

While I had no difficulty with this process (some minor flecks of exfoliant on the mirror aside), it made me realise that if I were to incorporate “looking after my face” into my long term routine, I would probably just buy the $49.95 moisturiser on its own (and keep my fingers crossed for that elusive tingle).

Showers Are Over-Rated

Short on time? Rub out the sleep from the corners of your eyes, whack on some moisturiser and the only thing left to be desired fixed is your hair.

Having Bags Under Your Eyes Isn’t Cool

Much as I love the ‘zombie chic’ look, finding a way to make it appear that I am not a raging insomniac has actually been quite useful. While you may not become a Tinder sensation overnight, people are not as hesitant to engage you in conversation (lest they be struck by a pre-coffee death stare) or appear confused as to why you are not trying to eat their brains.

Following Simple Instructions Is Not That Simple

Despite reading The Face Kit’s instructions twice daily for a week, I am still not sure if it’s necessary to totally rinse off the cleanser (or if it’s ok to just get most of it off) before applying the moisturiser.

Anyone Who Uses The Word ‘Metro-Sexual’ Is Stuck In 2005

Forget the stereotypes; beauty products aren’t just for women. The male cosmetics industry is growing fast and — whether you put it down to LinkedIn or Instagram — is poised to boom.

Once You Start Looking Fresh, People Expect You To Always Look Fresh

Is there a downside to looking good? It makes your ‘off days’ more obvious. But as any personal trainer or fashionista will tell you: “No pain, no gain”.

It Is Possible To Overcome One’s Internal Prejudices

I have always told those that suggested I commit such atrocities as wearing sunscreen for my pre 9 am, 20 minute stroll between the train station and my office that I’m not afraid of looking my age, with everything from “Wrinkles are just dermatological wisdom” to “I don’t mind aging naturally” leaving my (cracked) lips.

Long term vanity goals aside, I can safely say the short term benefits of keeping your skin looking #fresh have helped me understand the attraction behind these kinds of products.

That said, before I sign up permanently, I’d like some more research to be conducted on whether using them affects your body’s ability to look after itself (much like over-using lip balm makes you more prone to cracked lips when you stop using it than someone that has never used it would be).

I also thought that looking attractive, as a man, came down to your genetics and the amount of time you spent in the gym. However, I can now confirm there is a sneaky third factor, which helps you accentuate everything from your wobbling jowls to your pretty cheekbones.

Just remember to rub it all in.

Chopard Unveils A Wearable Modern Classic With The L.U.C Chrono One Flyback
Chopard Unveils A Wearable Modern Classic With The L.U.C Chrono One Flyback

Chopard‘s latest Baselworld debut adds another dimension to the L.U.C collection in the form of two limited edition series of the L.U.C Chrono One Flyback. The Titalyt case variant shod in green will come in a limited run of 100 but the one we have our eyes on today is the more readily available grey version with a stainless steel case.

The updated model brings the traditional timepiece into a more modern wardrobe by trading the previous generation’s precious rose and white gold cases for a more user-friendly material. The case is now also smaller too, dropping from 44mm to 42mm for a more subtle look on the wrist. Chopard says this is their way of bringing to life the concept of relaxed elegance – and we don’t disagree.

On the dial is a grey hue with a fine vertical satin-brushed motif nicely contrasted with Rhodium-plated hour markers and chronograph counters. Driving the watch’s functions is the in-house L.U.C Calibre 03.03-L complete with COSC certification. It also boasts a 60 hour power reserve which is pretty impressive for a watch of this kind. As its name suggests, the L.U.C Chrono One Flyback chronograph features a flyback function enabling it to measure short times in quick succession by allowing the wearer to zero-reset the counters at a single press. The calibre is also equipped with a stop-seconds device enabling highly accurate time setting; in addition to an openworked 22-carat gold rotor, providing a clear view of the high-end hand-crafted finishing, while also optimising its winding power due to its high density.

Any modern classic deserves an equally attractive strap and the Chono Flyback gets it in the form of a slate-grey alligator leather strap with a brown alligator leather lining.

Technical Specifications

Mahershala Ali’s Shoe Game Proves Why He’s The Next Men’s Style Icon

With arguably one of the coolest names in the industry, Mahershala Ali is also making a statement with his wardrobe. It was just over a week ago when the House of Cards and True Detective actor showed up to The Hollywood Reporter and Jimmy Choo’s Beverly Hills dinner party in a killer double breasted-turtle neck combo and sockless piano loafers. The only way to describe the look? Sublime with a dash of suave. Ali isn’t new to making statements in the men’s style space. Most recently he was spotted at the Academy Awards in a clean three piece suit paired with a beanie and collarless shirt. Look even further down the track and you’ll find Ali in a mustard suit, a burgundy tux and a leather Berluti constable’s cap.Needless to say, he’s one of the more subtly audacious style figures in Hollywood’s current style circuit – and we welcome him with open arms. Let’s break down his look. Ali is rocking a perfectly fitted double breasted navy suit. The jacket is worn over a rolled navy turtleneck to make for one very cool look for colder seasons (Calvin Harris, Jeff Goldblum, Kevin Hart and Michael B. Jordan have also rocked this combo). Look down further though and you’ll notice a touch of summer – missing socks and heavy contrasted ‘piano’ loafers – a very elegant touch to a muted look. It’s these shoes paired to Ali’s classic suiting look that allows him to stand out from the crowd of suit and turtleneckers.Look even closer though and you’ll see a fine IWC Da Vinci Chronograph timepiece wrapped around Ali’s wrist (first image) complete with a matching blue dial. Coincidence or master stroke? Why not both?

Men Reveal What Really Stops Them From Committing To A Relationship
Men Reveal What Really Stops Them From Committing To A Relationship

The modern bachelor has to juggle two age-old expectations in the world of romance. The first of which comes from his mates (and most pop culture, from Shakespeare to Ian Flemming), which dictates the more you play the field the more attractive you are—to both sexes. As we all love hearing our single friends’ sordid stories, and as dating makes you better (or at least, less incompetent) at… dating, this is hard to deny. However, there is a contrary expectation coming from your parents, grandparents, and—shock, horror—some of the women you are dating, that you will settle down at some point. As women’s website Elite Daily recently admitted, there are a whole lot of chicas out there sick of hearing guys’ lame excuses as to why they can’t make themselves available for anything more than a 2am flight of fancy.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Elite Daily (@elitedaily) on

In light of this, we thought we’d consult the world’s largest repository of male wisdom (Reddit) to discover why men run for the hills at this crucial juncture.Fortunately, there is a thread dedicated to this very topic, where guys of all ages discuss what holds them back from a relationship, and what it takes for these feelings to be overcome. We also hit up Thought Cataloguewhich has an illuminting article on this topic, too. From feeling too much pressure to be single (and thinking deep down you can maybe do better) to not being that attracted to the individual who was hoping to couple up (and not wanting to tell them that straight up), these are the real reasons we blame daylight savings for being unable to commit.

We Are Legitimately Too Busy

While this is the most maligned excuse in the book, sometimes a man has too much going on in his life to give a relationship the respect it deserves, and so decides not to get into that relationship at all. This is even more likely to happen in instances when he is about to go through a major life change (i.e. last year of uni).As one man anonymously admitted in an open letter on Thought Catalogue, “I am graduating soon. I will have a career and a new chapter of my life starting. Not being selfish, but I am going to need to focus on me. Long days, train rides and trying to impress co-workers is going to take its toll on me. I am not going to have much to give into a relationship.”

“When I want to be in a relationship I want to give you 200% because that’s what you deserve, and that’s what I want to give to you. But I can’t. And I know you’re hurt in this situation, but know I am hurting a little too.”

We Want To Keep Our Options Open

The following excerpt from the same Thought Catalogue letter perfectly illustrates this: “It’s my last year of college. I don’t necessarily want to mess around with other girls, but I don’t want to have any worries or cares when I’m out at the bar. Shit happens. A few too many shots, some girl comes over and dances with me, and BAM.”

“She spends the night, and if we’re dating that’s cheating. I don’t want to be a cheater. Yeah we’re basically together, but then again, we’re not. And I let you know where I stand on the issue and give you the option to take it or leave it.”

It’s not all grey skies though, with one Reddit user explaining how if this is the case, just keep looking: “How do you commit to being monogamous? If you’re smart you find the person you want to commit to and who wants to commit to you, who you feel safe committing to.”

“Yes temptation is everywhere, but if it’s right you and your partner will prioritize your relationship above any fling.”

We’re Just Not That Into You

One of the harsh truths rejected men and women everywhere have to accept is that sometimes there is no grandiose reason for your casual partner’s disappearance. They were ready for a relationship; just not with you.

You Remind Them Of Bad Past Experiences

“Whether it has been you, my ex’s, or a combination; there’s things I have seen, and you have done that keep me hesitant on dating you,” (Thought Catalogue).

“Sure, everyone gets drunk and acts stupid sometimes. But you make it a habit a little too much. Like sure, the first time, maybe the second time you hit me with 18 calls in one night is whatever, but when it keeps happening it’s a turn-off.”

We Have A Sneaking Suspicion We Can Do Better

As one woman unfortunately discovered, despite her partner claiming to love her, he admitted he couldn’t help but think—if he had the opportunity—he would go out with someone he found more attractive. Fortunately, the good people of Reddit (seemed to) convince he she too could do better: much better…
