We’ve already gone public with our love for Tom Dixon’s homewares and shoe collabs. The British designer is now winning over our speed-seeking side with Tomoto, a custom Moto Guzzi bike that debuted at Design Week in Milan.Dixon has been a proud Moto Guzzi owner for 27 years. In fact, he credits his designing career to a passion for fixing motorcycles. To honour the debt he owes the brand, as well as the 50th anniversary of the V7, Dixon created this exclusive model.“The love of motorcycles has never abated,” Dixon told Dezeen, “and when I had the opportunity to visit the [Moto Guzzi] factory, which is an amazing document of 1920s manufacturing – it’s still made in the same factory, just 20 minutes away in the hills above Lake Como – I managed to convince them to let me tinker with one.”The resulting experiment was created in collaboration with renowned customiser Stefano Venier. Tomoto features eye-catching geometric rims made from untreated aluminium using digital punching technology. The same aluminium forms the petrol tank, which has “Guzzi” and “Tomoto” splashed across it in dripping pink paint.For the tires, which are bespoke, Dixon sought out another collaboration with a brand he calls “another fantasy firm, an Italian classic.” That would be the legendary Milan-based manufacturer Pirelli, with whom Dixon developed a variety of tread patterns.The finishing touch on this art-meets-industrial-design concept is the Fin, a Tom Dixon lamp that takes the place of the motorcycle’s headlight.Moto Guzzi presented Tomoto in Dixon’s Multiplex exhibition at Design Week, where he also showcased a sofa for Ikea and several new lighting designs. Sadly for fans, the motorcycle is just a prototype with no plans for mass production.

Armchair travellers, rejoice. Google Earth has just released a major update that makes it easier than ever to waste time on the internet while satisfying your wanderlust.
After two years of R&D, Google Earth’s fancy new features are here. The one that has everyone talking is the 3D map view, which lets you get up close and personal (and three-dimensional) with the world’s most famous landmarks. You can marvel at the height of Tokyo Tower or the depth of the Grand Canyon in greater detail than we’ve ever seen from Google, all from the comfort of your couch and your Chrome browser.
The update also introduced a feature called Voyager, an interactive collection of expert-guided tours brimming with videos and slideshows. Voyager is your ticket to exploring a popular tourist destination without the crowds, travelling the world by themes (like “Amazing Urban Gardens”), or visiting places you’d likely never see in person (“Remote Islands”). Along the way, “knowledge cards” provide factoids about the sites and scenes you see.
For the daredevils, a familiar feature has joined the lineup at Google Earth. The company’s infamous “I’m Feeling Lucky” button has migrated to maps from the search engine, and will zip you to one of 20,000 random locations around the world. You’ll be shown knowledge cards about your destination as well as recommendations for similar spots to check out.
The entire interface has been spiffed up, with imagery that’s the most realistic and enthralling yet. While nothing can take the place of actually setting foot somewhere, Google Earth is now a stunning virtual travel tool that’s pretty much guaranteed to expand your bucket list.

This story was originally published on GizmodoSaturated fat is a prime suspect in the onset of osteoarthritis after Australian scientists found it actually changed the composition of cartilage, particularly in the weight-bearing joints of the hip and knee.The research is possibly the first study to investigate the association between osteoarthritis and common dietary fatty acids.It was conducted by Professor Yin Xiao from QUT’s Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation and his team, in collaboration with Professor Lindsay Brown and his team at University of Southern Queensland.The researchers studied the effects on joints of diets rich in a variety of saturated fatty acids found in such foods as butter, coconut oil, palm oil and animal fat, and simple carbohydrates – a high-fat, high carbohydrate diet common to “junk food”.“Our findings suggest that it’s not wear and tear but diet that has a lot to do with the onset of osteoarthritis,” Professor Xiao said.The main function of cartilage is to seal the bone ends in a joint and absorb pressure on the bones during weight-bearing movement such as walking. The researchers found that a diet containing simple carbohydrates together with 20 per cent saturated fats produced osteoarthritic-like changes in the knee.“Saturated fatty acid deposits in the cartilage change its metabolism and weaken the cartilage, making it more prone to damage. This would, in turn, lead to osteoarthritic pain from the loss of the cushioning effect of cartilage,” Professor Xiao said.They also found changes in the bone under the cartilage on a diet rich in saturated fat.PhD student Sunder Sekar said the team tested lauric acid, a saturated fatty acid found in coconut oil.“Interestingly, when we replaced the meat fat in the diet with lauric acid we found decreased signs of cartilage deterioration and metabolic syndrome so it seems to have a protective effect,” Mr Sekar said.He said fatty acids could cause tissue inflammation in the entire “joint environment”.“We tested a variety of saturated fats and found that long term use of animal fat, butter, and palm oil could weaken the cartilage.“Replacement of traditional diets containing coconut-derived lauric acid with palm oil-derived palmitic acid or animal fat-derived stearic acid has the potential to worsen the development of both metabolic syndrome and osteoarthritis.”Professor Xiao’s previous research has found that antioxidants and anti-cholesterol drugs could slow the progression of joint damage caused by fatty acids.The study was supported by the Prince Charles Hospital Research Foundation.

It sounds like the plot of a dystopian novel: humanity, crushed by the weight of overpopulation or fleeing the fallout of a nuclear disaster, is forced to take up residence in unexpected places like subway tunnels and silos.
Except there’s nothing dystopian about this stylish silo home, the work of architect Christoph Kaiser.
Located in Phoenix, Arizona, the round residence is a converted corrugated steel-wall grain silo from 1955. Kaiser spotted the silo online, purchased it, disassembled it, then transported it via truck to Phoenix before creating his dream home.
Getting it there was only part of the challenge. With just 340 square feet of livable space and a cylindrical shape, the silo presented a unique set of challenges. At the top of Kaiser’s list was creating a sense of ‘home’ within a shape and size that many would consider anything but ‘home-y’.
He set out to transform traditional notions of a residential dwelling by focusing on spaciousness and simplicity. Both were achieved by accommodating all functions for living in a two-storey walnut and black steel crescent that hugs the silo’s southern perimeter. This ingenious approach maximises construction efficiency, usable floor space, and the perceived spatial volume of the interior.
The silo home also features subterranean air ducts that mitigate mechanical noise from the air conditioning system, and that work in conjunction with an operable skylight at the top of the silo to deliver passive cooling.
Social areas – the kitchen and living space – make up the ground floor. The sleeping area is found upstairs, reached by a space-efficient spiral staircase made of wood and steel. Almost everything inside – short of two Eames chairs – was custom made to accommodate the structure’s unusual shape.
Outside, sliding doors open onto a garden space and patio that wraps around the silo, mimicking its curves.
Our verdict on the silo home? What it lacks in size it more than makes up for in creativity, cosiness, and industrial charm, and if dystopia looked like this, it wouldn’t be half bad.

Their new line of kitchen appliances, named “Sicily Is My Love”, is a vibrant explosion of colour and imagery suited only to cooks with a taste for the dramatic.The capsule collection of kitchenwares is an homage to Southern Italy, which both Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana call home. The playful designs are a nod to Sicilian culture – think lemons, prickly pears, cherries, Mount Etna, and acanthus leaves, framed in triangular motifs known as crocchi. Floral themes and ornamental friezes finish off the eye-catching aesthetic.Last year’s collaboration between Dolce & Gabbana and Smeg resulted in the creation of 100 limited edition, uniquely painted refrigerators. This year’s focuses on smaller products for your kitchen, like toasters, juicers, coffee makers, kettles, blenders, and stand mixers.Look for the collection to land in October and expect costs to be commensurate with the double-whammy of haute brand names attached. Last year’s refrigerators went for over US$34,000.The jury’s out on whether these gadgets are art or an eyesore, but we can all agree they’re conversation pieces. Welcome to The Ned. Not the “Howdily Doodily” Ned of the yellow persuasion, but rather the latest addition to London’s mega hotel scene.
Set to be open in May, The Ned is set inside the former iconic headquarters of Midland Bank, a firm which has happily vacated the premises whilst leaving the original Victorian architecture intact.
The stunning project is a collaboration between Soho House and Sydell Group who have spent no less than £200 million to renovate the expansive space into a 252-room club/hotel hybrid precinct.
Once complete The Ned will house nine different restaurants including New York’s famous deli known as Cecconi’s, a 24-hour brasserie, Japanese cuisine, French and of course, British. The massive hotel’s luxe facilities will also include event spaces, a gym, a Turkish bath and spa.
Some sections of the hotel are so finely appointed with sartorial details that it makes the space look more like an exclusive gentleman’s club hailing from the 1930s. And that’s where members-only ‘Ned’s Club’ comes in.
Head downstairs and guests will be greeted with the Vault Room lounge bar which utilises the actual vault left behind as part of its glorious decor. Slip upstairs and members will be able to enjoy the rooftop space overlooking the financial district which also comes with its own pool, bar and restaurants.

BMW‘s relentless raiding of the M parts bin has finally paid off with another Bavarian beast.
Unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show this week, the latest 2018 M4 CS slots nicely in between the ‘standard’ M4 and the Nurburgring conquering M4 GTS. Why BMW decided to build another M4 variant is still unknown but honestly, who’s complaining?
The M4 CS specs reveal an increase in performance across the board to make it an even more focused driver’s car without diminishing daily drivability. In the numbers game that means 460hp (up from 450hp) developed from a 3.0-litre turbo six cylinder and a 0 – 100km/h sprint time of 3.9 seconds. Those after an old-school manual will be disappointed though with BMW only making their DCT gearbox available on the CS.
On the flip side, the handling department does get some action with new custom lightweight 19-inch alloys wrapped in super sticky Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres. The suspension meanwhile borrows from the Competition Package and receives BMW’s Adaptive M Suspension – with a more aggressive tune one might add.
The cockpit of the CS is another sight to behold as it receives lashings of beautiful Alcantara on the trimmings and steering wheel. Moving to the exterior will reveal even more aggression with carbon fibre bits adorning the front fascia, rear boot lid spoiler and diffuser.
If you were never too keen on that giant rear wing on the M4 GTS then maybe this is your time to shine.
