Not only is the Mediterranean home to some of the most serene coastlines in the world and a more simple and laid-back way of life, but it’s also responsible for giving us the Mediterranean Diet. It’s not a diet in the strictest sense of the word, and it’s not like the Keto or Carnivore diets which are designed to help you lose weight, but instead, it’s a more cultural way to improve the nutritional content of the foods you eat.
It could also hold the key to helping you live longer, according to a recent study.tt
First, a quick crash course on the Mediterranean Diet. It’s based on foods consumed in countries such as Italy and Greece back in the ’60s and comprises an array of vegetables, fish, fruit, nuts and olive oil. Because many countries make up the Med, there’s no ‘right’ path to follow, as each has their own take on it.

For many years, people believed red wine – a Mediterranean Diet staple – was a major contributor to the health benefits of the diet, as it contains a compound called resveratrol. However, scientists at the University of Minnesota Medical School have debunked this myth and found olive oil to be the main ingredient to a longer-lasting life.
Doug Mashek PhD and his team have spent the last eight years researching the health benefits of olive oil and found the fat found within it activates a pathway in our bodies’ cells “known to increase lifespan and prevent aging-related diseases,” the same pathway originally thought to have been activated by red wine.
View this post on Instagram
Speaking of the reasons for the study, Mashek adds “We didn’t start out by studying the Mediterranean diet; we first were focusing on fat,”
“This fat is known to be protective against heart disease and many other aging-related diseases, so by identifying this pathway, it provides a new way of thinking about how consuming olive oil and the Mediterranean diet is actually linked to positive health benefits.”
However, Doug insists that you can’t just go and guzzle a bottle and expect to live until you’re 100-years old, but instead combine an olive oil-rich diet with fasting, limited caloric intake, and exercise, to reap the full benefits.
Speaking of his findings, Mashek said “We found that the way this fat works is it first has to get stored in microscopic things called lipid droplets, which is how our cells store fat. And then, when the fat is broken down during exercising or fasting, for example, is when the signalling and beneficial effects are realized.”

With expose after viral expose showcasing scorned daters’ abusive (and embarrassing) responses to rejection, it’s easy to dismiss Tinder as a pit of sweet-spoken liars who turn vicious as soon as they realise you aren’t interested in their brand of pillow wrestling. In fact the ABC recently reported on the “world of harassment” women may receive when rejecting a match.
“A lot of guys take the fact they think they’re anonymous online to be more bold and say things they wouldn’t normally if they saw you in person,” a source told the ABC.
Obviously most socially-calibrated humans wouldn’t respond like this. However we don’t doubt men with bruised ego’s have a hard time coming up with an elegant response to Tinder rejection.
So to help you deal with rejection a little more graciously, we trawled the internet (and our phone galleries) for magnanimous responses to ‘defeat’ that will restore your faith in humanity. Who knows—a witty response could even get you back in the game.
Although we don’t know for sure what happened next, I’m calling an 80% chance this response was smart enough to warrant, at the very least, a, “Well played” from Ms No Image Found.
This one somehow managed to be both random and to the point. Probs didn’t get him a second chance but surely elicited a chuckle.
Optimistic: we like it.
This guy is worth a second shot for no other reason than his scrabble playing abilities.
If she’s a mechanic she might appreciate it. Otherwise this is one of the weaker comebacks. 2/10.
He probably won’t get himself back in the game with this, but at least it contains a modicum of wit rather than just straight up cringe.
This guy knows his guitars…
Some weren’t strictly speaking comebacks, but the lols speak for themselves…
And this one went so well from the start (and pushed its luck so far) we doubt it’s real.
We don’t know what this guy said, but to come back from that seems a tall order for a guy in an ill fitting polo shirt.
Anyway, if none of these options work for you, why not just invite 100’s of matches to a hunger games style Tinder date, like this brave, time-wasting soul did? Got to be worth a try, right?

I’ve owned watches for as long as I can remember. Ever since I was a kid I’ve had some form of time-teller on my wrist. I can’t remember the very first watch I got, but it was probably the basic digital Casio we’ve all owned at some point. But as soon as I entered my twenties and started earning my own money, I started to become more conscious of my appearance, clothing, and accessories.
I’ve always had a fascination with watches, and how brands manage to implement small design tweaks that make theirs instantly recognisable.
The only thing I don’t enjoy about watches is their price tag. That’s not to say they’re not worth their asking prices – I’m aware how much work goes into their production – but because I know it’ll be a cold day in hell before I can afford one.
It’s why I’ve always had to settle for watches on the much more affordable end of the budget scale, although I did have a ‘blowout’ (in my eyes anyway) when I spent £325 of my student loan on a TW Steel CEO Canteen…

Fast forward a decade and I find myself in Australia, working for a men’s lifestyle publication that places a heavy focus on watches. I’ve been exposed to new brands and new terminology, and it’s got me thinking more about watches and the ones I should be buying… Not to mention a good reason to replace my extensive Daniel Wellington collection.
I’ve always wanted to own an automatic watch. Not only because I would never have to replace the battery, but, to me anyway, I see them as a more premium offering and the pinnacle of watchmaking.
So, after learning a little bit more about the brands available in my budget, I settled on a Seiko 5 Sports – which, after doing some digging, appears to be the first automatic watch of choice for many a budding enthusiast. Specifically, I opted for the recently discontinued SNZF15J1 with a Pepsi-style bezel, which some Seiko fans call the ‘Sea Urchin’. And no, I wasn’t deliberately trying to imitate a Rolex on my wrist.
RELATED: The Rolex GMT-Master ‘Pepsi’ Alternatives We Can Approve

Not only is my Seiko 5 my first automatic, but if memory serves, it’s also my first with a bracelet. I’ve always owned watches with either leather, rubber or NATO straps, but since owning the Seiko, I’m not entirely sure why. After having a few links removed, it fits perfectly on my wrist, and it’s lightweight so I barely know it’s there. It’s also immune from contracting a smell from sweat. I’ve owned smaller watches and I’ve owned bigger (here’s looking at you again, TW Steel) but the 41mm case of the Seiko is the goldilocks of sizes for me.
A quick search on Reddit proves I’m not alone in choosing a Seiko 5 to start off my collection. Take this /r/watches user, who gushes about his Sea Urchin (essentially the same watch as mine but with a clean black dial instead of a blue dial/Pepsi bezel combination). Like him, I feel owning this Seiko will kickstart a genuine hobby.
One of the main factors that drew me to this Seiko 5 was the price. I paid £133/AU$260 for it, which means I can wear it on a daily basis and not have to worry too much if it receives the odd knock. Obviously, I want to keep it in as good condition as possible, but it’s not as if I’ve got the equivalent of a house deposit on my wrist.
I work part-time at a café/bar, making coffee, smoothies, and cocktails, so there’s always a high chance of it being subjected to splashes and stains. But a quick wipe with a damp cloth and it’s fit to fight another day.

For this kind of money, I’m also aware I’m not going to get the very finest materials – we’re not quite in the realm of haute horlogerie here – but I feel it’s a solidly built watch, considering the price, and have no criticisms to make, and I particularly like the see-through back so I can see the movement working.
Add to that a 40-hour power reserve, which means that if I do happen to leave it on my bedside table for a day or so, I don’t have to worry about it coming to a halt, and I can comfortably wear it to the swimming pool or in the sea thanks to its 100-metre water resistance. Also, I never have to worry about changing a battery – which is the main advantage of an automatic watch, after all.
The combination of owning this Seiko and working at DMARGE has definitely whetted my appetite for watches, and I’m now making it my mission to save up enough cash to spend on a higher-quality model one day. All I need to do now is come up with a shortlist, which is no easy task…
An automatic watch is a mechanical watch where the natural motion of the wearer provides energy to wind the watch. A quartz watch is an electronic watch that uses an electronic oscillator regulated by a quartz crystal to keep time, and is powered by a battery. It depends. Quartz watches tend to be cheaper and more accurate than automatic watches but require you to change the battery periodically. Automatic watches are usually more expensive, but they don't require batteries. Watch collectors tend to prefer automatic watches over quartz watches. All Rolex watches currently in production are automatic watches. Most luxury watch brands don't make (many) quartz watches. A hard question! Affordable watch brands that make automatic watches include Citizen, Hamilton, Orient, Seiko, Timex and Tissot. What's the difference between an automatic watch and a quartz watch?

Oven-fresh croissants tickle your nostrils. Your amant pours coffee from a French Press. You stretch, light a cigarette, and toss your feet out from under the covers. You flânes around the apartment like an indecisive diplomat before taking breakfast on the balcony. Orange juice, espresso and five-star views.
… And then you wake up in your two-star accommodation (which cost about the same as a four-star hotel anywhere else). It was all a dream and a cruel one at that. But why the heck is Paris so expensive, even for those of us that can usually afford decent digs anyplace else?

Well, as we reported last year, not only is space a premium in Paris, but locals have a different lifestyle which – if you don’t adapt to it – can ruin your brief Paris experience. So other than drinking enough Gran Marnier that you wouldn’t be able to tell a budget backpackers’ from a five-star hotel by the time your stumble back to your room, what can you do?
In the past, we’d have said suck it up. But a recent piece by The New York Times suggests there is another way. The article, which reads, “How To Have A Five-Star Experience Without Booking A Room” gives tight-fisted travellers five ways to get the five-star Paris experience… all while staying in a hostel, cheap hotel or Airbnb.
How? By walking into five-star establishments off the street, to have a one-off luxury experience on the cheap (ish). Keen? Here are the best places to do it, courtesy of the world’s most prolific Pulitzer Prize publication.
Dinner – V Restaurant at Hotel Vernet
Hotel Vernet, 25 Rue Vernet, 75008 Paris, France
Like leather banquettes? How about romantic stained-glass domes? Or architecture designed by Gustave Eiffel? This “pinch-me-I’m-in-Paris moment” is numero uno among the NYT’s Paris recommendations, and has all three attributes.
The down-low? Read on: “With only 35 seats, V Restaurant is a paean to the talents of the chef Richard Robe, a master of French gastronomy who coaxes intense flavour from seasonal products and delights in reimagining historic dishes for contemporary diners.”
“This winter, à la carte highlights include the V pie — a puff pastry filled with a savory mélange of duck, foie gras and porcini mushrooms — and a modern take on an 18th-century recipe, Lievre à la Royale: slow-braised rabbit stuffed with foie gras and a roulade of Parmesan-crusted cannelloni pasta brimming with stewed meat and crushed juniper berries.”
“The seven-course tasting menu (€95, or around $105),” The New York Times continues, “deftly balances richness with lighter, acidic dishes: think crayfish carpaccio with avocado and passion fruit purée, risotto laced with chanterelle mushrooms and chorizo, and “Le Chocolat” puffed pastry for dessert.”
TLDR? Foodie heaven.
Cocktails: the Duc de Morny Library at La Réserve Paris
La Réserve, 42 Avenue Gabriel, 75008 Paris, France
Tucked into Avenue Gabriel, this mansion-turned-hotel brings “Belle Époque glamour” and intimate “feel-like-home ambience” together.
For those after “Belle Epoque glamour” there’s the bar; for those that seek “feel-like-home ambience” there’s the library.
NYT recommended cocktails include the Femme Fatale — Champagne mixed with lime, cucumber and elderflower liqueur, or the Bain de Folie, a sweet blend of raspberries, lime, Hendrick’s gin, Chambord, egg white and fresh mint.
Cooking class: the Ritz Paris
Hôtel Ritz Paris, 15 Place Vendôme, 75001 Paris, France

Forget torturing yourself at L’Ami Louis. Instead, if you’re a foodie, The New York Times says you should take a half-day course at the prestigious Ritz Escoffier cooking school (inside the Ritz Paris hotel) and then consume your creations ensemble with the chef and newfound friends.
The menu includes dishes like roasted duckling filet with quince and creamy polenta, warm molten chocolate cake with orange custard and roasted mango or hazelnut crumble with yogurt sorbet. There are also classes focusing on Madeleines, modern tarts, macarons and all things chocolate.
Oh and, just casually, the Ritz’s François Perret was recently named best pastry chef in the world (“before or after class, grab one of his whimsical creations at Bar Vendôme”).
Art: Le Royal Monceau
Le Royal Monceau, 37 Avenue Hoche, 75008 Paris, France
Le Royal Monceau is a five-star hotel with an in-house art concierge, a 99-seat cinema and avant-garde artworks installed throughout. As The New York Times tells, “On Sunday evenings, nonhotel guests can attend a private screening at Katara Cinema (€40 per person), which includes a glass of Champagne and a cone of caramelized popcorn by the hotel’s acclaimed pastry chef, Pierre Hermé.”
“Or pop outside to the holiday-themed Winter Terrace for a Veuve Clicquot tasting experience in an alpine-feeling chalet.”

The singer has learned the pitfalls of too-much fame and the barrelling judgment that rides with it. But he’s managed to stay above the waterline; moving on from childish and cocky to confident in what he believes – and wears. The teeny-boppin’ Canadian has certainly moved on from side-fringes and baggy jeans to the grown-up stuff like Balmain jackets and tattoos; such much so he scored prime position in Calvin Klein’s underwear campaigns.
Breaking It Down
Young, cool and super cashed-up, Bieber has cruised along this past year. Far from being a one-look wonder, Bieber romps around music awards, LA parties and fashion week like a natural, rubbing shoulders with the Kanye’s of the celebrity fashion world; gathering more attention for his clothes than the taste-makers themselves.Off-duty, the pop star is just as luxe – walking around in fash-ed up loungewear or casual jackets, underpinned by leather-look jeans and $1,200 sneakers. Statement headgear is a Bieber thing too; snapping back a reversed cap or felt fedora depending on his ‘scene’.
Street
In keeping with his hybrid style, Bieber looks the ‘street biker’ in a statement leather jacket and urban bottoms For his birthday in Los Angeles, Bieber went monochrome with a motocross jacket in stark white – the black epaulettes and forearm ribbed padding offering a safeguard against the night’s proceedings perhaps. At Kanye West’s fashion show, Bieber was seeing red with a sharper leather biker cut like a dinner jacket with asymmetric zip and metallic hardware. Both looks bounced along in a longline plain tee and relaxed-fit black denim; the latter with tapered ankles cinched in nicely to expose the statement kicks. Yeezy!
Luxury Hipster
Justin – like most twenty-somethings – has many a casual look. And on-trend, hipstery things feature loads of white-on-black-on-white, longline tees and cotton check over-shirts – for the very best in urban and rock styles. But Bieber works his own luxury accent with expensive jewellery, molten black denim (going anti-hipster with the cuff unrolled) and slip on sneakers in a mix of ponyskin prints – leopard or cheetah – ignoring the hipster uniform of Nike Roshe runs, barbershop hair and bushy beard. Can he even grow one?
Active Futurism
Bieber likes activewear, obviously. But his taste for easy-go clothing doesn’t forgo his salivating over luxury kit, which sees him experiment with technical fabrics for a future-forward approach to fashion.Unusual proportions are another way Bieber dresses futuristically. A super longline t-shirt and army hi-top sneakers offer an urban look when paired under a sharp dinner jacket in army green – again sleeves rolled. The olive hue continues onto the relaxed denim with ribbed signatures acting as a galactic accent on the knees, again reverting to future times.Monochrome black casual wear becomes forward-thinking with baggy-ish track pants in leather and bold zips with a basic tee getting a satin collar rewiring at the neck; the outfit turned contemporary with luxury white sneakers.

It’s a hard life being a celebrity. You’re in the public eye 24/7, with every move you make being commented on, with both positive and negative reactions. The clothes they choose to wear provide consistent debatable conversation, especially on photo-sharing social platforms such as Instagram.
Drake is the latest celeb to come under the style microscope, with the rather ‘basic’ outfit he chose to wear whilst commentating courtside at a Toronto Raptors vs Phoenix Suns NBA game on February 22nd, 2020, receiving its fair share of criticism. Champagne Papi was seen wearing a Chrome Hearts light wash denim jacket with silk and lamb leather lining – yours for US$7,250 – paired with black jeans and a pair of white Nike Air Force 1s – US$90.
Chrome Hearts is a Los Angeles-based label founded in 1988 by Richard Stark that produces high-end silver jewellery, along with clothing, furniture, incense, and sunglasses. The brand has collaborated with various other designers and models, such as Commes des Garçons and Bella Hadid, for limited edition collections. You can’t buy pieces direct from the company’s website, but there are a number of stores in America, Europe, and Asia.
To us, it’s a perfectly executed outfit. with the double denim look being spot on thanks to the two contrasting shades. Drake has clearly also read our how to wear white sneakers with black jeans style guide. However, Instagram has been quick to call him out and criticise his choices.
“Drakes makes everything look uncool”, says one user, while others add that he’s a “tool” and a “try-hard, with zero style”. Many users consider his Nike sneakers are too big as well, with comments ranging from “he makes those forces look corny af”, to “nothing worse than too big forces.”
“That was so basic.”
Simon97l goes further, calling out Drake’s style choices within the hip-hop industry, “I don’t like his hair cut [and] I don’t like the way he dresses… their [sic] is something about his personality that is not hip hop. There is no spark as you look at Jay Z, Nas the Jadakiss his attitude is too R&B.”
There’s clearly no pleasing some people.
However, it’s not all bad news for the One Dance singer, as one user is quick to jump to his defence, claiming Drizzy’s outfit to be “the best I’ve seen him wear”.
And we’d agree, it’s an outfit we’d be perfectly happy wearing (if not every day). So we’re firmly #TeamDrake on this one. But yes: we’ll admit it is slowly becoming the ensemble of choice for your home-brand f*ckboi or wannabe lothario.
You have been warned.

Gone are the days when only women, pretty boys and athletes did away with unwanted fuzz. Now, hair removal for men is a booming business – back, chest, shoulders, even feet (Frodo-alert), all the while fighting to keep as much hair as we can up top. And, cause not every system of hair removal for men is the ‘one’, making sense of the hairiness can be too much for some. From permanent to temporary, expensive to pretty cheap, here’s how to navigate the scary world of hair removal for men, leaving you with smooth, baby-ed skin that you’ll be a little happy camper in.
Laser Hair Removal For Men
Despite the Star Wars name, laser is a fast and gentle way to remove unwanted hair with relatively permanent results.“Lasers are safe enough to be used on any part of the body and target different skin types whilst ensuring maximum results,” explains Louise Grammer from Laser Clinics Australia. The laser uses a specific wavelength of light to target hair melanin, which is the compound that causes hair colour. “It works when a concentrated light hits the hair follicle,” adds Grammer. “This inhibits the hair’s ability to grow without disrupting or damaging the skin’s surface.”Best for: large body areas such as the chest and stomach or the back and shoulders. “But underarms and legs are also proving popular,” says Grammer.Pros: laser is permanent hair removal and considered less painful than electrolysis. “Our lasers feature a unique dynamic cooling device that helps to calm, soothe and protect the skin.”Cons: Blond, grey or white and some types of red hair do not respond to treatment. “Laser hair removal cannot treat these colours as they do not produce enough pigment. Therefore, the laser will not be able to be attracted to this colour and will essentially miss them.”What it takes: gents can see results after 5 to 8 treatments. “Our lasers use a wide beam which allows the removal of multiple hair follicles at the same time,” says Grammer. “Some clients will require maintenance sessions to keep the hair growth minimal after their initial sessions.”Cost: a full-body treatment is priced at around $399, while an area like the back and shoulders is $199.RELATED: Best Beard Styles For Men
Electrolysis For Men
A form of laser, electrolysis destroys the growth centre of the hair with chemical or heat energy. After a very fine probe is inserted into the hair follicle, the hair is then removed with tweezers.Best for: large areas as well as smaller, problem areas from men like ears, eyebrows and feet.Pros: it suits all hair and skin types because it doesn’t target hair pigment (like laser treatment), but the follicle itself. It’s the most effective as a permanent hair removal solution for men.Cons: multiple treatments are needed, making it extremely time consuming and expensive. Skin is known to get discoloured if not done to a high standard, so shop around before picking a therapist. What it takes: the total number of sessions for permanent hair removal varies from person to person based on hair colour and thickness and the size of the area being treated. Treatments usually take place weekly until no longer needed, but it’s usually 10-plus. Each lasts anywhere between 15 and 60 minutes. What it costs: approximately $95 for 30 minutes.
Waxing For Men
Ouch! Yes, the sticky, messy flesh-ripper has made many a man cry. While it still hurts, today’s waxing methods are far more upmarket and civilised, especially when you seek professional help.Best for: small areas on the body and face such as eyebrows (both monobrows and shaping), hair on ears and neck, legs, underarms, and arms.Pros: it suits all hair types and colours, and is a good precursor for men considering permanent hair removal via laser or electrolysis. Wax your hair off first to see if you like the look, before you hit laser.Cons: The pain, oh, the pain. Especially for sensitive areas like the groin. The thicker or coarser the hair the more painful, and some men are prone to redness or bleeding.“Expect your skin to be sensitive and a little red,” say the crew at Essential Beauty. “The skin should look evenly red and spotty where the waxing has occurred.”Waxing isn’t permanent. So, it’s an ongoing love affair (with the pain!) you’re getting yourself in to.What it takes: the day before, gently exfoliate skin with a scrub to remove any dead skin cells (and reduces the likeliness of ingrown hairs later on). On the day, keep the skin free of creams and lotions. In just one session you will have the hair removed.“For men, it’s especially important to use an exfoliant and loofah mitt to prevent ingrown hairs between waxes,” says Essential Beauty crew.“You will have soft smooth hair free skin for up to two weeks. After this, the returning hairs will be softer and lighter. You can easily have another wax after 3 weeks, though some clients like to wait 4 weeks.”What it costs: depends on the waxing area and how luxurious the salon. Eyebrows approx. $20 while chest and stomach costs $50.
Hair Removal Creams For Men
Bit of a skirt when it comes to pain? Hair removal creams are a wax-free way to remove hair from the body.Best for: small areas such as the armpits, hands or feet and lower stomach, where waxing hurts. Also, good for hard to reach areas such as the tops of the shoulders andPros: it’s relatively inexpensive and most creams can be bought from your local chemist or supermarket. And it’s quick and very DIY for a home-job. Plus, cream hair removal products do not affect hair thickness at all, meaning hair stays the same density. And, according to Veet, hair removal creams acts closer to the root, “with results that last up to twice as long as shaving.”Cons: apply the cream, carefully! Once it’s on any area with hair, that hair is coming off, even if you try washing or wiping it away. It’s a cream with chemicals in it too, so do a skin sensitivity test before applying to a large part of your body. Finally, don’t apply over scars, moles, broken and sunburnt skin to avoid irritation. What it takes: Exfoliate the skin area 24 hours before, and apply the cream. Just leave the cream on the area for 3-6 minutes, and presto, you’re a baby again. Like waxing, wear breathable clothing for several hours afterwards and avoid getting too hot and sweaty.
Shaving For Men
The oldest trick it the book, shaving is man’s best friend when it comes to grooming and is a proven and trusted hair remover for men.Best for: easy to reach places where the hand can stay steady (shaving nicks aren’t nice, especially down ‘there’).Pros: it’s one of the easiest ways to get rid of unwanted. And it’s cheap. Do it in the shower, which softens the skin and you’re also getting a clean.Cons: shaving cuts hair off at the skin, not the root. Impatience will only lead to bloodshed, so shave slowly, especially over larger areas like the legs and shins. What it takes: again, exfoliate the day before to avoid ingrown hairs. Trim back longer hairs to minimise hair pulling. Then, select a quality razor and apply a liberal amount fo shaving cream to ensure a clean glide. Post-shave, use a soothing balm. Not into baby-faced skin? An electric shaver is your best bet, leaving you with a natural stubble look, which some guys prefer.
Removing Body Hair FAQ
Apply a post-depilatory lotion to remove any waxy residue. This will also sooth your skin and avoid red bumps and ingrown hairs. You may also apply a cold compress to reduce inflammation. Hair removal creams have long-lasting results, but shaving is more convenient. If you have sensitive skin, shaving is also the better method of hair removal for you. Laser hair removal works on any body part, but it is especially effective on four areas – the bikini, the lip, the chin and the underarm areas. How do I take care of my skin after waxing?
