6 Rookie Mistakes New Investors Make & How To Easily Avoid Them
6 Rookie Mistakes New Investors Make & How To Easily Avoid Them

Investing in the stock market can be exhilarating or terrifying. You can make money or you can lose money. The difference between these two outcomes depends on whether or not you can avoid the most common pitfalls that so often destroy new investors.

Today we’re going to break down the easiest things to avoid while investing so that you don’t fall into any of the easily avoidable traps that snare most new investors. Now, what most don’t realize is that investing isn’t about being 100% correct about every trade — half the game is simply about avoiding obvious mistakes.

#1: FOMO Buying

Without a doubt, the number one way that new & experienced investors alike lose money is by getting caught up in market hype.

We’ve all been there: you’re watching a chart rip upwards, you’re seeing everyone else jump into it and then you finally decide to YOLO a few hundred bucks in because you don’t want to miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime trade.

There’s an old Wall Street adage that goes something like this: “When your cab driver tells you to check out a stock, that’s the time to sell it.”

If a certain stock is already going wild and doing laps on social media just accept that you’ve already missed out. Take a deep breath and remember that investing is all about controlling your emotions and finding stocks before they take off.

#2: Not Knowing What You’re Investing In

“Everybody, when they buy a stock, should be able to take a yellow pad and write down exactly why they plan to invest in that particular company.”

Warren Buffett

Everyone’s favourite investing legend Warren Buffett is well-known for his aversion to investing in things that he doesn’t understand, most notably tech stocks and crypto…

Although this rule saw Buffett miss out on Microsoft and a couple of other 100X tech stocks when they were just starting out, it also meant he avoided countless companies that went bankrupt.

It’s very simple: if you can’t explain why you’re investing in a company to a stranger on the street, it’s probably time to revisit the ol’ thesis.

#3: Getting Stock “Tips”

Just because you get a recommendation doesn’t mean you have to take it. Everyone loves to hand out advice, especially in finance. While there’s nothing wrong with talking to your friends about what you want to invest in, buying because your mate said so is never a good idea.

Unless your mate has a proven track record of spectacular gains or he works on the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange, it’s probably a safe bet to take any tips with a grain of salt… At the very least, do you own research and figure out whether or not it fits in with the rest of your portfolio.

#4: Not Taking The Right Risks

This might not seem like the most conventional advice for in a “things to avoid piece”, but it’s something that needs to be said, especially to younger investors.

While playing it safe and having the bulk of your portfolio in a stable ETF or index fund that tracks the S&P 500, it’s important to remember that a small, measured portion of your portfolio can and perhaps should be dedicated to high-risk, high-reward investing.

Most often, amateur investors take on risk in a haphazard manner and end up getting majorly burned because they dumped half their portfolio into a random penny stock.

Experienced investors allocate small segments of their portfolio to the riskier end of their thesis, because if it pays off… It pays off big time. And if it doesn’t – they’ve planned for this outcome and they can handle that loss.

TL;DR: be measured and thoughtful with risk-taking. If you’re young you can only afford to allocate no more than 10% of your total position towards risky plays (if you’re in a stable financial position and are capable of absorbing some losses).

“Aerotyne International is a cutting-edge tech firm out of the Midwest, awaiting imminent patent approval on a new generation of radar equipment…” Image: Paramount

#5: Ignoring Fees

This one might seem pretty obvious but tiny differences in fees can cripple your gains in the long run. This goes for brokerage fees on share trading platforms as well as management fees in managed funds.

If you pay 1% per year in management fees on a $50,000 investment that earns 7% per year over a 30-year term that’s nearly $100,000 in fees. If the fee drops just 0.5%, you pay closer to $50,000 in fees.

If you want to read up on which share trading platforms have the lowest fees and find the best broker for you, flick through DMARGE’s comprehensive review of the best share trading platforms here

#6: Falling In Love With A Stock

“Never fall in love with a stock.”

Peter Lynch

A common disease that strikes almost all rookie investors is holding onto a stock that has been crashing for months simply because it surged in value when they first bought it. That first spike of dopamine when the price went up keeps them hoping that it will one day return to its previous price without ever bothering to check its fundamentals or looking at what others in the market are saying.

Always be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the companies you’re investing in so that you can decide when to sell.

David Beckham Spotted Wearing Tudor’s ‘Perfect Travel Watch’ On Holiday
David Beckham Spotted Wearing Tudor’s ‘Perfect Travel Watch’ On Holiday

David Beckham‘s got a bit of an obsession with Italy – but we’re obsessed with the watch he rocked during his most recently Mediterranean holiday.

The legendary ex-football player, international style icon (and the father everyone wishes they had) recently treated his youngest, 10-year-old Harper, to a daddy-and-daughter holiday to Venice, where they defied mum Victoria’s rules and ate a whole bunch of gelato. Love it.

The man loves Italy. He’s previously taken his sons Brooklyn, Cruz and Romeo on a boy’s trip to Puglia, and even penned a partnership with iconic Italian carmaker Maserati. Anyway…

Becks also chose to wear a highly appropriate timepiece for his trip with Harper: the Tudor Black Bay Pro, the highlight release from Watches & Wonders 2022 (in my humble opinion) and arguably the best travel watch the cult Swiss brand has ever produced.

Images: @davidbeckham / Tudor

A 39mm GMT watch and a new model within Tudor’s popular Black Bay range, the Black Pay Pro is in many ways a revival of the original Rolex Explorer II (ref. 1655), which was produced from 1971 to 1985. It combines design codes from the ref. 1655 with Tudor aesthetic: namely the use of ‘snowflake’ hands for the hour, seconds and GMT hands.

A GMT watch is a watch that can tell the time in two different time zones, which is the perfect complication for a jet-setter like Beckham, who splits his time between his native Britain and Miami. It’s great if you want to take a cheeky Italian holiday, too.

RELATED: Nic Von Rupp’s Tudor Watch Is Tested By The World’s Biggest Waves

The Tudor Black Bay Pro is also twice as water-resistant as even a modern Explorer II, boasts a 70-hour power reserve and is available on one of three straps: a hybrid rubber/textile strap, a NATO-style jacquard fabric strap and a faux-riveted steel bracelet, which is what Beckham has opted for.

Check out the rest of David Beckham’s watch collection below.

‘I Didn’t Want To Turn 30. Now I Know Why.’
‘I Didn’t Want To Turn 30. Now I Know Why.’

I just hit a milestone birthday and it’s already given me food for thought and started to provide a new perspective on life. But, just because I’m not necessarily on par with my peers, does that mean I have to worry?

With every milestone birthday comes a new way of thinking. That’s the theory, anyway. When you turn 18 you officially become an adult – or at least, it’s now legal to do things that you’ve probably already been doing for the past few years.

At 21 you become eligible to earn the full minimum wage and can be exposed to new job prospects or gain entry into certain venues that have an age cap. But then you’re left to learn life’s lessons throughout the rest of your 20s until you hit the big 3-0.

The latter just happened for me and it’s been a little overwhelming in more ways than one. Firstly, in the build-up to my birthday, numerous friends would ask me “What are you doing for your birthday? You’re turning 30, you’ve got to do something.”

This alone gave me slight anxiety. I’ve never been someone who goes all out to celebrate their birthday and very few of the previous 29 years’ celebrations actually stand out to me as being ones to remember. I’m happy to just go for a drink and some dinner, it doesn’t need to be anything over the top. So the very fact people had expectations of me was enough to make me think “I don’t want to turn 30 just yet, can I have one more year?”

After this, my mind was flooded with other thoughts and reasons as to why I didn’t want to turn 30. Essentially, I haven’t followed the timeline society places upon us. I’m (very) single, I don’t have my own house, I don’t have any savings and I haven’t seen too much of the world (I may have seen more than most, but I’m hardly what you would call ‘well-travelled’).

RELATED: Bali’s ‘Other Side’ Instagram Doesn’t Want You To See

But is this exactly a cause for concern?

It’s not just me that has had these thoughts. As Colin Zhang says in an article published on Medium, “I was supposed to have my own home by now. I was supposed to travel half the world by now. I’m not where I’m supposed to be.”

It’s at least good to know I’m not alone.

Image: @_itsokaynottobeokay_

Since turning 30, I do feel like I’ve become more aware of what I want and who I am in life. While the thought of spending three decades on this planet did spur these thoughts on, I wouldn’t say they were forced. I feel like I’ve naturally adopted a much more “I don’t give a f**k” attitude.

And, if this is the only thing I can take from turning 30, I’ll be one happy chappy. For a few years now, the thought of being single, not having any real savings, and not having a house has definitely gotten to me on numerous occasions. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had the thought “what am I doing with my life?”

RELATED: Struggle To Talk Openly With Your Mates? This Is The Solution

But now I genuinely don’t care as much (I’m not just trying to convince myself). Sure, I’m the first to admit life would be great (or at least, more comfortable) if I had just one of those things, but I’ve accepted that this is my current situation and I’ve learned to be content with that. I’m just grateful to be healthy, to be able to live in an incredibly beautiful part of the world, to have a secure job (that could all be dependent on the number of views this article gets) and to have family and friends that appreciate me.

Since going to therapy within the past 18 months, I now know that just having inner confidence and fewer worries are the only true recipe for happiness.

It’s not just myself or even Colin that have had these worrying thoughts when turning 30. Blake Worrall-Thompson, a lifestyle and mindset coach for men, has also had similar worries. I spoke to Blake to ask him about his experiences and how he managed to navigate them.

Blake is 38 now but has spent the last 15 years working on himself and helping other men to work on themselves, too. He admits when he was younger, he gravitated more towards women as he felt he could have more meaningful and deeper conversations, compared to those he’d have with his male friends.

It was this, among other factors, that allowed him to realise that this was who he was as a person. While other people may go off on a quest to become what society deems as “perfect,” Blake just wanted to feel complete and sure of himself. He now makes it his job to help other men realise the benefits of being open and dealing with any past trauma.

RELATED: I Paid $6,000 To Share Feelings With 20 Strangers In Byron Bay. It Was Totally Worth It.

Blake calls this the hedonic treadmill. “Most of society is on it and very few people will get off,” he explains.

“It’s essentially where you reach for a goal (a bigger paycheck, a job promotion, a new house, a car or a hotter partner) only you find once you get there, that you’re a little disappointed and underwhelmed by how you feel.”

“So you’ll find yourself thinking ‘well that didn’t quite hit the sweet spot, so I must need an even bigger pay rise, another job promotion, a faster/better car,’ and you start the chase of the ‘elusive carrot’ again.”

He expands upon the topic of the timeline society says we should follow, and how it’s not necessarily the right path for every single one of us to take: “Find YOUR truth, not the status quo… You go to school, get good grades, get a job, find a partner, buy a white picket fence with 2.5 kids and a dog, retire when you’re 65, die when you’re 75.”

“If that’s YOUR truth then go for it. Just be mindful, when you really sit in stillness and silence with yourself and by yourself, that you may find out this isn’t for you and that you’ve just bought into the ‘norm’ without really asking yourself, ‘what do YOU want?'”

Me, opening a beer at Angourie pools. Wouldn’t have been able to do this unless I took a risk and came to Australia. Image: Max Langridge/DMARGE

This point certainly spoke to me. I definitely haven’t followed society’s ideal timeline, but am I unhappy about that? No. Instead of settling down with someone, buying a house etc, I’ve instead moved to Australia, made an incredible group of friends, experienced new ways of living and had some eye-opening conversations with people. I know full well I would have missed out on all these experiences and more, had I ‘bought into the system’, as Blake puts it.

Blake hits home that we should all be mindful of pressure. “Whether it’s self-inflicted or society inflicted, the majority have bought into the same narrative and may make judgements or ask questions of the path you are taking, ‘Oh, so you’re not going to university?’; ‘Oh, so you haven’t bought a house yet?’; ‘Oh, so you don’t have a partner?’…”

“If you don’t know what is really true for you, you may find that you beat yourself up for not following the common path and ‘conform’ because you think you should. Work out who you are and stay true to that.”

So, to answer the question put forward in the headline. I should just keep doing whatever the f**k I want. Yes, I think I’m allowed to worry but ultimately, I don’t. I’m going to continue learning to accept all the facets that make me, me and once I’m 100% happy and sure of myself, I can then start tackling other goals.

These Nike Sneakers Are The Most Likely To Be Fake
These Nike Sneakers Are The Most Likely To Be Fake

Fake sneakers are big business. New sneakers from top brands like Adidas and Nike are already pretty expensive, but when you factor in low supply, high demand and the insane mark-ups popular models receive on the aftermarket, the demand for cheaper counterfeit creps is easy to understand.

According to some sources, the fake sneaker market is worth as much as US$450 billion, and sneakers are by far the most counterfeited good on the planet. Fakes these days are increasingly sophisticated, and it can be exceptionally difficult to sort fu-fu from the real McCoy.

It’s also hard to tell which new sneaker releases are more likely to be counterfeited than others. It’s even come to a point where the counterfeiters are so good that they can reverse-engineer sneakers from press material and get fakes out into circulation before the official release hits stores.

Well, now we’ve got some hard data. Leading sneaker and luxury goods marketplace StockX recently released a report into their authentication process and the fake goods market, revealing some shocking stats about how many fake goods they intercept, as well as the top 3 most faked sneakers they’ve encountered – and they’ve all got a few things in common.

The data

Over the last 12 months, the top 3 most faked sneakers StockX have intercepted were all Nike Air Jordans. More than that, they’re all Air Jordan 1s, and they all have a connection to popular Houston rapper Travis Scott.

Images & Data: StockX

#3 and #2 are the Jordan 1 Fragment x Travis Scott, in low and high-top form respectively. That’s not a huge surprise: all of Scott’s signature Nike sneakers rank as some of the most hyped and desired sneakers on the market. Fragment, too, is an insanely popular brand, and any of their collabs – whether that’s watches, cars or sneakers – are highly coveted.

Slightly more surprising is the most faked sneaker: the Jordan 1 High ‘Dark Mocha’. While not explicitly a Travis Scott collab, it closely resembles the insanely popular Travis Scott ‘Mocha’, which is why the style is so popular (and hence why it’s clearly been such a huge target for counterfeiters).

RELATED: Chinese Sneaker Brands Increasingly Leaving Western Competitors Red-Faced

StockX’s 11 authentication centres around the world reportedly rejected over 300,000 products worth over US$100 million last year – but not all of those products rejected were fakes. The most common reason products were rejected by StockX was manufacturing defects, which represented 24% of all rejections. The next two biggest reasons were damaged boxes at 20% and used product (i.e. it’s not mint condition) at 16%.

Fakes represented 14% of rejections, for comparison – which still works out to a whopping 42,000 products, the majority of which were sneakers. Oh, and before you ask, StockX’s authenticators boast a 99.96% accuracy rate.

A real versus a fake Adidas Yeezy Boost 350 V2 ‘Beluga’ (real on the left, fake on the right). The giveaway? The ‘SPLY’ text on the right is a bit off. Not all fakes are easy to spot like this one, though… Image: Solecheck Leo

How can I spot a fake?

While big marketplaces like StockX have huge authentication teams which inspect every sneaker they receive, how can the average shopper figure out what’s real or what’s fake? Well, it’s not always that easy – which is why sneaker authentication services or ‘legit checks’ are so in-demand right now.

Some of it comes down to common sense. If you find a sneaker that regularly sells for way above retail price for a price that’s too good to be true, it probably is. Use your senses: if they have a very chemical smell, if they feel poorly constructed or if the box/product looks off, stay away.

RELATED: ‘Abused’ $900 Sneakers The Next Normal For Australian Luxury Consumers

Also make sure it’s a colourway or design that was actually produced by the brand and not some homage (for example, Supreme have never collaborated with Yeezy, so if you see a ‘Supreme Yeezy’, it’s fake).

Just like pieces of art, specific sneakers will also have specific features that can be used to discern a fake. For instance, Legit Grails advises that the ‘Air Jordan’ applique logo on the Jordan 1 ‘Dark Mochas’ is a good way to see if a pair is fake or not: fakes tend to have different, less precise letters with inconsistent sizes and shapes.

Hot tip: join a sneaker community online. Most sneakerheads will be happy to help ‘legit check’ your sneakers, as well as provide or endorse trusted sellers (or help steer you clear of dodgy ones). Oh, and probably don’t shop on Taobao. That should be an obvious one…

Incredible 1980s Photos Show Ibiza As You’ve Never Seen It
Incredible 1980s Photos Show Ibiza As You’ve Never Seen It

Ibiza is known as a party destination. And photos of Ibiza in the 1980s prove that it was more or less the same back then.

Many things spring to mind when thinking about Ibiza.

The fact that it’s a Spanish island in the Mediterranean Sea. The Mike Posner lyrics, “I took a pill in Ibiza, to show Avicii I was cool.” And, of course, the image of a rich nightlife rife with partying and debauchery.

Currently, Ibiza is extremely well known for its legendary nightclubs and boat parties. It’s kind of assumed that if you’re travelling to Ibiza, you’re most likely going to have the time of your life and will just non-stop party.

But have you ever wondered what Ibiza was like in times gone by?

80s fashion is iconic. Image Credit: NSS

It’s hard to imagine Boomers – who are notoriously conservative and are now in their early 60s to mid-70s – going to Ibiza in the 1980s and partying like we do now.

These partiers definitely did their Buns Of Steel VHS workout. Image Credit: NSS

And yet, images of Ibiza in the 80s prove that the golden oldies partied just as hard as us youngin’s – maybe even harder.

Living his best life. Image Credit: NSS

Topless women and incredible fashion galore – think fishnet tops, leopard print, extremely high-cut bikinis and voluminous hair.

It’s time to bring studded wrist cuffs back into fashion. Image Credit: NSS

Sure, some things about Ibiza have changed since the 80s; electronic music has replaced disco, vapes replaced cigarettes and we no longer ruin our hair with perms.

But the hedonistic culture lives on; that aspect of Ibiza hasn’t changed at all over the last thirty-plus years.

Australian Men Need To Take Better Care Of Themselves, According To Women Everywhere
Australian Men Need To Take Better Care Of Themselves, According To Women Everywhere

As Men’s Health Week 2022 wraps up, we explore why men need to pull up their socks and take better care of themselves.

According to Dr Lucas de Toca, from the Australian Government’s Department of Health, men are not very good at seeking medical care. And I couldn’t agree more.

As an overly cautious person when it comes to health, I will happily go to my GP about even the most minor of issues. But my partner, on the other hand, rarely goes to see doctors – he literally shattered his knee cap and waited six days before seeing a doctor, which he only did because his mother insisted. Opposites attract, right?

In a Department of Health mini-series for Men’s Health Week, Dr de Toca outlined the multiple health issues men face; one of which is that accidental injuries and injuries resulting from risky behaviour are more prevalent in men.

Now, I regularly make the joke ‘this is why women live longer than men’ to my partner when he tells me something dumb he’s done – he once stood on multiple chairs precariously stacked on each other rather than getting a ladder, for instance.

But moving forward, I won’t be making that joke and will be encouraging my man to take fewer risks because as Dr de Toca revealed, accidental and ‘risky’ injuries are actually “a significant cause of disease and death among men”. Ooft.

Another major issue men face is mental health, which Dr de Toca highlighted with a tragic statistic.

“Unfortunately, men are three times more likely to die of suicide than women are. And sadly, this week alone, 45 men will die from suicide.”

Dr Luca de Toca
Stop putting it off and just go to the doctor. Image Credit: One Medical

To be selfish for a moment, I would be absolutely devastated and heartbroken if my partner took his life, as would his family and friends.

So, to those men out there who think it’s ‘not masculine’ to seek help for mental health issues – our 2022 DMARGE Men’s Matters Study found that 33% of men think that talking about personal issues is weak and men should figure out their problems without any help – I say, take a moment and think about your loved ones.

How saddened they’d be if you were driven to suicide because you never sought help for mental health issues – whether it be depression, anxiety, burnout or something else entirely.

Overall, – and I apologise, I’m about to get a bit sappy – I can’t bear the thought of my partner getting ill or, God forbid, dying. So, on behalf of all girlfriends, wives, mothers, daughters and sisters, I have to say: men, please take better care of yourselves.

Go to the GP if you’re sick or injured, make sure you get regular checkups (especially cardiac health checks – coronary heart disease is the leading cause of mortality among males) and seek help from a professional if you’re suffering from mental health issues; even minor ones.

And this isn’t just my advice. As Dr de Toca says,

“Men generally tend to seek medical help less than women and wait longer to get a checkup. So, a big recommendation for all of us men, young men, and boys, is to make sure that you engage with a health service; that you have a regular GP…”

Dr Luca de Toca

Seriously men, take this as a sign to book an appointment for that issue you’ve been putting off…

Lock Up Your Wives, Pete Davidson Is In Australia
Lock Up Your Wives, Pete Davidson Is In Australia

In news that may cause Australian men to head to their local Bunnings to buy supplies to barricade them and their partner inside their homes, Pete Davidson has touched down in Australia.

Yep, Pete Davidson, who has made global headlines recently due to his relationship with Kim Kardashian, has arrived in Australia to film the upcoming comedy movie, Wizards.

Residents of New South Wales and Victoria needn’t worry for now, however, as the couple were recently spotted in Cairns, Queensland, where he is expected to spend the next few months filming. While it had been reported that his better half, Kim Kardashian, had joined Pete in Australia, the news transpired to be fake.

Pete is in Australia, but Kim, unfortunately, is still in Los Angeles.

Image: @kimkardashian

Previous reports suggested the couple were staying on Bedarra Island, but according to ABC, the island “would not confirm whether or not the high-profile guests were staying there.” It seems that Bedarra Island didn’t want to comment because not only is Kim not in Australia, but the pictures from her Instagram account are now allegedly from a trip the pair took to Tahiti.

Pete has had a long history of courting some of the most famous women on the planet, having been linked to actresses Kate Beckinsale and Phoebe Dynevor; fellow comedian Carly Aquilino and model Kaia Gerber, along with his previous engagement to pop singer Ariana Grande.

It hasn’t even been the fame he got after joining the cast of Saturday Night Live in 2014 that’s given him the Midas touch with the ladies. A recently unearthed video of Pete performing stand-up when he was just 17 proved he always understood the art of seduction.

While we’re sure Davidson is happy with his mega-famous missus, we’d say it’s still best to err on the side of caution and at least make plans with your partner so you know she’s occupied.

Some local lads grabbed a photo with the controversial comedian. Image: Instagram

Pete’s upcoming comedy movie Wizards is being produced by Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment production company and is based on a screenplay written by David Michôd, whose other credits include Animal Kingdom and The King.

According to Variety, the movie will follow “the story of two hapless beach-bar operators (played by Davidson and German actor Franz Rogowski) who run into trouble when they stumble across a stolen loot.” The movie received some funding from both the Federal Government’s location incentive scheme and Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy.

Queensland state Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said of the movie production, “Wizards will inject approximately $14.7 million into our state economy and create around 100 jobs for Queensland cast and crew, as well as nearly 300 opportunities for extras – which I’m sure will be great news for local industry practitioners and the community alike.”

The only person who it’s probably not good news for is Kanye West…

World’s Most Profitable Airline Revealed
World’s Most Profitable Airline Revealed

Qatar Airways made a record profit during the financial year that just ended; a profit that’s bigger than any other airline’s profit made during the same time period.

One of the many industries that was hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic was aviation. Strict lockdowns made going anywhere other than your own home and the supermarket impossible, so naturally flights became severely reduced and many people in the aviation sector lost their jobs.

Two years since the start of COVID, the aviation industry is slowly returning to normal – aside from exorbitant ‘business class prices’ for economy tickets and ridiculous social distancing measures, of course.

The biggest indicator that the aviation industry is coming back stronger than a 90s trend is Qatar Airways reporting a record profit of US$1.54 billion for the 2021-2022 financial year. According to One Mile At A Time, this figure is a record for the airline and is actually 200% above Qatar’s highest annual historical profit.

Over the year, from April 1st 2021 through to March 31st 2022, Qatar’s overall revenue increased to US$14.4 billion. This figure is up 78% when compared to Qatar’s overall revenue for the 2020-2021 financial year; the airline actually reported a net loss of US$4.1 billion in that previous financial year.

Move over Virgin and Qantas, there’s a new sheriff in town. Image Credit: Qatar Airways

Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways, credits the airline’s commitment to safety and passengers’ comfort for the huge profit.

“This year Qatar Airways Group celebrates a quarter of a century of history since its relaunch, whilst maintaining strong performance and growing profitability.”

Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways

“Our commitment to providing the greatest choices to our passengers, maintaining the highest levels of safety in the industry and earning trust has made us proudly become the airline of choice for millions of travellers around the world.”

“We have pursued every business opportunity and left no stone unturned as we aimed to meet our targets.”

Akbar Al Baker, CEO of Qatar Airways

Not only did Qatar make a record profit for the 2021-2022 financial year but so far, the US$1.54 billion is the highest profit of any airline worldwide that’s published their past financial year results.

Australians Outraged At Man Who Wants To ‘Americanise’ Tim Tams
Australians Outraged At Man Who Wants To ‘Americanise’ Tim Tams

One man has pitched a new (and rather American) Tim Tam flavour – but not everyone’s a fan…

There are some heathens out there who say Australia doesn’t have a food culture. To them I say, you clearly haven’t had the good fortune to taste delectable fairy bread, mouthwatering sausage sizzles and the divine chocolatey snack that is a Tim Tam.

For anyone unfamiliar, Tim Tam is an Australian biscuit brand owned by Arnott’s. Tim Tams are made with two thin malted biscuits which are joined together by a chocolate cream filling, and then the whole thing is coated in a thin layer of chocolate. In short, they’re delicious.

As with any snack food brand, multiple variations have been released over the years. Currently, there are OG Tim Tams (which, in my opinion, are the best), Tim Tam Dark (made with dark chocolate), Tim Tam White (made with white chocolate), Tim Tam Double Coat (covered in double the chocolate) and Tim Tam Chewy Caramel (these have a gooey caramel filling) available.

But one man dared to dream and pitched on Reddit a new Tim Tam flavour. User Djwagles wrote, “I have an idea… stick with me… Tim Tams with peanut butter on top.”

Peanut Butter Tim Tams did actually exist before they were discontinued due to “low demand”. Image Credit: YeahNah

Of course, Reddit users instantly chimed in and many had the same opinion as me. How dare he suggest we Americanise a classic Aussie snack!

One user commented, “You got some American in you?” while another joked, “This one right here, lock him up for a long time.”

Reddit user TotalSpaceNut reasoned that Tim Tams with peanut butter on top would just “taste pretty similar to an American brand [of] chocolate called Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.”

Of course, as one user pointed out, “peanut butter Tim Tams used to exist.” But according to Arnott’s official Twitter, “the Peanut Butter Tim Tams were discontinued in 2016 due to low demand…”

…Low demand that was most likely the result of putting an American twist on an Australian classic. If you want chocolate and peanut butter together, get yourself some Reese’s; don’t ruin Tim Tams, mate.
