How To Get Lapo Elkann's Style
How To Get Lapo Elkann's Style

Lapo Elkann, the Italian American entrepreneur, has a saying: “If you want to follow a trend, you’ll be late. If you want to create a trend, you’ll become presumptuous. If you free your own style, fashion can become interesting.”

Take heed. The grandson of Fiat plutocrat, Gianni Agnelli, Lapo Elkann runs the design business Italia Independent and is a creative consultant for Ferrari’s Tailor-Made service too; and has already collaborated with luxury big names Vertu and Gucci, who continue to recruit him for his spicy take on the male aesthetic. He is a businessmen, a style icon and this generation’s latest playboy. And today he’s our man to steal style from.

Breaking It Down – Lapo Elkann Style

Lapo Elkann style

Without compromising on what it means to look like a gent, Elkann’s playful approach to colour makes him a reluctant, modern dandy. Suits aren’t safe from sugary hues, and Lapo Elkann style shows that when tailoring it looks better in any colour other than black. Luscious velvet, silk and cashmere replace common cottons and wool for jackets, pants, and ties. The colour and touchy textures make for an overall style that screams sexy. Or as Lapo Elkann explained in a recent interview: “Women don’t want to have an unsexy man. Women want their man to look as sexy and elegant and refined as they do.”

If that’s the case, it pays to note each of Lapo Elkann style moves.

Downright Double-Breasted

Lapo Elkann style

Lapo Elkann is a fan of splitting the suit. The most key look from Italian is the double-breasted blazer. The jacket ranges from linen in summer to mohair wool in the chilly months and is never typical in colour; opting for electric blue for Gucci events and muted mustard while strolling the streets of New York.

Whatever the occasion, the point to note is the gargantuan lapel, in peak cut, accentuating the chic formalities of the blazer and how Lapo Elkann style effortlessly lays the classic jacket over light, neutral trousers. It’s both a smart casual and party attire winning look.

Double Denim

Lapo Elkann style

White denim is innate to Italian style and Elkann likens it to summer’s answer to jeans. Plus, the white colour means the creative man can wear denim up top, too. Again in his favourite double-breasted, wide-lapelled blazer, denim creates a textural, standout night time look; the worn-out wash of the jacket matching the vintage rub of his leather boots.

Day time denim comes in an electric blue hue over military shirt-jacket, featuring utilitarian pockets and shoulder straps. Note the tie, even for a semi-casual look, and its loose styling in a chunky, silk weave. The openness of this outfit – from the button-collared shirt to the jacket to the exposed, coloured socks – show Elkann’s push for comfort when off-duty, despite sticking to all the sartorial must-knows.

Hyper-Coloured Suits

Lapo Elkann style

Bam. Like a splash of acid to the eyes, Lapo Elkann style doesn’t hold back on the saccharine hues as tangerine and electric blue dandify the classic suit. Intent on exploring the realms of sexiness through colour, even ties, shoes and under shirts get the hyper-colour treatment.

Elkann is perfect at taking colour and pushing it hard and fast, matching his eyewear to his hue of choice. All this, before he strips it back to neutral and natural, with the introduction of leather on shoes and a croc skin briefcase balancing out the colour-blast.

Statement Eyewear

Lapo Elkann style

Big on accessories, Elkann is rarely seen, both night and day, without some sort of eyewear framing his face. The glasses are bold and chunky, opting for a classic wayfarer silhouette to accentuate squareness. The material is where these frames standout; in plush velvet to accentuate the lenses away from the arms.

Coloured lenses finish off the statement specs, often matched with a shade or hue aleady featured in Elkann’s outfit. It’s all about creating symmetry and subtle tonality between accessories and garments.

Royal Hues

Lapo Elkann style

Highlighting a fondness for London, the royal hues of navy and red are a casual favourite. The complementary colours are a classic way to rock patterns and prints under a blazer. Keeping the jacket navy, Elkann works plaid in red and blue for a lumberjack take on tartan.

Or for more finer engagements, try thin pyjama stripes in the same hues, this time with a soft blue tie – woven for textural depth. Whatever the combination, a quality pair of slim or straight cut jeans in mild wash are key – never overshadowing the focal macro-prints and white pocket square neatly tuck in.

Key Elkann Fashion Items

Suits
When he does don one, tuxedos are made-to-measure from Gucci. For all his jackets, Elkann frequents Neapolitan tailor Rubinacci, Turinese tailor Alessandro Martorana, as well as Milanese tailor Careceni, who also made the suits that Elkann inherited from his famous grandfather. London tailors Huntsman and Anderson & Sheppard are his UK favourite.

Shirts
A bespoke shirt worn open, with a high collar stand is essential from Turnbull & Asser, while more casual shirting comes in denim from Nudie and in plaid from Thom Browne.

Bottoms
Dolce & Gabbana offer a superb mid-wash denim, while Incotex or J.Crew chinos are a trouser above the rest. For white denim go French with A.P.C.

Shoes
Gucci ankle-strapped boots and he frequents British shoemakers, Gaziano & Girling, especially for slippers and loafers. Ann Demeulemeester offers derby shoes in white to go with Elkann’s denim. Shop black leather moccasins from Oliver Sweeney.

Accessories
His very own Italia Independent sunglasses in velvet-trim frame are Elkann’s go-to. His favourite crocodile leather briefcase can be picked up from Santiago Gonzalez.

10 Most Dangerous Roads In The World
10 Most Dangerous Roads In The World

You know that old saying. Take the road less travelled and you’ll soon reach greatness.

Well for the sake of this story, you’ll either have to see the latter, or meet your maker as you drop off a sheer cliff. This is no Sunday drive through your local wildlife park.

From heart-pounding twists that are near impossible to negotiate, to high altitude trails that disappear into mountains, these are the ten roads that you should probably stay well away from.

# 1 North Yungas Road | Bolivia

They call this little piece of work the “Road of Death” in Bolivia. For reasons other than the fact that you have no idea where you’re going once the fog hits, it’s also a gambling act when trucks and buses try to pass you in the opposite direction. Many cars have fallen more than 600m into the valley below, and it doesn’t look like slowing down anytime soon – the road stretches 61km with no guard rails. Genius.

#2 Atlantic Ocean Road | Norway

There’s nothing dangerous about Norway, right? Wrong. This one particular marvel of human engineering is also a test of the human will to defy all common sense. Built across several islands, the road has eight bridges with one being the famous Storseisundet Bridge. As you can tell, the reason it rises so high is because of the strong ocean currents which can wipe out a standard car on a bad day.

#3 Road To Fairy Meadow | Pakistan

Don’t let the cute name fool you. Road to Fairy Meadow is as treacherous as it gets. The first thing you’ll notice the lack of asphalt and guard rails. That’s because the “road” was build by locals with little support from the national government. And that also means all structural integrity and engineering design goes out the window. Running at 10km long, it leads to one of the highest peaks in the world, the Nanga Parbat. If you make it past all the falling rocks and tight lanes, you’ll be treated with a great view and spare underpants.

#4 Guoliang Tunnel | China

This isn’t your average everyday motorway tunnel. The Guoliang Tunnel is a masterpiece of transport, dug into the side of a cliff face. The scenic views are breathtaking but the moment you disrespect the mountain is the moment it claims you with its solid stone walls and sheer drops.

#5 James Dalton Highway | Alaska

If you’ve seen the commercials for a show called Ice Road Truckers, then this is their set. The highway is a different kind of dangerous in that it’s remote, features rocks flying in all directions from passing trucks and an endless road of icy potholes to test your driving skill. It is recommended that novices should not attempt this drive without adequate supplies and spare petrol.

#6 Pass Of The Dades Gorges | Morocco

Pass of the Dades traverses deep into a gorge that overhangs the river Dades on the Atlas Mountains. You can definitely call this one the “fun” one of the bunch, but lose a split second of concentration or misjudge your car’s ability at speed and you’re off into the river below.

#7 Pasubio | Italy

The Italians are renowned for their boldness but we wouldn’t blame them for shutting this one down to over enthusiastic motorists. Famous for its incredible views, the Pasubio in northern Italy is a serious challenge for drivers with a section of the road deemed so dangerous that no cars are allowed past after that point. Though this hasn’t stopped people from getting on their bikes to tackle the mountain’s edge.

#8 Sichuan-Tibet Highway | China

If the 2,500 km of curves don’t scare you, then maybe a bridge that crosses the Nujiang River with winds that hit 40km/h will. And yes, it also overlooks a sheer cliff drop for your peace of mind.

#9 Taroko Gorge | Taiwan

Taroko means “magnificent and splendid” in Taiwanese and the road is definitely that. Lest we forget the scenic trail also has an evil twin when earthquakes or typhoons hit, making it impossible to drive across without falling debris or being blown away.

#10 Himalayan Roads | The Himalayas

Once you’ve fended off the yetis, you have the roads to compete with. This is nature’s backyard at its most uncompromising. From the near-freezing cold to a very dangerous network of unpaved, slippery and narrow roads, you can see the casualties in real time with flipped cars and buses strewn across the bottom sides of cliffs.

10 Weird & Wonderful Cars Of China
10 Weird & Wonderful Cars Of China

It’s expected that the world’s largest population would one day become a rising global force in the motoring industry. But until that day, we get to bask in some of the most oddball vehicles to ever roll off the nation’s production line. From the infamous counterfeits to the flashy rides for the nouveau riche, welcome to the weird Chinese cars of the motoring world.

#1 Eagle Came

eagle-carrie-104

We’re kicking it off with something fresh from the 2015 Shanghai Motor Show. Call it premature, but when a manufacturer decides to call a car ‘Eagle Came’, you know you’re in a world of trouble. Even more so than the fact that the car is a complete replica of a Ferrari FF front merged with a Porsche Cayman rear complete with Carrera-style rear insignia and Porsche-like badging. No specs are available for this car yet, but judging by the wheel and brake size, you can expect no more than a punchy 1.5-litre 4-cylinder driving the front wheels with side intakes to keep your rear luggage cool.

#2 Land Wind X7

Land-Wind-X7-1

One car that cannot be overlooked is the boldly named Land Wind. Bold because they spelt ‘Rover’ wrong and just went with it. The lines of the X7 share an uncanny resemblance to the Land Rover Evoque with the only difference being in price (a third of a Land Rover) and the engine – a monstrous 188hp 2.0-litre 4 cylinder engine. We’re afraid to ask what the car weighs.

#3 CH Auto Lithia Sports

ch-auto-lithia-sports-car-2

A Chinese take on German exotica is this questionable looking concept by CH Auto. Taking the iconic Audi R8 lines straight from Google images and draping it over an electric car appears to be the strategy behind the Lithia Sports. The specsheet says it’s powered by a lithium-ion battery giving it a not-so-grand range of 150km. We do however give it points for being green in a country where you can’t see ten metres in front of you in heavy smog.

#4 Cestar Sunset

weird chinese cars

This happy little three-wheeler has a great backstory to it. Shandong Cestar Electric Vehicle Co. wanted their customers to be happy, so they made all their cars look happy. The end. It’s also electric powered so you can smile all the way to bank from all those fuel savings. Even getting hit by one of these looks like a joy.

#5 Dongfeng EQ2050 Brave Soldier

dongfeng-eq2050-001

They’ve dubbed this one the Chinese Hummer for obvious reasons. Debuting in 2004, the EQ2050 was intended for the Chinese Army but those with enough money and connections could obtain one for public roads. The price for one is about US$143,000, which is still cheaper than the U.S version. The vehicle is powered by an American-designed Cummins V8 diesel, surprisingly made in China through the Dongfeng-Cummins joint venture.

#6 Zap Alias Roadster

zap-alias-electric-car-jonway-samyang

Something that is definitely cool and original on the list is the Zap Alias – an electric three-wheeled roadster which seats two and features supercar style gull-wing doors. Top speed is 170km/h with a 0-100km/h sprint time of 7.8 seconds. Not a bad performance at all for a single charge. We wouldn’t take corners too quickly even though it looks like a handful of fun.

#7 Geely GE

weird chinese cars

The Geely GE raised eyebrows when it popped up looking a bit (lot) like a Rolls Royce Phantom. So much so that the British luxury marquee threatened them with a lawsuit which saw the GE having to be redesigned. For a fraction of the Rolls Royce price at US$45,000, you get an air purifier, cigar storage, fridge and starlight interior roof lining – just like in a real Royce. GE doesn’t stand for General Electric by the way; it stands for Geely Excellence.

#8 Great Wall Hover Pi

Great_Wall_Hover_Pi_1x1280x1024

The name’s Pi. As in, mathematical constant π = 3.14. Great Wall motors have been on our shores for a while now, but the local market hasn’t been fortunate enough to see one of these crazy vehicles rolling around yet. The oddly named Pi is a stretch limo SUV which features a slew of tacky interior plastics with the interior design of a roadhouse motel from the 80s. We might laugh at it here, but in China the Pi is a strong representation of wealth, status and power.

#9 Li Shi Guang Ming The Book Of Songs

Tang-Hua-Detroit-Fish-Piece-of-Cloud-and-Book-of-Songs-2008-08AFC294401612C

We can guarantee you won’t be rounding up any birds in this thing any time soon. When she asks what you drive and you reply with “The Book of Songs”, that should be enough to kill any last remaining ounce of sex appeal you had. Mind you, it does what it’s supposed to in a crowded city, getting occupants from A to B all for under $8,000 and with a top speed of 45km/h. A true gem of the weird Chinese cars.

#10 Tang Hua Detroit Fish

weird chinese cars

There really are no words to describe this outrageous amphibious vehicle which triples as a car, boat and a rolling wiener with wings/fins. Developed by Tang Hua for the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, the Detroit Fish has a propeller where the exhaust usually is. We’re also not sure how well the thing will fair on Yangtze River without doors. We’re not even sure if it floats. It does drive though so one out of two isn’t bad.

How To Get Scott Disick's Style
How To Get Scott Disick's Style

“People who say, ‘real men don’t wear pink,’ obviously don’t know any real men.”

And so goes the fashion mantra of Scott Disick. So, who is this Disick, who just tells it like it is? Ask your lady friend. Caught up in the reality TV series – Keeping Up With The Kardashians, Disick is the partner of the socialite-sister clan’s oldest member, Kourtney. Or, so the story goes.

Having never tuned in, we’ve heard there are plenty of ‘entertaining’ moments between Disick and his Kardashian belle. We’ve also heard that Scott Disick style reputation is that of an expensive taste in clothes. Now, that’s worth tuning in for.

Scott Disick Style – Breaking It Down

Scott Disick Style

Disick isn’t much for understated colour (as made evident with his references to the importance of pink). From blazers to sports coats, shorts to suede loafers the colours of the rainbow shine on Disick’s wardrobe, but rarely all at once. See, the trick to being a man of colour is a) doing it brilliantly without an air of care and b) wearing just as much muted colour – from war time grey to cream to chocolate brown. Like all healthy things, balance is key, which is why this chino master is also not afraid to don a fluro pair of shorts.

Light & Ripped

Scott Disick Style

A perfectly sunny LA summer requires nothing but light layers and ripped denim. And Disick does it without looking like a wanna-be actor or hipster. His severely washed denim hosts blink-and-you’ll-miss-it rips in appropriately-faded places, creating a pair of jeans that look that he has cherished them for years, not just a few weeks. In slim fit in perfect length, finish the look with a taupe sweater or pure white long sleeve shirt and let the lightness go on until sunset.

Perfectly Prep

Scott Disick Style

Smart casual never looked so prep (and likeable) than it does on the back of Disick. A walking Ralph Lauren model, Disick channels the classic American look; tapping just the right amount of lemon sorbet cashmere to loop effortlessly in a loose knot at the front. Rounding out the off-duty collegiate look, a striped blue shirt and navy chinos perch over simply black loafers.

For a more casual business look, a lime striped sports coat and tonal green tie colour block boldly on matte yet electric blue linen pants. And like Disick and his fascination with pink, don’t forget a rose pocket square.

Dressed For Success

Scott Disick Style

An entrepreneur in his own right, Disick is rumored to be worth $12m. But with no job or product line, no one really knows what Disick gets up to – Monday to Friday, nine to five. Something big, it seems – judging by his dressed-for-success attire. At times, Disick is neutrally grey in a classic single-breasted suit turned rather corporate with a shawl lapel, then casual again, sans tie.

Other times, Disick opts for the technically casual suit in window-pane, which is making a resurgence in the office this season. The subtle spot neck scarf and black tassel loafers (with socks) make for an Italian touch. Having Disick’s Euro-slick hair does help the overall affect, too.

Get Shorty

Scott Disick Style

Living an endless summer it seems, Disick’s stylish domination of the common man short (worn not so well by many now and in the past), highlights the LA gent’s innate understanding of the casual bottom. When he goes short (by that we mean mid-thigh, never shorter) the silhouette is roomy and airy, again dyed in boisterous pink.

Longer shorts are slimmer, sitting just above the knee, and are more structured like chino shorts but in varying cloth weights; linen for super lightness and cotton-polyester for more heftiness. Again, pair the short with a collarless-anything.

Key Scott Disick Style Items

Suit

Lutwyche suits offer subtle window-pane checks on complete suits, as well as Gieves & Hawkes and Thom Sweeney. For a classic grey number, go for Canali and super-luxe Dolce & Gabbana.

Shirt

Off-duty, Disick rocks linen silk blend button-down shirts by Haider Ackermann, and white long sleeve crew necks from James Perse and Alex Mill. Striped business shirts are Hackett London inspired and of course, Polo Ralph Lauren.

Denim

Disick’s light wash denim can be picked up at Michael Bastian, while rips are best placed with The People Vs., in super vintage wash. Other times, catch Disick in black 501 Levi’s.

Jacket

Leather jacket for casual LA gigs from Balmain. Sports coats are all Ralph Lauren or equally Hampton’s Americana with Tommy Hilfiger or Gant.

Accesories

In rose gold, the perfect Disick watch is made by Bremont or Junghans chronoscope is a tan masterpiece. Silk neck scarf with tassels is none other than Etro.

Shoes

For Disick’s smoker loafers in rich black suede and tassel trim look to Santoni, or more down played loafers are available from Berluti and Tod’s – all Italiano, of course.

10 Canadian Roads You Have To Drive
10 Canadian Roads You Have To Drive

The conveniences of city life have their perks, but a daily commute through molasses-slow traffic is not one of them. A relaxing drive through sublime scenery, on the other hand, is positively therapeutic. Canada’s vast and varied landscape provides ample opportunity for restorative automotive activities.

Heart-pounding twists, oceans, mountains, a Viking village, and even dinosaur fossils await on these 10 must-do Canadian drives.

Icefields Parkway | Alberta

4Icefields Parkway takes the term “scenic drive” to new heights. It runs along the Continental Divide, traversing the rugged landscape of the Canadian Rockies, cutting through Banff National Park and Jasper National Park, and passing the Columbia Icefield. The double-lane highway receives up to 100,000 vehicle visitors a month in July and August. The road itself is not particularly dangerous, but watch for wildlife and unpredictable weather.

The Badlands | Alberta

5Dinosaurs meet the Wild West – no, that’s not the plot for a low-budget sci-fi flick, that’s a description of the Canadian Badlands, one of the most unique destinations in the country. The Badlands are home to Dinosaur Provincial Park, ghost towns, and rustic ranches, making for an unusually, unsettlingly beautiful drive. Take the road from Calgary to Drumheller. The two-hour trip drops you in Drumheller Valley, a fossil-mecca where you could find a very special souvenir.

Sea-To-Sky Highway | British Columbia

6Outdoor adventure meets awe-inspiring beauty meets the ever-present threat of death on this route. The Sea-To-Sky Highway is a treacherous trip, built into a steep cliff and hanging precariously over the gaping maw of Howe Sound. There’s no barrier to keep reckless drivers on the road, earning it the nickname the “Drive-to-Die Highway.” You’ll need balls of steel to enjoy these ocean views, massive mountains and coastal rain forests.

Kicking Horse Trail | British Columbia

1Hear “trail” and your first thoughts are of hiking, horseback riding or some equally low-tech, rural pursuit. In the case of Kicking Horse, however, the trail is asphalt and the horse is really horsepower. The scenic passage through British Columbia gains a staggering 475 m in just 10.5 km, offering spectacular Canadian Rockies views. At the end of the drive, treat yourself to a relaxing stopover at the Kicking Horse Mountain Resort’s spa.

Viking Trail | Newfoundland

2When you name something “Viking,” you set certain expectations. While you won’t see any horned helmets, and pillaging the local villages is strongly discouraged, a drive down the Viking Trail does feel like an epic adventure. Its 400 km are draped over barren and rocky coastal land, taking you about as far north as you can go before tumbling into the icy North Atlantic. Highlights along the way include Gros Morne National Park and L’Anse aux Meadows, the only authenticated Viking site in North America.

Frank MacDougall Parkway | Ontario

3The 255.8 km King’s Highway 60 serves as the primary corridor through Algonquin Provincial Park, where it’s known as the Frank McDougall Parkway. Take the drive in the fall, when the park’s famously colourful foliage is in full bloom, and beware of moose. This is a great area for spotting them, but also a great area for hitting them. Come on a Thursday night in August or September and you may see as many as 600 cars gathered along the highway to hear wolves howl.

Cabot Trail | Nova Scotia

7Visiting Cape Breton Island? Set aside a day (or two, or three, or…) to explore the legendary Cabot Trail. Its loop around the island travels over steep grades and curves, past picturesque ocean vistas, alongside scenic overlooks and cultural heritage sites. Once you begin the drive, you’re in it for the long haul. It ends only by completing the loop or by turning around and retracing your path. You cannot cut across the center of Cape Breton Island.

Pacific Rim Highway | Vancouver Island

8Once upon a time, this moss-laden landscape and unbroken stretch of ocean were visited only by serious adventurers. Today that formerly toruous road is the black-topped Pacific Rim Highway, and one million travellers pay a visit to its 160 km of pure driving bliss each year. Natural wonders abound, plus recreational opportunities like golfing and whale watching. Steep grades and damp roads can make this a difficult journey, so come prepared.

Crowsnest Highway | British Columbia & Alberta

9The Crowsnest Highway unfurls across 1,161 km through the southern parts of British Columbia and Alberta. Much of it traces the route of a mid-19th century gold-rush trail, and though you’re unlikely to spot any precious metals today, it’s certainly a golden opportunity to test your mettle as a driver. The Crow is a two-lane twister through shifting terrain that takes the automotive experience to the next level.

Forks Of The Credit | Ontario

10Forks Of The Credit is a historical and beautiful road in the Greater Toronto Area. Be prepared for crowded weekends – it’s a popular destination for local enthusiasts and the police out to ruin their days. Provided you have no run-ins with the law, you have a charming, tree-lined blast along the Credit River and one hell of a hairpin turn to look forward to. Take Mississauga Road north for an extra thrill.

How To Get Colin Firth's Style
How To Get Colin Firth's Style

“Manners make the man,” says Colin Firth, whilst school-ing a bunch of ruffigans as a British Secret Service spy in his hit movie, Kingsmen. Playing a quintessentially British gent seems second nature to Firth. But lapel widths, cuff lengths and colour coordinating suits is something specifically learned by the actor, since his unconfident pursuit of Bridget Jones.

Now, with a suit collection on Mr. Porter inspired by his dapper onscreen wardrobe, Firth has indeed earned his sartorial pin stripes. And like fine wine, his appearance is ripening with age.

Breaking It Down

Firth

Despite Colin Firth’s niceties, they are few things that cross the threshold of his wardrobe. Firstly, colour. A fan of all things neutral, Firth finds all ways and hows to dress simply, muted and classic. Next, he doesn’t own shorts or tees (as far as we can see). Accustomed to the English cold, maybe he thinks he’ll freeze to death if he dare try a summer themed outfit for just one second. And lastly, he doesn’t accessorise.

Outside of sunglasses and ties, the actor prefers to channel good hair and a killer smile to dress-up his British garb. And if you still have hair and good teeth at Firth’s age, we say – work it.

Can’t Beat It Black And White

Blackandwhite

Engrossed in tailoring, Firth is rarely without some sort of blazer or jacket torn away from his classic suit. The standout, however, is his fascination with black. Never looking goth, the black jacket is single-breasted with two buttons usually, and a mid-sized, peak lapel. Pairing a blazer with classic white shirt might sound boring but with raw jeans its sharp and stress-free. With suits, see him in a black three-piece.

The stylish point of difference (as always with Firth) is his tie – this time in silk weave for textural resonance when it matters most – on the red carpet.

Neutral & Tonal

TonalNeutral

When suited and booted, Firth opts for a seamless blend of colour between his jacket and button-shirt. Termed ‘tonal’, the effect is simply brilliant when adopted in the likes of Firth’s midnight blue mohair suiting – single breasted and with a touch of sheen, enhanced with the flash of camera bulb on the red carpet.

Casually Black

CasuallyBlack

And Firth is back to black off-duty with two distinct street-style looks. For winter, its a touch après ski, with puffer down jacket over a professor sweater and chino combination, while on holiday in New York. In LA, the sun’s shine sees black turn into a collared Henley over black jeans – with a touch of fade to make it a lighter for well, summer. Final thing? Eyewear – both spectacles and shades, in b-lack.

Dandy Details

DandyDetails

Leaving the playful part of his style canon to accessories, Firth relishes in pin-point spots. Find the little specks placed effortlessly on business ties and cravats for the red carpet. A bit of a bower bird too, Firth is drawn to shiny things and confidently boasts the traditional tie in matte silver under a super luxury three-piece suit. Bling!

Striped Shirting

Stripes

The pyjama striped shirt making it big in 2015 was already being worn by Firth several years ago. Because Firth likes black, especially in suits and blazers, the stripe allows the actor to wear even more black. Lighter stripes, say white, break up the dark attack or inverse the hues for a night-time stripe look – white stripes on black. Meanwhile, remove the coat and the stripes (always thin) work softly on a white button-down and jazz up a pair of standard blue chinos.

Key Firth Fashion Items

Suit

It goes without saying that Firth would own some of the Kingsmen movie suits, make in conjunction with some of Savile Row’s best tailors. Go single breast for day time ease, while the double breast is key for nights. Otherwise, Tom Ford is a go-to for Firth as he is a close friend, as well as Dolce & Gabbana.

Shirt

Quintessentially British, Firth only knows the likes of tailor-made shirting from English greats Hackett London and Gieves & Hawkes. Always in a button shirt, his casual stripes are very Alexander McQueen. And the rare times he dons a casual top usually results in a henley or polo – long sleeved, too. The soft cotton, as opposed to poplin, is important to Firth so source the most luxurious brands around for modern tees – James Perse and Simon Miller.

Jacket

A fan of overcoats, opt for a heavy weft and dark hue in a mac or pea coat style. Once again, fabric is everything and the most quality is cashmere and wool. Gucci is first class for this. Moncler or Canada Goose are the best ski-look down jacket makers, as are Uniqlo for a cheaper option.

Accessories

Ties and sunnies and fashion spectacles: these are to only accessories that Firth hones in on. For neckwear, mix it up with a woven number for London’s Drakes or Dunhill. For spots on silk, turn to Saint Laurent – one of the better brands doing the dandy print this season. For frames, go Thom Browne in chunky, fashion-designer black; while sunnies are more retro and often aviator, towards the essence of Persol or Eyevan.

10 Weird & Wonderful Cars Of The United States
10 Weird & Wonderful Cars Of The United States

The Land of the Free has long provided us with endless iconic monuments of mass consumption. From mass-produced coffee to iPhones to pictures of Kim Kardashian’s arse, there’s no denying that the Yanks simply like to do things differently in pursuit of innovation. Their motoring heritage of weird American cars is no different.

Today we’re taking the back seat to explore some of the coolest and strangest automobiles to ever roll out of Uncle Sam’s garage. Buckle up y’all.

#1 1948 Davis Divian

1948-Davis

Little known car maker Davis no longer makes cars today, but during its time in operation between 1947-1949, it managed to muster out a grand total of seventeen cars. Their production car, the Divian, has three wheels, 63hp and looks like a rolling groin protector. Still, you can’t deny the two-seater convertible’s cool factor.

The Divian was the brainchild of used-car salesman Glen Gordon Davis and was based on a custom three-wheeled roadster built by race car designer Frank Kurtis for a Southern Californian millionaire.

#2 Herb Adams Vivant

HA-(82)

When an American Pontiac engineer decides to build a car in 1965 with the help of three British panel beaters in need of a job, the Viviant is the sleek result. Adams was fresh out of college at the time and was inspired by Alfa Romeo’s B.A.T. concept cars from the years gone by. It’s also important to note that the Vivant actually received no official assistance from Pontiac as it was Adams’ own side project.

This meant the car’s chassis was built entirely of spare Pontiac parts sourced from a junkyard before being assembled in Adams’ garage. A Pontiac V8 motor that Adams bought on the cheap from his employer powers this sleek rider. The bad news: There is only one in the world as Adams sold it off to settle a debt.

#3 1974 Fascination 2DR

74_Fascination_2Dr_DV_07_CC_07

Talk about the epitome of weird American cars. There are officially five 2DRs rolling on roads in the world somewhere, so we’re considering it a production vehicle. The ridiculous looking three-wheeled car inspired by the jet age isn’t just oddball in its aesthetics though. The car also sports unconventional features such as an electric motor power unit which the inventor claimed would introduce a “new manifestation of electricity”.

The tech specs on this car was a bit sketchy at the time, but today we know it’s actually powered by a Corvair 4-cyclinder motor. Groovy baby.

#4 1965 Dodge Deora

weird american cars

The Dodge Deora is a truly amazing concept car – namely because you couldn’t tell which end was the front. Notice the lack of doors? Passengers entered the vehicle by lifting a front hatch with the elongated nose acting as the car’s rear end. The truck was designed and built by Mike and Larry Alexander and authentically reflects the space-race era with its lunar transporter styling.

#5 Chaparral 2J

crazy american cars

One of the most controversial race cars to come out of the Unites States that paved the way for banned F1 ground-effects technology is the 2J by Chaparral. It’s knick-named ‘The Vacum Cleaner’ for a good reason as the two 17-inch JLO fans built into the car would create a vacum under the chassis to ingeniously suck the car to the road whilst it was moving at speed – essentially reversing the effects of physics. This drastically improved the car’s downforce and handling, allowing the car to lap two seconds quicker than the rest of the field during qualifying. Mechanical issues ensured the car never saw the podium though.

#6 1998 Cadillac Pope Mobile

8472225154_163ce92585_b

Built by the American company to protect the Pope during his 1998 visit to Mexico, this one of a kind Brougham is decked out with enough gear to make a King weep. No seriously, it has a fold-down passenger door that allows the Pope to step up to his throne and hydraulics that lift and raise the car for an elegant entry. It was not to be though as the Pope’s security team deemed it to be unsafe at the time. Still, it managed to get blessed by the Pope before it was officially retired.

#7 Cadillac Cyclone

crazy american cars

Taking Homer’s car design literally is Cadillac’s bubble car that looks like a watered-down version of the 1960s Batmobile. The car was built in 1959 and although it never saw mass production, it stood as a testbed for the maker’s futuristic designs and technology. Besides the obligatory V8 engine, the car also featured a radar operated crash avoidance system, with the radar sensors situated in twin nose-cones on the front of the car. Sorry, no missiles here. Just another one of those weird American cars.

#8 Badsey Bullet

weird american cars

One of the very few three-wheeled cars to make it to production is the Bullet by Californian designer Bill Badsey. If it looks rather Back to the Future, it’s because it was created during the 1980s – a time when standing out for all the wrong reasons was a good thing. The production model was powered by a Yamaha motorcycle engine that gave it a 0-100km/h time of under 5 seconds – rather daunting considering you’re on three wheels with no roof. Records show that only 8 vehicles have been sold in the USA and South Africa.

 #9 Aurora Safety Car

weird american cars

Deemed the ugliest car ever by most motoring historians, the Aurora Safety Car was a project by Catholic priest, Alfred A. Juliano. The car is built with a plywood substructure with a curvy fibre glass body, which Juliano claimed was resistant to dents, rust and corrosion.

Front impacts were also a non-issue as it had a gaping nose filled with foam – a feature that intended to safely scoop up pedestrians and cradle them to safety instead of onto the concrete sidewalk. The spare tyre also acted as a “crush space” under the nose. 5 Star ANCAP safety? You got it.

#10 1958 GM Firebird III

weird american cars

The Firebird III was GM’s first foray into space-aged car design. It’s special because it genuinely and literally takes aspects of flight design and applies it to the road. Harley Earl was the designer of the vehicle who conceived this gas-turbine automobile which includes twin bubble canopies, butterfly doors and a total of nine fins. Steering wheel is also flight-inspired with the replacement of Unicontrol joystick. Yes, like in Topgun. We do feel the need…for weird American cars.

How To Get Justin Theroux's Style
How To Get Justin Theroux's Style

Justin Theroux style carries a no-nonsense, bad guy look that is presented both on screen and in the way he wears his clothes. From playing the devilish Seamus in Charlie’s Angels to the Evil DJ in Zoolander, Theroux’s film hand is set on taking down the world – one male model and karate-chopping-Drew-Barrymore at a time.

Now a celebrated screenwriter (Tropic Thunder) and star of series The Leftovers, Theroux has matured into an on-and-offscreen genius. But his wardrobe remains intent on staying, well – just that little bit dark.

Breaking It Down: Justin Theroux Style

Justin Theroux Style

Black, black, black; this is the mantra that chants through the mind of Theroux as he stands before his wardrobe each and every morning. But, it’s the working of the sombre colour in different shades and hues, that makes Theroux’s dark uniform more like a living thing – evolving on the body in layers. Rarely seen without a leather jacket, polo shirt and aviators, it’s the staple pieces that Theroux likes to invest in, teaching trend-chasers a thing two about the art of classic casual wear and making it last.

Triple-Smoked Black

Justin Theroux Style

First things: get a black leather biker jacket. Pronto. In Justin Theroux style, black tees or roll neck shirt-sweaters are then layered under the biker in leather or satiny nylon (depending on the heat, of course). Theroux’s all-dark denim finishes his hard-nut-to-crack, minimal look. While we love classic wash and raw denim, black is the next best thing – especially with a subtle wax coating to oil-things up.

Cap-tain Aviator

Justin Theroux Style

A cap – snap back or trucker – and aviator sunnies are Theroux’s go-to combination in summer. Paired with graphic-tee-turned-tank or posh Lacoste tee, both accessories epitomise a rockstar street-look, with back pack in toe. Just keep the logos and branding simple, and of course, black is best if you want to truly channel Theroux.

Biker Chic

Justin Theroux Style

An asymmetrically zipped biker jacket rides smoothly with Theroux. As his hero piece for off-duty days, it’s the essence of his no-nonsense approach to style. Jen in arm, his basic dark jeans and grey shirt, melt seamlessly under heavy duty boots and aviators. It’s a look that’s comfortable and eliminates unnecessary baggage so he can ride high and fast.

Polo Theroux

Justin Theroux Style

Whether browsing store windows in New York or touching down in LAX airport, the bicoastal Theroux would be lost without his polo shirt. Yes – Theroux isn’t a sports guy. But, he does take sporty things and heat them up. The polo gets the rockstar makeover with the actor (worn button to the neck and untucked at the waist in hues such as neon red or black with white trim), the former popping like a firework against black jeans and coat.

Street-Smart Tailoring

Justin Theroux Style

Snubbing the traditional bow tie, Justin Theroux attended The Leftovers premiere at NYU Skirball Center in New York rocking a navy wool narrow lapel two-button suit, over a white cotton shirt with silver collar bar. Other times, catch the rule-bender in a two-piece grey sheen-suit (above) wearing black, heavy duty boots with his slim-cut suit. Inclined to mix things up, Justin Theroux style is the ultimate street-smart look, opting for a black structured blazer over dark denim and his signature polo shirt.

Key Justin Theroux Style Items

Jacket

Theroux looks to favour the Allsaints Peyto biker jacket or roar down the super-luxe highway with leather number from Parisian, Rick Owens. Belstaff is a classic choice.

Suits

Ovadia & Sons have Theroux’s street-ready approach to suiting covered, from unstructured two-piece’s to separate blazers in lush wool. Red carpets mean designer brands, and Theroux prefers the modernised traditionalism that is Dior Homme or Tom Ford.

Shirt

Polos, all the way. Opt for Fred Perry, Lacoste or Penguin Original to do the deed right. Ralph Lauren is the ultimate for picking and choosing an array of colour options. Roll neck shirts Theroux’s convenient winter layer, so go for John Smedley Belvoir Merino wool for breathability and comfort. Plain white tees? Calvin Klein for snug, Uniqlo for tech fabric and Bassike for organic softness and longline.

Shoes

For boots with a suit go for Alexander McQueen derbies; still classic in essence the black cap-toes offer a uniformed feel with a grip-heel. Dr Martens are a second, casual boot choice. Theroux rarely wears sneakers, opting for the comfort of rubber-soled creepers from Dior or Chukka boots in leather by Clarks for an ever-sturdy casual stride.

Denim

Jeans are always dark so try head for Nudie in wax-coat slim fit or skinnies. Gap’s slim fit are a great affordable choice –  made from cotton stretch fabric, while Givenchy offers superior luxury.

Accessories

Tom Ford or Ray Ban aviators, and leather back packs are staples. For bag, Phillip Lim is your luxury go-to and Henschel offer a wider, more affordable range without compromising on the quality of the skin. Supreme New York are absolutely Theroux for caps.

How To Get Jamie Campbell Bower's Style
How To Get Jamie Campbell Bower's Style

The ultimate triple-threat, Jamie Campbell Bower models, sings and acts, and knows how to rock the meanest street looks on his local London streets. Starting things out in Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd, he then cast spells in Harry Potter before getting vampy in Twilight and even more fantastical in the book-turned-film epic, The Mortal Instruments.

Attracting interest from both the movie and fashion elite, Bower then faced Burberry’s SS14 campaign and launched himself as band-lead for music group, The Darling Buds. In 2015, he is a prominent member of today’s British brat-pack (think Oliver Cheshire, Cara Delevigne and Douglas Booth), claiming his reign on an outlandish yet simple style. All hail, Jamie Campbell Bower.

Breaking It Down: Jamie Campbell Bower Best Looks

Jamie Campbell Bower

Where do I begin? Bower’s style is eclectic and thrown-together – just like the hunter-gatherer bird that bears the same name.  A fan of the classic camel coat, his rebel side shines through with his modernising of classic things: burgundy patent shoes, skull print scarves, metallic chains as neckwear, and coats just that half-size too big.

With a penchant for black and leather, Bower also has a sartorial side: basking in the opportunity to wear a coloured suits and slick back his long-ish hair. Somewhat refined, the star never wears a tie, but always dotes on leather shoes. Bending the rules to meet his needs, here are Bower’s key style looks.

Biker Black

Jamie Campbell Bower

Whether he’s strolling the streets of East London with Burberry-model-girlfriend Mathilda Lowther, or attending an insider fashion event in Dalston, monochrome creates Bower’s signature look – biker black. The expense is in the leather jacket; cut severely sharp for nights with slim-fit tee or a slightly more relaxed, softer shape during the day with longline, scoop neck shirt.

Both leathers are not without eye-catching hardware in metal and power shoulders that a hold superior line and shape. Denim is skinny and personalised with slits in the knee; distressing kept minimal but essential in breaking up the all-over black.

Varsity Blues

Jamie Campbell Bower

Having never attended an American university, Bower makes up for lost time now. Maintaining his rock-star edge, Bower perverts the cleanliness of Varsity prep, pairing the jacket over clashing prints including punk-Tartan. Never phased, Bower likes controversy, and facilitates just the one rhetorical question to onlookers: “What are you looking at?”

In confidence, pattern mismatch works, but only if you follow Bower’s lead in eliminating all other subversions. Stick to shades of black, grey and white to balance the clash. Need help looking poised and in control? A backwards cap and killer shades (aviator or wayfarer are best) create instant celebrity confidence.

Tonal Suiting

Jamie Campbell Bower

Not only is Bower a huge fan of coloured tailoring, he more-often-than-not goes all-out in wearing a matching shirt and pocket square to boot. Notice the details, however. While his red carpet efforts appear monotone, the oneness of the hue is accented with micro-prints on the collar of button downs and the fabric of the shirt itself, creating a buffer against looking like a blood clot when dressed in all-red.

Not sure about a one-colour look? Follow the actors electric blue concoction: no tie (silver chain for the jewelry-brave) but colour-matching the waist coast with suit separates. The brightness of the outfit pops on a stark white shirt. Note: going tonal requires dulled-down colour. If electric and bright, change the coloured shirt for a white one).

Outlandish & Oversized Outerwear

Jamie Campbell Bower

When you’re practically sponsored by Burberry, you can’t help but sport the luxury coat in interesting ways. Bower isn’t a huge fan of button shirts (outside of suits) and chooses tees and sweaters to layer under winter coats.

And he doesn’t fall in line with traditional slim-fits; opting for slightly oversized camel mac coats and fluid-hanging trenches in emerald green.

He is a master of scarves and protects against the elements with silk, printed neckwear, usually kept untied. Outerwear is out-of-the-box and effortless with Bower, appearing tussled and thrown on, much like his rugged hair.

Retro Headwear

Jamie Campbell Bower

Felt, wool and denim hats in retro shapes are key for Jamie Campbell Bower. From relaxed farmers and snap backs, to fedoras and panamas, to pork pie and flat caps – the hat adds a crowning touch to the Bower ensemble. They change depending on his mood, occasion and the condition of his blunt-chopped locks. But the quality of the fabric is unwavering, providing a old-time luxury to his off-duty, artsy style.

Key Bower Fashion Items

Outerwear

Burberry mac coats in camel are key, as well as the legendary British label’s trench, but in emerald green. Scandinavian simplicity in the form of parkas from Acne Studios are in line with Bower’s minimalist approach to coats.

Jackets

For leather crop biker jackets, go Allsaints or Topman Design, who both offer younger, fresher vibes. For super luxe, the French maisons call: Saint Laurent, Givenchy and Balenciaga. For Varsity prep, the only way is Ralph Lauren or Tommy Hilfiger for US classics.

Denim

For subtle rips and slits, go roughed-up J Brand, Yohji Yamamoto or Australian newcomer, The People Vs. For luxury, hit Philip Plein, Burberry or skinny jeans maître, Saint Laurent.

Shirts

Bower rocks slim and short cut tees reminiscent of James Dean. Go for signature classics like Calvin Klein Jeans and Club Monaco. For Bower’s rebellion against tee-niceties, go for longline, sporty fits from COS and APC or scoop neck from Allsaints in organic cotton. A fan of printed shirting, Paul Smith and Etro are super options for button downs – patterned, yes – but not over the top.

Shoes

A rocker for days, Jamie Campbell Bower would be lost without his Dr Martens. For a more subtle version of the punk-ish shoe, Henson offers a stellar-cut leather boot, next to derby brilliance from Alexander McQueen and once again, Allsaints.

Accessories

Printed silk scarves fall well in the way of Alexander McQueen. Sunglasses – go to Gucci for aviators or Ray Ban for the classic wayfarer. Jewelry looks like Diesel for silver chains and Vivienne Westwood for standout silver rings. For hats, Burberry’s rabbit-felt hat is versatile and stately, as well as the Loro Piana panama in summery straw.
